They’re coming — skeeter watch begins By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
Within the next 10 days, Cheryl Phippen will know whether her efforts to combat a rising hoard of post-flood mosquitos in the Thompson-Nicola Regional District have taken hold. After several weeks of heavy rains in the district that saw the South Thompson River rise to levels last seen in the 1999 flood, the owner of BWP Consulting Inc., which does the district’s mosquito-control work each year, is predicting a pest-heavy summer. “We have pretty much the same condition we did in 1999. Tons of water, lots of seepage in fields,” she said. Then, BWP treated all the larvae it could find, then waited to see if it would take effect.
New Patients Welcome
“Then, 10 days later, it just lit up with adults,” Phippen said. “I couldn’t get the calls off the answering machine. Everything was jammed. The TNRD lines were jammed. It was impossible.” This year, however, Phippen’s company has put down about triple the amount of larvacide used in 1999 and logged more than double the number of hours of helicopter time. Due to an early peak on the North Thompson — April 28, instead of mid-May — BWP has had to treat the riverbanks four times this year, instead of the usual two. “Now, we’re just waiting to see if it works,” she said. “We did our last aerial Wednesday [June 27] afternoon and we’re not really finding any more larvae anywhere, so now it’s just waiting to see how it went.”
Phippen said mosquitos tend to all show up at once. If they are coming, they’ll come en masse. But, even if the extra larvacide is effective, there will be more mosquitos in the air than usual, Phippen warned. “It’s not going to be a normal year for mosquitos. We’re going to have a worse year than normal. “But, how bad, we’re going to have to just wait.” She encouraged homeowners to do their part to fight the bugs as well. Standing water on top of pool covers needs to be pumped off or sprinkled with larvacide, she said. People should check eavestroughs for blockages and empty out water standing in containers around their yards, because “they are

literally teeming with larvae right now.” While regular, nuisance mosquitos will be out in force this summer, Phippen said the cold, rainy weather that has accompanied flooding isn’t good for the species that tends to carry West Nile Virus. The B.C. Centre for Disease Control began monitoring for West Nile two weeks ago and, so far, the virus hasn’t turned up. However, should the weather take a turn for the better, the West Nile carriers could be an issue later this summer. “If it starts to heat up there’s certainly a lot of water out there for that species to lay eggs in, but there’s no evidence of it yet,” Phippen said. For more information or to report a mosquito concern, call the TNRD mosquito-advisory line at 250-372-5700.

READ ALL ABOUT IT! Deadline Don — better known as KTW salesman Don Levasseur — spent his Canada Day at Riverside Park distributing a special Kamloops This Week product prepared to celebrate the city’s bicentennial this year. The 40-page broadsheet newspaper documents much of the history that has led to the Tournament Capital being what it is today. It includes stories and photos of many of the moments in the River City’s history, from what the first settlers saw as they arrived in the Thompson Valley to links with Nazi Germany and Gone with the Wind — and even a bit on why former U.S. president Dwight Eisenhower visited the city in the 1930s. You’ll find the special section with today’s paper. George Wycherley/KTW
Teachers vote to accept new deal With just over half the eligible teachers voting, the BC Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) has been approved a new contract. The two-day vote last week saw 21,044 teachers cast ballots with 75 per cent voting in favour of the deal. BCTF president Susan Lambert said “I doubt you could find a single teacher in B.C. who is happy with this agreement because it does absolutely nothing
to improve the situation in classrooms for students or teachers. “It doesn’t address class size and composition nor does it provide a fair and reasonable salary increase for our members, who have fallen behind teachers in other parts of Canada.” Lambert said the contract includes modest improvements to teachers’ benefits and in leave provisions. The contract, which expires in June,
2013, also includes improved benefits and seniority provisions but no wage increases. Lambert said she considered it an achievement to get the government to take concession demands off the table. The BCTF has taken the government to court challenging Bill 22, which forced an end to teachers’ job action and required mediation to resolve the contract dispute.

Telus invests $75 million Ground broken for new data centre on McGill Road By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
A DJ pumped out tunes and several of B.C.’s political heavyweights — including Premier Christy Clark — pumped hands as the long-anticipated Telus Data centre in Kamloops broke ground Frida, June 29. The $75-million data centre on former School District 73 land on McGill Road is expected to be up and running by this time next year. Telus president and CEO Darren Entwistle said the centre was designed to be “the most environmentally sustainable, secure and reliable facility of its kind in the entire world,” using 80 per cent less power than the a typical data centre its size. Entwistle said it would take “half the amount of energy used to run a toaster” to cool 1,500 servers in the building. Because of Kamloops’ low humidity, the building is designed to draw in outside air for cooling, which also reduces the amount of water needed for the process. He said he’s hoping the centre’s construction will lead to more technology companies considering Kamloops for their operations, a sentiment Mayor Peter Milobar echoed at the ceremony. “This is one more indication to the outside world that we are a viable tech hub,” he said. Building the data centre will create an estimated 200 construction jobs, and 75 permanent information technology jobs. “These are actually really cool jobs,” said Steve Jenkins, general manager for Telus in the Southern Interior. “These are going to be highly sought-after- These will be skilled roles, so with that they’re going to take top market dollars.” Jenkins said the centre — the twin of another facility set to open in Quebec this fall — will be built in seven modules and will be 215,000 square feet once complete. The company also handed out a number of donations at the ceremony, including $425,000 for the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation, which Jenkins said will go towards the building of intensive care and isolation units. However, it was the Kamloops parks department that picked up the oddest prize of the day. Entwistle announced the company would donate the tent and boardwalk constructed for the event to the city, for use at other announcements.

Protesters disrupt Ajax meeting STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
Of the more than 40 protestors who converged on a public workshop held by KGHM Ajax on June 28, only one made it into the conference room to hear the mine proponent’s progress report on the environmental-assessment process. The rest lingered inside the doors of the Thompson Rivers University Campus Activity Centre, or outside on the steps, offering a cheerful chorus of “good evening” to two RCMP officers called to the scene by Ajax staff. “We had a gentleman come in who was not registered and we asked him to leave and he said, ‘No, go ahead, call the police. So we did’,” said Norman Thompson, community-relations manager for KGHM Ajax. The man was allowed to stay, as were other protestors in and around the building. Before departing, an RCMP officer told the crowd Ajax staff had promised to hold more meetings on the copper and gold mine
“It’s because we’re workingclass.” Both expect more anti-Ajax protests as the mine’s application process continues. Thompson said registration is required for workshops because the meeting room Ajax is using only holds 120 people. Since the session wasn’t full, Thompson said, more people would have been let in under normal circumstances. “But, with protestors there, they were changing the rules on us last night and we said, ‘No, if you’re not registered, you’re not coming in’,” he said. • Meanwhile, KGHM has announced it will keep Herbert Wirth as chief executive officer of the Polish company. Shares in the mining venture — which trades on the TSX Venture exchange under AME (Abacus Mineral and Exploration) were trading at 21 cents entering the Canada Day long weekend. Share prices have a 52-week high of 32 cents and a 52-week low of 14 cents.

proposed for south of Aberdeen, “if they have enough people to register.” However, many of the protestors said they objected to being required to hand over personal information in order to learn more about the mine. “This is supposedly a ‘public’ workshop, except you are only allowed in if you forfeit your personal information to the company,” wrote Nathan Leduc on a Facebook event page set up for the protest. Others, like Ann-Marie Hunter — who stood outside the building with a cardboard ‘Stop Ajax’ sign — attended past meetings and weren’t impressed. “I don’t know what they could say that would make me feel any differently,” she said, adding she plans to move if the mine is built. Her friend, Maureen Kerr, said the city is being “discriminated against. “If this was planned outside of Kelowna, Vancouver or Victoria, it would never be allowed to go ahead,” she said.

Liquor-warehouse staff set to strike By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com
Workers at the Kamloops Liquor Distribution Branch are set to strike today (July 3), as part of a 24-hour work stoppage at three warehouses the B.C. government hopes to privatize. Members of the B.C. Government Employees Union will set up pickets at the Dallas Drive site between 5:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. Only one government liquor store — which shares space with the Vancouver warehouse — is expected to be affected by the strike. Beyond that, the union’s chief negotiator David Vipond said he’s not expecting much disruption to the alcohol trade. “I’ve heard some radio programs where they’ve having contests — what are you going to stock up on? There
might be a run on some of the liquor stores,” he said. “It may actually improve sales over the long weekend.” The union has been negotiating with the province since the beginning of the year and spent two weeks in unsuccessful mediation. Its contract expired at the end of March At issue, Vipon said, are wage increases and the plan to privatize the liquor-distribution system announced in the last budget. The union has asked for a 3.5 per cent pay increase the first year and cost of living increase in the second. The province has offered a two per cent increase this year and 1.5 per cent the second, with no retroactive pay. “That’s insufficient to keep up with inflation,” Vipon said. “We don’t want to sign two skinny deals in a row. We did a very

skinny one last time, zero and zero wage increases, and that’s enough.” The union believes there’s “no business case” for selling off the warehouses and liquor distribution system. Premier Christy Clark disagrees. “Why should government be in the business of driving trucks around and delivering liquor? It’s something the private sector can do just as well,” she said, though she added the province won’t sell the system if it can’t get a decent price. A request for proposals on the privatization closed over the weekend. Clark said the government has been “really fair” to the union. “We’ve said, look, we want to try and allow you to find some savings within the system that you can devote to add to your collective agreement,” she said.

Walmart just a permit away from growing Retailer will add 14,000 square feet in project that will expand its grocery operation as many as 40 new jobs and generate as much as $60,000 in new property taxes paid to the city each year. Last year, the City of Kamloops received $800,000 in property taxes from Walmart. The renovation will include the demolition and reconstruction of Walmart’s tire and lube centre at the store’s northwest corner in order to make room for additional square footage. As a condition of the covenant being removed, the retailer agreed to spend $15,000 on a bus shelter and, at its own cost, install a new pedestrian pathway from the shelter to the sidewalk in front of the Michael’s store adjacent to Walmart. While Barclay said the construction permit will likely be issued in the coming weeks, there is no indication when the project will begin. Walmart refused to comment on a timeline. Renovations to turn a Kamloops big-box store into a bigger-box store could begin next month. Officials at the City of Kamloops are looking over Walmart’s application for expansion — a $5-million construction project expected to add more than 14,000 square feet to the current 130,000-square-foot footprint of its Hillside Drive outlet. “We’re just in the review process,” Bruce Barclay, the city’s commercial building inspector, told KTW. “Hopefully, in the next couple weeks we can get that [permit] out to them and they can get started on construction.” The retailer plans to increase the size of its grocery operations to 20,000 square feet — including produce, fresh meat and a bakery. At a public hearing in February — at which a covenant on the Walmart property was lifted to allow renovations — city council was told the expansion will create

Royal Avenue fire not considered suspicious By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER

Fire investigators looking into an earlymorning blaze in North Kamloops think they found their point of origin — and there’s nothing suspicious
about it. “We’re trying to determine right now just how suspicious this fire was,” said Dan Funk, Kamloops Fire Rescue inspector. Funk said the blaze began adjacent to a shed near a house in
the 400-block of Royal Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 28. “It actually started in the greenhouse,” he said. “There was a [electrical] receptacle found in the area of origin.”

An office and auxiliary constable on duty during the annual event tried to calm the men’s behaviour but were unsuccessful, with one man grabbing his identification documents from the officer and swearing at him. The man was arrested for causing a disturbance and being drunk in a public place. While one officer was preparing to handcuff him, the man waved his fists at the two officers, pushed the constable and tried to flee. Additional officers arrived at the scene and the fleeing suspect was tackled and pepper-sprayed.
The other two men were arrested for causing a disturbance. Police said no one was injured during the altercation. The three were detailed at the police station until sober.
Crash closes highway A westbound car travelling in the eastbound lane collided with a second car on Hwy. 1 at Comazzetto Road, on Sunday, July 1, resulting in closure of both eastbound lanes at 8 a.m. for two hours. The driver of the eastbound car was taken to Royal Inland Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the westbound vehicle was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention.
and flavours from around the world.
Firefighters were able to keep the majority of the destruction limited to the shed, but a nearby pickup truck was also damaged. Funk said fire crews will likely remain onscene into this afternoon.

Do we celebrate July 4 in Canada? Of course we do . . .
O
UR NEIGHBOURS TO the south in the Excited States of America will celebrate their 236th birthday tomorrow, as Wednesday, July 4, will see fireworks light up across the country. My eldest brother works for a sales-training company that has staff in Dallas, Tex., arrange his conferences in Canada. He received an email from one of those staffers, asking whether Canada celebrates July 4 as she did not want to book him on the holiday. Does Canada celebrate July 4? Does Canada celebrate America’s birthday? Yes, she realized soon enough she had asked a silly question, but I did my best to temper her embarrassment with a quick reply on behalf of my brother, filled with the red-and-white patriotism that was in ample display this past weekend in Riverside Park: Yes, we certainly do celebrate July 4 in Canada. We celebrate all that has helped make Canada the premier country in North America (which is why God placed it on top). We celebrate the Lachine Riot of July 4, 1812, which led to the union of French-Canadians with English Loyalists to defend our great land from the imperialistic heathen from the United States. We celebrate Sir Phineas Riall, who so valiantly defended Canada in the Battle of Chippawa on July 5, 1814 and who, on Dec. 30, 1813, marched through western New York,
CHRISTOPHER FOULDS Newsroom
MUSINGS destroying Buffalo in the process. That’s why the Buffalo Bills today play such disastrous football. We celebrate Sir Isaac Brock, who was Canada’s Buster Douglas to America’s Mike Tyson. We celebrate Laura Secord, not for her chocolates, but for her stealth and determination in warning our forces of the damn Yankees coming, thereby securing a critical victory during the Battle of Beaver Dams on June 24, 1813. Her chocolate ain’t bad, either. We celebrate the Aug. 24, 1814, burning of the White House and U.S. Capitol, a symbolic act that served to convince all that Canada belongs to Canadians. That the burnings were supervised by the ethically superior MajorGeneral Robert Ross (who ordered his troops to not touch private buildings) and that the invasion was only the second time ever that foreign troops captured Washington makes the victory all the more impressive. We celebrate on July 4. Of course we do.
And, not just to pay our respects to our victory over the United States in the war that gave us our independence. We celebrate three-down football, the way God intended it to be played. And all the marvellous things invented in Canada . . . Like five-pin bowling. And vinegar on French fires. And colour, not color. And basketball. And hockey. And lacrosse. And Pablum. And newsprint. And Trivial Pursuit. And the CPR dummy. And the Fuller brush. And instant mashed potatoes. And the prosthetic hand. And the garbage bag. And the zipper. And the electric streetcar. And the electric wheelchair. And the electric light bulb. And the electric organ. And the Mcintosh apple. And the pacemaker, And Alex Trebek — who these days may be thanking his native country for the heart invention. Yes, we celebrate July 4. We celebrate all this and more. But, we do it on July 1 due to the exchange rate. God bless Canada. editor@kamloopsthisweek.com twitter.com/ChrisJFoulds chrisfoulds.blogspot.com
These are tough times and tough times demand that tough decisions be made. Money is scarce and your provincial government is tasked with determining where every cent will be spent. Some programs will be cut, much to the chagrin of many, but that is why we elected people who we trust have their priorities in order. So, it must give the great unwashed much comfort to learn that its elected representatives have come to the esteemed conclusion that it is far more important to give senior staff at Community Living B.C. bonuses that were supposed to be scrapped than to maintain funding for Science World’s wonderful touring program that brought the magic of science to kids throughout B.C. It must give the great unwashed much comfort to learn that its elected representatives are wise enough to realize keeping a bloated public-relations staff, along with the $130,000 salary paid to former TV news reader Pamela Martin for setting up meetings, is money better spent than being wasted on guiding children into science-based careers that can truly change the world. Yes, Christy Clark’s B.C. Liberal government has decided to withdraw its $1-million grant that helped Science World being the world of science to children far from Vancouver. Seven months ago, Clark spoke of how important the Science World program was: “It’s important we support Science World and their programs that foster the pursuit of science in our children and throughout the community, so we have bright young people to fill those jobs when they become available.” A year ago this month, Moira Stilwell, then-parliamentary secretary for industry, research and innovation, said: “Getting young people excited about sciences and technology is not a task that ends because the Year of Science is over,” “This legacy funding will ensure that we continue to educate our young people about the tremendous opportunities that the sciences provide . . .” With such dubious decisions, is there really any surprise the B.C. Liberals are on a path to oblivion?

TALK BACK
SURVEY RESULTS
City council ignores common sense, health info Editor: Even though letters from concerned residents to city council, speaking in favour of the pesticide ban, were double those against; Even though substantial material from the medical field had been submitted, including some from upstanding organizations such as the Canadian Cancer Society, the David Suzuki Foundation and
the Ontario College of Family Physicians; Even though this same city council professes to care about people’s health by wishing to make smoking bylaws even stronger than they already are and trying to use ‘health’ as an excuse to prevent certain businesses from locating here; Even though they use the term ‘green
city’ while talking about the environment, encouragubf the use of bicycles, discouraging the use of cars, all in the name of ‘health’; A proposed pesticide ban was turned down by five of our council members, including our mayor. I cannot express the utter disappointment I’m feeling. It’s a sad time for all of Kamloops when our
elected representatives decide to ignore very serious health matters that affect all of us. While governments allow things to fall through the cracks, giving false impressions of safety, it’s our medical professionals who are dealing with the aftermath. Pesticides are poisons. They make people ill. I’d like to thank
councillors Donovan Cavers, Tina Lange Arjun Singh and Nancy Bepple for understanding the health concerns of the people of Kamloops and for putting safety and environmental concerns above all else. It will speak volumes in the next election. Diane Czyzewski Kamloops
Canadian Cancer Society advocates cosmetic-pesticide ban Editor: In May, the B.C. Special Committee on Cosmetic Pesticides released its report, which contained 17 recommendations to the government. Although these recommendations did not include an outright ban on lawn and garden pesticides, it’s important to note the B.C. government has not made a decision (and the special committee itself did not have consensus in arriving at these recommendations). It’s also noteworthy that, of the 7,300 e-questionnaires submitted by British Columbians during the committee’s e-consultation, almost 5,000 supported a ban on the sale and use of cosmetic pesticides. The Canadian Cancer Society maintains
health should take precedence over lawns. It’s important to note pesticide registration by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) of Health Canada does not mean a pesticide is safe or without risk. When the PMRA registers a pesticide, it means risk to human health and the environment is minimized — but not eliminated — if the product is used for its intended purpose and according to label directions. In its assessments, the PMRA does not differentiate between cosmetic use and non-cosmetic use. While a definitive cause and effect relationship between pesticides and cancer has not been established, the Canadian Cancer Society is very concerned about the growing
body of evidence suggesting pesticides may increase the risk of several types of cancers, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, prostate, kidney and lung cancers. Prohibiting the use of cosmetic pesticides is both responsible and respectful of the state of the scientific evidence. We thank the 40 municipalities throughout B.C. who have shown leadership by adopting cosmetic pesticide bylaws — and we hope British Columbia municipalities will continue to adopt cosmetic-pesticide bylaws. Student loan-payment rules eased By Tom Fletcher BLACK PRESS
tfletcher@blackpress.ca
The B.C. and federal governments have relaxed some of the rules for student-loan repayment, part of an integrated-loan program that came into effect on July 1. The new repayment-assistance plan allows for smaller payments for lower-income students, based on income, number of dependent children and the amount of student debt owed. The program extends the repayment time and may allow forgiveness of the original loan amount.
A single parent with two children and an average annual income of $30,000 would see the minimum interest payment on a $20,000 student loan decrease from $228 to zero. A student couple with two children, combined income of $50,000 and combined loans totalling $40,000 would see their minimum payments fall from $485 to $87. Premier Christy Clark said the new repayment rules will expand the number of B.C. students eligible for relief to 20,000, replacing strict income-based limits for loan repayment that didn’t reflect
loan size or number of dependents. “It’s going to be a really big benefit for people who might find themselves $1,000 over the eligibility line,” Clark said. “Just because you’re $1,000 better off in your gross income doesn’t mean it’s going to be a whole lot easier to pay everything back.” The new repayment plan also provides for forgiveness of some or all of the loan principal if students have dependents and their income stays low over time. Students with a permanent disability
can qualify for full loan forgiveness if they still can’t afford the full loan payment after 10 years. B.C. student loans given out before Aug. 1, 2011 are automatically moved to the new national student loan system effective July 1. Loan recipients are supposed to receive a new agreement with the terms of the integrated loan. People with B.C. student loans in default can qualify for the integrated-loan program by making at least six monthly loan payments in a row on their defaulted loan or repaying it in full.
Reforestation plan needed, experts say By Tom Fletcher BLACK PRESS
tfletcher@blackpress.ca
One-million hectares of B.C. forest land may need to be replanted to help them recover from widespread fire and bark beetle problems, according to a new report from the B.C. government’s Forest Practices Board. The report estimates the entire area that may need replanting at twomillion hectares, out of the 95-million hectares of total forest land in B.C. But, about 500,000 hectares of that is the legal responsibility of the forest companies that logged it and the government has plans in place to replant another 250,000 hectares. “Decisions about whether to replant areas where mountain pine beetle and fires have killed most of the trees will have an impact on the future timber supply,” board chairman Al Gorley said. “At a minimum, if nature is left to take its course, the eventual crop of timber in those
areas will be delayed.” The board, an independent watchdog of the B.C. government, is critical of the way the government defines “not satisfactorily restocked” forest land. The definition only applies to areas designated for timber harvest. Even within this 22-million-hectare timber-supply area, there are large areas affected by fire or pests, but the report notes the ministry’s survey data on these areas are not sufficient to be certain of tree survival or recovery. The ministry has announced regulatory changes to promote salvage of wood waste for producing wood pellets and other “bioproducts.” The regulations are aimed at providing access to smaller trees, tops and branches that are piled at logging sites and roads when sawlogs are taken out. They authorize new salvage licences that do not allow the harvest of standing trees.

Plenty to do when the snow melts at Sun Peaks When the snow melts and the grass begins to green, a different side of Sun Peaks Resort wakes up to play. The resort is a wellknown winter destination — but its evergrowing array of kids’ and family summer activities and events has people looking at it in a different light. Get the kids excited to expand their skills with the many camps and clinics this summer at Sun Peaks. For the little golfers, there is the three-day junior-golf camp or the kids program every Sunday for two hours. If they would rather bike, sign up for the five-day Freeride Downhill Biking Camp, coached by some of B.C.’s top riders, or take Introduction to the Bike Park, a two-hour clinic offered daily. Learn to explore
the cross-country trials with a introductionary clinic or a guided cross-country bike tour. Art Zone Workshops feature a different local artist and are held on many weekends throughout the summer. Sun Peaks Resort is more than just a room with a view. Visitors have a chance to create experiences that can’t be replicated anywhere else. There are many opportunities to strike out and discover an adventure as a family. Ride the Sunburst chairlift and take an easy alpine hike through a field of wildflowers or grab a map and explore the expanded cross-country biking trails while viewing local wildlife. Whether the kids feel like relaxing by the pool or expending some of their extra energy on the bungee
trampoline, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone satisfied. A short ride away is Heffley Lake, where more summer fun awaits an adventurous family. It’s a quintessential B.C. lake, surrounded on all sides by towering pines. It’s also the perfect place to try stand-up paddle boarding or take a ride in a traditional voyageur canoe. Sun Peaks also has many opportunities for families to enjoy festivals, live music, great food and many other outdoor events. This summer, it has continued to expand its summer programming and will host events every weekend. These range from concerts and performances to arts and culture venues to sports, camps and clinics, including several new
events unique to the resort. The largest new event is the free outdoor concert, featuring Kevin Costner and Modern West. Sun Peaks is expecting thousands of people from across Western Canada to listen to the folk-rock sounds of Modern West, including its newly released concept album, Famous for Killing Each Other. But, that is far from the end of what Sun Peaks has to offer. Families can immerse themselves in local history and culture on horseback during the Tod Mountain Heritage Ride on July 15 or discover a new favourite wine at the Wine and Culture Festival, July 6 to July 8, on a midmountain restaurant surrounded by towering pine trees. With more than 30 events this summer, whether you are into sports and adventure or arts and culture, there is the perfect event. Sun Peaks Resort is always looking for ways to offer expanded value and new experiences for their guests. This summer, it has introduced free golf for children staying at Sun Peaks Resort. This means quality time with the family on Canada’s highest Alpine golf course. Sun Peaks Resort Golf Course recently enjoyed one of its best opening weekends in recent memory and is in fantastic condition. Take the opportunity to enjoy these and other experiences awaiting you at Sun Peaks this summer.

Cougar crashes party Barbecue in Westsyde draws big cat’s attention By Michael Potestio STAFF REPORTER
reporter@kamloopsthisweek.com
A cougar sighting in Westsyde has conservation officers cautioning residents to keep an eye on their children and pet cats. The cougar was spotted outside the home of Clinton and Dawna Schadlich on Pine Springs Road on Thursday, June 28, at about 9 p.m. The Schadliches were having a yearend barbecue in their backyard with the kids and parents of their two daughters’ peewee softball team. About 20 people were at the barbecue. Ten of the teammates were jumping and playing on a trampoline when one of the parents spotted the cat. It was watching the girls from the bushes, about 10 to 15 feet away, according to Clinton Schadlich. Conservation officer Steve Wasylik responded to the call and said the parents got the kids away from the trampoline. The cougar lingered in the area and was last seen heading up into the hills behind the house. Schadlich said he snapped some photos of the cat, which looked at him and

He said Wasylik was on the scene by about 9:30 p.m. and checked out the area, but it was dark and the cougar was nowhere to be seen. The cat hung around for about an hour, said Schadlich, and became a conversation piece of the party. “We’ve lived here for 13 years and I’m an outdoor enthusiast and I’ve never seen a cougar out in the wild like that,” said Schadlich. Wasylik said it was a bit unusual to see a cougar in that area of

New Gold in production First ore mined processed last week New Gold Inc. has started production at its New Afton Mine, with the first ore having been processed through the mill circuit on Thursday, June 28. The production start met the company’s original timeline. Since the first ore was placed in the mill circuit, the mill has been running on a continuous basis, with progressively more ore being added to the circuit. The company anticipates that, over the course of the coming weeks, the daily milling rate will continue to increase. New Gold’s target for commercial production at New Afton, defined as 30 days of operation at 60 per cent of capacity, or 6,600 tonnes per day, remains August. In addition to the recent mill-production start, New Afton’s underground mining operations, which began in the fourth quarter of 2011,

continue to perform well, the company reported. The daily mining rate and the growth in the surface ore stockpile are all tracking at or ahead of targeted levels. “After a tremendous amount of hard work on the part of the entire team at New Afton, we are very excited that production has now started,” said Rbert Gallagher, company president and CEO. “We are proud to be in a position to deliver this project on schedule, and to see it become the fourth operating mine in our portfolio. “New Afton is an important part of the history of our company and we look forward to this mine becoming our mostsignificant cash-flow generator.” New Afton’s total development cost remains approximately $765 million. The total development cost is net of revenue from gold and copper sales between the start of production and the beginning of commercial pro-
duction in August. New Afton is forecast to produce between 35,000 and 45,000 ounces of gold and between 30-million and 35-million pounds of copper at total cash cost of between $1,200 and $1,300 per ounce in 2012. New Afton’s production forecast includes gold and copper produced between mill start-up and commercial production. The revenue from the pre-commercial production will be offset against capital costs. New Afton gold and copper sales for 2012 from commercial production forward are expected to be 20,000 to 30,000 ounces of gold and 20-million to 25-million pounds of copper, respectively. Over its estimated 12-year mine life, New Afton is expected to produce an average of 85,000-ounces of gold and 75-million pounds of copper.

The Kamloops-Thompson Valley region is making a case for being the mountain-biking capital of Canada. Hoodoos, rugged canyons, logging roads, sliders, ramps and kilometres of trails for recreational riding provide ample terrain for both adventure mountain bikers as well as the casual, leisure riders. Kamloops is the birthplace of freeriding and has been attracting mountain bikers for years. With the diverse, easy-to-access topography, Kamloops has it all. There is desert-like terrain, single-track courses and highspeed alpine trails. Away from the city, mountain bikers will want to check out Stake Lake, Inks Lake, Bush Lake and Greenstone Mountain. Closer to town, here are few places to ride:
Kenna Cartwright Park This 800-hectare park offers an extensive network of nature trails for cycling, with panoramic views of the city, the Thompson Valley, Kamloops Lake and the convergence of the North and South Thompson rivers. Directions: Take the Trans-Canada Highway to Exit 366 north. Head west along Hillside Drive to the main entrance.
Directions: Take Tranquille Road past the Kamloops Airport and Kamloops Golf and Country Club. Enter the Lac Du Bois Grasslands Provincial Park on Tranquille, pass Criss Creek Road and left onto Frederick Road. This road is about eight kilometres long and ends at Kamloops Lake, but you are looking for a parking area just 300 metres to the right on Frederick Road.
This park hosts tournaments and plans to form tour linkages with other celebrated mountain biking areas, like Sun Peaks Resort. Directions: Take Valleyview Drive in east Kamloops (parallel to Highway 1) and turn onto Highland Road. Kamloops Bike Park is located behind the Valleyview Arena.
Lac Le Jeune Trail This is a 25-kilometre stretch from Lac Le Jeune Provincial Park to Ross Moore Lake and back. Directions: The ride begins at Lac Le Jeune Provincial Park, 37 kilometres south of Kamloops off the Coquihalla Highway.
Sun Peaks Resort This trail is rated one of the five best mountain-biking parks in North America. Riding downhill is a challenge, with 24 liftaccessed trails to ride from the top of the Sunburst lift. Directions: Travel north on Highway 5 for 19 kilometres and turn right at the sign to Sun Peaks. From there to the village is 31 kilometres.

Directions to Inks Lake: Take Exit 355 on the Coquihalla Highway, 10 minutes from Kamloops, or take Lac Le Jeune Road.
In Kamloops, people can take a water-rafting trip suited to their interests — extreme, casual or novice. Take a motorized-raft trip or enjoy a paddle trip and really get involved with the river. It depends on how much excitement someone wants. There are three rivers to raft in Kamloops Country — the Thompson, Adams and Clearwater. A variety of companies, some with 20 years or more experience, spend six months a year guiding rafters of all skill levels.
Thompson River Those who want to experience the Thompson usually start at Spences Bridge and end at Lytton, the Rafting Capital of Canada. Guide your raft through rapids with names like the Frog, the Devil’s Kitchen and the Jaws of Death.

Stake Lake and Inks Lake Located 25 minutes south of Kamloops, these 45 kilometres of marked trails are great for family rides. Inks Lake is also a popular riding area with locals and visitors and is suitable for more-experienced riders. Directions to Stake Lake: Take Exit 366 from Highway 1/ Highway 5 in Kamloops and follow Lac Le Jeune Road south. Park near Stake Lake. Trails are to your right.
Adams River
Located on the north shore of Kamloops Lake, these trails run through rippling grasslands.

The Adams, near Shuswap Lake, is a wonderful starting point for both first-timers and experienced rafters. The Weir, the Ender Waves and especially the Gorge, where the river spills through a narrow canyon, are breathtaking.
Clearwater River Rush down the Clearwater in Wells Gray Park, past volcanoes, lava rock formations, lush forests and spectacular waterfalls. The region is an unspoiled wilderness and is one of the bestkept secrets in B.C.

Woman suing SPCA after house searched
SALE STARTS WEDNESDAY!
s l a i c e p S
By Tim Petruk STAFF REPORTER
tim@kamloopsthisweek.com
A Knutsford woman implicated in an alleged puppy-mill operation last year, but never criminally charged, is suing the BCSPCA for “unlawfully searching her home. In documents filed in B.C. Supreme Court in Kamloops last week, Donna Barker claims two SPCA constables “acted in bad faith when they searched her house and seized two puppies last November. It was alleged at the time a Lower Mainland man drove to Knutsford to buy a Great Dane puppy from Barker after seeing an online ad on Nov. 6, 2011. He filed a complaint with the SPCA after returning home, describing the conditions as filthy and mentioning an injury on his dog. He said Carol Haughton, on bail for animalcruelty charges at the time, was present during the sale and listed herself as owner on purchasing documents. The allegations led to an arrest warrant issued for Haughton, but charges were never laid against Barker. In Barker’s statement of claim, the SPCA’s search of her home is described as “invasive. She also claims the search warrant was obtained “unlawfully. Barker is seeking general damages, punitive damages and compensation for pain and suffering and legal costs. She’s also looking for an order barring SPCA constables from entering her home. The BCSPCA has yet to file a response. None of Barker’s allegations have been proven in court.

Council wants to hear downtown parking ideas Kamloops city council is putting out a call for developers and business owners to pitch ways to improve parking in the city’s core. Council agreed to begin an expression of interest process recommended by the Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association, part of a package of parking
suggestions the group brought to council on June 26. The rest of the suggestions, which include replacing parking meters with pay stations like those used in Kelowna (at an estimated cost of $1 million), will be examined in more detail at a special council workshop later this summer.

Mustang Boss 302 – it’s all about the V8
L
ET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE! There’s nothing quite like the sound of a North American V8— and it can be found in its purist form in the 2013 JIM ROBINSON Ford Mustang Boss First 302. Using a proper igni- DRIVE tion key, not one of these start buttons, the 5.0-litre engine hesitates for a millisecond then bursts into life with a grunt, followed by a hollow sounding blat, before settling down to an oh-sosweet fruity burble at idle. And, this is all before the fun begins. This car is not for boulevardiers — you can get that with a Mustang GT coupe or convertible. The throwback rou-ball shifter is a quick throw to the first gear upper left. The shifter for all six forward gears is small, almost dainty, like that in a Mazda Miata. But, start to let out the clutch and you can feel 380 pound-feet of torque flowing through the clutch as it bites in to the pressure plate. The next decision is a big one. Do you motor off sedately with a deep, low revving rumble or do you floor it and alert everyone within a block that this ain’t no econobox? Actually, they will probably already know because the Boss 302 comes in a palate of eyegrabbing colours like the day-glo green tester featured this week. The colours aren’t some kind of whim, but a real part of the Boss 302 legacy — and that includes the “hockey stick” graphics which date back to the Parnelli Jones’ 1970 Trans-Am championship car. The reflective stripes on the Boss come to life when lights hit them, similar to how they did in 1970 on the Mustang Boss 302. The new stripe follows the classic hockey stick motif by going over the fender and extending down the body panel. The front end, especially the louvered hood, is more powerful in appearance augmented by a more aggressive grille. Those louvers are functional, extracting heat from the engine bay. The front splitter is bigger and the Boss 302 features signature lighting with standard HID headlamps and LED-surround taillamps. The heart of the Boss 302 is its 5.0-litre V8 engine with four cams and variable-valve timing. In the standard 5.0-litre Mustang, it produces 400 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. The Boss 302 enhances that with a large airintake box over the engine with thick inlet runners to improve breathing that raises output to 444 horsepower. The Boss 302 uses carbon-fibre plates in the
limited-slip rear axle. The suspension on the Mustang GT is already pretty beefy, but the Boss gets higher rate coil springs at all four corners, five-way adjustable shocks and thicker stabilizer cars — plus, the body is lowered 11 millimetres at the front and one millimetre at the rear, The rear disc brakes of the Mustang GT are retained at the rear but the fronts are replaced for four-piston Brembo calipers acting on 14-inch rotors. That’s capped off by 255/40ZR-19 Pirelli P-Zero tires at the front and 285/35ZR-19 at the rear. While it is quite tractable around town, dancing on the clutch and gas pedals in downtown traffic is to be avoided as it can become tiresome on the calves. X See BOSS A25

But, this is a modern Mustang and that means buyers can take advantage of the SYNC connectivity system, which is standard on Mustang. While the capless filler doesn’t mention it, Ford recommends premium fuel. Transport Canada lists fuel consumption at 13.6L/100 km city and 7.8L/100 km highway. I didn’t come close to those numbers and didn’t expect to. One of the options ($1,900) was the Torsen limited-slip rear differential which, of all things, includes Recaro sport seats with the Boss 302 logo embossed on the head rests. Heading upcountry to where a car like this can still be fully enjoyed, the Boss and I covered a bunch of miles over every kind of surface you can think of, including urban and rural roads. The radio was never turned on, the sound of the throaty exhaust going up and down through the gears, that little snap of late burning gas on the down shift — it was all the music I needed. On one 166.4-kilometre run, it used 20.2 litres of gasoline for an average of 17.3L/100 km. I did get it down to 14.2L/100 km at one point but ruined it all on a lonely, long

Lift Off to THIS WEEK London

Kamloops is home base to some of the best athletes in the world. Five of them — Dylan Armstrong, Justin Rodhe, Sultana Frizell, Kibwe Johnson and Catharine Pendrel — are heading to the Summer Olympic Games, which run from July 27 to Aug. 12 in London. PacificSport Interior BC and the Kamloops Track and Field Club held a sendoff party for the athletes at the Tournament Capital Centre on Monday, July 2. KTW was in attendance — check out the photos and turn to page A28 for the story. Sultana Frizell (left), Justin Rodhe, Dylan Armstrong, Kibwe Johnson and Anatoliy Bondarchuk listen as South Kamloops secondary graduate Tessa Bantock sings the Canadian anthem at the TCC, where a crowd of about 50 gathered to watch the ceremony. Frizell and Johnson are hammer throwers, Armstrong and Rodhe are shot putters and Bondarchuk is their coach. All but Johnson, an American, will represent the Great White North in London.
Rodhe (left), Frizell and Johnson kept the mood light at the press conference. Rodhe, born in Ohio, became a Canadian citizen last November. He was cleared in May by the International Association of Athletics Federations to compete for Canada at the Olympics. He has trained under Bondarchuk at the National Throws Centre in Kamloops for about four years.
The always-entertaining Bondarchuk (left) — who won gold in hammer throw at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich — shared a few stories with the media before the athletes stepped outside to greet their well-wishers.
Kamloops-North Thompson Liberal MLA Terry Lake and Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo Conservative MP Cathy McLeod donned Canadian colours and provided encouragement for the Kamloops-based athletes and support staff heading to London.
This was the scene outside the Tournament Capital Centre. The athletes were accompanied by the sound of the bagpipes as they walked through the building’s front doors.
Pendrel would love nothing more than to medal in mountain biking at the Games. Bruce Davidson, pictured in the background, is a Kamloops-based doctor who will serve on Canada’s core medical team at the Olympics. Steve Seibel of Kamloops will serve as a basketball official at the Games.
Photos by Marty Hastings/KTW Darren Finch, daughter Sarah, 5, and son Nathan, 8, were among those who wished the local athletes well. Nathan and Sarah were shy at first, but the flags were out in full force by the time the athletes addressed the crowd.

New stars sprinkled through all-star game
C
ASUAL BASEBALL FANS MAY BE IN FOR a surprise when they study the rosters of the American and National League teams for the mid-season classic this year scheduled for July 10 at Kansas City. Oh, the usual, familiar names will be around — Josh Hamilton, Jose Bautista, Derek Jeter — thanks to fan voting, which is weighted heavily on popularity and name familiarity rather than merit. So, when names like Trout, Trumbo, McCutcheon and Castro show up, don’t be surprised. There is a constant changing of the guard in the majors and this year is no different. So, who is Trout? He’s Mike Trout, a great hitter with the Los Angeles Angels whose offensive exploits this year were partially overshadowed by the non-hitting woes of Albert Pujols, the $256-million free-agent signee who barely hit his weight through the first two months of the season. Trout played 20 games in AAA Salt Lake City and batted
BRUCE PENTON From PRESS ROW .403 before being called up to the Bigs. In his first 50 games, he had seven homers and a batting average of .344. Trumbo is Trout’s team-mate, Mark Trumbo. Remember the M and M Boys of the Yankees in the 1960s (Mantle and Maris)? This Angels’ T and T duo (TNT is the obvious nickname for the pair) might be just as explosive. A second-year third-baseman, Trumbo belted 18 homers in his first 65 games this season and had a slugging percent of .610, trailing only Hamilton and ‘Big Papi’ David Ortiz in that category. McCutcheon is Andrew McCutcheon of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who haven’t had a winning record since 1991.
A centrefielder and the epitome of a fivetool player (hits for average, for power, has speed, a strong arm and great fielder), McCutcheon’s name surfaces when fans start talking about the best player in the game today. And the Pirates? They’re over .500, thanks in large part to McCutcheon’s heroics. Castro? He’s Starlin Castro of the Cubs and he’s a slick-fielding shortstop who plays for a lousy team. Somebody has to represent the Cubs in the Mid-Summer Classic, so he’s likely to be their representative. Tune in to the allstar game broadcast and you’ll certainly see the familiar names. It won’t take long for the newcomers to become household names, too. • Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe. com: “Ryan Leaf said at his sentencing ‘I’m lazy, selfish and dishonest.’ Was he talking about why he should be sent to prison, or announcing a future run for Congress?” • Greg Cote of the Miami Herald: “Major league umpires are now
wearing military-style cooling packs under their heavy gear to combat the heat. Fans responded by saying they’d prefer the umpires suffer.” • Another one from Cote: “The Panthers picked 23rd in the NHL draft, which is generally considered to be the largest gathering of white teenagers outside of an Eminem concert.” • Steve Simmons of Sunmedia, on Twitter: “First reason to worry about Leaf draft pick Matt Finn: His favourite player growing up was Bryan McCabe.” • Twitter:@ Dave_Stubbs “With a $687,500 contract, #Habs Ryan White will only have $687,500 left after budgeting for his haircuts.” • R.J. Currie of sportsdeke.com: “White Sox slugger Adam Dunn is on pace for 260 strikeouts in one season. Which would beat the old record of striking out 223 times, set when I was dating.” • Currie again: “Word out of Winnipeg is the Bombers’ new stadium won’t be completed this season. Same goes for most of Buck Pierce’s passes.” • TNT’s Charles Barkley, explaining all
the anti-LeBron James sentiment: “Everybody hates the homecoming queen because she’s pretty. All the ugly girls hate the homecoming queen. And all the dumb kids hate the smart kids. That’s just the way it is.” • English track coach Charles van Commenee, not worried about teen sprinter Adam Gemili competing in the Olympics: “It’s not like I am sending my 12-year-old niece to fight al-Qaida.” • Another one from Currie: “The Toronto Blue Jays pitching in brief: Right-handed, left-handed and shorthanded.” • Ex-closer Eddie Guardado, when
conditions; a torrential downpour, bad food and virtually no dental care.” • Rick Ball, B.C. Lions radio broadcaster, when smoke obscured the uprights in Edmonton during a point-after attempt: “It’s like the back of Cheech and Chong’s van.” • Ben Burnett: “Toronto signed 49-year-old left-hander Jamie Moyer to a minor league contract, according to a report on the team’s website. “His fastball sounds great if you convert to metric.”
told in 2008 that the Twins had traded him for Rangers pitching prospect Mark Hamburger: “What? I was traded for a hamburger?” • Brad Dickson of the Omaha (Neb.) World-Herald, on college football’s proposed four-team playoff: “Details still have to be worked out, including how to make sure that Boise State finishes fifth every year.” • Comedy writer Alex Kaseberg: “At the Olympic Trials, Ashton Eaton set a world record in the decathlon, 9,039 points despite competing in a torrential downpour. CHOOL MAY be out for summer — but some students are still cracking the books. “It really gets me to read,” nine-year-old Natasha Schwartz said with a laugh as she talked with KTW about the summer reading club at the North Kamloops Library. She was checking out books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Sisters Club and Pure Dead Magic as potentials for the first week. She said those books reflect the types of stories she enjoys — funny and sometimes spooky. “Because I kind of like, sometimes creepy stuff. That’s why I’m taking out Pure Dead Magic,” she said. Andy Finnen, head of the children’s branch at the library, said the reading club — now more than 25 years old — is important because it aims to instill a love of reading in children. She said it’s also beneficial in ensuring children have no rust on their reading skills when they head back to school in September. Natasha’s mother, Catherine Schwartz, said she supports the program as it helps the children transition back into their reading and school work. That’s a factor she

said will be beneficial for her daughter as she makes the leap from third to fourth grade. “Next year is going to be a lot more work and less playing when they get back to school,” she said. The transition is supposedly a lot harder than with earlier grades and the reading club will help her daughter adjust to the workload, she said.
The club’s theme this year is Strange . . . But True and the club is being held at both public libraries. It runs from July 3 to Aug. 25 and children ages six to 12 can register anytime throughout the summer, said Finnen. Finnen said 346 children have signed up at the North Kamloops library and more than 300 at the downtown branch.
Throughout the summer, participants will fill out logs with the titles they have read and are instructed to read at least 15 minutes a day she said. After reading for a week, they come in to the library and collect a sticker. Upon completion of their logs over the course of seven weeks, they are eligible to enter into a draw for the grand prize,
a Nintendo 3D-S. There are also weekly themed contests and activities the kids can take part in, one of which will see plenty of ghosts and goblins roaming around the library this summer. “In August, we’re having Halloween,” said Finnen. “So strange — but true.” There will also be a pizza party at the library
on Aug. 25. This year’s theme features a story which the reading log is based on. Illustrated by graphic novelist Mike Deas, it’s a story about a Sasquatch who discovers a book on humans he shares with his alien buddies and a horse dressed as a unicorn. They discover children reading in a treehouse and make contact

through the love of reading, said Finnen. There is also a Readto-me Club for children up to age five who don’t know how to read yet. They submit a log of books which have been read to them. Charles “Wayne” Edlund
February 27, 1941 – June 12, 2012 Wayne was born on the family homestead in Blaeberry, near Golden, BC to Charles and Violet Edlund. He will be forever missed by his loving wife Gail. Wayne leaves to cherish his memory three sisters: Delores Frederick, Golden; Christina Garrett, Christina Lake and Tammi Moore, Calgary, AB; two brothers Ron Graham, Port Alberni and Ed Coupland, Golden. Wayne also leaves behind a son Rodrick, granddaughter Kayla and grandson Dallas all of Edmonton, AB. Wayne attended Lady Grey School in Golden, BC and then worked briefly in the logging industry around BC. In 1959 he enlisted in the army with the Queen’s Own Rifles Regiment and was stationed in Calgary, AB. Following the army, he took vocational training in Nanaimo, BC to become a pipeline welder. Wayne’s work as a professional welder and portable welding contractor for over thirty years took him across Canada, north to the Yukon and Northwest Territories and south to the Caribbean. In 1992, Wayne “retired” to build a ranch in the Sullivan Valley north of Kamloops, along with Gail, and raised Hereford cattle for the next eighteen years. Wayne’s cow herd and the champion bulls he purchased from recognized BC breeders were a source of great pride and joy to him. A faithful cow dog was always at his side to help out. He enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, hunting, camping and spending time with family and good friends. Wayne’s Swedish heritage was especially important to him. After researching and writing the Edlund family history in 1997, Wayne and Gail traveled to Sweden to meet and get to know family there. Wayne was one of the best – compassionate, honest and loyal. He worked hard and excelled in meeting any of life’s challenges. A Celebration of Wayne’s life will be held Saturday, July 7, 2012 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the ranch. Please call Gail for more information. Many thanks to all who have given us so much love and support over the past year. We couldn’t have done it without you. Should friends so desire donations may be made to the TB Vets, 1410 Kootenay Street, Vancouver, BC V5K 4R1; phone 1-888-874-5626. Condolences may be expressed at www.schoenings.com
McGrandles Elizabeth “Lena”
Sadly, Lena passed away suddenly at home in Kamloops on 23rd June 2012. She is survived by her loving family 3 daughters, Patricia of California, Gemma (Ron) & Theresa (Ian) of Kamloops and a son Michael of Windsor Ontario. Nana as she was fondly known to her 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren will be sorely missed. A sister, Theresa McVeigh of Scotland and special friend Andrew Clark share in our sorrow. She was predeceased by loving husband, John McGrandles. Lena was born in Glasgow, Scotland and lived in Windsor, Ontario from 1969 to 1990. She had a multifaceted career in Scotland which varied from being a Bookkeeper in an office to being a Conductress “On the Buses”. In Canada she worked at Windsor Raceway after which she retired to beautiful BC. Lena’s faith was very important to her and her deep spirituality helped through the difficult times. Lena enjoyed her family and travelling to Scotland, Italy, USA, Mexico, Hawaii and cruising. She danced her way through a rewarding and fulfilling life. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday 5th July at 11:00 a.m. in Sacred Heart Cathedral, 360 Nicola Street. Should friends desire, donations may be made to the CNIB or the Catholic Woman’s League in memory of Mrs. Elizabeth McGrandles. Condolences may be expressed at www.schoenings.com Arrangements entrusted to Schoening Funeral Service, 250.374.1454
One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two set of footprints in the sand: one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. “Lord, you said that once I decided to followed you, you’d walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times of life, there is only one set of footprints. I don’t understand why, when I needed you most, you would leave me.” The Lord replied, “My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”
