Busing fees expected to net SD8 $80,000 BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

A decision to charge for children who bus to a school out of their designated catchment area will cost School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) parents $200 a year. Or nothing at all, if they can convince administrators they have a good reason for sending their kids to a school outside of their neighbourhood. That message was delivered at a meeting at Prince Charles Theatre on June 28, which about 30 people attended to get clarification about the new policy. “I need to be perfectly honest with you, it’s a revenue generator,” Supt. Jeff Jones told parents. He said the district is planning for anticipated provincial funding cuts after being told that money designated to help areas that are experiencing declining student enrolment will dry up in two years. Last week’s meeting was the third and final presentation to parents before the new school year starts in September, Jones said. He said the other two meetings, held in the West Kootenay, attracted 90 and 20 parents, respectively. Charging bus fees is expected to net the district about $80,000 annually, he said. Reductions in bus routes will create another $80,000 in savings, said district operations director Larry Brown. See BUSING, page 3

Busing

From page 1 Of SD8’s 2,500 students who ride buses, about 500 are considered to be attending schools out of their catchment areas. Students who bus because their catchment school had no room, or because a particular program — like French immersion — defines a larger catchment area, won’t be charged. Parents can apply under a hardship program if they are unable to pay the costs of sending a child to school out of their area. A number of parents at the meeting said there was no room in their catchment school so they were forced to send their children elsewhere. Jones did not address whether those students would be charged if room became available in a catchment school in following years. On the school district website (www.sd8.bc.ca), a question and answer page makes it clear that parents who have been sending children to another school by their own choice will have to pay for transportation or enroll their kids in the catchment school. A discussion about catchment boundaries for Kitchener students ended in confusion, with Jones committing to research the history. Erickson Elementary School principal Nancy Devuono said that Kitchener used to be in the Erickson catchment but that it was changed in 2010, and Canyon-Lister Elementary School is now Kitchener’s catchment area. When parents expressed frustration that notice about busing fees came so late in the school year, Brown said he didn’t disagree. “I admit that the timing is very tight on this,” he said. Jones said the district’s intent was to begin consulting with parents after the transportation fees were included in the board’s 2012-2013 budget was passed in May. But a motion to the board of trustees to reconsider the fees delayed his plans, he said. Only after the motion was defeated at the May 29 meeting in Creston did he feel able to schedule meetings with parents, he said.

Playground officially open BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

The colourful new playground that was put into use in Centennial Park last year was officially opened on Canada Day. A joint project of the Town of Creston, Creston Rotary Club and Creston Valley Rotary Club, the playground adds to the appeal of the nearby splash park. “The total project cost approximately $90,000,” said Don Low, a Creston Rotary Club member who co-chaired the project committee with Creston Valley Rotary Club member Greg Baker. “Major sponsors were Columbia Brewery and Creston and District Credit Union, which each donated $15,000.” Also contributing between $3,000 and $4,500 were the Creston school parent advisory committees, Creston Valley Insurance,

FortisBC and Shaw Communications. “We would like to thank all of the community members who support Rotary fundraising efforts and also to acknowledge the dedication of the late Steve Hernandez on this project,” Low said, referring to the Town of Creston works crew member who died in a cycling accident. “Rotarians had a great time working on this playground project and we truly enjoy seeing families in Centennial Park enjoying these new additions.” “What we are seeing in Centennial Park is the result of partnerships,” Mayor Ron Toyota said. “When groups like Rotary join with the Town of Creston and other organizations, we accomplish great things. On behalf of the town, I thank everyone who has worked to make this such a family-friendly park.”

Access to parts of the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area was closed last week due to severe flooding at Duck Lake and Leech Lake, and around the Wildlife Interpretation Centre. The dike along the south end of Duck Lake was closed because water was inches from the top of the dike, and wave action caused the water to wash over. The pump at the north end has been running constantly for two months, but the amount of water coming in is now too great. The Summit Creek/Leach Lake area was also closed to the public. A gate was put up west of the Summit Creek bridge to warn visitors that it is not safe to be in the area. Water was added to Leach Lake from the river because of a 2.5-metre difference between the river and water levels at the north end of the lake. “This puts unnecessary pressure on the dikes, so we need to equalize this and add water to Leach Lake so that the dike integrity is not compromised,” said Carla Ahern, CVWMA communications, stewardship and education director. “As a result of adding water to this unit, the internal flood dikes will be under water so it is not safe for the public to be venturing into the area.” Some trails around the Wildlife Interpretation Centre have also been closed, with signage marking those that aren’t obviously impassable. “The centre remains open to answer questions and offer canoe tours as well as have the gallery available for people to explore,” said Ahern.

Council accepts seal coating bid BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Creston town council voted at its June 26 regular meeting to approve a bid of nearly $190,000 for its 2012 micro-surfacing (commonly known as seal coating) program. The bid, by Miller Capilano Maintenance Corporation, was more than $130,000 lower than the competing bid of West-Can Seal Coating Inc. When asked why the bids were dramatically different, Iain Bell, engineering and public works director, said the higher bid came in from a company that was already busy this year. “I think it is fair to say that the lowest bidder is hungrier — it is a newer company that it trying to build it business and we are the beneficiary.” The 2012 town capital budget included nearly $250,000 for the road preservation program, intended to “employ a network

level, long-term strategy to enhance pavement performance by using a cost-effective practices that extends pavement life, improves safety and meets motorist expectations.” Council Briefs •A letter from the Creston Valley Motorcycle Association about plans to hold its first annual Toy Run on September was received for information. •A letter from the Agricultural Land Commission about a request for exclusion for a property at 220 Arrowsmith Rd. from the land reserve was also received for information. Coun. Wes Graham initially wanted council to support the application — “because it’s good for the economy” — but eventually supported a motion to receive the letter, which doesn’t require any response by the town. Coun. Jerry Schmalz opposed the motion after stating that removal of properties in the land reserve erodes the local agricultural base.

What We Offer

A Cup of Coffee and a Second Opinion When the markets turn as volatile and confusing as they have over the past year, even the most patient investors may come to question the wisdom of the investment plan that they’ve been following. At Edward Jones, we’ve seen a lot of difficult markets come and go. And we can certainly empathize with people who find the current environment troublesome and disturbing. We’d like to help, if we can, and to that end, here’s what we offer: A cup of coffee, and a second opinion. By appointment, you’re welcome to come in and sit with us for a while. We’ll ask you to outline your financial goals—what your retirement and investment portfolios are intended to do for you. Then we’ll review the portfolio for and with you.

If we think your investments continue to be well-suited to your long term goals—in spite of the current market turmoil—we’ll gladly tell you so, and send you on your way. If, on the other hand, we think some of your investments no longer fit with your goals, we’ll explain why, in plain English. And, if you like, we’ll recommend some alternatives. Either way, the coffee is on us. Kerry Ross, Edward Jones 115A 10th Avenue North

games by a team in Russia, then returned home to play the rest of the series in Izmir. After falling behind 2-0 in games, Arkas suddenly found its game and, with a crowd of nearly 14,000 fans behind it, the home side rallied to win the series. It was even sweeter because his brother, Marshall, had made the trip overseas to see him play. Perrin says other highlights have included being on a Canadian national team that beat Brazil, the reigning world champions. After playing in Turkey from last August through April, he returned to Canada and went straight to Ottawa to join the Canada national men’s A team, training and playing international games. The team didn’t qualify for the 2012 summer Olympics, but Perrin has his sites set on 2016, when Canada will have an easier qualifying path. “We’ll definitely qualify for the

2016 games,” he says. At 22, he’s one of the national team’s youngest members, playing with men who are as old as 36. In four years, with much more international experience under his belt, Perrin should be a leader in Canada’s push to the Olympics. In the meantime, he will return to Izmir, playing at an elite level and continuing his university studies. “I really love to play and want a long pro career,” he said. “Then, after 10 years or so, I’ll find something else to pursue, probably something that doesn’t involve sports.” And he’ll continue to accept the good-natured ribbing from his proud father, who teases him about taking his game to the next level now that younger sister Alicia has also been a Canada West rookie of the year — “when she was a year younger than you,” Dave laughs. “I don’t have a problem sharing the spotlight with her,” Gord grins.

Now 22, Gord Perrin has been on a steady rise to volleyball stardom since he first suited up for the Prince Charles Secondary School junior team. At six feet seven inches, Gord might still look up to his six-foot eleven-inch dad, Dave, but his leap tops out at 12 feet, something the senior Perrin never could aspire too. “Those knees don’t jump any more,” Gord laughs. “I tell him and Alicia that they have to surpass the level I reached in volleyball,” Dave grins, referring to Gord’s younger sister, who was just named to the Canadian national women’s volleyball squad. “But I think they’ve both done that now.” Once a Selkirk College volleyball star, Dave Perrin spent most of his adult life tending to animals in and around the Creston Valley as a veterinarian. In his semi-retirement, he turned to writing, authoring five highly entertaining books about his working adventures, and another, Keep Sweet, about the life of a fundamentalist Mormon woman (co-author Debbie Palmer). Gord, in Creston for a brief visit following the end of a long volleyball season, credits the coaching of PCSS teacher Mike Nelson for his own success on the courts. “If it hadn’t been for Mike Nelson I never would have made it to this level,” he says. “I wouldn’t exist in the volleyball world if he wasn’t coaching — he gets a lot of the credit.” Perrin’s PCSS teams never lost a Kootenay zone tournament and they finished second and third in the provincials. His jump to university level was paved with a full five-year scholarship, and made easier because he had previously met the coach, Glenn Hoag, who was a friend of Nelson. But it had its challenges. “University players are much stronger and more athletic,” he says. “In high school you could make it with natural talent, but in university you are playing with and against men, not boys. It took me half a season before I began to excel.” Excel? How about by being named the Canada West Universities Athletic Association’s rookie of the year in his first year with the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack? Or following that up with two years as a first team Canadian all-star? “After my third year I got the opportunity to join the Olympic program, so I left school to take on volleyball as a career,” he says. Perrin got an agent, then signed a two-year contract to play professionally with Arkas, a club in Turkey. He faced even greater challenges when he started to play as a professional. The cultural and language differences were enormous. “The first couple of months were tough,” he admits. Perrin is one of two Canadians and, along with one American, they are the only English speaking players. “The other 15 players can’t speak a whole sentence in English,” he laughs. Two of those players aren’t Turkish, either. One is from Brazil and speaks Portuguese and the other is a Spanish speaker from Columbia. Fortunately, the team has a translator. Being away from family was tough, but so was the competition. “In university there are maybe two or three

star players but at the elite level there are no average players.” If culture and language are hurdles, the lifestyle isn’t too bad, Perrin admits. “The team puts me up in a downtown apartment and a driver picks me up for practices and games and even the market,” he says. Nearly all of his living expenses are covered by the team, allowGord Perrin ing him to bank most of the money he earns from his playing contract. Pro volleyball is, after all, a big deal in Europe and many other countries. “When we are in Poland, for example, we are treated like rock stars,” he smiles. “Everywhere we go we are recognized and people are asking for autographs, photographs and interviews.” In Brazil, he says, teams are provided with police escorts to get to games. Hard work and travel are the common denominator for pro athletes, though. Arkas plays in a league that includes cities in neighboring countries and teams often travel for two matches each week. The top two teams in each participating country then continue on after the regular league season ends, forming a champions league. Earlier this spring, Perrin’s team, based in Izmir, the country’s third largest city, finished fourth in the European champions league, something no Turkish team had ever done. The highlight of his athletic career came when Arkas was playing to get into the champion league’s final four. They were swept in straight

As young man I used to remain sitting, usually conspicuously, whenever the Canadian anthem was played. It wasn’t that I had a particular aversion to the song, or to others singing it. And it certainly wasn’t because I didn’t see myself as part of the country’s mainstream — I had, after all, been an active member of the Progressive Conservatives since I was 14. The silent protests began one day when I walked into a university lecture room and read from the blackboard a statement left from a previous class: “Nationalism is a cheap instinct, and a dangerous one, too. I never did learn the source of the quote, but it has continued to stick in my mind all these many years later. Perhaps it was reinforced by the often vicious debate that took place in Canada in 1964-65 when former prime minister Lester Pearson proposed that the country adopt its own flag design instead of continuing to fly the Red Ensign, which included the Union Jack, a continual reminder, especially to French Canadians, about the British influence in Canada. I eventually came to terms with my own needs to protest and I happily stand and sing the anthem. What changed? I suppose more than anything it was being able to realize that I am deeply grateful that I was born Canadian, and also the understanding that I had nothing to do with it — being born in this country is akin to winning a prenatal lottery. We arrive in a society of privilege, one that is quite tolerant and that offers much to those whom, out of pure luck, were born into it.

It was with that sense of gratitude that I stood at the community complex on Sunday and sang O Canada. Standing in the downpour a few minutes earlier, member of Parliament

If I could change anything in the Creston Valley what would it be? The time, of course. I would like to see the Creston Valley adopt daylight time. From April to November each year, our clocks would move ahead one hour and then fall back for the winter months. Daylight time “makes the sun set one hour later in the evening, effectively giving us one hour more daylight in the evenings. There are many benefits to adopting daylight time — Cranbrook time, or mountain daylight time (MDT) — in our area. It will save energy. There is a saving of about one per cent of electricity usage per day with daylight time. About 25 percent of the electricity used in the average household is used for lighting and small appliances, much of this in the evening. By moving the clock ahead by one hour, allowing more daylight in the evening, we reduce the amount of energy used each day. It will improve health and safety. More light in the evenings makes for a safer community. As well, by adopting daylight time, the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District board estimates they will see a saving of about $60,000 per year. That is a lot of wasted health care dollars. So every year that the Creston Valley continues to not change to MDT, $60,000 is wasted. It will improve your quality of life. Adopting daylight time will allow for more evening hours of sunlight — more time to garden, walk, participate in sports and other outdoor activities. It will end the confusion. How many times have you heard people

(sensible, intelligent people) tell of missed appointments or showing up too early because of the time? Adopting daylight time will stop all the confusion about, “What time is it in Creston

I can only guess that the flag promotion was intended to distract Canadians from negative news reports and remind us that, even though we might disagree with actions of our governments, Lorne Eckersley that we are extraordinarily lucky to live here. vincial government would have to make a legislative change for the Creston Valley to be on daylight time. Before such a change could be made, an opinion poll would have to be undertaken to show that a majority of the registered voters in the area were in favour of changing. Then the province could either hold its own referendum on the question before making the legislative change or just make the change. In March 2011, Creston town council passed a motion to ask the Creston Valley services committee (CVSC) to hold such an opinion poll, asking the residents of the Creston Valley if they are in favour of adopting daylight time. The CVSC is made up of the four Regional District of Central Kootenay directors of the valley, John Kettle (Area B), Larry Binks (Area C), Garry Jackman (Area A) and Creston Mayor Ron Toyota. Mayor Toyota brought the request from town council to the CVSC but it has chosen not to respond and there the path has grown cold. Once again, democracy is failing to work. Instead of allowing the residents of the Creston Valley a democratic opportunity to once and for all settle this issue, Kettle, Binks and Jackman are choosing for all of us. This does not sit well with me. So if you would like a chance to voice your opinion on daylight time in the Creston Valley, please encourage your director to hold a democratic opinion poll on the question. right now? The financial cost of this confusion may be impossible to calculate but it is real. Another source of confusion that occurs because we do not switch to daylight time is modern electronics. Naysayers of MDT use the excuse that they can't reprogram their VCR when the time switches. But now, by not changing time, many of our electronic devices have to be adjusted because they automatically switch time. Again, more confusion. In an effort to try to understand how Creston came to be in this time warp, I looked into the history of the issue. In 1952, the provincial government held a provincewide referendum, asking, “Are you in favour of daylight saving time? The referendum passed and the province of B.C. adopted daylight time. For some reason that I could not find, Creston did not adopt daylight time. Not very democratic, if you ask me. Since discussion on this issue has been going on for a long time, I looked into what would be necessary to make the change to daylight time. The pro-

‘Scary things’ hidden in bill

To the Editor: (Re: “Lister farmer, local talent overshadow ‘political nonsense’ ”, May 31 Advance, page 6) Thanks, Lorne Eckerlsey, for writing about this scary omnibus bill that encompasses around 60-70 issues (I have yet to find anyone that is able to get an exact count on how many issues are in this one bill, little alone read the whole thing). Also thank you for writing about David Wilks’s scary attitude. I, too, think Dave is a nice guy, but for him to hinge his passing budget vote on a fear of not being re-elected or being ousted out of his group of Conservatives, as opposed to voting on whether it is right or wrong, is an example of peer pressure, not leadership. Wilks says it just could not be done unless he got 12 other Conservative MPs voting with him. Rubbish! Having the right amount of people standing with you is not a prerequisite for doing the right thing. There have been demonstrations and pleadings in front of the offices of Conservative MPs across the country, asking Conservative MPs to please do the right thing, and at least give each issue in this bill a week to look over. With well over 52 issues, that would take more than a year. Or it could have been broken into more doable chunks for research and debate. After all, that is one of the main job descriptions of a member of Parliament. Yes, these demonstrations have definitely occurred in front of Wilks’s office. I was at one. LeadNow got assurances that Wilks was going to be there, but he didn’t show. It was a great demonstration: kind, but pleading for Wilks to please return to what his conscience was first telling him, and vote no against the passing of this huge bill. This bill covers so many things, like Old Age Security, Canada Pension Plan

and Employment Insurance eligibility, and lots of other hidden scary things, like giving the FBI the same power as the RCMP to arrest Canadians on their native soil. To anyone with common sense this was a rush move by a government that does not want to be under scrutiny. Rhonda Barter Creston

It may all be beautiful to everyone else, but it ain’t to me. The people of this valley are my forte. Over the course of a season, there are thousands who cannot access Duck Lake. This is the first year since 1943 I have not been able to access the area, first with a horse and then a vehicle. It is not even passable safely by foot — a total disgrace to this valley. Tire fees come back to community

As we struggle to reach some serious summer, we also head into camp season for the kids. Current trends indicate a greater interest in camp-type programs with the defined start and finish in a short period that frees up more time to spend a whole bunch of money on gas to go somewhere else and feed the swarms of mosquitoes by a lake or stream. Trust me, I know. The camps themselves that we offer are pretty cool, targeting three years old and up. When you check out our leisure guide or go online to www. rdck.bc.ca/creston, you will find everything from Zumbatomic, kung fu, soccer, creative art, discovery science, drama, our super-popular Sweaty Boys Sports Camp and Girl Power, right through to fitness with Bootcamp Extreme. Come camp with us! We got a bit of good news the other day — our application for a grant from the Tire Stewardship BC organization (TSBC) was approved which will cover approximately half the cost of the arena lobby flooring. TSBC is a not-for-profit society formed to manage B.C.’s tire recycling program. The program collects an advance disposal fee, commonly referred to as an eco fee, on the sale of every new tire. The fees are used to pay for transporting and recycling B.C.-generated scrap tires ensuring that the tires are disposed of in environmentally responsible ways instead of ending up in our landfills.

their produce. Either way, be sure to wash your berries before eating them. Strawberries are very perishable and only last a couple days before a major decrease in their vitamin C content and antioxidants, so it is best to buy them locally when they’ve just been picked. While strawberries can be stored to last a few days longer, they are best tasting and best for you if consumed within a few days of picking. Once picked, strawberries do not ripen any further, so if you’re picking your own strawberries, only pick the ripest berries and handle with care. Any berries that are damaged while picking will spoil faster than the rest. If sorting through your berries, be sure to discard any with any mold, soft spots or other damage as these will ruin the berries stored around them. If storing them, they should be stored in a very cold fridge, just a few degrees above freezing to help preserve them. They also store best in a sealed or mostly sealed container. If possible, they should be cooked and canned or frozen immediately after picking. To freeze them, rinse the berries and drain well (or gently pat dry with a towel), remove the stem and place in a single layer on a baking sheet. Freeze until fully frozen and then transfer into a sealable plastic bag and keep in a deep freeze for up to a year. We love to just eat our fresh berries as they are, but strawberries make delicious and easy to make jam, fruit leather and compote, and are delicious baked into cakes, quick breads and muffins or pies. They can also be sliced into salads, blended into smoothies, frozen into popsicles or homemade ice cream or stirred into yogurt. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate one hour, or place in the freezer for 20 minutes. When ready, remove one disk, unwrap, sprinkle generously with flour and roll out to between 1/4” and 1/8” and big enough to come up only 1” on the sides of a 9” pie place. Sprinkle with flour frequently to prevent sticking. Gently lift the dough up and place in the pie plate (if it rips, it can easily be pressed back together). Remove the pie plate and unbaked crust from the fridge or freezer, place a sheet of parchment paper over the dough and fill to the top of the dough with pie weights or dry beans. Pour into the hot strawberry mixture and stir immediately and continue to stir until completely thickened and returned to a boil. Remove from the heat and cool 10 minutes while preparing the rest of the berries. Remove the stems from the remaining 4 cups of strawberries and cut berries in half. Once the cooked filling has cooled slightly, pour about 1/2 cup in the bottom of the cooled pie crust. Spread out and start placing halved strawberries and tightly as possible in a flat layer, using the larger berries for the bottom layer. Press berries into the filling. Once the first layer is completely filled, pour half (or a little more) of the remaining cooked filling over top of the berries and spread out with the back of a spoon. Add the rest of the halved berries to the top of the pie, starting at the middle and placing them as closely as possible together. Once all the strawberries are used (they may not reach the edge of the pie), pour the rest of the cooked filling over the berries and spread with the back of a spoon. Place the pie in the fridge for 1-2 hours before serving with whipped cream.

Charlie Wilson (left) and Jude Pelley make up Nova Scotia-based duo Littlehouse.

N.S. duo playing at Sasquatch SUBMITTED

On July 14, Nova Scotia-based duo Littlehouse, an acoustic duo specializing in original instrumental compositions with a Celtic flavour, takes the stage at the Snoring Sasquatch. Charlie Wilson plays Irish flute and whistles, and Jude Pelley plays guitars, mandolin and Appalachian dulcimer. Their music is atmospheric, rich and complex, drawing on both traditional and contemporary influences. They have been together for one exciting year so far, and they have given concerts from Nova Scotia to British Columbia, and will soon release their first full-length CD of original music. Originally hailing from the northwest of England, the promise of adventure drew Wilson to Northern Canada in

2000, first to Inuvik, then to Whitehorse, where she lived for seven years. Her recent adventures have included dancing on the walls of prominent buildings in Vancouver, sailing from Southeast Alaska to Vancouver, working as a theatre artist in Whitehorse and Vancouver, and as an apprentice boat builder in Lunenburg, N.S., and, wherever she is, practicing aikido as much as possible. Continuing her childhood passion for the flute, Wilson has over the past several years amassed a collection of her own compositions. In fall 2010, WIlson travelled to Nova Scotia to record a CD with her friend, Pelley. She stayed, fell in love and is now happy to call Pennybrook Farm on Nova Scotia’s south shore her home. After a year of playing together, the Littlehouse

www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca 11

project with Pelley continues to delight and inspire her. Pelley was born in Carbonear, N.L., in 1975. His interest in music stems from his father's involvement in seminal Canadian folk-rock group Figgy Duff, and also from the many Richard Thompson records that were played around the house during his childhood. He has been playing music off and on for 25 years, in styles ranging from rock and blues to jazz, bluegrass, and Celtic. When he's not working on Littlehouse tunes, or pretending to be a carpenter, he produces records and works on art music compositions. Doors to the July 14 concert open at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8. Advance tickets are $10 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, and $12 at the door.

Fourteen non-profit agencies are getting Creston-Kootenay Foundation (CKF) grants totalling almost $22,000 this year. The foundation is a non-profit agency serving the area between Riondel and Yahk. Being registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), it is authorized to accept donations of cash, securities, bequests and other forms of wealth and invest them for the long-term benefit of the community. It is also authorized to issue tax-deductible receipts for such donations. However, it is required to distribute each year a percentage of the earnings on its investments to nonprofit, community-service organizations that are also registered with the CRA. Among the major beneficiaries in 2012 are the Creston and District Community Resource Centre Society for its Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) program ($6,000), the Creston and District Society for Community Living for its Therapeutic Riding Program ($1,248), and the Boswell Memorial Hall Society and the Boswell Emergency Volunteers ($2,500 each) for autoelectronic defibrillators. Sizable grants are also going to the Creston Valley Hospice Society for education of bereavement supporters ($2,000), and to the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition for its Harvest Share program ($3,000). Smaller amounts range from

$167 for the Creston Museum to $1,000 to the Creston Valley Music Teachers Association for a scholarship. In some of these instances, the grants come in whole or in part from funds whose general purpose has been designated by the donors or from organizations using the CKF as an investment partner. This year’s grants bring to $146,099 the total the foundation has distributed since it began making annual contributions to community-helping organizations in 2005. The 2012 distribution is also the largest during that period, thus emphasizing the point that the more the CKF has in its investment portfolio, the more it can do for the community now as well as in the years and decades to come. In addition to its annual granting, the foundation partnered with the College of the Rockies to present its second annual soiree on June 2. Net proceeds from that event went to the greenhouse project at the College’s Creston campus. As well, the foundation is currently working with private, community and regional donors on the purchase of a colonoscope for the Creston Valley Hospital. When this fundraising is complete, the instrument will be purchased and placed in the Creston Valley Hospital's operating room. It is anticipated the colonoscope will be available early this summer. Further information about how the Foundation works and how to help it do its vital work can be found at www.ckfoundation.com.

Heart project underway EAST KOOTENAY FOUNDATION FOR HEALTH With the A Clear View digital mammography campaign well underway, many different community initiatives have been brought to the attention of East Kootenay Foundation for Health. Most of these initiatives are directly to do with fundraising but a new and unique project is aimed at easing the pain of breast cancer patients. Brigitte Langevin and Lorraine Covington of Creston decided to put their creative sewing talents to work and created the Creston Heart Project. The original heart pillow concept was founded by Janet Kramer-Mai, a registered nurse in the U.S. The

pillow is meant to be carried under the arm and reduces the pain from the surgical incision, protects against accidental bumps, helps ease edema and relieves shoulder tension for breast cancer patients. The brightly coloured pillows accompanied by a little note of inspiration are presented to patients at the time of surgery. “We are dedicated to the Creston Heart Project and put our efforts and resources into making pillows in the hope of easing the pain of as many breast cancer stricken individuals as possible,” said Langevin. The Creston Heart Project is always looking for donations of 100 per cent cotton fabric to make these pillows. If you would like to help out, call Brigitte Langevin at 250-428-4259.

4-H horse club members enjoy range of events

BY ALEXANDRA HAYES Creston Valley 4-H Horse Club

This year will mark my eighth year in 4-H. When asked why I have stayed that long, I always say, “Because every year offers something new and exciting.” Take this year, for example. In March, the Creston Valley 4-H Horse Club got to enjoy a spectacular equine session with the Koot ‘n’Neigh Vaulters, a group of horse vaulters based out of Castlegar. We were taught the basics of vaulting on the ground, and then graduated to the barrel, before mounting the horses themselves. Koot’n’Neigh had brought two

of their own vaulting horses along. One was a 14 hands high Bashkir Curly, which seemed to be just a natural vaulter. The other was a 17 hands-high warmblood mix, which was still learning the routine. The first few moves that we learned (the flag, the princess, and the hunter) were hard to grasp in the beginning. I wasn’t the only one just about falling off the barrel! But by the end of our day, it was truly amazing. Members were standing on the horses’ backs as the horses walked

on the longe line, and we even tried some moves at the trot, tried some doubling up poses and practiced sliding dismounts off of the horses’ hind ends! We had a great time, and it was good to see another side of the horse world. The Koot’n’Neigh club members demonstrated a few of their routines for us, too. The tiny tots — three members just 5 and 6 years old, did some absolutely amazing moves set to music — and the older girls were incredible — performing ballet type moves all around the horses as they cantered around the circle. It was, quite simply, breathtaking. See 4-H, page 17

4-H horse club

From page 13 The vaulting clinic was actually only one of three exciting 4-H clinics that we have been fortunate enough to have participated in this year at Diamond Cross Arena. Early in the winter, we were treated to a TREC (Technique de RandonnÊe Équestre de CompÊtition) clinic with Jocelyn Templeman from Trail. TREC is a relatively new equine discipline and resembles a competitive trail event. Riders are striving to have control over their horse at all gaits and are given points, for example, for having the slowest canter that does not break down to a trot, the slowest trot that doesn’t break down to a walk and the fastest walk that doesn’t break into a trot. In addition, riders and their mounts encounter a host of obstacles—bridges, tarps, low branches, gates, poles, jumps, narrow corridors, etc. --which they must traverse with competence and confidence. There is also an orienteering component to TREC which involves navigating a compass and following intricate maps, which, of course, is best completed outside the arena. TREC was new to us at 4-H and we certainly enjoyed our day with Jocelyn and learned a great deal about our horses, as well as ourselves. I think that that’s one of the most important things about working with horses. Every time you challenge your mount to encounter something new, you are also challenging yourself with how you respond. And horses teach us over and over again the value of patience and persistence. I experienced that during our January clinic with Wendy Price. Wendy is a western coach certified through Equine Canada. She offered our 4-H club a full-day clinic on the basics of good riding and helped each of us overcome some specific problems that we were having with our horses. Cookie and I were working on collection and patience at the trot and canter. Sometimes we both just get a little too far ahead of ourselves and become frustrated. It’s really important, sometimes, to just take a step back and slow down. Our day with Wendy was wonderful. She also reviewed for us some good husbandry practices and she gave us group lessons on showmanship and horsemanship. We really appreciated her skill and knowledge. Throughout the winter months we also had our regular riding lessons and fun days hosted by our 4-H horse project leader, Meagan Leslie. Even here, though, we encountered something new. We have new horses and new members this year — including Devon and India, Marlese and Sugar, and Stina and Cookie. When it came time to public speaking competitions in February, we were also happy to congratulate some first-time district winners: Devon van der Merwe (first in junior) Sue Anne van der Merwe (second in junior), Marlise Tessman (third in junior) and Elizabeth Brown (fourth in senior). Not only that, but when we hosted our regional public speaking competition, we were also pleased to welcome some first-time judges — including David Mutch, Shirley Conrad and Wendy McNamar. Our 4-H horse club year is always busy. It starts off in September with our registrations and our kickoff event — our annual clean up of the Goat River Bottom. This time around, though, it turned into a district event, with members from other 4-H projects joining in — and some prospective members checking us out. Then we headed for Rock Lake Camp and our fall camping experience with other clubs in the region. It was a fun filled weekend with 4-H members from Grasmere, Fernie, Cranbrook and all sorts of places in between. And what was new this year? Well, let’s just say it’s not every day that you have to stick your head into a bowl full of whipped cream to find some bubblegum balls, chew them as fast as you can and blow the very first bubble (with a mouth full of braces) as your team members are cheering you on. 4-H can get a little goofy at times. But it sure teaches you a lot about teamwork. For Halloween, we attended the Halloween Hoedown Horse Show in Trail. We had a spooky good time and won some awesome ribbons and prizes. We also had a club bowling party this year, and our traditional family skating party, as well as our participation in the Christmas parade. And this year, for the very first time, I actually sat on the float, instead of carrying the flag! 4-H for me just never gets old. Over spring break I went to Naramata for a weeklong provin-

Community housing society seeks funds for family housing

CRESTON VALLEY COMMUNITY HOUSING SOCIETY

Applications for funding of two affordable family housing projects for the Creston area have been submitted to BC Housing and the Columbia Basin Trust by the Creston Valley Community Housing Society (CVCHS). This action was confirmed at a meeting of the CVCHS directors following the society’s annual general meeting on May 30. The AGM saw the election of 10 cial club event, which was simply wonderful. I reconnected with some old 4-H friends, met some new ones and learned some important skills about leadership, problem solving and identifying personal strengths and weaknesses. It was a truly memorable experience. As I am writing this, I am also preparing for our upcoming regional rally day, which will be held at Fort Steele and which will be my first 4-H event as a Kootenay 4-H ambassador. I have a special ambassador training weekend to look forward to later in the month, and an exciting 4-H conference that will be taking place in September, in Montreal! I can’t possibly recount all of the exciting opportunities that I have experienced

people to the CVCHS board. They are Jerry Cyr, Alexandra Ewashen, Peter Hepher, Eric Kutzner, Ken Miller, Heather More, Terje Munkerud, Alex Nilsson, Carl Sawler and Rita Scott. At a board meeting immediately following the AGM, More was elected as president and Scott was named vicepresident. Kutzner and Cyr were returned as treasurer and secretary, respectively. The decision to seek funding for family housing was made after months of examination of the shortage of suit-

over the years through my involvement with 4-H, not to mention all of the absolutely wonderful people that I have met along the way — fellow 4-Hers, 4-H alumni, leaders, clinicians, parents and members of this community . None of it would have been possible, however, if it were not for the support and generosity of our many, many sponsors. Therefore, on behalf of my fellow 4-H members, I would like to say a sincere, thank you to Home Hardware Building Centre, Mawson’s Sports, Sunset Seed Co., Coles Country Store, Safeway, John Kettle and the Regional District of Central Kootenay, Columbia Basin Trust, Loblaws, Kristi and Diamond Cross Arena, and Cherrybrook Farms.

able rental accommodation for low-income residents of this area. In particular it was based on the advice of an expert consultant and a survey, which determined that was this, is the area of greatest need for such housing. The community housing society has recognized that, even if either or both of the applications for major funding is successful, it will need supplementary financial help from local sources if rental levels are to be kept low enough to make them affordable to families of greatest need.

As this 4-H year winds up for the Creston Valley 4-H Horse Club, we will be working hard to complete our Record Books, and we will be busy getting our horses ready for Achievement Day. But before you know it, it will be time for demonstrations at the Creston Valley Fall Fair and we will start the whole 4-H cycle once again. Will I be signing up again for next year? You bet! Cookie and I still have some reining patterns to tackle and I also hope to look into some 4-H related agricultural programs overseas. 4-H provides a wealth of opportunities and experiences for kids of all ages, and all interests. If you’re curious, why not give it a try. I’m sure you’ll be glad you did!

Beyond Wild keeps youth busy during summer BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Creston Valley

REALTY

LTD

Yahk - 55 acres 15 minutes $525,000 from Creston. Solar & wind C12075 power. 6 yr old 1300+ sq. ft., on-demand hot water, soaker tub, wood heat, greenhouse area & wraparound deck. 2 car garage & storage/work shop area.

Who says there’s nothing for kids to do in Creston during the summer? Certainly not the ones who have participated in Beyond Wild. “We do have a good core group of kids that come,” said Grady Hunt, who co-manages Beyond Wild and Grizzly Bear Out of School Care with Brandy Dyer. “One girl always asks me, “When is the next event?’ ” Now in its seventh season, the program for 10- to 13-year-olds is run by the Kootenai Community Centre Society, and offers a wide range of activities over the summer, including hiking, cooking, hockey and bowling. “I really love the kids,” said Dyer. “There’s a real core group that comes and I just have a soft spot for them.” The first event, a superhero night in which the program went to see The Amazing Spider-man, ran last night, and the next, a nine-hole frolf (Frisbee golf) tournament runs July 9. While most events are co-ed, boys and girls nights out will follow. This summer, Beyond Wild has some extra help, with Emily Kretlow acting as event co-ordinator and giving things a new twist to keep the program new and exciting for returning participants. “I wanted to do the same things that have been done in the past, but change them up slightly to make them more fresh,” said Kretlow, a Prince Charles Secondary School graduate who is currently complet-

ing her bachelor of education degree. “If we do get repeats, which we will, it won’t be the same event, but it will be the same fun experience.” Parents are also encouraged to get involved with some events, including an Italian night, when they cook lasagna with the kids, and a glow-inthe-dark dance. In the past, parents have also been quite helpful with organizing and refereeing a street hockey event. The program is an excellent way to connect youths who might not otherwise have met until high school. “If you’re 10 and attending different

elementary schools, by the time they’re 13 and going to high school, they will know each other,” said Kretlow. The kids’ enjoyment is obvious, and Kretlow said she often gets high fives from past members who find out she’ll be with the program. “You can tell they had a positive experience,” she said. “It’s been a good part of their life. … I wish there was a program like this when I was that age. I think it’s great that Creston has a program like this now.” For more information or to learn about volunteering, call 250-428-1347 or visit www.beyondwildcreston.ca.
