Canada Day celebrations a success Sean Glanville The cold and wet weather was a bit of a letdown for Canada’s 145th Birthday celebrations last weekend in Kitimat. However, a little rain didn’t prevent hundreds of people from participating in the wide array of festivities. “Overall I think the weekend was good, the rain and the cold weather put a little damper on it though so there was not as many people as we would have liked, but it still went well,” said Festivals Kitimat Co-ordinator Cheri DeMelo. The weekend events kicked off with Saturday’s Hill Climb drag races, and the fans were treated to a gorgeous day. Later that evening, the Hill Climb Dance saw the River Valley Rats play to a packed house at the Riverlodge Community Room. The Kitimat musicians put on a stellar performance. Murphy’s law was in effect this weekend, as both Saturday and Monday were gorgeous days which book-ended a miserable July 1. The dreary weather arrived on Sunday for the parade and other Canada day festivities. “It was sunny the day before which allowed the hill climb to go and it was sunny a day after, it just didn’t want to come out for us on the actual day,” said DeMelo. Sunday evening’s Stage Show featuring some terrific live entertainment fol-

The one minor change to this years festivities was selling glow in the dark toys to the youth, which was a major hit. “There were no real changes from past years but we did sell glow in the dark

toys like head-boppers and stuff like that. The kids really enjoyed them near the end of the night with the fireworks,” said DeMelo. “We had a good a great band and it was an awesome job with the fireworks.” Next up on the Festivals Kitimat

agenda is Saturday’s Dragon Boat Regatta which kicks off at noon at the Minette Bay Marina. Shuttle buses for the event will be leaving regularly from Christ the King Catholic Church.

Sean Glanville The River Valley Rats played to a sold out crowd at the Riverlodge Community room at this past Saturday’s Hill Climb Dance. The band received nothing but rave reviews from their performance, which included a variety of cover songs spanning many different genres including contemporary songs as well as some blasts from the past. “We just try to pick songs that you don’t normally hear cover bands play, but are excited when you do,” says lead vocalist Josh Marsh. “We enjoy playing outside of our comfort zones.” The Kitimat quintet is composed of lead vocalist Josh Marsh, drummer Andrew Murphy, Lee Mosdel on bass, with Dustin Marsh and Alex Zoglaur on guitar.

The band was formed sixth months ago and Saturday night was their first ever live show. “Murph (Andrew Murphy) and Alex previously played in a band together called Coldwater and I’ve always wanted to play with them, so when I heard they were looking for somebody I joined up with them,” says Marsh. “My brother Dustin who plays with me all the time anyways came along as well.” The group jams once a week in the basement of Murphy’s Kitimat home. Although the band is relatively new, their is plenty of musical talent and experience amongst its members. The Marsh brothers also play in a separate band. “Dustin and I play in a band called Alive in Kamloops and we do all original music and no cover songs,” says Marsh. Continued on page 3

Hawkair reach out to couple Sean Glanville Regional airline Hawkair has reached out to an elderly Kitimat couple who are reeling after their son was severely hurt in Fort McMurray. Ross Jeffrey, 76, and his wife recently received tragic news that their son Steven had been involved in a freak automobile accident. The Jeffrey’s desperately wanted to see Steven, who is currently receiving treatment at an Edmonton hospital, as soon as possible. Unfortunately, they found themselves in a financial bind and couldn’t afford travel costs. Upon hearing the news, Hawkair, who do not have flights to Edmonton, offered the Jeffrey’s a round-trip flight to Vancouver where they can connect to Edmonton much more affordably. “We were delighted that they were able to help us, said Ross. “Hawkair is flying us to Vancouver and back home once we return to Vancouver. “ Steven was enjoying a leisurely day

at a golf course in Fort McMurray when in an instant his entire world was turned upside-down. “My son was in a freak accident; he had just finished playing golf with a bunch of guys that he works with up in Fort McMurray. He just got home and he was at his condo taking his clubs out of the trunk and a vehicle with two occupants struck him, says Ross. “The driver smashed into the front of my son’s Nissan and it folded up like an accordion having him pinned to the ground. Alcohol is considered to be a factor in this incident. Steven, who spent over 20 years working for Rio Tinto Alcan and is still well known throughout the local community, had to have his leg removed before doctors had him air lifted to Edmonton for further recovery. He is currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit. The Jeffrey’s flew from Terrace to Vancouver on Wednesday morning and

then planned to take the Greyhound bus from Vancouver to Edmonton to be with their son. Throughout this entire ordeal Ross, who spent his life working as a taxi driver, a longshoreman, and at RTA, has learned a valuable lesson. “To be honest, at 76-years-old I’ve learned the hard way that we need to have money in the bank so we can get to somewhere when we have to, says Ross. “The way it is right now, we’re on a fixed income of $1,200 a month and we’re paying over $250 a month just for natural gas so it doesn’t go very far. Although they have already left for Edmonton, anybody who would like to make a donation to help the Jeffrey family recover some of their expenses such as meals and bus tickets would be greatly appreciated. People can leave a note at the Jeffrey’s home at 18 Bayer indicating that they’d like to help if they’d like.

BC teachers finally ratify an agreement Sean Glanville Members of the BC Teachers’ Federation have voted to ratify the agreement-in-committee reached on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 with the government’s bargaining agent, the BC Public School Employers’ Association. In a province-wide vote conducted June 27–29, 2012, a total of 21,044 teachers cast ballots and 75% voted yes. The turnout rate was 52%. Today’s results are sharp contrast to those of exactly one year ago today, when teachers voted 90% to launch their “teach only” campaign at the beginning of the school year. “Our board is happy that we have an agreement between the teachers and the employers association and hopefully we will see more peaceful times in the coming year,” says Art Erasmus, Chair of the Board of Education for School District 82 Coast Mountains. “We know that towards March of 2013 the negotiations will start up again because this contract ends in June 2013.” Rules state that four months before the contract expires negotiations may begin. Erasmus and the board are looking forward to a consistency in this school year which was not the case this past year. “We’re happy with the fact that what’s coming up in September is predictable. The teachers will go to work and the students will go to learn and the school district will run as it normally does,” says Erasmus. Due to this past year’s teach only mandate, it is still uncertain as to where teachers stand on voluntary extra-curricular activities. “The union hasn’t said anything about extra-curricular

activities, but we’re hoping that whatever is voluntary can be done by teachers on behalf of their community or on behalf of their students,” says Erasmus. “The teachers will be able to proceed with that if they so choose because it is voluntary.”

I am also optimistic this agreement carries the prospect of a much more positive start to the next school year. Dr. Charles Jago

BC Teacher’s Federation president Susan Lambert was disappointed with the agreement citing no tangible changes have been made to the contract. “I doubt you could find a single teacher in BC who is happy with this agreement because it does absolutely nothing to improve the situation in classrooms for students or teachers,” said Lambert. “It doesn’t address class size and composition nor does it provide a fair and reasonable salary increase for our members, who have fallen far behind teachers in other parts of Canada.” Lambert noted that the BCTF was able to get modest improvements in terms of most teachers’ benefits, which were extremely outdated, and in some leave provisions. “However, the most significant achievement is that we succeeded in getting government to take its concession demands off the table,” she said. “Throughout 80 bargaining sessions, government refused to budge from net zero

and persisted in demanding the elimination of hard-won labour rights and fair process provisions around post and fill, and transfer and recall,” Lambert said. “With this settlement we have forced government off its punitive agenda.” In the coming months teachers will continue to hold the government accountable for providing the funding, resources, and support to meet the diverse educational needs of BC children. “This year alone, we are facing a $100 million funding shortfall due to inflationary pressures, so we know there will be further cuts to programs and services in schools come September,” Lambert said. “BC teachers are proud of our role in building one of the finest public education systems in the world. We will continue to advocate for our students and our schools.” Dr. Charles Jago, chosen by Education Minister George Abbott to mediate the teacher’s dispute, released a statement Monday on the tentative agreement with BCTF “I am very pleased that I was able to assist the parties in coming to a resolution of this dispute. I want to congratulate and thank both the BCTF and BCPSEA for their hard work, long hours, and dedication throughout the mediation process,” says Jago. “I am also optimistic this agreement carries the prospect of a much more positive start to the next school year. The BCTF will also seek redress in the courts for past constitutional violations and to challenge Bill 22, which ordered an end to the teachers’ job action and compelled a mediation process under threat of harsh fines.

Despite being Kamloops-based, all their recordings for Alive occurs here in Kitimat. A third Kitimat musician, Calvin Lechner, is also a band member for Alive. Lechner played drums in 2008 and 2009 for Canadian rock band Faber Drive, based out of Mission, BC.Their recordings with Alive are available on iTunes for listeners. “Dustin has a recording studio at his house here in Kitimat, so we do the recording and the writing here,” says Marsh. The River Valley Rats are hoping with more time and more shows their fan base and popularity will spread and enable them fur-

ther opportunities. “We’ve been doing mostly bar shows and we will be in Terrace at the end of the month at The Northern on the 27th and 28th. Previously to this we were all in touring bands playing our own stuff kinda thing,” says Marsh. “I would like to start playing weddings and all that with the cover songs.” The band are hoping to line up more regional shows but eventually want to tour BC. “We definitely hope to cover the Northwest through to Smithers and Prince Rupert and hopefully eventually expand down into the Cariboo,” says Marsh.

Enjoyed a busy first week on job I just wrapped up my first week as interim editor at the Northern Sentinel and it’s definitely been a busy one. Monday, my first day on the job, I was thrown right in the fire. I was covering the Joint Regional Panel hearings on the Gateway Northern Pipeline at Kitamaat Village. For somebody who has spent his previous three years in the newspaper business covering solely sports, I found covering a hard news story like this quite an eye-opener. Instead of your typical light-hearted sports questions ‘How did the game go?’, ‘What was the key to victory?’ and so on; I was asking questions concerning people’s livelihoods. I also find it ironic that in a town featuring some of the world’s heavy hitters in companies such as Rio Tinto Alcan, Apache Corporation, Royal Dutch Shell, Bechtel and so on, not a single Tim Hortons. However, I was told there is a Tim Hortons in the works. Not sure what chemicals they put in their coffee but it’s been a bit of an adjustment for me. Next, how does the industrial region of Kitimat where thousands of workers are employed and millions of dollars in infrastructure sit, not have cell service? My office on Enterprise is a grueling two minute commute from city center but I still can’t get reception. Can the powers that be please arrange to have a tower built now? I’ve had a crash course history lesson as to why the town lacks certain amenities, a movie theatre for instance, causing mass weekend migrations of Kitimatians to Terrace. The consensus seems to be to blame past city councils rejecting numerous bids for retailers to protect established interests. I’ve been told this was a role reversal when compared to those halcyon days when Terrace residents came to Kitimat to spend their money on weekends. On the positive side, word is this town is ready for a comeback. A recent article in the Vancouver Sun predicts Kitimat to boom in the near future with mega projects like the Liquified Natural Gas and Kitimat Modernization projects. It’s exciting to hear the town is back on the ascent and I’m anxious to see what Kitimat will look like 10 years from now. I was immediately taken by the natural beauty of the region with its views of the Douglas channel, coastal mountains, and dense green forests. However, I could use a little more sun. However, making up for Kitimat’s dreary weather is the warm reception I’ve received from everyone. I can’t recall ever living in a place where the people have been so friendly and welcoming. Glad to see miserable June ending Some random thoughts after what I felt was a miserable wet long holiday weekend in Kismet! June has been a horrible month in terms of west-coast weather in Kitimat – waves of virtually uninterrupted precipitation-laden systems that have helped to dampen spirits, damaged tourism revenues and that have driven considerable hordes of people to seek some sunshine elsewhere. For the fist time in maybe 20 years I did not participate in the Canada Day Parade and was not present to meet and greet the usual host of old friends and acquaintances at the familiar Riverlodge celebrations. I was helping entertain my grandson, who was also missing the fun of running around outdoors as the skies continued their seven day dribble on our community. I watched my grass show me once again that fertilization has to be a carefullytimed operation – which has to be followed up with some regular grooming. Friends of mine who went to Riverodge came home cold enough to get into the sauna to recover! Not that we was feeling sor-

6OEFS .JTDFMMBOFPVT CZ "MMBO )FXJUTPO ry for ourselves – we had plenty of indoor fun with leaping hot wheels, Thomas trains, videos and watching parts of Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa, along with channel-hopping to see an exciting Montreal at Calgary Canadian football game, a less-entertaining giveaway Blue Jays collapse and a grimly boring European soccer championship that was as predictable as it was replete with Academy Award acting performances. With no national ties to either of the combatants, I’d rather have been out on a sunny deck barbequing like much of the rest of Canada, east of B.C. At the end of the day, in need of some fresh air, I took my regular drive to the end of the road to Hospital Beach and the boat launch – only to be somewhat shocked to find both locations blocked off with concrete barricades and signs not-

ing in the interest of safety the sites were closed due to the increasing level of activity on the Rio Tinto Alcan Road. These are sad losses to the community – despite modernization, this is hardly (at least not yet) a “busy” highway that presents any danger to adult careful drivers. I suppose having spent 25 years helping promote the use of these iconic facilities, there’s a level of personal disappointment to see their abrupt withdrawal from availability. New signage - Shell Canada, Kitimat LNG etc. - show much talked-about industrial development is still realistically possibly ahead – but a quick offroad detours show only more fences and little sign of real activity. I recognize it’s late on a wet Sunday – so I determined to make these same detours at busier mid-week times to compare. I also dropped into Radley

Park where a few disconsolate vacationers were huddled under tarps, or already inside their RV’s. A few more-intrepid raingeared anglers were determined not to let valuable fishing time go past as they occupied narrow shore-ledges at the edge of the bank-to-bank rushing and rather brown Kitimat River, still hopeful for a spring salmon hit. One group I talked to “had one on Friday but lost it,” and had a hit Sunday morning but were still waiting for their first fish of the Canada Day week-end trip to the rain forest. Much the same story at the pump house... There was no “sold-out” sign on Radley Park! All-in-all, I guess the rain stayed away long enough to allow the hill climb to go ahead and racing fans showed up in decent numbers – but it was a soggy holiday weekend in Kitimat – perhaps just one more of too many! Why is it the weather is the one thing you can’t lay at the feet of government? My weekend was brightened by a blogger wondering if there was any truth in the rumour that Ford, taking a tip from Apple, was suing other auto companies for using steering wheels. ahewitson@telus.net

Bechtel workers lend a hand to animal shelter Sean Glanville Employees from Bechtel and other camp workers have combined with the Kitimat Animal Shelter for a terrific cause. A number of workers have volunteered both time and financial resources to assist in helping animals. “We had quite a few of the guys who were missing their pets after being in camp for six weeks at a time. They actually approached us to see if we could use dog walkers and we said yes and the word kind of spread,” says shelter manager Maryann Oullet. “Some of the drivers or activity leaders got wind of the idea and they started to arrange dog walking programs.” The dog walking program has been going on now for about a monthand-a-half. The program eventually blossomed into a sponsor a pet program as well. These volunteers are not only contributing by walking dogs, but by coming by the shelter to spend time and socialize with the animals and also contribute financially. “There’s a few people now that are sponsoring a pet and what they do with the sponsor a pet program is they pay for spaying and neutering and having them altered, they will help pay towards their care and feed and medical bills and that type of thing,” says Oullet. In a town like Kitimat with so many transient workers involved in industry jobs, it’s a perfect fit for everybody. The workers can get their animal fix while they are away from home without having the responsibility that comes with owning a pet. Many volunteers have even offered to foster an animal while they are living here. “They can come in and spend as much time as they want and have their

pet fulfillment here and then go home in the end and not have to worry about the permanent responsibility,” says Oullet. “It works great both ways, and in some of the cases if they are living in town they are fostering the animal for us until we can find a place for them.” Oullet was thrilled when the Bechtel representatives came forward with this idea. She has been blown away by the positive response to the programs and notes it’s been a steady stream of volunteers between Bechtel and the camp workers. “The last two weeks we’ve had 12 to 15 of them down here walking dogs. Some of them take the dogs on two to

three hour hikes and others will come in on their days off to pick up dogs and spend the day with them down on the river and that type of thing,” says Oullet. “The Bechtel workers have also helped with advertising and try to come up with fundraising ideas to help us out.” Oullet is overwhelmed with the success of the programs, and in some cases the bond between the animal is so strong that the temporary relationship becomes a permanent one. “We are very happy because it helps alleviate some of the stress. In some cases the pets end up being permanently adopted because the families become very attached,” says Oullet.

have been able to slow down at least. There was quite a ‘thud’ as our 70lb Tayo hit the car! There is no way it could have been missed. This sad example of a human being didn’t even stop to see what had happened. The driver did leave behind the plastic cover from a light on the front right side of the vehicle and probably has a dent on the front somewhere. I doubt if we will ever find out who this coward is. Tayo survived amazingly. He had 2 fractures in the right side of his pelvis. Dr. Thwaites operated and he is healing well. We don’t know if he’ll ever be able to run and play as he used to, but he’s young and may, in time, be able to. Many thanks to Catherine from the Humane Society who was there in minutes to see if she could help. The police arrived and took details but we’re not holding out

much hope there as it happened so fast we did not get a license plate number. We want to thank Dr. Thwaites too for cutting short a visit in Terrace to get back to Kitimat to take xrays of the damage and see what needed to be done. It was a traumatic accident for all of us to witness, four young children and two adults. Tayo is a well-loved family pet and we are thankful he is still with us. The worst of it is, Tayo could easily have been a child on their bike or a little one running across the road! PLEASE SLOW DOWN PEOPLE – especially now summer holidays are here and children are roaming around more frequently during the day. Also, have the guts to own up to your mistakes! Maybe this person panicked? Maybe they’d been drinking? Maybe they didn’t have a license? Who knows? Maybe we’ll never find out? Maybe if you’re reading this you could send a cheque to help with the vet bill? Sincerely, Pam & Bill Vollrath

Dear Sir, Saturday, June 8th 2012, a beautiful sunny day….one of the few we’ve had so far…….a great day to go for a walk with the grandkids and the dog. Happily playing on the swings in front of Roy Wilcox School with Tayo, the dog, running around everyone, not a care in the world. Suddenly, Tayo hears a dog bark from behind a fence across the street. He takes off to investigate, galloping across the road. Of course, we start calling him back immediately and he obeys, galloping happily back towards us. Out of nowhere comes a dark blue car, speeding, and obviously not watching the road, smashes into Tayo and sends him flying 6 feet or more, landing in the ditch at the side of the road! I know, I know, some are saying that Tayo shouldn’t have been off his leash, HOWEVER, the road there is quite wide. There is a crosswalk just before the area Tayo ran across the road. When driving, we are supposed to watch out for children etc who might be nearby. Obviously, this person did not watch or he/she would

Ben Rego competes at X Games 18 in LA Sean Glanville Kitimat’s Ben “The Giant Killer” Rego recently competed at the X Games 18 in Los Angeles last weekend. The X Games are the Olympics of extreme sports, and the pinnacle of any professional riders career. Rego and two other British Columbia riders, Cory Graffunder of Vavenby and Bobby Prochnau of Savona, were Canada’s three lone representatives in Sunday’s EnduroCross event. The trio of BC boys were looking to represent the maple leaf proudly on Canada Day.

Rego finished 26 out of 30 drivers in seeding, with a time of 56.26 seconds. Rego then posted a DNF in round one of the competition. In the last chance qualifier Rego put on a solid performance finishing in eighth out of 24 riders in a time of 355.84 seconds. Unfortunately, Rego missed qualifying for the finals, with only the top ten moving on. Graffunder had a fantastic performance, earning a bronze medal and finishing less than a second behind the silver medal winner. He finished in a time of

511.68, behind Americans Cody Webb and Mike Brown who took gold and silver in times of 510.88 and 506.25 respectively. Prochnau had a DNF in round one but placed fourth in the last chance qualifier, narrowly missing the final. Rego snagged one of the eight open spots for riders to earn an invitation to X Games 18 at the Sacramento round of the GEICO AMA EnduroCross Championship in mid June. He earned a wild card invitation as one of the top two non-qualified finishers.

“Get the facts about HIV.

Get tested!” – DR. SUSAN MACDONALD Medical Lead, Northern Health STOP HIV/AIDS Project

HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

Educate: Test: Share:

Educate yourself, your family and your friends about HIV. Visit HIV101.ca today. The only way to know you are not positive is by getting tested. Request an HIV test today. Please share your new knowledge about HIV with others, and please encourage everyone to get an HIV test.

Skeena flooding subsides With the threat of flooding pretty much over for the northwest, the Kitimat-Stikine Regional District has lifted its state of local emergency. The R-D has also rescinded the last of its Evacuation Alerts -- in New Remo and Dutch Valley. The Regional District says the threat of imminent flooding as diminished -- although it says the alerts could be reissued if conditions warrant. But that doesn’t appear likely. Skeena River levels have been dropping steadily since peaking nine days ago. The Usk Hydrometric Station east of Terrace shows a reading of 6.87 metres this morning -- after topping 11.4 on Monday of last week.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT GROWING TRADE.

IT’S ABOUT CREATING A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITIES.

The Port of Prince Rupert is faster and more reliable than any west coast port. This strategic advantage is moving our economy forward. We’re expanding Canadian trade by moving goods safely, responsibly and sustainably. More trade means more jobs and more opportunities throughout all of British Columbia.

AND THAT MEANS A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR ALL OF US.

Sports & Leisure Salema just holds off Rupert rival The Kitimat Marlins Swim Club ran an official time trial for their members as well as a few members from the Prince Rupert Rapids swim club. For many of the younger swimmers it was a last fun opportunity to race while for some of the older swimmers it was a chance to have a last tune up race before the major swim meets ahead as well as to aim for some new time standards. Each swimmer swam one or two races during the time trial. Alivia Salema, 12, from the Marlins and Avery Movald, 12, from the Prince Rupert Club had an exciting race in the gruelling 1500 meter freestyle (60 lengths of the pool). They were neck and neck for the first 50 lengths of the race both on pace to break the 11-12 year old girls pool record and achieve their first age group National time. With 10 lengths to go Salema found another gear and held off Movald to the wall finishing a mere 1.5

seconds faster than Movald. Both swimmers were under the pool record and both swimmers achieved their first National time. Salema’s time of 19:33.77 was 5 seconds under teammates Kleanza Cathers old pool record established just a month earlier. Salema joins Kleanza Cathers, Arthur Firmino, and Kyler Corderio at the National level for the Marlins. All four will compete at the Canadian Age Group National Swimming Championships end of July in Calgary. Kleanza Cathers, 12, broke two pool records in the 11-12 girls age group. In the 50 meter breaststroke her time of 40.00 eclipsed the old mark of 41.09 by Audrey Erb of the Terrace Blue backs swim club from December of 1993. In the 100 meter Individual Medley her time of 1:16.05 broke the 31 year old record of 1:16.50 set by Cindy Mabee from the Prince George Barra-

Kyler Corderio, 17, broke his first ever pool record in the 15 and over boys 50 meter backstroke.

His time of 29.90 was his first time under 30 seconds for the event and broke the record set just a month earlier by Brian Dohler of the Bulkley Valley Swim club of 30.12 First year swimmer Ben Anker achieved his first AA Provincial time in the 13 year old boys 100 meter backstroke.

Good Luck! Athletes, Coaches, and Officials from the North West (Zone 7) will be at the Surrey 2012 BC Summer Games July 19-22 Follow the results at www.bcgames.org
