Vandals hit college greenhouse BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
TODAY'S WEATHER
College of the Rockies Community Greenhouse staff were dismayed on July 4 to find that several vegetable beds on the Creston campus had been vandalized overnight. Carrots, potatoes, beets, cabbage,
leeks, peppers and onions had been ripped from the ground. Most were dumped on the ground, while some onions and beets — the latter minus their tops — were taken. “It’s not someone who needed the food,” said greenhouse program co-ordinator Anita Sawyer, who also noted that a greenhouse’s plastic side was sliced open,

although no damage occurred inside. “If it was, we wouldn’t be so bothered.” The biggest concern is the setback to the greenhouse’s recipients, mainly the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors and the Creston Valley Gleaners Society food bank, as well as other nonprofit groups. The Town of Creston has embarked on a review of development cost charges (DCCs), a system that pre-determines the costs of building and upgrading water, sewer and roads to accommodate new development. “This is a process that should be reviewed regularly to ensure it meets the needs of developers and the town,” municipal services co-ordinator Ross Beddoes told town council last week. Beddoes said one public meeting was held on May 31 and about 15 residents and developers attended and were asked for input. DCCs were first introduced in Creston in 1980 and included property in the extreme southwest portion of the town. In 1981, the Alice Siding area was designated as a DCC site. The most recent update was in 2009. At the direction of town council, Focus Corporation, a Rossland firm, was contracted to review the DCC bylaw, which addresses how water, sanitary sewer, storm drain and road improvements off of development sites are financed. While developers foot the full costs of infrastructure on a site, expansions or upgrades to systems away from the development are often required, at no direct benefit to the existing taxpayer. DCCs are intended to ensure developers know the full cost of proposed developments when they embark on a project. See DCCs, page 3

DCCs Canyon potter loves firing with wood
From page 1 “Developers from outside of town generally consider that DCCs are an indication that local government has a plan in place and that they can operate without fear of surprise financial charges once the work is underway,” Beddoes said. Town engineering manager Colin Farynowski took council through a process in which infrastructure upgrades and their costs are identified in anticipation of new development. He explained that some of the upgrades would be of benefit to existing taxpayers as well as any new development, and that council would have to decide how to apportion the costs. The presentation by Beddoes and Farynowski was intended to provide a basis for town council as it moves through the DCC bylaw review process, which will continue with another public meeting later this summer, on a date yet to be announced. “This is very interesting and thoughtful approach to development and how the costs are allocated,” said Mayor Ron Toyota. “By working with developers and taxpayers we can prepare for the future and ensure that future developments fit with the official community plan, which is also under review.”

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Gunda Stewart has been firing her pottery the hard way since 2004 when she, with the help of husband, Wayne, built a large brick kiln in a lean-to behind her studio. Last week, Wayne started a small fire at 6 a.m. in a seven-foot-high kiln that replaced the original two years ago. By mid-afternoon the kiln, which Stewart had carefully loaded earlier in the week, was registering more than 1,222 C (2,231.6 F), the temperature at which cone 6 bends. Throughout the process, she was pushing wood through a small opening into the firebox at a rate of a half-dozen pieces every five minutes or so. For 15 hours, the fire has to be closely tended. Since constructing her first wood-fired kiln nearly eight years ago, Stewart has fallen in love with the process, which she describes as “expensive and labour intensive”. It costs about $300 per firing for the wood, grinding wheels (for kiln shelves and posts) and grates, which are replaced every five or six firings. The wood also has to be split; for the most part, that’s Wayne’s job. An accomplished potter long before she took to wood firing, Stewart describes her work as functional, with influences from English, German and Japanese folk pottery. And in the last year or so, she’s made another dramatic change, selling nearly all of her work locally, instead of galleries around the country, “which always demand my best pieces.” “Strictly being a local potter, I’m loving it,” she smiles. “To be in a small community and to know your customers is very special. Local people are such great supporters.” Stewart admits to hedging a bit on the local angle — she’s finding it hard to say no to orders

perature, but will work to hold it at slightly lower temperatures for “soak” periods. Inside, the heat is hardening the clay bowls, plates, mugs and other containers, melting the special glazes and decorating them with tiny marks from wood ash that flies around in the high temperatures. “It’s a fine balance between air and fuel,” she says. “Too much fuel and the kiln atmosphere changes to a dark, smoky one, which causes the black glazes to run.” Subtlety and wood firing go together like Stewart and her kick-propelled potter’s wheel in the studio. Wood firing and a kick wheel? Hasn’t she heard about electricity? Sure, but she prefers the silence of the kick wheel and the endless variations that the wood kiln puts onto the surface of her pots. “I enjoy the physicality of the work, too, both inside the studio and out here at the kiln.” She and Wayne got plenty of physical work in when they constructed the first kiln from tons of bricks in 2004. “It should have lasted 20 years, but we got bad bricks.”
The aging of that kiln was also sped up by the salt-firing process she was using, throwing handfuls of salt into the flames to create unique and hard to control surfaces on the pieces inside. That first kiln lasted five years, then the couple rolled up their sleeves and set to work on a new one, with a slightly different design. At seven feet tall and nearly eight feet in length, the kiln is no small thing. Photos on her blog (gundastewart.blogspot.ca) show her crouched inside the firing area, carefully stacking a variety of pots to eventually fill the space. When the load is ready, she stacks bricks to close in the opening, then seals it up with a mix of newspapers and clay slurry. The kiln is designed with a number of small openings that are controlled by moving loose bricks in and out to control the movement of air during the firing. Wood is burned in the kiln’s firebox with pieces fed in through a door closer to eye level. Stewart wears heavy Kevlar gloves and a face shield to protect herself from the intense heat that greets her each time she fuels the fire. So what motivated her to set aside her electric kiln and begin firing her creations with wood? “You get tiny ash speckles in the glazes and marks on the clay from the flames, which I think is very cool,” she says. “Colours are unpredictable — not uncontrolled and random or serendipitous, but not the same each time. I know that certain things will happen in the kiln — usually. But the results are always slightly different, even from one spot in the kiln to another.” The unpredictability also pops up during the firing. Her eyes open wide as she interrupts the conversation to check an external pyrometer, a second way to monitor the temperature (the first being cones inside, that slump at specific temperatures). The pyrometer temperature has dropped to 900 C. She adds wood to the fire and it jumps to 1,100, then suddenly dips to 600. Wayne comes to the rescue, playing with the wires that run to sensors inside the kiln. They have become corroded and with a little cleaning the device’s accuracy is restored. She relaxes and is soon back into a rhythm of feeding the fire and standing back to cool off. “I love fire. I’m good at fire. I enjoy the process. And I like being out here. I like the peacefulness.”
Peterman Road evacuation alert lifted Advance Staff
With water levels no longer threatening homes, an evacuation alert for Peterman Road in West Creston was lifted on Friday, said a press release by Bill Macpherson, public information officer for the Regional District of Central Kootenay. Peterman Road, however, remains closed, and the alternate route off Smith Road, where traffic control remains in place, is being used. Residents should continue to be watchful around creeks, streams and their banks
during runoff, said the release. Last week, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers chose to exceed the normal water level behind Montana’s Libby Dam in an effort to reduce flooding impacts along the Kootenay River (Kootenai River in the U.S.) — which flows through Montana, Idaho and British Columbia — and Kootenay Lake. On July 2, the corps, which operates the dam, co-ordinated an action with BC Hydro to store additional water in Koocanusa Reservoir up to an elevation of 2,461 feet, said a press released by public affairs specialist A. Scott Lawrence. A similar co-ordi-
nation took place the week before. “This coordination to allow up to two feet above the normal maximum will enable the corps to maintain a lower release from Libby Dam than would otherwise be required,” explained the release. It was estimated that this would “reduce the river stage for the Kootenai River at Bonners Ferry by as much as 0.4 feet and the lake level at Kootenay Lake by as much as 0.1 feet compared to the operation that would occur if the maximum elevation was limited to 2,460 feet.” Last week, the elevation at Kootenay
What We Offer
A Cup of Coffee and a Second Opinion When the markets turn as volatile and confusing as they have over the past year, even the most patient investors may come to question the wisdom of the investment plan that they’ve been following. At Edward Jones, we’ve seen a lot of difficult markets come and go. And we can certainly empathize with people who find the current environment troublesome and disturbing. We’d like to help, if we can, and to that end, here’s what we offer: A cup of coffee, and a second opinion. By appointment, you’re welcome to come in and sit with us for a while. We’ll ask you to outline your financial goals—what your retirement and investment portfolios are intended to do for you. Then we’ll review the portfolio for and with you.
If we think your investments continue to be well-suited to your long term goals—in spite of the current market turmoil—we’ll gladly tell you so, and send you on your way. If, on the other hand, we think some of your investments no longer fit with your goals, we’ll explain why, in plain English. And, if you like, we’ll recommend some alternatives. Ringing cellphone leads RCMP to impaired driver BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Running from police when stopped is a bad idea that can be made worse by carrying a cellphone. A southbound pickup truck was stopped by patrolling police officers last Wednesday and the driver ran into trees on 16th Avenue North, RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. Police were searching the bushy area for the drinking and driving suspect when his cellphone rang, leading officers directly to the culprit. The male driver failed a roadside screening test for alcohol consumption and was issued an instant 90-day driving prohibition. His truck was impounded for 30 days.

Regional fire restrictions start Friday BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
The sudden hot summer temperatures have made cool, wet weather a distant memory and fire prevention is now in focus, Creston Fire Rescue Chief Bruce Mabin said on Monday. Games create sport tourism Black Press Since 1978, the BC Winter and BC Summer Games have been hosted in 38 different communities around the province. The BC Games have become part of the historical record of communities and for many, an honour and experience that has inspired them to build a vibrant sport tourism industry. Long before sport tourism was identified as an important part of the tourism industry, the Games were demonstrating the valuable impact of sport events. Besides the obvious economic benefits ($1.8 million to $2.6 million), the BC Games bring a community together, train leaders and create exposure and recognition opportunities. Sport tourism is growing at a consistently strong rate, despite the trends that have shown a declining tourism industry in recent years. According to the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance, spending associated with sport tourism in Canada reached $3.6 billion in 2010, an 8.8 per cent increase in two years. This continues sport tourism’s trend of being one of the fastest growing industry segments within Canada’s tourism industry. The number of B.C. communities becoming active in sport tourism continues to grow. The BC Games Society and Tourism BC co-manage HostingBC.ca, which provides a sport hosting portfolio for B.C. sport hosting destinations, including an inventory of sport facilities, sport hosting experience, photo galleries, maps, technical venue information, support services, and key contacts. “Strategically, hosting sport events can bring economic value, social benefits and civic pride to a community,” said Laura Plant, community partner-

Anyone who causes a wildfire through arson or recklessness can be fined up to $1 million or spend three years in prison and be held accountable for associated firefighting costs. Crews from the Southeast Fire Centre have responded to 21 wildfires since April 1 (20 caused by humans and one caused by lightning), which have burned a total of 290 hectares. With both of our sons and their families now living in Calgary we make the trip more often than ever, especially because Angela and I have siblings in the city and my mother also lives there. We are enjoying the new experience of staying in a brand new development in the southeast part of the city, watching it grow and change continually. Even better is the strange fact that Evan and Ryan have recently bought houses only about a block apart. When we arrive from the south on Highway 2 we are only minutes from our destination. Their homes are lovely, but more impressive is the sense of community that is already in place. The development is teeming with families — driving in the area means being hyper-aware of kids on skateboards and bikes, little ones dashing out from between parked cars and groups of children embroiled in one sort of game or another. But it would be a mistake to think that there is nothing else for them to do but play on the streets and sidewalks. Dotted throughout this mix of single-family dwellings and townhouses are an amazing number of parks, even more than the City of Calgary requires in a suburban development. Homeowners pay more than $450 annually toward the cost of maintaining and operating the park system. Included in that is access to a manmade freshwater lake stocked with fish and a clubhouse/recreation centre, large sandy beach, kayak and canoe access, splash park,
adventure playground and change rooms. On this first hot Saturday of the year, friends and family gathered at the park for our granddaughter’s third birthday. While the available
It is good to be aware of the circumstances that must come together if you are to develop a spiritual basis to your life through meditation and Zen training. By attending to the underpinnings that support you on the path, you can create and maintain a strong base for realizing your highest self in daily life. You can develop greater appreciation for your good fortune, and not take it for granted. At the same time, it is also good to remind yourself that many people do not have such good circumstances. To do so will prevent you from making the mistake of judging and criticizing others. If you recognize that people need support in order to live their lives on a spiritual basis, you can aspire to provide them with the same kind of support that has enabled you to develop spiritually. The first principal support for Zen training is a teacher, someone who has practiced and studied Zen for many years. You may have first heard about Zen and meditation through a book, a movie or from a friend, but no matter where you heard about it, if you trace it back, these teachings come from real live human beings, beginning with the Buddha himself in fourth century

have heard about the possibility of Zen training. The second principal cause is to understand the importance of meditation and Zen training. We all have the ability to work with our own minds; it is our natural capacity. But although all people have this capacity, few act on it. Recognizing that spiritual training is both possible and important, and acting on that recognition by working with a teacher and a community of practitioners, is the second strong support for practice. The third principal cause is to have adequate social and economic support for your practice. You need to be practical. It is extremely difficult to develop a spiritually focused
mind with an empty belly. Children and families need food, clothing, shelter and a loving home environment, and it is important to establish these conditions before starting a focused practice. Once you have worked to create the time and conditions for furthering your practice and undertaking Zen training, you can join with the first two causes, find a teacher and a community in which to train and make meditation and Zen practice the focus of your activities in daily life.
Suggested practice: What kinds of supports do you need to put in place to help strengthen your practice? Do you need more guidance from an experienced teacher? Do you need deeper confidence in your practice or commitment to training? Or do you need to develop a more stable social or economic base to support your practice? All three of these conditions are essential to Zen training. This column is a long series of short essays exploring the meaning of the Lojong Slogans. It is inspired by the work of Judy Lief. Internet gov’t the only way
To the Editor: I always enjoy reading Lorne Eckersley’s columns. “Our Broken Education System” (June 7 Advance, page 6) stirred me, though. I had given up on changing our system until I felt that people were ready to join the cause for real change. It was extremely difficult not to notice the sadness in the column, though, as if the writer was truly ready for anything that would give a glimmer of hope for a dying society. Leadership, it seems, has been lost to humanity in a time when it is desperately needed the most. The generation that controls the planet is more concerned about saving their portfolios rather than the water, air, food, education or health systems. Truly, we are at a crossroads in history. Rebecca Huscroft, a fellow Homelinks parent and School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) trustee, and her family are friends of ours. We had a chat about the cuts proposed at a recent school function and I felt for her, as the hatred that the town had shown her was clearly wearing on her. She knows my opinion about the situation as we have stood side by side when the district tried in vain to shut down our beautiful little school. But now she is on the other side of the fence and I guess the grass isn’t so green over there. Friends, please try to remember who the true enemy of Mother Earth and all of her citizens is: the Illuminati, the Bilderberg group, the Common Purpose, the One Per Cent, the shadow government. And don’t try to give me that crap that “they” don’t exist. If humankind has learned anything in the past four years, it should be the obvious. Pure evil is what they are. Their system is set up to keep us fighting amongst each other, chasing our tails, instead of dealing with them. We’re bogged down in bureaucracy, with funding cuts, dealing with paperwork instead of actual work, and jumping from one government department to the next without ever getting an answer to the simplest problems. Who do you think is responsible for this crappy society we live in? I guess we are, because we have not banded together to cast them into the pit of death, now have we? Although I do not share Lorne’s opinion about sending our taxes to Victoria to have them doled out by the coastals, I do believe that political change is desperately needed. I promote true democracy: leaderless, decentralized, direct democracy run on the Internet with a nationalized energy policy and banking system — complete and peaceful revolution so

that my children won’t have to worry about the air or water, the North American Union or the economy, and no concerns about getting ADHD from breakfast cereal, kidney and liver failure from genetically modified food or breast cancer from milk products. And if you think the Illuminati will be dictated to by the NDP, think again. Or do you really need to be reminded about the last time the NDP was in control of this province? Chamber must explain
To the Editor: In his June 7 column, Jim Jacobsen of the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce encouraged us to shop locally — a very understandable position. However, this contradicts what the Canadian Chamber of Commerce promotes while it is lobbying the federal government for free trade and more open borders. The Harper government has responded by increasing the purchasing limits in the U.S. it contradicts what the local chamber of commerce is asking Creston citizens to consider. It is incumbent on the Creston chamber of commerce to explain its position. Are you encouraging us to shop locally and/or do you support the increased competition and diversity by shopping in the U.S.? Come to think of it, this must be the same dilemma that Creston merchants face while they are shopping south of the line. Frank Orosz Creston
Moving closer to dictatorship
To the Editor: In my opinion, June 14 deserves to be called Black Thursday. That, of course, was the day — or more accurately, the night — when the Conservative majority in Canada’s House of Commons gave second reading to Bill C38, the Harper government’s budget legislation. Much has been made of the size of Bill C38, of the fact that it contained a multitude of provisions not normally proposed as part of a budget, and that was deplorable enough in itself. It meant that the House didn’t have time to debate each provision as much as it deserved.
It also meant, however, that ordinary Canadians did not have time to grasp the frightening implications of many of those provisions, to realize that Bill C38 was indeed a “slash and burn” document and, at the same time, a law that moved Canada uncomfortably close to dictatorship. On the one hand, the bill reduces or eliminates many existing federal-government functions and services, thereby making life harder for thousands, in some cases, millions, of ordinary Canadians. The changes to employment insurance are one example of that. On the other hand, Bill C38 gives the government power to ignore or overrule the decisions of commissions and tribunals that have been set up to guard against the abuse of government power or to limit the ability of such agencies to do their job properly. Here, the restrictions the bill places on the environmental assessment processes is a glaring case in point. The government defends all this on a perceived need to balance the federal budget, to make government more efficient and to help the economy provide more jobs. These are all commendable objectives but they do not require the draconian measures proposed in Bill funds for the measures C38. Indeed, raise in some cases, your group or employmay work against increased ment: firing thousands of public servants organization. and cutting public spending call dave to power is hardly likely toorganize increaseaemployment. No, what we have in Bill C38 is Bottle Drive nothing more nor less than a blueprint of Stephen Harper’s vision of ultraconservative government, which is to say, as little government as possible, conducted with as much secrecy and arbitrariness as possible. That Harper holds this vision will come as no surprise to those who have followed his political career. What does come as a shock, to me anyway, is that so many of his back-bench MPs on showed bycLosed their performance on Black Sat.they Juneshare 30 it. Thursday that Had a mere two dozen of them voted against Bill C38, or even abstained, it HaPPY would not have passed. Surely they cannot all havecanada been comfortable with the bill. Surely many of them must have daY! agreed with the Opposition MPs’ arguments and been aware of the considerable public uneasiness about the bill. Does party loyalty and or the pay and perceived prestige of sitting in the House mean so much to them? Whatever the case, although Harper must take the blame for assaulting our democracy, the “ trained seals” who sit on the benches behind him must bear the shame. And that’s really why it was Black Thursday. Peter Hepher Creston
Stop placing blame to create peace
Harvesting in the fields of Oklahoma with an all-Canadian crew, our young lad from Quebec spilled some grain on ground instead of filling the semi-trailer. He blamed himself for this misfortune. Out of the blue I told him, “Ledger, this is not your fault. We are a team. Whatever happens, it is nobody’s fault. We just put our heads and hands together, fix it and move on.” He was as surprised as I was. It was difficult for him to accept it. I reasoned with him that if there is a team, we are one in purpose, one in mission, one in accomplishing the task. We right the wrong, learn from each other, grow together. We learn how to fix things when something goes wrong. He was able to grasp this when we talked about basketball, his favourite sport, which he excelled in. Say, a player

Tattoo artist enjoys creative freedom
attoos are often associated with skulls or cherries or dice, and they can be simple or elaborate — but often generic. That’s not the case with Creston tattoo artist Gerry Eyre, who Story and goes above photos by and Brian Lawrence beyond, with many pieces looking like they’ve jumped off the sketchpad or canvas and onto a limb or torso. Detailed, and with fine lines, his work includes modern spins on traditional designs, as well as portraits
Eyre, who had long enjoyed art — “I’ve had a pencil in my hand since I was two years old,” he said — decided to attend Calgary’s Alberta College of Art, his brother saw an opportunity. “When I became a teenager and was going to art school, my brother and his friends were pushing me to get into it,” Eyre recalled. It took a while before Eyre made it happen. He moved back to Creston 14 years ago and worked in home support before apprenticing to become a tattoo artist, but never dreamed that it would turn into full-time work.
and more realistic images, much of it made possible with the wide range of colours available nowadays — he has a set of about 75. “The fine art side is way more incorporated,” Eyre said. But for Eyre, who grew up in a Christian household, it was the edginess of the eagle and flames associated with bikers’ tattoos that attracted him to the art. He did some drawings, which his brother showed to a Spokane, Wash., tattoo artist, who was suitably impressed. When the Creston-raised
Six years later, it has, and he’s built up a clientele from as far away as Fort McMurray, Alta. Between one-third and one-half of his clients are from out of town, thanks to the publicity from social networking — when one client posted a picture of her tattoo on Facebook, Eyre had nearly a dozen calls over the next week. Of course, time is of the essence for out-oftown clients, which can make for some very extended sessions — over the course of two days, a Kelowna man spent 19.5 hours in Eyre`s studio.
While bikers are a tattoo artist’s stereotypical clientele, that is no longer the case. “I have done tattoos on teachers, doctors, lawyers — people you don’t normally think of getting tattoos,” he said. Clients have ranged in age from 16 to 75, and come for a variety of reasons: to mark a milestone, create a memorial or simply have Eyre’s artwork on their body. Unlike many tattoo parlours, Eyre doesn’t simply copy stock images — known as flash — onto new clients. He designs each tattoo from scratch, with the help of his customers. “Everything is all custom work and one-offs,” he said. “I don’t mind people bringing in reference work, but I always try to put a different twist on it. “If someone wants something a certain way, even if it isn’t my vision, I’ll accommodate them. I try to visually communicate what they’re thinking.” That’s been Eyre’s goal from day one. “Even that first year, I was overwhelmed with how many people trusted me to do what they wanted,” he said. He noted, however, that he had to do many retouches to his work that year, and still does a couple each year — customer satisfaction is key, so he’s happy to touch things up. And he’s passing on his love of the art — his teenaged son, Skylar, is also an accomplished artist, who has done some tattooing himself — at the same time as he’s giving customers a one-of-a-kind experience that will last a lifetime. “People give me a lot of creative freedom,” he said. “To be able to use my art to help someone express something is great, for sure.”
Tattoo artist Gerry Eyre works on a customer’s “sleeve”.

Benches were added around the terrace’s perimeter, and a set of doors designed by David Johnston to fit in with the existing architecture allow access from the hall. Next up is a $12,000 upgrade to hall’s water system — taking water from Kootenay Lake no longer meets provincial regulations. Fundraising is already underway for the project, allowing it to remain a vital part of a unique community. “Gray Creek is a very special place,” said Schweiger. “I don’t know what it is, but for some, it’s very spiritual. They feel a very strong connection to the place.”

Over the past 100 years, the Gray Creek Hall has seen everything: christenings, funerals, weddings, birthdays, reunions, church services — the list is nearly endless, a sure sign of the hall’s importance to the community. Built on wooded land deemed useless by the area’s orchardists, the hall overlooks its clothing-optional beach, with Pilot Peninsula and Kootenay Lake beyond. “The place fills your eyes and your mind,” said Janet Schweiger, treasurer of the Gray Creek Hall Society. “You have ties between the old and new all the time.” The hall’s 100th anniversary will be celebrated during the Gray Creek Historical Society’s Museum Days from July 27-30, where visitors can learn about the hall’s history through a special display of stories and photos. Built — as with Schweiger’s North Woven Broom Co. in Crawford Bay — of logs from trees charred in an 1883 fire, it was constructed in 1912 to become a multipurpose community hall and schoolhouse, with funds raised by

It continued as a schoolhouse until 1944, when students began to be bused to Crawford Bay. Lymbery’s family has been involved from the hall’s early days; his mom was the school board secretary, and even spearheaded the addition of the kitchen in 1930. She told Lymbery that his and his sister’s footprints are all over the hall’s ceiling — they kept running across the plywood panels while she was applying finish.

A small circular window in the kitchen door was used by the Crawford Bay film group, which showed weekly movies in the 1970s. And as the most rented hall on East Shore, it is regularly used for wedding by out-of-town couples. “Young people have come from the city and discovered this place and say, ‘We want to get married in Gray Creek Hall,’ ” said Schweiger. There have been many changes made over the years, beyond the aforementioned kitchen addition. In 1958, workers tunneled under the building to put in a cement foundation, and that same year, a stage was added in celebration of B.C.’s centennial; the back wall of the stage features a stained glass window donated by Lymbery’s father, Arthur. A terrace was added in the 1990s,

T-Cats sign a local BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Another local player has signed to play with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats for the 2012-2013 season, joining Creston player Colby Livingstone, who signed in May. Matthew Sonntag, 17, a defenceman, will play for the Thunder Cats full-time, after spending last season as an affiliate player, a position that allowed him to play two games. “It was a big change from what I’m used to,” he said. “The intensity picks up. It’s a bigger rush.” Since he started playing hockey at age seven, Sonntag has advanced a lot, playing for the Creston rep team for the last few years. Now, he’s looking forward to playing Junior B hockey in his hometown. “It’s nice because I’ll have everyone watching me,” he said. The team’s staff is also pleased to have him aboard — they got a good look at what he’s capable of during his weekly practices with the Thunder Cats. “He got better and better as the year developed,” said assistant coach Garth Ludwar.

Melodrama kicks Rambling Dan returns off Footlighters’ to Snoring Sasquatch 18th theatre season SUBMITTED
FOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY
Following in a long tradition of presenting a melodrama each summer, Footlighters Theatre Society will return to the Prince Charles Theatre on July 20 and 21 with Someone Save My Baby, Ruth. “These shows are audience favourites, said Footlighters president Brian Lawrence, who is directing the play. “While the plots always have a new twist, the interaction between the stock characters — hero and heroine, villain and villainess — makes a melodrama so much fun. In this summer’s melodrama, Jordan Koop and Marybeth Stenhouse star, respectively, as Ernest Noble, a police officer, and Penny Candy, a recent widow who brings her baby, Ruth, to live with her aunt, Praline Candy (Susan Jorgensen), owner of the Sweet Shoppe. Their paths cross with villain Sidney Swindle (Jason Smith), who wants to tear down the Sweet Shop, and Ada Sourball (Simone Wiebe), Swindle’s well-meaning accomplice. The Sweet Shoppe is a busy place, with candy cook Farron Heit (Morgan Benty) and Cindy Grade (Suzanne Chubb) constantly duelling with words, music and, naturally, kitchen utensils. Shop assistants Taffy (Zoe Marini) and Toffee (Anjali Ewing) are kept busy waiting on Mrs. Murphy (Jasmine Lothien) and her daughter, Minnie (Jesika Troughton), as well as
Tom (Greg Benty) and Hubert (Axel Marini), who are desperately trying to sneak kisses — and not the chocolate kind, much to Taffy and Toffee’s annoyance. “I’ve really enjoyed working with this cast, said Lawrence. “Between them, there is so much talent and experience — they’ve all been in prior Footlighters productions — and it’s exciting to see them playing off one another. Tickets for Someone Save My Baby, Ruth, which runs at 7:30 p.m. July 20 and 21, are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors, available at Black Bear Books, Kingfisher Used Books and at the door. Someone Save My Baby, Ruth is the first show of Footlighters’ 18th season, and will be followed by two one-act fractured fairy tales (Big Bad — featuring the Big Bad Wolf on trial — and a title to be announced) from Nov. 29-Dec. 1 and, in the spring, the Tony Award-winning musical Annie, a joint production with Adam Robertson Elementary School. Among the productions being considered for the 2013-14 and 201415 seasons are two summer melodramas, a concert featuring songs from Broadway and movie musicals, the farce Arsenic and Old Lace, a locallywritten Cinderella, and Walt Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. For more information, contact Brian Lawrence at editor@creston valleyadvance.ca or visit www.face book.com/CrestonFootlighters.w
Armed with a harmonica and any number of instruments, Rambling Dan Frechette performs with passion and strong conviction, and he returns to the Snoring Sasquatch on July 19. Frechette has crafted a wide variety of songs in many acoustic based genres for many years in the prairie cities of Winnipeg and Pinawa, Man. His music conjures the many eras and histories of popular song before his birth 35 years ago. His abilities as a performer and a self-taught multi-instrumentalist add a multifaceted essence to his songwriting. His voice harkens to the sound of edgy Americana and the storied history of the past starting from 40 years ago. He is known as an excellent interpreter of timeless classics and not so well known songs from the past. Frechette is also an excellent mimic, able to conjure close impressions of many different well known artists even sometimes all within the same song. Frechette has been recording all fall and winter and has compiled some of his 1,500 original compositions into
separate genre albums including bluegrass, blues and folk. “The tour is going to be a lot of fun,â€? he said. “I plan to break the sets up into quarter sections so I’m changing gears during each set into a different genre. ‌ I love playing intimate venues because the people like to get to know an artist
who can play all kinds of music. I do a pretty mean Dylan impression, too. For more information, visit w w w. r a m b l i n g d a n . c o m . Tickets are $10 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, and $12 at the door. The doors open at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8.

Hunger and malnutrition undermine all other humanitarian and development goals. According to the World Food Program every child whose physical and mental development is stunted by hunger and malnutrition stands to lose 5% to 10% in lifetime earnings. WISE BUYERS READ THE LEGAL COPY: Vehicle(s) may be shown with optional equipment. Dealer may sell or lease for less. Limited time offers. Offers may be cancelled at any time without notice. Dealer order or transfer may be required as inventory may vary by dealer. See your Ford Dealer for complete details or call the Ford Customer Relationship Centre at 1-800-565-3673. ‡Ford Employee Pricing (“Employee Pricing”) is available from June 14, 2012 to August 31, 2012 (the “Program Period”), on the purchase or lease of most new 2012/2013 Ford vehicles (excluding all chassis cab and cutaway body models, F-150 Raptor, Medium Trucks, Mustang Boss 302, and 2013 Shelby GT500). Employee Pricing refers to A-Plan pricing ordinarily available to Ford of Canada employees (excluding any CAW-negotiated programs). The new vehicle must be delivered or factory-ordered during the Program Period from your participating Ford Dealer. This offer can be used in conjunction with most retail consumer offers made available by Ford at either the time of factory order or delivery, but not both. Employee Pricing is not combinable with CPA, GPC, CFIP, Daily Rental Allowance and A/X/Z/D/F-Plan programs. ‡‡No purchase necessary. For full contest rules, eligible vehicle criteria, and to enter as a Ford owner, visit www.ford.ca/shareourpridecontest (follow the entry path applicable to you, complete all mandatory fields and click on ‘submit’) or visit your local Ford Dealer for details. Open only to residents of Canada who have reached the age of majority, possess a valid graduated level provincially issued driver’s license, and are owners of Ford branded vehicles (excluding fleet customers and all Lincoln and Mercury models). Eligible vehicle criteria includes requirement that it be properly registered in Canada in the contest entrant’s name (matching vehicle ownership), and properly registered/plated and insured. Non-Ford owners can enter by mailing an original 100 word essay on “what they like about Ford”, with their full name, full mailing address, email, daytime phone number (with area code) to: Vanessa Richard, Pareto Corp., 1 Concorde Gate, Suite 200, Toronto, ON, M3C 4G4. Contest closes at 11:59pm (PST) on the last day of the 2012 Ford Employee Pricing campaign which will be no earlier than August 31, 2012. Limit of 1 entry per person. Up to 8 prizes available to be won in Canada in 3 possible prize categories, each worth up to CAD$50,000. Chances of winning are dependent on the total number of entries received up to each 10,000 interval of unit sales under the Employee Pricing campaign (“Draw Trigger”). Odds of winning decrease as the contest progresses, more entries are made into the contest, and opportunities for Draw Triggers lessen. Obituaries Rod Nerbas
November 1, 1936 ~ July 3, 2012 “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints‌â€? Rod Nerbas passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at the Claresholm General Hospital after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 75 years. Rod was born in MacNutt, Saskatchewan in 1936. He and Alberta met in Hinton, Alberta and were married in 1962. Rod obtained his Certiďƒžed Management Accountant designation by correspondence while balancing a full time job and a young family. His career took the family to Kitimat and Prince Rupert, BC and then ďƒžnally to Fort McMurray, Alberta where he worked until his retirement in 1992. Rod and Alberta retired in the Creston valley; a place Rod had always loved. In 2005, they moved to Claresholm to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Rod was a quiet, unassuming individual. He loved spending time with his family and was known and appreciated for his wry sense of humour. He loved sports and over his lifetime excelled at baseball, hockey, golf, and curling. He also had a creative side and enjoyed painting and playing the guitar. Retirement years gave Rod time to enjoy his love of golf and gardening. He gave unselďƒžshly of his time to many and varied organizations and charities. Rod was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Rod was the only child of John and Lena Nerbas, who predeceased him in 1991 and 1997, respectively. He leaves to mourn his passing and celebrate his life, Alberta, his beloved wife of 50 years; four children, Laurel (Kevin), Michael (Liana), Tim (Kim), and Anita (Ryan); eight grandchildren, Curtis, Eric, Jeffrey, Scott, Leah, Kate, Sean, and Abbey; and his faithful dog Lily. Funeral Services were held at Faith Community Baptist Church on Saturday, July 7, 2012 with Reverend Art Hildebrand ofďƒžciating. In lieu of ďƒ&#x;owers, donations to the Claresholm and District Health Foundation, Box 2638, Claresholm, AB, T0L 0T0 would be appreciated. Condolences may be forwarded to the family by visiting www.leydens.com. Arrangements entrusted to LEYDEN’S FUNERAL HOME 4079 – 1 St West, Claresholm Tel: 1-403-625-3212
