BC Games first step for London-bound athletes Submitted

When the Olympic and Paralympic Games begin in London, there are a number of Canadian athletes who will remember their ¿rst multisport experience at a BC Games. Twenty-four athletes on the Canadian Olympic team started their journey to London with a trip to the BC Games including 2008 Olympic gold medalist Carol Huynh (Wrestling), and recent Giro d’Italia winner Ryder Hesjedal (Cycling). As part of the athlete development pathway, the BC Games are a ¿rst multisport experience for young athletes that lead towards provincial and national teams and ul-

timately the Olympic or Paralympic Games. The BC Games are part of a strong provincial sport system that provides an outstanding training environment and support services for high performance athletes. 40% of the Canadian Olympic team live or train in B.C. Shot-putter Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops is one of Canada’s great medal hopes at the 2012 Olympic Games. He is a shining example of a B.C. athlete who has developed to international success with support through all the stages of the athlete pathway. Involved at a young age with the Kamloops Track and Field Club, he represented the Thompson-

Okanagan Zone at the 1995 and 1996 BC Summer Games. Success as part of Team BC at the 2001 Canada Games was next before winning gold for Canada at the 2007 and 2010 Pan American Games. All eyes are on this BC Games alumnus to better his fourth place ¿nish from the 2008 Olympic Games. Swimmer Brent Hayden of Mission is another medal contender in London. Brent competed at the 1998 BC Summer Games and reÀected, “The BC Summer Games was the point in my career when I realized that I had the potential to go further. It was soon after that that I decided to switch from being a summer

swimmer to training all year round. It is clear that I wouldn’t have noticed my own potential without the BC Summer Games.” The full Paralympic team will be named later this summer but, former BC Games athletes Bo Hedges of Fort St. John (Wheelchair Basketball) and Adam Rahier of Powell River (Swimming) will be part of the team. Over 2300 athletes between the ages of 10 and 18 will be at the 2012 BC Summer Games which kick off just one week prior to the start of the Olympics. It is an inspiring experience that will ignite the dreams of many young athletes to pursue their sport to the

highest level. A veteran of the Canadian Women’s Soccer team, Karina LeBlanc from Maple Ridge remembered, “It was an amazing experience because I did dream of one day being at the Olympic Games and it was the closest thing for me to it, so it made me want to be there that much more!” Watch for the next generation of Olympians and Paralympians at the 2012 BC Summer Games, July 1922. RCMP, Search and Rescue, save hiker On the morning of July 8, the Cranbrook RCMP were noti¿ed that a 72 year old hiker was overdue and had not been seen since 4:30 p.m. the previous day when he had become separated from his hiking partner while climbing a peak in the Bull Mountain area. The Cranbrook RCMP noti¿ed EMBC (Emergency Management BC) and Cranbrook Search and Rescue who requested assistance from Kimberley Search and Rescue. As CASARA

(Civilian Air Search and Rescue Association) were holding a large scale exercise locally, they assisted with a ¿xed wing air search. A 20-person ground search team in addition to the RCMP Police Dog Team, was assembled and searched the rugged terrain where the hiker was most likely to be. A helicopter was brought in and transported searchers to the high alpine areas where the search continued. At about 8 p.m., as

search managers were making arrangements for a night search and resources for the next day, a member of the Cranbrook RCMP using a spotting scope, located the missing hiker high on the mountain. A ground team ascended the mountain again to assist the hiker who at 10 p.m., was evacuated by helicopter and transported to a waiting ambulance and taken to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital where he was kept overnight for observation and released. When rescued the hiker appeared exhausted and was suffering from dehydration and weakness from his dif¿cult

descent down the steep slope but was otherwise in good shape. The hiker was an experienced outdoorsman who was very familiar with the area and was well equipped for an over night stay. The hiker did not have a cell phone or personal locator beacon with him so electronic location was not possible. Cranbrook/Kimberley Search and Rescue and the RCMP strongly recommend that all people hiking in remote areas either have a cell phone, VHF radio or personal locator beacon as these devices will aid searchers in quickly locating anyone who may be lost or injured.

YOUR CITY....WORKING FOR YOU! Coffee with the Mayor @ Swing Street Coffeehouse - Saturday July 14, 2012 from 1 – 4pm Free Transit Rides to Cranbrook Farmer’s Market This Summer

Enjoy the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market with free transit rides every Saturday morning from June 23 to October 6, 2012. The free ride comes with a catch: each passenger must be carrying a reusable or recycled bag, be traveling to and from downtown Cranbrook and indicate to their transit driver that they are attending the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market. The City of Cranbrook is funding the free rides for all 16 Saturday markets. The Cranbrook Farmers’ Market runs 9 am to 1 pm, but the free bus rides are from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm. That gives early birds and last minute shoppers’ equal access to transit time. Trips to and from the Cranbrook Farmers’ Market via BC Transit are for non-transferable passes only. This innovative partnership between BC Transit and the City of Cranbrook also achieves five specific goals identified in the community’s long term sustainability plan – “Connecting to our Future.” For more information please visit – www.bctransit.com.

We have to, however, trade off lush lawns and thriving plants for large amounts of standing water in every nook and cranny. This is a mosquito infestation just waiting to happen, but there are things we can do to lessen the impact. Chances are that any standing water is teeming with mosquito larvae - a quick look will let you spot the little wrigglers just under the surface. The best line of defense is preventing them from hatching in the first place, thus reducing the number of pesky insects in your yard. Dump out any standing water from saucers under flower pots and other containers, change water in birdbaths and small water features at least once a week, unclog rain gutters and remove anything from the yard that could collect water, such as old tires, tarps and buckets. If you have water features that cannot be emptied, look into installing a pump to keep the water moving. Swimming pools should be treated and circulated. Introducing koi or other fish into your pond can take care of mosquito larvae there. If you have any areas of standing water where all these strategies will not work, mosquito dunks can offer a solution. These products contain a solid form of BT (Bacillus Thuringiensis), a naturally occurring bacteria, that kills mosquitoes while they are hatching in water. Simply place a whole or parts of the dunk - depending on the size of the water feature you are treating - in the water. It will be effective for 30 days and the product is completely safe for children, pets and wildlife, so you don’t have to worry about Fido drinking out of the pond after it has been treated. If mosquitoes are coming into your yard from other areas, Mosquito Barrier can be an effective tool to keep them out. This is a garlic-based liquid you can spray on your trees, shrubs, flowers and even grass to repel the pesky insects. Garlic juice does not harm humans or pets, but can be toxic to mosquitoes, so just the smell of it can chase them away. And mosquitoes have a keen sense of smell - while the garlic odour becomes undetectable to humans after a few minutes, the barrier can be effective to repel mosquitoes for almost a month. There are other smells that mosquitoes cannot stand. Basil, eucalyptus, scented geraniums, peppermint, oregano, sage, thyme, rosemary, lemon balm, catnip, onions, garlic, feverfew, lemongrass and marigolds are just a few of the scents mosquitoes dislike. Having an assortment of these plants strategically placed in containers on your deck or around sitting areas could help with deterring mosquitoes. For even more protection, crush and rub the leaves on your skin for a sweet and natural perfume that bugs mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are most active on calm and humid days, especially near sunrise and sunset. If you are out in the yard during that time, you might want to use extra protection. There are bug foggers you can use to treat larger areas and sprays, foams and insect repellent patches can give you some individual protection. Citronella candles or oil lamps keep mosquitoes at bay and give off an attractive, warm, flickering light as well. There are quite a few different options to help you and your guest stay comfortable outdoors and reduce mosquitoes to a bare minimum. Your local garden centre will have even more suggestions to help get rid of these unwanted guests. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin

2. Over the past year, BC has added 53,000 net new jobs, second best in Canada, and our labour force has increased by nearly 40,000 people, the largest increase of any province. BC is doing well.

Thanks for your feedback

3. Through Canada Starts here: the BC Jobs Plan, government is making smart investments in infrastructure and skills training and our province’s private sector employers are responding with their own investments and creating family-sustaining jobs.

From May 14 to June 22, 2012, we asked for your input on proposals that would see lower-risk drivers pay less and higher-risk drivers pay more. Thank you to everyone who added their voice online, in our public open houses, in writing and by phone. Your valuable feedback will help us make the most reasonable recommendations for a fairer and more driver-based system.

Kletzel, who has signed a two year contract with a club option for a third year, replaces Todd Johnson who was named Head Coach for the University of Regina Men’s Hockey Team in April. “It is very exciting for our organization to have Chad join our coaching staff. He is a teacher by trade so he will be able to relate to the needs and wants of today’s generation of hockey players. Chad also played in our League as has coached at different levels of minor hockey which will deÂżnitely be an asset to our Club,â€? continued Chynoweth. “Chad is very passionate to begin coaching in the Western Hockey League. Our players will beneÂżt a great deal from his playing experiences and his knowledge of the game,â€? commented Head Coach Ryan McGill. Chad Kletzel played three seasons in the WHL with the Edmonton ICE (1996-1997 with current Head Coach Ryan McGill) and Lethbridge Hurricanes (1997-1999). He also won a RBC Cup national championship with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in 1999-2000. Chad also played three years with the University of Lethbridge (20012004) and achieved two degrees during his tenure at the U of L; a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology and a Bachelor of Education. For the past four years he has been coaching with the Lethbridge Athletic Association, including last year as Head Coach of the Midget AAA team. Chad Kletzel is a 32-year-old native of Indus, Alberta. Chad will be joining the ICE on July 30. The Club also announced that Assistant Coach Jerry Bancks will return for his third season with the Club.

OBITUARY Dorothy Jean (Jeannie) Lamond August 27, 1961-June 30, 2012 It is with sad hearts and a million wonderful memories that we say goodbye to our beloved mother, sister and friend. Jeannie was a wonderful mother to Jessica (Rory), Eric and a proud grandmother to Caitlyn and Kieran, and a precious sister to Bob (Donna), Tom (Terry), Brian (Elizabeth) and a loving Aunt and great Aunt to many nieces and nephews. Jeannie was born in Castlegar B.C. to Robert and Doreen Lamond. She spent her early years in Kinnaird B.C. and in 1970 the family moved to Pine Point NWT, where Jeannie attended Matonabbe School. In 1976 the family again moved to Canal Flats B.C. where Jeannie attended and graduated from David Thompson in June of 1979. Her life adventure started in July 1979 with a move to Fort McMurray which became her home for the next 33 years. During her life in Fort McMurray she developed lasting friendships with numerous people through her involvement with The Welcome Wagon, Girl Guides, and various other community groups and activities. In the early 1990’s Jeannie began attending St. Thomas Anglican Church. This became the chapter of her life that allowed her to share many of her gifts and passion with her church family. The St. Thomas family became a significant part of her life. In 2001 Jeannie fulfilled her dream of opening a Christian bookstore. As the owner of the Missing Peace, Jeannie continued to expand her Christian family by reaching out to the community. The store allowed Jeannie to express her lifelong passions of travel, shopping, and talking to people. On June 30th surrounded by her family, Jeannie lost a short courageous battle with cancer. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors of 3rd floor medicine for all the support and care they extended to Jeannie during her stay. A Celebration of Life was held at McMurray Gospel Assembly on Saturday July, 7th, 2012 at 2:00 pm. In Lieu of flowers donations can be the Colorectal Cancer Association of Canada.

Merle Odean Simon 1928-2012 On the morning of Wednesday, July the 4th, 2012 Merle Simon passed away suddenly at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital at the age of 84. Merle was born in Starkweather, North Dakota on February 17, 1928. His family moved from North Dakota in the 1930's to Anacortes, Washington. During WW 2, Merle served in the US Navy. Merle had many different jobs as a young man.....salesman, electrician, carpenter.... A jack of all trades and he could build or sell almost anything! In 1959, the call of the Canadian Rockies brought him and his family to Skookumchuck, B.C. from California to try his hand at running the S half diamond dude ranch on Premier Lake along with his life long friend, Rad Hartwell. After the S half diamond venture, he built the S-S ranch on the Lucier River and, with his wife Ev, raised Quarter horses, farmed and even started an egg business with over 2000 laying hens. Merle and Ev became avid team ropers with Merle the header and Ev the heeler. To fulfill their passion for roping, they built the Hayshed Barn indoor riding arena at Mayook and from that started the Hayshed Trailer manufacturing business. The business was eventually sold so that he could retire...but retired life didn't suit him. In 1997 he started the Hayshed Too trailer business in Cranbrook. His passions in life were family, horses, building, quadding, travel and especially classic country western music and dancing with the love of his life Ev. Merle will be sadly missed by all his Washington State family, his good friends and his quadding buddies. Merle leaves to mourn his passing his two sons, Rod (Mary Kay), Randy (Marcey), grandchildren Justin, Matt and Jessica and 3 great grandchildren. Merle also leaves his brothers-in-law Allan (Marni) and Fred (Char) Miller, three sisters-in-law Joan Unruh, Jean (Ernie) Funk and Gloria (Lou) Rogers. Merle had a special place in his heart for Ev's nieces and nephews. All of them were a great help and comfort to him after the passing of their Aunty Ev. A memorial service will be held for Merle on Monday, July 16, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at Mark Memorial Funeral Home, 2024 Industrial Rd. No. 2, Cranbrook, BC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, #101, 105 - 9th Ave. S., Cranbrook, BC V1C 2M1. Condolences may be left for the family at www.markmemorial.com. Mark Memorial Funeral Services in care of arrangements (250) 426-4864

Dangerous Drugs in Our Community Home-grown marijuana operations or crack labs have become one of the more popular means for supplying local drug dealers with narcotics. These drugs end up in the hands of our children and in¿ltrate our schools and homes. The damages caused by the use of these illicit drugs tear at the very fabric of our society and can have irreversible effects. Crime Stoppers is asking for your help in identifying individuals growing marijuana or running crack labs in our community. Most operations are managed under strictly controlled conditions. Light, water and soil nutrients are closely monitored to ensure maximum plant growth in the least amount of time. Marijuana cultivated under these conditions is more potent and therefore more harmful to its users. Crack labs are far more dangerous operations involving the combining of various very harmful and sometimes volatile products. Electricity is also dangerously rerouted in many cases. Any combination of the following information may indicate the presence of a marijuana grow operation: blacked out - tin foiled windows, heavy condensation on the insides of windows, very intense bright lights running between 18 or more hours a day, a musty, greenhouse odor, excessive indoor/outdoor electrical wiring, portable generators running for extensive periods of time, additional venting or fans constructed into walls or roofs. Crime Stoppers needs your help in identifying and stopping criminals who pro¿t on the cultivation and distribution of illicit drugs in our community. Do you know anyone or any location where this type of activity is occuring or have information on any other crime, if so; Crime Stoppers will pay a reward up to $2,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for this crime. If you have any information about this crime or any other crime, call Crime Stoppers. You don't have to reveal your identity. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display.
