Football legend brings camp to Vanderhoof Christina Millington Omineca Express Daved Benefield, CFL All-Star and coach for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds brought his expertise to the NVSS fields July 6 & 7. Benefield and Claire Nielsen teamed up to start a football camp (Benefield Skills Development Camp) that would encourage aspired football players not only to excel in the classroom, but to gain balance between the two and dominate on the field. The camp is specific to Vanderhoof varsity and junior ages. The team gathered in the NVSS gym on July 5 to take part in a motivational talk by Benefield discussing his football career and what it takes to get to the top. Benefield engaged the boys in his talk in hopes to get them more involved with one another not only on the field as teammates, but socially to gain a “brotherhood” that would take them far on the field and in the classroom. Local rancher conflicted with Blackwater project Christina Millington Omineca Express It would seem not everyone is happy to see the success of New Gold roll into town. Wayne Daul, a concerned resident currently residing at the base of Mount Davidson stresses that the New Gold operation is having a negative impact on the value of his home and surrounding property. “It’s hard to work knowing that your place is worth less everyday with a gold mine growing approximately 2 miles away,” Daul said. “We have a really nice place,” said Daul. “We couldn’t sell it now with a gold mine in our back yard. Who would want to buy such a place.” Bekhuys stresses that the project is separate from Daul by Mount Davidson, and that the leases within their exploration area are not on Daul’s grazing lease. “What we’ve done since we took over the property is set up a mining environmental program,” Bekhuys said. The program ensures that when the project leaves the area it will be monitored to be sure it returns to its original state. Daul feels as though the efforts on his behalf are being ignored and not addressed. “We talked to miners and we’re getting nowhere and nobody is helping us,” he said.

Louise Yako BC Trucking Association In your recent travels you may have seen highway billboards or heard radio ads implying that BC’s heavy truck inspection force is understaffed and, therefore, road users may be at risk. This ad campaign is unjustly tarring an industry whose safety record is far better than the public is being led to believe. According to BC vehicle registration statistics, the number of heavy commercial vehicles in the province has increased by 20 percent since 2003, from just over 49,000 to just under 59,000. But, over the same period, injury and fatal collisions involving trucks decreased by 30 percent (364 injury and 20 fatal collisions in 2003 compared to 245 injury and 21 fatal collisions in 2011). And, truck inspections increased by 15 percent, from 26,635 in 2003 to 30,453 in 2011. So, according to those numbers, the truck travelling next to you is more than likely safe and being operated and maintained responsibly and professionally. Road safety is more than just statistics. As anyone involved in a collision will tell you, when a crash occurs the consequences can range from annoying to unfortunate to tragic. Our collective goal should be to reduce the consequences of crashes, by reducing the overall number as well as the severity. Every driver, no matter what kind of vehicle they drive, bears responsibility for road safety.

And no one feels that responsibility more keenly than the people who make their living in the trucking industry, because so many things depend upon it: their drivers, customers, loads, equipment and reputation are only a few. A good and improving safety record doesn’t mean that the trucking industry can’t do better. While enforcement plays a role, self-policing is a far more effective mechanism because responsible companies apply higher and more stringent requirements than any government rule or regulation could or should. That being said, we believe effective enforcement is taking place on BC roads. Consider a few more numbers. According to Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE), the provincial government branch responsible for regulatory compliance by commercial vehicles, the total number of CVSE staff positions (i.e., from inspectors to clerical support) has only increased by three since 2003 (283 to 286) and there are fewer inspectors (227 vs. 214). Yet CVSE increased the number of inspections by 15 percent during that time and crash rates are down. How? A detailed breakdown of CVSE’s staff positions shows that CVSE is working more strategically in terms of both staff deployment and procedures – something the public demands and deserves because they’re using our tax dollars to do it For example, prior to 2005, CVSE stationary inspectors spent on average 20 to 30 percent of their workday issuing commercial vehicle permits instead of conducting inspections. That changed with the creation of the Pro-

vincial Permit Centre (PPC) in 2005. Now, 18 staff at the PPC dedicate their time solely to permit processing. In terms of inspection staff, although the total number hasn’t changed much, CVSE has shifted more inspectors into its mobile force, almost doubling the number since 2003 (159 vs. 82) and increased the number of inspection vehicles by one-third. These changes give CVSE inspectors the flexibility to work either at stationary scales or on roads throughout the province, increasing the opportunity to identify trucks with obvious maintenance issues or those that are otherwise negligent in following regulations (including poorly secured loads). At the BC Trucking Association (BCTA), we’re doing our part as well by establishing safety-related policies and initiatives that our members support. These include everything from a review of the National Safety Code to help ensure unsafe carriers are prohibited from operating on BC roads, to the development of a training standard for professional drivers and the mandated use of technologies to limit speed for heavy trucks and monitor drivers’ working hours. The trucking safety record is our record, and we continually look for ways to improve it. I’m reminded of an anonymous quotation: “Statistics can be made to prove anything – even the truth.” A public dialogue about truck safety is entirely reasonable, but must be clear and balanced. It needs to take all the statistics into account, not just those that may add up to a skewed or one-sided result.

The BC Cancer Foundation’s Underwear Affair announced 1035 participants raised $633,000 to fund breakthrough research and enhancements to care at the BC Cancer Agency for cancer cases that occur “below the belt.” “We are absolutely thrilled with the support and engagement of British Columbians who chose to take part in the Underwear Affair this year,” says Douglas Nelson, President and CEO of the BC Cancer Foundation. “48 percent of newly diagnosed cancer cases in B.C are those which occur below the waist. The $633,000 raised in this year’s Underwear Affair will support groundbreaking research

discoveries to help us improve outcomes for British Columbia cancer patients and help us achieve a world free from cancer,” Nelson added. The 7th Underwear Affair started and finished next to Rogers Arena, and consisted of a chip-timed 10 km race or 5 km walk through downtown Vancouver before ending with a thrilling after party to celebrate this year’s fundraising results. Participants completed the courses clad in outrageous costumes, underwear and athletic attire as spectators along the route cheered them on. “I was diagnosed with in-situ cervical cancer in my 20s and my sister survived Non-Hodgkin’s Lympho-

ma,” says fourth-year participant and top fundraiser Brynn Logan from Nanaimo. “For me, The Underwear Affair is an opportunity to raise funds for research, and break the taboos that comes along with these cancers. I look forward to this event every year, as it gives me this incredible feeling of community, supporting a great cause while having a lot of fun,” Logan added. “The range of cancers that can develop below the waist is broad and the more public awareness that’s out there, the greater the opportunity we have to positively impact early detection and the research we conduct on

these diseases,” says Dr. Hagen Kennecke, a medical oncologist and current Chair of the Provincial Gastrointestinal Tumour Group at the BC Cancer Agency. “The Underwear Affair not only raises funds for research of cancers below-the-belt, but it also builds awareness among British Columbians about these diseases,” Dr. Kennecke added. The BC Cancer Foundation also released the date for next year’s event, which will be held July 6, 2013. Participants applauded with excitement and began registering on site immediately after the announcement was made.

British Columbia job market bounces back Contributed British Columbia job growth remains steady as the province gained 3,600 new jobs last month and the unemployment rate dropped to 6.6 per cent. B.C. gained 2,400 full-time positions and added 1,100 part-time jobs. B.C. ranks second in terms of job gains since June 2011 when compared to other provinces. B.C. has added 53,000 jobs since June 2011, behind only Alberta, which has added

55,400 jobs. Manufacturing continues to experience steady growth with last month showing strong gains of 10,600 jobs. Other areas of job growth include health care and social assistance (+6,200), business, building and other support services (+4,600), and educational services (+4,100). B.C.’s unemployment rate of 6.6 per cent is below the national average (7.2 per cent) and is lower than where it was last year, which

was 7.2 per cent. As youth employment increased, the unemployment rate for the 15-24 age category declined by 2.3 percentage points from May. Since September 2011, B.C has gained 23,400 jobs. Full-time positions increased by 26,900, more than offsetting the decline in part-time positions of 3,500. And since February of last year, 61,300 jobs have been added - B.C. gained over 69,200 fulltime positions, offset by

a loss of 7,900 part-time positions. Overall, B.C.’s labour force remains steady and now stands at 2,485,800. Compared with one year ago, B.C.’s labour force has increased by 39,000 people. Regionally, the highest job growth was reported in the Lower Mainland- Southwest, which gained 15,900 positions, and Thompson-Okanagan, which gained 7,800 positions. While there were

Highway improvements for Nechako Lakes Submitted Judy King A $1 million contract has been awarded to resurface 2.9 kilometres of Highway 27 in Fort St. James from Stuart River Bridge to Kwah Road. This project is a part of a $14.3 million program for 14 different highway infrastructure projects in the Nechako Lakes region to improve safety for local residents and commercial drivers. Highway 27 is an important corridor for regional economic development in both the logging and mining sectors. The Province is investing in highway resurfacing to ensure a smooth and safe travelling surface is provided for local residents and the industrial traffic, which has increased in the area over recent years. Priorities within Vanderhoof not “priority” Christina Millington Omineca Express I wanted to touch base on the recent announcements regarding the extensive upgrades to Riverside Park that has been deemed “unnecessary” by a few Vanderhoof residents. Since I have been a part of the Vanderhoof community all I have been hearing about from local residents is that they aspire to have an attraction that their children can enjoy and for tourists to have a reason to want Vanderhoof to be a destination to find solace from the never ending relationship with the asphalt that layout their travels. A project in particular seems to be lost in translation as it has yet to see light of day in a community that has no such luxury. Summer’s can be long, especially when one can’t find a break from the heat, therefore I feel the need to define the very project that has taken a back seat to community “priorities.” Swimming pool: a structure, often a concrete-lined excavation of rectangular shape that is filled with water and used for swimming. Simple really, however, yet to be seen. Smaller communities thrive on the traffic that so often passes through, especially when it’s a main highway that goes through the heart of town. Personally, when I travel I go off visual aids to lure me to want to stop for a break, or to stay overnight after a long days travel. I often like to venture around a community, take in the sights and experience a place that I may not have the luxury of visiting again. Therefore, it only makes sense to want to make a community welcoming, accommodating and family friendly. I can’t say that there is a staple here in Vanderhoof that I am drawn to, so I’m left to wonder what tourists are taking away from their time being spent here - whether that be short or long-term. Vanderhoof is currently populated with playing fields, outdoor space that can be utilized for “outdoor exercise equipment,” so why this need to dig up Riverside to accommodate for a development that is not necessary? In my opinion, the space allocated for this costly project would suit pool facilities quite nicely. As a community we need to voice our wants and needs, especially if we want to see results. A real life fairytale Christina Millington Omineca Express I wanted to take a break from writing the typical editorial and focus on a bit of writing that I often find solace in. We tend to find ourselves day dreaming about that perfect love story that we wish to have at some point in our life. Some often only experience the thought of it, where others simply live it – day in, day out. Where else did all those romantic love stories come from? They were lived through those whom aspired to have a love that was so often written about rather than experienced of course. True love brought to you from the hopeless romantics out there – I can honestly say I am one of them. During my 27 years I have searched high and low for a love that would make my heart flutter, my knees buckle and my eyes sparkle. I believe I had it once. I’m sure you’re wondering why that love is no longer present in my life and why I find myself writing about it rather than living it. For all you skeptics out there, I’m going to share my love story with you all in hopes that you can believe it truly does exist. It was a typical Ontario winter. Road conditions were less than ideal, however, I found myself plowing through the snow covered highways to Peterborough, Ontario, where my final destination would be at the home of a young man that would have me falling head over heels the very moment he would peak his head out the door. The evening started off a quiet one. We were both shy at dinner; nonetheless, we exchanged the odd smile when we caught one another’s eye, the highlight of dinner that would make those quiet lulls nothing less than perfect. Afterwards, we drove to the local Tim Hortons where we grabbed two hot chocolates to go.

Eventually we made it down to the canal, where we scuffled across the frozen river to then find ourselves on the other side making our way down a snow covered path. He offered me one of his gloves so that my hand wouldn’t get cold as I held my hot chocolate – a moment that displayed a true gentlemen. As we continued to walk we opened up to one another and shared a few laughs as we told stories of our lives in hopes to better acquaint ourselves with one another. As we made our way back across the ice, he paused, grabbed my hand and with a quick shuffle of his feet we danced beneath the stars. In that moment I couldn’t help but feel I was the luckiest girl for I found my other half in just a few short hours. As many dates do, the end of ours came far too quickly. I found myself back on the road home with stars in my eyes and butterflies in my heart. We spent five years together to find ourselves in different places near the end. Being a recent graduate I had the determination to find myself a place in the print industry, where he was obligated to take over the family business, leaving him confined to his hometown. We no longer fit in one another’s life, which only meant one thing – we would go our separate ways. It wasn’t that we fell out of love; it was that we loved each other enough to know what was best for the both of us. We remain good friends; we share our life stories and what we aspire for our futures ahead. Sometimes it’s where we find ourselves after love that allows us to appreciate the time we had when it is present in our lives. Believe in it for it’s out there. It may not present itself in that fairy tale way that you read about in books or see on the big screen – it’s your version, the ultimate fairytale.

Sharon Unger, Vanderhoof paramedic approached Sgt. Jason Keays of the Vanderhoof RCMP to put together a “Jail and Bail” operation to take place within the Vanderhoof community to raise money for Cops for Can-

cer. “This is going to be a big event,” said Keays. Participants will be notified before an arrest takes place in order to refrain from any complications that may revolve around work schedules. Minimum bail amount is set at $300. Event dates are to be announced.

Telegraph Trail Visit the old telegraph route, built in the 1890s, now converted into a series of walking trails. The telegraph line was built during the Klondike Gold Rush to allow for communication between the gold ďŹ elds and surrounding towns. The line has not been used since the 30â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, but sections of the original trail are there to be explored south of Vanderhoof at Hogsback Lake. The lake is a great place for swimming in the summer and the trail is perfect for hiking or mountain biking. The 10km Telegraph Trail stretches to Blackwater Road.

Huckleberry Mines Ltd. is a 19,000 TPD open pit copper molybdenum mine located 120 kilometers south of Houston in west central British Columbia. The mine has been in operation since in September 1997 and closure is planned for 2021. We are currently recruiting for the following position:

Millwright Reporting to the Mill Maintenance Supervisor and working closely with other tradesmen and the operating department, the successful applicant will be responsible for maintenance work in the mill, crusher and other areas of the mine. Duties will include planned and preventative maintenance on the SAG mill, ball mills, crusher, conveyor belts, pumps and other equipment. The successful candidate must possess a journeyman’s trade qualification and have a minimum of five years experience in an industrial environment. Preference will be given to applicants with mining experience and individuals who are also licensed or experienced in welding. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential for this position. Huckleberry Mines is a remote mine where its employees live in a camp environment on their days of work. The Millwright position works a 7 x 7 schedule (7 days in, 7 days out). While at the mine site all meals and accommodations are provided free of charge to employees. The NVSS gym was full of enthusiasm and team spirit on July 5 as CFL All-Star; Daved Benefield delivered a motivational talk to the kids. The bleachers were filled with aspiring football players and their parents as they listened intently to what Benefield had to say about the game and how to get to the top. Born and raised in Southern California, Benefield stemmed from a family that revolved around values and making the most of what you’re allotted.

Benefield’s dad, a Vietnam veteran, his mother a city worker made sure that their son had an enriching upbringing that would provide opportunity when needed. “I started playing football in my sophomore year,” said Benefield. “I played because my friends were playing.” Benefield stressed that “teamsmanship” and learning the “fundamentals” are the key component when on the field come game day. “When you’re out there playing the game, you’re not alone,” he said. “You either want the job, or you don’t. You get to the point where you love it and don’t want to leave it.”

Benefield has been playing professional football for 13 years alongside All-Star athletes and coaches that exude a comradery on and off the field. “Brotherhood is what you learn,” echoed through the gymnasium as Benefield engaged the boys to speak up and share their goals and passion not only on the field, but also off. According to Benefield, education is the backbone behind anything you do in life – whether that is with sports or day-to-day endeavours, “set an example” not only for yourself, but your teammates as well. “You dream big and you go for it,” said Benefield. “That’s what football teaches you.”
