The Interior Health Authority reminds residents to take extra precautions against mosquito bites this summer. West Nile virus, a disease that is spread from infected birds to humans through mosquito bites, has been present in British Columbia since 2009. West Nile virus (WNv) was first detected in B.C. in the South Okanagan during the summer of 2009. To date, there have been three human cases of WNv acquired in B.C., and all have been in the Okanagan. Several WNv cases in IHA residents also occur due to travel to nearby provinces or states with higher levels of WNv mosquito activity. “If you have been bitten by a mosquito, you do not have to be tested for WNv,” says Jennifer Jeyes, IHA communicable disease specialist. “Most people who become infected with the virus will have no symptoms or ill effects at all. About 20 per cent of infected people may experience mild to severe flu-like symptoms and less than one per cent of people who are bitten by an infected mosquito will get severely ill. “The elderly and people with compromised immune systems are generally more at risk of developing a severe illness in response to WNv exposure.” If you have mild health symptoms that you think might be from the West Nile virus, you should get plenty of rest, drink fluids, and avoid alcohol, says Jeyes. If your symptoms persist and seem to be getting more severe, call your doctor, she adds. While the risk of becoming seriously ill from WNv infection is low, it is important to remember there are preventive steps everyone can take in order to reduce the risk of infection. The best protection against West Nile virus is to avoid mosquito bites and to reduce mosquito breeding areas.

National dealership award recognizes Meridian RV owner Carole Rooney Free Press
Meridian RV owner Tom Ramsay has been named Canadian RV Dealer of the Year. The Walt Paseska Memorial award is presented annually by RV Lifestyle Magazine, Vie en Plein Air and RV Lifestyle Dealer News. Tom says he was first awarded RV Dealer of British Columbia by Recreation Vehicle Dealers Association (RVDA) of B.C., and was “surprised and pleased” to be recognized again at the national level. The award recognizes his background as an energetic and enthusiastic proponent of the RV lifestyle, 45-year career in the sector and his contributions to the community, he explains. While the busy local location at 93 Mile has surpassed his expectations since it opened in 2007, he explains Meridian RV Manufacturing Ltd. was originally established as Meridian Mobile in Port Coquitlam 45 years ago (1967) by his father, Doug Ramsay Sr., his brother, Doug Jr., and himself. In its early days the family business operated out of the family barn to manufacture custom travel trailers, campers and chassismount coaches for various purposes, he notes. His mother also participated by sew-
ing the upholstery and curtains and doing the bookkeeping, Tom explains. Over the years, the market saw the business evolve into custom work trailers for mining and logging camps, medical units and even a mobile radio/ television station (the CKNW Crystal Palace, which debuted in 1981). When the demand for custom built units fluctuated, Meridian sold products from other manufacturers and concentrated on sales, parts and service. When Doug Jr. was injured in the 1970s, Tom set aside his initial plans to become a veterinarian and opted to help his family run the RV business, gradually taking over the helm. After he bought out the family business 20 years ago, Tom continued to run it with the support of his wife, Sherry, and his children, Tammy, Ben and Chris. Tom says he purchased, enlarged and See AWARD… page 6

For more than 30 years, millions of people have participated in the Terry Fox Run in their community and will continue to fight for the cause in the 32nd Annual Terry Fox Run on Sept. 16. Keeping with Terry’s wishes, the runs are non-competitive, have no entry fee and do not require a minimum pledge amount. Folks can register individually or as a group with their families, friends
and co-workers and Team-Up for Terry. Furthermore, the foundation would be delighted at the chance to honour Terry’s Team Members; those who have had or currently have cancer. For more information about the run in your community, registering a team or signing up as a Terry’s Team Member, visit The Terry Fox Foundation website at www. terryfox.org, or call 1-888-836-9786.

Terry Fox is a symbol of hope that touches the hearts of not only Canadians, but also people around the world. His desire and passion towards spreading awareness for the need to raise funds for cancer research has left an immeasurable impact on our lives and a legacy that will not be forgotten, says Donna White, provincial director of The Terry Fox Foundation BC and Yukon. Since Terry’s Marathon of Hope in 1980, The Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $600 million for cancer research and donates 84 cents of every dollar towards finding a cure, she adds. “The wonderful part about his legacy is that it’s not just about the type of cancer Terry had, or cancers affecting youth, or men, or women. The foundation funds research in to all kinds of cancer, believing as Terry did, that we need to conquer once and for all; for everybody.” The 32nd Annual Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research will be held in 100 Mile House on Sept. 16 and area residents can be a part of Terry’s dream. Said Terry Fox: “When I started this run, I said if we all gave one dollar, we’d have $22 million for cancer research, and I don’t care man, there’s no reason that isn’t possible. No reason!” Terry dedicated his heart, body and spirit towards his dream
bol of hope whose message transcends between generations and nationalities, leaving a lasting legacy that remains alive today, she adds.

Keep your cool this summer and save money This summer, have fun in the sun but keep your cool indoors. Here are some tips on how to be smart with your power and cut down on your electricity use and costs. * Lock out hot air during the day and open windows to let
Cariboo Idol spotlight Over the next few weeks the 2012 Cariboo Idol contestants will be spotlighted.
Mark Gilman Cariboo Idol contestant Mark Gilman, who resides in 150 Mile House, has been singing since his teens and has also written numerous songs over the years. What influences him is “the energy which is the universe that is a never ending song to communicate that energy to my fellow beings in the wonder of the great mystery of creation.” Gilman built the guitar he plays and also enjoys playing the harmonica, bass and slide-steel guitar. This is the fifth in a series of 10.
cooler air in during the evenings. * Using blinds and drapes can block up to 65 per cent of the heat that would otherwise come in through your windows. Angling horizontal blinds with the edge tilted upwards will block heat from entering while allowing light in. * A ceiling fan is a great energy-efficient alternative to an air conditioner. To use a fan more effectively, hang it at least 2.5 metres above the floor and ensure it is rotating counter-clockwise. The air-flow from this creates a wind-chill effect that makes you feel cooler. * Time the use of major appliances, such as ovens and washing machines, during cooler times of the day. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment – computers, stereos and televisions – and limit the use of most electronics to early mornings and eve-
nings when the air is cooler. * Take advantage of the warm, dry weather to hang your laundry to dry. Hanging clothes to dry instead of using a dryer is a great way to keep things cool and save money. If you have to use the dryer, throw in a dry towel to a wet load of laundry to cut down the drying time. * Eat cold food on a hot day to save the need for using the oven or stovetop. Or use the barbecue and prevent unnecessary heat in your home from the oven. * Keep cool this summer by taking shorter, cooler showers. You can save up to $15 a year per person by taking one minute off your usual showering time. For a family of four, that’s $60 of savings. * If you’re going out of town, remember that a full fridge is a happy fridge. Having an empty fridge requires more energy to cool the empty spaces. Try
filling old containers with water to improve your fridge’s efficiency. The same rule applies to your freezer. * If you’re going to be away, use a timer for interior and exterior lights so your lights turn on and off at a pre-determined time. Remember to unplug phone chargers and other appliances to diminish “phantom” load. (Electronics and other devices, like phone chargers, continue to draw electricity even if they’re not in use.) * Join Team Power Smart and get energy-saving advice, and take advantage of exclusive rebates and offers. Commit to cutting your electricity consumption by 10 per cent over the year, and you can earn a $75 reward. For details, visit www.bchydro. com For more tips on how to save energy and money throughout the year, visit www.bchydro.com/ powersmart.

Barkerville hosts pie-eating contest On July 21, Barkerville and the Goldfields Bakery play host to the Ninth Annual Williams Creek Sports Day and Pie Eating Contest, a summertime tradition that has local and regional visitors coming back to “the Creek year after year. Classic gold rush era sporting events and games begin at 1 p.m. with crowd
favourites, such as the children’s Broad Jump. The competition is all in fun, of course, and includes the Ladies’ Nail Driving competition for adults, the popu-

lar children’s Funny Face contest, and the Cracker Eating/ Whistle race. Later in the afternoon, adult ladies (both costumed and otherwise) can try their hands at the traditional Egg and Spoon race on an 1870s obstacle course, followed by the Sack Race, Egg Toss, and giant Tug o’ War. At the close of the games, Barkerville guests will be encouraged to gather at the Goldfields Bakery, where banana cream
pies await participants in the bakery’s annual pie-a-thon. With categories for hungry children and determined adults, the pie-eating contest will provide an amusing, if somewhat messy way to cap off the day‌ and there will be prizes galore for the epicurean victors. For more information on seasonal and special events occurring during Barkerville’s 150th anniversary season, visit www.barker ville.ca.
Every five minutes, a person in Canada receives a diagnosis of dementia, a disease that can be overwhelming and isolating, but doesn’t need to be. The Alzheimer Society of B.C. is in urgent need of volunteers in 100 Mile House who can help ensure families facing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are not alone in their journey. The need is for volunteers who can facilitate dementia support groups, which meet each month. The groups are based on the philosophy that people with similar issues are in a unique position to offer support to others on the same journey. For more information, contact Tara Hildebrand at 250-377-8200 or thildebrand@ alzheimerbc.org. Residents can get more information on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias at www.alzheimerbc.org.

Top 10 invasive plants in the South Cariboo This continuing series of articles highlights the most common invasive plants found in the South Cariboo, and how to identify them, with information and photos provided by the Cariboo Regional District. Invasive plant species have the potential to pose undesirable or detrimental impacts on humans, animals or ecosystems, and are often mistaken for wildflowers. These alien invaders spread rapidly in a number of ways: horticulture, through
gardening with ornamentals; seed mixtures for re-vegetation, birdseed or wildflower packages; animals; and humans, through recreation or vehicles.

AWARD… from page 2 renovated the 93 Mile location several years ago. Tammy worked with her dad in the business for years but then married and wanted to stay in the Cariboo, so Tom handed over the local dealership management to her. Tom dedicated the award to his mother and father, who have both passed away. “It was because of the guidance they instilled in me, my work ethics, the philosophy in life I grew up with that has resulted in my personal business success. But it’s also a sense of pride in the many accomplishments of the company and the staff, obviously.” He accepted the award on behalf of his family, especially his wife of 32 years, as Tom explains spousal support is critical to business success. “Without the involvement of my wife, Sherry, and my children, the award would not have been obtainable.”

DEET-free products are available, but may not provide as longlasting protection. • Avoid dark clothing, as it tends to attract mosquitoes. If you are in an area with a lot of mosquitoes, wear loose fitting, full-length pants and a long-sleeved shirt to keep mosquitoes from biting. Mosquitoes that can carry WNv are most active at dusk and at dawn. Avoid using perfumes, soaps, hair care products and lotions with floral fragrances. • It doesn’t take much time or water for mosquitoes to develop from eggs into adults. Anything that can hold water can be a mosquito breeding area. Remove potential breeding areas on your property empty saucers under flowerpots; change water in bird baths twice a week; unclog rain gutters; drain tarps, tires, and other debris where rain water may collect; and install a pump in ornamental ponds or stock them with fish. Stagnant backyard pools can be a big source of mosquitoes and should be
maintained regularly to prevent mosquito growth. B.C. conducts a surveillance program for West Nile virus, which includes testing of dead birds in the corvid family: crows, ravens, magpies and jays. These birds are
more likely than others to die from West Nile virus. The program also includes trapping and testing of mosquitoes from numerous sites in the province. Members of the public can report dead corvid birds (crows, ravens,
magpies and jays). For more information, visit the BC Centre for Disease Control Dead Bird Reporting page: www.bccdc. ca/dis-cond/az/_w/ We s t N i l e V i r u s / Surveillance/ WNvDeadBird Reporting.htm

SPCA earns top notch charity rating The BC SPCA is one of only six Canadian charities to earn an A+ rating in MoneySense magazine’s 2012 survey that rates 100 Canadian charities for overall efficiency, transparency and donor stewardship. The magazine created Canada’s first charity rating system to determine which charities score highest in categories, such as fundraising efficiency, governance and transparency, compensation and overall charity efficiency. With 76.1 per cent of all dona-
tions going towards its programs and services and a cost of $16.47 to raise $100, the BC SPCA earned the highest rating possible in the category of fundraising efficiency as well as A+ or A ratings in every other
category. Each year, the BC SPCA provides care and protection for more than 32,000 abused, neglected, injured and homeless animals through a wide range of services, including cruelty
investigations, emergency rescue and treatment, sheltering and adoption of homeless and abused animals, humane education, advocacy, farm animal welfare and spay/neuter programs.
