Emotional testimonies at JRP hearing Sean Glanville Kitimat recently held it’s second round of Joint Review Panel hearings on the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Project Monday and Tuesday. The JRP gave local residents 10 minutes each to voice their opinions on the project, with roughly 50 people speaking over the two days. The response from citizens was an overwhelming no, with the majority of speakers in opposition to the project. Despite the vast economic gain the pipeline could bring to the region locals feel the risk is not worth the reward. Their sentiments echoed throughout the hearings was that it takes only one major oil spill to cause irreversible environmental damage to the region. “The number one thing people want to talk about is potential for spill. We can not underestimate the costs of a spill in this region and the environmental and economic impacts,”
says NDP Environmental Critic and Halifax MP Megan Leslie, one of many political dignitaries attending the hearings. The JRP speakers came from a variety of generations and cultural backgrounds, and a number of them had to fight back tears when describing this land the seems to invigorate and revitalize their body, mind and soul. The NDP leaders on hand were taken aback by their stories. Words like authentic, truthful, emotional and eloquent immediately came to the fore in describing their testimonies. “Listening to some of the testimony coming out of the JRP, it was particularly moving. The different perspectives from a young environmental activist, a grandfather, a First Nations leader, these people are unafraid,” says Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen. “This is unusual for Canadians, to express their emotions publicly. It’s because so much is at
risk, these folks were so honest in the face of so much cynicism in the face of the government and the oil companies.” Former Eurocan Engineer Terry Brown, one of Monday’s speakers, re-iterated the fact that it’s inevitable that an accident will happen and eventually a pipe or gasket will fail. He recalled one major project at the mill that had nearly a dozen failures within the first couple years. A number of influential people from both Enbridge and the New Democratic Party, official opposition to the Harper Government, were in Kitimat for the hearings. Enbridge Executive Vice President of Western Access Janet Holder and Spokesmen for the NGPP Paul Stanway were on hand. In opposition, Cullen played host to NDP colleagues including Leslie and provincial MPs Fin Donnelly, Alex Atamanenko, and Randall Garrison. Continued on page 3

RTA awards major contract

Sean Glanville Rio Tinto Alcan made a major announcement Wednesday regarding the Kitimat Modernization Project. Keuhne and Nagel Ltd., a major multi-national freight forwarder and logistics specialist has been awarded a significant contract with Bechtel and will serve the KMP. They have formed an innovative joint venture with the Haisla Business Operations to provide local content to their service offerings on the project and to allow for capacity development opportunities for local residents. This joint venture has yet to be formally named but an agreement has been signed.
Representatives from RTA, HBO, Keuhne and Nagel and Bechtel gathered at the RTA Kitimat offices in the City Centre Mall Wednesday for a presentation ceremony and luncheon. Michelle Lamarre, RTA Project Director of KMP was thrilled with the contract. “I think it’s very good, it’s certainly a long term relationship that can be very beneficial to everybody. There will always be a need for good transportation from A to B,” says Lamarre. Lamarre also mentioned the significance the local partnership with the HBO on a community level. Continued on page 2

with them before across the globe and Rio Tinto has also. This is a great day for the project and a great day for the community.� Keuhne and Nagel had a pair of representatives in Kitimat including Project Managers Mike Schoofs out of Toronto and Vancouver based Dirk Vogt. They were delighted to be awarded the contract. “We are absolutely excited, it’s been a long road, over four years with all the economic upturns and downturns. We are very delighted that we were able to get awarded with this business,� says Schoofs. “We hope to now partner with the community and give back a little

The Haisla Nation Council (HIV) and Haisla Nation Council (RoadHealth) were two of the recent recipients of 39 Imagine grants allocated to Northwest BC partners from Northern Health and RoadHealth. “Northern Health is committed to partnering with communities to support good health where people live, learn, work, play and grow,”
said Julie Kerr, Northern Health’s director of population health. “These small investments in grassroots initiatives support significant changes in people’s health choices, increases social capital as community members work together, and will help reduce chronic diseases and injuries in our region. I applaud the creativity and engagement of northerners in improving health for all.”

The NDP leaders are skeptical to say the least of these statistics, despite the chance these First Nations partners could be reluctant to go public with their support. “It’s a lie, and it really undermines the pipleines efforts. They continue to try to spin and insult First Nations while saying they want to respect First Nations, it’s ironic and tragic,” says Cullen. “You go to the First Nations and say ‘who signed up?’ and can’t find anybody.” The NDP leaders were adamantly criticizing a new boldness with Harper and the Conservative government, who have been backing the pipeline since days one. story,” says Cullen. “It will give us a better idea of the threats posed to our rivers and land and what impacts will be felt on the water and the people there.” Recent events such as the Enbridge oil spill near Elk Point, AB on June 18 have raised further red flags regarding the safety of the NGPP. “We’ve had a number of spills in Canada in the past few months, and people have been talking about their serious concerns about spills here and pipeline safety,” says Leslie. “We’re here today to be in solidarity with Canadians who are opposed to this pipeline. Continued from page 1 It was Leslie’s first trip to BC’s West Coast and she was overwhelmed by the sense of place and the connection to the land citizens have here. “Our leader Tom Mulcair went to the oilsands last month to see for himself what’s happening there and I had the privilege of being on that trip, so it seems only appropriate to come here to BC’s Northern Coast to see first hand the proposed pipeline route,” says Leslie. “Being here it’s a little chilling, it’s amazing how people care about this project and stopping it because of the possible impacts and outcomes. It’s all negative what they see, whether it’s their livelihoods, economic stability, their access to salmon and clean water, everybody has a personal story about this pipeline and it’s inspiring and a little overwhelming to see how unified everybody is, It’s wonderful.” After attending the JRP hearings the NDP leaders held a Public Forum at the Best Western Hotel in Terrace Tuesday evening, followed by a boat tour of the proposed tanker route Wednesday morning. “We’re going to get out on the water and look at some of the route that Enbridge is proposing and the places that will be put at risk. District of Kitimat 270 City Centre Kitimat, BC Strategic Community Investment Funds 2011 Small Community Grant In 2011 the BC Ministry of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development provided to the District of Kitimat $581,782 to assist the community in providing basic services. Grant amounts are based on a formula that factors in a base amount, population and assessment values. These grants generally apply to municipalities with populations under 19,000. These funds were spent to assist the District of Kitimat as follows: • Family Change Room Accessibility Lift ($14,430) to ensure that recreation services at the Sam Lindsay Swimming Pool are accessible. • The cost of a programmer for seniors ($24,487) to ensure the promotion of lifelong fitness to the community. • Imaging equipment for fire department ($12,057) to assist the fire department in their duties related to fire rescue. • Crosswalk/Extension projects at Columbia Street and Quatsino Street along with Haisla Bridge inspection and report ($41,642) to assist with pedestrian and traffic safety. • Parks maintenance and improvements ($90,157) to ensure the maintenance and upkeep of the District’s green spaces. • Maintenance on District walkways ($359,749) to ensure accessibility throughout the community. • Maintenance on District roads ($39,260) to ensure traffic flow and remediate problem areas. Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing Grant In 2011 the BC Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development provided to the District of Kitimat $164,455 to defray the cost of local police enforcement. These funds were spent to assist the District of Kitimat as follows: • Wages related to guards, matrons, administration and staffing ($164,455) to ensure manning levels to meet community needs.

Excited to arrive here in Kitimat My name is Sean Glanville and I am excited to be joining the staff at the Kitimat Northern Sentinel newspaper. I will be filling in for editor Cameron Orr during the remainder of the summer as he just recently became a new father. I was born and raised in Williams Lake, BC so I am very familiar with living in a small community. My newspaper background consists of working two years as Sports Reporter at the Williams Lake Tribune directly out of high school as well as spending time working at the Quesnel Observer. During the past few years my focus has shifted to my studies. In April I completed my Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Northern British Columbia. Both my parents were school teachers in Williams Lake and I have always enjoyed working with young people and will look to start my teaching career this Fall. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working in the newspaper business and jumped at the opportunity to come to Kitimat. I will always have a passion for photography and telling stories and the camaraderie and teamwork involved in putting a newspaper together. This was my first trip to the beautiful North West since 1999 when as a 15 yearold I travelled to Prince Rupert to play indoor soccer in the Northern BC Winter Games. During my past forays in the newspaper business I was strictly a sports reporter and I am looking forward to the challenge presented here at the Northern Sentinel to delve into all realms of reporting. I consider sports to be my passion. My dad was a Physical Education teacher so I spent much of my youth inside a gymnasium or on a soccer field with my twin brother Ryan. I’m an avid soccer and basketball player and went on to play five years of university soccer. The highlight of my career was winning the 2008 Canada West Championship with the University of Victoria. I hope during the next two months I can take advantage of all the beauty this amazing corner of the province has to offer. If you have a story or information please don’t hesitate to give me a call. Hewitson enjoys memorable UK trip It has been quite some time – a few years – since I took an long trip by air. Now, I just got back from the U.K. and I have to say most of my worst fears failed to materialize. Buying tickets, arranging insurance, knowing what to expect in terms of changes to airline security, in particular, in conjunction with some of the recent “flying horror stories” I’ve read or heard, had made me just a little unsure about the wisdom of venturing back into the “wild blue yonder.” Perhaps I just got lucky. The experience was different, yes, compared to a few years ago. In fact, it was quite different at both ends of the trip. But getting out of Vancouver International on to a brand new Air Transat Airbus was much less of a headache than I had been led to expect. I didn’t even have to take my shoes off, far less being exposed to anything like an invasive full body scanner. I had been informed about the baggage limitations checked and carry-on - so we packed light and well, taking several kilograms of baggage less than we were actually permitted. The people we dealt with – from airline reps to security

In Glasgow we experienced exactly the same friendly welcome and waltzed relatively without impact through customs and security. I was much impressed by the new (to me!) automated system scanning passports and customs declarations at Vancouver. In fact, all in all, getting across the Atlantic and back was slightly, but not a lot different than I recall it before 9/11 and all of the subsequent border security furor we have all heard so much about. Even the ticket costs, we found, were not tremendously different from 2002, the last time I made the same trip on the same airline. In fact, my agent, when she saw the quoted rate I had been offered after an internet search, discovered, instead of being able to “do a little better” was only able to come up with a rate double that when she
searched. The bottom line was that even with the addition of cancellation and other insurances, it cost little more to fly from Vancouver to Glasgow and back than from Kitimat to Vancouver return. Which brings me to the question – why is this? I thought open competition was to bring costs down. Not that everything was ideal – I just couldn’t quite get used to driving on the left again on these narrow, winding country roads. Driving with grassy banks apparently scraping both sides of a small European car remains truly traumatizing – especially when a loaded hay wagon, a bus or a transport truck whizzes around the corner ahead, seemingly at breakneck speed. I have to say I chickened out and refused to go manual – and had to wait an extra day for the car company to come up with an automatic car. I was
glad I held out after I took the even narrower winding road from Carlisle to view what was left of Rome’s Hadrian’s Wall, in the region. My biggest surprise this trip was to find that a handsome sandstone 18th century Presbyterian church around the corner from my old home had now converted into a pub – complete with wide screen TV coverage of the European soccer championships, gambling machines, beer, food and music – all the merriment taking place under the towering spire, the pulpit, the organ pipes and glorious stained glass windows. With pews removed and the upper balcony is still in place, but mostly closed off. I have little doubt there were more customers daily for drinks than the old place ever saw on Sundays for worship. There are very few signs from people of a collapsing economy – eat, drink and be merry! All in all it was still a memorable trip (so nice to see family and friends again) – but highlighted by an old adage – the more things change, the more they stay the same! ahewitson@telus.net

Young mentors at CHAMP seminar Cameron Orr In the Harry Potter novels, the titular character eventually finds a community in the fantasy school of Hogwarts after growing up in a place where he has no peers. Kate Young finds comparison to that story in Kitimat. Young, 18, was born missing a portion of her left foot, and it is her yearly trips to the War Amps CHAMP (Child Amputee) seminar where she finds connection with others going through the similar life experiences. This past May, Young took on the role of a junior counsellor at the seminar in Victoria, providing guidance to amputees and to their parents. “We’re kind of like a resource for the amputee’s parents and a mentor to the amputees,” she said. With her help amputees and their families can learn ways to participate in things such as sports. “You just feel like
you belong and you make friends and get to learn about things that help you do the same things but in a different way,” she said. While she knows people in Kitimat who have lost limbs, all of them are older, into their 20s or 30s. Certainly not any teenagers like her. Young started going to these CHAMP seminars when she was five years old and while she remembers initially not wanting to go, she’s since grown to love it entirely. “I made so many friends, it was just amazing.” Her condition is relatively invisible. She said no one will notice when she’s wearing regular pants and has to wear shorts before people notice something might be different about her foot. Accessibility also isn’t a large issue for her in Kitimat. “It might get a little tricky at times but

Kitimat LNG project pushed back to 2017 The Kitimat Liquefied Natural Gas project has been delayed one year due to market conditions in Asia. The first shipment was scheduled to leave Canada in 2016 but has now been pushed back to 2017. The news hurts most for Western Canada’s struggling natural gas providers, as they are now having to wait even longer for some alleviation of extremely low prices. The Houston-based Apache Corporation blames the proposed start-up delay to needing more time to shore up contracts with Asian buyers.
Apache’s proposed LNG plant in Kitimat, a joint venture with Encana Corporation and EOG Resource Inc. is scheduled to be the first in line to ship mass quantities of LNG to Asia. The project has regulatory approval but Apache Corp. need to take the necessary steps to ensure the project is economically viable before making a final investment decision. Apache, North America’s largest oil and gas independent producer, in the meantime are looking to ensure their is a stable market for the gas. Apache representatives were unavailable for comment at press time.

Bear Aware returns Sean Glanville The District of Kitimat has resurrected it’s Bear Awareness program this Summer. A pair of summer students, Darcie Reid and Dana Amadow, have been given the responsibility to spread the word of bear awareness throughout the community. “Our goal is to educate the community on bear safety and reduce conflict between humans and bears,” says Reid. “We hope to discuss with local residents, tourists, and business owners about how they can be more aware of their surroundings and do things like storing their food or garbage properly.” Reid, a Northwest Community College student, mentioned the program will be on hand at a number of community events. “We plan to visit Riverlodge, the Museum and the Library this summer, and talk to all the kids at their summer programs.” This weekend you can find the Bear Aware team participating in the Canada Day Parade. The Squamish Bear Aware program generously donated plenty of Bear Aware swag such as posters, stickers, and other memorabilia which they will be handing out at the parade. The Bear Aware team will also be going door to door with educational pamphlets as well as traversing the Kitimat outdoors and speaking with campers and fishermen along the rivers, hikers and more. For more information the Bear Aware office is set up inside the Tamitiq Arena. The program hope to finish off the summer in style with a yearend BBQ for the community and bear safety displays and demonstrations at the City Center Mall.

In a continued effort to encourage higher rates of recovery, BCUOMA has built a strong support network across the province. Today, participation includes 209 brand-owner members, 39 collectors and processors, 520+ return collection facilities and more than 4,000 generators. In addition, BCUOMA is reprising its successful ambassador program this summer – with two ambassadors touring the province to educate and raise awareness of the importance of used oil and antifreeze recycling.
Although it’s commonly accepted that oil and antifreeze are not household garbage we can simply throw out, more than one million litres of used oil ends up in BC landfills every year. When you consider that it only takes one drop of oil to contaminate a million drops of water, the problem is clear: there’s just too many drops to count, too many to ignore. BCUOMA is a non-for-profit organization that encourages British Columbians to responsibly recycle used oil, oil filters, oil containers, used antifreeze and antifreeze containers. Since the launch of the program in 2003, British Columbians have done an exceptional job of recycling their used oil materials.
Protecting our province from the harmful effects of used oil and antifreeze must be a responsibility we all share, together. So please, next time you look to dispose of used oil or antifreeze materials, find a collection facility near you. Here are three easy ways to do so:

Romans 8:28, “We know that for all those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” We poor fumbling humans bumble along in this life and it is hard for us to see God’s goodness when we are surrounded by all the brokenness. How can we say that God works all things together for good when it seems like most often there isn’t very much good going on around us? The vast majority of us will never be rich, we will get sick, we will suffer hardship, we will have to say goodbye to those we love and care about, we will make mistakes over and over again and we will wonder if God is really good. Well, think about what it would be like if God gave us everything our hearts desired as a reward for believing in Him. People would believe for the wrong reason. It would be all about, “what’s in it for me,” which is what got us into this mess in the 1st place. When man fell into sin, God rightly pronounced the judgment of death. But because He is good, in His mercy He also promised a Savior who would reconcile us back to Him. And that Savior is His Son Jesus Christ, who became one of us, lived a perfect life because we cannot, and then freely gave His life on the cross as the substitute for our sins, so that all who repent and believe on Him as their Savior will be forgiven and receive eternal life. God brought the greatest good from the greatest evil. He sent a Savior into this fallen world, thus giving us the gift of forgiveness and eternal salvation from the death and resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ. And in this we can see that we have a

In Loving Memory of
Roberta “Bobbie” Thompson October 9, 1934 - June 20, 2012
With strength and dignity Roberta Thompson (Bobbie) passed away on the morning of June 20th, 2012 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on October 9,1934, she leaves us to join her parents Robert and Zora Sly and her husband Alex. Remembering her with love are brother Raymond Sly (Sue), sons Barry (Delphine), Brian (Rena), Brent (Sandra), grandchildren Sara-Lynn, Amanda, Kimiko, Kiyomi, Ben, Alison and great grandchild Savannah. In 1967,Bobbie was the first female Letter Carrier hired in BC . All who worked with Bobbie admired her strong work ethic and the countless extras that she did for the Post Office. After 27 years with Canada Post, Bobbie retired happily to their home in Cable Car. She had a strong belief that we must all do our part in being kind to our environment and volunteered many hours of her time to KUTE. It was a common sight to see her walking with her dog Major, who was happy to collect any recyclables for a biscuit. Bobbie was a “Back to Basics” woman, enjoying produce from her garden, eggs from their chickens and took such pleasure in these simple things. She was an extremely kind and generous person who had a special talent in the kitchen. One was truly blessed to receive a loaf of bread or birthday cake from “Bobbie`s Kitchen”. She was an inspirational role model for her family and friends and we will all miss her. We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Huang and the angels on the nursing staff at KGH for making Bobbie`s final journey a peaceful one. Not one to make a fuss Bobbie requests no service, but think of her if you are baking, gardening or spending time with your family as these were things she truly cherished.

Sports & Leisure Salema and Dumas splash to medal haul The Kitimat Marlins swim club had two swimmers attend the AA Provincial Long Course (50 meter pool) swimming championships over the weekend at the Commonwealth Pool in Victoria. Competition was tight as 341 of BC best AA qualified swimmers were in attendance. The Marlin swimmers were up to the task though and came up with some impressive results. Alivia Salema (12) who just aged up into the 12 year old age group a month ago took double gold in the 12 year old girl 400 and 800 meter freestyle. More importantly she achieved her first AAA Provincial qualifying standard in the 800 freestyle for the age group and will now attend the AAA Provincials in two weeks in Richmond.
Salema also made two more finals (top 8) placing 4th in the 200 Individual Medley and 5th in the 200 meter backstroke. Zachary Dumas (12) who continues to make impressive improvements after a full season out of the sport continued to impress as he medaled or made the finals in the 12 year old boy age group in all 5 of his individual swims. Dumas took silver in the 200 meter butterfly. More importantly, his time was his first ever AAA Provincial Qualifying time. He will now be able to attend the AAA Provincial Champs in two weeks in Richmond. Dumas also took the silver in the 200 meter freestyle, a bronze in the 200 Individual Medley and two 5th place finishes in the 100 and 200 backstroke.
