Rainfall fallout Alternating single lane traffic was permitted at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 24 after a slide had closed Broadwater Road about four kilometres north west of the Hugh Keenleyside Dam west of Castlegar. Workers on site said crews had initially been called out to deal with the slide about 24 hours earlier. The incident was but one of many across the West Kootenay in the past week as the region has been hammered by a combination of high run-off, high river levels compounded by heavy rain. The conditions turned tragic on the weekend as the life of Crescent Valley resident Edward Posnikoff was lost in the rushing waters of Goose Creek, near Pass Creek. Director for RDCK Area J, Gordon Zaitsoff expressed thanks on June 26 to all agencies involved in “our local State of Emercency,” Zaitsoff said all situations were handled swiftly. The director distributed kudos to: RDCK Emergency Centre and Staffing; Robson and Ooteschenia fire departments; Ministry of Transportation; Emcon and local contractors; Kalesnikoff Lumber Co.; John Erickson from Deer Park; Scottie’s Marina; FortisBC; Telus, and “All the local residents who assisted their neighbours and communicated situations to local authorities. A job well-done by all involved?” Jim Sinclair photo

What’s New with What’s Old?

Community/Education Tightrope walker pitched mines Exciting challenges are coming up for educator GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

Latest in a series about local collectibles. This month, stuntman Nik Wallenda became the first person in over 110 years to cross Niagara Falls on a tightrope. One person who would have known the feeling was William Leonard Hunt, aka the Great Farini, an American-born, Canadian-raised daredevil who had a direct, but little known West Kootenay connection. Farini walked over Niagara Falls several times beginning in 1860. Once he reached the middle, he climbed down another rope onto the deck of a boat, then climbed back up and went the rest of the way blindfolded. His feat coincided with a similar stunt by the Great Blondin — but Farini drew a bigger crowd. He made other crossings, each more daring than the last: he dangled by his knees, stood on his head, and carried a washing machine.

This stock certificate from the Rossland Gold Mining, Development, and Investment Co., signed by the Great Farini, sold online last week for over $200. Submitted photo

Farini lived the lives of ten men, but in later life preferred to be known as an author, inventor, and mining promoter. Therefore not many people were likely aware of his earlier claim-to-fame when he bought a half-interest in Rossland’s Black Eagle mine in 1896 and became vice-president and manager of the Rossland Gold Mining, Development, and Investment Co. the following year. The company’s properties were on Twelve Mile Creek in the Slocan, including the V&M, Get There Eli (staked by fellow funambulist Eli Carpenter), Mem-

phis, Coronation, and Bachelor — which, according to the Slocan City News of May 15, 1897, “will in future be known as the Farini camp.” Farini also named the Slocan Lake townsite of Vevey, and in turn had a street named after him. The Slocan Pioneer of May 29, 1897 wrote: “Professor Farini, who is developing the Bachelor group, is the father of Vevey, which he christened in grateful memory of the agreeable hours he has dreamed away at the famous Swiss resort …” Vevey never amounted to much beyond one hotel and a ranch.

Farini was later manager of the Oro Gold Mining and Milling Co., which operated the Golden Wedge mine on Lemon Creek. (The phantom townsite of Oro also had a street with his name.) Farini’s optimism about his various claims proved mostly unfounded. He left for Toronto in 1899, never to return, although he and his wife Anna continued to own property in Slocan. Last week an 1897 stock certificate from the Rossland Gold Mining, Development, and Investment Co., signed by Farini, sold on eBay for $202.50 US. The seller, who was aware of its significance, was in New York. Shane Peacock’s 1995 book The Great Farini: The High-Wire Life of William Hunt details Farini’s involvement with the company. About a dozen years ago, Kootenay Coop Radio aired a play by Nelson’s Brian d’Eon about Farini’s life, starring a cast of locals.

Nelson Christian Community School will see some changes as students begin the school year in the fall. Longtime teacher at the school, Chara Rigby will step into the position of principal after nearly eight years as a teacher. “I’ve taught in West Vancouver and in the Nelson school district and then nine years ago I went to Nelson Christian Community School and I started as a principal there,” said Rigby. With young children Rigby stepped away from the administrative role and focused on teaching. Now with her children finished school, she said she has more vision and time to put into the school. “I really feel like we’re growing into a period of moving out into the community now,” said Rigby. “I really want to lead our school into serving the community and teaching the chil-

dren how to give to other people, how to show love to other people, how to apply what they are learning about doing into practical ways so that they have that value in them later in life.” The school current-

“The academic excellence is strong but it isn’t what makes us unique. We focus on creating Christian values into our teaching...” Chara Rigby ly has 32 students enrolled but is hoping to see new faces as they expand, incorporating Grade 7. Currently the school ends at Grade 6 and students have to transfer to other programs. “There has been a desire from some of the families to continue on into Grade 7 for next year, so we’re excited to offer that,” said Rigby. In the various

classes there can be as many as 14 students from two to three grades. Rigby said the school is planning on hiring another teacher to accommodate the growth. “We have a very strong academic program because academic excellence is something that we value and it’s something that we’re known for in the community,” she said. “Our Canadian student test scores have proven that we’ve got results that are 1.5 years a head of the Canadian national average. We have a really quality curriculum. We also have really excellent teachers and small class sizes. The students get a lot of individual attention. “The academic excellence is strong but it isn’t want makes us unique. We focus on creating Christian values into our teaching, the whole curriculum would be values based.”

Community Numbers add up for stellar student July 14, 2012 West Kootenay Advertiser

From elementary school in Trail, to high school in Rossland to the start of post-secondary studies in Castlegar, the awards keep adding up for a local math scholar. Rossland native Julie Nutini, a student at the University of B.C.’s Okanagan campus, was presented with the 2012 Governor General’s Gold Medal for achieving the highest academic standing at the graduate level. The medal, which has been presented nationally since 1873, is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards that a Canadian student can receive. “I am honoured to be the recipient of the Governor General’s Gold Medal this year, said the 24-yearold Nutini in a UBC news release. “It is incredible to have my achievements and hard work recognized in such a prestigious way. She was presented with the award at the UBCO’s convocation ceremonies on June 7. tary School in Trail and graduated from Rossland Secondary School before enrolling at Selkirk College where she began her undergraduate studies. In an email reply to the Trail Daily Times, Nutini credited her teachers at RSS for helping her on her path. “All my teachers at RSS helped to provide me with a solid learning foundation. I started university with the skills and abilities required to be a successful student. “As for how I got into mathematics, my dad was my senior high school mathematics teacher. Without a doubt, my inspiration started with him. She said her love of mathematics is quite

simple. “I love that there is only one right answer in mathematics. Unlike a facts-based course like biology, I love that if you can’t remember how to solve a problem, you have a chance of working through the details and figuring it out. Nutini earned a master’s degree of math at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2010 when she was awarded a Graduate Entrance Scholarship. She also received the UBC Okanagan Scholarship and a UBC Okanagan Fellowship. She worked with UBCO professor Warren Hare on developing a derivativefree optimization algorithm for functions with smooth substructure.

Nutini explained mathematical optimization looks at how to minimize or maximize a function. “For example, in economics, when companies want to minimize loss or maximize profit, they can use an optimization algorithm to do so. Miriam Grant, dean of the College of Graduate Studies, saluted Nutini in a press release. “To cap her student experience at UBC’s Okanagan campus with the Governor General’s Award is a tribute to Julie’s dedication and diligent pursuit of investigative learning at the highest level. Nutini’s education is not finished yet, however. She has been awarded a Postgraduate Scholarship – Doctoral from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and will begin her PhD program in Computer Sciences at UBC’s Vancouver campus starting in September 2012. “I am excited to have the opportunity to continue in my studies, and I am looking forward to the challenges and experiences that the next years hold for me, Nutini said in the release.

Sculpture Talk

Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.

‘Expectant Mother’ (bronze) For an artist still in his thirties, Ben Hammond has achieved a great deal of recognition and acclaim. It is not difficult to understand the plaudits when you look at his body of work. His graceful bronzes are languid, flowing and serenely expressive. ‘Expectant Mother’ is a perfect example of his ability to capture “ the beauty of the human figure as exemplified by my art.” Hair up and wearing a simple shift, a young woman caresses her belly, hands top and bottom. Her face is glowing, eyes cast down in wonderment of the life growing within her. She is content and at peace with herself, marveling at her pregnant condition while contemplative of the future for her and her child. The work was a Best of Show winner last year at the Sioux Falls Sculpturewalk – it’s easy to see why. Hammond’s appreciation for the human figure is impeccably executed, deftly conveying realism and emotion simultaneously. “As I’ve matured as a sculptor I’ve focused on the human body, particularly the feminine form,” says Hammond. “Its elegance is undeniable and the litheness and fluidity of the body lends itself to portrayal in many poses and settings.” Look at his Seasons series. A woman reclines angled on a leaf-strewn trunk, long hair windblown in ‘Fall’, huddles for warmth in a robe in ‘Winter’, revels in seasonal rebirth, breasts barely covered in ‘Spring’ and is at full stretch, garment around her hips and a flower in her hair in ‘Summer’. Each one is evocative and compelling by itself, collectively they capture the magical continuity of the changing

seasons beautifully. Graduating from Ricks College (nowBringham Young University-Idaho) as an illustrator, Hammond was increasingly drawn to sculpture. His traditional style has been honed and refined over time, from early works often based on biblical passages to his more recent focus on the human figure. Always, he sculpts with an eye for detail and beauty. He was awarded the prestigious Charlotte Geffken Prize two years running in the National Competition for Figurative Sculpture. His

work has been commissioned/ exhibited far beyond his home state of Utah; he is represented by galleries in Arizona, New Mexico and Oregon too. Additionally, he is an accomplished portrait artist. For the past five years he has sculpted busts of players, coaches and builders for display in the National Football League’s Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. An elected member of the National Sculpture Society, his talent and relative youth would likely warrant eventual placement in that august body’s Hall of Fame if they had one.

all he can in helping out. He was careful to mention the name of Garth Collins – a man instrumental (if you’ll pardon the expression) in getting the original effort off the ground. Milosevic has

beginners book and cd by Gordon Stobbe and started learning how to play it. “Soon after in April, 2004, I saw an ad in the Trail Times about the B.C. Oldtime Fiddlers Branch #9 putting on a fiddle

many years of experience on the fiddle and other instruments, and holds the group of instructors in the highest regard. Richie Mann of Rossland is also a keen participant. Mann actually took up the challenge of the fiddle relatively late in life, and has been going strong ever since. He leads a Rossland-based group that passes up no opportunity to play. Here’s his story of how he got involved in developing his musical side: “When inheriting my Dad’s violin after he passed away in Feb. 2004, I bought a

camp at Selkirk College in Castlegar and Gordon Stobbe was the head instructor. I thought ‘this is fate talking and I have to go even though I was 70 and thought I would be an old guy in with a bunch of little kids. Am I nuts?’ I hadn’t played an instrument since playing clarinet in our high school band in 1951. As it turned out, I was in Nadia Khristolfson’s class with seven adults and one child. It was a great beginning, we learned Debbie’s Waltz, Swallowtail Jig and Sean Ryan’s Polka. “I have been to every Fiddle Camp at

other young hotshots. “My instructors have all been great and include Nadia Kristolfson, Keith Wilson, Vic Ukrainetz, Gordon Stobbe, Roxanne Sabir and Patti Lamoureaux. “Because of the friends we have made and the music we have learned at the fiddle camp, it encouraged us to start our own fiddle group called the “Golden City Fiddlers” in 2007. We now play for most seniors’ homes in the area, some dances and community events. Great fun! “A big thank-you to the B.C. Oldtime Fiddlers, Branch #9

for organizing and keeping this camp going each year. It has opened up a whole new world for us in our retirement and gives a great start to the younger ones in music.” Young Gabe has been playing fiddle since 2004, six months after Richie got started. “My first teacher was Laila Sabir,” said Gabe via email, “with whom I learned Pelican Reel, Will the Circle be Unbroken, and one more I can’t remember. I was the youngest fiddle player there that year, and got a trophy in recognition of that. After that year, I quickly went up the ranks to the advanced class, where I was taught by such legends as Mark Sullivan and Karnel Sawitzky. Because of the camp, I’ve built up quite a repertoire of amazing tunes.” This is an important event on Castlegar’s calendar, one of particular interest to anyone with an interest in the timeless attraction of learning to play the fiddle, or to play it better. The personal benefits of this kind of pursuit are limitless. Check out kootenayfiddlers.com for registration details, or concert timetables.

There’s a melodic milestone that occurs each summer in Castlegar and it’s literally music to the ears of anyone who has anything to do with it. This summer will mark the 11th running of the BC Old Time Fiddlers Br. #9 summer fiddle camp at Selkirk College. It’ll run from July 16 to 20 and as of June 22 there were over 60 signed up. The good news is that there’s lots of room – pretty much anyone who hasn’t committed can still get in. This is a very serious event, with the well-known and revered Gordon Stobbe of Nova Scotia as head instructor. This is a very big time for learning and inspiration. The camp is the biggest thing that will happen at the college over the summer and, Continuing Education Admissions Officer Krista Batting says it’s a good time for everyone. “Everyone who works at the college enjoys that week,” she says, “because the music is playing all day and it’s just a very happy atmosphere there.” Fiddle-folks converge on Castlegar from “down in the ‘states to up in the Yukon” according to Batting who also listed the instructors’ concerts (a mid-week effort at Trail’s Gyro Park, for example) and students’ wrapup concerts as highlights. “It’s actually a really nice, fun time,” Batting continued. “A lot of our staff and community members come, watch them play and cheer them on.” Fiddle player and Robson resident John Milosevic is a regular at the camp and does

Moto now has a better place to ...cross! SAM VAN SCHIE West Kootenay Advertiser

The Kootenay Motocross club gave its track a complete overhaul this spring. Located between Castlegar and Salmo, the track was redesigned to be safer and more enjoyable for all levels of rider, particularly new riders. Club president Jason Larson said it took two full weekends of work by three professional excavating contractors who donated their time and equipment to make the new track. “If we had to do it ourselves, we’d probably still be out there moving dirt around,” Larson said. “It was a huge job.” The new track has table top jumps where there used to be double jumps, removing the gap that could cause trouble for new riders. Other

problem areas were also smoothed out. As well, all of the track is now visible from the viewing area, where previously there used to be parts where riders couldn’t be seen. Larson said the track still offers plen-

ty of challenges for experienced riders. “There’s always the race against the clock, seeing if you can get through it faster than last time,” he said. The changes seem to be well-received, Larson said, citing increased numbers of

riders coming out to the Wednesday and Sunday open track times. On Sundays, for example, he’s regularly seen 12 to 18 riders sharing the track, where last year there were sometimes as few as eight.

Riders are often divided into two groups based on ability, and they take turns on the track. The course can easily hold 20 riders at a time, and it’s not uncommon at busy tracks to have four ability groups rotating onto the track. With so much potential to grow, Larson said his club is focused on developing new riders. The Kootenay Motocross track is open twice weekly throughout the summer, Wednesdays 4:30 p.m. to dusk and Sundays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Day passes are $20 and a season membership is $100 for adults, $75 for ages 16 and under. For updates on the track, including upcoming events, join the Kootenay Motocross group on Facebook, or visit kootenaymotocross.com.

Follow the Yellow Fish Road in Grand Forks CASSANDRA CHIN West Kootenay Advertiser

Yellow fish can now be seen beside storm drains around Grand Forks thanks to the students at Hutton Elementary School. Teacher Amy Perry noted that around 140 storm drains were painted on 30 different streets in Grand Forks. “We had wonderful feedback from community members (and) people stopped to ask questions and learn about the project,” she said. “Once people learned about what the students were up to, they were thanked for their hard work. One student mentioned that he ‘felt appreciated’ by his community (Anthony Lesley). They all felt a sense of purpose and that they were making a difference for our riv-

ers, our animals and our precious drinking water.” The idea for the yellow fish first came to Perry when she was living in Cranbrook, BC. The Yellow Fish Road program is an initiative started by Trout Unlimited Canada to promote envi-

ronmental education across Canada. The goal is to help Canadians understand the hazards of allowing pollutants to enter storm drains, which lead to rivers, lakes and streams. “Part of our learning on the environment this year was about non-point source pol-

lution, which is pollution that is hard to trace back to one specific source because it comes from so many different places (people),” said Perry. “So the best way to help reduce non-point source pollution is to educate the public. The Yellow Fish Road program gave us the

opportunity to educate the public about storm drains and the effects of toxins entering our beloved rivers.” Perry pointed out that if people have unwanted toxic chemicals or paint, they can take them to the dump where they will be reused or disposed of properly. Student Hannah Semenoff said, “I think they will think it is awesome that we are helping the environment by doing what we are doing.” Fellow student Liam Broad agreed. “Hopefully people will take the painted yellow fish seriously and remember not to dump waste down the storm drains,” he said. Perry would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors who helped with the project.

Rosslanders coming down with a new case of Gold Fever ARNE PETRYSHEN West Kootenay Advertiser

The Gold Fever Follies, Rossland’s local theatre group is back for another sea-

son starting Saturday. This year, the group is doing the original play John vs John, which focuses on another aspect of Rossland’s history.

Lisa Henderson was quite excited about this year’s cast, which includes many new faces but also some that are returning from last year.

Henderson is the artistic director and vice-president of the Follies. She commented that the bottle drive earlier this month went very well.

“The Gold Fever Follies were extremely pleased with the great support we received from our community,” Henderson said. “We had a very successful bottle drive despite our very soggy day.” R.J. Peters is back directing the play, and said that despite the play having an historical aspect, it still has the usual Follies shenanigans, including action, comedy and a love story, as well as a tightly written script by local Ben Turner – a past grad of Rossland Secondary. Peters said Big John

vs John is the story of duelling lawmen, whose names were both John. “John Kerkop was the lawman around these parts for many years, a very popular character from history,” Peters related. “He gets out of sorts with the mayor and gets fired from his job, and is replaced by John Ingram who is our villain in the show. It was the battle between the two lawmen.” Felix LeBlanc is back for another year with the Follies outfit and returns as stage manager.

LeBlanc said the first read-through helps to get the actors into character and is a chance to get input from others in the cast as to which direction they should go. Local Rosslander Jill Amantea is also in the play along with a host of other actors from the West and East Coast. One of the cast members has even come from Korea. Performances take place from June 30 to Aug. 25, with regular showings at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. starting in July, Tuesday through Saturday.

Random acts cultivated

Rossland brief Rossland Council for the Arts and Culture is trying to spruce up downtown Rossland which is in the midst of extensive renovation. To do that, and get a bit of excitement going for the summer, they will put

on “Random Acts of Culture.” The first of these events took place Friday beside the post office on Columbia Avenue. They set up a stand and asked passersby to paint what they like to see from their community.

Community Gems, minerals and fossils pack them in at recreation centre quarries around B.C., Washington and Oregon looking at various rock formations and spots to dig. This sample would be from the Devonian age, somewhere

BARB SINCLAIR WKA Contributor

With buckets of rain coming down all weekend, the second annual Kootenay Gem, Mineral and Fossil Show was a winning escape. Hosted by the Kokanee Rock Club out of Nelson along with the Selkirk Rock Club at the Castlegar Community Complex, June 23, 24, the well-attended venue had much to offer. My tour guide, Linda Barber, took me outside to the goldpanning area where many champion goldpanners were on hand to help others find their treasure in the sand. Linda then took me back inside the complex to dozens of tables of gems, minerals and fossils. The most beautiful crystals and polished rocks were shaped into wonderful

Ambassador program to benefit from show CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter

Former Miss Castlegar Mariah Morris will not only put on a B.C. Ambassador Program scholarship fundraising concert but she will perform in it. Morris, who was Miss Castlegar 2010, will represent Castlegar at the B.C. Ambassador Program which takes place August 17-19 in Merritt. To raise money for scholarships for the candidates, Morris is organizing the July 5 event which features Gilles Parenteau performing his Virtual Symphony. “He’s known around the world, says Morris. “He plays several pianos at the same time. It’s like listening to a complete orchestra. There’s also a visual aspect. He controls ten video cameras which capture his feet and hands.

Mariah Morris will organize and perform at the July 5 event. Craig Lindsay photo

People going to the show will also get to see the re-done Castle Theatre. “It’s beautiful, says Morris. Opening up for Parenteau is Morris herself, who is an accomplished singer in her own right, and Jason Thomas, a country singer from Trail.

The doors open for the concert at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. The Castle Theatre is located at 185 Columbia Avenue in Castlegar. Tickets are available at Mountain FM, HTR, Johnny’s Grocery, and The Bridge in Nelson.

Rising Columbia River has ravenous appetite for boats Trail Briefs Boats are being pulled into the waters of the Columbia River as the water level continues to rise following a spell of warm weather and heavy rainfall in the last few days. Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue (KBRFR) responded to its second unmanned boat river rescue in the last week on the Columbia River just before 7 a.m. Sunday.

Capt. Jason Milne said the rescue proved to just be a boat someone didn’t tie off very well further upstream. By the time river rescue firefighters caught up to the boat near Rock Island they knew it wasn’t a race to save a life, said Capt. Milne. “Fortunately the owner of the boat responded to us when we were recovering the boat so we were able to downgrade it to boat recovery as

opposed to river rescue,” he said. With a high water advisory in place for the West Kootenay the waters of rivers like the Columbia are moving fast and strong. Some of the boats people have docked along the river’s banks aren’t tied off very well, said Capt. Milne, and the river is “grabbing them from the shoreline.” However, every call to the department on

an unmanned boat has to be treated like a rescue call until they know otherwise, he said. Light has been shed on Trail’s newest mural A six-year effort culminated on Friday when new energyefficient lights were officially activated to illuminate the River Reconnect Mural. Trail councillor Gord DeRosa of

the River Reconnect Committee, spearheaded a campaign to have LED street lights installed on the retaining wall of Cominco Arena. “It’s new technology,” said Larry Abenante, Trail’s public works manager. “We’ve used it in other places, but in small doses. This will be one of our big ones and we’ll see how it goes. We are starting to use it on some of our exterior lighting

projects because the (lights) use a lot less energy and require a lot less maintenance.” The lighting component came from a company called Defiant Energy Solutions who provided the LED street lights free of charge. The plan could cut the use of power by 93 per cent because the light emitting diodes are 13 times cheaper than flourescent lighting. “The biggest reason

we contributed to this project is that Trail and a lot of the surrounding businesses gave us a lot of support early on and we (saw) a chance to help out with this beautiful opportunity,” said Travis George, president of Defiant Energy Solutions, who was in Trail last week with the company’s operations manager Raymond Bauman “It was the right thing to do,” added George.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

ffor th the

Week

JJune Ju u 29, 2012

Tip of the Week: Some important astrological events have taken place over the past few weeks that will accelerate the pace and increase the excitement in the world. The long-awaited ďŹ rst ofďŹ cial square between Uranus and Pluto, took place on June 24th. One of the main synchronistic events occurred in Iceland. The headlines read: “Iceland Dismantles Corrupt Government then Arrests All Rothschild Bankers.â€? As the story goes, the 2008 ďŹ nancial collapse in Iceland was traced back to these corrupt institutions. 2008 was the year Pluto, the planet of puriďŹ cation and transformation, entered Capricorn, the sign of governments. This will not be an isolated event and it is simply the fuse of a protracted revolutionary wave. Meanwhile, Venus is now ďŹ nally ‘Direct’ after 6 weeks Retrograde - a particularly challenging cycle. In the short term, this will lead people to simply want to enjoy the season. This will become especially apparent when Mars enters Libra on July 3rd. That is the same day as the charged Full Moon. Mercury turns Retrograde on July 14 in Leo and will coincide with a steadily rising surge of emotion that will increase steadily all summer.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

A mood for fun, play and creativity is on the rise. The biggest challenge is deciphering which one of many activities to do next. Enjoying quality time with family and/or tending to things close to home remain top priorities. Completing projects feels important too and you are focused to do so. Get it done this week though because your practical focus will soon fade for a while.

Activating new streams of income continues. Increasing your overall sense of security is motivating your focus. Discerning between short and long term needs and desires is likely. You are willing to make some investments, yet feel extra cautious and so feel the need to weigh things carefully. It may not be time to commit to long term commitments, yet.

For the sake of security, increasing your net worth feels important, perhaps even necessary. You are willing to take a few risks yet would like to be able to get a sample of the input and outcome implied. Reaching out to gain support requires that you be willing to negotiate a fair deal for all concerned. Take a creative approach to strike a winning deal for all concerned.

The time has come to take decisive action. Dealing with others in positions of power and authority is part of the plot. You may not feel as conďŹ dent as you like. The key is to be wiling to give a lot, perhaps even more than you think you should. Consider all extra efforts to be their own form of insurance, even though the guarantees are not binding.

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

It is important that you look to the future now. Make plans and initiate communications to activate new leads, even if and perhaps ideally from behind the scenes. Exercise full diplomacy in all your dealings. The pace has been steady, perhaps even slow. Yet, it will soon speed up and you will feel moved to break through inner and outer lines of resistance.

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

Increasing your reach to widen your scope of friends and allies continues. The time has come to increase your range of inuence. It should feel easier to do so this week than last. Yet, you may already notice the changes in the natural ow of connections. Focus on your career, improve upon your reputation and make yourself accessible.

Seeing a bigger picture is a current theme. Looking to the future and taking a creative approach is implied. Doing inner work to confront any lingering fears has been an important theme. Soon the focus will turn to contend with outer opposition. This will lead you to get information and answers. Deciphering what constitutes wisdom verses knowledge is the deeper theme.

Decisions to take initiatives that reveal steadily changing perspectives will have an impact on your usual daily rhythms. You may be pulled in two or more directions. Going back to the way things were is less than likely. Yet, even the idea of it may feel good for now. Implement creative coping strategies to wait for clear signs about future directions.

The count down has been on for many and now it is time to take decisive action. Dealing with more people and situations is likely and this trend will continue. At best, your popularity is on the rise. At worst, you are uncertain about who your true friends are. Perhaps most importantly regarding the future, consider your health and what you can do to improve it.

Changes in your lifestyle are affecting some of your closest relationships. The opposite may also be true. These are leading you to concentrate and dig for ideas and answers. Your conďŹ dence levels may be wavering and you are challenged to keep an over active imagination in check. Asserting your will to make needed changes close to home is featured.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

Awakening to new realizations about your self, the world and the future has likely been a steadily rising theme. Now it is time to at least consider doing something more deliberately about it. Your determination and will to take decisive action will rise steadily over the next several weeks. Weaving fun and social activity into your focus is likely and ideal.

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

As if suddenly, you are getting more attention. Gatherings and cultural activities with friends will prove inspiring. With your conďŹ dences on the rise, the time is right to solidify your overall foundation. Taking a cooperative approach will work best. Who are those key contacts that can assist you to open new doors of opportunity?

ONE HUNDRED years in the life of a universe is hardly the blink of an eye. One Hundred years in the life of a city or a family is much more significant. We are pleased to announce that the year 2012 is the Centennial anniversary of the Tadevic family’s arrival in Trail, BC. Because we don’t actually have a date, we have chosen July 1, Canada Day, as that date. Happy one hundredth anniversary Tadevic family.
