City staffer says dismissal was unjustifed AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter A city employee is saying she was “unjustly let go� and Coun. Sushil Thapar is backing her claim. “Mayor and council did not have the authority to dismiss her without cause,� Thapar said of recently-fired human resource advisor, Meriel Wild. Wild, with the city close to 10 years, says it all began when she filed a bullying and harassment complaint against then city manager John Stecyk. “I was on stress leave, signed off by my doctor,� she said.
Wild said when she was healthy enough to go back, she was “dismissed.� “I can’t imagine any reason for my dismissal,� she said. “This was certainly without cause.� Thapar agrees, saying Wild was a “very honest, hardworking, long-time employee.� “You do not just fire someone because they take stress leave over a harassment issue,� he said. “She’s dedicated and by the book and these morons fire her?� And aside from losing a qualified employee who

has saved the city “tens of thousands of dollars� Thapar says the wrongful dismissal case could end up costing taxpayers “hundreds of thousands.� “We’re looking at court costs, damages and back pay,� he said. “The financial implications are huge. She’s [Mayor Mary Sjostrom] lost her mind.� Thapar further alleges Sjostrom approved of Wild’s firing so she could hire an employee who would do her bidding. Sjostrom maintains all allegations are completely false, but stated confidentiality agreements prevented her from saying more.
“City council is bound by confidentiality and we do not discuss staffing [human resource) issues in public,� she said. “Decisions are made by the council as a whole including the mayor. Administration is currently working on this file.� Thapar acknowledged the decision was by council consensus, but said current members are not only inexperienced but “blindly following the mayor.� “This is a ‘yes mama’ council,� he said. As for Wild, she says she’s stuck in a Catch 22. “I don’t want the taxpayers to have to foot this bill,� she said.

Dominion Day celebrates colonies One-hundred and forty-five years ago, three British colonies – Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the territory containing Ontario and Quebec – put aside their differences in language, legalcustom, and historical dispute to create the beginnings of what we now call Canada. One year later, the gold mining town of Barkerville, British Columbia celebrated the anniversary of that historic union by throwing the first-ever recorded “Dominion Day” party, July 1, 1868 – a full three years before BC actually joined the Confederation. This July 1, Barkerville Historic Town is at it again – as part of the renowned heritage site’s own 150th anniversary season and Dominion Day is set to explode (almost literally) with sesquicentennial fun. “With our awardwinning street interpretation, a brand new exhibit opening for summer 2012, and familyoriented activities and events all day long, Barkerville’s Dominion Day celebrations are going to be more exciting than ever before,” Barkerville’s special event coordinator, Fairlith Harvey said. “We are particularly excited to be hosting Canada’s 145th birthday bash in the

Timber Supply Committee Coming to Quesnel BC’s Special Committee on Timber Supply is holding public meetings in Quesnel and Williams Lake next week, and if you’re concerned about the future of our forests and the forest industry then this is a great opportunity to have your say. The Committee was formed earlier this year in response to the mid-term timber supply shortage, and the MLAs on the Committee are working on a report to provide “recommendations that could increase timber supply.” They’ve been touring the province to find out what British Columbians think about the options being considered, and their report will be released on August 15th. The Committee is looking for feedback about: the principles that should guide government attempts to mitigate the timber supply shortage (such as lifting harvesting constraints or harvesting marginally economic timber); how these decisions should be made, and by whom; local issues that you think should be considered; and advice about “whether and how” to mitigate the timber supply shortage. I
t’s time for the government to stop studying, counting and discussing the plight of the forests and get to the business of reforestation. In an interview Thursday morning, Forest Minister Steve Thomson was asked when the government will put tree planters on the ground and get on with the business of rebuilding an industry devasted by the pine beetle epidemic. His answer was more political double speak, a lot of repeating himself and no action. Communities in the north, especially those dependent on the forests, have watched the swift decline of this vital industry and many have called on the government to address this issue, especially in the critical area of reforestation. No trees, no industry. The Forest Practice Board, an independent watchdog organization, on Tuesday called for the government to act swiftly on reforestation, “The total area of B.C.’s provincial forests that may need to be restocked with healthy young trees could exceed current reforestation efforts by more than one million hectares.” The release went on to say although plans are in place for many of these areas, the government is waiting to see if they will be harvested, therefore downloading the reforestation effort onto industry. Thomson, in the interview, went so far as to say they were waiting for the pine beetle infestation to run its course, to see where it would be most cost-effective to replant. He admitted much of that information is already available but still insisted more inventory work must be done. Forest-dependent communities can’t wait. Jobs are already being lost, mills closing, towns emptying. It would appear the government’s love affair with forestry is waning in favour of the newest heartthrob, oil and gas, case in point, the premier’s recent announcement that natural gas is a green fuel. Wasting time on yet more planning, studying, counting inventory and discussions with industry, along with a wait and see attitude, isn’t going to get those trees planted. – Annie Gallant, Cariboo Observer
Weighing in, food for thought Y
ou are what you eat, and I’m tired of feeling like junk. So, guess what? I’m finally doing something about it. Since adolescence I’ve used unhealthy foods to deal with uncomfortable feelings of anxiety, stress and depression comparable to a drug addict or an alcoholic. I’m 45 now and this has been a big issue in my life for the last 30 years. I’m 5-foot-6-inches tall and I’ve been as heavy as 215 pounds and as light as 125 pounds, but no matter what weight I’ve been, I’ve never given up on the junk. Even when I was at my lowest weight, which turned out to be too thin to maintain, I still consumed lots of candies, refined carbs and diet sodas, so I was never the picture of health. “You’re a thin person in a fat person’s body,” a gym owner once told me in my second hour on his sweatsoaked treadmill. I was insulted at the time, but he was right. I was skinny from my calorie-restricted diet and my workout overloads, but

On A Brighter Note I wasn’t healthy. As always, I was treating my body like a garbage disposal unit. Why? Initially I didn’t know any better. As a tween I slept with bricks on my stomach thinking that would flatten my belly. It didn’t. As a teen working at McDonalds, I’d survive on Big Macs and chicken nuggets, gain weight and then suddenly limit myself to grapefruit juice and mixed nuts. Of course I’d lose weight on a silly diet like that, but I’d always gain it back. After succeeding and failing on so many different diets over the years, I started learning more about my physical make-up as well as what’s psychologically

It’s easy to say these words in a moment of strength, but what will I do when I get that overwhelming desire to self-sabotage like I always do? My plan is to write about the experience in a journal and record everything I consume on MyFitnessPal. com, a free diet and fitness site supporting people with health goals. I want to know the reason I deliberately spoil my welllaid plans and the trick to conquering this behaviour. driving me to self-sabotage when I’m just starting to feel and look good. This is a complicated issue and anyone who thinks dieting is pure mathematics obviously doesn’t have the same problems that I, and millions of others do when it comes to food addiction. Or perhaps I should say junk addiction, because it’s not real food that’s the issue. It’s the processed crap that passes for food in the grocery store and often has little or no nutritional value whatsoever. “I stick to the outside perimeter of the store when I go grocery shopping,” my friend told me recently. “Haven’t you ever noticed that all the packaged stuff that our bodies don’t need is in the middle aisles?” I have noticed that and I’ve had that pointed out to me many times. Yet just because you know the facts doesn’t mean you’ll make wise decisions. Any smoker can tell you that. As I mentioned, I’m tired of feeling like junk, so I’m not putting any more of it into my body.

gesture of your young girl guides (I am not sure of the actual group name), these lovely young girls waited until the train arrived, which was delayed until about 8 p.m., and offered a gift of a couple of cookies. This I thought was a very pleasing gesture from a community group who did not know me or my wife or the people who travelled to your community. They were joined by other young ladies who must have been entrants in a Miss Quesnel competition. Also there was the local vintage car
club. As a traveller from the other side of the world, this was a simple gesture of openness and warmth in an welcoming to your community. I made a mental note that I would send a very heart–felt thank you to you to convey to these young members of a wonderful community. Astrophysicist Jason Kalirai is living his high school dream
S
taring up at the night sky as a child, Jason Kalirai was fascinated. He pondered questions like how big is the Universe and how many stars and galaxies are out there? He credits his father with instilling a curiosity which has carried this Quesnelite all the way to the Space Telescope Science Institute in Maryland, where he’s currently working on NASA’s next generation James Webb Space Telescope which will replace the Hubble when launched in 2018. Dr. Kalirai has realized his dream of becoming an astrophysicist and every day he devotes his intelligence, training, education and experience to the biggest question of all, where do we all come from? He began to fine-tune
his focus in Grade 11 and 12. Already an outstanding math student, Jason discovered a love of physics through his Correlieu physics teacher Ray Blais. “Physics presents problems you may never have seen before, but it also provides the foundation to solve those problems, very analytical, I like that,” he said. However, when Jason discovered Blais held a degree in astronomy, he zeroed in on picking his teacher’s brain as to how he could pursue that profession. “I remember Jason as a very bright student with a million questions,” Blais said. “I think that now, the master teacher/student relationship has reversed. The student has become a master of the subject.”
Ray Blais is retiring from teaching this year. He summed how he feels about his students. “I believe all my students have great potential and Jason has certainly demonstrated his potential in what he has achieved. Today I can say I’m proud of what he has done with his life and wish him great success in the future.” After graduating from Correlieu in 1996, Jason headed off to the University of British Columbia with stars in his head. He enrolled in a combined Honours Physics and Astronomy program and by his fourth year as an undergraduate, Jason began doing research. He was chosen to work with one of his professors (also coincidentally a professor who taught Ray Blais) Dr.
Harvey Richer, a stellar astronomer who introduced the young scientist to white dwarfs. “These stars have incredible properties, they are the cinders of stellar evolution,” Jason said. He continued to work with Dr. Richer at UBC and completed both a Masters of Science (MSc) degree in 2001 and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 2004. He chose to stay at UBC despite having offers from many U.S. universities and a national fellowship to study anywhere in Canada. Jason explained that a star is born from a cloud of gas and dust in space. Those clouds are bound by gravity and if the mass of that cloud is large enough, it collapses in on itself. The pressure and
the temperature at the centre can increase to the point that hydrogen atoms fuse together to form helium. A star is born! Over millions, and even billions of years, stars burn brightly but eventually exhaust their hydrogen fuel. What’s left is a shrivelled core – a white dwarf. Jason has devoted research time since those early undergraduate years to learning more about white dwarfs and was recently credited by the journal “Nature” with devising a way to date these, the oldest, stars in the Milky Way galaxy. His research represents a critical element of understanding how our Milky Way galaxy built itself up over billions of years from smaller galaxies. “White dwarfs are
remarkable, their density is about a million times more dense than matter on earth, a tablespoon of white dwarf matter would weigh as much as a school bus on Earth,” he said. These properties leave a unique signature in their spectra that Jason has been measuring. His research with white dwarfs, and other topics in stellar and galactic astrophysics continues. But, his work on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has this astrophysicist absolutely fascinated. World class scientist on JWST team
from A16 Once launched, the James Webb Space Telescope will be parked approximately 1.5 million km from Earth, past the Moon, deep into the coldest of environments. This is to ensure that the telescope can make the most sensitive observations of the faint glow from distant astronomical objects in the cosmos. “This future space telescope is one of NASA’s top priorities,” Jason said of his employer. At a cost of $8 billion, JWST is a NASA-led project, but represents an international collaboration of about 17 countries with significant contributions from the Canadian Space Agency and the European Space Agency. “I spend a lot of time thinking and working on this project,” Jason added. “This telescope is a game changer for astronomers across the world.” He went on to say the 21-foot gold-coated beryllium reflector mirror is finished and the other supporting instrumentation is currently being finished. The completed telescope will be the size of a tennis court. “We’re going into the phase of integrat-
ing all the elements,” he said. “One of the things Hubble has given us is an appreciation of the size of the universe, JWST will reach back to the early formation of the universe and characterize these early galaxies. These are the seeds of the wonderful spiral and elliptical galaxies we see littered across the night sky now. It will also measure light from the first stars that turned on shortly after the Big Bang. With JWST, astronomers will use infrared observations to identify new planets going around other stars in the Milky Way galaxy.” JWST will also be able to sort out planetary atmospheres around distant stars and determine if water is present. “Just like every human being has a unique fingerprint, every planet has a unique atmosphere and one of the key properties that we want to measure is water vapour, which may be a sign of liquid oceans. This telescope will bring us one step closer to knowing if life exists on other planets.” Once launched, the Space Telescope Science Institute on the John Hopkins Uni-

Richert named fire inspector and safety officer The City has named Ron Richert as its new Fire Inspector/ Safety Officer. Richert has been an active member of the Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department since 1998, and holds the rank of Acting Lieutenant. The Fire Inspector/ Safety Officer’s role is varied. Some of the many responsibilities include: conducting fire inspections of public and private buildings; developing safety program to ensure Workers Compensation Board compliance; coordinating the City’s occupational
health and safety program; and many other public safety initiatives, including fire safety education programs with the School District. Richert has taken extensive training courses with the Justice Institute of British Columbia’s Fire and Safety division as well as other training agencies. “We’re very fortunate to have a member of Ron’s caliber available to take on this critical public safety role,” Fire Chief Sylvain Gauthier said. “We had a
number of qualified and outstanding applicants from within our department, which speaks to the dedication and extra lengths these
members go to serve our community.” Richert, who begins work on July 3, replaces Mike Russell, who moved into the Deputy Chief position earlier this year.

Composting: a simple way to amend soil Baker Creek Enhancement Society, Quesnel Community Gardens and Quesnel Climate Action Group invite you to create a backyard compost! Also, join the Wednesday morning work-bees from 10 – 12 p.m. at the community gardens, behind QJS, to help with weeding and chores, meet other gardeners and share in the harvest. The gardens are soon to get a new gazebo, so if you’d like to help, come on down to the community gardens.
To make backyard compost Choose a bin. There are free wood pallets at the Community Garden you can use to create a great bin. Three to five feet across allows proper air circulation. Gather equal weights of carbon/brown (ex. shredded dry leaves) and nitrogen/green (ex. Peels, rinds, coffee grounds) materials. Layer around a holey pipe: brown materials, green materials, sprinkle with water, and a bucket of finished compost or soil to activate. Repeat layers. All compostable materials are either carbon or nitrogen-based. The secret to a healthy compost pile is simple: maintain a working balance between these two elements. If you’d like to see a different kind of composting system come to the Nature Centre and take a look at our vermicompost. Worms will eat a quarter to half their weight per day and can be kept indoors or outdoors. We can also give you instructions to make your own vermicompost. The QYSA finished up their season with a tournament/celebration that the sky blessed with a brilliant, blue. In the morning the leagues finished up their play, with U9 and 10 mixed and U11 and 12 girls playing. In the afternoon the jamboree commenced with eight teams of 5-8-yearolds playing pairing off for 15 minute games, then swapping teams. The jamboree was in good fun. The kids and coaches had big smiles and for a few games the parents jumped in to play with the kids. With the jamboree, parents watching, medals being given out and older kids practicing in the wings, the field was awash with activity. After the kids were played out, everyone was ready for lunch and settled down to hotdogs and pop.

Lacrosse year-end wrap up: They are on fire JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The Wildfire burned brightly at the zone finals last weekend. Both bantam and peewee iterations of the team captured the banner for the zone as well as the chance to go to Calgary and compete against teams from all over Canada and the world. The midgets weren’t able to capture the banner, but did do well enough to continue their season at the provincials. The novices were out in full force as well. In that class, everyone was a winner. The Bantams had a banner year, running roughshod over everyone they came up against in their lossless season. The team has been together for a long time, with a core nucleus of players who have played together for five years, said Coach Mike Russell. With all that time together the team works well. The coach did however have a couple players with whom he was particularly impressed. Dylan Cathcart led
the way in scoring for the team. Compounding Cathcarts scoring with the brilliant goalkeeping of Thomas Reistadt made for a hard to beat team. Add in the leadership of Travis Gook and the rest of the team’s willingness to work and what you got was an unbeatable team. The tournament itself went much like the rest of the season with 12-4 win against Mackenzie and a 6-2 win against the P.G. Roughnecks. The wins weren’t easy though. Mackenzie came out strong early in the game, racking all four of their goals before the Wildfire woke up. However, after coming to their senses the Wildfire let it be known none would beat them with a twelve goal unanswered streak. For the last two years, the team has nabbed the runner-up position in the Calgary tournament they are off to this weekend. This year, they hope for something more. “We’re going in with high hopes of getting our name on the banner again, but this time not as runner-ups.”
The peewee Wildfire burned through their opponents nearly as efficiently as the bantams, with only two losses to their name after a long hard season. “It was an uphill battle from the start, but we came out on top,” said coach Brian Jarvis. Though the team started out a bit overrambunctious, Jarvis said the team has grown and is now one of the most respectful teams in the league. The peewee team had two P.G. teams to beat in the Championships for the spot in the Calgary tournament, one of which they were tied with for first. The game against the Prince George Swarm was a close affair, with only one point between the winning Wildfire and the Swarm, with a final score of 6-5. The Prince George Posse, with whom the Wildfire were tied going into the tournament, proved to be less of a challenge for the Wildfire. With the momentum of the first win, the Wildfire kept up the pressure and burned through the Posse, with a 10-6 victory.
Jarvis credited the goalie, Cole Moxam, with great play that helped the team top their competitors. The team gains two new players from Williams Lake and five from Mackenzie for the trip to the Calgary tournament.

Golf
Quesnel Open Golfers from all over B.C. showed up at the Quesnel Men's Open last weekend to try and take the the oldest trophy in northern B.C. While the weather bounced to terrible in the evenings, during golfing hours the course stayed dry, allowing the tournament to continue unimpeded. Quesnel's own Real Gamache was the overall gross winner, with an uncorrected score of 142. Wes Arnot, also of Quesnel, was the overall net winner, with a final score of 134. Wayne Carifielle of Quesnel took the gross win for the first flight with a score of 147. Cole Shaw from P.G. took the second place, with 149, followed by fellow P.G.er Wil Gilbert at 150. Local Dennis England took the top spot in the first flight of the net category, at 135. Chris Stevens out of 108 Mile took second, followed by Steve Sheldon, Quesnel, both at 145. The tournament also featured KPs on holes three, seven, 14 and 16, as well as long drive competitions on holes two and 10. On Saturday local Wayne Carifelle Sr. got the KP on hole three. Harrison Stoneman, out of Quesnel, took the honour on hole seven and Chris Stevens, hole 14. Tom Merrick, hailing from Williams Lake, rounded out the Saturday KP's on Hole 16. Sunday the KPs continued, with Ryan LeBlanc, local, Wil Gilbert, P.G., Levi Langevin, P.G., and local Ron Lucas taking the KPs on three, seven 14 and 16 respectively. Long Drive on hole two was taken by local Rod Albers on both Saturday and Sunday. Sandy Watson, Quesnel, and Jim Rolston, Williams Lake, took the long drive for hole 10 Saturday and Sunday respectively.

In a continued effort to encourage higher rates of recovery, BCUOMA has built a strong support network across the province. Today, participation includes 209 brand-owner members, 39 collectors and processors, 520+ return collection facilities and more than 4,000 generators. In addition, BCUOMA is reprising its successful ambassador program this summer – with two ambassadors touring the province to educate and raise awareness of the importance of used oil and antifreeze recycling.
Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are not household garbage we can simply throw out, more than one million litres of used oil ends up in BC landfills every year. When you consider that it only takes one drop of oil to contaminate a million drops of water, the problem is clear: there’s just too many drops to count, too many to ignore. BCUOMA is a non-for-profit organization that encourages British Columbians to responsibly recycle used oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers. Since the launch of the program in 2003, British Columbians have done an exceptional job of recycling their used oil materials.

Serve fresh broccoli salad with just a hint of curry One of the great things about living in Canada is the variety of fresh vegetables available for health-conscious dishes. Try this delicious salad to take advantage of the locally-grown broccoli thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in-season this summer. Serves: 12 Prep Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 2 minutes
Ingredients 1 L (4 cups) fresh broccoli, trimmed and coarsely chopped 75 mL (1/3 cup) real mayonnaise 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped 125 mL (½ cup) golden raisins 10 mL (2 tsp) fresh lemon juice 10 mL 5 mL (1 tsp) curry powder 50 mL (1/4 cup) sliced almonds, toasted
Instructions Cook broccoli in lightly
salted boiling water for two minutes; drain. Place broccoli in a bowl of ice water to stop further cooking; drain well, and pat with a paper towel. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients except almonds. Chill until ready to serve. To serve, stir in almonds and season if desired with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.

The Housewife You’re up in the morning, breakfasts in store, There’s some fifty jobs waiting and probably more. You do up the dishes and send the kids off to school, For they must now learn of the every day rule. You make all the beds and iron the clothes, The bread now needs baking, there’s no time to doze. The next thing in order is to clean up the house, Start thinking of supper for your hard working spouse. You may have to go shopping for food for your mate, It must be cooked well, and placed neat on the plate. Pretty soon now, school will be out
for the day, The children will then have some time out to play. The next thing you know, dad is home for his dinner, We sit down to eat, each one is a winner. Everyone’s talking of the day that they spent, Of working and playing and just how things went. Very soon now, the day’s come to a rest, The children are sleeping, we’ve all done our best. We too head to bed to read by the light, In hopes we’ll have sweet dreams while sleeping tonight. Elaine Couldwell
An Ancient Road The trail is like a thread Through the fabric of the land. It joins blue watershed To the hills of rock and sand. Dad My dad was born in North Platte, Nebraska in year 1909, He was the eldest of four, to him that was fine. His dad’s name was Jess, his mother’s was Grace, When Dad was eight they moved from their place. To the state of Montana to their family they came, A ranch to raise horses and a wild land to tame. Dad worked with horses, and horse logging too, They worked and they played under skies that were blue. Washington also they lived for awhile, Cashmere was the town, they gave it a trial. From Canada came word of a ranch for sale, Along the Cariboo highway, came it in the mail. They stepped off of the train at a place called Dragon siding, Under four feet of snow the landscape was hiding. Dad said he stepped in snow clear up to his chin, What he wanted to say was certainly a sin. In Quesnel he said he would leave the next day, It also brought circumstances that caused him to stay. The ranch on the highway was a beautiful spot, They purchased the property with careful thought. Of getting the home ready for the family to come, Dad’s mom and sisters came on the next run. On the Pacific Great Eastern from Ashcroft did come. The Harndens accepted an invitation one evening, A supper at Pettyjohns they were gladly receiving. Dad had heard of my mom, who was the bell of the ball, She had dark hair and eyes, was gorgeously tall. To return to the States was very far from his mind, For this girl that he met was one of a kind. In 1929 he made her his bride, He was always so happy to have her by his side. He built a house for the bride he would take, To live on the ranch at beautiful China Lake. They worked hard and made it as productive as could be, Raising cattle and sheep becoming self sustaining was the key. They grew potatoes and carrots and
had pigs to be fed, Had 200 laying hens called the Rhode Island Red. Eight cows were milked both morning and night. We were up in the morning the first shade of light. I learned to herd cows, got pretty good with a rope, I had a pretty little mare, that I always rode at a lope. I was always watching when horses were shod, With shoes that were made from an iron rod. Summers were busy putting up hay, We would wait for the heat to dry it okay. Our gardens would produce a pretty heavy yield, With a team and a stone boat it was brought in from the field. We had two root houses built in a hill that was steep, Both of them were filled with produce to keep. A time to butcher came in the fall, beef, pork, moose and chickens a few, We were taught to do this by parents who knew. My dad got some timber down on Durrell hill, There built and set up a one man sawmill. There was always sawdust to shovel and lumber to pile, We got a little rest, when the head saw he would file. I learned to use the crosscut, skid logs with the team, Everyday after school, this was always our theme. My dad to us was a pretty good teacher, He taught us to do things but was never a preacher. Of these memories I enjoy, I will always be glad, The work that we did, the fun that we had. The evenings were spent sitting around the fire, We would sing all the songs, dad didn’t seem to tire. Of the music by guitar and organ to hear, My mother played them all and always by ear. This is the month to remember your father, This message today, comes from your daughter.
