Ed Huitema, 86, has spent the last year living with the reality of his new situation, having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease barely 10 months ago.

hen Ed Huitema first noticed his hands shaking he thought over 40 years of hard work as a gas welder were the cause. The 86-year-old Warfield resident had been a capable and healthy man his whole life, able
to handle anything that came his way as he raised his family in the village west of Trail. But he wasn’t prepared for what doctors told him 10 months ago when he was initially diagnosed with what is known as Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder caused by
a loss of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is necessary as it is essential to control the way messages travel from one nerve cell to another. It affects parts of the brain controlling voluntary movement such as walking, writing, throwing a ball or buttoning a shirt.

The graduation rate for Grade 12 students has dropped in School District 20 by nearly 10 per cent within the last academic year, according to recent results from a B.C. Ministry of Education Foundational Skills Assessment (FSA). After a high of 354 students graduating in the 2007-08 school year, the amount of students graduating in the district dropped to 297 during 201011, with the percentage of graduates dropping from a high of 86 per cent in 2007-08 to 80 per cent last year. The drop did not go unnoticed by school district hierarchy. “Yes, there is a concern,” said Darrel Ganzert, the board of trustees chair. “But I think it’s important to look at trends, especially if they’re repeating for two or three years in a row. Personally, I do not respect those (FSA) tests at all.” The FSA is an annual assessment of student achievement based on reading, writing and numeracy results. Ganzert explained that his concerns with the FSA test are because the provincial test often covers topics expected to be taught to students throughout the entire academic year, some of which students have not been exposed to before it takes place. According to Ganzert, it can also include questions about curriculum that are no longer part of the provincial teaching requirements. He explained that some students intentionally miss the test. However, the province indicated that very few exceptions are made for student absences. All Grade 4 and Grade 7 students are also expected to participate in the FSA and this year roughly 84 per cent of students province-wide participated in the assessment. “With my background, I do not like them for valid reasons,” Ganzert said. “Teachers are not afraid of testing, we test all the time but we use standardized tests and rely on homegrown resources that are more valuable for planning. Like work-

ing groups of teachers who meet up to discuss problems and solutions regularly.” Local flavour While the remainder of the province met or exceeded expectations in this year’s FSA, the annual assessment of student achievement in reading, writing and numeracy does not carry much weight by school officials in the Greater Trail region. Ganzert explained that declining numbers and resources should trigger some tough decisions from the community, and he is optimistic about finding solutions to problems during the upcoming facilities review this fall. “Don’t take the (FSA) seriously,” Ganzert said. “We rely on other forms of testing that we think are more valuable. The future looks very bright for SD20, FSA’s are a fairly minor plan of what we have in place for planning and they continue to be part of it, but we rely on other homegrown information too.” Students are tested regularly, but teachers write questions in a way that broaches topics they have covered more accurately.

LOCAL Disease worsened after Parkinson’s diagnosis FROM PAGE 1 It is also essential for involuntary movements including control of blood pressure and bowel function. Loss of dopamine can control moods and thoughts. For Ed, his shaking hands were his first indication something was not right. After he was diagnosed and had done some reading, he figured he had been dealing with the disease for at least three years. “It kind of hit me between the eyes, he said. “I didn’t really know what Parkinson’s was all about. But once I found out, it started getting worse. Confusion and frustration reigned for Ed and his wife, Ann, as the symptoms of the disease escalated. He found it difficult to eat and had trouble using utensils to bring the food to
his mouth. Reading proved to be a challenge as it was difficult to turn the pages with the loss of arm strength. “Your brain is telling your body to do something and it is not doing it, he said. “You are kind of embarrassed because you think people are noticing how you are struggling to eat. Although Ed had been diagnosed less than one year ago, the symptoms of the disease had been there for years: difficulty signing his name; no endurance; he shuffled when he walked; and sometimes he would freeze and he would tremble. But Ed decided not to take medication and instead saw Dr. Warren Fisher in Nelson and is now under a regime of acupuncture. Since then, the trembling has decreased considerably.
“It’s an uphill battle. You have your good days and your bad days, he said. “It’s a crazy disease and everybody is different. Ed said attending the Trail/Castlegar Parkinson Support Group was very helpful to share challenges and current information on Parkinson’s. The Trail/Castlegar Parkinson’s support group meets every third Tuesday of the month in the Colander, Trail at 11:30 a.m. For further information contact Renice Townsend at 250-367-7437. The Parkinson Society of British Columbia can also be contacted at 604662-3240 or 1-800-668-3330. “I am struggling with Parkinson’s and each day is an acceptance that Parkinson’s is my reality, he said.
Transfers over opponent’s notrump You will hear of many defenses against an opponent’s notrump. This is because one tries to open the most descriptive bid of one notrump as much as possible. This includes any balanced distribution with the shortest suit an unstopped doubleton. A hand with two stopped doubletons and not five four in the majors can also be opened one notrump with 15 to 17 points. Names such as DONT, Cappelletti, Landy, Hello and many others will add to the confusion of what to do against one notrump bid by the RHO. Some play a defense against notrump in the direct seat or pass-out seat. I play a system in the direct seat only. The danger of being doubled is considerably less when right hand opponent has passed. The simplest system is natural overcalls and double showing 15 to 18 high card points. The next simplest is transfers. This places the notrump bidder on the opening lead. Sometimes, it is very beneficial making the notrump opener lead from his strength. If LHO opens one

Play Bridge notrump, two clubs transfers to two diamonds, two diamonds transfers to two hearts, two hearts transfers to two spades and two spades transfers to three clubs. The bidding: West, in first seat, with 17 high card points opens one notrump. North has something useful to say because he has a long suit and wants to make his shortness in clubs useful. He bids two hearts transferring South to two spades. East and West have nothing to say and South plays two spades. The contract: Two spades by South The opening lead: King of diamonds East has an easy opening lead of the king of clubs. West’s lead is a difficult lead. He wants to find his partner’s strength.
ROSSLAND IS STILL OPEN FOR BUSINESS!
If his partner is on lead, things are simple because his partner knows to lead from his strength. The weaker the player is, the more important it is for him to lead from any suit containing his only strength. Transfers made sure West is on lead. The play: Declarer ducks and West continues into South’s ace and jack. This is known as the Bath coup. Bath England was a stronghold of whist which is just bridge without the bidding. West should see East’s low card on his king and switch to a club. West continues a diamond mostly because he does not want to break open another suit for the declarer. South wants to set up his clubs for discards but the defense won’t let him. East gets in with a club and leads a heart. Declarer will lose a spade, two hearts, one diamond and one club. The result: Two spades making for +110 Note: Do you have a question or a hand of note that occurred at your bridge table? If yes, send it to me at wt.watson@

REGIONAL THE SEARCH CONTINUES
Crews face dangerous conditions pinpointing remaining slide victims THE CANADIAN PRESS JOHNSONS LANDING - Safety of the recovery teams and a realistic chance of finding any other victims are the two key issues as the B.C. Coroner’s Service takes command at the scene of a massive mudslide in southeastern B.C. Coroner’s spokeswoman Barb McLintock says an assessment is underway and Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe is in the Kootenay hamlet of Johnsons Landing where the slide tore through on July 12, engulfing three homes. McLintock says although weekend rain and unstable ground has complicated recovery efforts, crews are optimistic they will find 64-year-old German visitor Petra Frehse and sisters Rachel Webber and Diana Webber. A body, believed to be that of 60-year-old Valentine Webber, was uncovered near the foundation of one of the devastated homes Sunday afternoon, giving crews a better idea of where to look for his 17 and 22-year-old daughters. Meanwhile, damage assessment is underway in the southeastern B.C. resort community of Fairmont Hot Springs, northeast of Cranbrook, after a new slide Sunday afternoon sent boulders, trees and mud spilling through the centre of town. No one was hurt, but about 100 people have been displaced while four properties are damaged, a hillside hotel was evacuated and campers at a nearby RV park remain stranded after a bridge washed out.

The Johnsons Landing landslide is shown in this Thursday July 12 photo.
One person rescued after mudslide hits Fairmount THE CANADIAN PRESS FAIRMONT HOT SPRINGS - At least one person has been rescued by a helicopter after a mudslide in the village of Fairmount in southeastern British Columbia. Police say there was an immediate response to the “large scale” slide which also closed parts of Highway 93 in both directions. RCMP Const. Dan Moskaluk says crews are on site and continue to assess the situation. The slide is in the same region as a massive landslide that wiped out three homes in the hamlet of Johnsons Landing on Kootenay Lake. The body of one of four people missing in that slide was found on Sunday afternoon, causing the rescue mission to turn into a recovery operation. Heavy rain and a late snow melt have caused havoc across the Kootenays this summer, with flooding and mudslides taking place as many rivers and lakes in the area reached a 40-year high.
Hot weather continues to bake the region but a record amount of rain fall earlier in the year is still managing to keep the current forest fire season as one of the slowest ever. Last year the Southeast Fire Centre— which includes the Greater Trail region— had the slowest fire season on record in 50 years with 132 fires and 62 hectares burned. At this point last year there were only 28 fires, but the current wet Kootenay weather is threatening to break that pace with only 26 fires having burned to date. Although those fires have doubled the number of hectares burned already compared to last year (166 ha. to 62 ha.), there probably won’t be a surge in forest fires this year unless the weather adds dryness into its hot mix, said Southeast Fire Centre fire information officer Karlie Shaughnessy. “If we see a lot of hot dry weather over the next few weeks we could see a (campfire) ban,” she said. “But there is too much moisture still in the duff.” All of the thunder and lightning storms have been accompanied by large amount of rain, she added, with no dry lightning storms causing forest fires. On Friday, July 13, all category two and three open fires were prohibited
within the Southeast Fire Centre to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. The prohibition will remain in place until Wednesday, Sept. 19, or until the public is otherwise notified. Specifically, this prohibits the burning of any waste, slash or other material, the burning of stubble or grass, and the use of fireworks or burning barrels of any size or description in the areas outside of municipal boundaries. Open burning is not allowed in the City of Trail, as are fireworks. The prohibition does not include campfires, gas or propane cooking stoves or briquettes. This prohibition also does not apply to a resource management open fire, including those conducted for agricultural purposes. Campfires must not be larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres in size. People lighting a campfire must maintain a fireguard by removing flammable debris from around the campfire area and must have a hand tool or at least eight litres of water available nearby to properly extinguish the fire. This prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of local governments that have forest fire prevention bylaws and are serviced by a fire department.
“Please check with civic authorities for any prohibitions before lighting a fire,” said Shaughnessy. Environment Canada predicts the uncommonly hot weather that has swept through the West Kootenay and across many provinces in recent days is here to stay. “The longer range models are still indicating that we can expect to see, all the way from the foothills of Alberta, through Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritimes, warmer than normal conditions for the rest of July and August,” says Geoff Coulson, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada in a Monday Canadian Press article. Coulson says the heat increases the chance of thunder storms, such as the one that struck an Ontario community on the weekend. Seventeen people were sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries on Sunday after lightning struck a tent at a local food festival in Whitby, Ont. Despite a series of powerful storms moving across the U.S. and Canada, Coulson says that such weather is nothing out of the ordinary. “This is traditionally our busy time of year when it comes to this type of weather,” he says, adding that the U.S. typically sees about 1,000 tornadoes each year, and Canada about 80.

Premier talks tough on Gateway BY DIRK MEISSNER THE CANADIAN PRESS
VICTORIA - British Columbia’s premier is promising to use the province’s status as an intervener at National Energy Board hearings to press Enbridge Inc. (TSX:ENB) for answers about its proposed $5.5 billion Northern Gateway pipeline, though she continues to insist she’s not ready to answer the thorny question of the province’s position on the project. Clark has been increasing the rhetoric about the Northern Gateway proposal since a U.S. report last week that was highly critical of Enbridge’s response to a pipeline spill in Michigan. She continued that tough talk on Monday, promising to outline areas the province has concerns about later this week but again dodging questions about whether her government will ultimately support the project. “What I said was, ‘Wait a few days and you’ll find out more about what we’re going to be doing with respect to intervening in the process,”’ she said. “I would urge patience.” Clark said B.C. government officials will pose questions about the project at the ongoing federal joint environmental
approval review panel hearings, where the province has intervener status. “We want to understand the impacts of this,” she said. “We want to know the potential benefits and the potential risks of this proposal.” The federal regulatory hearings, which started last January, are set to conclude in April 2013. An environmental assessment report on the project is due in the fall of 2013 and a final decision is expected by the end of 2013. Clark defended her government’s decision to participate in the hearing process as an intervener and not as a government. She said registering as an intervener allowed B.C. to gather up-to-date information, including the recent U.S. National Transportation Safety Board report, which detailed the environmental devastation caused by a massive oil leak from an Enbridge pipeline along Michigan’s Kalamazoo River. “As an intervener, we’re going to be asking questions about this (Northern Gateway) project and we’re also going to be asking about some of the questions that arise from the NTSB review,” said Clark. “We are going to be putting some
tough questions to the company as we get into these hearings based on what we see in that (NTSB) report.” Clark said intervener status allows the province to cross-examine Enbridge and present a closing argument. Opposition New Democrat environment critic Rob Fleming said Clark should have told British Columbians long ago whether the province supports or opposes Northern Gateway. The NDP says it does not support the project and is looking for ways to put up legal roadblocks if it forms government following the May 2013 election. “She owes people a lot more than some kind of update on why her government continues to take a non-position on this project,” Fleming said. “The Christy Clark government has been totally missing in action on this project.” Environment Minister Terry Lake said intervener status allowed the B.C. government to build an inventory of information it needs to make an informed decision on the project. He said the Michigan spill report will become part of the province’s line of questioning for Enbridge. “It affects the landscape, no question, when you have a report like that,” Lake said.

Prosecutor named in fatal stabbing of man linked to Lt.-Gov. THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA - A special prosecutor has been named to investigate a fatal stabbing in Kamloops in which the victim was the estranged son-in-law of B.C. Lieutenant Governor Stephen Point. Twenty-nine-year-old Jessie Seymour was killed in a stabbing during a fight at a house party early Sunday morning. Twenty-nine-year-old Torbin Alec is charged with second degree murder. The Criminal Justice Branch says Kamloops lawyer Robert Bruneau has been appointed as the special prosecutor in the case because of Seymour’s relationship to Point and to avoid any perception of improper influence. As special prosecutor, Bruneau will provide independent oversight of the case, including reviewing the charge approval process, offering advice to the police and handling prosecution of the accused and any subsequent appeal.

Family remembered after mudslide THE CANADIAN PRESS JOHNSONS LANDING, B.C. - As young girls, Diana Webber and her little sister Rachel would trek into the bush in British Columbia’s remote Interior for overnight camping trips. It made their mother nervous, but their outdoor-loving father cheered them on. As they grew, Diana would grab a map, pick a random spot and navigate there, while Rachel was busy making friends with just about everyone she could in their hometown of Johnsons Landing, a tiny hamlet in southeastern B.C. The sisters’ next plan was to travel to an historic island near Ireland this fall, sleep in shuttered stone cottages and then depart by sailboat. The adventure was to serve as inspiration for a documentary they planned to make together. Instead, their relatives are left mourning the lost futures of 22-year-old Diana, 17-year-old Rachel, and their 60-year-old father, Valentine, who were killed along with a German traveller when a massive landslide tore through the area last Thursday. The body believed to be Valentine Webber was recovered on Sunday, when police and searchand-rescue officials acknowledged there was no hope anyone survived the landslide. His daughters remain missing, as does German national Petra Frehse, 64, who was a longtime vacationer in the community. The RCMP and the BC Coroners Service confirmed Monday afternoon the remains of a second person, a female, had been located. The person’s identity was not released. The Webber sisters had a tight relationship, recalled their older cousin, Karen Jenkins. Diana spent time in Los Angeles writing screenplays, but she recently returned to the hamlet to spend part of the summer with her family. Rachel had just graduated high school in Kaslo, a small town located across the Kootenay Lake. “They lived the dream,” Jenkins said Monday, noting Rachel and Diana grew up dividing their time between their mother’s home in Florida and their father’s idyllic home in Johnsons Landing, northeast of Nelson, B.C. “That gives you a crazy awesome imagination for writing, as well, and you get a close bond with your family. The things in life that are important to you aren’t necessarily going to a 9-to-5 office job.” The girls’ father, Valentine, was an Irish man named after the saint whose birthday he shared, said Jenkins. He was an excellent sailor, who built the family home with his own hands and felt completely at ease living mostly alone in an isolated part of B.C. “It’s like he went with Mother Nature,” said Jenkins, 37. “That’s how I find peace and closure and acceptance. He wanted to be in the wilderness and he was with the people he loved the most.” Jenkins described Rachel as funny and creative. She loved to dance and act. She listened to Bob Dylan and the Beatles and loved films and photography from the 1970s. “She was really wise and ahead of her time,” said Jenkins. “She and her sister were very close, they would relate and joke about that. They were older souls.” The last time Jenkins saw Diana was last September. The cousins took a road trip to the Grand Canyon in Arizona, taking a 4 a.m. shuttle out to a spot where they were left to meditate over the expansive scenery. But Diana scrambled over guard rails and down an escarpment into an out-of-bounds area to find her own serene space on the side of a cliff. Despite the risks, Jenkins couldn’t help but follow over the railing. “Her purpose on the planet was to just take it on, take on the world,” Jenkins said. “She was not afraid to do things. She was already travelled.” The BC Coroners Service took command of the disaster scene on Monday as the operation shifted from a search for survivors to a search for bodies.

NATIONAL Global economy weakens, Canada grows: IMF BY JULIAN BELTRAME THE CANADIAN PRESS
OTTAWA - The International Monetary Fund is calling for further government action amid signs the recovery is faltering in many countries, although Canada’s outlook has held up better than most other advanced economies. The 188-country organization said Monday that it expects Canada’s economy will grow modestly - by 2.1 per cent this year and 2.2 per cent next year. The 2013 projection is unchanged from the IMF’s forecast in April while the 2012 projection has been increased by onetenth of a percentage point. That’s not the case in many parts of the world. The IMF’s July outlook warns that, after a better-than-expected start to the year, growth is slowing in many parts of the world, shaving two-tenths of a point off of the IMF“s 2013 estimate, which falls to 3.9 per cent. The 2012 growth estimate has also been reduced, by one-tenth of a point to 3.5 per cent. The expansion is mostly due to strong, if moderating, growth rates in the emerging economies and smaller advanced economies, such as Australia. Overall growth in advanced economies is only expected to hit 1.4 per cent this year and
1.9 per cent in 2013, very weak levels, with some nations faring far worse. Some countries in the euro area are in recession and at best can expect minuscule growth next year, the IMF says. The United States growth projected at 2.0 per cent and 2.3 per cent in 2012 and 2013, one-tenth of a point less than before and not enough to decrease unemployment. Even emerging market expansion is moderating because weakness in Europe and U.S. is dampening demand for their exports. But it is not a few percentage points of gross domestic product that has the Washington-based economic watchdog most concerned - it’s the rising risk that Europe will go off the rails, and to a lesser extent, the U.S. as well. It particularly singles out Italy and Spain, which it says must be prevented from collapsing. “More worrisome than these revisions to the baseline forecast is the increase in downside risks, Olivier Blanchard, the IMF’s chief economist, said in a webcast press conference. “Italy and Spain have to succeed, he added. “They have to do what’s needed to succeed, they have to do the adjustment in competitiveness, which is tough, they have to do fiscal consolidation, which is
tough. “But that’s not enough, they are in a very deep hole (and) they need help from other euro members. In addition, the IMF says the U.S. must avoid at all costs an abrup withrawl of fiscal stimulus. And emerging economies should be on the watch for signs of trouble and prepared to take action. The IMF does not mention Canada in its analysis, other than placing it in the table of economic projections. Canada places No. 2 among the Group of Seven countries in terms of growth, with Japan at No. 1 this year with 2.4 per cent and the United States in top spot at 2.3 per cent growth in 2013. The Canadian growth rates forecast by the IMF are below the Bank of Canada’s call of 2.4 per cent both years, but in line with most private sector economists, who have been downsizing expectations the past few months. Analysts expect the Bank of Canada will also shave its outlook at the next opportunity, which comes Tuesday morning during its policy interest rate announcement. That would signal that the central bank, which had been hinting of raising interest rates later this year, likely intends to stay on the sidelines until 2013 at the least.
New monitoring sites sought for oilsands THE CANADIAN PRESS FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. - The federal and Alberta environment ministers are getting a firsthand look at oilsands monitoring sites around Fort McMurray. Peter Kent and provincial counterpart Diana McQueen are touring two sites being built in response to demands for better environmental oversight in the oilsands region. Several dozen new sites are being added to better keep track of what impact industry development is having. A plan for how monitoring will be governed, how much independence it will have and who will fund the work is expected to be released in the next few weeks. There are already scientists in place setting up new sites. Kent and McQueen announced a radically revamped oilsands monitoring plan in February. It came after years of criticism from scientists and others that the provincial government was doing a poor job of overseeing environmental changes caused by extensive energy development in northern Alberta. Those charges fuelled increasing opposition to the oilsands both in Canada and abroad. That opposition has grown to the point where it is now affecting the province’s attempts to increase its energy exports. The ministers outlined a three-year plan that aims to increase the number of monitoring sites by more than 50 per cent.
Fewer home resales in June in a more balanced market BY LUANN LASALLE THE CANADIAN PRESS
The number of Canadian homes sold last month dropped more than four per cent from the level in June 2011, the first year-over-year decline in sales volume since April 2011, the Canadian Real Estate Association said Monday. Resales of homes were also down 1.3 per cent in June from May - the second month-tomonth decline - with a total of 46,444 transactions through CREA members. That was down from 48,591 in June 2011, the association said. “Canada’s housing market lost a little altitude in June, but it’s still flying pretty high, association president Wayne Moen said in a news release. “That said, sales activity and average prices bucked the national easing trend in a number of markets, which underscores that all real estate is local, Moen said. The national average home price in June was $369,339, down 0.8 per cent from the same month last year, CREA said. Prices increased in Calgary, remained strong in Toronto and continued to slow in Vancouver. However, CREA
said its MLS Home Price Index - which the association says is a better measure because it adjusts for different types of properties sold - increased 5.1 per cent between May and June 2012. There have been several reports saying some real estate markets and some types of housing are over valued, although there’s a range of opinions about how much and how quickly prices will 5)& ,005&/":n4 05& &/":n4 0/-:
decline. Economists and consumers have been closely watching for signs that demand has softened to the point where prices will start going down. But the association, which represents realestate boards and associations that handle most of the country’s property transactions through the MLS system, said Monday the decline in sales activity and an increase in
new listings resulted in a “more balanced national housing market in June. The number of newly listed homes rose 1.4 per cent in June compared to May, led by the Toronto market. Some 42 local markets, out of 100 markets across the country, registered a monthly increase in new listings of at least
one per cent, the association said. RBC senior economist Robert Hogue noted the resale market eased again in June but the number of homes newly listed for sale rose 1.4 per cent last month. “Market conditions, therefore, eased a little, providing more breathing room for Canadian
buyers, Hogue said in a research note. “Despite this easing, the demand-supply equation continued to be balanced in the majority of markets in Canada. The Vancouver market inched closer to conditions favouring buyers, Hogue said. In the first half of 2012, a total of 257,193 homes traded

B
y the time you read this I should be in Vanderhoof, the geographical centre of B.C., to visit relatives. Born in the Okanagan, raised in the Peace country and working for 20 years in Metro Vancouver, I’ve driven from one end of the province to the other more times than I can count. A similar trip last year began just as a huge mudslide was cleared near Chilliwack. Other drives have featured mid-summer hail piled 10 centimetres deep on the Coquihalla, a near miss between two moose in the Pine Pass, plus the usual blizzards and hundreds of traffic jams for construction, accidents and growing urban volume delays. This time I’ve got a new tool on board, the mobile version of DriveBC.ca on my BlackBerry. Launched two years, ago, the mobile site has taken off with
TOM
FLETCHER B.C. Views the surging popularity of smartphones. In the past year, DriveBC’s online traffic averaged 1.2 million visits a month, about half to the five-year-old desktop site and half from mobile users. It’s by far the most popular B.C. government website. I asked DriveBC technical leader Nainesh Agarwal for these stats, and he said even he was surprised by the surge in mobile traffic in recent months. But trying out the mobile site, it’s easy to see the appeal. With a few clicks, the
phone displays incident reports and web camera images for my chosen route. Webcams have been added steadily all over the province, and now watch 18 key locations on Vancouver Island, 93 in the Lower Mainland, 73 in the Southern Interior, 35 in the North and 13 at CanadaU.S. border crossings. At a glance, you can check anything from the traffic at the Lions Gate Bridge to the lineup for the Skidegate ferry on Haida Gwaii. Most pictures update every two minutes, offering a real-time look at traffic, weather and road conditions. A recent addition is “replay the day,” which shows the last 24 hours of pictures in a few seconds. Another new feature is an email alert that can be customized. You can subscribe to a particular region or highway and receive notices as soon as they are
posted to the DriveBC network. And of course there is an @drivebc Twitter feed, where between 6:30 a.m. and midnight, staff update conditions and respond to inquiries. (Major events are automatically tweeted overnight.) Verified reports are fed from highways staff and contractors all over the province and co-ordinated through the provincial highways condition centre in the Lower Mainland. It’s become a primary source of information for radio and TV traffic and news reporters around B.C. The mobile service now has an option for drivers to report new problems they encounter. After determining your smartphone’s location, the site displays the name and phone number of the local maintenance contractor who can take the report. For those who haven’t joined the smartphone era, there is an old-fashioned
option. Dialing 5-1-1 anywhere in the province gives access to a toll-free line that connects to recorded DriveBC messages. Agarwal said use of that service has been declining as phones with web access become more popular. The 5-1-1 service also requires you to use the keypad to select your route from a numerical list, so drivers would have to pull over rather than breach the new restrictions on using handheld devices while driving. The 5-1-1 system still gets surges of heavy use during major events like the recent flooding. The plan is to upgrade the system to allow voice recognition, so drivers can use headsets to get updates on the move. Study finds viewers turn to YouTube for news video, disaster footage BY JAKE COYLE THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
A new study has found that YouTube is emerging as a major platform for news, one to which viewers increasingly turn for eyewitness videos in times of major events and natural disasters. The Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism on Monday released their examination of 15 months of the most popular news videos on the Google Inc.-owned site. It found that while viewership for TV news still easily outpaces those consuming news on YouTube, the video-sharing site is a growing digital environment where professional journalism mingles with citizen content. “There’s a new form of video journalism on this platform,” said Amy Mitchell, deputy director of the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. “It’s a form in which the relationship between news organizations and citizens is more dynamic and more multiverse than we’ve seen in most other platforms before.” More than a third of the most-watched videos came from citizens, with half from news organizations, but footage in those videos sometimes incorporated footage shot by YouTube users. The Japanese earthquake and tsunami was the most-viewed news event during the length of the study, which spanned January 2011 to March 2012. The top videos from Japan included footage from surveillance cameras, a news network and a Japanese Coast Guard vessel - a typical variety of sources. Such dramatic events were often among the most watched videos. Other popular news events included the Russian elections, unrest in the Middle East, the collapse of a fair stage in Indiana and the crash of an Italian cruise ship. “One of the things that emerges here is the power of bearing witness as a part of a news consumption process,” said Mitchell. The results depicted both reasons for concern and encouragement for traditional news outlets. While citizen journalism accounts for a large slice of viewership on YouTube, its users are also eager distributers of professional news video. The study shows YouTube as a global news arena where professional and amateur video bleed together, and is made consumable in on-demand style. Online: http://www.journalism.org

A big band thank you To the Editor: On behalf of the St. Albert Community Band I would like to thank the 300 plus members of the audience during our recent concert in Trail. I especially thank Ray Masleck and those members of the Maple Leaf Band who joined us on stage. I t was great to have Maestro Ray Fuoco conduct a couple selections, and for me especially, to have a dear friend, Jackie Vellutini, play with our group throughout the evening. So many memories went through my mind as we prepared for the concert, and after it was all over, I cannot wait till we hopefully can return
once again. To those of you who attended, in spite of the rain and changed night and venue, your support was sensational. I was able to visit with so many who I grew up with, who knew my family, and with whom I worked and played. As I said on stage: “My dream was fulfilled”. Thanks also at this time to Breanne Massey of the Trail Times news department for her great stories and promotions. We hope to return once again in the future. Till then, Gerry Buccini President, St. Albert Community Band
Political border restructuring debate knows no bounds To the Editor: Re: Open letter to West Kootenay residents It seems like the people who make decisions far away in Ottawa don’t quite understand B.C. nor do they understand the importance of physical geography in such a mountainous place. They look at maps with demographics and populations and what they have is an impression of where we live, but not how we live or what our communities really look like. It’s disappointing that Elections Canada would break apart our West Kootenay Community and place the entire area surrounding Nelson into the East Kootenay Region just to shuffle numbers. Rather, to gain those number for the East KootenayComumbia riding they ought to have looked toward a northward expansion, taking in more communities in the Rockies (their geographic neighbours). Our riding of the SouthernInterior already is too broken by geography and to loose a major West Kootenay town will diminish the voice of West Kootenay residents in their own ridings. The breaking apart of our voices will shift focus to areas not our concern. Larger population centres in Cranbrook will dominate discussion for Nelson and the South Okanagan will weigh too heavily, drowning out the needs of Trail, Castlegar, or the Boundary area. It’s sad to see that Ottawa’s officials wouldn’t even consider our community as a whole. The people of the West Kootenay
deserve to be represented in ONE riding without splitting our cohesive voice. We share concerns for regional health care, regional transportation needs (like our struggling airports which will not get any attention from people in Cranbrook or Penticton), and we have common desires which would be split by larger centres elsewhere unless we stand together. Our voice will be lost in Ottawa because of this split. Our region deserves better. If we were all to be represented as one entire East and West Kootenay community (leaving out other areas like the Shuswap or the South Okanagan) that might make sense, or if we were to be represented as is, by a riding which spans all of the Southern Central BC at least we can affect the way our MP speaks for us, but when we’re broken, our region is not going to be heard. It’s extremely frustrating to know that bureaucrats in a far off place would not even study the issue enough to know that our three major towns comprise one diverse but spread out city. Our population as a whole is like that of Vernon or other moderately sized cities. Our two regional districts show the extent to which our area should be held as one unit. The history of co-operation between our communities to hold festivals, to build regional infrastructure, etc. is what should be looked at before splitting our vote between two other areas who have no direct concern for our well being here. I argue that if we were to be
best represented in Ottawa, we need one voice together, and most likely combined all together with the Southern Central Interior. Our transportation corridor has more to do with our riding than “as the crow flies” concepts based on maps that don’t show how long it takes to get from A to B. The Highway 1 route bypasses us, and Highway 3 links us, so our riding ought to reflect that. It’s really quite simple. So simple, in fact, that I hope we all stand up and reject any proposition to divide our community. Make your statement at the community meetings: • Nelson, Best Western Baker St Inn Tuesday, Oct. 2, 7 p.m., and; • Castlegar Fireside Inn, Wednesday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m. You have to register to attend and speak, so send letters to be received by Aug. 30 to: Commission Secretary Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for British Columbia 1095 West Pender Street, Suite 301 Vancouver, BC V6E 2M6 You can also access an online registration form on their website: www.redecoupage-federalredistribution.ca Please come out en-masse to the meetings. We need to voice our desire to remain one West Kootenay community. Jason Peil, Nelson

First female superstar of country music, Kitty Wells, dies in Nashville BY JOE EDWARDS THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NASHVILLE - Singer Kitty Wells, whose hits such as “Making Believe” and “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” made her the first female superstar of country music, died Monday. She was 92. The singer’s family said she died peacefully at home after complications from a stroke. Her solo recording career lasted from 1952 to the late 1970s and she made concert tours from the late 1930s until 2000. That year, she announced she was quitting the road, although she performed occasionally in Nashville and elsewhere afterward. Her “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” in 1952 was the first No. 1 hit by a woman soloist on the country music charts and dashed the notion that women couldn’t be headliners. Billboard magazine had been charting country singles for about eight years at that time. She recorded approximately 50 albums, had 25 Top 10 country hits and went around the world several times. From 1953 to 1968, various polls listed Wells as the No. 1 female country singer. Tammy Wynette finally dethroned her. In 1976, she was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame and 10 years later received the Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music. In 1991 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences - the group that presents the Grammy Awards. Her 1955 hit “Making Believe” was on the movie soundtrack of “Mississippi Burning” that was released 33 years later. Among her other hits were “The Things I Might Have Been,” ”Release Me,“ ”Amigo’s Guitar,“ ”Heartbreak USA,“ ”Left to Right“ and a version of ”I Can’t Stop Loving You.“ In 1989, Wells collaborated with Brenda Lee, Loretta Lynn and k.d. lang on the record “The Honky Tonk Angels Medley.” “I never really thought about being a pioneer,” she said in an Associated Press interview in 2008. “I loved doing what I was doing.” Her songs tended to treasure devotion and home life, with titles like “Searching (For Someone Like You)” and “Three Ways (To Love You).” But her “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels” gave the woman’s point of view about the wild side of life. The song was written by J.D. Miller as a retort to Hank

Wells, the first female superstar of country music, has died at the age of 92. Thompson’s 1952 hit, “The Wild Side of Life.” The chorus to Thompson’s record was: “I didn’t know God made honkytonk angels “I might have known you’d never make a wife “But you gave up the only one that ever loved you “And went back to the wild side of life.” In his response, Miller wrote: “It wasn’t God who made honkytonk angels, “As you said in the words of your song, “Too many times married men think they’re still single, “That has caused many a good girl to go wrong. “It’s a shame that all blame is on us women ....” The song opened the way for women to present their view of life and love in country music. It also encouraged Nashville songwriters to begin writing from a woman’s perspective. The song was controversial enough that the Grand Ole Opry asked Wells not to perform it, and some radio stations were reluctant to play it. “They get away with a lot more today,” Wells told the AP in 1986. “They’re more (sexually) suggestive today.” In 2008, the Library of Congress announced that Wells’ record had been added to its National Recording Registry of works of unusual historic merit. Also that year, the Country
Music Hall of Fame and Museum honoured her with an exhibit about her career. Her second hit, “Paying for That Back Street Affair,” in 1953, was also written as an answer to a previous hit, Webb Pierce’s “Back Street Affair.” She was known as a gracious, elegant and family-oriented person. “What I’ve done has been satisfying,” she said in the 1986 AP interview. “I wouldn’t change a thing.” About her many years of touring, she said, “I like going to different places and seeing the scenery and meeting the people. I’ve always enjoyed travelling. It’s as good a way as any to spend your time.” She was born Ellen Muriel Deason in Nashville, the daughter of a railroad brakeman. She began playing the guitar at age 14 and soon was performing at dances in the Nashville area. Wells married Johnny Wright, half of a duo called Johnny and Jack, in 1938 when she was not yet 20, and soon began touring with the duo. She took her stage name from an old folk song, “Sweet Kitty Wells.” Johnny Wright died Sept. 27, 2011. By the late ‘40s, they were appearing on the Grand Ole Opry. He performed with her throughout her career and their long marriage. Son Bobby Wright, one of her three children, played a countrified sailor on the TV show “McHale’s Navy” from 1962 to 1966.

Trail’s Dallas Calvin excels at both hockey and baseball and after spending a week playing for the Langley Blaze in southern California, the dual-sport athlete is torn between the Kamloops hockey Blazers and the baseball Blaze.
Tough decision for Trail blazer Langley Blaze eye local talent BY JIM BAILEY Times Sports Editor
Trail AAA Jays pitcher and leading slugger Dallas Calvin got a good long look from the Langley Blaze last week as he joined the elite baseball team on a 10-game swing through southern California. The 17-year-old pitcher/first baseman saw lots of action, appearing in seven games for the Blaze, going 7-for-14 at the plate and picking up a win in his only start on the mound. “I pitched good, didn’t give up any runs, and my hitting was pretty good too,” said Calvin. Going .500 at the plate against elite U.S. teams and potential Major League pitchers is ‘pretty good’ indeed, as the Langley squad played in the Wally Kincaid Memorial tournament before winning six straight exhibition games.
“There were lots of good pitchers. Most guys were up throwing in the high 80s. But it’s not that hard to get use to once you see them a couple times,” said Calvin. The Blaze organization would love to have a player of Calvin’s caliber join its program, which emphasizes the development of young players. Many end up being drafted into the professional ranks or recruited into U.S. college programs where new educational and athletic opportunities await. Blaze manager Doug Mathieson said they had a chance to see Calvin play when the Jays participated in the Bellingham, Wash. tournament in June, and while they were impressed with his bat, they were equally wowed by the southpaw on the mound. “It’s a bit early to tell, but he’s got a good bat, though he probably has a better chance as a pitcher to go pro,” said Mathieson. “Left-hand pitchers who are
six-foot-four tend to draw some attention.” The Blaze organization provides a yearround regimen with a 14,000-square-foot indoor facility for players to train and develop their skills and play a 48-game schedule in the B.C. Premier Baseball League including numerous tournaments and championships, which can only help players like Calvin develop. “He needs to get stronger and work on his mechanics not just once in a while but on a daily basis, he needs to be in a consistent program,” said Mathieson. “You know our guys go six days a week all year, basically simulate a college or pro program.” Calvin, a standout with the Beaver Valley Nitehawks last season, is also headed back to the Western Hockey Leagues’ Kamloops Blazers camp in August - yet another option for the talented J. L. Crowe grad.

The Jays sweep Bandits in final homestand Trail takes show on road as it prepares for Districts BY TIMES STAFF The Trail AAA Jays played their final home games at Butler Park on the weekend, sweeping the Cranbrook Bandits in North Idaho American Legion action. The Jays won back-to-back games Saturday by scores of 10-0 and 16-1, before a 7-2 win Sunday. A more confident Jays squad has taken the field of late. After winning three of
five in the Spokane wood bat tournament last week, the Jays sweep of the Bandits makes it six victories in their last eight, and bodes well for the upcoming District tournament in Coeur d’Alene in which all teams from the NIAL vie for a trip to the State championship. Jarret Conway led the way in the first match, picking up the win in a one hit, four strike out performance over five innings and helped his cause by going 3-for-3 at the plate and knocking in a run. Josh Blank cracked a two-run homer and Tanner
Johnson went 1-for-2 with a home run, while Tyrus Jocko was 1-for-2 with a double as the Jays scored six runs in the second inning and never looked back. In the second game, Sean Barta went four innings for the victory giving up two hits and one run while sitting down four. Dallas Calvin went 3-for4 on the night, stroking two doubles and a home run, on his way to plating six Jay runners. In the final matchup on Sunday, the Bandits took a 1-0 lead before the Jays scored
seven unanswered runs in the next three at bats on just five hits. However, speed on the base paths got runners into position to score. The Jays stole seven bases in the game with Ryan Giesler and Tanner Johnson each swiping two. Crucial errors plagued the Cranbrook team all weekend and the Jays made them pay, as the Bandits made 13 errors in three games to only two for the Jays. It was the last homestand for Trail this year as they travel to play against the Prairie Cardinals in Post Falls for a double header today.
The Trail Major Little League All-Star team is finishing off an impressive string of victories with a pair of exhibition games today at Andy Bilesky Park, as it prepares to host the B.C. Little League provincial championship. The All Stars are coming off back-toback tournament wins in Pullman on the weekend and Kalispell the week before, and have won 14 games in a row and are 16-2 since forming in mid-June. The All Stars won the title by going 4-0 in the round robin and beating a strong Pasco squad 9-2 in the final. Trail plays Bonners
Ferry today at Andy Bilesky Park at noon and 2 p.m. for a final tune up before the provincial tournament. The team is peaking at the right time as Trail hosts the provincial championship with teams arriving on Friday for the opening banquet and games starting on Saturday. The All Stars first match goes at 1:30 p.m. following the opening ceremonies at 12:30 p.m. Minor League notes: At the Minor Little League provincials, after opening with a 11-7 win against Mt. Seymour Saturday, the Trail All Star minors lost 15-5 to West Van.
CALGARY STAMPEDE
Besplug bests them all THE CANADIAN PRESS CALGARY – Former four-time Trail Bulla-Rama champion Chad Besplug did what no other Canadian could muster at the 100th Calgary Stampede, he won the top prize in a signature event. Besplug pocketed a cool $100,000 after winning the final ride of Sunday’s bull-riding competition. The Claresholm, Alta. native scored 87 points atop Kish This in front of an appreciative crowd that braved rainy conditions to watch the final round of the 10-day event. “They were unbelievable,” said Besplug, who edged out fellow Canadian cowboy Aaron Roy of Yellow Grass, Sask., by just one point. “This being the 100th year, I remember thinking driving in (that) this is pretty special. “All the cowboys that have been here before ... I got goosebumps driving in here thinking about that.” Besplug said becoming the bull-riding champion during the Stampede’s centennial year is “worth more than the $100,000.” Besplug’s sister Jill is a two-time champion of the ladies’ barrel-racing event, winning at the Stampede in 2001 and ‘02. Besplug, Roy and defending champion Shane Proctor of Mooresville, N.C., were the only three to qualify for the championship round. On their first rides, all three were bucked off, so they had to do it all over again to decide the 2012 winner. After Proctor barely held on for eight seconds and a score of 66.5, Roy posted an 86-point ride atop Riskey Remedy to guarantee a Canadian winner. “I’m always rooting for Canadians,” said Besplug, who went on to edge out Roy for the title. “Everybody knows that.”

Green makes Capital gains THE CANADIAN PRESS WASHINGTON - The Washington Capitals didn’t wait long to make Mike Green a better offer. The Capitals signed the defenceman to a US$18.25-million, threeyear contract on Monday. The move comes a day after Green rejected a $5-million, one-year qualifying offer from Washington and became a restricted free agent. Green will earn $6 million in 2012-13 and 2013-14 and $6.25 million in 2014-15 after playing just 81 games over the last two injuryplagued seasons. “It’s been a long process, Green said in a conference call. “Negotiations started early in the year then obviously with the setback of the injury we were going to wait. And then wait after the playoffs, then after the draft, then after free agency so it’s been pushed back. The 26-year-old Calgary native has seen his production drop over the last two limited seasons. He played just 32 games in 2011-12 due to a groin injury and had three goals and four assists. The Capitals are gambling Green can get healthy and return to his pre-
vious form, which saw him break the 70-point plateau in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons. He has reached double digits in goals three times, including a 31-goal season in 200809. “They know what I’m capable of, Green said. “It was unfortunate the last couple of years that I’ve suffered through some injuries, but I believe that I’m over them. I think I’ve got them all out of my system. “I think that as happy as I am that they’re happy and they know I’m committed to the hockey team and doing the right things to be the best that I can. It’s a win-win for everybody. Green has collected 251 points (82 goals, 169 assists) and a plus-62 rating in 398 career NHL games, all with Washington. He said that he looks forward to rediscovering his offensive game under new head coach Adam Oates. “What (former coach Dale Hunter) expected was a kind of grinder, chipin chip-out kind of game, he said. “And I respect him as a coach and played that way and played hard for him. But I also at the same time am really excited that Adam is here.

FROM PAGE 11 And while he hasn’t made up his mind on hockey or baseball, the baseball Blaze provide a provocative carrot for Calvin. “He has the tools, he’s very athletic, and I know he’s a good hockey player, but six-four, six-five lefties don’t grow on trees, he’s dedicated and I mean most of it is just hard work, added Mathieson. The Blaze regularly head to tournaments in the U.S. to showcase its players and attract college scouts from across the country. “We put these kids in front of 500-600 scouts and colleges, it’s key for them to see us, and often they’ll make a point of seeing the Blaze just because of our track record. The 2011 Langley Blaze program had 17 players receive college commitments from U.S. schools which, again, is a testament to the caliber of the program and the respect that the organization garners from U.S. colleges and universities and their baseball programs, added Mathieson. The Blaze has 36 former players currently playing pro ball including Toronto Blue Jays infielder Brett Lawrie. Whether it’s the Blaze or the Blazers, the talented athlete has a tough decision ahead of him, one that could be a game breaker.
Federer passes Sampras THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LONDON - Roger Federer surpassed Pete Sampras on Monday to set the record for the most weeks at No. 1 in the ATP rankings. After winning Wimbledon a week ago, Federer returned to the top for the first time since June 2010. Monday marked his 287th week at No. 1, one more than Sampras. The 17-time Grand Slam champion also tied Sampras’ record of seven Wimbledon titles. Federer first becameNo. 1 in 2004 and said it was an “amazing feeling to be back at the top. “I had set a goal with my team to try and get back to the top of the rankings, but I never thought with the depth in the game this year that I would have been able to get it back so quickly, Federer said. “I am extremely proud and honoured to have beaten Pete’s record as he was my childhood hero and I have always looked up to him. The Swiss star will enter the Olympics next week as the world’s top-ranked player following his four-set win over Briton Andy Murray in the final at Wimbledon, which also will host the Olympic tennis competition. Federer spent 237 consecutive weeks at No. 1 between February 2004 and August 2008 and overtook Novak Djokovic atop the rankings with his win at Wimbledon - his 75th career ATP title. “Great effort, said Sampras. “The hardest thing to do in sports is the ability to stay on top.

Be non-committal when asked questions about sister Dear Annie: My sister, “Lena,” has been a problem for decades. She abused her children physically and continues to abuse the rest of the family emotionally. She is haughty and manipulative and lies to everyone. Her own kids want nothing to do with her. I am the last person left in the family who talks to Lena. She constantly expects me to run errands for her, loan her money and take care of her when she is sick, which is always. She never reciprocates. This is now affecting my blood pressure, and my children want me to cut her off. I’m ready. But if I do this, it will make certain social situations awkward. We move in the same circles. It would make it easier to walk away if I had some tools to use. What do I say when people ask about Lena? -- Need the Break Dear Need: It depends on what they are asking. If they want
ANNIE’S
MAILBOX
Marcy Sugar & Kathy Mitchell
to know how she’s doing, any variation on “fine” or “same as always” is sufficient. If they want to know more, you can simply say, “You should ask Lena.” You don’t want to create a scene or invite a flurry of follow-up questions, so be vague and noncommittal. You don’t owe people an explanation of your relationship or the details of an estrangement. Dear Annie: My husband, “Mark,” and I have been together for 12 years. It’s a second marriage for both of us. His ex embezzled $30,000 and forged Mark’s name on her credit cards, which she maxed out and he paid
for. Their daughter, now 35, calls her father only when she wants money. Last year, after a health scare, we made our funeral arrangements. Mark’s son died 20 years ago, and at that time, he bought three adjoining cemetery plots. When his ex divorced him, she got the house, car and everything else, but Mark got the burial plots. When his ex and his daughter saw our prepared headstone next to his son’s grave, they became hysterical. Annie, I am being cremated, and my ashes are being put in Mark’s headstone. The third cemetery plot is for any family member who might want it. They are solely in Mark’s name. Apparently, the ex wanted to be buried next to their son and doesn’t want me in the picture at all. Now Mark’s daughter barely has anything to do with her father. We feel bad about this,
but don’t believe we did anything wrong. Any suggestions, or do we just ignore all the drama? -- A Grave Situation Dear Grave Situation: Ignore it. Unless Mark is willing to sell the adjacent plot to his ex-wife, she has no claim on it. If she wants to be buried near her son, she should look at nearby plots and see what she can arrange. Dear Annie: I think your answer to “Hurting Mother” was way off base. She definitely stated that her granddaughter had unlocked the door, which means she must have locked access to the dog. What more could she have done? It was up to the parents to watch their child. It appears to me that “Susan” is looking for a way to make an easy buck off the mother she hates so much. I, too, am glad the little girl will be all right, but it’s her parents who have the problem, not her grand-
mother. -- Huachuca City, Ariz. Dear Arizona: We must have been sleeping when we read that letter. We agree that Susan sounds like a royal pain and should have kept a closer eye on her child. But it’s the
grandmother who has the problem. She wants to see her grandchild again, and an apology may be the only way to do it. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors
of the Ann Landers column. Please email your questions to anniesmailbox@comcast. net, or write to: Annie’s Mailbox, c/o Creators Syndicate, 737 3rd Street, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.

LEISURE
YOUR HOROSCOPE By Francis Drake For Wednesday, July 18, 2012 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You will do everything you can today to liberate yourself from an oppressive situation with someone. You will demand your freedom. (Be very careful.) TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your work routine likely will be interrupted by computer crashes, canceled meetings and equipment breakdowns. In addition, you want credit for what you do, and others might disagree. (Yikes.) GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Parents need to be extra vigilant today because this is an accident-prone day for your children. It’s also an accidentprone day if you work with children. Be careful! CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Guard against household accidents today. Small appliances might break down.
Technology and computers will be unreliable. Something definitely will interrupt your home routine. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) This is an accident-prone day for your sign, so slow down and take it easy. Don’t shoot from the hip. Think before you act or say anything. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Keep an eye on your money and your possessions today. You might find money; you might lose money. You might break something or do something that jeopardizes your job. (Oops.) LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) Hold your temper and do not strike out rashly against others. People are explosive, and there’s lots of tension today. You’re not the only one who feels impatient. (Easy does it.) SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) If you are doing something secretive or behind the scenes,
it could backfire or explode in your face, so be careful. A very strong unpredictable element is present today. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) A friend will surprise you today or alternatively, you could meet a real character. Most likely, you will butt heads with someone in a group over a sudden disagreement. Go carefully. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)
Don’t get into disagreements with bosses, parents and authority figures today. People are impatient and the situation is explosive. Don’t quit your day job (not today). AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Travel plans will be canceled or changed today. Ditto for meetings and classes in higher education. Expect the unexpected with publishing, the media, medicine and the law.
PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Conflicts about shared property, inheritances, debt and taxes are likely today. This is a poor day for these kinds of discussion. You won’t resolve anything. YOU BORN TODAY You are courageous, committed, persevering, confident and not afraid to strive for the impossible. Although you are an independent leader, you can work well with others. You are

REGIONAL Swimmers told to avoid one of region’s finest beaches at Taghum NELSON STAR The Regional District of Central Kootenay has issued a swim advisory to users of Taghum Beach due to poor water quality. The regional district said today swimming is not recommended at the beach— located 45 kilometres north of Trail—due to bacterial counts that exceed Health Canada guidelines. The regional district collects water samples weekly at the beach and analyzes it for fecal coliform bacteria, the notice said. Swimming in water with unacceptable bacteria levels can increase the risk of ear, nose, and throat infection or stomach illness. Signs have been posted at the beach to warn the public of the poor water quality
and will remain until sample results are again within acceptable limits. A similar notice was posted two years ago and lasted about a week. “We usually have a point every summer where the coliform levels are up, said Joe Chirico, general manager of community services for the RDCK. However, he said they aren’t able to tie it to any single reason or event. “It hasn’t been that consistent. That bay seems to be a collection point. Water seems to swirl and sit there, but it hasn’t been correlated with anything. The beach is downstream of the City of Nelson’s sewage treatment plant, but Chirico said there is nothing to suggest a link.
