The city’s new hospital will open with its full complement of beds, according to the Vancouver

Island Health Authority (VIHA). “I absolutely stake my reputation…that we’re going to open all 95 beds on day one,” said Heather Gibson, a VIHA director who also serves on the North Island hospi-

tals’ project team. Confusion about the number of beds began last week following a presentation by VIHA’s interim project director, Grant Hollett, to city council.

In the project description, Hollett stated the 95 beds were on target for 2025-’26. That was news to North Island MLA Claire Trevena who expects all beds to be available when the $266-million hospi-

Campbell River – Salmon capital of the world. How very fortunate we are to have access to an almost endless supply! But how do we prepare the salmon to capture its full potential of flavour and succulent qualities? Fresh or store-bought?

Having decided which type of salmon to purchase, remember to regard it’s quality and freshness. Fish fillets should have a moist and lustrous appearance with no discolouration or dried edges. It should not be sitting in a pool of its juices.

In the coming weeks, the Campbell River Mirror will be featuring some of Campbell River’s finest chefs as they describe their preparations of one of our city’s finest heritage food.

When purchasing whole salmon, look for clear bright eyes as well as a firm and moist skin with a ‘shine appeal’. The tail should be pliable and the gills a bright to dark red colour. The scales should be tight.

Which type of salmon would you choose and what type of cooking method would best suit that choice may seem like a difficult question yet the answer is quite simple. Always choose your cooking technique based on the salmon’s fat and oil content. From the Pacific Ocean we have access to Sockeye, Chinook (also known as King Salmon), Chum, Coho, Pink, and farmed Atlantic Salmon that lend themselves to a variety of cooking methods from smoking, pan frying, deep frying, soups, stews, casseroles, baking, steaming, broiling, traditional poaching, low heat oil poaching, and of course sushi and gravlax curing. It is easy to see how Salmon is one of the world’s most versatile food items. Recipes are only limited to your imagination. Experiment and play with your ideas. Worst case scenario – you will have a great salmon salad to enjoy!

As you prepare the filet remember to remove the pin bones. These can be removed quite easily with tweezers or needle-nose pliers and will increase your dining experience a 100%! Be careful not to overcook the salmon, however atlantic salmon will hold its juices quite well if overcooked. I myself prefer my salmon prepared slightly over medium, just enough to turn the flesh opaque. Season the salmon to bring out its full potential remembering that marinades are a great way to increase the flavours as well as using fresh herbs. At the Royal Coachman, I will be preparing lunch and dinner salmon features through July and into August. Come try one of my favourites, Spicy Szechuan Glazed Salmon fillet, prepared using both grilling and steaming methods.

Spicy Szechuan Glazed Salmon With the pin bones removed it is marinated with a Szechuan glaze for 2 hours, then patted dry. After oiling the flesh side, it is placed directly on the grill (this could be seared in a pan if you are doing it at home). It is removed after one minute, brushed with more Szechuan glaze and placed in a bamboo steamer basket which has been lined with kale and topped with rice & vegetables including baby bok choy. With the basket lid on the fish is placed over a simmering pot of water to cook for 7 minutes. According to Gibson, a percentage of those 95 beds will be occupied by patients requiring an alternative level of care. They could be people waiting to get into a residential care facility or who require home care in place before the return to their residences. Gibson said the plan is to reduce the number of alternative care beds by 75 per cent and this will be done over a 10-year period once the hospital opens. Poisoned trees Campbell River RCMP believe someone may have poisoned a neighbour’s trees to improve their ocean view. Police received a report Monday of three large plum trees in the Larwood Road area that had apparently been poisoned. An arborist suggested the trees were intentionally killed. Holes were found at the base of the trees which are most likely where the poison was administered. The RCMP is looking for assistance with this investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact CrimeStoppers or the local RCMP detachment.

Car thefts thwarted

Police responded to a report of a male and a female youth walking down South Alder Street attempting to break into vehicles around midnight last Friday. Upon arrival, RCMP located the two suspects including two other accomplices. During the investigation, stolen property was located in the backpack of a male youth. He is facing charges of theft under $5,000 as well as possession of stolen property. Police are hoping to return the possessions seized to their rightful owners. Driver runs stop sign Two vehicles were severely damaged in an accident at Simms and Galerno roads on July 10, around 1 p.m. Mounties attended the accident and were advised by one driver that they did not see the stop sign and continued through the intersection. Their vehicle was then struck by another vehicle legally going through the intersection. The second driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The investigation is continuing and charges are pending against the driver who was not paying attention to the road.

Ditch work finally starts, but resident still unhappy Spring Road man finally sees work crew, but sounds off on taxation KRISTEN DOUGLAS

After a Spring Road resident said he was “lied to” by the city about ditching work on his street, the city sprung into action. Crews arrived to do ditching along Spring Road the day after residents complained to council about neglected roads and ditches; the city manager said the work had been scheduled for that date before the neighbours complained. Richard Paquette and Russell Herding both spoke at a council meeting July 10 to express their displeasure with the condition of their neighbourhood roads. Herding said he has to deal with a flooded crawl space on an ongoing basis because the city will not dig out sedimentfilled drainage ditches along Spring Road, which cause his perimeter drain to back up. “I’m a steel-trades construction worker who spends up to seven months a year away from home,” Herding said. “Let’s be honest, the last thing I want to do when I’m home is to hear my little gaffers running around upstairs having a heyday and I’m down shop-vaccing the flipping crawl space. It’s disheartening.” Herding said he’s called the

city numerous times to ask about the ditching, with no results. “A year went past. I waited. I phoned the city again and said ‘what’s with the ditching?’ They said June 15. That week went by. We were just blatantly lied to,” he said. But last Wednesday, the day after Herding’s delegation to council, the city sent a crew to do the ditching work, which city manager Andy Laidlaw said was scheduled for a number of weeks. “As scheduled, work started on July 11,” Laidlaw said in a news release. “Ditching work must occur during summer months when the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans authorizes work in streams or riparian areas and when weather is suitable. “When (city) staff spoke with Mr. Herding Wednesday, he indicated that he was happy to see the crew out and understood and appreciated the scheduling issue.” But last week Herding was also unimpressed with his high tax bill and what he sees as his money going to waste. “My family and I have lived there six years,” he said. “In the span of the six years, my property taxes have gone up to $1,600. Where’s that money going? I don’t understand.” Herding noted he watched a city tractor take 27 minutes to cut a patch of grass, which he takes his own lawn mower over. “What’s going on?” Herding asked council. “It comes back to the tax thing. Please

deal with the issues...we have a depressed community, the taxes went up and I can’t sell my house. I cannot even sell my house because I have flooding conditions. The taxes are so high who wants to move here?” Taxes went up 13.6 per cent this year and Laidlaw said homes in the Spring Road area have seen a significant increase in property value assessment. “Mr. Herding’s property tax bill has increased by about $1,500 since 2007,” Laidlaw said. “About half that pays for city services. The remaining 45 per cent funds other agencies (such as) the regional district, school district, hospital, library, etc.” As for the amount of time Herding said it took to mow the grass along the roadway, Laidlaw said it was done by a contractor and “the speed of work is proportionate to the density and moisture of material they’re mowing and the terrain travelled” and that “this year’s rainfall has made for exceptionally thick-growing grass.” Paquette, the other Spring Road resident to take his case up to council last week, was still waiting for answers. Laidlaw said city staff could not reach Paquette last week and that staff will discuss scheduling for road repairs with Paquette when he’s available. Paquette has been before council at least three times in the last two years to complain about the potholes and broken asphalt on Spring Road.

A new Merecroftarea apartment complex received council approval last week, but not all councillors were on board. The proposal, submitted by Joe Myers Investment Ltd., calls for a four-storey, 47-unit rental facility on the corner of Merecroft Road and Dogwood Street.

City staff recommended council approve the project as it meets all zoning requirements and, with the building located across the street from Merecroft Village, it promotes the city’s goal of walkable areas. Coun. Ron Ker r, while acknowledging it’s a “great building,” said he couldn’t support the project. “I’m generally pro-

development and it’s good to see developers propose new projects in Campbell River (but) what you’re proposing here is a four-storey monolith,” Kerr said. “I want to talk about the visual impact. The mountain views from the top of Merecroft hill are incredible. What’s being proposed here...we’ll lose a large chunk of those views and we’ll lose it forever. Thousands of

drivers (on Dogwood) see those views. I don’t think this is the best development for this sight.” Coun. Larry Samson disagreed. “I think this is exactly what we’re looking for,” Samson said, adding the development won’t impact the mountain views of surrounding residents. The development is expected to have 71 parking stalls, includ-

ing an accessible parking spot. The primary access for the proposed development is off Merecroft Road however, pedestrian walkways are expected to be provided around the building and out onto the Dogwood sidewalk to promote better access. The site runs 20 metres along Merecroft and 77.9 metres along Dogwood. The cladding of the

building is proposed to be primarily HardiPlank, clapboard style siding. The building is expected to be a mix of medium brown, tan and teal colours. A key aspect of the development is the use of lighting to add security for residents. The front entrance, side entrance, pathways, and parking lot will all be lit and run on daylight sensors to reduce energy con-

sumption, according to the development permit application. Coun. Andy Adams commended the proponent for bringing the project forward to council and was pleased to approve the proposal. Father and son found by Search and Rescue Hydro re-opens access to river, C a m p b e l l R ive r Search and Rescue located two overdue canoeists safe and sound early Friday morning. At 1:40 a.m., Sayward RCMP contacted Search and Rescue to assist in locating two persons overdue from a fishing trip on Pye Lake north of Camp-

bell River. The father and son had left their campsite on the west side of Pye Lake in a canoe. When they hadn’t returned by dark a family member drove south to cell coverage and reported them overdue. Search and Rescue launched two ridged hulled inflatable boats.

They proceeded to the east side of the lake where the couple were last seen at about 8 p.m. Thursday night. The unoccupied canoe was quickly located in lakeshore shallows but it had been swamped. A quick search of the adjacent shoreline located the two fishermen. They

were chilled and wet but otherwise uninjured. “The outcome was one of a little inconvenience for some and an adventure story to tell for others,” said Glen Quarmby, search manager for Campbell River Search and Rescue. “If the couple had not been wearing their personal floatation devices the outcome would likely be much worse. Please wear a personal floatation device at all times.”

ing public access. The primary one is the large spruce tree that spanned the course of the river significantly shifted its position because of the high river flows that were up to 160 m3/s. It had fallen directly across the river in March, but the tree has shifted out of the main river flow and now runs parallel to the river bank. The secondary issue is BC Hydro has come down from those high flows and is currently releasing 120 m3/s from John Hart facilities. There is a water discharge of about 80 m3/s from the generating station and about 40 m3/s from the dam down Elk Falls Canyon. The drier weather is helping the reservoir level situation but there is still a signifi-

Water inflows into the system are slightly higher but close to matching the downstream releases. The inflows are declining as the snowpack depletes. BC Hydro advises the public that enters the river with water craft/ floatation devices to have navigational control. River flows are higher than normal for this time of year and that will continue until early August. There is tree debris and hazards along the edges of the river, including the spruce tree, that can change on a daily basis. If you decide to enter the river please use caution.

City council unanimously voted down a pesticide control bylaw that Mayor Walter Jakeway warned the city wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be able to enforce. City staff recommended council pass a bylaw that would regulate the use of pesticides on outdoor trees, shrubs, flowers, ornamental plants and turf. Staff were eyeing an implementation date of January 1, 2013 to allow time to notify the public and local businesses. H o w e v e r, s t a f f

acknowledged in a report to council that the city already has an Integrated Pest Management Plan â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which encourages top dressing, over seeding, and fertilizing as alternatives to pesticides â&#x20AC;&#x201C; that it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the resources to follow. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Budget reductions to the parks department in the last few years have severely reduced the capacity for a proactive IPM (Integrated Pest Management Plan) approach to maintenance of our sport fields and green spaces,â&#x20AC;? said Amber Zirnhelt, city sustainability manager. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The budget reductions have

increased the need for pesticide applications to control weed infestations.â&#x20AC;? That was a red flag for Jakeway. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe in trying to enforce a bylaw that we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enforce,â&#x20AC;? he said at last weekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council meeting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think we have the capacity. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe in bringing in bylaws that we just donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a chance of enforcing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Why would we try? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a provincial thing in my view. I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know why we would do this.â&#x20AC;? Coun. Claire Moglove agreed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Right now the city

already has a policy which we canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t implement because we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the resources. To put it into a bylaw almost gives it more teeth, but we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the funding to implement it and we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the resources to enforce the bylaw,â&#x20AC;? she said. Zir nhelt said the pest management plan needs a budget of $107,000 in order to reestablish proper sports field maintenance. Zirnhelt said by adopting a pesticide bylaw, the city could have the option of abandoning the more expensive, less lenient pest management plan.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The proposed pesticide bylaw is flexible enough to allow the city to apply pesticides as necessary to control serious turf pest outbreaks and to reduce maintenance costs,â&#x20AC;? she said. Moglove said that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t seem fair and she couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t support the bylaw. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If I read the proposed bylaw correctly, it basically gives the city an out,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It gives a fair bit of latitude to the city to use pesticides, but it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give the same latitude to the public.â&#x20AC;? Coun. Mary Storry said she felt â&#x20AC;&#x153;uncomfortable insisting on

compliance from the community when we may not be able to have the full compliance ourselves.â&#x20AC;? Coun. Ron Kerr, who worked in the lawn and garden industry for 30 years, said the city does not need a pesticide bylaw. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe that pesticides have an important role and when applied properly and ef fectively, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; re safe,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think an outright ban is not the answer.â&#x20AC;? Storry said she would be open to having the bylaw come back before council once budget issues have been settled.

Tubers cautioned about the Oyster River Tubers who plan to cruise down the Oyster River should take warning. Area resident Randy Calvert contacted the Mirror on Monday to warn swimmers and tubers about the current dangers. He said water levels are up and a group of men in their mid-20s got caught under trees in the river on the weekend and barely made it out. They had entered the river off of James Cres.

Finning wins the sink The Campbell River Hospital Foundation’s first annual Scrap Metal Challenge was a junk yard triumph. Local businesses and the City of Campbell River went headto-head in a race to donate the most scrap metal through the

month of June. Participant ABC Recycling, which supplied bins, went above and beyond to make sure the contest was a success, said Alana Caldwell of the Hospital Foundation. “ABC Recycling was there for the Hospital

Foundation throughout this whole challenge and in addition to all of their support, they surprised the foundation with a donation of $5,000,” Caldwell said on behalf of the foundation. “A special thankyou to Rick Coombs

and Katie Barton for your contribution to community health care.” Finning Canada was the winner of the contest. The company will get to keep the trophy, made from a kitchen sink, for one year.

For the 4th year in a row, Variety – The Children’s Charity and 97.3 The Eagle reached out to the people of the Comox Valley and Campbell River, requesting support for the charity. The results serve to prove the size of the hearts of the communities, who contributed $28,474 to help children with special needs and their families. “It has been a privilege to work with Variety again on our fourt annual Radiothon,” says Richard Skinner, operations manager at The Eagle. “It’s always so heartwarm-

ing to see our listeners come through in such a generous way. The people of Vancouver Island are known for their generosity, but the folks in Campbell River and the Comox Valley region really outdid themselves. We hit $8,000 on the first day, and flew past that mark with the extra $20,000-plus on the second day.” Vo l u n t e e r s c a m e

from all over the region to “man” the phones during the two-day, 12 hour radiothon. “It’s extremely important to note that all of the money we raise stays in the community. Every dollar donated goes to help your neighbours,” says event co-ordinator Lexa Betson. “We had a lot of fun with groups ch a l l e n g i n g o t h e r groups to meet or beat

donations.” 138 Buddy Bears, adorable stuffed teddies that each represents a collective donation of $200, will be distributed to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox, Campbell River Hospital and Powell River Hospital to comfort children in need. Using the latest technology, the mapping will concentrate on areas which show some potential for mineral and metal mining. At the very least, said Pat Bell, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation, the mapping data should lead to new prospecting and staking claims. That, in itself, could result in tens of millions being spent in this region with Campbell River wellsuited to be the base for operations; prospectors need places to stay, to eat and to buy supplies. Providing this data is not only good for prospectors and mining firms, but it also shows good faith from

the province that B.C. is receptive to new mines and investment. However, that said, it’s important to note that magnetic mapping is, and has been, taking place throughout vast swaths of Northern B.C. The challenge for Campbell River, once the data is released, is to provide some sort of incentive to encourage exploration in this region. Other communities throughout the province are surely doing the same thing. The new data is just one tool that can help “fix” the economy. It’s up to us now to properly use those tools to create viable and long-lasting opportunities.

Cancer Society wants ban Re: Council hesitant to enact pesticide ban (Mirror, July 5). The Canadian Cancer Society would like to thank the City of Campbell River for considering a bylaw that would prohibit the use of cosmetic or non-essential pesticides on public and private land. These pesticides are used to improve the appearance of various landscapes such as lawns, gardens, parks, and sports fields. The Canadian Cancer Society maintains that health should take precedence over the beautification of our lawns and gardens, especially since viable alternatives exist to chemical pesticides. Three weeks ago, the Ontario College of Family Physicians issued a statement strongly recommending that the public reduce their exposure to pesticides, based on the findings of their second comprehensive review. Their review demonstrates that children are particularly vulnerable and shows associations between pesticides and various neurological and respiratory diseases, and reproductive problems. By the time you read this I should be in Vanderhoof, the geographical centre of B.C., to visit relatives. Born in the Okanagan, raised in the Peace country and working for 20 years in Metro Vancouver, I’ve driven from one end of the province to the other more times than I can count. A similar trip last year began just as a huge mudslide was cleared near Chilliwack. Other drives have featured mid-summer hail piled 10 centimetres deep on the Coquihalla, a near miss between two moose in the Pine Pass, plus the usual blizzards and hundreds of traffic jams for construction, accidents and growing urban volume delays. This time I’ve got a new tool on

board, the mobile version of DriveBC. ca on my BlackBerry. Launched two years, ago, the mobile site has taken off with the surging popularity of smartphones. In the past year, DriveBC’s online traffic averaged 1.2 million visits a month, about half to the five-yearold desktop site and half from mobile users. It’s by far the most popular B.C. government website. I asked DriveBC technical leader Nainesh Agarwal for these stats, and he said even he was surprised by the surge in mobile traffic in recent months. A recent addition is “replay the day,” which shows the last 24 hours of pictures in a few seconds. Another new feature is an e-mail alert that can be customized. You can

subscribe to a particular region or highway and receive notices as soon as they are posted to the DriveBC network. And of course there is an @ drivebc Twitter feed, where between 6:30 a.m. and midnight, staff update conditions and respond to inquiries. (Major events are automatically tweeted overnight.) Verified reports are fed from highways staff and contractors all over the province and co-ordinated through the provincial highways condition centre in the Lower Mainland. While a definitive cause and effect relationship between pesticides and cancer has not been established, the Canadian Cancer Society is very concerned about the growing body of evidence suggesting pesticides may increase the risk of several types of cancers, including nonHodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, prostate, kidney and

lung cancers. Studies on pesticides and childhood cancer also show a possible connection with leukemia, brain tumours and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Enough is known to be prudent and prevent exposure, especially when the use of these chemicals is unnecessary, exposure to them is irreversible and there are effective alternatives and practices.

There is strong public support for banning the cosmetic use of pesticides. Of the two public consultations that the BC Government conducted in 2010 and 2011, the vast majority of responses were in favour of prohibiting the use of pesticides used for cosmetic purposes. Furthermore, over 70 per cent of British Columbians support provincial le gislation to restrict pesti-

cide use, according to polling conducted on behalf of the Canadian Cancer Society in 2010; and we now have 40 communities in BC who have adopted local bylaws. We urge the City of Campbell River to move forward with a bylaw that would prohibit the use of cosmetic pesticides on public and private land as soon as possible. cies we can take steps to reduce the risk of cancer and promote health. local maintenance contractor who can take the report. For those who haven’t joined the smartphone era, there is an old-fashioned option. Dialing 5-1-1 anywhere in the province gives access to a toll-free line that connects to recorded

DriveBC messages. Agarwal said use of that service has been declining as phones with web access become more popular. The 5-1-1 service also requires you to use the keypad to select your route from a numerical list, so drivers would

have to pull over rather than breach the new restrictions on using handheld devices while driving. The 5-1-1 system still gets surges of heavy use during major events like the recent flooding. The plan is to upgrade the system

My small black chihuahua chased a deer across the highway, from the Vista Del Mar Motel, when we were coming off the beach. partner Wrangler (and English springer spaniel). The two took part in the annual Mission Training Camp, a three-day emergency earthquake simulation event which includes p a r t i c i p a n t s f ro m Courtenay, Victoria, Edmonton, Cochrane,

Fairview. As well, there was a handler and dog from FEMA in Seattle and also two members of the Slovenian Search team in Europe. Victoria USAR and the military were also involved in the event. The dogs and their partners worked long

days in various sites, including old warehouses, office spaces, a collapsed house and also large rock and rubble areas. Collaborating with other teams is very important in emergency work and is always a great learning experience.

Learn about Oyster River Ever wondered about the history of Oyster River and its many colourful characters of the past? The Museum at Campbell River is offering a chance to explore the region through a guided walk offered by the Museum’s summer students. Starting at Fisherman’s Lodge, participants will be entertained by stories of the past as they follow the forested trail along the riverbank, then proceed along the ocean shore towards Salmon Point Pub. Here, the group will stop to enjoy their picnic lunches on the beach. Hikers will then return to Fisherman’s. Don’t forget to bring a packed lunch and water, and it is advisable to be prepared for sunny weather with sun hats and/or sun screen. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes. The hike is easy to moderate-although four hours in length; there is no steep terrain. The interpretative walk will be offered twice, on Friday, July 20, and Friday, Aug. 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person. The Cortes Island Museum is sponsoring a trip aboard Misty Isles to Cassel Lake and waterfall in Teakerne Arm on Thursday, July 19. You will depart from Squirrel Cove at 10:30 a.m. and head north through Lewis Channel to Teakerne Arm. You will pass by the spot where Captain Georg e Vancouver

The waterfall was called Captain Vancouver’s “spa.” After viewing the waterfall, Misty Isles will cast anchor and participants will take a short hike to the lake. June passed away peacefully, in Campbell River Hospital with her loving partner Lew Taylor at her side. June is survived by 9 children (oldest to youngest) David Turcott, Ellen Matheson, Stanley Turcott, and Jay Turcott, Kelly Denhardt, Kathy, Billy, Jerry, and Chris Denhardt. June was born in the Thunder Bay area to parents Harry and Sarah McCluskey (deceased) and raised in Stanley Ont, along with her siblings Alex (deceased) Robert, Murray, and foster cousin/brother Lorne. Her ďŹ rst husband Turcott died a young man, tragically of a brain aneurism leaving four children. June married again, and her second husband Denhardt died in a car accident after ďŹ ve children. She separated from third husband Larsen. June came to BC in 1965 and raised her children here. The family is spread across Canada and June leaves many grandchildren, and many more great grandchildren.

In 1962 he took a job as the chief engineer for Island Airlines where he worked through the bustling times of the early 70s when the logging industry was booming and aviation soared to unbelievable heights. He enjoyed 14 years working with Island Airlines, but his passion for innovation was always there and so Dave went on to establish his own company, Nilson Aircraft, in 1976. He specialized in maintenance and modiďŹ cation. Over the years Dave developed and patented several of his inventions for use on Otters, Beavers, and other aircraft. cient, He will also be remembered for his work on the conversion of the Beech 18 into a more efďŹ cient, higher performance seaplane. As well, Nilson Aircraft manufactured Otter ďŹ&#x201A;oat legs for both amphibian and straight ďŹ&#x201A;oats. Daveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passion for aircraft and his technical expertise garnered him coverage over the years in newspaper and magazine articles, books, and on various websites. In 1990 Dave won the prestigious Robert Hope Pursuit of Excellence Award in recognition for outstanding contribution to the aviation industry in the ďŹ eld of aircraft maintenance. He loved to ďŹ&#x201A;y and his career took him to several remote parts of Canada, including the high arctic. He also wrote a tech Log Column for Aviator Magazine for several years. In 2003 Dave retired, closing down his company, and spent much of his creative passion working on his painting and singing. While he had no real ambition to exhibit his work, a number of his paintings were hung in galleries on Vancouver Island, and his beautiful depiction of the Stranraer is hanging in Vancouver International Airport, having been purchased by the BC Aviation Council as the ďŹ rst painting of a group to depict early aviation in BC. His love of singing led him to spend many years performing as a bass in Campbell River Singers and Quadra Singers. In the early years Dave was an active member and at one time president of The Gyro Club, a group dedicated to wholesome activities with a focus on families. Many lasting friendships were formed in these years. Dave was a friend to many, and a loving father and husband. He enjoyed a rich and full life and immersed himself in nature, stories, and creative thinking. Friends and family remember Dave as a very social, humble, good man, with a great sense of humor. Daveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s last wishes are for his friends and family to celebrate his life and remember him in memories of the times shared. There will be no formal service by request. A gathering of friends will be announced at a later date. In lieu of ďŹ&#x201A;owers please make a donation to The Altrusa Adult Care Society of Campbell River. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But try to remember that a good man can never die. You will see him in the streets and in all the places of the townâ&#x20AC;Śin all the things that make this a world for us to live in. After an separation of some 20 years, Lew came back into Juneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, and they spent the last 10 wonderful years together in Sayward. June loved the small community feel and the abundant beauty of Sayward. June was a wonderful friend and mentor to hundreds and her wisdom and support will be greatly missed. Composters dig challenge Compost Challenge competition mounts in reality-TV style contest Competition is heating up among Campbell River’s Compost Video Challenge participants. Competitors met face-to-face for the first time last week to learn who is who in the competition, gain tips on gathering video footage and learn the contest details. Six Campbell River families were selected to compete in a 30-day reality-TV style video competition to learn to compost, overcome composting challenges and produce entertaining video documentation of their experiences. The winning family will receive $500 in groceries at a store of their choice. The competition

Giving back Ocean Resort Owner Lucas Stiefvater presents $3,514 to Campbell River Beacon Club director Leah Lewis (standing) and club member Cecilia Tiedemann. Stiefvater held an open house at the resort in June to celebrate his 40 years in Canada. Hundreds of swimmers took part in the meet which attracted kids from Powell River, Sidney, Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley, Oak Bay, Salt Spring Island, Juan de Fuca, and Courtenay. The Salmon Kings are celebrating 50 years of swimming in 2012.

Overall, B.C. students earn a ‘C’ mark More than two-thirds of Grade 4 and Grade 7 students met or exceeded expectations in this year’s Foundational Skills Assessment (FSA). FSA is an annual assessment of student achievement in the foundation skills of reading, writing and numeracy.

The purpose of FSA is to help the Ministry of Education, school districts and parents evaluate student achievement in these core skills and to plan for improvement. FSA is one of many measures used to assess student achievement and supplements other information gathered

in classrooms during the year. With limited exceptions, all Grade 4 and Grade 7 students are expected to participate in FSA. Approximately 75,000, or 84 per cent of students, wrote the assessment in 2012. This overall participation rate has remained constant since 2009.
