JUDGES CORNER

CONTESTANT CORNER THE FINAL THREE CUPCAKES WITH

Danielle is the owner of Crumbs Cakery and Creator of Cupcake Wars. Danielle loves cupcakes! But when it comes to Cupcake Wars, Danielle won’t be taking it easy on the contestants. Danielle will be judging contestants on their technical skills and overall execution.

Sandy Smith is a realtor for Royal Lepage East Kootenay and author of Kootenay Country Kitchens Cookbook. Sandy is so sweet, always looking for the good in each cupcake. And a nice balance of sweet is exactly what she’ll be looking for in avor and texture.

Mike & Joey are the owners of The Choice Shop. They have been selling cupcakes since grade 5, and are determined to balance the judges table with their masculinity. They will be looking for overall awesomeness in each cupcake

Becky & Robyn are the owners of MJs Floral & Gifts. Don’t mistake these sweet pretty faces for weakness. When it comes to judging appearance, it’s going to take a lot more than owers to impress these ladies.

July’s Cupcake Challenge is presented by Dream Event Planning: The Elegant Cupcake

July marks a busy wedding season for Crumbs Cakery! And to help celebrate, this round will encompass the eleganct cupcakes that are found at weddings around the Kootenays. Contestants must incorporate two ingredients from our challenge ingredient list. The ingredients must not only be in the cupcakes, they must be a prominent avor in the cupcake. Ingredients: Champagne, strawberries, white chocolate, edible fresh owers, lemon, almonds, and rice.

Danika Peltzer’s Horseshoe cupcake was a sight the judges appreciated. Danielle said “The cupcake was baked perfectly! I feel as though you have really nailed texture and baking techniques.â€? Sandy said “It was spicy with a hint of smoky bacon. The unique use of ingredients made it quite enjoyableâ€?. Becky & Robyn said “The bold colors and perfect horseshoe made for a great ďŹ rst impression.â€? Mike & Joey said “We loved the look. And then we loved the bacon inside even more!â€?

Casey Jenson’s Giddy Up cupcake was a hit at the judges table. Her stuffed potato inspired cupcake was an unexpected savory cupcake, which wowed the judges. Danielle said “The blend of jalapeĂąo, bacon, and cheese is classic. Combine it with a smooth, sweet sour cream frosting, and you’ve got a hit! Very impressive!â€? Sandy said “It was uniquely tasty. Makes my mouth water.â€? Becky & Robyn said “We were totally impressed with the detail and clean presentation. It was an excellent representation of the western theme.â€? Mike & Joey said “A cupcake that tastes like a loaded baked potato? It really worked for us!â€?

Tanya Le Clair made it through to the next round with her Bacon n’ Brown Sugar cupcakes. The thick sliced bacon and penuche fudge made for a cupcake that impressed the judges at ďŹ rst glance. Danielle said “It had a neat and clean appearance. The thick slice bacon was attractive, and the bandana liner was a great touchâ€?. Sandy said “It works as a great breakfast cupcake!â€?. Becky & Robyn said “Tastes like breakfast! Pancakes and bacon. Yum!â€? Mike & Joey said “Mmm bacon! It was a great mix of salty and sweet.â€?

Prizes Contestants are baking their way to over $1000 in prizes, donated by Crumbs Cakery, Sandy Smith, MJs Floral & Gifts, The Choice Shop, Pro-Fitness Gym, Dream Events, The Paw Shop, St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino, and Northstar GM. For a complete list of prizes, visit www.cranbrookcakes.com

region are continuing to be monitored very closely, and the RDEK is now asking residents and visitors to Tie Lake to respect a no-wake zone in the Southeast corner of the lake. “The water levels are so high at Tie Lake that they are nearing the top of our dam,” explains Information Of¿cer, Loree Duczek. “We know it will be a very busy weekend out at Tie and the increased boat traf¿c signi¿cantly impacts the waves hitting the shore. The concern is if the waves send water over the top of the weir, it could damage the infrastructure.” In the unlikely event

that a dam failure occurred, there could be signi¿cant downstream Àooding. “The RDEK and Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations have assessed the dam and will be monitoring it through the weekend. To help reduce the potential impacts, we have completed all the Provincial requirements to allow us to do any work that may be required and have sandbagged the area around the dam.” The RDEK and the Jaffray Volunteer Fire Department are out in the Tie Lake area today providing information to

Teachers ratify agreement Submitted Members of the BC Teachers’ Federation have voted to ratify the agreement-in-committee reached on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 with the government’s bargaining agent, the BC Public School Employers’ Association. In a province-wide vote conducted June 27–29, 2012, a total of 21,044 teachers cast ballots and 75% voted yes. The turnout rate was 52%. The results are sharp contrast to those of exactly one year ago today, when teachers voted 90% to launch their “teach only” campaign at the beginning of the school year. “I doubt you could ¿nd a single teacher in BC who is happy with this agreement because it does absolutely nothing to improve the situation in classrooms for students or teachers,” said Susan Lambert, president of the BC Teachers’ Federation. “It doesn’t address class size and composition nor does it provide

a fair and reasonable salary increase for our members, who have fallen far behind teachers in other parts of Canada.” Lambert noted that the BCTF was able to get modest improvements in terms of most teachers’ bene¿ts, which were extremely outdated, and in some leave provisions. “However, the most signi¿cant achievement is that that we succeeded in getting government take its concession demands off the table,” she said. “Throughout 80 bargaining sessions, government refused to budge from net zero and persisted in demanding the elimination of hard-won labour rights and fair process provisions around post and ¿ll, and transfer and recall,” Lambert said. “With this settlement we have forced government off its punitive agenda.” In the coming months teachers will continue to hold the government accountable for providing the funding, resources, and support

residents and boaters. Meanwhile, the water continues to rise in the Wasa Lake area. The water was up another 4 inches overnight and additional Forestry Crews are arriving on scene this afternoon to help homeowners sandbag. “There are going to be 60 forestry workers in the community of Wasa this weekend. They are there to help and anyone who needs assistance placing sandbags can ask for assistance at the Wasa Community Hall,” adds Duczek.

to meet the diverse educational needs of BC children. “This year alone, we are facing a $100 million funding shortfall due to inÀationary pressures, so we know there will be further cuts to programs and services in schools come September,” Lambert said. “BC teachers are proud of our role in building one of the ¿nest public education systems in the world. We will continue to advocate for our students and our schools.” The BCTF will also seek redress in the courts for past constitutional violations and to challenge Bill 22, which ordered an end to the teachers’ job action and compelled a mediation process under threat of harsh ¿nes. Secondary School for a basketball skills camp, something he says is extremely helpful for an up and coming player. “My mom drove me down to the coast every second weekend so I could train Saturday and Sunday at the Centre for Performance, said Denison. “Right after training we would drive home Sunday night to be back for Monday work and school. She was really dedicated to helping me get the best training I could get and I owe a lot of my success to her. It was on the coast that Denison had the chance to train with the legendary Ken Shields, former head coach of the Canadian National Men’s

Basketball Team. And it is that kind of instruction that Denison wants to bring to the area. He said that the reason behind his success is that he was taught “basketball intelligence. “Being smart when you don’t have the ball can make it seem like you have an easy time making plays. These fundamentals let you see where the game is going, giving you a chance to move to where you are open instead of getting stuck just watching the ball, said Denison. Denison will be teaching the camp from July 9 to 13. For information contact Pearl Singer at 250426-7410 or email singer31@telus.net.

YOUR CITY....WORKING FOR YOU! Coffee with the Mayor @ Swing Street Coffeehouse - Saturday July 14, 2012 from 1 – 4pm Free Transit Rides to Cranbrook Farmer’s Market This Summer

Enjoy the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market with free transit rides every Saturday morning from June 23 to October 6, 2012. The free ride comes with a catch: each passenger must be carrying a reusable or recycled bag, be traveling to and from downtown Cranbrook and indicate to their transit driver that they are attending the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market. The City of Cranbrook is funding the free rides for all 16 Saturday markets. The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market runs 9 am to 1 pm, but the free bus rides are from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. That gives early birds and last minute shoppers’ equal access to transit time. Trips to and from the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market via BC Transit are for nontransferable passes only. This innovative partnership between BC Transit and the City of Cranbrook also achieves five specific goals identified in the community’s long term sustainability plan – “Connecting to our Future.” For more information please visit – www.bctransit.com.

DO YOU HAVE SEWER BACK UP INSURANCE? Please check your Homeowner’s Insurance Policy. If you do not have sewer backup insurance you should contact your broker and arrange to have it included in your policy. The City of Cranbrook does its best to maintain the sewer systems, but has little control over what foreign g objects j mayy be deposited p in them causingg blockage. g The City will not accept any claim for back up of sewers. Claims of an accidental or unforeseen nature should be processed through your Homeowner’s insurance.

Low Flow Toilet Rebate Applications pp Available Now! For more information and applications about the Low Flow Toilet Rebate program, visit the City of Cranbrook website at www.cranbrook.ca or stop by City Hall.

You are invited to have coffee with Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski at the Swing Street Coffeehouse on 11th Avenue South on Saturday July 14, 2012 from 1 – 4pm. The afternoon is open for one-on-one discussion for you to discuss concerns and ask questions about the City of Cranbrook. Refreshments are not provided. Please come and join us!

The Cranbrook Food Action Committee, along with volunteers, recently readied a piece of land at Eric MacKinnon park for growing produce.

Work day yields results for CFAC The Cranbrook Food Action Committee recently held a work day and potluck dinner at Eric MacKinnon Park. By the end of the evening, the group had removed enough sod removed for a large garden and built up a raised bed that would be more accessible to those with mobility issues.

There was an excellent cross section of participants, including young children, young families, seniors, gardening experts and newly introduced garden lovers. The committee plans to hold a garden work bee at least once a week for the foreseeable future on Wednesdays from 4 until 7 p.m. And

of course, anyone who is interested in working on the garden can certainly pitch in at any time. For more information contact the committee at cranbrookfoodaction@ yahoo.ca or by calling 250-489-3917.

Student Testimonial

The Kinesiology program prepared me to further my education at the university level by providing me with the resources I needed to attain a degree. The relationships I built at College of the Rockies, because of smaller class sizes and personable instructors, are ones I will never forget.

Do you have a passion for exercise, sport, health, and human movement? Do you love working with people and having a ton of fun? Then Kinesiology at COTR may be the program for you!

In the first years as homeowners, neither my husband nor I were anywhere close to being what you could call ‘experienced gardeners’. I was driven by a love for home-grown produce and he was looking for a nice landscape that is extremely low maintenance. This meant, some shrubs and trees in beds covered with landscape fabric and bark mulch and pots and planters everywhere for colour accents and as means of growing vegetables, small fruit and herbs. So come planting time, we would set off to our favourite garden centre, armed with flats, headed to load up on annuals. Annuals are plants that only last one season and have to be replanted every year. This is compared to perennials which are planted once and then only need to be maintained from year to year. Some gardeners might not think annuals are a good investment, but these plants are relatively inexpensive and can fulfill a large number of roles in the garden. One of the obvious ones is the vegetable garden. With some exceptions, vegetables are annual plants, but they repay your love and care with an abundant harvest. And this is where one of the, maybe unexpected, alternative uses comes in. Some vegetables are not only tasty, but they can also make a spectacular looking display on a patio or balcony. You can sneak some hanging cucumber or tumbler tomatoes amongst the hanging baskets and they will give you a great look and a handy snack throughout the harvest season. Of course, annuals are most popular in hanging baskets and containers. And who could resist a wave of bright and lush petunias tumbling from a feature planter? But think of annual flowers as the all-rounders in the garden. You can tuck some colourful annuals throughout non-blooming perennials, shrubs or in areas where spring blooming bulbs have spent their flowers and other plants have not yet reached their full splendor. This will give you an instant show and that finishing touch you need to make your landscape look spectacular. And why stop there? Adding some flowers to your vegetable garden can make that area of your yard more attractive. Flowers will also attract bees - getting those pollinators to work on your veggies. Some flowers can even help with repelling unwanted visitors. Did you know deer really do not like marigolds? And why only plant in a ceramic pot or plastic planter? Get creative with the containers you use. An old barbeque or rusty pot can come to new life with the help of some annuals. One of my favourite displays I have seen recently is a pair of vintage hiking boots with flowers spilling out of them. Every year, new varieties of annuals come on the market with new colours, new scents or new characteristics. Annuals allow you to try a new look every year. But make sure to take notes or - better yet - pictures of the displays and arrangements you really love, so you can re-create them in years to come. Perennials, vines, shrubs and trees all have their place in your yard and garden. Like in a piece of music it is the balance of the different components that makes it pleasant. However, it is the annuals that offer the high notes in any masterpiece - giving you the most color for the longest season and making them a worthwhile "annual" investment. Till next time... happy gardening Submitted by Kerstin
