The St. Mary’s Indian Band will beneÂżt from the fourth round of funding from the First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund with equity funding of $200,000. “Biomass thermal heating systems are particularly advantageous to people in our region. Here we are able to make use of poor quality wood that is unÂżt for lumber and keep people warm at the same time. I wish the St. Mary’s Indian Band every success with this project,â€? said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett. Project details: • These funds will support the construction and operation of a biomass thermal heating system. • The system will initially hook up two buildings with future plans to hook up the entire village. • The project will remove the use of natural gas and decrease thermal energy payments to users. • The St. Mary’s Indian Band has over 5,000 hectares of dense conifer forest and proposes to supply the heating system with waste-wood chips. It will also provide the band with an opportunity to receive revenue through woodchip delivery. “When Bill Âżrst gave me the call I wasn’t sure what to expect, but when I learned we were granted the full amount we requested I was thrilled. Today is a really great day for the St. Mary’s Band. Now we can move forward with some of the more detailed work and get the system in place,â€? said St Mary’s Indian Band Chief Cheryl Casimer. Including the most recent May 2012 intake, the fund has provided almost $2.5 million to 53 Aboriginal communities across B.C. to support First Nations participation in the clean energy sector. This funding is from the fourth call for applications. The next intake of applications closes at the end of September 2012. The First Nations Clean Energy Business Fund promotes increased First Nation participation in the clean energy sector through: • Revenue-sharing from eligible clean energy projects based on revenues derived from water rentals and land rents;

Members of CUPE 2090 in Cranbrook are issuing a challenge to other unions in the East Kootenay to get behind East Kootenay Foundation for Health’s drive to bring a digital stereotactic mammography unit to the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. Last week CUPE 2090 President Mike Capuano invited Donna Grainger to stop by to pick up $1,000 with greetings from each municipal-
ity worker in the City of Cranbrook who made a donation to the worthwhile cause. “When we ¿rst brought up the thought of supporting the A Clear View campaign we soon realized that almost every member had in one way or another been impacted with a loved one, friend or someone they know facing breast cancer. It was a unanimous decision to make this important gift,” shares
Capuano. It is just over 10 months since EKFH started it work on the mammography campaign and thanks to so many individuals, organizations, service clubs, corporations and fundraising events the goal has just touched over the $825,000 plateau. Marion Emily Miller (nee Phelan) March 7, 1915 - July 1, 2012
Marion passed away peacefully at 97, after a life filled with family and friends, a professional career, participation in her community and commitment to numerous organizations. She was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, but spent most or her life in New Westminster. Tenth of eleven children and the last survivor of that generation, she cherished her brothers and sisters, and loved her many nieces and nephews dearly. She was predeceased(2006) by her loving husband of 64 years, George Frederick. Over the years, they kept a home which welcomed everyone and worked together to give their 6 children opportunities they had never had. They loved the cabin they had built by hand at Boundary Bay. Marion was an active member of Our Lady of Mercy Parish, a hard working volunteer and an aware citizen (from school parent groups to Century House, from fund raising campaigns to "political" goals like trying to save St. Mary's Hospital). She made friends at any opportunity and kept them with care and interest. Mildred was her best friend for over 80 years but she met others everywhere and, until a few months ago, had all their phone numbers memorized. Marion was a secretary/stenographer for several lumber companies and an executive secretary prior to retirement. Marion will be dearly missed by her children Don (Linda), Wendy (Terry) Killoran, Marnie (David) Ridout, Colleen (Ray) Branson, Bernie (Michael) Burroughs, and Heather (Ed) Weel, 19 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Marion spent her last two and a half years in Cranbrook and the family would like to thank the staff at the F.W. Green Home for their dedicated care. We would also like to thank Susan Priest, her hospice friend for her many kindnesses. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, August 14, 2012 at St. Bernadette's Catholic Church in Surrey, B.C. Condolences can be offered to the family at www.mcphersonfh.com

Food and seasonal allergy treatment Last week I wrote about two different types of allergy that commonly occur to both food and environmental agents: TILT and atopic allergy (I’ll write more about atopic allergy next week). TILT stands for “toxicant induced loss of tolerance and is an acquired allergic reaction that is caused by a single or combination of toxic exposures. In my practice I have seen TILT triggered by an overgrowth of Candida albicans, a yeast that grows in the body, exposure to heavy metals like mercury, household toxins including cleaners, pesticides, herbicides and environmental toxins and medications like antibiotics. TILT occurs when the body is exposed to a toxic compound that is so irritating or in such a large dose that the body cannot detoxify sufficiently. In very sensitive individuals the exposure can be small and still create a severe allergic reaction. Often this type of allergy develops over time as exposure to toxins accumulate and finally the body hits a
point where it can no longer manage the toxic load and an allergy appears, seemingly out of nowhere. Sometimes the reactions are very mild and passed off “bad digestion or just being sensitive to smells or pollens. Other times the result is severe and the person has what is called multiple chemical sensitivity and is intolerant to perfumes, smoke, fumes and just about any chemical you can think of. All of these types of reactions in TILT are caused by a body burden of toxic compounds that trigger the immune system to be overactive and hyper-vigilant. Key to treating toxicant induced loss of tolerance allergy is three-fold: minimizing or stopping the toxic exposure, stimulating detoxification and desensitizing the body to the toxicant induced allergens. Simply managing the symptoms with anti-histamine, antiinflammatory or other medication does not address the underlying toxicant-induced cause of the allergy.

Stepping it up a notch A backyard can look very bare when the snow disappears, but it is a great time to discover all sorts of new possibilities. If your lot lies on varying natural ground elevations, you may be tempted to give a new look to your property by dressing it up with some steps. The choice of materials to be used will depend on the style of your home. You might choose brick, cut stone, river stone, marble, slate, concrete, or even wooden logs. Once the materials are purchased, construction of the steps can begin. Don’t worry: this is a lot less technically challenging than building an inside staircase. The ¿rst thing to do is to stretch a cord around the area to de¿ne where earth has to be removed to carve out rough steps. By de¿ning individual steps you will create a sort of grid. Using a spade, shape the steps, thus creating the base for your structure. If you want to be precise about the rise and width of this outdoor stairway, consult your local hardware store experts for recommended measurements or visit the do-it-yourself aisle at your library or neighbourhood bookstore. Before positioning your materials it is important to prepare the ground and strengthen the base of each step with packed sand or with a layer of poured concrete on a bed of crushed stone. If you’re doing this work in the spring, be sure not to work at temperatures below 5°C or the concrete will not set properly.

Valley & Visitor 25thAnnual AnnualAppreciation Appreciation Day Day -- July July 21, 21, 2012 2012 Vistor 25th A quarter-century of visitor appreciation by Steve Jessel It’s been 25 years since the ¿rst Valley Appreciation Day (or Alberta Appreciation Day, as it was known), and as the years have passed the festival has grown in leaps and bounds, which is exactly what original organizer Bill Cropper had always hoped for. “We knew this thing had giant potential,” Cropper told The Valley Echo. “We more and more began to realize we needed to be more proactive with what we offered here.” Cropper ¿rst moved to the valley from Vancouver some 40 years
ago, after a treeplanting excursion led him to discover the immense beauty of the Kootenays. Roughly 15 years later, as a local businessman who relied heavily on the tourists visiting the valley, he and his former wife decided they needed to have an event that not only celebrated visitors, but also gave them things to do when they came. In collaboration with the Invermere Business Committee, the idea of what was then known as Alberta Appreciation Day was born. “It was extremely hokey, and the valley was pretty hokey,” Cropper joked. “We were a
pretty unsophisticated group... but it was fun.” Turnout to see the collection of musical acts, clowns and artists started relatively small, but with each passing year
the crowds continued to grow. After ¿ve years, Cropper estimates they had about 1,000 people attend, and at its most popular he said they could easily get 5,000
people out on the streets. What made the festival unique at ¿rst was the absence of any commercial interests, as Cropper said that making money wasn’t the aim of the

Cropper, who was responsible for putting together the entertainment, also started to branch out in terms of the acts he hired. One particular act, a pair of German accordion players who had just arrived from Chicago, gave Cropper one of his fondest memories from his years with the festival. “I think they were scheduled [to perform] at 11:30 a.m., and we’d set up a stage in front
of the Invermere Inn,” Cropper recalled. “So 11 a.m. rolls around, and I said, ‘Where’s the two German guys?’ Somebody went into the bar, and there they were, at 11:15 in the morning drinking beer.” Volunteers attempted to convince the two men to come with them to perform, but the Germans indicated with their small amount of English that they were busy with their beer. “So [the volunteers] went back into the bar, picked up the little round table and their mugs of beer and said ‘Follow us,’” said Cropper, laughing. “And so here comes these two German guys marching down the street wearing their lederhosen and with their accordions. We put their beer table on the stage,
plunked down their beers, and then they’d play... they were following the beer.” While the festival had its rocky moments the ¿rst few years, Cropper credits an extremely hard-working group of about 20 core people that really kept it moving. Cropper also would like to note Norm Gagatek’s contributions, who from day one was involved with the technical side of the festival. “I couldn’t have done it without Norm; there were always glitches and problems and Norm always ironed them out... he was a genius when it came to electronics,” said Cropper. “We surrounded ourselves with some of the more positive people in the valley, like the Lions’ Club, and the Rotarians, and

lati, and then to Pothole Park. “We were always looking for the ultimate location,” Cropper said. After about 10 years, the organizing committee decided to change the name to Visitor Appreciation Day, as they felt the previous name was too exclusive for visitors coming from outside Alberta. As the years went on, the name evolved to Valley Appreciation Day, something Cropper feels was a necessity to reÀect the changing focus. “It’s morphed itself,” Cropper said. “Valley Appreciation Day seems to encompass everyone, from visitors to our locals. It had to continually grow and evolve, and I think it did steadily.” Eventually Cropper decided to leave the organizing committee after 18 years, in part to focus on his own business, which at the time was booming. “I decided I’ve run with this thing for a number of years, it’s been very successful, and I’m proud of my part in it, but it’s time to press on and allow some new people in to open it up even further,” Cropper said. “I’m really glad I did because it did exactly that.” He remains impressed with the direction the festival has headed and although he hasn’t had much time to explore recent festivals, he said he’ll make a special effort for this year’s 25th anniversary. “I think it’s really important that we carry an attitude of inclusiveness, and I think Valley Appreciation Day has done a really good job of that,” Cropper said. “I think, in these times, it’s really important that we focus on things like this event... we are a tourist destination, and we de¿nitely need to provide our visitors with entertainment and a positive view of the valley.”
