The last days of transit in Golden Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net

CBT helps gymnasts go to new heights .............................18

After the difficult decision was made in early April, transit in Golden will officially come to an end on July 27. Kicking Horse Country Transit service was terminated due to a combination of limited ridership and municipal government financial constraints. “During our budget deliberations, we had fairly significant conversations about how to invest our tax dollars for our municipality. And the first item from the closed meeting was the termination notice of the Transit Service Agreement, said Mayor Christina Benty when the decision was first announced in April. “Unfortunately our transit system is one of the worst

performers in the province... and we would actually be forced to buy two more busses in the near future which would have a significant impact on our budget for next year. The decision has been met with some frustration from some regular transit users. But nevertheless, the last day of transit service will be July 27. “As a taxpayer I am angry and disappointed. I do believe there is a lot of misconception in the community, Sonya Smith, President of Olympus Stage Lines which was the company contracted to run the service in Golden, told the Golden Star a few weeks after the decision was announced. “I believe our community is losing a service which could have been very valuable. A 92-page report analyzing the Golden transit sys-

tem revealed that the town was at the bottom with a 3.4 per cent cost recovery, and it was second highest from the top for the cost to run the service, among similar sized communities. The Health Connections service between Golden and Cranbrook will continue. The bus leaves Golden at 8 a.m. with stops in Cranbrook at the Tamarack Mall, Cranbrook Hospital and other medical facilities at 11:15 a.m. The return trip leaves Cranbrook at 3:30 p.m. and arrives in Golden at 6:30 p.m. The Health Connections service gives priority to people with medical appointments but is open to all, if space is available. Mount 7 Taxi still offers 24-hour taxi and limousine service in Golden and surrounding areas, and can be contacted at 344-5237.

Nomination packs out for byelection Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net A byelection will be happening in Golden and the nomination packages will be available as of July 16 Manager of Corporate Administration for the Town of Golden Jon Wilsgard said packages will be accepted between July 26 and August 3. The byelection is being held to fill two vacancies caused when long time Coun. Mag Magnusson resigned due to health reasons and more recently Coun. John Jackson resigned due to new work commitments. Wilsgard said he will not be able to declare an election until he receives at least three nominations for the positions.

“What will happen will be on a Monday of the second week of August, I will either declare an election or an acclimation,” Wilsgard said. People can go to the town office and pick up a package if they are interested in running. “We are two councillors short. We need to have all of council there to make the good decisions which need to be made. Other than that it is a great opportunity to learn about local government,” Wilsgard said. “What I really like is how much councillors learn about local government.” Wilsgard also said his door is open to talk to anyone who is interested in learning more about the process and possibly running in the election.

the Wheel The good and bad side of grants Behind The Ubilt Utility Trailer Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net

In a recent special council meeting for the Town of Golden, a discussion over issues surround granting systems in Canada was raised. Multiple councillors questioned the way the system works, and many of the restrictions that come with grants from the provincial and federal governments. Manager of Corporate Administration for the Town of Golden, Jon Wilsgard, shared his views on the system. “Essentially it boils down to a couple of different factors. Municipalities have a few ways of raising revenues to operate. The first of course is property taxes,” Wilsgard said. He explained that property taxes are the main source of revenue for municipalities. “There are inherent inequities and unfairness in forcing a government body to base the majority of their operating cost and monies on taxing a very small local area. There is a massive financial disconnect, and that is the point we are reaching,” he said. “What it is coming down to is that municipalities are reaching a point where they can not tax enough for what needs to be done and the tax payers can not afford the taxation implications of what needs to be done.” The other big source of potential revenue for town’s like Golden are grants from the provincial and federal governments. Wilsgard said one of the main issues with the

granting system is that “they do not constitute a reliable and continuous stream flow of funds to municipalities.” Grants can be politically motivated and have mandates attached to them, which controls which area the funds will have to be spent, added Wilsgard. “As a result of this they are encumbering on what you are allowed to do with them and because of that they completely hijack the proper planning that a municipality has to do,” he said. Wilsgard used the example of the proposed Bridge to Bridge project where the funds granted to the Town can only be used on a diking project, and nothing else other than flood control measures on the Kicking Horse River. Town of Golden Mayor Christina Benty said there are both benefits and challenges to the current granting system. “Grants allow you to do community projects that you wouldn’t normally be able to do,” Benty said. Benty pointed to the work done on the Golden Civic Centre which only cost tax payers in Golden seven per cent, with the rest of the funding coming from grants. She went on to say grants are extremely beneficial to towns even though they do come with challenges. “There are specific timelines and guidelines. They are time consuming to apply for grants. You have to spend money ahead of time to put together an application form which will in a sense dazzle those people where you

are applying for a grant,” Benty said. In the case of the grant for the Bridge to Bridge project Benty explained that even though it is a large grant for such a small town they still have to figure out a way to come up with onethird of the finances required. “We had no idea we were going to get the grant. We thought a lot of the money was going to go to the lower mainland but felt it was important to us (to apply). We put together the granting proposal and lobbying the government. But we did not know what was going to happen,” she said. Wilsgard also pointed to the amount of staff hours that have to go into to a rather lengthy process to apply for grants. He said he understands that there has to be a process but the extreme “It is completely self defeating in terms of enabling proper planning for municipalities to be able to apply and obtain funds for certain things when they are required. When the timing is right. When the proper plans are finished instead of leaping because the grants are here right now otherwise the money will be gone,” Wilsgard said. Benty said the system does not allow for municipalities to use funds based off of priorities of the community. At times towns will apply for grants for many different projects and if you get money for something lower down on the priority list then the perception from the public could be the higher pro-

ject are being ignored. “I think having more flexibility would be beneficial,” Benty said. She went on to explain that if hte town had more flexibility they could identify all the priorities and meet them through a more liberal system. Even though the granting system has some issues Benty would not take the leap that it should be abandoned. “I think you can always explore options to improve the system. Throwing it out I do not think would be wise because we have benefited as a community from grants,” she said. “We as local government are trying to provide a broad range of services with limited financial resources.” In the end Wilsgard explained he sees, “The end game for municipalities would be a share of the consumptive tax and /or sustainable funding from higher levels of government where you know it is coming.”

The number of seats up for grabs in the upcoming byelection in Golden doubled with the announcement that Coun. John Jackson has made the decision to resign. Jackson, who was sitting in his first term in council, informed staff and Mayor Christina Benty of his decision so that the empty seat could be filled in the September byelection. “I got a job offer which

means I will be working back in the enviormental field which I am trained in,” Jackson said. “It is going to require a lot of travel and I could not in good conquence try and hold down a councillors position knowing full well I might on make one meeting per month if I was lucky.” Although Jackson did not want to give up the position, the surprise job offer was something he felt he could not say no to at this point in his life.

“This is a once in a lifetime kind of deal that I have to take,” he said. Even though it has been less than a year since Jackson was elected to council he explained he was glad to have had the chance to serve. “I really enjoyed my time in council. I absoluteley hate having to make this decision because I was having a lot of fun and it was challenging. I appreciate the fact those people voted for me,” Jackson said.

The quality of a home made utility trailer can range from factory perfect to I’m amazed that it is still following you. Licencing, lights and weight are the most common problems encountered by enforcement personnel at the roadside. With a little thought and knowledge you can pull that extra load around safely. All trailers, at minimum, need two yellow front side marker lights and reflectors, two red rear side marker lights and reflectors, tail lights, brake lights, rear reflectors and a licence plate light. They must all be functional, even in full daylight. Depending on the dimensions of the trailer additional clearance lights may be required. “Borrowing” a licence plate from another trailer instead of properly licencing each trailer owned is surprisingly common. You cannot temporarily transfer utility licence plates among vehicles you already own. This is misuse of licence plates and is an offence that will result in a fine and possibly a tow truck. Finally, let’s consider weight. Many ubilt utility trailers have a licenced weight of 700 kg. and this means that the weight of the trailer and everything carried by it cannot exceed 700 kg. even if the trailer is capable of carrying more. Beware of overloading trailer components as well. Tires and axles have maximum weight capacities that cannot be exceeded.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR OFFICE A person is qualified to be nominated, elected, and to hold office as a member of local government if they meet the following criteria: x Canadian citizen; x 18 years of age or older; x resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed; x a person or the commander of an armed forces unit who has been granted freedom of the municipality, if that person is a Canadian citizen; and x not disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or from being nominated for, being elected to, or holding office. Chris explained they wanted to get involved after meeting Hull at a Cops for Kids event. “I was impressed that he had put so much time and effort into the project,” he said. “We thought if there was anything we could do to help out then we should.”

The men had just launched their own brand of locally made beef jerky which has been selling in many stores in the area and beyond. “This is huge for us. This is one iPad for a child who needs it,” Hull said. “To have a local business help local kids is what this is all about. I want to thank them for helping take this on.” Another barbecue will be held at Overwaitea on July 21 where the jerky will be on sale.

Memories I feel a warmth around me Like your presence is so near, And I close my eyes to visualize Your face when you were here, I endure the times we spent together And they are locked inside my heart, For as long as I have those memories We will never be apart, Even though we cannot speak no more My voice is always there, Because every night before I sleep I have you in my prayer.

If I could have a lifetime wish A dream that would come true I’d pray to God with all my heart For yesterday and you A thousand words can’t bring you back I know because I’ve tried And neither will a million tears I know because I’ve cried. Visitor Centre has something for everyone With the Summer season kicked off and more travellers passing through the region, the staff at the British Columbia Visitor’s Centre (BCVC) are helping people learn more about what they can do and great places to visit. “We offer province-wide booking for accommodation and activities and we also offer excellent travel counselling all at no cost. Our well trained counsellors can advise on a variety of things to see and do as well as offering lots of reasons to stay right here in Golden, said Manager of BCVC in Golden Lynne Romano. “A few years ago the value of the visitor centre study done here at the BCVC gave us great insight into our ability to serve visitors. (Visit www.hellobc.com for the report). Our new retail selections are fun and exciting and we have Super Natural BC products too. During the Summer months Romano said there would be a great deal to do at the centre. “We have an interpretive program which will be offered again this summer giving local attractions the platform to showcase their business to our visitors. We will also have videos about the Kicking Horse Canyon project and Parks Canada. Burgess Shale will also do a demonstration a few times over the summer, she said. “BC 100 Moments Campaign has just taken off and travellers and locals can come in for a free postcard that they can send to family and friends to share our magnificent area and province. Burgess Shale is one of the ‘100 moments’ and we are excited to partner with them to make sure people don’t miss the new offering that gets more people in front of the rich history that is just inside Yoho National Park. Romano also hoped that more locals come in to plan their BC adventure. “I am always very proud of what staff can do to save them money and make their holiday a little more enjoyable knowing that accommodations and booked activities are planned, and their job is just to show up and have fun. Once last year we planned a trip for two locals to Toffino for a week holiday booking all of their accom-

modations, Capilano Bridge and a whale watching tour and saved them over $500. Not only that but when you book here you also get extra benefits like front of the line service or a discount or a free gelato, she said. The centre has also recently launched a social media campaign on Facebook at British Columbia Visitor Centre and on Twitter @BCVCGolden. The centre staff will be a great mix with demographics spanning across five generations. Romano believes the centre offers a great deal to Golden and the surrounding area. “Golden is very lucky to have such a beautiful building and the opportunity to be the ‘gateway’ to the province. The BCVC is a hub of information for travellers but also the junction where visitors make big decisions about what they want to see. Our counsellors are trained to be sure that everyone has the opportunity to see all that Golden offers, and we are dedicated to our community and our province. We also feel blessed to work in a LEEDS building with such a unique design. Our Tourism Golden partners do a great job getting people here and then we are the welcoming team, she said. They work with activity providers and accommodators to maximize their exposure to the travellers through the Tourism BC listings program and booking systems. “There is way too much to do in Golden to stay less than three days, so let us help you find that hike, book that raft, voyage that float, or glide the gondola to a fabulous lunch. And that is just the first day. We will also set up a horse back ride, book your tee time and get you close to a grizzly. And that is the second day... You are going to take a trip back in time on the third day and visit the Pedestrian Bridge see a concert in the Spirit Square and eat some fabulous home baked bread from the Farmers’ Market.... I guess you will need more time because you have not seen wolves yet or the buffalo ranch nor have you been to Thompson Falls. The real adventurer will need to stay even longer to take in the Kicking Horse River on a raft, jump from a plane or paraglide off Mount. 7. The centre is open 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. until labour day.

A seat to be had

Thanks to the police

And suddenly there are two spots open for a byelection in September. The byelection that was called will have an extra spot to fill after the announcement that Coun. John Jackson has had to step down. Now is the chance for people who want to make a difference to take a shot at getting elected and have their voices heard as a councillor in the Town of Golden’s very comfortable chamber setting. By Darryl Crane The interesting fact to this is we will now see how many people step up to take on the challenge that being a councillor provides. Being involved in the political game and rather complicated system is never an easy choice for any person to make. There are many people who have their lives altered when one person jumps into the deep end of politics. I myself remember the discussions my parents had over my father getting more involved in politics, and also heard the stories of other family members who took on the challenge and sat as a representative. The easy answer is to say it is not for everyone. But like many things involved with politics the answer is never quite that easy. Over the past few months people in and around Golden have had many different issues for which they have been very passionate, and all of them end up in a political realm at different times. Pool changes hit the municipal side of things just as the Bridge to Bridge project has gotten in the minds of hundreds of people. Road rescue issues have been on the agenda of both local and provincial government, and federally park cutbacks have had people getting in touch with many representatives in Ottawa. Overall the heat has been on, and occasionally there has been a blow up or two witnessed along the way. People have been voicing their concerns, having their say and coming out in large numbers to stress the importance of what they believe are decisions that could change different aspects of their lives. But now there are some holes that have to be filled. And as with every election, it starts with the question of who is going to run. No one would have predicted in less than a year, two spots would now be open on the council. But here we are, sitting in a position where two seats have indeed become available. I have always felt it is easy to sit from the outside and comment on what others do, whether it is in politics, sports or any aspect of our everyday lives. Realizing you should not have tried to eat a six-pound burrito seems obvious after the fact, but when everyone was cheering you on at the start you could have been caught up in the moment. So over the next few weeks people will have the chance to serve all of the citizens in Golden and have their voice heard as a councillor. And as I have said, for the many who sit back and cheer or jeer from the sideline, this could be a shot at getting in the game. So take a look at your lives and see if it is a good fit, because your chance to make a difference may just be a nomination packet away.

- My Way -

I would like to take this opportunity to speak up for the fine police officers we have here and all over Canada. For the past while the majority of what we see and read in the news regarding our police is very negative. I suppose good news isn’t very popular. I for one am proud of the many fine men and women who serve as law enforcement officers. It seems like a thankless job that requires a tremendous amount of personal strength to be able to deal with the sometimes horrific side of society, both self inflicted and accidental.

Community Greenhouse The B to B proposal has been rejected by the people of Golden. For the Town council not to see the writing on the wall shows a most dogmatic attitude and narrow-minded view of a few people. I have a proposal that could be adopted and form a useful function for the people of Golden. My idea is to build a non-profit greenhouse so Golden can have access to year-round fresh vegetables. This is a proposal

AUDITED

Nola Dusevic Golden that would have a positive and healthy benefit to people at a fraction of the cost of B to B and supply several full time jobs. The key to this proposal would be to ask Louisiana Pacific for a use of land and access to wasted heat energy from their condensate pond. Many community greenhouses are in use and the sophisticated equipment is readily available to grow a variety of crops hydroponically and organically. Let’s use technology to make our lives better for the future. Fred Schiesser Golden

Ladies turn at the movie theatre This one is definitely for the ladies. When it comes to movie night, I must admit, I’m usually on the guy side of the “what to watch” argument. I love the “shoot ‘em up” action, the crude lowbrow comedy, and I’ve never shied away from too much blood up on the screen during an epic war drama. When my friends dragged me to the Notebook, I put up more of a fight than their boyfriends did. On countless girls nights out, I’ve been subjected to hours of boring romantic storylines, and sensitive guys who always realize the error of their

ways, and come back to sweep the heroine off her feet. Ugh. Enter Magic Mike. Finally, here is a chick flick I can get behind. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure this movie will follow the typical romantic comedy formula. But this time I don’t care. The movie could be 90 minutes of watching paint dry on a wall, it won’t matter. As long as those scantily boys are dancing in front of it. And I don’t think I’m alone in this thought. So for the few days the movie comes to Golden, I think you can expect a theatre full of women.

A community garden that gives more than food back to Golden Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net The growing has started at the community garden in Golden located on the corner on 9th Street South and 9th Avenue South in the backyard of the Ruth Wixon House. The garden has been producing food for a number of years and gives people the chance to learn more about gardening while helping out other local residents. John Jenkins, the garden assistant, explained the growing season started in mid-May this year. “Everything is coming along really good. We went for a crammed style of planting this year. Everything is

intended to be full of food,” he said. Jenkins said the garden is meant to provide some food for 30 to 40 families. “I think this is important for every town. It is set up for the food bank and I think it is set up in a way to provide them with locally grown, and in our case this year organically grown, foods,” Jenkins said. Building on this type of garden is something he hopes will catch on with others in the future, where some kind of expansion will happen over time. The garden is also open to having new people drop by and help where they can. “We are always looking for volunteers. Times are set up but we can be flexible.

Real Estate Report. The Kootenay Real Estate Board (KREB), in data released last week, reported that the total value of real estate sales for the East and West Kootenays for the six months that ended June 30, 2012 was $279 million, up 28 per cent from the same period for 2011. The total number of properties that traded hands in the first half of 2012 was reported to be 1,071, up from

John Jenkins is just one of the people who are working hard to make sure the community garden in Golden continues to produce healthy food for the Golden Food Bank. Jenkins stressed how important volunteers are to the project, but also said the garden is a great place to learn organic gardening while sharing ideas. Darryl Crane/ Star Photo

People can come here and learn about gardening,” Jenkins said. The educational side of the process is one of the fun benefits Jenkins sees when people do come by and help at the garden. “People coming to share and or gain knowledge about gardening while volunteering is a cool thing. Sharing knowledge about gardening and inspiring others to learn on their own is a great way to pick some things up,” he said. Anyone interested in learning more about the project can email Jenkins at johnjenkins01@hotmail. com or call him at 250-3444961 or through the Golden Food Bank.

907 for the same period last year; an increase of 18 per cent. In Golden, hopes of a first quarter real estate revival were dashed by disappointing second quarter sales. Historically the second quarter, April May and June, is the strongest quarter for real estate sales in the town of Golden; however the second quarter of 2012 generated lack-luster results. A total of 11 properties were sold in the second quarter of 2012 generating total sales of $2.3 million, compared

with 23 homes that sold in the same three-month period in 2011 having a total value of $5 million. Cumulative residential property sales in the town of Golden for the six month period ending June 30 2012 were $3.5 million a drop of 36 per cent from total sales of $5.4 million for the same period in 2011. Seventeen properties were sold during the first half of the year compared to 24 properties that traded hands in the same period for the previous year.

In Rural Golden, 23 residential properties sold in the first half of 2012, compared to 19 properties that sold during the same period in 2011. Total real estate sales for the six months ending June 30, were $6.4 million in 2012 compared with $6.2 million in 2011, an increase of three per cent. With a large inventory of properties for sale, the strong buyer’s market persists in Golden and will continue throughout 2012.

Celtic sounds at Summer Kicks

PATIO NOW OPEN

Golden Star Staff reporter@thegoldenstar.net It's Scotland's turn to showcase their musical heritage at Kicking Horse Culture's Summer Kicks. The Edinburgh-based six-piece Celtic band, Shooglenifty, is taking the stage at the Spirit Square on Wednesday July 25 at 7 p.m. Over the past dozen or so years Shooglenifty’s unique twist on the traditional has won them an extensive and devoted fanbase not only across Europe, North America and Australasia, but as far as India, Malaysia and Japan. The band is known to blend traditional Scottish music with influences ranging from electronica to alternative rock. Since the release of their first album in 1994, Shooglenifty has racked up some prestigious performances including a show for Nelson Mandela, Emperor Akihito of Japan (not at the same time), and they were also the first band to incite a stage invasion at the Sydney Opera House. Among the current Shooglenifty line-up are four original members Angus Grant, Malcolm Crosbie Garry Finlayson and James Mackintosh, while the bassist Quee MacArthur and the Tasmanian expat Luke Plumb, on mandolin, banjo and bouzouki, joined five years ago. The band's collective CV takes in backgrounds as diverse as Crosbie's apprenticeship in alt.rock obscurity,

Beneath their folky-looking exterior lurks electric as well as acoustic guitar, samples and programming as well as "real" percussion, while Finlayson switches between regular banjo and his own customised hi-tech version, or "banjax." All

six players, though, are maestros of effects, distortion, feedback and improvisation. The resulting sound marries traditionally based tunes - primarily Scottish in style, but featuring a wealth of other world-music flavours, with the rhythmic energy, inventiveness and sophistication of contemporary dance music.

Serving the Columbia Valley

Golden Eagle Grill is open Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net Hidden in the middle of the Golden Golf Club is one of the town's best kept culinary gems. The same Golden Eagle Grill that keeps the skiers and snowboarders fed at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in the winter, is serving Golden's golfers all summer long. "Being at the golf course this year is really great," said Brian Siff, food and beverage manager for Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. This is the second year KHMR and the Golden Eagle Grill have been running the restaurant in the clubhouse. "The ski hill can be its own little world up there, and here you get to be involved with a completely different group of local people." Chef Ryan Jackson, along with resort head chef Sylvain Bourget

who oversees all the restaurants associated with KHMR, created a menu they hope will accommodate a diverse group of people. "It's a pretty great menu, and it's competitively priced. And everything is homemade, we make our own sauces, and bread our own chicken tenders," said Siff. "We make everything from scratch, so it gives us room to play," said Jackson, who has had the opportunity to flex creative muscles with the men's and ladies’ night specials. "For the men's and ladies’ nights it's anything goes. It's a lot of fun," he said. One night he served up Flintstone Ribs, and is especially excited to be preparing the 122-pound pig roast for the golf club's Hog Open at the end of the month. Jackson, an avid golfer himself, has particularily enjoyed

developing a relationship with the club members. Golfers and campers at the golf club's RV Park are well aware of the restaurants appeal, but many residents of Golden are unaware it even exists. "A lot of people don't know we're out here. There are people in town don't golf, so don't realize there's a restaurant here," said Siff. "And I love our patio, I think it's one of the best ones in town... It's really unique how there's no houses, no development of any kind." All you can see from the patio is mountains, trees, and the beautiful links. The Golden Eagle Grill has an all-day menu from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and a full breakfast menu on the weekends. They are also offering a special, giving 10 per cent off lunches for all local businesses.

Local children show their artistic side in Bear Aware contest Sadie Parr Golden Bear Aware Coordinator The Golden Bear Aware colouring contest came to an end at the end of June. Seventy three bright and beautiful colouring pages were entered from locals aged two to over twenty, each entrant also contributing their “Favourite Bear Fact” and what “Step you will take to be Bear Aware in 2012.” The knowledge youth shared about bears and how to reduce humanbear conflicts by managing attractants was extremely impressive. The winners of the draw, their bear facts, and prizes are listed below. I would like to thank all youth who contributed their time, energy and thoughts to helping decorate the Golden Star office window with great artwork and bear Information.

Disaster Financial Assistance Available Provincial Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) from Emergency Management BC (EMBC) has been authorized for qualifying claimants, such as home owners, residential tenants, small businesses, farmers, charitable organizations, and local government bodies, who were unable to obtain insurance to cover these disasterrelated losses. All applicants should first check with their insurance agent to determine if their current insurance policy provides coverage for the resulting damage. As part of the DFA qualification process, businesses, farmers and charitable/volunteer organizations will need to provide a letter from their insurer indicating that they could not have purchased insurance to cover these disaster-related losses. For Applications for Disaster Financial Assistance, access EMBC's web site at http://www.pep.bc.ca/dfa_claims/dfa.html. There you will find the ‘Disaster Financial Assistance Guidelines for Private Sector’ and ‘One Step at a time – A Guide to Disaster Recovery’. Although earlier applications are encouraged, the deadline for EMBC to receive this form is October 9, 2012. As applications are received, EMBC contracted evaluators will contact the applicants to explain DFA requirements and schedule an onsite visit. On behalf of Emergency Management BC

Summer student Christopher Brown relaxes in the living room at Wixon House. Darryl Crane/Star Photo Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net In the heart of Golden their is a house where people take a journey back in time. Wixon house has been a fixture on the corner of 9th Avenue South and 9th Street South for many years, and thanks to the Golden Museum, people can go for a tour. “We are open four afternoons a week. (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) Our summer student is buzzing round the property and keeping everything in good shape for visitors,” Said Colleen Palumbo, executive director of the Golden Museum. The house is open for all visits from 1-4 p.m. on the pre mentioned days. Wixon House was built in 1893 for the first doctor who was coming to Golden to work in the town’s first proper hospital. The doctor was coming to town but did not have a

place to live. The house was sold to Arthur Wixon whose descendants lived in the house until 2007, when the last family member passed away and the house was left to the town of Golden. “It is Golden’s only residence which is protected by a bylaw,” Palumbo said. “People will see it exactly as it was the day that Ruth Wixon moved out in the hospital.” Palumbo added Wixon kept the house in pristine shape because she knew how important it was to the community. Summer student Christopher Brown, who gives the tours at the house, feels it is a great spot for both locals and tourists to come by for a visit. “It is such a good concentration of Golden’s history all in one building,” Brown said. There is no charge to get into the house though people may make a donation if they would like to.

The Golden Lions Club wish to take this opportunity to thank the Columbia basin Trust for their support in funding the installation of new sets of exterior doors to the two rental spaces in the basement of the Okanagan Regional Library. The doors provide new energyefficient access to the spaces, and will provide an improved environment for the community groups and individuals renting the space for their activities.

Darryl Crane editor@thegoldenstar.net The Kicking Horse Gymnastics team has received support from the Columbia Basin Trust and has new equipment that will help local athletes. With the grant the team has purchased two large bungee mat, a junior bungee block and a new kick bar. “What it gives us is the ability to do more repetitions on surfaces like this without injury, said coach Christine Muise. “The more bars we have means the more ability to do what we need to in a more sustainable manner. The mats not only provide a better tumbling area but also can be used in vaulting exercises as well. “It has uses in many different ways for the team, Muise said. The equipment will benefit all the children from every level who are a part of the club. “They are huge. I can thank the CBT for many pieces of the equipment in the club right now, Muise said. She went on to say the support they have been shown is one of the main reasons for the club’s ability to grow into the competitive team that exists today. “It has deepened the club and the abilities we can teach the students.

Soccer coaches Simon Slater and Shaun Watson, centre, take a photo with the young players who took part in the Challenger Sports soccer camp in Golden last week. Jessica Schwitek/Star Photo

Coaches from England land in Golden for some soccer lessons Jessica Schwitek reporter2@thegoldenstar.net Two coaches from England brought their obsession for soccer, or football, all the way to Golden last week when they hosted the Challenger Sports soccer camp. “It’s all over the US and Canada, I think there’s about three and a half thousand camps all over. And each week we go to a different camp and a different place,” said Shaun Watson, one of the two coaches who ran the Challenger Sports camp in Golden. After 20 years of research in more than 2,000

communities in the US and Canada, Challenger has developed an innovative way to teach young soccer players that revolves around fun, personal challenge, maximum participation and constant positive feedback. The program attracts thousands of potential coaches, trying out for the opportunity to spend the summer travelling around North America and coaching. “Over a thousand coaches come over from England, it’s a pretty well known thing,” said Watson. “It’s quite hard. You have to apply, show them all your credentials, and get references from clubs we’ve coached back in Eng-

land. And then you go to a recruitment day and see if you pass that or not, and then there’s a training weekend. Then you get shipped out.” The coaches teach the basic skills to young players ages three to 16, although the younger kids tend to focus more on having fun than developing their technique. “The older ones we try to teach a bit more, passing, shooting that sort of thing,” said Simon Slater, the other Challenger coach at the Golden camp. “We try to teach them some new moves, but also the main skills and fundamentals.” This was the first trip to Canada for both

Watson and Slater, although Slater’s brother has been a ski instructor in Lake Louise for four winters. They head to Cranbrook next, and they are excited to see more of the country. “This is the first time I’ve been here, but I’ve always wanted to come. It’s been amazing, even just the drive from Calgary to here was awesome,” said Watson. “I’m just in awe of everything.” “I just want to see a bear. Not now, while I’m in a car,” added Slater. To see more pictures from the soccer camp, go to www.thegoldenstar.net.

BC Summer Games first step for many London-bound athletes Lia Threlfall Communications Manager BC Games Society When the Olympic and Paralympic Games begin in London, there are a number of Canadian athletes who will remember their first multisport experience at a BC Games. Twenty-four athletes on the Canadian Olympic team started their journey to London with a trip to the BC Games including 2008 Olympic gold medallist Carol Huynh (Wrestling), and recent Giro d’Italia winner Ryder Hesjedal (Cycling). As part of the athlete development pathway, the BC Games are a first multi-sport

experience for young athletes that lead towards provincial and national teams and ultimately the Olympic or Paralympic Games. The BC Games are part of a strong provincial sport system that provides an outstanding training environment and support services for high-performance athletes. Forty per cent of the Canadian Olympic team live or train in B.C. Shot-putter Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops is one of Canada’s great medal hopes at the 2012 Olympic Games. He is a shining example of a B.C. athlete who has developed to international success with support through all the stages of the athlete pathway. Involved at a young age

with the Kamloops Track and Field Club, he represented the Thompson-Okanagan Zone at the 1995 and 1996 BC Summer Games. Success as part of Team BC at the 2001 Canada Games was next before winning gold for Canada at the 2007 and 2010 Pan American Games. All eyes are on this BC Games alumnus to better his fourth place finish from the 2008 Olympic Games. Swimmer Brent Hayden of Mission is another medal contender in London. Brent competed at the 1998 BC Summer Games and reflected, “The BC Summer Games was the point in my career when I realized that I had the potential to go further.

It was soon after that that I decided to switch from being a summer swimmer to training all year round. It is clear that I wouldn’t have noticed my own potential without the BC Summer Games.” The full Paralympic team will be named later this summer but former BC Games athletes Bo Hedges of Fort St. John (Wheelchair Basketball) and Adam Rahier of Powell River (Swimming) will be part of the team. Over 2,300 athletes between the ages of 10 and 18 will be at the 2012 BC Summer Games, which kick off just one week prior to the start of the Olympics. It is an inspiring experi-

ence that will ignite the dreams of many young athletes to pursue their sport to the highest level. A veteran of the Canadian Women’s Soccer team, Karina LeBlanc from Maple Ridge remembered, “It was an amazing experience because I did dream of one day being at the Olympic Games and it was the closest thing for me to it, so it made me want to be there that much more!” Watch for the next generation of Olympians and Paralympians at the 2012 BC Summer Games, July 19-22.
