It’s not indefinite,” said Rawji. This service expansion does not replace the need for a doctor, it allows patients extra time to get in and see their doctor. “Once a pharmacist puts their name on it they must get in to see a doctor after that,” said Rawji. As of July 1, pharmacists can now administer medication through injections and initiate medication therapy, two services they couldn’t provide before. Initiation of medication therapy means that for a medical condition or situation a pharmacist can start a prescription and the patient must follow up with a doctor. However, for initiation, a pharmacist must have additional prescribing authority. “I believe the number will go up,” said Russell Cohen, executive vice-pres-

Zealous teacher receives Queen’s Jubilee Medal By Amelia Naismith He’s been to memorial monuments and war graves all over Europe and for the past eight years bring the spirits back to Ponoka. Ron Labrie, a social studies teacher at Ponoka Composite High School, received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal from MP Blaine Calkins Canada Day, at the Ponoka Stampede. Labrie was nominated by the Ponoka Legion and for him that was an experience in itself, but he didn’t think anything would come of it. Approximately two weeks before he received the medal, Labrie received a call from Calkins’ office stating he was being awarded. “When those kinds of things happen you’re very, very grateful. By Amelia Naismith A travelling vacation volunteer has recently returned from an eye-opening trip to Uganda with a heartfelt plea to her fellow Ponoka residents. Dawn Hallworth left on a volunteer trip to Sanyu Baby’s Home, an orphanage in Kampala, the nation’s capital, June 3 and returned June 26. Hallworth has volunteered in many different orphanages before, in Paraguay, Ethiopia, Nepal and Calcutta. It was in 2008 that Hallworth took her first volunteer vacation with Habitat for Humanity after a co-worker got her excited about the trip. Her next trip is in November, 2012 to El Salvador, where she will co-lead for the first time with the co-worker, Ray Vanderkooi. However, out of all the orphanages and builds Hallworth has been on, it was in Kampala that she found the best and worst situations she’s ever seen. “The orphanage was pretty much an amazing experience.” The orphanage had 53 children up to age four. Two of those children continue to run on little feet through Hallworth’s mind even after her return to Ponoka. Titus was a boy around two or three years of age. “He had me wrapped around his finger,” Hallworth said. According to Hallworth, Titus is a little boy with a big attitude. He’s headstrong and even though he’s just learning to walk, would plow his way around the orphanage. Titus would grunt and scream if he wanted something, but he never cried. Another favorite of Hallworth’s is Martin. “He showed up one night when we were there,” Hallworth said. “He was completely . . . his eyes were dead and he wasn’t responding at all.” Even when volunteers like Hallworth held him, Marin was limp and wouldn’t make eye contact. It took about a week for Martin’s personality to come out. When it did, Hallworth branded him cute and sweet but a little terror. With a laugh, Hallworth said she was always attracted to the bratty ones. Before Hallworth left the orphanage Martin’s father showed up after seeing his son’s picture in the newspaper and she was able to witness the bittersweet reunion between the boy and his father. Another child, nine months old, was brought in and was smaller than a newborn. According to Hallworth he weighed less than five lbs. “When he took off his clothes to change him the skin was just
Dawn Hallworth and David, one of her favorite children at the Sanyu Babies Home, share time together during one of Hallworth’s volunteer shifts. Photo submitted hanging off him. You could see every tiny little bone in his little body,” said Hallworth. “At nine months old he was starving. I honestly don’t even know how he survived.” Hallworth found it difficult to leave the children because it’s hard to know what will happen to them. There’s a policy in Uganda; even though many children are up for adoption some of them aren’t adoptable. Hallworth remembers a case where a girl in her mid-teens was raped and after she gave birth to the child, who’s now at Sanyu, she died. The policy states that as long as there’s a living relative a child cannot be adopted without written consent. The rapist is legal father of the child. No one knows where he is. Un-
til he’s found, admits he raped the girl, claims the child, and gives adoption consent the child can never be adopted. “You see all these kids and you see that they’re never going to get out of there,” Hallworth said. However, not every girl dies and not every child is abandoned. On the last day of her trip Hallworth was given a tour of the slums by three of the four founding members of AFFCAD; Action for Fundamental Change and Development. Hallworth saw girls as young as 14 and 15, with children, were prostituting themselves to make money. She was told the mothers would take the men to bed. Continued on page 14
Good news and a fair trade to help impoverished Ugh. The “pit of your stomach feeling” hit me recently when I came to the sad realization that I had purchased a discounted pair of pants made in Bangladesh. I had shopped at an outlet clothing store and found myself lured to Jerel Peters purchase a pair of khaki Wolf Creek Youth dress pants priced at Unlimited/YFC 50 per cent off. What a deal. When I got home I felt pleased with my purchase and confident that I had shopped well. They fit great, they looked good, and they were priced right. It wasn’t until afterwards that it struck me, the tag on the pants clearly says, “Bangladesh.” I was reading an article from World Vision entitled, “Shop for Change,” targeting child labor for clothing made in Bangladesh. Admittedly, I did not think at all about the ramifications of my shopping while I was in this particular store. In fact, it seems we (in North America) have this incredible ability to be naive or ignorant on issues of great importance that require great sacrifice — this is one of those areas. With my convictions emboldened I set out on a
quest to discover the policies and ratings of various stores and brands to better understand their impact on slave and child labor. Websites such as www. rankabrand.org , www.goodguide. com, and www.ethicalconsumer.org explain the environmental impact, labor conditions and fair trade buying guides to help shoppers make wise decisions. We have a responsibility to be an ethical consumer; making a choice to purchase goods or services that tries to address the harmful practices underlying the production and marketing of these goods and services. If it is possible, when I am shopping I need to think local, and fair trade. In the New Testament book of Luke, Jesus read to the people from the prophet Isaiah, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:18-19). This passage marks a profound proclamation. Poverty
deeply impacts political, cultural, and economic relationships, but here Jesus is declaring a new relationship with the poor and downtrodden. The words “Good News” are an understatement. Jesus’ love for the poor and message of Good News should completely impact the way that we live and love; it should change the way we shop; and it should impact the world we live in. The words in Luke chapter 4 are a message of hope in the face of poverty, but truly they are so much more than that. Jesus is offering himself as good news. His ability to reconcile man to God through his death and resurrection is the greatest news given to mankind. His death for our sin, not a very “fair trade,” but a reality worth clinging to in a world so full of poverty and uncertainty. While I cannot guarantee freedom from poverty I can shop to ensure I do not contribute to their bondage, and though it may not seem to be a very fair trade, I can accept the generous sacrifice of Jesus to redeem me from my spiritual poverty.

Reflections of Ponoka Celebrating a century of memories at the Ponoka Hospital By Mike Rainone for the News One of the major summer events for our Ponoka district, the province, and the nation in 2011 was the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Provincial Mental Hospital, now Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury. Many cherished memories of the steady growth, challenges, patient and treatment care, and ongoing successes have been proudly shared by former and present staff and community over all those exciting years. The Ponoka News enjoys presenting these milestone stories and photos in our weekly historical features of Reflections and Remember When? The occupational therapy department This active instructional and creative department started at the new Provincial Mental Hospital at Ponoka in 1924 in a tiny area near the operating room. Projects for the patients in the beginning included basketry, simple woodwork, and fancy work, and would grow steadily as space was made available and as patients’ skills were realized and encouraged. Under the early direction and leadership of Gladys M. Crysler, Rita Barnhouse, Elsie Scott, Mrs. Liddell and other enthusiastic staff, the program would become so popular a modern, separate building was opened in 1950. This shop included a shoe repair, upholstery department, and much more, and the Occupational Therapy Department quickly became one of the first of its kind on the continent, and would become internationally recognized for its inspiration and treatment successes! The garage and maintenance department This department was first opened in 1924 under the direction of driver/mechanic Harold Watson, who managed the rapidly expanding hospital transportation fleet until his retirement in 1952. From the humble beginnings of one large truck to pick up the provisions from the Canadian Pacific Railway station in Ponoka, the daily vehicle maintenance and fuel service grew over the years to include a school bus, fire truck, ambulance, and a number of trucks, vans, and vehicles that were used by all departments of the massive mental hospital. Some of the early drivers and mechanics based at this shop included Art Barnes, Reg Johnston, Sam Wills, Don Hill, Richard Stebner and Elmer Cerveny. The hospital communication system Nina Chalmers was the first person to operate the switchboard and information office at the hospital, and she held this active position from 1926 until her retirement in 1948. Over the years the communication system rapidly expanded, later being established at the administration/reception building and operating a complete daily service of accepting all incoming calls, extending information to visitors, and guiding them to all areas of the hospital to visit their relatives or attend various functions. The fabulous aromas of the hospital bakery A.E. Thorn was the first baker and cook at the Provincial Mental Hospital near Ponoka, and would serve in that position from 1911 to 1938. In the wee small hours of the morning, the massive steel ovens in that busy bakery were fired up to prepare the hundreds of loaves of bread and other culinary delights that would complement the varied diets for more than 1,000 patients and staff each and every day of the year. Hospital X-ray department was very important! It would be Mrs. George (Louise) James, the wife of the local “radio man,” who would serve as the first X-ray technician at the hospital from July 1940 to April 1946. As the PMH grew rapidly, this vital department expanded quickly, with all patients and staff required to have their annual X-rays as well as others required on the request of the medical staff. Other early staff members of this department included: Dorothy M. Burry (1946-1968), and Mathew Tharakan, with the long-standing able assistance of Winnifred Edney. The X-ray service continued for many years at the hospital, and then was later taken over by

The hospital laboratory John Onufrychuk was the first laboratory technician at the Provincial Mental Hospital, performing the duties from October 1924 to May 1946. George R. Watson came to work at the Ponoka hospital in November 1940, and resumed work on the nursing staff until taking over from Onufrychuk when he resigned in 1946. The popular gentleman worked for many years in the lab, was an active participant in the Alberta Civil Association, one of the promoters of the initial banking services at the hospital, an avid member of the hospital curling club, and he would raise his family on the grounds. The Fort Ostell Museum has a wonderful collection of the early artifacts, photos, and stories of the Provincial Mental Hospital, and invites everyone to drop in weekdays and browse through the colorful and exciting history of our town and county. Meanwhile, the longstanding dedication and traditions of first class professional treatment, special care, and understanding for each and every client continues on into their 102nd year at the Centennial Centre.

Here are Ponoka’s famous twins, Arthur and Allen Dickau celebrating their 20th birthday in 1942. The boys, the sons of Fred and Louise Dickau, grew up in and around our community, have made lots of friends, and last week they happily celebrated their 90th birthday. As we wish Arthur and Allen all the best, they would love to hear from old friends and neighbours, and I am quite sure that if you have been lucky enough to make their acquaintance over the years, that they never forgot when your birthday was.

Opinion Taxpayers will give Oda a $701K pension The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) estimates retired International Development Minister Bev Oda’s annual parliamentary pension will instantly start at $52,183, adding up to $701,464 by the time she reaches the age of 80. “Bev Oda’s lifetime pension should cover about 43,841 glasses of $16 orange juice,” said CTF national research director Derek Fildebrandt. “It’s wrong that she can collect $52,183 in annual pension benefits after only eight years on the job,” said CTF’s federal director Gregory Thomas. “Especially when the average new Canada Pension Plan monthly payment in 2012 is $534.10.” Under regulations adopted by cabinet, instead of investing pension funds
into the market, MPs simply pay themselves interest at the end of every quarter at a compounded annual rate of 10.4 per cent. The fund has grown by $69 million in the past 12 months and now tops $950 million. In 2010-11, taxpayers contributed $110.7 million, while parliamentarians chipped in $4.5 million, a $24.36 to $1 ratio. And the CTF estimates that taxpayers contributed $25.81 to the parliamentary pension plan in 2011-12 for each $1 that federal politicians contributed. “If Canadian’s don’t speak up this summer, MP pension reform will consist of little more than putting lipstick on a pig,” continued Thomas. “The prime minister must take real action and truly fix these outrageous pensions.”

New MLA busy getting to know the constituency It’s only been just six weeks and the constituency office is in full gear. Since my swearing in on May 15 there has already been a major list of accomplishments both provincially and locally. There is a new speaker in the Alberta Legislature. Gene Zwozdesky replaces long-time <LA Ken Kowalski. May 18 saw the opening of the local constituency office at #101-4892-46 Street in Lacombe. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays (closed over lunch hour). The phone number in that office is 403 782-7725. The Edmonton office is at 714 Legislative Annex, 9718-107 Street, Edmonton and that phone number is 780-422-1149. The spring legislative session opened May 24 with the speech from the throne, and the house sat until May 31. In that short time, we were able to accomplish the following: • We were able to convince the minister of culture to finally sit down with the Shen Yun Group . This group had been lobbying for a meeting with these officials for more than three years, to discuss their particular needs. • We exposed the government’s gag law of the Chief Electoral Officer and received a commitment from the justice minister to change it. In response to the Justice Major Report, MLA salaries have now been set at a flat rate, not tied to committees, and this shows transparency. This was done in the spirit of what the Wildrose party campaigned for. • We raised the alarm on low gas and oil pricing which will

drop the governments revenues, thereby making the budgetary allocations impossible to achieve because of the lack of foresight. We also brought home the fact that there is no plan of how to deal with these lower revenues. There has also been major discussion on Bill 1, which was introduced into the House during the sitting and addresses concerns about first responders and health Rod Fox related issues in that field. The fall session of the legislature will MLA Lacombe-Ponoka allow us more discussion on that particular issue. In the Lacombe-Ponoka constituency I was pleased to attend several great functions — everything from the Blackfalds Days Parade in early June, to the opening of the Lacombe skateboard park. It has also been my pleasure to attend the Ponoka Stampede and the parade. It was also my honour to speak at the opening of the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in Ponoka. I was also able to attend the presentation of the Diamond Jubilee Medal to two deserving constituents. In addition, I was pleased to serve coffee for the Tim Hortons Camp Day in support of the Tim Horton Summer Camp program, and par-
ticipated in McHappy Day at McDonald’s, also in support of less fortunate children. School tours of the Legislative Assembly have been both fun and educational for students in elementary schools. I was able to visit with several of these school groups as they made their way through the legislature. The DARE program graduation was another highlight of last month’s activities as was the 100th anniversary celebration of Burnco, who is a major employer in this constituency. High school graduations at schools in this constituency took place through the months of May and June and I have tried to send individual scrolls to those students who achieved the distinction of graduating from their respective high schools. Congratulations to all of those hard working students on their success and I wish them the best in their future endeavors. The coming month looks to be filled with lots of summertime activities for communities including Lacombe Days, the Mirror centennial, the Clive centennial, Alix Aloha Days, Westerner Days and lots more. I am looking forward to attending several of these events as time and scheduling allows and also look forward to meeting more of you in the communities that I am proud to now serve as your sitting MLA . It is my intention to be available to all constituents on an ongoing basis and invite you to contact the constituency office if you have concerns that you feel I can assist with.

Threatened by shooting Dear Editor: At about 11 p.m. on June 8, someone stopped their truck by my driveway and shot my Pyrenees dog. It was likely at nearly point-blank range. I was inside my house at the time and rushed out when I heard the shot. Sadly, I didn’t see the vehicle but it sounded like a pickup truck with a loud muffler. It drove away at high speed after spinning the tires in the gravel. I live in the country near Usona, and I know what “the code” is. If my dog’s making trouble, then I understand completely if it needs to be “dealt with.” But this happened in my driveway. I was just going to try to forget about things, but as time progresses, the absolute wrongness of what happened keeps sinking in. I had rushed my young dog to the vet, but he could not be saved. My thanks go to Dr. West for doing what he could. The next day, after some consideration, I thought I’d better let the RCMP know what had happened. Since there were no witnesses, of course, there is not much that they can do. That said, the RCMP member I spoke to was, indeed, surprised to hear of such a flagrant act, and confirmed that it is completely illegal, and not to mention reckless. Not the least of all this, of course, is that we lost a dear animal who had a heart of gold. Now I’m finding out how difficult this incident Dear Editor: I’d like to com- has been for my kids. Dear Editor: In response to last week’s letter from Lori Derry: I’m unclear as to who was defecating. Was it humans or dogs leaving their defecations around? Listen, lady, would it kill you to bend over and actually pick up some of this trash yourself, instead of turning your nose up at it, maybe throw it in a receptacle instead and do us all some good. The Ponoka Stampede is famous for loud music and good times. There are several Churches in and around town that are reasonably quiet for respectable people such as you. Leave the partying to us and we promise we’ll come back next year and spend even more money in your awesome little town. Meanwhile, you can have it back for the rest of the 358 days of the year. Canadian economy supports more workers With Parliament adjourned until Sept. 17, it is a good time to look back on what we’ve accomplished over the last year. By far, the number 1 story over the last year has been the economy. Since July 2009, Canada has created nearly 760,000 net new jobs, and more than 90 per cent of these jobs are full-time. We are also taking the steps to help businesses hire new workers, like extending the Small Business Hiring Credit — a direct,
practical way to help the businesses at the heart of our economy continue to grow and hire more people. Our government is also working to help Canadians take advantage of the jobs the Canadian economy is creating, linking workers with employers and supporting skills training. For example, the third quarter program, which is now being rolled out across the country, helps workers over 50, while the Youth Employment Strategy is supporting younger workers. We are taking steps to streamline environBIDS WANTED mental assessments so ACREAGE FOR RENT that projects aren’t held ALBERTA TRANSPORTATION up in red tape. LOCATION DESCRIPTION Within Lacombe County, 7 miles (11.2 km) west of Highway 2 on the south side of gravel Hwy 604. Paved Hwy 792 is 2.5 miles (4 km) west from acreage and another paved road travelling south to Hwy 12 is adjacent to the east boundary of the acreage. Legal description: part of NE 32-41-27-W4M. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Property is located on 19.8 acres with Gull Lake just minutes away to the west. The house is a 2011 modular home, as good as new. Floor space is 1530 sq ft and consists of kitchen/dining room, spacious living room, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. All bedrooms have walk-in closets and master bedroom comes with attached 5 pc bathroom. Kitchen appliances are included. Deck on south side of house. Site services: power, water well, propane, septic tank & field. The property is in a nice private rural setting with mature trees and open areas and is crossed by a creek. There is room for horses and cattle.
We’re taking action to move toward a goal of ‘one project, one review.’ This means that we won’t wastefully duplicate the work of provincial agencies, while at the federal level we are consolidating the number of agencies involved from 40 to MP Blaine three. Of course, we are Calkins looking out for law abiding citizens by abolishing the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry that wasn’t keeping Canadians safe, only criminalizing honest hunters and farmers. We also promised to pass the Safe Streets and Communities Act within 100 sitting days of this session of Parliament. We delivered on our promise. No more house arrest for serious and violent criminals; tougher sentences for sexual offences against

Canadians are outraged when the system appears to side with the criminal against the victim. We passed a bill to help make it clear what’s permissible in selfdefence and during a citizen’s arrest. We’ve also delivered support to ensure Canada’s retirement system remains sustainable for the seniors of today and tomorrow, while continuing to support our veterans and delivering tax relief for families, including the Family Caregiver Tax Credit, the Children’s Arts Tax Credit and the Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit. School desires memorial Continued from page 3 Labrie and his students work with the Fort Ostell Museum, going through old newspapers for any information. Sometimes they find a name, and if they’re really lucky, a picture. Ponoka Composite High School applied for funding for a memorial project for its Hall of Valor. “Our school has really embraced the Cenotaph Project, and consequently our Remembrance Day ceremony is one of the most important assemblies at Ponoka Composite. Labrie found that the more involved you get in a project like this the more its importance becomes magnified every year. “The mission at the end of the day is to get through everybody. You don’t want to forget anyone. You don’t want to disappoint anyone,” Labrie said Labrie has always been interested in history, but more specifically its military aspects. “Why these guys would unselfishly give themselves” . . . That’s his million dollar question. “They made the ultimate sacrifice, they didn’t come home.”

School in Ugandan slums seeks donations Continued from page 4
Kafuma Richard, Kisirisa Muhanned, Kristin Keenan and Dawn Hallworth stand in front of AFFCAD’s Excel Education Centre with one of the school’s teachers. Photo submitted
Come join us this Saturday! July 14th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm
The walls are rotting and the roof is full of holes. When it rains the building floods and on warm days there are so many bodies per room it’s suffocating. “These children are so excited to have the opportunity to learn. There are no complaints from them at all. However I believe they deserve more,” Hallworth said. AFFCAD had planned to raise $1,000 by June 5 to help with the reconstruction of the school. But they had only raised $195 last time Hallworth checked. “I think everybody in this town has the ability to give even $10, which is a huge deal to them,” Hallworth said. Hallworth said. Hallworth wrote a letter to the citizens of Ponoka. She wanted it to be published in Ponoka News. A portion of that letter said: “I had the humbling opportunity to visit the poorest area in Kampala, the Bwaise slums. This area is a death trap for many children, with unsanitary water, rampant disease and HIV, lack of food and commercial sex trade of children as young as 12, there is little hope for a better future.” Another portion read, “I have had the privilege of being born in a developed country. I did nothing to deserve this life, just as the children of Bwaise did nothing to deserve the life they were born into.” Current projects of AFFCAD include: the ASK Project, the Emebet Education Project (EEP), the Revolving Fund Project (RFP), the Right to Justice and Equality Project, and the Work Camp 2012. ASK Project is Answers, Solutions and Knowledge relating to HIV/AIDS issues. International student volunteers come to Uganda to conduct faceto-face training workshops with Kampala high school students about HIV/AIDS and reproductive health. The Emebet Education Project provides free education scholarships to 20 orphaned, neglected or vulnerable children living with or affected by HIV/ AIDS between the ages of three and 14. The project also provides caretakers with scholastic materials. The Revolving Fund Project works to empower women and families with entrepreneurial skills. Priority is given to caretakers for children and families affected by HIV/ AIDS. A $50 loan is given to develop a small scale business. Hydraulic fracturing has already The Right to Justice and Equality Project is been used in more than 175,000 working to build a health education campaign for sex workers. The projCanadian natural gas wells without ect aims to “increase self-esteem, worth and harming drinking water. involvement, to seek and maintain a standardized quality of life in context of the declaration of hu12072MC0 man rights,” says the AFFCAD website. AFFCAD also runs a pen pal project. Some of the kids are able to write to school classes overseas. “The kids really seemed to love this and where able to name their pan pals and where they lived. Hallworth said. “I was wanting to see if there was any class or teacher that may be interested in taking this up Dig deeper: in the new school year, To learn the facts about responsible preferably grade 4 or 5.” For more informaCanadian natural gas development tion about AFFCAD and go to morefactslessfriction.ca their projects visit www. affcad.org
“And these kids, like, this is their bed too, this is their home. They’re kicked out of their bed in the middle of the night all the time. They never get to sleep. They have to leave when she has a customer,” Hallworth said. “Sometimes they have to watch it, they have to hear it,” Hallworth said, tears in her eyes. The four founding members of AFFCAD, Kisirisa Muhammed, Kufuma Richard, Nyombi Jaffar and Muggaga Brian Baya, also grew up in the slums of Kampala. In Kampala and the Bwaise slums people have to pay for clean water. Those who live in the slums have no clean water or sanitary living conditions. “It’s really cool to see, when you grow up with nothing to want to give something back. I thought that was amazing,” Hallworth said, referring to the four men in their early 20s who have been friends since childhood. The four men, especially Richard as he went to university, had a chance to leave and better their lives. But their families live in the slums, including Jaffar’s, who was more than 30 siblings and his father, who has more than seven wives. Walking through the slums, Hallworth said everyone seemed to respect them but they joked around with people. Hallworth was impressed that despite what they’d accomplished they had no superior attitude. It was in 2009 the four men started AFFCAD. Their first project was a Christmas party they held for the children of the slums, complete with a Santa and gifts. Next they worked with a health clinic to talk about the spread of HIV and teach condom use to sex trade workers. In 2011 they created their Excel Education Centre. It consists of three rooms, 20 ft. by 20 ft. and each room holds more than 50 kids. Teachers are unpaid volunteers, so their attendance is sporadic.
More facts. Less friction.

CARRIER OF THE MONTH Congratulations to William Wareham
Dave Wilson of CEDA (left), Rick Wierzba (centre), Ponoka Stampede Association president and Neil McLaren, general manager at Ponoka Chrysler Jeep Dodge present the Stampede truck to winner Betty McMillen of Ponoka. Photo by Amelia Naismith
Winner nearly loses giveaway truck By Amelia Naismith The winner of the Ponoka Stampede Dodge Giveaway Truck almost let the vehicle slip through her fingers. Betty McMillen, the winner of the truck, had won two meal tickets from Bob Ronnie before the Stampede began. At the dinner the ends of her meal tickets were collected and put in the draw for the Dodge truck. Making her way to the grandstand during the Stampede McMillen tripped but she held on to her truck tickets. Once she made it up to the second
level the wind blew one of the tickets from her grasp. McMillen and her friend looked at each other. Because McMillen had just tripped, her friend made the long climb back down to retrieve the ticket before the wind took it farther away. To this day McMillen doesn’t know if it was the winning ticket that blew to the ground or the other one she had, but her friend predicted the one that hit the ground would win her the truck. Perhaps it did, perhaps it didn’t but in the end McMillen still has a new Dodge truck.

PONOKA NEWS Page 17
The joy of golf I have never been much of a golfer, but I admire all those who are, and really enjoy watching all those great pros going head-to-head each weekend on those fabulous and challenging courses throughout the world. It is hard to forget my early adventures as a kid chasing around the Ponoka Community Golf Course, and even though I golfed cross-handed and had a pretty mean hook, I could hammer the ball pretty good, and really loved to rub shoulders with everyone else out there having a good time amongst nature’s splendour. This week’s column is dedicated to all golfers everywhere, and no matter what each round may bring, please get the best out of your game, just for the great exercise and the fun of it all. • You may never have shot your age, but you have likely scored your cholesterol count many times. • You can hit a two-acre fairway 10 per cent of the time and a two-inch branch 90 per cent of the time. • The shortest distance between two points on a golf course is a straight line that passes directly through the centre of a large tree, and usually results in a stroll through the rough or a stop at the drink tent. • If you want to get better at golf go back and start at a much earlier age. Show the same respect for the golf course as you would for your own back yard, and please replace the divots. • Golf appeals to the child in all of us, as proven by the frequent inability to count past the number five, and insisting that your score pencil has a good eraser. • Does your idea of a super athlete include John Daly hitting a 350-yard drive, then heading off down the fairway sipping a frosty one with a cigarette dangling off his lip? • Always remember hazards attract and fairways repel. A ball that you can see in the rough 50 yards away is usually not yours, and if two balls are in the bunker, yours is likely the one in the foot print. • All golfers can usually put a nifty draw or a fade on their ball, but not too many can put a ‘straight’ on the ball. It’s surprising
Mike Rainone Hammertime how easy it is to hole a 50-foot putt when you are lying 10. • Every golf match is a test of your skill against your opponent’s luck. The difference between a whiff and a practise swing is that nobody curses after the practise swing. • Always make sure that you yell ‘fore’ before the body hits the ground. I don’t enjoy playing video golf because there’s nothing to throw. One of the first commandments of golf is that thou shalt not imitate a stunt driver in your golf cart, and that thou shalt not pick up a lost ball until it stops rolling. • If profanity had any influence on the flight of the golf ball, most everyone would play better. Golf is a lot harder than baseball, because in golf you have to play your foul balls. • Golf is the only sport where the most feared opponent is yourself. Always remember that the game of golf is 90 per cent mental and 10 per cent self-induced. • In 1923 Gene Sarazen won most of the important golf championships available at the time, including the United States Open and the coveted PGA title. He played until he was 92 and died at the age of 95, and was financially solvent at the time of his death. Moral of the story: Stop worrying so much about finances and start playing more golf. • A man’s boss phoned one afternoon and asked him if everything was OK at the office. He assured him that although it was so busy and he was rushed off his feet, he had it all under control. “Can you do me a favor?” the boss asked. “Of course, what is it?” the man asked. “Speed up a little, because I’m in the foursome behind you!” • Beverly was a 90-yearold veteran golfer who had played every day since her retirement 25
years ago. One day she came home and informed her 103-year-old husband she was quitting golf because although she could still hit the ball straight and long, with her bad eyesight she can’t see where it went. Her husband insisted despite his age his eyesight was perfect, and she could continue to play the game she loved if she took him along to be her ‘ball spotter.’ So next day the happy senior couple headed out to the course together, and on the first tee she hit a mighty drive down the fairway, then turns to her husband and asks, “Did you see the ball?” “Of course I did,” replied Gus. “I have perfect eyesight,.” “Then where did it go?,” Bev asked. “I don’t remember,” he sheepishly replied. • Funniest golf joke of the week comes as husband and wife watch their cruise ship sink out of sight. “When you put your golf clubs into the lifeboat ahead of me, I knew where I stood in this relationship,” she uttered. Think summer and sun, and have a great week, all of you!

Practise sun, heat safety Ponoka-area residents heading outdoors this week are reminded to protect themselves and their families from the harmful effects of the sun. With rising temperatures, there is an increased risk of heat-related illness such as heat exhaustion or sunstroke. “Temperatures are forecast to hit the high twenties and even low thirties this week. We want to remind residents to take precautions to stay healthy and safe,” says Dr. Digby Horne, medical officer of health for the central zone of Alberta Health Services. To avoid sunburns and heat-related illness, Dr. Horne recommends: • Applying a sunscreen of at least sun protection factor (SPF) 30, at least 20 minutes before going outside. Be sure the SPF 30 screens out both UVA and UVB rays, and reapply frequently. • Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses (with a UVA/UVB CSA certified seal). If possible, wear light-coloured long pants and long-sleeved shirts that cover skin. • Drinking lots of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated. Dr. Horne also urges parents and caregivers to never leave a child alone in the car.
“Leaving children in cars, for any minute length of time, can cause dangerous overheating.” If you feel dizzy, nauseous and faint, you may be suffering from heat exhaustion. Drink plenty of water and get into a shaded area. Hot weather can also cause heat stroke. Symptoms include high body temperature, lack of sweat, disorientation, fainting, and unconsciousness. Move the person to a shaded area, remove their outer clothing and shoes, wrap them in a wet towel, and get medical attention as soon as possible. These guidelines are particularly important for individuals who are at greater risk of suffering from a heat-related illness, such as young children and older adults. Excessive heat may also aggravate underlying medical illness such as congestive heart failure. “Residents need to pay attention to their bodies. Normal activity that is safe on a cool day might be dangerous for you on a hot day. If you start to feel overheated, stop your activity immediately, seek shade and drink fluids,” advises Dr. Horne. To speak to a registered nurse 24 hours a day, seven days a week, residents can call Health Link Alberta, toll free at 1-866-408-LINK (5465).
Pre-launch event for Keep it Real campaign The Town of Ponoka and MKM Marketing will host a branding prelaunch event at 5 p.m. July 18 at the Kinsmen Hall. There will be a general agenda but everyone is welcome to drop in between 5 and 7 p.m. Sarah Olson, economic development officer, said MKM will begin with a reminder presentation of what branding is and why it is important to Ponoka. This will be followed by a review of what MKM heard from the public in the visioning session and stakeholder interviews. “They will also present an overview of the Keep it Real campaign and the branding strategy behind it,” Olson said. “They will explain the creative and people will get a sneak peak at upcoming promotional materials. The evening is meant as connecting point with the community and will provide opportunities for feedback and for the community to connect with the town’s brand and our programs.” Branding started with a meeting last winter to get an idea of how residents feel the town should be marketed.
Feedback also came from interviews with businesses and community leaders. The dominating theme will be the idea of authenticity and the slogan, Keep it Real. Research from the project showed residents wanted to be known not just for being a rodeo town. The brand is designed to show that Ponoka is a place where people can be true to who they are. Although some nominations have been received, there is one last chance for people to nominate their neighbor for the contest. We will also introduce the shoot date and the local photographer for the winner’s professional photography session. There will be forms for the Pride in Your Property contest, where you can nominate yourself or someone else for best kept or most improved properties for a chance of winning free utilities. There will also provide opportunities to participate in the summers end global video shoot, introduce the open air market and pop up shop ideas.

Swap to Stop doubles success By Amelia Naismith Swap to Stop, a campaign aimed at reducing tobacco use in rural communities and by rodeo athletes, improved its campaign and found success at the Ponoka Stampede. Between 2,000 and 2,300 people attended the three booths and took information for themselves or a family member. Also, 12,000 units of Nicorette gum were given out. “We were very pleased with the rodeo” said Laura Fitzgerald of Alberta Limited and a campaign organizer. Fitzgerald said the team made contact with double the amount of people they had at the Grande Prairie Stampede. According to Fitzgerald this is because there was more information available at the Ponoka Stampede and it went for longer. People they’d seen in Grande Prairie came to talk to them at Ponoka. Fitzgerald said. “Word of mouth played a big part in it.” The campaign team also went out into the crowd to talk to those who they’d seen often. Fitzgerald said conversations on the subject were more open at the Ponoka Stampede. Also, compared to Grande Prairie, Fitzgerald
found that Ponoka had a smaller smoking section. She said her team actually had to find the smokers when they arrived. “Ponoka’s much more careful in how they plan,” Fitzgerald said. “That Ponoka rodeo was unbelievable.” Swap to Stop is planning to go to the CFR, but because of the success of the campaign they want to attend other summer rodeos.

The Lacoka Servus Credit Union Junior lacrosse team travelled to High River on July 7 and 8 for the tier III provincial championships. The Locos, who finished the regular season in third place with a 9-5 record, took on the second-place Brooks Drillers (9-3-2) in the first semifinal, while the first-place High River Heat played the fourth-place Calgary Wranglers in the other semifinal. Brooks opened the scoring at 17:27 of the first and scored again at 13:48 to put the Locos behind the 8-ball early. Trevor Anderson scored at the 8:24 mark on a nice pass from Doug Wing to make it 2-1 but Brooks scored two more in the first to lead 4-1 at the end of one period. Skyler Sargeant scored an unassisted goal to made it 4-2 at 15:31 of the second. Brooks answered that goal less than a minute later to again go up by three. The
Lacoka team then scored back-to-back goals 14 seconds apart by Mack Hawthorne, assisted by Anderson and Reed St. Denis to make the score 5-4. Brooks added one more with 3:21 to go in the period to lead 6-4 after the second period. The Locoka Juniors, despite being out-manned, came out strong in the third, playing solid defence and strung together three goals in 80 seconds to take a 7-6 lead. The first, by Braeden Grant came from Sargeant and Hawthorne on the power play at 11:16; Sargeant got his second of the game at 10:38 on a nice individual effort and Grant got his second from Anderson and Hawthorne 10 seconds later on a nice break off the faceoff. Brooks battled back with the tying goal at the 9:05 mark. Hawthorne responded less than a minute later with his second of the game from Jayden Hubbard

Locos turn game around at provincial championship Continued from page 20 to again go up by one and then scored their ninth goal of the game another minute later on a nice quick stick goal by Taylor Wass from Sargeant on the power play to make it 9-7. Brooks would not go quietly as they battled back to make it 9-8 with 4:28 remaining and then scored the tying goal on the power play with only 1:37 left in the third period. The two teams then played a full 10-minute overtime period that saw some terrific goaltending at both ends of the floor and no scoring. The Brooks team pulled off the victory in this exciting back and forth game 25 seconds into the second overtime period for the 10-9 win. The victory put the Brooks team into the gold medal game against the host High River Heat, who defeated the Calgary Wranglers 12-4 in the other semifinal, leaving the Locos to play the Wranglers for the bronze on Sunday. Lacoka goalie Zac Atsinger, an affiliated midget player was named MVP for the Locos. In the bronze medal game on Sunday, the Wranglers scored first at the 16:39 mark of the first but Sargeant replied at the 13:59 mark to even the score at 1-1. The Wranglers went ahead at 11:57 and Hawthorne
replied 30 seconds later to tie the score at 2-2. Again the Wranglers went ahead at the 10:59 mark and again the Locos would tie the game on a goal by St. Denis from Hawthorne at the 9:24 mark. For a fourth time the Wranglers would go ahead at the 6:33 mark only to have Carter Waldbauer score on a great individual effort at 5:45 to once again tie the game. Calgary would add two more to lead 6-4 after the first period. Coach Wes Amendt must have said something to turn things around as the Locos came out in the second playing a tighter defensive game. The Lacoka boys scored four in a row in the second on goals by Hawthorne, St. Denis from Luke Andreeff, Sargeant from St. Denis and Hawthorne this time from Wass to take a 8-6 lead. The Wranglers managed a late goal with only 29 seconds left in the period to close the gap to 8-7. That was all the Wranglers would get as goalie Zac Atsinger closed the door and the Locos added four more in the third period on goals from Grant, Wass (2) from Hubbard and Sargeant, and Sargeant getting his third of the game unassisted to close out the scoring for the 12-7 win and the bronze medal.

Cancer survivor has zest for life By Jeff Hansen St. Albert Gazette The biggest victory for lacrosse player Carter Makofka was beating cancer. On Oct. 18, 2010, Makofka was diagnosed with stage 3S Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which meant the cancer had gone through his lymph system and into his spleen. The next day he started chemotherapy, but was later classified as a rapid responder. The fourth and final round of chemotherapy ended on Dec. 29, followed by the 14th and last radiation treatment on Feb. 25, 2011. In March, his one-year post-treatment tests came back clear and cancer free. An emotional Makofka described his battle against cancer as “overwhelming.” “It’s been a long one, a hard one. It not only took a toll on me but on my family too,” said the teary-eyed Grade 8 student at Mecca Glen School east of Ponoka. Makofka’s story inspired his bantam B head coach, Curtis Huchkowski, to nominate the Lacoka Locos’ creaseman for consideration for the Jeremy Richardson Memorial Trophy. It’s presented annually at the Jeremy Richardson Memorial Baggataway Tournament hosted by the St. Albert Rams Lacrosse Club. “I’ve had the pleasure of coaching him for six years now. He has shown dedication, perseverance, hustle, leadership and a zest for life that cannot be matched. His smile lightens up the room and is a constant source of entertainment,” said Huchkowski, who had to compose himself several times during his speech at the recent award presentation. “Carter is an incredible young man who always has a smile on his face and a passion for life. He is very positive, hard working and an instrumental part of our team. He has not once said he can’t make a practice or a game even if he’s completely exhausted from his battle with cancer.” The Rams renamed their annual tournament in Richardson’s memory and dedicated a trophy in his honour after the former St. Albert Saints’ hockey player and Rams’ lacrosse product died of malignant melanoma on Nov. 5, 2005 at the age of 23. Richardson’s parents, Mitch and Robin, wife Gillian, and sister Jordie presented the trophy, a new lacrosse stick and a gigantic chocolate bar from Mayor Nolan Crouse to Makofka after the Locos defeated the Sherwood Park Titans en route to their gold medal triumph in the tournament. “I’m very honoured,” Makofka said. “I went through a tough time and I know what he went through.” Multi-sport star Richardson grew up in St. Albert excelling in lacrosse and hockey. The high-scoring forward was instrumental in the Saints reaching the Alberta Junior Hockey League final in 2003. He also played a pivotal role on one of the first junior teams the Rams put together. Richardson also played three years of junior
Carter Makofka of the Lacoka Locos bantam B lacrosse team, is the recipient of the 2012 Jeremy Richardson Memorial Trophy. Making the presentation to the cancer survivor was Richardson’s dad and mom, Mitch and Robin, Richardson’s wife, Gillian, and sister Jordie. lacrosse as one of the top scorers with the Edmonton Miners and was named MVP in a game at the 2003 Minto Cup national championship. He was also the first Ram to be drafted in the National Lacrosse League, selected in the third round, 27th overall, by the Calgary Roughnecks in 2003. That same year in August, Richardson was diagnosed with stage 3 malignant melanoma and underwent multiple surgeries and treatments at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. When the treatments were exhausted, he participated in numerous clinical trials over 18 months at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Md. Richardson said the happiest day of his life was marrying Gillian Rauw on Sept. 3, 2005. Two months later he died. The Miners dedicated their 2006 season to Richardson’s memory and retired his No. 23 jersey, the first number retired in team history. They also renamed the team’s offensive player of the year award in his honour. It was a bittersweet moment for Makofka’s parents, Niki and Kyle, to witness the presentation. “Under normal circumstances it is an honour, but the fact that both Carter and Jeremy and our families share this cancer connection really makes this award even more personal,” Mrs. Makofka said. “We are thankful that Jeremy and Carter have more things in common than both of them receiving devastating cancer diagnoses. They both have traits which include determination, spirit, and of course, a love for lacrosse.” Loves lacrosse Makofka was anxious to get back on the floor with the Locos, a combination of players from Ponoka and Lacombe, despite the treatments. “I love the sport. I love the coaches and I love the players. They’re great guys,” said the sixth-year lacrosse player who made his bantam zone team for the 2012 Alberta Summer Games. Niki said there were concerns about how the side effects from the treatments would affect her son.
“Carter was determined to play and we knew he just wanted his normal life back,” she said. “His coach, Curtis, said should I hold him back and I said, ‘No. Let him do what he wants to do.’ He went for it and has never looked back. He didn’t miss a game or practice to any sickness or ill effects of his treatment plan and managed to score points in each game he played that year even though there were times he was feeling exhausted and short of breath.” Mrs. Makofka said sports gave her son something to focus on other than the treatments. “It helped make him feel like a normal child. It was the thing he could count on and put his energies into,” she said. “Throughout his treatments he lost his hair, which he said was the hardest for him, but he stayed in school. His grades went up. He was the leading scorer on his basketball team all throughout the treatments, even with his bald head. His teammates were incredible to him and he had a lot of school support from his teachers and principal. They all really rallied around him.” Makofka’s positive attitude played a major role in the war against cancer. “It helped him and our family (including his sister, Callie) survive the diagnosis and treatment. It didn’t take the nurses long to figure out that Carter was a funny, outgoing kid. Every day we saw him, no matter how terrible he was feeling, he would smile and make the nurses laugh when they came in to take care of him. He never once asked, ‘Why me?’ His motto was, ‘OK, let’s do this.’
Mrs. Makofka stressed the personal attention her son received at the Edmonton Children’s Stollery Hospital and the Cross Cancer Institute helped make a difference. “They gave him such excellent care,” she said. “He is not out of the woods yet, and it doesn’t sound like he is ever out of the woods necessarily, but he will be tested every three months for the next two years and then every six months. We actually have a 20-year plan of testing for him. “He is good now and we just keep moving forward.”

Talented athletes to attend Summer Games By Amelia Naismith Ponoka’s talented athletes are gearing up to attend the 2012 Alberta Summer Games, July 26 to 29 in Lethbridge. Up-and-coming triathlon star Zoe McCormick is going to the Games for the first time this year. McCormick grew up watching her sister have a lot of success in the sport and four years ago she put on her swim suit, donned her helmet, and laced her shoes for the first time. When McCormick came in second at the Sylvan Lake Triathlon she knew she was going to be heading south this summer. “I was happy. I was surprised,” McCormick said. McCormick loved the sport from the beginning. “It challenges me a lot.” But she didn’t always have the success she’s now achieving. In the beginning McCormick didn’t train much. “I wasn’t placing really well. It just hurt a lot more because I wasn’t training.” In March McCormick joined the True North Triathlon club in Red Deer to help her train for the Summer Games. She attends the club twice a week. “It’s really fun. There’s really good people involved.” Now McCormick swims five times a week and goes for either a run or biking too.
McCormick usually races against around 40 girls, there will be about 20 in her only race during the Summer Games. “I’m more nervous because the people are better. It’s more competitive,” McCormick said. McCormick isn’t the only one excited for her upcoming race, her mother is too. “I’m excited for her to be a part of it. It’s neat to see her having success in it.” Now that the Games are approaching ,McCormick feels she needs to train even more. “I don’t know how good the people are,” McCormick stated. Lacrosse player heads south for summer Lacrosse player Carter Makofka will also be going to the Games for the first time. Makofka started playing lacrosse seven years ago after attending a Calgary Roughnecks game. “It just seemed like a fun sport to play,” Makofka said. “I like the intensity of it.” Makofka was told he was going to the Summer Games after a game in Didsbury. “I’m so excited.” “I think it’s quite an honour to go play at the summer games.” And Makofka isn’t the only one from his team going south this summer. “The team’s very proud,” Makofka
said. Softball player slides into Summer Games Zone 4 softball player Carmen Lomas will attend her first Summer Game; she went to the Winter Games for volleyball. Lomas has been playing softball since she was five or six. “I enjoy the competition of it.” During her first year Lomas played on a boys’ team. “They liked to bug me a lot,” she said, chuckling. Lomas’s mother signed her up for Summer Game tryouts. Her first one was in March and her second in June. Lomas knew the night of her second tryout that she was heading to the Games. “I was really excited, I couldn’t stop smiling.” Lomas has already hit two home runs this season, but when it comes to the Games her stomach isn’t always as steady as her bat. “Sometimes there are butterflies. I try to calm myself down but is doesn’t always work.” But not knowing about the competition is something that excites Lomas and she can’t wait to meet new people there. Hector Ibarra of Ponoka is attending the Alberta Summer Games for soccer. Nicole Dupuis, James Wood and Mikayla Tolsma, all from Clive, will also compete in the Summer Games.

By Amelia Naismith Another class of barrel racing students recently got the opportunity to climb into the saddle and learn from one of the best. Last week legendary barrel racer and clinician Charmayne James, as well as Heather Heath, were at the Ponoka Ag Event Centre teaching the finer points of barrel racing at a clinic hosted by Lisa Nault. “The clinic’s going really good. People are working hard and really paying attention to what they’re doing with their eyes and hands and body,” said James. “They’re a great bunch, real willing to learn.” James did her first clinic in 2001, in Brazil. There were 40 students, most spoke Portuguese and had interpreters. “It was a great way to break into clinics,” James said. James had a passion for helping horses and the riders. With the clinics she’s bringing to the masses the style of riding that brought her so much success. Another big part of James’s success was her partner Gills Bay Boy, known to the rest of the world as Scamper. Scamper took his last ride to greener pastures and died July 4. “He was tough. He was the toughest horse that ever lived. We miss him,” James said. But Scamper will never really be gone. Five years ago James cloned him and Clayton was brought into the world. After Scamper the bloodline would have been lost, that’s what made James decide on cloning. “We’re just really glad to have those bloodlines passed along,” James said.
Zoe McCormick races along the final event of a triathlon so fast she spills her drink.

WILLIAMS Pat (Woodfin)
July 7th, 1919 - July 6th, 2012 Our beloved mother, grandmother and best friend passed away peacefully on Friday, July 6th, 2012, one day prior to her 93rd birthday. She will be fondly remembered as a kind and loving person who always thought of others first. Born in Vegreville (nee Stroh) and moving to Stony Plain at an early age, she was the youngest of 6 children. Upon completing school she moved to Saskatoon where she met and later married Gerald Woodfin in 1944. To this union there were born three children: Larry, Donna and Brenda. Pat lived in Saskatoon raising her family until Gerald passed away in 1961. In 1966, Pat married Ron Williams of Ponoka. She continued to reside in Ponoka, following Ron’s death in 1973, devoting her life to her children, grandchildren and friends. She leaves to mourn her children and their families: Larry and Sandy Woodfin of Ponoka, Donna and Dale Camp of Falun and Brenda and Ralph Zilkie of Wetaskiwin; her step-children Don, Lorne and Ken Williams and their families; as well as numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews; and special friends Evelyn and Jim Dunham and Noreen Johnson. Mom is finally at peace. She will always be remembered for the caring and kindness she gave to everyone. If desired, memorials can be made in her name to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of individual choice. At her request there will be no funeral service and she will be interred at the Woodlawn Cemetery (Military Field of Honor) in Saskatoon. The family would like to thank Dr. Halse for the care he provided to our mother for the past several years, as well as a very special thank you to the staff of the Ponoka General Hospital for the wonderful care provided to our mother. WISE BUYERS READ THE LEGAL COPY: Vehicle(s) may be shown with optional equipment. Dealer may sell or lease for less. Limited time offers. Offers may be cancelled at any time without notice. Dealer order or transfer may be required as inventory may vary by dealer. See your Ford Dealer for complete details or call the Ford Customer Relationship Centre at 1-800-565-3673. ‡Ford Employee Pricing (“Employee Pricing”) is available from June 14, 2012 to August 31, 2012 (the “Program Period”), on the purchase or lease of most new 2012/2013 Ford vehicles (excluding all chassis cab and cutaway body models, F-150 Raptor, Medium Trucks, Mustang Boss 302, and 2013 Shelby GT500). Employee Pricing refers to A-Plan pricing ordinarily available to Ford of Canada employees (excluding any CAW-negotiated programs). The new vehicle must be delivered or factory-ordered during the Program Period from your participating Ford Dealer. This offer can be used in conjunction with most retail consumer offers made available by Ford at either the time of factory order or delivery, but not both. Employee Pricing is not combinable with CPA, GPC, CFIP, Daily Rental Allowance and A/X/Z/D/F-Plan programs. ‡‡No purchase necessary. For full contest rules, eligible vehicle criteria, and to enter as a Ford owner, visit www.ford.ca/shareourpridecontest (follow the entry path applicable to you, complete all mandatory fields and click on ‘submit’). Subject to the following terms and conditions, contest is open only to residents of Canada who have reached the age of majority, possess a valid graduated level provincially issued driver’s license, and are owners of Ford branded vehicles (excluding fleet customers and all Lincoln and Mercury models). Eligible vehicle criteria includes requirement that it be properly registered in Canada in the contest entrant’s name (matching vehicle ownership), and properly registered/plated and insured. Notwithstanding the foregoing, non-Ford owners can enter by mailing an original 100 word essay on “what they like about Ford”, with their full name, full mailing address, email, daytime phone number (with area code) to: Vanessa Richard, Pareto Corp., 1 Concorde Gate, Suite 200, Toronto, ON, M3C 4G4. Contest closes at 11:59pm (PST) on the last day of the 2012 Ford Employee Pricing campaign which will be no earlier than August 31, 2012. Limit of 1 entry per person. Up to 8 prizes available to be won in Canada in 3 possible prize categories, each worth up to CAD$50,000. Chances of winning are dependent on the total number of entries received up to each 10,000 interval of unit sales under the Employee Pricing campaign (“Draw Trigger”). Odds of winning decrease as the contest progresses, more entries are made into the contest, and opportunities for Draw Triggers lessen.
