Teachers Rain fails to dampen Canada Day spirit accept new contract BY BREANNE MASSEY Times Staff
BY TIMOTHY SCHAFER Times Staff
Rolling one over in the West Kootenay has different connotations than it does across the province. But the deal accepted by 40,000 public school teachers on Friday on a new contract to end a year-long labour dispute has been classified as a “rollover” of the contract teachers held from 2006-2011. Kootenay Columbia Teachers Union president Andy Davidoff said in a recent interview with the Castlegar News that the key of the deal—accepted by 75 per cent of voting members on Friday—was to not impose a contract. It also meant the two sides will start bargaining again in a month on issues such as post to fill, lay-off and recall provisions, and professional growth, he said. “If we can’t agree on those things then the status quo prevails,” he told News reporter Craig Lindsay. “Then what we do is start bargaining again in eight months. But it avoids the legislated agreement, the harsh fines and further punitive legislation—and that’s important.” The two-year contract—one of which included a work-to-rule campaign—includes improved benefits and seniority provisions but no wage increases, negotiated under a provincial government policy that said any wage increases must be offset by concessions elsewhere in the contract. The dispute largely focused on wages, with teachers initially asking for a 15 per cent pay increase, although there were other issues such as class size and class composition. The B.C. Public School Employers’ Association will hold a vote for trustees next week on final ratification on the deal. The instability of the last year may not be a thing of the past, however, with the new contract set to expire in June of next year, just a month after a provincial election. But a ‘yes’ vote means disruptions from the last school year— teachers refusing to perform certain administrative tasks such as filling out report cards—likely won’t affect students when classes resume in the fall. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation recommended teachers vote in favour of the contract, but the union complained it only agreed to the deal because the province would have otherwise legislated a new contract. — with files from The Canadian Press
Greater Trail has been burdened by heavy precipitation lately but the forecast wasn’t foul enough to dampen Canada’s 145th birthday. Over 200 people came out to Beaver Creek Park for the annual Canada Day event hosted by the Trail Kiwanis Club. Families throughout the entire community were lured out to the event because of the sudden change in weather—for once this summer it was sunny. People celebrated by dancing—in groups and pairs—to classics, like Neil Diamond, a tribute paid forward by local performers North of 60. While people applauded the group’s outstanding performance, many families took advantage of the activities planned for children. The Trail Parks and Recreation had several volunteers offering free face painting. In addition, volunteers handed out goody bags to families. Some kids only took breaks from the plethora of activities only long enough to enjoy the barbecue and a piece of cake. “We almost ran out of hotdogs,” Kiwanis barbecue volunteers reported. “But we

The Lower Columbia All First Nation (LCAFN) group expressed concerns about the possibility of damaging drum-skins in the rain, and used the opportunity to mingle with locals. “We couldn’t perform today, but I thought we should come out and show our support for the area,” explained LCAFN volunteer Terrie Miller while handing out headbands to children. The LCAFN group expects to appear in many other West Kootenay events throughout the summer. Unfortunately, the event came to an early close, around 1:30 p.m. However, the celebration got its usual sendoff with the fireworks performance from the Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Department at dusk in Gyro Park.

Goodwin is required to now review the matter and, under the Community Charter, direct the dispute to binding arbitration. “(I will) consider if the dispute should be directed to mediation or another nonbinding resolution process,” she said in a letter to Trail council June 5.
Goodwin will be concluding her review and be in a position to provide direction on the next steps in the process in mid June. Trail city council had notified the province in late May it wanted to engage in the process of arbitration with the City of Rossland to determine the correct percentages of shared costs for sewage service in the Greater Trail region. For four years the question of who pays
what portion of the cost of sewer service among Trail, Rossland and Warfield has been booted around like a political football. Trail currently pays close to 70 per cent of the regional budget following a formula created in the late 1960s, based mostly on population and projected growth. In early April Rossland council dismissed an eleventhhour attempt from Trail to avoid arbitra-

Trail council had drafted a cost sharing proposal based on population, though it previously agreed with a mediator report that suggested the old formula was unfair, and a new formula should be based on 50 per cent population and 50 per cent water consumption. The legal price for the process is expected to outweigh the cost difference quoted in the proposal—around $20,000.

The bidding: West, with 13 high card points and five hearts, opens one heart. East, with support and six to nine points, makes a simple raise. West passes so he has no desire to invite. He has 12 to 14 points. If North passes, the auction will end. Therefore, he is in the balancing seat. The opponents have from 18 to 23 points, so on average, he and his partner will have 21 points. Therefore, North doubles. This is a balancing takeout double that shows no extra values and only a desire to push the opponents to the three level. North is counting on South to have points because the opponents made no attempt at game and have shown a fit. South bids two spades and the auction passes out. The contract: Two Spades by South

Declarers loses the queen to the king and West plays diamonds. Declarer will draw trump and ruff a heart and play a club to the ten forcing the ace. Cafe looks for permanent status BY TIMOTHY SCHAFER Times Staff
Huckleberry’s Café is looking to go permanent. The popular restaurant at 8195 Old Waneta Road will be taking its bid to a public forum as it endeavours to move from a temporary commercial use permit for its establishment to a service commercial C7C, allowing the eating establishment to continue on the site. For the last four years the restaurant—operated by Carole Dasti—has used the property owned by Bill Garnett, alongside Columbia Valley greenhouses. However, since the property was zoned service commercial (C7)—and eating establishments are not listed as a permitted use—the café had been able to operate under a temporary commercial use permit (TCUP). A TCUP is issued for three years and may be renewed only once. And since the TCUP for Huckleberry’s was renewed in 2010, a rezoning of the property was required to allow the operation to continue. But the change could impact the residents of the neighbourhood. The proposed change could allow the café to extend its hours past the 9 p.m. restriction in place with the TCUP. As well, the availability of parking to serve the greenhouse and the café are limited during peak season, “creating a nuisance for the residential properties nearby,” read a city staff report to council. Council opted to pursue a zoning amendment, rather than a full zoning bylaw amendment, to allow the café to continue. A public hearing on the zoning amendment will be scheduled for Monday, July 16 at 6 p.m. in city council chambers.

A&W owners eyeing late August opening BY BREANNE MASSEY Times Staff
Replacing the roof on the former Dairy Queen building is only one of the changes people can expect to see this summer. Shirley Henderson and Blaine Cantalope confirmed that the rumours about converting the vacant lot into an A&W are true. The couple recently purchased the vacant lot from the Ferraro family. “We’re ripping it apart and we’re slow-

Much has been made of WestJet’s proposed inauguration of regional service across the country, and the West Kootenay’s keen interest in being included. A local contingent including mayors Lawrence Chernoff (Castlegar), John Dooley (Nelson), City of Castlegar CAO John Malcolm and former Conservative MP Jim Gouk were part of a recent effort to plead the West Kootenay case in Calgary. The local spiel was sweetened by an offer of more than $300,000 by the City of Castlegar. The money would go toward navigational software which would allow WestJet turboprop aircraft to make a lower and more efficient approach to the West Kootenay Regional Airport than what is considered safe practice with current flights. Communities from across the country had a chance to impress WestJet officials. Media specialist Robert Palmer suggested late 2012 or early 2013 as a time when the results of WestJet’s decisions would be made.
ly putting it back together right now,” said Cantalope. “We were hoping for a late August opening, but we don’t know for sure.” Currently the owners expect renovations to alter the look of the building, but they deemed the transition worthwhile because of its prominent location within the community. “Location is like 90 per cent of the success of a restaurant,” Cantalope explained. “Basically we’re going to put a new façade
on the outside, a new roof and change the layout of the interior so it’s like ripping it down to the outside walls and starting over.” Cantalope is new to the fast food industry, but his wife (who operates the Castlegar A&W franchise) has been a veteran in the service industry for years. “As soon as we open, I’ll have been in the industry for a day,” he said. “But my wife has been doing it in Castlegar since ‘94—she built that one.”

Village offers home to entice doctors THE CANADIAN PRESS NAKUSP, B.C. - The threat of a closed emergency room and fierce competition for doctors has led the village of Nakusp to buy a house so a physician facing 10 job offers can live there with his family. The idea came from the Arrow Lakes Hospital Auxiliary and the local hospital foundation after a resident left them an undisclosed amount of money in a will. “We thought if we were to offer housing it might help attract a doctor to our community and it did help,” said Ulli Mueller, foundation direc-
tor and member of the housing committee that formed a corporation to buy the fourbedroom house for $280,000. The community partially furnished a bedroom, dining room and living room so the young couple doesn’t have to move everything in until they have decided to stay. The doctor is just finishing his residency in Golden and was set to move into the home last weekend. The international medical graduate had 10 communities vying for his attention, said Dr. Norm Lea, the lone fulltime physician who is the chief
of medical staff at the Arrow Lakes Hospital. Lea said the new doctor is “awfully impressed with Nakusp” and committed to working there for two years. “We’ve been trying really hard over the past few years to get some more permanent physicians in here and it’s been really tough,” said Nakusp Mayor Karen Hamling, who is also a director on the West Kootenay-Boundary Regional Hospital District board. “We’ve come close to shutting our emergency room because of a lack of staff,” she said. “Dr. Lea has cancelled

It’s a matter of life and death.”

PROVINCIAL COWICHAN VALLEY
Flood threat eases Province fires school board THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER - Flooding in British Columbia continues to ease as the weather co-operates. Environment Canada said conditions are about two to three degrees cooler than normal and that’s helped the situation across the province. David Wray of Environment Canada said a low pressure system will keep temperatures cooler for the next few days over the central coast and then the interior. The system is also expect to bring around 10 millimetres of rain with it. The Lower Fraser River is still receding and expected to keep lowering, said David Campbell from the B.C. River Forecast Centre. “The mission gage dropped from 6.2 metres yesterday to 6.17 metres today, Campbell said in a statement, pointing out that the river will continue
to drop. Campbell said lake and river levels were high in the Shuswap Lake area and Thompson River system. He added moderate rainfall has helped keep rivers in a holding pattern in some areas. Meanwhile the B.C. government and the Red Cross are still assessing flood-ravaged structures in Sicamous. An evacuation order was lifted for the Two Mile subdivision in Sicamous and residents have returned under an evacuation alert. Emergency Management B.C. head Chris Duffy said an assistance centre has been set up to provide residents with information on issues such as engineering concerns and ways to prevent mould in their homes. On the Upper Fraser River ferry service at Big Bar ferry and the Lytton ferry remains suspended as water levels are too high to safely operate.

Minister appoints trustee after board failed to adopt balanced budget THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER A school board in Cowichan Valley has been expelled after not passing a balanced budget. The province’s education minister, George Abbott, fired the board for district 79 after it failed to produce balanced figures by Saturday’s deadline, instead opting to pass a restorative budget with a $3.77 million shortfall. The board passed the budget five votes to four as part of what some members said is an aim to bring the district’s funding back up to pre-2001 levels. It is only the fourth time in 40 years a school board has been fired by the province, and the second time one in Cowichan Valley has been axed following a similar situation in 1985. Abbott has appointed Surrey School District superintendent Mike McKay as the official trustee for the district
until the next election in 2014, praising him as a respected 30-year veteran of the education system. McKay once worked as a school principal in Cowichan Valley and is now tasked with working alongside district staff to set a budget. According to the School Act, if a balanced budget is not passed by the board of trustees, funding from the province cannot be transferred to the district. Trustee Ryan Bruce voted against the deficit budget and said those who voted in favour of it are playing politics with the education system. “I guess the split or the difference in opinion comes around those that want to send a message to government and those of us that want to work constructively to find solutions and continue to be a voice for education in the valley, he said. Bruce contends the district has about 2,000
fewer students than it did ten years ago and a funding increase of about $2,000 per student.
“That political stand is clearly at odds with the school act and that brings us to their dismissal. GEORGE ABBOTT
He said while he’s disappointed to have been removed, he supports Abbott’s decision. “His hands are tied, I think we have submitted a deficit budget therefore money cannot flow, if money does not flow then next September there’s no money to run the education system in the valley, he said. “He’s really got no choice but to remove us and appoint somebody who will follow the law, follow the school act and submit a balanced budget. But Board of Education Chair Eden Haythornwaite said funding levels are still

Haythornwaite said the budget passed was initially set up to ensure the district would have money to operate as usual, then 20 restorative measures were worked in. She said her decision was political, and that’s not a bad thing. “I don’t see any contradiction between working hard for our children and using my position as a politician to do that, she said. “I don’t know what else I would do, I think wishing upon a star would hardly qualify. During a conference call, Abbott said the board is politically motivated, but stopped short of accusing it of working on behalf of a particular political group. “That political stand is clearly at odds with the school act and that brings us to their dismissal today, said Abbott. The B.C. Government and Service Employees Union workers are set to walk off the job at the Vancouver main distribution warehouse for 24 hours beginning 11:30 on Monday night. The Victoria wholesale customer centre and the Kamloops distribution warehouse will be picketed for shorter periods. But Finance Minister Kevin Falcon warned Friday that if workers take strike action, the government’s “generous offer is off the table and subsequent offers likely won’t be as lucrative for the union representing 27,000 people. The only retail liquor store affected by the strike action Tuesday is the one at the main distribution branch in Vancouver, and the union said all other government liquor stores will remain open.

Thousands attend Canada Day events THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA Thousands of people covered Parliament Hill in red and white on Sunday for Canada’s 145th birthday. But the passionate patriotism of Canada Days’ past was replaced by a smaller crowd seemingly subdued by the history lesson on the War of 1812, which formed the main theme of the celebrations. Necks craned skyward for the traditional flypast of the Snowbirds and then all eyes turned to the performances of Roch Voisine, Feist and Simple Plan. Their show drew the crowd out of its midday stupor, with teenage girls shrieking and singing as Montreal-based Simple Plan rocked on. Even Governor General David Johnston joined the party, waving his hands from side to side in time with the music. “It is a little known fact that many of the founders of this country were great music lovers and even in the 1860s, Canadians loved a good party, Johnston said in his speech. Johnston praised Canadians as hard workers, for their families, communities and country. “Having travelled across this country and visited thousands of Canadians in their communities, I know how hard you work,
he said. “I also know that regardless of age or affiliation, all Canadians want to create a better future for this country. Almost the second biggest cheer of the day was for the prime minister, who, as the events drew to a close, was prompted by the crowd chanting his name to do an aboutface and shake a few more hands. “It was pretty cool, said Laura Selby-Maley, 23, who was marking her fourth Canada Day 5)& ,005&/":n4 05& &/":n4 0/-:

MONTREAL Montreal police are investigating whether remains found in a city park are linked to alleged killer Luka Rocco Magnotta. A police source tells the Associated Press the remains appear to be a human head. Magnotta is accused of the murder and dismemberment of Concordia University student Jun Lin. He has pleaded not guilty and has opted for a trial in front of a jury. Lin’s torso was discovered stuffed in a suitcase behind Magnotta’s apartment building in late May. His hands and feet were mailed to political parties in Ottawa and two B.C. schools. His head has still not been found. Montreal Police spokeswoman Anie Lemieux says tests will be run on the remains to determine if they are in fact body parts and whether they’re related to the Magnotta case. “For the time being it is still too early to confirm anything, Lemieux said. Montreal’s Major Crime Squad cordoned off parts of the Angrignon Park in the city’s west end after the
discovery was made following a tip on Sunday. Magnotta, 29, is accused of the firstdegree murder of Lin, along with defiling his corpse. He is also charged with harassing Prime
Minister Stephen Harper and MPs, and publishing and mailing obscene material. He was arrested in Germany after an international manhunt ended with his capture at a Berlin Internet cafe.

Rough seas ahead for BC Ferries
B
C Ferries has begun its summer schedule, ramping up sailings for the vacation season that is crucial to the fleet’s bottom line. It’s been rough sailing for BC Ferries so far this year. The corporation released its financial results in June, reporting a net loss of $16.5 million, compared to net earnings of $3.8 million the previous year. Last year’s earnings were boosted by the sale of the former corporate headquarters for $9.3 million, preventing a loss there as well. In the fiscal year that ended March 31, vehicle traffic was down 3.5 per cent and walk-on passengers were down 2.8 per cent. As a result, BC Ferries is forecasting a “small loss” for this year as well. The spring “Coast Saver” sale has just ended. That’s a 37-per-cent discount offered Fridays
through Mondays, May 25 to June 25 on the major runs from the mainland to Victoria and Nanaimo. The discounts allowed a foot passenger to cross for $9.95 and a car and driver for $39.95. I asked BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan last week how the sale went. He didn’t have final figures yet, but he allowed that the boost in traffic was “marginal.” It’s the second year that the spring sale has been offered over weekends, when people are more likely to travel. But instead of generating additional trips, Corrigan said the main effect has been to shift traffic from midweek to weekends. One of the primary reasons for this spring’s poor performance is the lousy weather that kept people at home. Gasoline at $1.40 a litre is another big one. Hotels and other tourism services tell the same story.
TOM
FLETCHER B.C. Views Here’s another problem: student traffic on the ferries was down by a third this spring, because teachers cancelled field trips as part of their lengthy workto-rule campaign. The simplistic political debate about ferry service starts and ends with rising fares, with occasional fits of temper over executive salaries, and ignores the other factors. Just cut the fares and increase the taxpayer subsidy, say the NDP and their local echo chambers. Of course, taxpayers
are already pitching in an extra $80 million this year, bringing the subsidy to the ferries close to $200 million. That’s how Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom sweetened the pot as he unveiled new powers for B.C. Ferry Commissioner Gord Macatee to set service levels as well as regulate fares. Macatee’s task now is to travel the coast and endure the demands of island dwellers who want the rest of us to subsidize their splendid isolation. The proposition for them will boil down to this: You can pay more or you can have fewer sailings. And where the boat is a third full, you will have fewer sailings. This consultation period is an opportunity to ask some hard questions. For instance, does Saltspring Island really need three ferry terminals?
And why is there no passenger-only service? Macatee’s term as commissioner started with a detailed review last year that pointed to some other ways to save serious money. But CEO Corrigan says there are no quick fixes. FortisBC has offered an $11 million incentive for conversion of marine vessels to natural gas, which would give the fleet significant relief from spiraling fuel costs. But a ferry conversion would take six months or more, and another vessel would be needed in the meantime. Another promising suggestion is overhauling the ferry reservation service, making reservations free and charging extra for those who just show up. Corrigan says a computer reservation overhaul is underway, but it will take three years. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press

Power in the hands of power companies In this day and age of modern conveniences , one topic that remains in the best interest of people, is the impact that our population is having on the earth. Conservation of our resources for our future is foremost in our minds. I may be stepping out there to say that often, the only way that we can make people conserve, is through their wallet. When you have to pay for something, you are less likely to dispose of it so easily. I am sure that I, as a individual, play my part in the conservation of our water and power, especially when you know the impact dams have on our rivers. Water and power are important to people and go hand in hand. We are so dependent on them that we can’t survive without either of them. Look what happens when the power goes out. Everything comes to a halt. We have definitely come to rely on power in our everyday lives. Could you imagine what it would look like today if everyone relied on wood heat again? It seems so archaic. I remember when we were given incentives by our power
company, to change over to electric furnaces because they were 100 per cent efficient, clean, basically maintenance free, with absolutely no toxins being spilled out into the atmosphere. Electricity is also a renewable resource which means that we will not need to cut down all of our trees to be used as a heat source. Natural gas at one point was scarce, and again, not a renewable resource, but now more natural gas sources have been found and in a large supply. This brings me to my point. Fortis has purchased both the electric and the gas divisions of our power and have become the only power monster with no competition what so ever. So they have set out new rules which means that you, as the consumer, will pay more per KiloWatt than the next guy, if you use more than their set amount. It has become a tiered system. Basically what they are saying is that if you have to heat your home electrically in any way (furnace or baseboard), you will pay more per KiloWatt than your neighbour who may have a natural gas heating system but may also use more electric-
ity through lighting, appliance usage etc. simply because you have an electric heat source. Some residences do not have gas lines because of their locations. Some people are afraid of gas in their homes because potential leaking is an issue, so converting to natural gas is not an option, therefore you are being penalized for that. I believe Fortis is using money as their way of forcing people to convert to natural gas. I don’t mind paying for my usage, but to be penalized because I have an electric furnace? I believe this is a form of discrimination against those of us who either choose to use electric heat or have no other option. I guess that is the type of high-handed service we get when we let the big power companies get bigger. Recently, I had been phoned by Fortis, to inquire as to what I thought of their services. Because there are respectable people out there that may be reading this note, I can’t tell you how that went. I don’t think they will want my opinion again. Brent Laface Trail

Or lose our government’s right to protect local hiring, set rules that protect us or the environment or prevent farmers from going out of business? Any trade agreement should be fair to Canadians and be based on basic human rights, the rule of our Canadian laws, fair labour practices and environmental safety. I belong to the “Progressive” side and believe that government has a role to play in fostering a fair and just society for all. It is possible to work for and with our businesses, our workforce and our communities to create a prosperous future for our children and future generations. Holmes files for divorce from Cruise THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are calling it quits after five years of marriage. “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” Holmes’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe said Friday. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.” Cruise’s lawyer Bert Fields said Holmes filed for divorce on Thursday. Cruise, 49, wed the 33-year-old Holmes in 2006 in an Italian castle after publicly declaring his love on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” emphatically jumping on her couch. The couple has a 6-year-old daughter, Suri, who has herself become a staple of the tabloids and celebrity magazines. Their plan to divorce was first reported by People magazine.
JOAN HODGINS
Makeup artist has dressed up famous faces THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA, Ont. Little do the MPs know it, but the delicate hand powdering their noses and brushing their eyebrows before CBC political panels also primped the likes of Richard Burton, Prince Charles and David Niven. British-born makeup artist Joan Hodgins, 84, has spent nearly two decades working for political shows at the network in Ottawa. Hers has been the calm seat before the hot one for hundreds of politicians, diplomats and talking heads. She has just retired after doing CBC anchor Peter Mansbridge’s makeup for the Canada Day show. Before Hodgins came to Canada, she had the kind of career that could be fodder for an HBO or BBC miniseries. She was from a village near Oxford, but moved to Cardiff, Wales, as a young mother in 1961. She learned makeup through a brief stint at an Avon-type company, and later got a gig working for TWW, a station serving all of Wales and western England. Programs on the telly then were still in black and white. “You had to think in shades of grey and know what foundation
or lip colour registered from white to black.” The station was a beehive of activity, with all forms of variety and performing arts programs, including operas and period plays. She learned old-school tricks of the trade, like the proper application of a fake moustache, sideburns and beard - layered on strip by strip rather than in one piece. She poofed up wigs, and glued the gauze netting underneath them to the faces of the actors. “Then colour came out and everyone went crazy. The designers made some awful sets ... red and orange!” Later, TWW’s licence was taken over by Harlech Television or HTV. Actors such as Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Stanley Baker were shareholders. David Niven and Ian Holm also came through the studios on different projects. Hodgins recalls the day Burton and Taylor arrived for a special show in 1968. Taylor was wearing the 33.19carat Krupp diamond he had given her. The couple were living up to their tempestuous reputation. “Everyone smoked in those days, and

Makeup artist Joan Hodgins talks with CBC host Evan Solomon as she does his makeup before the taping of a show in Ottawa Thursday. Richard Burton just took the cigarette out of his mouth and dropped it on the floor and said, ‘Elizabeth, step on that.”’ Hodgins, back then the head of makeup in a crisp white uniform, got to apply makeup to Burton. “Usually the most famous people don’t have as much ego as the ones on the way up,” Hodgins said. “I made up some American star, whose name I can’t remember, who behaved like a prima donna. “And then David Niven walked in and he was wonderful. He was
the star then.” She was once called out to a shoot for a program featuring the young Prince Charles as he met with local farmers. The excitement over the red royal helicopter hovering over the area tied up traffic for kilometres. “In the end, I parked my car and ran across the fields with my makeup kit to get to the farm.” Over the years, she’s made up prime ministers, cabinet ministers, diplomats, a wide range of public figures, and journalists - including this reporter. Fit and impossibly
elegant, her hair cut into a perfect greyblond bob, Hodgins often takes people aback when her age is revealed. Says Mansbridge: “Anchormen and anchorwomen and bigtime reporters, we think we’re all well-coiffed and dressed, and Joan is so far ahead of us in both those categories it’s embarrassing.” Hodgins says the career has been exciting. “I like changing people for the camera. I liked making a young man look old and an old woman look young, and vice versa.”

Second baseman Bryce Wetherell of the Northeast 49ers looks to get the call on the force play against the Penticton Somba Tigers in the championship game of the Trail Jays Safety/Net Security baseball tournament on the weekend. The Niners won the final 13-3 against the Tigers at Butler Park Monday.
‘Niners’ repeat at Jays tournament BY JIM BAILEY Times Sports Editor
The Northeast 49ers won decisively and for the second year in a row as they bombed the Penticton Somba Tigers 13-3 to claim the Trail Jays Safety/Net Security baseball tournament on Monday. The 49ers rolled to three straight wins before dropping a 5-4 decision to the Regina Mets Sunday to take top seed in the tournament. They opened the tournament with a 14-2 shellacking of the St. Albert Cardinals Friday, and followed that up with 8-4 and 5-2 wins against Penticton and Trail respectively. “We didn’t have our full squad this weekend,” said 49ers coach Nick Shuerman. “We were actually missing our three hole, four hole and six hole guys . . . so we scrapped out. We had guys coming and going, we’re nursing some injuries, so I’m pretty happy
overall – a pretty gutsy effort from our guys.” The Jays meanwhile opened the tournament in impressive fashion with an 11-3 victory over the Regina Mets. But consecutive losses to the Niners and the Cardinals, 9-3, left the Jays out of the championship game for the first time in three years. The tournament played under threatening skies for most of the weekend, yet it wasn’t until Sunday night that torrential rains washed out the two late games at Butler Park, including the Jays match with Spokane North Stars. Due to the rainout, Monday’s line up was shortened to the top two seeds playing at 11 a.m. for the title, and the Jays making up the game against the North Stars at 2 p.m. In the championship match, the Tigers squandered 2-0 and 3-2 leads early as the Colville
team capitalized on two Tiger errors in the bottom of second to score six runs and go up 8-3. 49er pitcher Austin Hegney then settled down, declawing the Tigers attack and allowing only three hits over the next three innings while striking out five. The defending champions are a much-improved team from last season, and the Safety Net Security title marks the third tournament the northeast Washington team has won this year. Last season, in their first year as a program, the team went 14-32. The Niners have already tallied 30 wins this year against only seven losses. “I had 10 guys come back from last year and we added about four or five new guys and they’ve bought into my system and we work hard, and things are going well for us,” said Shuerman.
The team executed brilliantly, exploiting its opportunities, as Nick Naccarato swiped two bases and Ryan Leone another in the first two innings to give the Niners an early edge. “We do the small ball game pretty well. We bunt and run, we hit and run, we’re 90 for 95 on stolen bases this year, we have a ton of team speed and it’s a fun group of kids. They are playing hard and doing it right.” The Niners ended the game on the 10-run rule in the fifth inning. Hard-hitting second baseman Bryce Wetherell led off with a double and after Derek Smith bunted to move him along, an error and a walk loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly scored Wetherell, and a single by Nick Hansen filled the sacks again. Sam Sprague stepped up and ripped a double to deep centre clearing the bases and ending the game.
The Trail Smoke Eaters have finalized its training camp and preseason schedules as it prepares to embark on its 2012-13 campaign. In a bit of a twist to the upcoming season, the Smokies will run a two-day rookie camp immediately prior to the main camp at the end of August. The three-day main camp will take place Aug. 24-26 at Cominco Arena. Unlike last season, the main camp will be preceded by a twoday rookie camp Aug. 22 and 23. This camp will allow the Smoke Eaters coaching staff to evaluate prospects to retain for the main camp, and possibly into the BCHL season on the club’s 22-man roster. Two days following the main camp potential players and coaches will jump into preseason action with two games played in Chase against the Prince George Spruce Kings on Aug. 28 and 29. The team will then travel to Merritt to take on the Centennials on Aug. 31 before heading for home where they’ll play their final preseason game against Merritt on Sept. 1 at the Cominco Arena. Smoke Signals: The Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League have signed Smoke Eaters forward Luke Bertolucci to a standard player agreement. Bertolucci was a 10th round selection, 200th overall by the Oil Kings in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft. The Oil Kings are the defending

The BCHL and FASTHockey announced a long-term partnership offering a rich digital media experience to BCHL fans across the globe. High hopes for track athletes THE CANADIAN PRESS
CALGARY - Canada will send one of it’s largest track and field teams ever to the London Olympics - but leave one its biggest stars home. Dylan Armstrong and Jessica Zelinka headline the 40-member squad named Sunday, the morning after a stunning women’s 100-metre hurdles final saw Olympic bronze medallist Priscilla LopesSchliep’s London dreams dashed. Canada has only once fielded a larger track and field team, for the 1984 Los Angeles Games, which were boycotted by 14 Eastern Bloc countries. The team is also one of the youngest ever, with just seven athletes with Olympic experience. “That’s pretty crazy seeing the team up there getting their jackets, I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to learn some new names’ because there’s a lot of great new talent on the team,” said Zelinka. “But also it’s missing a lot of great veterans who have represented Canada in the past that I’m used to being around. So it was a bit empty without some of them for sure.” Triple gold medallist Michelle Stilwell and fivetime medallist Diane Roy will lead the 20-member Paralympic team. Canada has targeted three medals in London and between six and eight top-eight finishes. The 30-year-old Zelinka, from London, Ont., will be one of Canada’s top hopes, coming off a stunning performance at the Olympic track and field trials that saw her win the heptathlon in a Canadian-record performance and then capture the hurdles title in a career-best time. Zelinka beat a world-class field including LopesSchliep, whose bronze was Canada’s only track and field medal four years ago in Beijing, and former world champion Perdita Felicien. Lopes-Schliep crashed into Hurdle 7 in the final and finished fifth, while Felicien was disqualified for a false start. “Certainly Priscilla Lopes-Schliep and Perdita Felicien have the credentials to hit the podium they’ve done it at world championships, and Priscilla has done it at the Olympic Games,” said Athletics Canada head coach Alex Gardiner. “Certainly that was a bit disappointing, no doubt, but we’re going to see them back I think. “Most importantly the three women in the event, Jessica Zelinka, Nikkita Holder and Phylicia George also have the credentials to get to the podium.” The squad is one of Canada’s most diverse ever. Emerging star Cam Levins of Black Creek, B.C., who will run both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres, leads a large contingent of distance runners that includes three marathoners - Dylan Wykes, Reid Coolsaet and Eric Gillis. Armstrong, the shot put world silver medallist from Kamloops, B.C., leads Canada’s largest group of throwers ever. “Hands down (it’s the largest),” said hammer thrower James Steacy of Lethbridge, B.C. “It’s definitely growing, and it’s only going to get bigger from here.” t ATV Tires t Passenger Tires t Light Truck Tires t Custom Wheels t Brakes t Shocks & Struts t Lube & Oil t 2 & 4 Wheel Alignments t Mechanical Repairs rss t Suspension Lifting & Lowering t Literider Rollup Covers t 90 days financing available with your ur Integra Tire Card

LEISURE
Help needy daughter make better choices Dear Annie: My daughter has been married to a drug abuser for 10 years. “Rob” can’t keep a job and sells everything on the premises for money to buy more drugs. He even took his 9-yearold daughter with him to trade her TV and other electronics for narcotics. Rob has been in rehab three times and makes lots of promises, but always goes back to the drugs. My daughter has a responsible job. She has taken Rob’s name off of the checking accounts and credit cards, and she hides her purse and jewelry every night. She was unable to keep up the house payments, and they are in foreclosure. She is currently living in an apartment, and Rob lives with his parents. With my financial support, she has filed for divorce. So far, I have given her more than $3,000. She lives in another state and has emotional support

from her siblings and us by phone. Here’s the problem. I feel like she is wavering. She keeps talking about what a great dad Rob is when he’s sober and how hard the separation has been on the kids. I know how difficult it is for her to be a single mom. But I have told her that if she does not go through with the divorce, I will not help her again. Is this too harsh? I want to be there for her, but I have to work, and my income isn’t that big. Any advice on this situation? -- Loving Mom, Disgusted Mother-inLaw Dear Mom: You are not obligated to support
your daughter regardless of the circumstances, but we are certain your financial assistance helps her to manage as a single parent. Still, she undoubtedly loves her husband and wants her children to have a full-time father. And it’s easier to forget the hardships once you are separated from them. Instead of issuing ultimatums, urge her to get into counseling to figure out why she continues to be drawn to someone so needy and incapable of being a true partner to her. Help her to be stronger so her choices will be better. Dear Annie: During the past year, I have noticed that my 73-year-old motherin-law seems to be losing her memory and becoming very rattled. She forgets where her son works, what day she is having dinner with us, and where her grandchildren attend school, although she has been there a hun-
dred times. She writes everything down on pieces of paper that she sticks in her purse or strews about the house. Her friends convinced her to see her internist, which she did. He gave her a series of general questions, which she answered and from which he determined that she was absolutely fine. Mom was thrilled. How can we get her to see another doctor when she is now convinced that she is perfectly healthy? We know something is going on, and it is just getting worse. -- Want To Help Dear Want: Your mother’s doctor should have tested her for executive functioning, which is probably a different test than the one he administered. However, it still may have been possible for her to pass any test if she was feeling OK that day and not under any stress. Your mother
could benefit from seeing a geriatrician, and we recommend you have a referral handy for the next time she is concerned enough about her memory that she is amenable. Dear Annie: My heart went out to

LOCAL CANADA DAY AT BEAVER CREEK PARK
Photos by Breanne Massey
From the top left and clockwise; Canada Day celebrations would never be complete without some birthday cake. As if on cue, Coun. Rick Georgetti and Trail Kiwanis Club treasurer Wayne Hodgson cut the cake just before the rain encompassed the event; Five-year-old Jersey-Marie Labey from Trail took a break from a busy day of family activities at the Kiwanis picnic area; Trail Const. Wayne Mingo and three-year-old Lily Fochuk paused for a moment to enjoy the sunshine at Beaver Creek Park; Catherine Manna-Taylor was scheduled to sing a variety of original songs and covers but was disappointed by the weather. She made up for it by singing to a young girl who asked to hear a few tunes before the weather dampened the event.
