Beware of transformed trails BREANNE MASSEY West Kootenay Advertiser
The realities of spring runoff could jilt cyclists who have a need for speed. High water levels have dramatically altered the terrain of the Kootenay Columbia Trails Society (KCTS) and the society has asked the community to practice safety while using the trails this season. Trails in the area have been significantly altered by the heavy spring runoff, creating all sorts of new risks for outdoor enthusiasts, said Isaac Saban, president of KCTS. “I think the biggest concern is for mountain bikers traveling down at high speed, even if there’s a certain speed that they’re used to traveling at, they may not have been on the trails this year,” explained Saban. “You could come up to a trail very quickly and it will be far rougher or have more debris than there used to be.” Saban went on to explain that it’s important to learn about the terrain before rushing back into extreme sports this season, at least until the trails
have been repaired. “They’ve all been affected to some degree, but only five or six were really heavily impacted,” he said. “I would hope by the end of the trail season, we will have most of them rebuilt and back in order, but it could be mid-September by the time we get to all of the trails.” Water is part of the issue, but it also comes down to crew
“Hopefully we can improve some of the drainage issues...” Isaac Saban, President, KCTS
availability. The KCTS has a crew of four people who are out working on repairing the trails everyday. The trails manager, Stewart Spooner, will spend some time on the ground as well. “They’ll be out there with hand tools doing their best to repair the tread,” Saban explained. “Hopefully, we can improve some of the drainage issues so similar problems won’t occur in the fu-
ture.” The crew is currently working on the north end of the Seven Summits trail and will repair Crown Point, near the south side of Trail Creek, and Raven’s Rock, a trail leading from the hospital to Miral Hieghts, when the water levels decrease. Routine maintenance will also take place throughout the course of the season. The society maintains 145 kilometres of trails for non-motorized use around the area from Fruitvale, Montrose, throughout Trail and into Warfield and Rossland. In the last year there were 120,000 trail usages, with $85,000 in funding from local government, and through membership money, donations and other fund raising initiatives they have a budget of nearly $100,000. The society’s site now includes elevation profiles of the trails, detailed topographic maps in pdf form, uploaded pictures of trail features and a brief set of directions to get to the trail head. cal Creatures – this year’s Sandsations theme. They’ve certainly come up with a fascinating, wideopen category for the 2012 effort. Joy explained on July 13 that the first day will be the installing of the sand in the forms, then the carving will start and continue until completion on the Sunday. “This event is a huge hit with families, said Barrett, “as they watch the process of sculpting from an up-close perspective, with the kids learning some tips for their own sand creations! Vogelaar, who took part in last year’s sand sculpting showcase, has something in mind although the name of it escaped

him during a July 13 conversation. He did, however, reveal it’s a monster from Norse mythology. “I’ve got to work out a plan that works within how we stack the sand, he said. The Winlaw resident says it’s been ten years since he first sculpted sand, 20 since he first sculpted snow. “A friend said I should try sand so I went to work with her at Harrison Hotsprings, the artist recalled. “Then I kind of got the bug. The following year I got invited to a contest in Ottawa, the highlight was a free train trip home because Via Rail was the sponsor. That’s when I teamed up with
my teammate David Ducharme. That September we actually won the world championship which was a real surprise for us, and everybody else, I think. Take a look at Peter’s work and you’ll likely agree with the judges in terms of his skill. Denis and John are sure to make a strong showing as well. Sandsations, beneficiary of funding from a number of sources including TECK Corporation Thursday to Sunday at Pioneer Arena, then the works will remain on display until time, drying and erosion do their inevitable work. The rapid rise of Castlegar’s SculptureWalk has been well documented, and deservedly so. The program, in just its year has shown exponential growth and its future could not look brighter. “Sandsations is a popular sidebar to the annual SculptureWalk and this year’s effort goes from Thursday to Sunday, July 19-22 outside the Pioneer Arena at 925 Columbia Avenue. Three West Kootenay artists are featured year, all with more than enough talent to share. Peter Vogelaar (Winlaw), and Nelson-based sculptors Denis Kleine and John McKinnon will be the attractions this time around and you’re welcome to stop by and see how it’s done. “We are so lucky to have the world-class talent of John, Peter and Denis right on our doorstep says SculptureWalk Executive Director Joy Barrett. “It’s going to be an exciting process to see these creatures being formed, quite literally from the ground up! The creatures Joy mentions are Mythi-

Kaslo pitcher milks a $310 payout GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser
Part of a series looking at local items for sale on eBay. A Medalta milk pitcher from Kaslo sold last week for $310 US. On the front is written “H. Giegerich/Ask for Ogilvie’s Royal Household Four/Kaslo B.C.” Vintage items by Medalta pottery of Medicine Hat often command high prices. Henry Giegerich was a merchant in Kaslo, Ainsworth, Three Forks, and Sandon. In 1891, he came to Ainsworth from Montana and established a store at the corner of Wright and Sutton streets. After fire wiped out the town he rebuilt in the same spot. In the 1910s, J.B. Fletcher took over the business, but Giegerich’s name remained on the building at least

Giegerich’s name. In Kaslo, Giegerich built 344 Front Street after the great fire of 1894. For many years, it housed the Big G store of Byers, Giegerich, and Green. During World War II, it was a school for Japanese Canadians,
and of late it has been the White Goat Gallery. A great photo exists of Giegerich’s store on Reco Avenue in Sandon, with a big sign advertising Giant Powder fuse caps and Goodwin candles. A stop along the Kaslo and Slocan Railway was also named after him. • Three glass plate negatives purportedly from Greenwood and Midway sold for $20 to $21 US each. One showed an old schoolhouse, which the seller admitted might have been from the Cawston area or somewhere in the South Okanagan. Another showed a smelter, presumably at Greenwood or Boundary Falls, with a denuded hillside in the foreground. The third showed several wooden buildings. The seller said with a magnifying glass, the sign “Midway restaurant”
was readable. The negatives measured 8.5 x 6.5 inches. • A nice bird’s-eyeview of Trail sold for $49 US. It was mailed in 1912 to a Mrs. Dr. Roth of Battle Creek, Michigan. The message read: “This is the spot where I am having such a good time and a good rest. Hope little Lawrence and Herman are well. I don’t suppose I will know the baby when I get home. Miss K.” A rareish postcard showing Trail’s Central School and city hall, mailed in 1912 by a T.N. Davis to a Miss Stockwell in Nelson, also went for $31 US. The message noted: “This is a view of the new school built last year.” Another copy of this card sold last November for $28. More pictures of the mentioned items can be found at nelsonstar.com.
Grand forks stop for The Washboard Union KARL YU West Kootenay Advertiser
Vancouver-based band The Washboard Union is currently touring the province and will be in Grand Forks this Friday, July 20 at Studio B. Washboard Union vocalist and banjo player Chris Duncombe described the seven-piece band’s music as strongly influenced by country. “The Washboard Union is a lot of things. When we were growing up, we were exposed to so much really, really old country from my dad, Sons of the Pioneers to Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings and all that sort of stuff,” Duncombe explained. “I think we’ve taken pieces from all of that and made it our own. There are elements

of bluegrass in it and Americana. We were really in love with those songwriters who told stories and I think that’s what a lot of our music does now.” The Washboard Union also has been influenced by a number of other musical genres as well.
“We all grew up on punk rock and hip hop, we’re not that old in terms of our age,” he said. “It comes from a lot of different sides. When you have a band of seven guys, it’s just sort of natural that there’re a lot of different influences.” The band released its self-titled debut in
late-June and Grand Forks is currently the lone KootenayBoundary stop on their summer tour and, while based on the coast, Duncombe is not unfamiliar with the Grand Forks area. “Aaron (Grain, Chris’ brother) and I both grew up in Kelowna, so I’ve fished in

the Grand Forks area and I’ve been around there as a kid,” explained Duncombe, adding that he and has brother or the band haven’t played in Grand Forks before. “We’re thrilled to be able to come up and play Grand Forks,” he went on to say.

realize how many communities there once were. “The work on that one town made me realize there were so many, she says. Larsen adds while a number of books have already been published on such places as Burton, Edgewood, and Nakusp, her project will synthesize them all. As a history instructor at Selkirk College, she has longed for a single volume covering the whole area. “It’s so scattered and it’s hard for students to get a sense of the history of the whole region, she says. She’s particularly intrigued with Oatscott, the Indian reservation opposite Burton that reverted to the Crown in 1953. “I’ve always wondered how that land came into the hands of the province because it was privately owned, she says. “I’m hoping I can shed light on that. She’s also curious about Robson, where she lives on what used to be a large orchard. She’s hoping to use previously untapped resources, and already has some leads. The Castlegar Heritage Society has 50 pages of transcripts from interviews done 20 years ago, plus materials that used to be housed at the Kootenay Gallery. The Arrow Lakes Historical Society has over 400 taped interviews conducted by Milt Parent dating back to 1972. And later this month Larsen will visit the BC Archives to listen to other audio interviews of Arrow Lakes residents from the Imbert Orchard collection. She’s also working with Bruce Rohn, who was raised in Renata, and has many photos. “It’s a huge project, she says. Continued on P. A10

“I want it to be well researched and academic but for a popular audience. I’d like to be able to use it at the college. I want people to be able to pick it up and read it.” Larsen applied unsuccessfully for project funding last year, but thanks to support from local heritage groups, was luckier this time around. The grant only covers the research phase. Afterward she’ll have to find a publisher. The book is tentatively titled And Then the Waters Rose: Histories and Memories of the Arrow Lakes. Once published,
Larsen plans to do a reading tour of the entire Columbia Basin, noting East Kootenay residents were similarly displaced by hydro-electric development. Larsen has two other titles under her belt. She turned her thesis on women working at Cominco during World War II into Sewing the Seeds: Women, Work, and Memory. She also coauthored a limitededition history of the Castlegar pulp mill, Working Together: Celgar’s First 50 Years in the West Kootenay. Larsen can be reached at 250-3653900 or tjmk@shaw. ca.

Cool fun! It was a pile of fun and a pile of sand for youngsters in Camp Cawabunga at Trail’s Gyro Park this week as they took turns burying themselves in the cool, wet sand near the spray park. With two groups—six to eight year olds, and nine to 12 year olds—of a total of 16 kids the program’s three counselors were kept busy for the week. To register your kids for an upcoming session—for the week or the day—of the camp and the Summer Adventure Camp (9-12 year olds), contact Lisa Manaigre at 364-0888. Timothy Schafer photo

• Salmo Supportive Housing Society, Salmo • Elk Valley Family Society, Fernie • Nelson CARES Society, Nelson • Revelstoke Community Housing Society, Revelstoke The partners evaluated nine submissions against the criteria requirements of the Request for Pre-qualifications (RFPQ) issued in March. The four successful proponents will be sent an invitational Request for Proposals (RFP) to develop a full response, including a complete business case, for their project. At this time, they may also be eligible to receive support from BC Housing to engage a consultant to assist in developing their response to the RFP; however, final granting decisions under the ARHi will not be made until the next phase of the RFP process. The deadline for the RFP will be set for fall 2012, and CBT and BC Housing will evaluate the proposals to determine which projects will receive grant funding under the ARHi before the end of the year. Communities, including proponents unsuccessful in this phase, will have an opportunity to respond to a second call for proposals in the spring of 2013. All inquiries about the RFPQ evaluation process and outcomes should be directed to Mike Lachocki at BC Housing at purchasing@bchousing. org. CBT is contributing $5 million toward this three-year, $10-million initiative that is being delivered in partnership with BC Housing to support new affordable rental housing projects in communities across the Columbia Basin. Learn more about the program here. CBT supports efforts to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the residents of the Columbia Basin. News/Community City trims its juice use
Rossland briefs After six months on the energy diet, Rossland has cut back on its energy use by more than 2,220 gigajoules of natural gas and 1,478,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. It was done through energy efficient renovations to existing homes and small businesses. The diet took shape last year when the Sustainability Com-
mission noted the average Rossland home, consumed 36 per cent more electricity than other homes across the province. They approached FortisBC, their electricity and natural gas provider, to see if help was available.
Old Glory hike For the eighth year in a row, the Friends of the Rossland Range will head up to
Old Glory Peak this month. The hike is the first of two such hikes the society does this summer, and everyone is welcome to come along. The dates are July 28 and Aug. 25. The hike takes about 5-8 hours total and takes you to the top of the highest peak in the Rossland Range. The hike begins at 9 a.m., both days at the Old Glory trailhead on Highway 3B.

News/Community
Nelson’s new money unveiled As complementary currencies sprout up all over the world, Nelson becomes the newest community to make its own money. Columbia Commu-
currencies have been shown to create resilient local economies and build community interdependence, reducing the effects of national and global recessions. “We’ve taken the ex-
in the money supply. We compete for the always scarce resource of money. Bankruptcies and economic recessions are an inevitable consequence of this system. Nelson’s new mon-
to support local businesses because that’s where they can spend it. “The banks are lucky because the federal government requires us to pay taxes with the money banks
nity Dollars, a community initiative two years in the making, represents a growing trend of communities finding their own solutions to ailing economies. “Creating community currencies is perfectly legal, said Michael Sheely, coordinator for the community dollars. “Probably because it seems too good to be true is why most communities haven’t taken this step. However, this trend is changing fast. C omp l e m e nt a r y
periences from Barter Bucks, Nelson’s previous currency and customized a proven system used around the world to implement in our region, said Bradley Roulston, Certified Financial Planner and key player in the Nelson’s movement to make local money. “The vast majority of the money we use is created when we take a loan from a bank, explained Sheely. “The bank creates the money we borrow, but not the interest they charge. That creates an inherent shortage
ey is different. We print the money and give it to non-profits and community groups that help make Nelson a better place, said Sheely. “The businesses that have agreed to accept the currency help secure the value of the currency, so we let them decide which groups we give it to. “Then people who want to support those groups can buy it off them. Rather than making donations people trade currencies so they don’t lose spending power. And it encourages them
create, said Roulston. “That ensures the money’s value. Starting a new currency requires a lot of education to build acceptance. Especially since people have spent their entire lives believing that only one model can exist. A live demonstration of how this all works happened as part of the launch on Wednesday, July 18. If you’d like more information about this topic, please call Michael Sheely at (250) 551-7700.

Sculpture Talk
Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.
‘Chieftain’ (bronze) Last year, first time Sculpturewalk entrant Daniel Kloc was probably the most surprised person in the room when his brooding bronze ‘ Raven’ was chosen as the overall winner in the Artistic Merit category. He shouldn’t have been. The judges recognized both his talent and the aesthetic and artistic qualities of the piece. While the $3000 top prize that accompanied the distinction was welcome, Kloc feels the support and respect of his fellow artists is as important as the monetary aspect. “Naturally, everyone who is chosen to display hopes to be singled out in exhibitions like this one,” says Kloc. “The sculptures were fantastic and every one of the warranted serious consideration, so I was pleased to be honoured with this level of award.” That was last year of course. Once again Kloc has submitted a piece which will surely merit consideration. ‘Chieftain’ is another bronze that draws on Kloc’s love of history and nature. It also incorporates classical influences from medieval European figurative work as studied by the artist during travels in and around the Czech Republic exploring his family roots. Kloc has captured the weatherbeaten, world-weary countenance of one of the original peoples’ leaders in brilliant detail. The strong nose, wary eyes and pursed lips are expressive, the paint on his face adds to it. He wears a tunic/breastplate and full ceremonial regalia – a bear claw necklace at his throat - as befits his exalted status. There is acquired knowledge, pride and wisdom along with a hint of resigned acceptance etched in the deep lines of his face. ‘Chieftain’ portrays a powerful figure in
marvellous detail; true to life in form and overflowing with life learned and lived in soul and spirit. “My inspiration comes from the world of nature, primitive cultures and old world Europe mainly,” says Kloc. “I have tried to incorporate aspects of all three in this year’s entry. With ‘Chieftain’ the first two are fairly apparent, inherently connected by the subject alone. In the facial detail there might be touches of the third, I’ll leave that to the viewer to decide.”
“My inspiration comes from the world of nature, primitive cultures and old world Europe mainly.” Daniel Kloc
Like many other local artists appearing this year, Kloc is a graduate of the Kootenay School of the Arts program. He then spent a number of years working at Pyramid Bronzeworks in Kelowna to increase his understanding and knowledge of bronze sculpting. “Between studies, work experience gained at Pyramid and travels abroad, I’ve learned a lot. The satisfaction in creating something beautiful and lasting is powerful.” As is Kloc’s subject, and finished result.

ffor th the
Week
Jull 20, 2012 Ju July
Tip of the Week: The Astrological portrait indicates revolutionary times. According to the Astrological portrait, social, political and economic revolution is destined to occur now and it is. We see these in the weather as well. Deciphering the core themes of these cycles and their scope and implication is important. Astrology recognizes very large cycles yet also provides bridges wherein shorter cycles are considered. The shortest is the day cycle, then there is the Lunar Cycle and jumping to the bigger picture as in the cyclic relationships between the far planets we can measure 500 year cycles, as with Neptune and Pluto. The approximate 26,000 year Precessional Cycle, from which we get the Astrological Ages, as in Pisces and now Aquarius (based on mean average division of the constellations) is one of the larger cycles considered. It is this major cycle in which all the various systems of Astrology share an important common denominator. The Sun currently conjunct the Galactic Equator, which is a major focus of Mayan Astrology/Cosmology brings special emphasis to 2012 which is basically understood to be the ‘official start’ of the 5th Root Race! Closer to the immediate implications, we are all challenged to adapt and this is where Astrology can prove to be a very valuable resource.
ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)
LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)
TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)
SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)
The season is reaching mid stride and this stands to raise the drama levels as well. Whether this increase implies fun or stress for you depends on your attitude. You can expect your own emotional and energy levels to increase. You will likely want more attention, as in ‘it’s my turn’. Ideally you will take time to play and/or enjoy the performances of others too. At your core you are very creative and perhaps very proud as well. So intrinsic is this root trait that you may not recognize it. Yet it is pride that is the anchor of stubbornness. Feeling confident and secure is the flip side. Finances aside, this is linked to expressing yourself. Honour the fact that there is no other like you and how you do things is ‘your way’ beyond compare.
A diligent focus to increase returns continues. This may imply more income or recognition or attention or support or acknowledgement, or all of the above. Your creative focus is bound to increase – a gift from Mercury Retrograde; the trickster is anything but obvious. Yet, achieving clarity with others and mutual understanding is the key to getting your due.
CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)
Taking inventory of all you have is now in focus. Beyond stuff, this implies your gifts, talents, skills and abilities in general. The danger of getting stuck in the past is common and emphasized now. Your willingness to squarely tackle fixed behaviour patterns, self-concepts and beliefs is ideal, if not essential, for success.
LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)
What dreams may come is linked to the quality of dreams gestating in your mind. Whether you are dreaming to remember why you were born and/or dreaming new possibilities, the time is right. The greatest danger now is that you will slip into the dream and lose all perspective on your life as it is now. Intend to weave dreams with conscious co-creation.
When Saturn turned Direct in late June you especially might have noticed it. Delays and restrictions up to then may have been endlessly annoying. Now you are in a new stride, as though heading for new territory. The more momentum you can muster over the next 2-3 months the better. If necessary, review all prior successes to increase confidence levels.
It is likely that you are standing between two worlds or between what once was and what is to be, in a pretty big way. At worst, you feel a little lost. If so, you are wise to reach for higher ground somehow, to gain an overview and to see a bigger picture. It is also likely that some big changes are brewing and you are wise to focus to strengthen your core sense of security.
CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)
Clearing the old to make way for the new is the call now. Taking preliminary measures to identify and/or activate the new that you want is as important as the clearing. Getting more answers than providing information is likely. You may want to hold your cards closely now and play your hand as well as you can, even if it requires that you bluff, as necessary.
Your focus is getting sharper and this trend will continue. If you are in-tune, this will become especially evident this week. If it is not so obvious, you may be due for a ‘tune-up’. Be willing to increase your outreach accordingly. With Mercury Retrograde, however, make doubly sure all your communications are mutually understood and your notes are accurate.
AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)
VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)
PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)
It may be time to retreat for a while. If this is not possible, you may at least enjoy and/or benefit from working behind the scenes. Reviewing what has worked in the past but which may not be working so well now stands to be a good use of your time. Enjoying a retrospective cycle means you will emerge from it clearer about everything.

A stimulation of your closest relationships is in the spotlight. Increasing the scope and quality of your communications is implied. What mode of communications is the other consideration? While talking is generally good, body language can also go a long way and actions are much louder yet, than words and gestures. Diplomatic exchanges are likely, yet speak your truth too!
Creating a healthier rhythm somehow is an emerging theme. Since health implies balance, what is required depends on the realities of your lifestyle. Perhaps you need to play more, or maybe it is your work/effort/focus equation that is required. Is it a better diet or more exercise and stretching that is needed? Make your health and that of your lifestyle a higher priority.
