SD5 lukewarm to new BC education plan Submitted BC’s education system has been in the spotlight this past school year with most of the focus placed on teacher bargaining. Receiving somewhat less attention was Minister of Education George

Abbott’s announcement of the BC Education Plan. The plan, according to Abbott, is “inspired by innovative change already taking place in BC communities” and focuses on ¿ve key elements, including personalized learning,

Àexibility and choice, and, learning powered by technology. SD5 Trustee Chris Johns con¿rmed the District is committed to reviewing the Plan and providing input back to government. “We took the initiative to host a community forum last month with students, parents, teachers and other education stakeholders,” said Johns who

facilitated the forum. “We understand that the Ministry is going to begin implementation of the plan in the fall, and we want to make sure our communities’ views are well represented.” According to Johns, the school community seems to be skeptical about the Plan. “The key issues that kept resurfacing during the forum were con-

cerns about the lack of adequate funding and supports for the existing system, a lack of focus on Aboriginal and special needs students, and the overall vagueness of the Plan.” Government is providing some funding for the 2013 school year to help school districts introduce elements of the BC Education Plan. Johns points out that while the Province will

be providing $20.00 per student for a total of $105,060.00 to SD5, this funding is not con¿rmed for future years. “We’ve seen these kinds of initiatives come and go, and you never know if it’s just dress up or the real deal,” said Johns. “I remain hopeful that the Ministry will provide the necessary funding to implement these concepts and to support

our students for the future.” A copy of SD5 feedback to government will be available for download on at sd5. bc.ca. For more information on the BC Education Plan please visit bcedplan.ca.

Rising waters at Wasa prompts Interior Health advisory Submitted

a slow rise in the wake of heavy rains earlier in the week. High water is creating potential risks to area wells and sewage disposal systems. Interior Health is advising residents and visitors to Wasa Lake to take steps to ensure their food and water are safe. Drinking Water Safety • For residents who are on a community water system: Questions about the quality of drinking water should be directed to the local water supplier (e.g. municipality, utility provider, etc.). These suppliers are best able to assess how their systems have been affected and whether there is any impact on the quality of drinking water. • For residents on private systems or individual wells that suspect their water supply

Recent heavy rainfall and increased snowmelt has caused Wasa Lake to rise, prompting the calling in of an automatic sandbagging unitas well as a forestry crew. “We have another 4000 sandbags on the way out and a 30-member Forestry Crew in the community today helping with Âżlling and placing sandbags,â€? says RDEK Information OfÂżcer, Loree Duczek. “We also have RDEK staff in the community today doing a broad assessment of how many properties are being affected by high water levels.â€? Including the shipment this morning, over 10,000 sandbags have been made available to Wasa residents and property owners over the past three days as water levels continue

has been affected or contaminated by the Àood: Water should be boiled or an alternative source of drinking water should be used until the water source can be assessed or tested. For information on having your private water source tested, please refer to the list of Provincial Health Of¿cer Approved Drinking Water Testing Laboratories: http://www.phsa.ca/ AgenciesAndServices/ Services/PHSA-Labs/ Testing-Requisitions/ Environmental/Enhanced-Water-QA/default.htm or check your telephone directory’s yellow pages under Laboratories – Analytical. Food Safety The following precautions should be taken when food has come into contact with Àoodwaters: • Food that has come into contact with Àood-

waters should be destroyed unless it has been packaged in waterproof containers that can be easily cleaned and sanitized. It is hard to make food that has been directly exposed to Àood waters safe to eat. Washing and sanitizing food cannot be done well enough in most cases. Normal cooking temperatures may not be enough to destroy disease causing bacteria and viruses if the food has been heavily contaminated. • Never eat or drink uncooked foods exposed to Àood waters, including raw foods you have tried to wash and sanitize. Perishable foods such as meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products should always be thrown out. • Strict sanitary actions must be followed when handling foods that have been exposed to Àood waters. Re-

member to wash your hands often. • If you have been cleaning up after a Àood, always wash your hands well before eating. If in doubt - Throw it out! • Canned goods should be thrown away if the seal is damaged, the can is bloated, or the contents show signs of seepage. Cans in good condition should only be opened after the label has been taken off and the can has been washed well in warm soapy water then put into a sanitizing mixture. A sanitizing mixture can be made by mixing 5 ounces (10 tablespoons) of 5 to 6 per cent household bleach to 1 gallon of water (40 mL of household bleach to 1 litre of water). Remember to clearly mark the contents on the can if it will not be used right

away after washing and sanitizing. • Previously opened bottled food and drink products should be thrown out because it is very hard to clean under the caps. Unopened bottles should be discarded if the contents show signs of seepage. • All contaminated utensils, dishes and food contact surfaces, such as cutting boards and counter tops should be washed with warm soapy water and then sanitized. • If you have had a power outage for more than four hours please refer to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s document - Food Safety in an Emergency at http://www.inspection.gc.ca. Septic Systems • Septic systems can be affected by Àood waters as water levels rise. You can minimize the impact by reducing

ICE trade Neibrandt to Vancouver

PHOTO DARCY WIEBE

Defenseman John Neibrandt.

Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced the club has traded 19-year-old Defenseman John Neibrandt to the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a ¿fth round pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. The ICE still have seven 20-year-old players eligible to return in 20122013, but don’t expect Max Reinhart (Calgary Flames) or Luke Paulsen (injury) to return for their overage season (Elgin Pearce, Dylen McKinlay, Drew Czerwonka, Brock Montgomery and Joey Leach are the other 1992 born players). “With us having seven 20-year-old players eligible to return

next year we knew we had to start reducing this number as soon as we could. There are numerous 1992 born players eligible to return for their overage season and we wanted to ensure that John had the opportunity to play his ¿nal season in the WHL. We would like to thank John for his two years with our Hockey Club and wish him all the best in Vancouver,”

added Chynoweth In other ICE news, the Club has selected 18-year-old Forward Petr Vesely (1st round, 29th overall) and 17-year-old For-

Wildhorse race results Recently, the Wildhorse Cycling Club held a fun race. The location was Eagerhills on Chewbacca Rocka and Waterpark trails. After the previous nights rain the trail was a little slick but made for some great riding. At 10 o’clock the racers started. The pace was extremely fast off the get go and continued through out the entire race. Hot on the adult’s back tires was the kids race. 17 kids took part in a 25-minute race on their own course to see how many laps they could complete. By all the ac-

Kootenay’s second selection (59th overall) was acquired from the Tri-City Americans for a 8th round pick in the 2013 WHL Bantam Draft. “It is very dif¿cult to draft any Import player as for the most part teams have not had the opportunity to watch these players over the course of the season, but we have received good reporters on both players. We are very thin at the forward position in the 1994 age group and are hoping these players, once they get acclimatized to the North American game will be key contributors to our team,” continued Chynoweth. Both Petr Vesely and Jakub Prochazka will arrive in Cranbrook in late August.

Life cancer program coming to the area by Sheila Tutty At the 10th annual Relay for Life on June 16, it was announced that the Inspire LIFE Program will be offered at Copper Point Resort on October 4 and 5. Anyone who has been there, knows the uncertainty and anxiety that comes with a cancer diagnosis. What happens now?… what should I do?… who can I talk to?… what are my options? InspireHealth, an integrative cancer care centre, based out of Vancouver, has helped over 6,000 British Columbians since it began in 1997. They are a world leader in integrative cancer care programs that optimize recovery and survival by combining healthful nutrition, exercise, methods for stress reduction, and emotional and immune support. And now the people of the Columbia Valley may be able to bene¿t from it, without having to travel to Vancouver. The Inspire LIFE Program has doctors travel to communities to deliver InspireHealth’s twoday program speci¿cally designed for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, along with their caregivers. If you feel uncertain or overwhelmed by your diagnosis, want guidance as to your options, want to take charge of your life and your health, want cutting-edge research on the latest development in integrative cancer care, and want to stay on the path of healing and recovery, then this program is made just for you. Topics include nutri-

tion, appropriate exercise, the importance of emotional and spiritual support, stress reduction techniques, shared learning groups and integrating complementary therapies. The two-day workshop is much more than an information session, it includes experimental and social learning exercises, provide hands-on tools, and helps to develop a local community of support. Whether you have just been diagnosed, are undergoing treatment, have just ¿nished treatment, want to prevent recurrence, or are just a family member, friend or caregiver and want to participate, it is open to all. I know of a number of people in the Columbia Valley that have travelled to Vancouver to take part in this two-day program, myself and my daughter included. To say it was life changing, is an understatement. Sue Engelbracht of Invermere attended the two-day workshop last year and says, “Taking the Inspire LIFE Program was the icing on the cake for me. I had incorporated several lifestyle and dietary changes that I felt supported my cancer treatment program, but it was Inspire LIFE that brought my beliefs and practises into a clear focus. Today I maintain an optimism that I am on the best path to healing and recovery, thanks to the Inspire LIFE philosophy of integrated cancer care. Donna Slobodzian of Fairmont was so inspired by InspireHealth, that she not only continues to go there as a patient, but also volunteers

at the centre. She says, “The B.C. Cancer Agency councillor suggested I contact InspireHealth upon my cancer diagnosis in 2009. It was very important to me that I received traditional medical care along with holistic and integrative care for my well-being. The doctors and support staff at InspireHealth gave me much needed hope and support. They taught me to become proactive and provided me with the necessary tools to implement each waking day. I wish I had this knowledge when I was much younger as the techniques have made a very positive change in my life along with my families lives.” For Connie Watson, InspireHealth was a lifeline. “Soon after getting the devastating news that I had breast cancer, my husband and I attended the Fireside Chat at InspireHealth where we learned about this wonderful program. “Because we have family in Vancouver I decided then that I would try to have my treatment in Vancouver and attend the LIFE Program during that time. The program inspired me to have the con¿dence to take an active role in my health care, which can be challenging where we live. “I believe the LIFE Program allowed me to travel this cancer road with faith that I would become healthier and committed to helping others learn about this wonderful program.” If you would like more information about InspireHealth, you can reach Sue Engelbracht at 250-342-6846; Donna Slobodzian via email at twinoakd@shaw.ca; Connie Watson at 250342-6688; or visit their website at www.InspireHealth.ca.

CANADIAN TIRE LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED

by Trent Brereton, ND

Weather-related pain and illness Migraine sufferers and people with joint problems like rheumatoid arthritis are often better predictors of stormy weather than the best weather forecaster. For some reason that is yet to be understood, some sensitive people are profoundly affected by temperature, barometric pressure, wind, moisture levels and, yes, even sunlight. Some researchers suspect the pain may be triggered by certain nerve fibers that respond to pressure, however this theory does not explain why some are so intolerant to sun or wind. For the vast majority who are not affected by weather this may seem an unusual reality. For those affected, it couldn't be more real. There is actually a medical term: "allodynia," that describes the phenomena of having pain be triggered by influences that are not normally painful. Another term, "geopathic stress" applies to normal weather and electromagnetic influences that can trigger pain and illness. If you cannot tolerate the sun (perhaps small doses of direct sunlight gives you blisters or headaches) you may have a

form of allodynia to a geopathic stressor: sunlight. For some the geopathic stressor might be wind, for others damp or dry weather, while some will feel terrible (headaches, fatigue etc) during periods of high or low barometric pressure. Being sensitive to geopathic stressors is frustrating as it is impossible to avoid weather. Having generally stable weather patterns is one reason the Southwest US is such a popular place to retire. Fortunately, if you are sensitive to weather or have allodynia from a geopathic stressor you don't have to move, as there are safe and effective treatment options. One can consider weather related illness as intolerance to certain pressure, temperature, moisture and wind patterns in the environment. Treating this intolerance is a relatively simple process using a low current stimulation of specific acupuncture points using a treatment called Bioelectric Intolerance Elimination. This approach normalizes the body response to the environment and is effective at reducing weather related symptoms.

ROSS’S POOLS & SPAS Commercial - Residential Installation-Maintenance-Repairs

building ~ buying ~ renovating

Take care of your home Whether you’re already a home owner or you’re thinking about becoming one very soon, buying a house is probably the biggest investment you’ll ever make. So it’s vital that this investment be protected in every possible way, firstly by maintaining it on a regular basis and secondly by carrying out renovations, whenever possible, to give it a new and fresher look. Home renovations contribute a great deal to the economy of this country. Indeed this sector equals or even exceeds construction of new homes in some years. Keeping up the maintenance of a house and carrying out high quality renovations offer many different advantages. A house which is looked after properly will retain or even increase in value. When the time comes to sell, owners don’t just recuperate their investment, but in a lot of cases they can also realize a certain

amount of profit. This increased value can, in turn, open the way to p u r c h a s i n g a larger, more luxurious house. But whether we decide to sell or to stay in the same home, a well-

maintained and renovated property will give the occupants a better quality of life. Perhaps it will have a more welcoming decor, a more efficient heating system, a more ergonomic kitchen, a more comfortable bathroom, a cosier bedroom…
