Pooch slipped collar, missing since dog show

A winning pooch in this month’s Nicola Valley Kennel Club Dog Show slipped his collar and went missing during the Merritt Canada Day fireworks. Kody, a one-year-old flashy brindle boxer, broke loose after hearing the loud bangs. “They were taking him out to go to the bathroom and he slipped out,” said co-owner Karen Knox, who returned to her home in Surrey while a team of volunteers including her husband, the dog’s other owner and members of the NVKC continued the search. “They are still out there looking,” she said on Tuesday. “They’re doing everything they can think of.” Wayne McMurray, the dog’s other owner, was returning home to Kelowna on Tuesday after 10 days of steady searching. “We are heading back to Kelowna right now,” he said in a phone interview. “We put food out for him and his bed and articles of clothing to lure him back, but there’s been no sign of him.” McMurray stayed at the Ramada Inn during the nights and searched Merritt and its outskirts each day.

Owners who were in town for the Nicola Valley Kennel Club Dog Show are asking locals to keep an eye out for their dog. Submitted

During his stay, there was one possible sighting on a logging road near River Ranch. “We’ve saturated the Merritt area,” he said. “He could still be in there but I’m kinda doubtful on that. He could have been picked up, but if enough people know about it, there’s still a chance [to find him].” Nicola Valley Kennel Club Secretary-Treasurer

Lori Jacobson and two other volunteers from NVKC are still on the prowl. “We’ll continue the search until we find him,” she said, noting he is likely continually walking in and out of town. “I think he’s pretty terrified. Boxers are skittish, anyway, so unless someone has a leash and collar when they see him, he would be very hard to

retrieve.” The team has informed those who frequent the roads, such as truck drivers, about the missing dog. She said the search party has recently received tips about the dog’s location. “We are out in the middle of the night searching,” she said. “We’re grasping at straws at this point and we’re

getting pretty tired.” Posters and a notice on a rescue mailing list are also part of search efforts. The Nicola Valley Kennel Club show ran for three days at Voght Park from June 29 to July 1. Kody won first place in the boxer competition. Anyone with information about Kody’s whereabouts is asked to call Karen at 778-688-0564.

Colorado, Siberia fires caused Merritt haze The haze which settled over the Nicola Valley and Kamloops last Friday will likely be visible until the end of this week. Kamloops fire information officer Kevin Skrepnek said the haze, which settled over the area this past weekend, is a mix of smoke from wildfires in the U.S. and Russia. “A lot of it is from the Colorado wildfires that have

been burning for quite some time. “But, believe it or not, a big chunk of it, based on the weather models we’re looking at, is from Siberia,” he said. “There’s some pretty significant fires going on over there and it looks like the smoke and haze got caught in a jet stream that came over the Pacific and settled right down in some of

New Patients Welcome

our valleys.” The haze is expected to hang around until Friday, Skrepnek said, but that will depend somewhat on weather conditions. Whether the fires continue to burn won’t affect air quality, however. “This haze could be from burning that happened a week ago and it’s just taken its time to get here,” Skrepnek said.

Skrepnek said he’s heard reports the smoke has also moved into Alberta. Skrepnek said the heavier concentrations of haze and smoke seen over the weekend were probably the result of a warm mass of air that formed over top of the smoke, trapping it in the city’s valley bottoms. Two projects get tax exemption The City of Merritt is expected to see over $1.9 million in construction development this year with the approval of two major projects under the Revitalization Tax Exemption Bylaw. Aimed at rewarding new development, the bylaw was approved unanimously by city councillors in January. The bylaw offers a

tax incentive to both new businesses and expansions to existing businesses by phasing in taxation over a four-year period. “The bylaw is designed to support a partnership with business and developments and provide the ‘tipping point’ for new construction and development of projects throughout the community,” Merritt Economic Development Manager James Umpherson said. “The Revitalization Tax Exemption Bylaw has achieved exactly what it was intended to do for development.”

HERALD OPINION Ideas for stronger Canada abound My summer listening tour is once again proving to be very valuable in allowing me to hear concerns from many of the taxpayers in our beautiful Okanagan-Coquihalla region. I am often surprised that what I hear in coffee shops, at community events and BBQ’s, is often very different from the issues in the media or on the local letters to the editor page. Often I find that issues of importance to taxpayers may be ones that the government is taking action on in Ottawa, however we may not have communicated that very well. In other cases there are some bills that generate far more media and opposition attention than others. One area of concern that I frequently hear about pertains to the pay and the expenses for politicians in local, provincial, federal and aboriginal government including a desire for more transparency and accountability. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation publicly posted information regarding aboriginal politicians that included 50 earning more than the prime minister, 160 more than a respective provincial premier and over 600 in excess of $100,000 per year or more. Much of this information was acquired with significant difficulty. As a result our government introduced Bill C-27, the First Nations Financial Transparency Act. The intent of this legislation is to provide public disclosure by requiring chiefs and councillors to publish salaries and expenses as well as the audited consolidated financial statements for the First Nation in question. While some First Nations governments do provide this information, others currently do not and there can be a lack of consistency in how this information is posted. Bill C-27 is currently at committee stage review as part of the second reading debate. Another bill that you may not have heard about is Bill C-43, the Faster Removal of Foreign Criminals Act. It is well known that Canada has one of the most generous immigration systems in the world. By the same theme, it is also one of the easiest to manipulate by

Remove temptation, create left turn lane JADE SWARTZBERG Merritt HERALD I’ve obviously been in Merritt for a while now — my airway starts to constrict and my hands clench the steering wheel when I have more than a three-car wait to cross the intersection at

Voght Street and Nicola Avenue. A few deeps breaths will usually do the trick, except when the traffic is backed up to the A&W like it was a few weeks ago as I headed for this “busy” intersection around lunchtime. At first I couldn’t figure out why the traffic had come to a standstill, but then, as we inched closer, I realized we had a situation where many of the cars ahead of me were trying to turn left. There was nothing I could do but wait my

turn and watch as the light cycled from green to yellow to red several times before it was my turn to drive straight through this crossroad. Last year I proposed a permanent one-way road from Voght Street to Coldwater (like the temporary set up they have going right now for the bike rally) but perhaps a slightly less drastic approach could solve some of our traffic congestion problems around Merritt’s main artery — a left turn lane on either side of Voght Street as

there is on Nicola. I realize some readers may be rolling their eyes at my mention of traffic troubles but, my own impatience aside, other Merritt drivers have adopted some dangerous methods to deal with their impatience and to cross the intersection quicker. Instead of waiting their turn behind vehicles with flashing left turn indicators, these drivers overtake them on the right and cross through the intersection. This is all very well

when the road is otherwise empty, but when there is someone else on the verge of turning left from the opposite side of the intersection, this impatient manoeuvre could lead to a collision. I say, remove the temptation. Provide a way for left-turners to queue in their very own lane so that those driving straight or turning right will not have to wait. Traffic will flow smoothly and less people will experience anxiety when driving towards Merritt’s downtown core.

From Page 6 criminals on account of the virtually endless appeals that allow criminals to delay deportation by many years. As an example, one foreign criminal who sexually assaulted a senior was able to delay the deportation process for close to four years. In another example a foreign criminal convicted of trafficking drugs and assaulting victims with a dangerous weapon along with other offences took close to six years to deport. This proposed bill will allow the deportation of criminals in a far timelier manner and will help to ensure that Canadians can be better protected. Bill C-42 is by contrast legislation that many citizens have commented on the need for. This is the Enhancing Royal Canadian Mounted Police Accountability Act. It is important to recognize that the majority of our RCMP do an outstanding job in keeping our communities safe. However, in any organization you can find those few who do not meet the expectations and standards. To date, the RCMP has not always had the administrative ability to deal with these officers in an expedient or appropriate manner. Bill C-42 proposes new legislation to rectify these challenges and also proposes to create a modern and independent civilian review and complaints commission. The above bills are part of the 43 introduced by our government so far in this 41st Parliament in response to hearing the concerns from Canadian taxpayers and the need to keep Canada strong. Aside from these 43 government bills, there are also in excess of 240 private members bills currently proposed along with just over a dozen from the Senate. When it comes to bills and legislation, there is no shortage of ideas and debate from your elected representatives. When I am on my listening tour throughout the riding, I too learn and become aware about a number of local issues that have a Federal component. Suggestions and ideas on how we can create more opportunity, employment and understanding are many particularly in our riding of Okanagan-Coquihalla. NICOLA VALLEY NEWS

Merritt to host talent contest By Jade Swartzberg THE HERALD

newsroom@merrittherald.com

If you’ve ever watched Canada’s Got Talent or American Idol and dreamed of having your chance in the spotlight, you might want to sign up for Clash of the Talents — Merritt’s summer talent contest. Designed to showcase a variety of local talent, the six-week competition, which will kick off on July 28 in Spirit Square, is open to any resident of the Nicola Valley. “There are so many people in Merritt that are talented and this gives them an opportunity to show their talents,” said Christine Abraria who is organizing the event along with her husband Anthony. If the potential for fame doesn’t motivate those with hidden talents, then perhaps the cash prizes will. Christine confirmed last Wednesday that first place will receive $1,700, while second place will earn $850 and third will earn $450. The city-funded competition will be broken down into four rounds — with the first two rounds broken up into two separate heats. Twenty performers will advance to the second round, 10 to the semifinals and five to the final show, which will be a ‘scaled up’ production at the Merritt Civic Centre on Sept. 1. Young and old are welcome to participate in the competition, which will feature any talent from ballet to comedy to singing and instrumentals. “Merritt has held a Battle of the Bands before, but we wanted to find a way that anyone could be included,” said Christine, adding that the interest seems to be there. Before the Abrarias submitted their proposal to the City of Merritt, they decided to do a bit of market research and posted

‘I’ve seen lots of talented people in the community, so I know they are out there.’ —CLASH OF TALENTS ORGANIZER CHRISTINE ABRARIA

their idea on Facebook. Within 12 hours of the post, 10 people had already expressed their interest in competing. Still, Christine says they were hesitant at first about submitting the proposal — both she and Anthony are 26 years old and they have a 17-month-old daughter Emerald. On top of that, Anthony owns his own homebased web development and marking company called BurstInto-Site, which he started in fall 2011. In the end though, their passion for the community won out. “I was born in Merritt and Anthony has been here since he was eight, so our passion is there and our

roots go way back,” said Christine, a descendent of William Voght. “I’ve seen lots of talented people in the community, so I know they are out there.” After each show, which will be at venues around the city including Spirit Square and Rotary Park, the audience will be able to vote for their favourite act. The contest will be based solely on these votes and there won’t be any judges. Up to 40 people will be able to participate in Clash of the Talents and if the applications exceed this number, organizers will hold an audition on July 25th at the Merritt Civic Centre.

Those interested in sharing their talents can pick up applications at Drop Dead Threadz on Quilchena Avenue, or download a PDF from the City of Merritt website www. merritt.ca. Christine and Anthony will also have a booth downtown during the Great Canadian Bike Rally (July 12-15) and the Chamber of Commerce Street Fest (July 20-21) where people can pick up applications or get more information. The registration deadline will be 6 p.m. on July 21. The Abrarias (who are also the organizers of the Merritt Cash Mobs, an initiative aimed to encourage people to shop locally) would also like to provide an opportunity for local businesses to set up a booth at each show to tell and market their products.

Friends & Neighbours Man volunteers time to alleyways By Phillip Woolgar THE HERALD

reporter@merrittherald.com

All it takes is a little effort from each person in the community to give a neighbourhood a homey feeling, but one man is going all out, whacking away grass from Merritt’s alleys almost every day. Since spring Steve Thomas has grabbed his weed whacker and has taken on the task of ridding the alleyways of tall grass. “As soon as the snow was off the ground, I was out there,” he said. “It just gives me a good feeling, to get something accomplished.” His neighbours have taken notice and they appreciate his effort. “A few of the senior women offer me a beer every once in a while,” he mentioned. Thomas is waiting for the grass to spread out far enough so he can use a lawnmower. That would make the job much easier, as the one alleyway

alone extends several blocks. He lives near the alley between Jackson and Coldwater Avenue from Houston to Blair Street where he frequently chops the grass. “I also got started on one behind Menzies Street over there around Douglas Street,” he said. Thomas has lived in Merritt since 1994, after he was injured when he he hit a moose with his vehicle. “She landed on top of my car and busted my neck and my back. “I was laid up for so many years and people helped me all the time,” he explained. “I thought now is the time to give back to someone else. I get a sense of paying it forward.” Thomas used to operate heavy machinery at Similco Mines near Princeton before retiring. “The only real exercise I get is doing this,” he said. “My grandkids take up a good portion of my time too.”

Notice of Field Studies For the Proposed Trans Mountain Expansion Project Teams have begun the field program related to the proposed Trans Mountain Expansion project. This field work is taking place along the pipeline corridor. It will gather information, as a first step, to support routing and environmental studies for the proposed project. These studies will be used in the preparation of Kinder Morgan Canada’s facilities application which is expected to be filed with the National Energy Board in late 2013. Field studies began in June 2012 and will continue throughout 2012 and 2013 field seasons. The timing and nature of this field work will be subject to change depending on the weather and time of day. The work includes: Wildlife and bird surveys Fish and fish habitat assessments Soil and vegetation identification Noise and air quality studies Forestry health review Archaeology field studies Traditional knowledge studies Route feasibility assessments We are committed to a thorough and open engagement program about the proposed Trans Mountain Expansion Project. Wedding bells without wedding bills DAVID L. BROWN Managing YOUR MONEY Love may be in the air but sooner or later someone has to pay the bills. Here are some simple strategies for enjoying a debt-free wedding day and a financially equal life with your life partner. Wedding = one day; your life together = a lifetime Who doesn’t want a terrific wedding? But you really need to look beyond the confetti and those tinkling glasses to your long-term financial life. Plan for a happy wedding but within a reasonable, affordable budget. Use the wedding budget process as

Wedding costs = real money Pay for your wedding with money you’ve saved instead of through credit cards or ‘stealing’ from your investments or retirement fund or you’ll end up paying for your wedding over and over again for many years. For example, put $25,000 in wedding expenses on your credit card at 14% interest and only make the minimum payment each month and it’ll take you 100 years to pay it off! Financial plan = stick to it Set a wedding budget based on the money you’ll have at the time and start saving right away! While you’re at it, set other financial goals like accumulating a down payment for a

Along with the slew of thundering motorbikes expected to rumble into the Nicola Valley for the Great Canadian Bike Rally from Thursday to Sunday will be a lineup of entertainment that could rival the acts of Mountainfest. Entertainment Co-ordinator Stuart Emslie said many of the scheduled bands treat the bike rally as a reunion. “It’s such a great mix of B.C. musicians that know each other and they really had a great time with it last year and are looking forward to much of the same this year, he said. “They love the cause, they love the idea of what the organizers of the bike rally are trying to build. Approximately 30 bands are scheduled to perform, including several that were rained out last year. The weather caused organizers to replace a soundboard valued at approximately $250,000. “This year is bigger crews, more production, more people, more backline, more everything, Emslie said. “There are some exciting additions this year. A new feature includes three cameras on the main stage, with one from the drum kit facing the audience. The image will be projected on a massive screen. Burnout demonstrations are also planned during the main stage show in the City

Furniture parking lot. Two stages are added this year, one at Spirit Square on Granite Avenue and the other at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena on Mamette Avenue. Jam areas for anyone attending are also near Spirit Square. The square will also feature John Lee Sanders on Sunday. “This guy has played with Dr. John, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters; he’s played with some of the biggest names in the business, Emslie said. “He toured 11 years with Long John Baldry. “That’s going to be my highlight of the week, I think. I’m really looking forward to that particular show. Tony Robertson and Hogwash are hosting an all-star jam at the Nicola Valley Memorial Arena during the After Party on Friday night. “It’s going to turn into a wonderful, incredible musical soup, Emslie said.

“And then on Saturday we have my favourite party band. Brickhouse is hosting the Saturday night all-star jam with John Lee Sanders and Steve Kozak. Approximately 5,000 people attended the bike rally last year and organizers said they wouldn’t be surprised at a 15,000 attendance this year. “It’s a great event and quite well organized, Emslie said. “These guys put a year into [planning]. It’s a bike rally first, that also offers some great entertainment. He said the rally is key to the event’s success because prices can stay low and the rally becomes more family oriented. Thursday’s lineup includes Harlequin, Wild T and the Spirit, David Gogo, Arsen Shomakov, March Hare and others. The Friday lineup includes Streetheart, Henry Small, Brickhouse, Cannery Row, Hogwash,

Shotgun Messengers and more. Saturday features Jerry Ducette, John Lee Sanders, Stever Kozak and the West Coast All Stars, Joanni Bye and the Homewreckers and more. Other bands throughout the weekend include Fowl Mouth Mcphee, Darryl Weyman and his Johnny Cash Tribute and the ultimate Deep Purple Tribute, Highway Star. Blues Brothers Too will stop at random locations and start singing. A three-night concert pass costs $100 or pay $40 for one night. A combination of the events and tickets pass for four days costs $190. A ticket for each night of the After Party costs $20. The weather should cooperate with the shows, as Environment Canada forecasts Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday are all clear with temperatures in the low 30

The basics of tension, or stress, headaches DR. COLIN GAGE Spinal COLUMN Tension-type headaches, or tension headaches, are the most common type of headache. About 30 per cent to 80 per cent of adults occasionally experience this kind of headache. Tension headaches are more common among women than

men. These headaches are sometimes also called stress headaches, muscle contraction headaches, daily headaches, or chronic non-progressive headaches. There is no single cause for tension headaches. This type of headache is not an inherited trait that runs in families. In most people, tension headaches are caused by irritated joints and tightened muscles in the back of the neck and scalp. Tension headaches can also be triggered by some type of physi-

cal or emotional stress. The most common sources of emotional stress include family, social relationships, friends, work and school. Physical forms of stress include heavy or repetitive lifting and poor posture. In mild to moderate tension headaches, there is a constant, band-like pain or pressure around the head and neck that lasts from 30 minutes to all day. Tension headaches tend to be moderate or mild and are rarely severe. Unlike migraines they are not usually unilateral, throbbing

or associated with light and sound sensitivity or nausea and vomiting. Other features of tension headaches may include: • Headache upon awakening • General muscle aches • Difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep • Chronic fatigue • Irritability • Disturbed concentration • Mild sensitivity to light or noise • Occasional dizziness How do you get rid of these tension

headaches? I always say that one should treat the “cause” of the problem, not just the “symptoms”. Thus, as a chiropractor, I believe that it is my job to identify and correct the problems in the joints and muscles of the neck that are likely causing the headache symptoms in the first place. If your neck is the primary cause of your headaches, then it can usually be corrected by restoring the proper functioning of cervical joints and relieving the tension in the muscles. If you want to rid yourself of these headaches over the long

NARAYAN MITRA You Gotta Have FAITH “Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, in the feast day, many believed in His name, when they saw the miracles which He did. “But Jesus did not commit Himself unto them, because He knew all men, and needed not that any should testify of man; for He knew what was in man.” John 2:23-25. The above words form part of the record of a set of circumstances analogous to those in which we find ourselves at times – a large company gathered round about Christ, expressing their attitude to Him and revealing His responsive attitude to them. It is a singular fact that Christ has no faith

No person can long be insincere in the presence of Christ. Right through His life this quality of discrimination characterised Jesus. For instance, “Not everyone that says to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the Kingdom of heaven, but he that does the will of my Father in heaven.” Then again, “They brought young children to Him and the disciples would drive them back.” But Jesus rebuked not those who brought them, but those who would exclude them. There is no realm of our being in which this discriminating power of Christ is so entirely important, not only for our notice, but for our

obedience, and for the guidance of our moral and spiritual actions, as just here in the realm of faith. John, in his gospel account above, also talks about an “untrusted faith” – “but He did not commit Himself to them.” Why? It has been true in every age, and it is true essentially in our own present age, that there is in faith’s name a recrudescence of a curious seeking for signs. There are large numbers who will only believe in Jesus today if their faith can be somehow buttressed by some visible sign. Many among us tempt Him, asking signs from heaven which,

Christ discriminates in his dealings with people in some men’s faith. It is a startling consideration that many ‘believe’ in Him, while He has no belief in them. It is a strange and solemn truth in its implicate of warning to every one of us, that there is a faith to which He makes no response, a professed belief in the presence of which the Lord is strangely and significantly silent. The thing to be guarded against, not only in the present, but right along the whole of our pilgrim pathway, is that kind of so-called faith to which Jesus only responds by silence How discriminating Christ is and how characteristic this is of His entire dealings with men! He draws men, and then divides them. He wins men to a hearing of His message, and then winnows them. Jesus, wherever He is lifted up, draws all men to Him. And then each man as he comes finds himself at a judgment-seat.

term, then regular stretching and exercise is mandatory. As well, maintaining good posture is key. If you have any questions in regards to tension headaches, feel free to call my office directly.

when they are granted, have little, if anything, to identify them with the simplicity that is in Christ. When we know of God’s own children being led aside into believing that physical signs could be used to support faith, it is enough to make angels weep. Anything which elevates subjective experience above scriptural expression could cause the very elect. Let us beware of anything which tends to remove us from the simplicity that is in Jesus. LOGAN LAKE Have a story tip? Tell us about it by calling 250-378-4241 or emailing newsroom@merrittherald.com

See you later Barrie, hello Brennan BRENNAN LESSICK BRENNAN’S BANTER While Barrie is away, Brennan shall play! Truth be told I was having some difficulties finding anything to write about that was actually relevant this week. It seems people were just not willing to talk to the new guy. As this is my first story in The Merritt Herald I thought it might be nice to let you in on my life and tell you a little bit

about myself. I am currently 18, a fresh graduate of Logan Lake Secondary and eager to begin my life as an adult. While I was in High School I liked to take the sciences and avoided the maths. Two classes that I particularly excelled in were Biology and Geography — I have always said that these two classes have wrecked the way I looked at the world. No longer can I look at a flower and just think, “Oh, a pretty flower.” No, I see all the separate pieces, like the stamen or if it’s a mono-cot or a di-cot. I also played on a couple of the school teams such as the

badminton team and the basketball team. While I am happy to be done high school, I will surely miss it. During my free time I like to read, write and play video games. When my friends and I are together it’s usually at my house, in my room, being nerds. I enjoy being alone so I don’t see very much of the outside world; luckily for me I have found employment in Logan Lake. If you were to ask a Logan Laker what it’s like to find a job in town, they will say it’s quite a difficult task, and even more so for a teenager. I have been working at Highland Valley Foods for four years

now. Being only 18 the store has been a big part of my life, as I spent the majority of my afternoons and after school there. I swept the floors, stocked the shelves and cleaned the meat department. With the money I have saved up, and with some scholarships, I am sending myself to the Okanagan College in Kelowna. I will be going to O.K. for the fall semester, and taking the Writing and Publishing Diploma course. This is a two year program that will allow me to go into things such as journalism, marketing or even a publishing company as an editor. With that in mind,

you can only guess how excited I was when Barrie asked me if I would like to take her place for the summer, giving her a vacation. That’s me; again I am sorry for the slow week in Logan Lake, not much to report on. Although I hear with the recent heat wave that fishing has been a little slow, but still better than last year after the winter kill. Also with this heat remember to please wear some sun block and drink plenty of water. The sun is nice but can be quite dangerous if you are not careful. Have a good week and I promise I will have some news for next week!

ARE YOUR NEIGHBORS AFFECTING YOUR HOUSE VALUE? You have put your home up for sale and done everything your agent has advised you to do to prepare your property for sale, but still no offers have come in. If you suspect your neighbor’s property is preventing your home from appealing to potential buyers, there are a few things you can do to remedy this situation. Before banging down the neighbor’s door and blaming them for your home’s lack of appeal, you’ll Àrst want to make sure that is really the problem. Ask your Realtor what they think the problem is, and whether they agree that the neighbors may be preventing the sale. Also ask other homeowners in the area what they think of any problem neighbors to get perspective before making that visit. If you have determined that a particular neighbor is creating a problem that is affecting your home’s value and marketability, your best bet in getting them to agree to make the required changes is to be nice about it. Offer to help them with the cleanup and explain that it is not only for your beneÀt, but will also increase their home’s value as well. If you have asked nicely and your neighbor still refuses to clean their property, there are steps you can take to force the situation. Municipalities have bylaws concerning the upkeep of property, and getting your local ofÀcials involved may be necessary. Also getting other homeowners in the area on your side can make this easier. Remember though, you should always approach the individuals Àrst and ask nicely before reporting them to the authorities. Messy neighbors can be an obstacle to selling your home, but in most cases a little diplomacy and an offer to help will get the task accomplished. Serving Merritt & Logan Lake

Mair-Valin’s win a touch of sweet redemption By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

As Karen Mair-Valin of Kamloops put the finishing touches on her final round Sunday and a four-shot victory at this year’s Coquihalla Ladies’ Open, you have to think that the Kamloops’ golfer was feeling no small measure of vindication. After all, it was one year ago at the same tournament that MairValin had an apparent win taken away from her as a result of an inadvertent rules violation. On the first hole of a sudden-death playoff with Mary Lou Harkness from Oliver, Mair-Valin accidently played a drop ball incorrectly. Unfortunately, the mistake was not caught until after Mair-Valin had beaten Harkness on the second hole of the playoff, and the Eagle Point golfer had already been announced as the winner. After considerable discussion, the result was changed, Harkness was declared the victor, and Mair-Valin was left to ruminate on what might have been. “I just wanted to correct the error I made last year,” stated Mair-Valin of this year’s winning performance. “I should have known the rule. I was just so nervous at the time that I drew a blank. I came this year with

an open mind, and told myself, ‘You know what, Karen, you’ve learned your lesson, now move on’.” And move on she did. Mair-Valin’s performance on Saturday and Sunday at the Merritt Golf & Country Club was nothing less than outstanding. Battling a scorching hot sun and temperatures in excess of 35ºC, the fifteen-year veteran of the Merritt ladies’ event kept her cool, shooting rounds of 81 and 80 for a final score of 161, four better than clubmate Jayna Mikuse and Maryanne Skowronski from Pineridge GC in Kamloops. “Because of the heat, I was really, really happy with my two days,” said Mair-Valin. “It actually wasn’t too bad until the last four holes each day. Fortunately, I had an umbrella and I drank tons of water.” This year’s victory was Mair-Valin’s third at the Coquihalla Open, a tournament that she loves to attend. “I go to a lot of tournaments,“ she said, “and it is truly one of the best. The people in Merritt treat you fabulously, and the staff at the course are great.” Happy as she was about her win this year, Mair-Valin was equally thrilled about the success of her close

friend, Mikuse. The fellow Kamloopsian not only finished in a tie for second in her very first tournament but potted a hole-in-one on Saturday on the par-3 #5 hole. “She [Jayna] was just going to Merritt to see what a tournament was like,” explained MairValin. “We were lucky enough to golf together on Saturday. Watching that hole-in-one was just too much fun. It was awesome.” Mikuse, for her part, was equally shocked by her weekend success. “I’ve only been playing golf for three years. I certainly wasn’t expecting to do well, but I really like the course, and I’d much rather the heat than the cold.” Just as surprised by her own play at this year’s Coquihalla Open was Merritt’s Jude Schaefer. The 26-handicapper shot a lights-out 81 on Saturday (16 strokes better than her previous best on the MGCC course) to run away with the low net title for the tournament. “I don’t know who that was out there, but it sure wasn’t me,” said Schaefer laughingly in reference to her effort on the first day of the competition. A total of 68 golfers from throughout southern B.C. took part in this year’s Coquihalla Open.

Centennials’ first annual charity golf tournament set for this Friday It’s not too late to sign up; proceeds to Ronald McDonald House

Merritt’s very own Peyton Schaefer (above) will be one of several Cents’ players taking part in this Friday’s charity golf tournament at the Merritt Golf & Country Club. Ian Webster/Herald

There’s still a few spots left in this Friday’s Merritt Centennials’ Charity Golf Tournament in support of Centennials’ hockey and Ronald McDonald House British Columbia. This year’s first annual event is set for July 13 at the Merritt Golf & Country Club. It will include nine holes of golf (with tee off times beginning at 3 p.m.) followed by a delicious steak, chicken or rib dinner

prepared by the MGCC staff, and a fabulous silent auction of sports memorabilia and donated items. Past and present Merritt Centennials’ players Brent Fletcher, Payton Schaefer, Chad Brears, Tyler Steel, Richard Sabourin, Brendan Lamont and Dylan Chanter have all indicated that they will be attending the charity golf event. The entry fee for the Cents’ Charity Golf

Tournament is $75 per person. Individuals can also choose to forego the golf and pay just $25 for the meal and evening social only. “It’s raising money for Ronald McDonald House,” states Centennials’ assistant coach Joe Martin. “I happen to know there are four to five families in Merritt right now who have recently taken, or are currently taking advantage of the facility in

Vancouver.” Ronald McDonald House British Columbia is a home-away-fromhome for sick children and their families, where together their lives are enhanced through unconditional support, encouragement, friendship and love. Martin went on to add, “You can sign up as a single, a double or as a group. It doesn’t matter. We’d just like to have as many people as possible

take part and support this worthy cause.” Registration forms for the charity golf event can be downloaded online from the Merritt Centennials’ website. Interested persons may also contact Liz Brackenreed (250-3784291) or email marketing@merrittcentennials. com.

SPORTS

Racing gets heated at Merritt Speedway By Ian Webster THE HERALD

sports@merrittherald.com

The conditions could not have been more perfect Saturday for a great evening of pedalstomping, metal-crunching action at the Merritt Speedway. The skies were sunny, the temperatures hot, the track fast, and the cars more than ready to rumble. Taking full advantage of the ideal racing conditions was Merritt’s own Brad McKay. The young driver was a man on a mission all night, guiding his Pontiac to three first-place victories in the Bomber 4-cylinder class. Hot on McKay’s heels in the wins column was a trio of fellow racers. The father-daughter combination of Tom and Amy Parsons were both two-time winners in the Hobby and Street categories respectively. Similarly, Bill Fader won twice in the Bomber 8-cylinder division. The list of hard-luck racers was almost as long. The evening began with Surrey’s Jake Mills shearing a rear axle on his ’93 Grand Prix during time trials, effectively sending him to the sidelines for the rest of the night. A little while later, in the Bomber 8-cylinder heats, first time driver Challen Hughes left the track on lap 4 and slammed his borrowed car hard into a concrete barrier. Shaken but unbowed, Hughes vowed to race again another day. “It’s my first time,” he stated shortly after the crash, “but hopefully not

the last.” The hard-luck stories continued in the 30-lap main races after the intermission.. In the Hobby class, Les Honeywell didn’t even make it to the green flag as he collided with the back end of Jack Allgrove’s vehicle during the warm-up lap, buckling the front end of his car and destroying the radiator in the process. Allgrove came away relatively unscathed and went on to wage a great battle for first place with Prince George’s Grant Powers, the eventual winner. Lee Lindstrum from Kamloops wasn’t quite so lucky in the Street main. After taking his #92 car from the back of the grid and into the lead, the veteran racer was forced to make a sudden trip to the pits when his car started overheating during a caution flag. Unfortunately, such a

maneuver – forced or unforced – while the yellow flag is up puts a car at the back of the pack when they return. Lindstrum did his best to regain the lead when racing resumed, but to no avail. There’s much more great racing action to come this summer. The next date is August 4 & 5. Racing begins at 7 p.m. on the Saturday night, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

(Right) Winner Grant Powers from Prince George is flanked by the only other survivors of the Hobby class main event, third-place Henry Grizell from Calgary (left) and secondplace Jack Allgrove from Merritt. It may be almost two months until the Merritt minor hockey season gets fully underway, but the need is now for some dedicated individuals to fill several key positions on the Merritt Minor Hockey Association’s list of directors and volunteers. Important jobs that need filling are divisional directors for the atom, peewee, bantam and midget levels, a public relations director, and a referee-inchief to co-ordinate the training and scheduling of on-ice officials.
