KITIMAT - At just over 180 days old, the Kitimat Food Share program is setting their sights on establishing a farmer’s market and community garden in Kitimat. Liz MacDonald presented their plan for stage two of the food share program while talking of the program’s success since it began last November. They’ve shared over 47,705 lbs of food, she said, and have
fed close to 14,000 people from Kitimat and Kitamaat Village. Kitimat council has directed administration to accommodate plans for a farmer’s market at Mountainview Square’s parking lot, as well to come back to council on a report regarding the plans for a community garden in the same complex. MacDonald said that they already have approximately 25 vendors interested in selling in a Kitimat market. “We’re hoping to have a pub-
lic market every second Sunday in Kitimat and our goal, in the long run, is to have Mountainview Square become a public market place.� MacDonald envisioned a place where families could come and eat meals at picnic tables. “Kitimat needs a bright space, a sort of a picnic place in the downtown area, and in front of the mall is not going to be that.� The enclosed area of Mountainview Square is easy and cen-
tral, she said, and will allow participation from mental health patients and multi-level care residents. Talk is also ongoing to have Kildala Elementary School participate in some fashion as well. The proposal was universally well received by councillors at last week’s meeting. Mary Murphy told MacDonald that she hopes it happens because there are a lot of older people in Kitimat who cannot look after their own gardens.

TERRACE - Nearly 30 women protested a June 19 Enbridge-sponsored luncheon attended by other women, saying it was an attempt to gain favour for the company’s Northern Gateway Pipeline plan. The event called on women to have a “heart to heart” with Enbridge officials over the community’s future. But protest organizers say the agenda was not about having women discuss the future but to organize support for Enbridge. Twenty women attended the event held inside Northwest Community College’s longhouse where lunch was served and paid for by Enbridge and female Enbridge employees were in attendance. Nearly 30 women stood outside, wearing anti-Enbridge-themed attire. Some women who had planned to attend turned away at the sight of the protesters, said one event organizer and Enbridge employee Lucy Praught. “Cross sections of leaders from education and the business community to concerned and curious mothers were present in the room,” said Praught, adding, “it would have been great for more concerned women to join us at the table and to share their vision for the community in a way that others could be engaged and
listen to understand all sides of the story.” But protesters disputed the intent of the luncheon. “We’re not interested in breaking bread with them,” said one protest organizer, Lori Merrill, about Enbridge officials in attendance. “We were insulted that they would come try to buy us lunch.” According to Merrill, conversations and concerns about the pipeline have happened already and that some women, herself included, are already opposed to the Northern Gateway plan. Having lunch and talking will not sway opinions on either side, she said. “I was proud to stand with Terrace women [last week] and say ‘no thank you,’” Merrill said. Another protester, Julia Hill, said opposition was aimed at the event, not the women who were inside the longhouse. “Let’s leave the people out of it ... the moment we bring people into it is the moment we divide people,” said Hill. “It’s about the issue.” The issue to Hill is the possibility of an oilcarrying pipeline being built through the northern wilderness and the possibility that a leak or spill will cause environmental damage. “There is nothing they can say to us that will change our minds,” she said. “There is nothing we can say to them that can change theirs.

TERRACE - It’s DARE graduation day for a class of grade 5 /6 students from Ecole Mountainview School, where alongside members of the Terrcae RCMP detachment students learned to say no to drugs and alcohol. Kidney car can collect old vehicles in Kitimat By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - The Unsightly Premises Task Force has opened the summer season with a new partnership aimed at cleaning up old cars from Kitimat’s streets. The program is called Kidney Car, and it’s a recycling program that has the potential to make the environment a little cleaner, as well as our streets.

Vehicle owners who call will have their car picked up by a local tow truck operator for free and will be given an income tax receipt for the contribution. Anyone with a car taking up space on their property — provided they are the registered owner — can call 1-800585-4479 to arrange to have their old car taken away. Kidney Car is a fundraising program of the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
Car wash proposal KITIMAT - Kitimat Council gave first and second reading to an amendment to the C5 Zone bylaw which would allow for a car wash after an application to build one in Kitimat was submitted.
The applicant is seeking to open a seven bay car wash between the Legion and Rosario’s Restaurant on Legion Avenue. A public hearing on this proposal is scheduled for July 16.

Architect wants to help develop vision for Co-op lands By Lauren Benn THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - A world-famous architect touched down in Terrace last week to share his vision for Terrace’s former Co-op property. Douglas Cardinal, who has worked on buildings internationally alongside figures like former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, talked about what he would do if asked to design a building for the now-vacant Greig Ave. city-owned space. Cardinal talked first with the city’s Co-op property task force and then with a room of more than 100 people who gathered at Northwest Community College’s Longhouse June 19. The presentations talked about

Cardinal’s creative process — about how he sees the Co-op property to be at the heart of the community — and why to design a building for the space, his process includes listening to and involving people. “It’s not tokenism,� he said. “You have to be able to truly listen and incorporate their ideas and their mandates and agendas ... to craft a vision that resonates with the people is extremely important. “When you’re looking at planning any large building you have to look at the community ... as a whole entire organism that works together,� he added. Cardinal was invited by Sasa Loggin, who sits on the task-force as a representative from the Skeena Diversity Society.
“Sasa called the office and we were talking about the future planning and development of the area,� said Cardinal after the presentations. “If the people here would like me to work with them I’d be happy to.� As Cardinal resides in the Ottawa, Ontario area, he said that he’s made a decided effort to spend more time out west where he can be closer to family as he grew up on this side of the country. That mixed with his experience working in comparatively smaller communities was a draw for him to come here. But should he be asked to build a building for the Co-op property, Cardinal said it would not be “his� building. “I try to encourage people to re-
alize they have the power ... to make a difference,â€? he said, emphasizing the importance of working to achieve a vision that works for everyone. And his words aren’t merely lip-service to an ideology — Cardinal has a proven track record of community involvement in buildings that serve many interests, not just his own vision. An example of this is the OujĂŠBougoumou Cree village located in Quebec near James Bay. “We were threatened and coerced into abandoning our village sites which were then bulldozed and destroyed,â€? said a historical summary on the OujĂŠ-Bougoumou website, citing increasing industry interest in their traditional territory
as the reason. By 1992, after a decade-long fight involving various levels of government, the OujĂŠ-Bougoumou Cree reached agreements with both Canada and Quebec which included paying for a new village to be built. Cardinal designed the village and community members there were actively involved in the process. “Throughout our planning and construction the community members have participated at every level of decision-making and direction-setting, from the expression of hopes, dreams and visions, to decisions on more technical matters involving the direction of basic construction issues,â€? said a story on the OujĂŠ-Bougoumou website about the village.

Northwest behind BC in health stats By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT Stats Canada released their 2012 health profile on June 19, and the numbers from last year show the northwest falls well behind the province when it comes to a number of health indicators. In terms of perceived health, only 53.1 per cent of people in the northwest say they perceive to have very good or excellent health. That number is below the 59.6 per cent in the province and is the lowest in northern BC compared to the 53.3 per cent in the interior and the 61.1 per cent in the northeast. In terms of mental health, 63.4 per cent of people said they perceive it to be good or excellent, again well below the 71 per cent in the province and the lowest in Northern Health when compared to 67.1 per cent in the northern interior and 73.2 per cent in the northeast. Despite those numbers, people in the northwest have a lower per cent who perceive life stress at 20.2 per cent compared to 21.4 per cent in BC, 22.3 per cent in the northern interior
and 22.2 per cent in the northeast. When it comes to weight concerns, 62.1 per cent of people int the Northwest Health Services Delivery Area were reported as being overweight or obese, while across the province the number was 44.7 per cent. The number for the region is also the highest in Northern Health, with 54.9 per cent reporting being obese or overweight in the north-
ern interior and 58.2 per cent reporting the same in the northeast. People in the northwest also have a higher percentage of high blood pressure than others in BC and northern BC, with 16.7 per cent reporting high blood pressure compared to 14.9 per cent across the province, 15.9 per cent in the interior and 12.8 per cent in the northeast. In the northwest 20.9 per cent of people
say they smoke daily or occasionally, well above the 16.7 per cent in the province. However, both the interior and the northeast have higher rates of smoking at 23.4 per cent and 27.7 per cent respectively. When it comes to heavy drinking, 19.5 per cent are reportedly heavy drinkers compared to 19.8 per cent in the interior, 18 per cent in the northeast and 15.8 per cent in the province.

The pond is a good place for people to learn about wildlife, says Kirby, but when visitors stir up the silt in the pond, the silt plugs the gills of the tadpoles and small amphibians and they can’t breathe. Her group is also collecting environmental data and aim to monitor the pond for the next 40 years.

Coastal wilderness trail opening MAKING A By Alan S. Hale
THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
METLAKATLA - The Metlakatla Wilderness Trail was given a grand opening ceremony in Metlakatla Village last Friday. The ceremony was held at the trailhead located at the north end of the village and was attended by representatives of many organizations and businesses. Many were from organizations involved in funding the construction of the trail, such as Ridley Terminals Inc, Metlakatla Development Corporation, the Coast Sustainability Trust, BC Construction Association and Community Futures. Elders from the village blessed the trail after a short prayer by laying cedar branches at the beginning of the new trail. They then cut a ribbon made of woven cedar to officially open it. The trail has been a project three years in the making, and cost about $800,000 to build, much of that contributed by a couple different organizations. The trail is about 10 kilometers and runs through the forest up the west coast of the Tsimshian Peninsula. After the ceremony was over, the representatives were given the first guided tour of the trail, which the Metlakatla Band and BC Tourism hope will draw many. The trail weaves through the incredibly tall, mostly branchless trees that make up the forest around the village. The winding trail has literally been cut through the ancient forest and follows the coastline and crosses inlets, streams, marshes with the use of boardwalks and three metal suspension bridges. Culturally modified cedar trees can be seen along the trail, some of them very new and some very old. The trail also includes two lookout towers connected together by a suspended walkway for people to climb up and take in the coastal scenery. The man who designed them and the bridges, John Kelston, has also designed walkways used in Nigerian mangrove swamps – they apparently have a lot of snakes. The trail also contains access to remote sandy beaches, has a picnic area and even a campsite that has been reviewed by an ecologist and avid camper the band invited to come and try it out, then give them feedback. It took a crew of 13 people a year to build the Metlakatla Wilderness Trail. During that year they had to deal with everything from wildlife stealing their lunches to raising towers and suspension bridges during the middle of winter. The entire project has been completely accident free. The trail they made is only wide enough for people to walk along single file but is fairly flat and well put together. But according to Cory Stephens from the Metlakatla Band who has been overseeing the

project, the trail will cost about $50,000 a year to maintain which will likely mean year-round jobs for two village residents. They plan to come up with that money by selling tickets and season passes at a kiosk here in Prince Rupert in the near future. The pricing structure of this hasn’t been worked out yet, but the hope is that the trail will become a popular day-trip for both residents and tourists. The trail is just long enough that someone could come to Metlakatla on the eight a.m. ferry from Prince Rupert and finish it in time to catch the four p.m. ferry back. The trail will be open for the public in about three weeks, and the band is hoping to have guided tours available and information about the ecology and Metlakatla culture along the trail. The long-term vision for the trail is that it might be expanded so that it ran along the coast all the way north to Port Simpson, 25 kilometers away. This would make the trail a bigger tourist attraction and establish walking access between the two communities.

LIFE IN AN EXPLORATION CAMP A few weeks ago, Seabridge Gold opened its exploration camp at the company’s KSM Project, located 65 kilometres northwest of Stewart. The KSM camp is the base from which Seabridge conducts the seasonal onsite exploration, geotechnical, engineering and environmental work for its proposed gold, copper, silver and molybdenum mine. Seabridge has operated the camp for the past seven years; each year, the focus of the work is slightly different. This year, Seabridge is ¿nalizing its mine design plan and preparing to submit its environmental assessment and permit applications in November 2012, so camp and ¿eld activities are focused on supporting these objectives. Since mid-May, about 30 people have been living in camp. By the end of June, there will be approximately 50 people as different work projects ramp up. Most are employed by the technical experts and companies Seabridge has hired to help design and develop the proposed mine. “What I like most about my job is seeing new country and travelling to places few get to see.” – Tim Dodd, Geologist
If you’re a cook, you’re up at 4 a.m. getting breakfast ready for everyone. The rest of the camp residents are usually up by 6 a.m., with time to eat, pack a lunch and head out to catch the helicopter to work; many are back by 5 p.m., in time for supper. Tim Dodd is one of the project geologists working on the KSM Project. Project geologists typically work 12-hour days, with job duties that include core logging, drill hole spotting, in sampling core, visiting drill rigs, mapping s sa and a ¿eld work. “What I like most about my m job is seeing new country and travelling lin to places few get to see. I like the challenge and reward of deciphering the c geological puzzles of the earth that were g created over millions of years. And of c course I love working outdoors,” he co shares. s Life in camp can be tough so Seabridge makes the KSM camp as comfortable m as possible ibl by b providing things like internet access, satellite radio and phone booths. This means that when people aren’t working, they have the option of connecting with their families, catching up on their emails and paper work, or just heading into the common areas to watch movies or play cards or chess. “After a long day working outdoors, it’s good to be able to come back to camp to good food, the chance to see what’s going on in the outside world, or just to chill out in a comfortable environment,” Tim adds.
Already this year, the camp has been home to geologists, drillers, mechanics, pad builders, pilots, cooks, carpenters, labourers, environmental scientists and technicians. These men and women come from across BC to live and work on the KSM Project, sometimes for a few weeks at a time, from places like Dease Lake, Hazelton, New Aiyansh, Prince Rupert, Smithers, Telegraph Creek, Terrace and Vancouver. With so many people, each with different roles and responsibilities, it’s hard to describe a typical day in camp because it really does depend on what you do.

Marlins swimming season wraps up Submitted THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - The Kitimat Marlins Swim Club attended the last regional swim meet of the season in Terrace where teams from Prince Rupert, Terrace and Smithers were also in attendance. The Marlins were heavy on younger swimmers with many of the older Marlins not attending for various reasons. Even with this fact the Marlins were still able to manage placing second in overall points behind Prince Rupert with strong individual performances by many as well as relay wins in the 10 and under girls and 12 and under girls respectively. Many of the Marlin swimmers were using the racing as a last chance to tune up for the major swim meets coming up in late June and July. Kleanza Cathers (12) took the gold medal for overall points in the very competitive 1112 girls division. Her victory was one of the tightest in any age group at the meet, a one point difference over Avery Movald from Prince Rupert. Cathers will be competing at the Age Group Nationals and BC Summer Games in July. First year competitive swimmer Brander Pacheco (13) continues to impress and improve with a silver medal in overall points in the competitive 13-14 boys division as he prepares for his first AAA Provincials early July in Richmond. Zachary Dumas (12) took the bronze medal in the 11-12 boys category. Dumas continues to make large improvements after one season out of the sport. Racing his first ever 200 meter butterfly Dumas just missed his first AAA qualifying time by a mere one second. Dumas was 100 per cent best times

swim improvement for any Marlin at the meet and only five seconds off her first National qualifying time. Joining Zachary Dumas in achieving 100 per cent best times in all eight races was first year Emily Maag (11) and second year Hayden Dobbin(12).

KITIMAT - This weekend, drag racing goes back to where drag racing in the northwest began - The 4th Annual Kitimat Hill Climb. The race started in the late 1970s as a quarter mile, single run race featuring cars with colourful names like “The Rupert Elephant”, “The Wild Canadian”, “ The El Camino”, and “Lil Gobbler”. It then turned into a side by side 1/8th mile race in the ‘80s and ‘90s, featuring cars such as “The Predator”, “Foolish Delight”, ”Dr Demento” and the car this new race is dedicated to, Dave Saunders and his “Purple Pig”. After a hiatus of a few years, the race is now transformed into a 400-foot drag race up the Haisla Hill called “The Dave Saunders Memorial Hill Climb”. This new race still boasts features that the past hill climbs were noted for. Spectators sit on a grassy hill overlooking the race track, as cars run up and compete to be crowned The King of the Hill. Unlike other races, you can actually see the beginning and the end of the track all in front of you. Time trials will begin Saturday, June 30 at 10 a.m. with eliminations starting at one p.m.. Admission is free and the organizers are looking forward to introducing the sport to fresh faces and seeing some of their community favourites.
