Aquatic Centre’s grand opening to include free public swimming By Treena Mielke Everything seems to be going swimmingly at the new Rimbey Aquatic Centre and officials are keeping their fingers crossed the weather will co-operate for the pool’s grand opening. The event, July 10 at 1:30 p.m. the second one scheduled in the last few weeks, is to feature speeches, ribbon cutting, refreshments and finally a free swim, and dignitaries are anxious to hold the event without further delay. CAO Tony Goode is pleased the pool is operational. “We’ve had a few bugs to work out,” he said, “but things are settling down now.” The bugs Goode referred to included unforeseen delays in construction and finally, after opening, leaks in the drain box caused the pool to shut down twice. To add insult to injury, one of the shutdowns occurred when the grand opening was to have taken place. However, the aquatic centre has run fairly smoothly the last couple of weeks, and the ripples of breakdowns and problems seem to have dissolved.

This little girl got a bird’s eye view of the festivities at the Canada Day festivities held in Rimbey July 1. A good crowd showed up for the event and the weather co-operated throughout the day. Treena Mielke Photo

“The aquatic centre and spray park will be a great asset, not only to our town residents, but to our rural neighbors as well,” Goode said. “Of course, none of it would have been possible without the generosity from the federal government, the county and our many other benefactors.” Recreation director Rick Kreklewich said swimming classes are in progress, the floor surfaces in the change rooms have been repainted and the spray park is running smoothy. “We foresee no issues coming up,” he said. “Everything is running well.” The grand opening promises to be a gala affair with the mayor and council in attendance. Invitations have been sent out to MP Blaine Calkins, Ponoka County, Lions Club, Scott Builders, Servus Credit Union and others. Following the speeches, the presentations and the ribbon cutting, refreshments will be served and tours will take place. A free public swim will ne held from 3 to 8 p.m. Rates, theme swims and other program information can be found at www.rimbey.com

Red Deer Royals to march in Rimbey parade By Treena Mielke

The Red Deer Royals will march in the Rimbey parade to be held July 14 at 11 a.m. The parade will begin at the high school field and make its usual route around town. Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Photo

The Rimbey parade, to be held July 14 at 11 a.m., will receive royal treatment this year. The Red Deer Royals Marching Show Band will take part in the parade, and their appearance will, no doubt, add color and pizzazz to the small town event, not to mention music well worth listening to. Director Rob Goring said approximately 98 members of the Royals will come to Rimbey. “We try to take part in parades that are within an hour from Red Deer,” he said. “We are looking forward to coming to Rimbey. We’re happy to be participating.” Band members range in age from 11 to 21 and represent 20 schools throughout the area traveling from as far south as Carstairs, north to Edmonton and

west to Caroline. The band is made up of woodwinds, brass, percussion and a colorguard. Recreation director Rick Kreklewich is pleased the Royals are taking part in the parade, and encourages local entrants as well. The parade will begin at the field behind the Rimbey high school and proceed down 52nd and onto Main Street and travel to the front of Rimbey Manor before ending up back at the high school. Cheryl Jones, administrator for the Rimbey Historical Society, said several trucks and tractors from the International Truck Museum will participate and town dignitaries will ride in the 1912 Autowagon. The autowagon has participated in the Ponoka Stampede and the Donalda 100th anniversary celebration. Registration forms for the parade are available on line at www.rimbey.com under important notices

CARA and local rodeo action hits town July 13-15 By Treena Mielke The Rimbey Rodeo is fast approaching and organizers are working hard behind the scenes to make sure the event runs smoothly and competitors and spectators will find the experience enjoyable and be sure to come back again. Promotions director Hazel Street said local competitors will have an opportunity to participate in the rodeo event of their choice Friday, July 13. She said spots are open for competitors in barrels for ages 10 and under and also for 11- to 15-year-olds and ladies. Wild cow milking, a cattle rustling race, stockman’s saddle horse race, local cow riding, relay race and tire race competitions are also open. Muttin busting will be held before each performance on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and competitors may enter this event at the rodeo office one hour before the performance.

To register for these events call 403-843-4079 or 403-783-9985. Street said the rodeo will follow the same format as in the past with a pancake breakfast sponsored by Rimbey Co-op and Servus Credit Union held in the Co-op parking lot from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Friday. The rodeo board has organized a cabaret to be held at the agricultural building July 14 featuring the band Wooden Nickle. The Central Alberta Rodeo Association sanctioned rodeo will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Each day, rodeo action will be preceded by the grand entry led by the rodeo queen. Rodeo queen competitors are Emily Henschel, sponsored by Nikirk Brothers, Shelby Buschnell sponsored by Allen B. Olsen, Sydney Lawson, sponsored by Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel and Caitlyn Malyk, sponsored by Action Auto Body.

Summer, with all its idle promises of long hot days where sunshine obligingly spills over everyone and everything, and roses, wild and otherwise, bloom profusely and in abundance, is here. I like summer. Of course, it seems like it rains most of the summer and people are always saying, “I am so sick of this rain,” and then, surprise, surprise, it rains some more. But, it is what it is, and, if you look hard and long enough, there is always good things going on between the raindrops. For me, it was the phone call from my son the other day. “I’m taking the boat out, mom,” he said. I immediately conjured up a vision of me skimming across the lake on my water skis, expertly weaving in and out of the wake miraculously, almost but not quite wiping out and everyone in the boat cheering and saying things like, “Way to go mom, you rock.” And I visualized myself, after a long and satisfying ski, during which I did not wipe out once, climbing back into the boat, all shaky and dripping wet, but still quietly pleased with myself. “I’ll be there,” I said. And I was. It turned out, however, my fantasy remained only that — a fantasy. The lake, for all its stunning, shimmering beauty, looked like someone had taken an eggbeater to it, whipping the zillion harmless little waves to

whitecap fury. And so I, not being one to argue with such logic, did not ski. Instead, I sat safe and secure in the boat, quite content at not having to live up to my fantasy, after all. I took pictures, inTreena Mielke stead. On The Other Side I caught these three beautiful women with the lens of my camera. They were so lovely, and best of all, they were all right there, in the boat. Click. Click. Click. Got em. Daughter, daughter in-law and granddaughter. All special. All beautiful. All on camera. And then there was the man at the wheel, my son, who tried really hard to manoeuvre his boat to a place on the lake where the wind had somehow forgotten to blow. He couldn’t, but in the end it really didn’t matter. I snapped his photo, storing the picture on digital and, also in my mind, because, even though the wind was relentless, and the boat ride more than a little bumpy, it truly was a memory-keeper day. And, who knows, summer, with all of its intoxicating, heady beauty, has only just begun, and

there may still be a day; a really, nice hot summer day when I will get another phone call. And, on that day; that really, nice hot summer day, the lake may be flat as glass, and I will gingerly lower myself off the boat into the freezing, giant ice cube some people call a lake, and struggle for about half an hour to slip my feet into the boots of the water skis (this is a realistic fantasy), and finally, after much threshing around in an unladylike manner) grasp the end of the ski rope. And then, finally, once I get my breath, I will lean back focusing my eyes on the blue sky above me until the rope is taunt and the boat motor idling, but not too fast. And, finally, I will say, “Hit it.” Of course, nothing will happen because the driver won’t hear the words, so I will flounder about for a few minutes and then finally yell “Hit it” again, but really loud. And this time the boat will roar into action, and I will be up and flying and when conscious thought returns to me I will think, “I love this. This is incredible. Wow.” And then I will smile at the people in the boat, but they won’t be able to see the smile clearly because of the crystal clear wake splashing up between me and them. But it doesn’t really matter. It’s kind of like the sun shining between the raindrops. You don’t really have to see it to know it is there.

Taxpayers will give Oda a $701K pension The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) estimates retired International Development Minister Bev Oda’s annual parliamentary pension will instantly start at $52,183, adding up to $701,464 by the time she reaches the age of 80. “Bev Oda’s lifetime pension should cover about 43,841 glasses of $16 orange juice,” said CTF national research director Derek Fildebrandt. “It’s wrong that she can collect $52,183 in annual pension benefits after only eight years on the job,” said CTF’s federal director Gregory Thomas. “Especially when the average new Canada Pension Plan monthly payment in 2012 is $534.10.” The parliamentary pension fund is in better shape to cover platinum-plated pensions such as Oda’s, having just been topped up on June 30 with the quarterly deposit of another $23 million taxpayer dollars into the parliamentary pension plan. Under regulations adopted by cabinet, instead of investing pension funds into the market, MPs simply pay themselves interest at the end of every quarter at a compounded annual rate of 10.4 per cent. The fund has grown by $69 million in the past 12 months and now tops $950 million. “By charging taxpayers 10.4 per cent interest on their pension plan, MPs retirement savings continue to outperform just about every other pension plan in the country,” said Thomas. For the year ending 2009-10, taxpayers contributed $102.6 million to the MP pension fund, while parliamentarians chipped in $4.4 million, a $23.30 to $1 ratio. In 2010-11, taxpayers contributed $110.7 million, while parliamentarians chipped in $4.5 million, a $24.36 to $1 ratio. And the CTF estimates that taxpayers contributed $25.81 to the parliamentary pension plan in 2011-12 for each $1 that federal politicians contributed. “If Canadian’s don’t speak up this summer, MP pension reform will consist of little more than putting lipstick on a pig,” continued Thomas. “The prime minister must take real action and truly fix these outrageous pensions.”

Mini chucks coming to rodeo By Treena Mielke

oughbred chuckwagon racer, began racing the miniature horses about three years. He has found little difference in the races. “You’re still driving. You’re still handling four lines. And they’re quick.” Consgrave said miniature horses were clocked at 32 kn/h while competing in races in Armstrong, B. C. Racing miniature horses is not without risks. Wagons, which weigh 350 pounds, can tip easily, so it’s important the driver exercises skill and keeps his wits about him while competing. Even experience and skill while handling the reins was not enough to keep Consgrave’s wagon from flipping last year when he was competing at the Calgary Stampede. The accident not only cost him the win, it put him on the injury list with four broken ribs and a punctured lung. But, this year he is back, participating in a sport he loves. “I still feel the rush of adrenalin and the excitement. And I still want to win,” he added. “I don’t like losing.” Consgrave is especially looking forward to coming to Rimbey. “Rimbey is closer to home than Calgary and it has a bigger infield. I really wanted to come back.” He said the Rimbey Rodeo is a reflection of the town itself, offering fun and excitement, but more importantly, friendship, laughter and a chance to be part of the small town flavor the community is famous for. “There is no fighting Windows by Galaxy and arguing and it’s not competitive, really. It’s New home & renovation more of a hobby. That’s what it’s all about. It’s just windows & doors fun.” The Alberta Miniature • Windshield Repair/Replacement Chuckwagon Racing As• Custom Cut Flat Glass sociation is a non-profit • Sealed Units organization organized in 1998. • Pink Ribbon Wiper Blades The miniature chuck• Phantom Door Screens wagon races are run with • Retractable Window Screens two wagons per heat and as many heats as events time allows. Chuckwagon races, no matter the size of the horses pulling the wagons, provide great entertainment for the entire family and this year, these races will be a huge and exciting part of the Rimbey Rodeo. Miniature chuckwagon races will be held July 14 and 15, during regular rodeo performances. Promotions director Hazel Street said the miniature chucks have been brought back by popular demand. “We had them about two years ago,” she said. “They were really good. Everyone liked them, so we brought them back.” Ron Consgrave from Wetaskiwin, president of the Alberta Miniature Chuckwagon Racing Association, said between eight and 10 wagons will participate in the races. In 1982 the agency opened its doors to the public. Today FCSS/RCHHS has approximately 50 employees who are involved in the over 20 programs available to the Town of Rimbey and the west half of the County of Ponoka. Viola Schneider, who has been a dedicated member of the FCSS/RCHHS Board of Directors since its incorporaƟon in 1982, says of the FCSS “Over the years I have seen what the programs do for people and how they help people, and I want these programs to carry on.” Mrs. Schneider says of FCSS/RCHHS ExecuƟve Director, Peggy MakoŅa, “Peggy is also one of the reasons I am sƟll here, I see all of the goodness and the planning for the future in Peggy.” And as for the future of the agency, a new global trend is in the social networking. The reasons to celebrate Canada Day are as diverse as the people themselves, but in Rimbey, as in other communities throughout the nation, the celebration carried with it, a common denominator. It’s fun. For Lyle Schmidt and his wife, Dianne from Calgary, Canada Day in Rimbey meant spending time with seven of his eight grandchildren. Schmidt, dressed in a red T-shirt with “Canada” printed across the front in bold letters, has been bringing his family to Rimbey to celebrate the day for at least 15 years. “We have a cottage at Gull Lake and we just love coming here,” he said. “We love the town. There is good people here and it has a small town atmosphere. We also love the fireworks and you can park right beside them. It’s not too crowded.” For Crystal Michalsky from Crestomere, coming to Rimbey to celebrate Canada Day is a way to teach her children, Joshua, five and Isaac, 11, the importance of recognizing Canada’s birthday, while having some great fun. “I try to explain it to them. I hope it means something,” she said. Jean Buist from Rimbey always comes to the celebrations. “I come for the ice cream and cake,’ she said jokingly. On a more serious note, Buist said Canadians should Danielle Fischer, two, waves her Canadian be grateful for the country in which they live. Phyllis - Dave & Ryan Karroll

By June Norvila For the third successive year, the Bentley Firefighters Foundation (BFF) co-ordinated and hosted a great Canada Day celebration in Bentley with by far the biggest attendance ever. The weather cooperated despite threatening storms. It was not too hot, nor too cold, nor even too windy. The July 1 evening, staged in the Main Street downtown parking lot, started off with a welcome from new BFF president Krista Turner. Dignitaries in attendance were recognized. Thirty-eight dozen free hotdogs complete with condiments, decorated Canada Day cupcakes, and pop/water/juice were offered and were used up with some people having to be turned away. Members from the All That Jazz dance troupe out of Lacombe put on a free show before Gustavo the Impossiblist (Dean Bareham from Calgary) held the audiences attention with his humor and tricks assisted by some locals. The fire department had set up a course that gave kids and their chosen adult a chance to be pitted against each other in a fun firefighter-style competition that included carrying a fire extinguisher down a course, moving a weighted object a designated distance with only the power of a hammer to propel it, rescuing by pulling back a pretend body a designated distance, before grabbing a water hose and aiming water to knock off a target, in many cases wetting down kids who purposely stood in the way of the water stream, all in the name of fun. Of course the kid’s portion of the event had been adapted for them with shorter distances and smaller props. Bouncy castles kept youngsters entertained and DJ Matt Firth from On the Mark Productions in Red Deer provided music for listening and dancing. A display of fireworks by Fireworks Factory

from Rockyford, assisted by firefighter Peter Issler, capped off the evening at 11 p.m. The entire evening, that drew locals and visitors alike, was made possible because of the great support and donations from throughout the community, a Heritage Foundation grant, and help from Lacombe County.

“As long as we keep getting the kind of support we have, we will keep putting it on,” said BFF past president Carolyn McLaren. “It is a lot of work but well worth it.” BFF executive include president Krista Turner, vice-president Kathi Issler, secretary Marsha Lush, and treasurer Cheryl Hueppelsheuser.

Copper wire item of choice for thieves This past week the Rimbey RCMP responded to more than 46 calls for service including various noise complaints, collisions and domestic disputes. Copper wire attractive to thieves Several more lease sites in the coun-

ties have had supplies stolen from them. Copper wire is the item of choice for most of the thieves. The price of scrap metal — especially copper — on the world market is increasing, making stealing wire much more lucrative. The RCMP asks if you

see suspicious activity around lease sites to please obtain as much detail of the suspect(s) and their vehicles as you can safely do and report it immediately. Thieves casing neighbourhoods A light blue Crown Victoria has been

seen recently skulking around yards in the Centerview area. At one location the occupants attempted to steal a pressure washer. If you have any information or see this vehicle in your area please let the RCMP know. A 2007 Black and Silver Polaris quad was stolen from in town this past week. Please ensure that all ATVs are locked up, inside if possible. Two separate fires The RCMP assisted the fire department with two separate fires this past week. Lightening struck a stack of hay causing the whole stack to burn up. In another incident a Volkswagen started on fire in someone’s yard, The cause is believed to have been mechanical. Domestic disputes So far July has been a busy one for domestic disputes, In the first four days of July, RCMP were called to four domestic disputes. A 20-year-old Rimbey man and a 48-year-old Ponoka County man have been charged with assault stemming from separate incidents. The Rimbey and District Victim Services Unit, was able to assist and offer their services in all four incidents. Fireworks need permit — even on Canada Day Citizens of the area showed their patriotism this past Canada Day, with numerous private fireworks shows being displayed all over the detachment area. Sadly the vast majority of them were illegal, although no fines were issued, several warnings were given. If you have any information on these or any other ther crimes, please call the Rimbey RCMP at (403) 3) 8432224 or Crime Stoppers toppers at 1-800-222-8477, 8477, #8477 on Telus Mobility or *8477 on Rogers AT&T. Fire struck bales in a farmyard northwest of Rimbey last week. The fire completely destroyed the bales, but Rimbey Fire Department was able to keep the fire from spreading. APN Photo

Lightning fire destroys bales By Treena Mielke The roar of thunder and the flash of lightning from an electrical storm that swept through the area July 3 seemed so perilously close to her house, Angela Oram hit the floor for cover. “The thunder struck and the lightning sounded all at the same time,” the farm wife and mother of two recalled.

“There’s no time differential. And the lightning seemed like a sudden glow behind me.” After the initial thunder and lightning scare, Oram and her children, sevenyear-old Owen and five-year-old Tracy, peered out of the south window of their farmhouse, to see flames shooting out of a stack of 40 large square alfalfa bales

about 200 feet away. “The lightning had hit the tarp and the bales were on fire,” Oram said. “When I saw that I just picked up the phone and called 9-1-1 right away.” Although shaken by the sudden turn of events, Oram had enough presence of mind to let some cattle out of a pen close to the burning hay bales before the Rimbey Fire Department arrived. By June Norvila Twenty-three Bentley graduates have left their mark on Bentley and now are moving on with a different part of their lives. The town has left its “tattoo” on them too. American country artist Jason Aldean’s song “Tattoos on This Town” was the theme of this year’s graduation on June 28, a month later than what had been a traditional May graduation for many years. The evening started off with a catered meal in the Blindman Valley Centre for grads, their families and supporters, some school administration and teachers, dignitaries and invited guests. Masters of ceremonies were Grade 11 students Peter Mueller and Justine Henry. The Toast to the Parents was given by graduates Darien Miller and Andrea Taylor, with the reply by Mr. Dennis Duncan. The Toast to the Teachers was extended by Alick Croft and Nevada Snow, with the reply by teacher Mr. Jason Hazlett. Shelby Duncan, Jessie Cadman, and Rochelle Barteski showed their PowerPoint presentation about each of the grads during their school years. United Church minister Adam Kilner, who spoke of making an impact on the world, performed grace and the invocation. School principal Lane Moore introduced each graduate as they took their place on stage, the girls in their gorgeous fairytale gowns and the guys dressed to the nines. Continued on page 15

The Rimbey Review, July 10, 2012 15

Bentley grads enjoy special celebration Continued from page 13 The Bentley class of 2012 is: Rochelle Barteski, Jessie Cadman, Alick Croft, Shelby Duncan, Shauny Durant, Randi Gordon, Trent Grutterink, Matthew Huehn, Darien Miller, Stephanie Lenz, Shenelle McPhee, Zarina Mirwais, Jolene Naismith, Kayla Neumeier, Colby Reid, Jayce Rogers, Matthew Rosenthal, Kesler Scholze, Nevada Snow, Andrea Taylor, David Tronnes, Emili Tudhope, and Kyle Turbull. Congratulatory messages were offered. Wolf Creek Public Schools trustee Mrs. Karin Engen explained her idea of how “life long learning and technological devices” have changed over the years. Bentley town mayor Mrs. Joan Dickau wanted the graduates to realize what a great supportive group in their families and friends the graduates have had and said “You have left your mark (on this town) like the (chosen theme) song says.” Class historians Rochelle Barteski and Trent Grutterink shared amusing and sometimes embarrassing anecdotes about what they remembered about each student. Class Valedictorian Shelby Duncan, the winner of multiple scholarships, spoke to the capacity audience who filled the many extra chairs that were hauled in. Former school principal Lothar Kemski, who personally knew most of the graduating class, was the guest speaker. He reminisced about his 17 years at

Bentley School, honoring “your Mom” as they see their child leaving home, and change. He compared graduating from school and what it means, to learning to ride a bicycle. There is someone holding on to the back and “pushing” you along while at the same time that person is wanting to hold on and not let go but know that is what they have to do. Award and scholarship presentations followed. Shelby Duncan received the ATA Award from teacher Merv Leidl. She also got the award for highest mark in Social 30 and the highest mark in English 30 as presented by Jason Hazlett, and highest mark in Math 30/31 from Brenda Von Kuster. She also earned the Governor General Award. Colby Reid received highest mark in the sciences, sponsored by the Bentley Ag Society, presented by teacher Morgan Laird and Ag Society president Joan Dickau. Jessie Cadman received the Lifetouch Scholarship from teacher Lee Varty. Ag Society president Joan Dickau also helped present the Bentley Ag Society Scholarship that went to Trent Grutterink who plans to attend Olds College and take ag mechanics. Andrea Taylor won the Bentley Seed Cleaning Plant Scholarship as presented by Lane Moore. Principal Lane Moore and school board trustee Karin Engen presented Kayla Neumeier and Rochelle Barteski with Wolf Creek Public Schools Scholar-

ships. Jolene Naismith got the Wolf Creek CTS scholarship. Rutherford recipients for 80 per cent or higher went to Shelby Duncan, Shenelle McPhee, Colby Reid and Jolene Naismith; and for 75 to 79.9 per cent to Stephanie Lenz, Kayla Neumeier, Andrea Taylor, Jessie Cadman, and Kyle Turnbull. School athletic director/vice-principal Stephen Lush presented Minor Athletic Awards to Jessie Cadman and Darien Miller, and Major Athletic Awards to Shelby Duncan, Alick Croft, Randi Gordon, Trent Grutterink, Stephanie Lenz, Matthew Huehn, Shenelle McPhee, Jayce Rogers, Colby Reid, Kesler Scholze, Andrea Taylor and Kyle Turnbull, noting it is quite an achievement for more than half the class to receive the sports awards. Kyle Turnbull received the Outstanding Male Athlete Award, sponsored by the Elks and presented by Lush and Elks member Martin Schneider; and Randi Gordon was the Outstanding Female Athlete Award winner, sponsored by the Royal Purple and presented by Lush and Royal Purple member Julie Potter. Kyle Turnbull won the Cheryl

O

Screpnek Humanitarian Award that was presented by Sherry Haarstad. The Bentley Library Society Best All Around Students Awards and pending scholarships, presented by Moore and Bentley Library Society vicechairman Colleen McNaught, went to Kyle Turbull and Colby Reid. There were some new scholarships. The Altered Images Scholarship, as presented by Sherry Haarstad and Altered Images representative Cherri Bosch, went to Shenelle McPhee; and the Sylvan Lake Rotary Club PRIDE Award as presented by Moore and Rotarian Joyce Megson, who explained that the Rotarians like to “give back”, were awarded to Kyle Turnbull and Alick Croft. PRIDE represents the school motto of Partnership, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, and Excellence. Certificates were given to each graduate as they left the stage and a yellow long-stemmed rose was also given to them to share with family. There were lots of hugs throughout the evening and especially at the conclusion as everyone realized it was a “final farewell’ for many of the students and teachers. A few tears were shed.

THANKS

n February 28, 2012 I was diagnosed with malignant lymphoma of the brain, on the left side. By March 8, I was a patient in the Calgary Foothills Hospital. After four months of chemotherapy and assorted treatments, I am finally back in my country home and slowly recovering.

TO EVERYONE

I would like to thank the many people who made it possible that I am still alive. First of all, Pidherney’s Equipment, for clearing snow so we could get to town, Our wonderful Rimbey doctors ( Dr. De Bruyn, Dr. Boorman, and Dr. Weller on our return). Thank you to Janet Carlson at Servus Credit Union, Casey Kooyman at BDO, Rimbey Co-op and a special thanks to the ambulance who also stopped on main street while taking me to Calgary, so my brothers had a chance to say goodbye!

12072WW1

Only in Rimbey! Our local communities, Iola, Blindman & Bluffton have been behind us all the way. Trevor and Deneen, who took care of me when I wasn’t aware and to Donna and the girls at Stationery, Stories & Sounds who have kept me well supplied in journals, pens, and whatever I needed. Once I could think again, I wrote for hours and journaled daily. I thank all the churches, friends, family and prayer groups who thought of me and prayed for me. Believe me, when I say I felt the love all around me. Lastly, but most importantly, I thank my husband Dean and my children. Dean was suddenly thrown into a whole way of life, where he was the caregiver and being forced to live in a dirty busy city and fight until all the bureaucracy involved all the time, never knowing if he would have a partner the next day or not. Our daughter in law Chandra ( and son Kevin) were a godsend. Living in Calgary, they were able to help in so many ways. My son Tim, from Toronto, arrived early in the treatment and helped walk and talk me through some very difficult procedures. Our daughter Kim, our son Jason, my brother Ben and families were helping us all the way to keep the “home fires burning” and visiting the hospital. Also my old friend Ivy who spent hours comforting me in the hospital. Thanks to our neighbour Bill, who checked our place and collected the mail for all those months. Today, we will see Dr. De Bruyn and hopefully begin the rehab, road to recovery in Rimbey. We are so thankful to live in a community that cares. Our hope and prayer is for recovering and a chance to return some of the love and care, that has been so freely given to us!

With love. Sonja Ostrem & Dean Vig

Family summertime safety a must this season While summertime is a season to live easy, there are some inherent dangers to summer that can halt plans of fun in the sun. With a greater number of people out and about enjoying the warm weather, the risk for accidents and injuries increases. Higher rates of drowning, motor vehicle accidents and bicycle injuries occur this time of year.

Sun-related injuries Individuals who are exposed to sunlight between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. without UV protection may become sunburned, increasing their risk for skin cancer. Dehydration and heat stroke are other potential hazards. Drinking plenty of water and other hydrating fluids (not diuretics like alco-

hol) can keep the body cool and refreshed. Water hazards Drowning incidents increase 100 per cent over the summer months. It takes only inches of water to drown a person, especially a young child. Swimming only where there is a certified lifeguard can make water recreation safer.

SEELY Donald Lloyd

PALM On Tuesday, June 26, 2012, Eli William Palm passed away to a place of no pain. Eli was a kind-hearted, loving boy with a contagious sense of humour, an old soul, and an unrivaled sense of sportsmanship. He worked hard, played hard, and made an unbelievable number of people very happy. Born in Rimbey on June 1, 1995, Eli leaves a wide circle of heartbreak in his passing. Many childhood days were spent on the farm with his grandparents, Ruth and Leo who taught him to tell time, hill potatoes, and sauna like a proper Finn. They nurtured Eli’s love of music and were his most captive audience as he sat down at the piano, picked up a violin, and eventually dabbled in guitar. Most will remember Eli in a jersey; soccer, basketball, track, uniforms he inherited from his father, Rod who coached him through these endeavours. Under his guidance, Eli became a tough competitor, good sport, and encouraging leader. His genuine love of the game and the boys he shared it with was clearly evident. His mother, Mary was the soft place, the listening ear, the gentle hug, and diligent educator. His quiet wisdom, inclusive attitude, and affectionate ways were a credit to her nurturing. So were all his best dance moves. To his sisters, Eli was a secret-keeper, friend, playmate, and partner in crime. Emma and Annika would like to take credit for his many stunning qualities, but really it was he who taught them patience, reason, and how to laugh. Confidence, humility, creativity, work ethic, quick wit, and a keen intuition; these and so many other remarkable qualities are a reflection of Eli’s family, including Marilyn, Sandy, and Jessie Negropontes; and Chris, Joyce, Susan, Sadie, and Evan Dann of Calgary; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended relatives. In addition, the family Eli chose for himself, his friends, meant just as much as those who were related. The quality of character exemplified by these people is a heartwarming indicator of his good judgment and charisma. For as much as Eli’s large family gave... they received it back a hundredfold. There are not enough words to thank all of the individuals, coaches, teachers, friends, and mentors that shaped him. This boy we loved so dearly was truly ‘raised by a village’. We are so proud of the man Eli was becoming, and grateful for each moment of his wild and precious life.

Don passed away peacefully on June 30th, 2012 at Breton Health Care Center, Breton Alberta where he resided for the past six years. Don was born on April 24th, 1939 at Battle Lake, Alberta. He was the second son of (Loretta) Irene and (Leland) Lloyd Seely. He lost his father at an early age of four years. His mother later married John Moller and Don was raised in Rimbey, Alberta. It was there he married his wife, Leona Marlene Boyarzin in 1959. They had three children in Rimbey and then moved to Three Hills, Alberta in 1972 to pursue an oilfield business. It was here that their fourth child was born. In his earlier years, Don loved hunting, fishing, and playing cards. He was also a proud member of the Rimbey Volunteer Fire Department and the Three Hills Elks Club. He is survived by his four children: Lloyd (Tracey) Seely, Jacqueline (Richard) Hofstra, Daniel Seely and Michael (Gap) Seely as well as four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five siblings, Tena (Keith) Bland, Norma Taylor, Ed (Sally) Moller, Dave (Maxine) Moller, Ray (Cindy) Moller and Betty Moller. Don was predeceased by his wife, Leona; parents, Lloyd and Irene; stepfather, John; brother, Clayton; two step-sisters, Anne and Kay; and one nephew Kyle. A private family memorial will be held on July 7th, 2012.

In Memoriam

A Public Memorial Service in Celebration of Eli’s Life was held at the Rimbey Community Centre, Rimbey on Monday, July 2, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend Deborah Laing officiating. Cremation took place at the Central Alberta Crematorium, Red Deer. If friends desire, memorial tributes in Eli’s Memory may be made directly to Kids In Sports, Box 655, Rimbey, Alberta T0C 2J0; or to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Central Alberta Region, 5017 - 50 Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta T4N 4B2. We know there were many who took time out of the long weekend to set up and take down chairs, organize parking, arrange the lovely lobby display, transport and set up dozens of plants for the stage, set up the audio/visual equipment, and create the touching Eli Palm ‘locker room’ display, provide the thoughtful placement of seating at the Park, mow grass, make and serve lunch for hundreds of sad people, and clean it all up as we left. A special hug and thank you to the wonderful young men, Eli’s teammates, coaches and classmates, who took on the tough task of being present with all of us as we remembered him. This offer can be used in conjunction with most retail consumer offers made available by Ford at either the time of factory order or delivery, but not both.
