Councillor Thapar censured for third time AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter Stripped of his committees and having to seek council permission before representing the city, Coun. Sushil Thapar says he will continue to work for the taxpayers of Quesnel. Monday night council unanimously passed a motion to censure Thapar for a third time, while stripping him of committee appointments, removing him from

rotating acting mayor duties and requiring him to seek council permission prior to representing the city. “It’s unfortunate we had to take these measures,” Mayor Mary Sjostrom said. Council quoted a number of concerns for the restrictions, including respectful communication and how confidential information is released. In the June 29 issue of the Cariboo Observer, Thapar was quoted

calling his colleagues “freakin’ idiots” after hearing of the alleged “wrongful” dismissal of long-term city employee Meriel Wild. The termination could have huge financial implications for taxpayers. Thapar apologized to his colleagues for his remarks during the Monday meeting. However, he maintains the restrictions imposed upon him will not deter him from continuing to

work “on behalf of taxpayers.” Thapar also said the sanctions placed on him only served to “discredit” him as a person and as a councillor. “I’ve done nothing wrong,” he said. “I did not break my oath. I have an oath to taxpayers. I will not back down.” Thapar has been censured twice before. The first instance it was alleged he was disrespectful to city staff,

a claim he denies. The second censure was due to an alleged breach of confidentiality. Another claim he adamantly denies. Sjostrom says the city and council is moving on,

regardless of Thapar. “Nobody is hiding anything here,” she said. “We are in compliance. We’re done.” Council has requested an in-camera (private) meeting with Thapar to discuss his future role with the city and council. “Any open, public meeting I will attend,” he said, adding he questions the authority of council to impose the restrictions. “I was elected by the public,” he said. “Not these people.”

Lion’s Club spearhead housing project In the spring, the Quesnel Lions Club sought the communities input regarding potential projects which the club could undertake. We did this by asking area residents to fill out a survey which asked what direction they thought the club should head, with regards to a major community project. With over 200 surveys in hand, the club deliberated on the wishes of the community. The majority of respondents indicated that a “Housing” project was what was needed in Quesnel and, more specifically, a “Seniors” housing project. In May, the club announced that indeed we would pursue the goal of building a seniors housing project and to that end we have been busy laying the ground work to achieve that goal. Since May, a newly created Lions Housing committee has been analyzing different types of seniors housing options. We have had many resources to draw upon to help us narrow our focus. Other Lion’s Clubs, community groups and local committees have all provided exceptional feedback on what sort of seniors housing project we might embark on. Important factors such as client affordability, possible facility care options and overall project size and design must all be considered. The Quesnel Lions Housing

Committee will also be conducting visitations to seniors’ housing projects locally, and to other regions, to see first hand what has been done and what works. By the fall, we will have narrowed our focus as to which type of seniors’ housing project we will move forward with, as well, we hope to have a comprehensive business plan in the works. In tandem with this process we are diligently following up with potential property donors as no project can get off the ground without property to build on. If any member of the community would like to discuss the prospect of donating property to our project we would love to sit down and discuss the opportunity. We know there are like-minded individuals out there who also see the need for affordable, safe and available seniors housing in Quesnel. Our door at the Lion’s Club is always open and we welcome your feedback and conversation on this very important project. You can reach the club on Facebook (Quesnel Lion’s Club), or by e-mail, quesnellions@shaw. ca, or by phone, 250-747-3758. As chair of the Lion’s Housing Committee, I would also like to hear from you. I can be reached by e-mail mitchellsvik@telus.net or phone 250-983-6784. –Submitted by Mitch Vik

More West Quesnel dewatering projects underway Another component of Phase 1 of the West Quesnel Land Stability dewatering program will get underway this week. Nine horizontal drain sites that will consist of about 70 horizontal drains will be installed across the bottom of the West Quesnel Land Stability study area (along Lewis Drive and near Avery Street). The work is scheduled to take about 14 weeks to complete. The horizontal drains are long pieces of pipe (with a target of 125 metres or longer) that are drilled into the side of the slope. Groundwater makes its way into the pipe and flows out into a collection system. As these drains are emptied using gravity, ongoing operational costs are minimal. The horizontal drains are part of a larger dewatering program designed to help reduce land movement in the West Quesnel Land Stability study area. In May, 14 vertical pumping wells were drilled at a number of different sites

along Dixon Street, near Stork and Crane Avenues, and in a wooded area to the west of Abbott Drive near Dawson Street. A new storm water drainage system was also installed on Stork Avenue and Hawk Street. Several supporting jobs are also set to begin shortly, including: • Abbott Drive, Stork Avenue and Hawk Street paving is expected to be complete in the next few weeks. • Lewis Pond dewatering begins this week. • Fourteen monitoring wells (used to measure the effectiveness of the dewatering program) will be installed at various sites beginning July 23. • Drain lines to connect wells and horizontal drains to the City’s storm drainage system and electrical conduit to provide power to all sites will be installed next month. localized traffic delays; motorists are asked to respect signage and flag people’s instructions. The City thanks residents for their patience as these ongoing important investments are made in the West Quesnel Land Stability study area. The WQLS dewatering program is a $4.7 million project. More than $3.1 million was provided by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia, through the Building Canada Fund-Communities Component program, part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan for this project. The City of Quesnel contributed more than $1.5 million to pay for the fullscale dewatering program. In addition to this, the City has invested more than $2.1 million on the West Quesnel Land Stability Program since 2000.

Fund application The city will apply to the new Community Infrastructure Improvement

Fund (CIIF) in Western Canada. Western Economic Diversification Canada announced July 5 that it will invest more than $46 million over the next two years. The CIIF supports reinvestment in existing community infrastructure for projects valued up to $250,000 and funds 50 per cent of the cost (the city would need to invest up to $125,000). To qualify the project needs to be completed by March 2014. Council opted to apply for two projects. The first is for a trail rehabilitation project for the current trail system including: asphalt; signage (both kiosks and information boards); upgrades to the artifacts on the trail; investigation of future trail expansion to the Two and Three Mile Flat areas. It is likely that gas tax funds could be used for the city’s portion of matching funds. Council also opted to submit a second application for the North Cariboo MultiCentre.

will generate approximately $3,000 per year for the city with an annual Consumer Price Index increase built into the agreement.

Resolution

Lease Council authorized the city entering a five-year lease with ABC Allen Business Communications Ltd. for 111.48 m2 of land located at Sugarloaf Park. ABC currently uses 55.74 m2 for its telecommunications equipment and has been doing so since 2001. The new lease

Council will submit a resolution to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities concerning the proposed privatization of the BC Liquor Distribution Branch. Darryl Walker, president of the BCGEU wrote a letter to Council asking for their support and for a moratorium on any decisions until a formal means for public discussion is established.

Listening to You, Speaking out for the Cariboo

Cancer doctor suspended De LYNDA PILLON Prince George Free Press An internal investigation by the BC Cancer Agency ensuring all of the approximately 200 patients under the care of Dr. Suresh Katakkar received and will continue to receive the best treatment possible will continue though Katakkar resigned from his position on June 12. Katakkar was suspended with pay in May pending a review of his patient files after concerns were raised. “Multiple practice concerns were brought to our attention,” said Dr. Charles Blanke, vice president of systematic care for the BCCA. Though sketchy on details from the BCCA’s point of view, due to concerns regarding patient confidentiality as well as what is appropriate to be released regarding an employee, Katakkar explained his side of the story in a letter he sent out to patients following his resignation, which was recently printed in the Prince George Citizen. The letter tells the story of a very ill patient, one who was not responding well to various types of chemotherapy. Katakkar says he

recalled a study he’d done and presented at the New York Academy of Sciences, discussing a patientspecific vaccine which both the patient and her husband consented to her taking. At first the patient responded. The letter states, “My manager wanted me to be transparent and inform the BCCA of this. But I felt I had to gather all my proof and scientific support before informing the BCCA. As all of you know how busy I had been it was taking time to prepare the statement. In the meantime patient had clinically good response but her white blood cell count went down and she passed away with infection in the blood stream. The low white cell count was due to chemotherapy, not due to the vaccine. Prior to her death there was accumulation of the fluid and the fluid did slow the cancer cells. “My manager then reported me to BCCA.” The letter goes on to say that getting permission for using the vaccine on his patient would have taken too long. However, according to Blanke, there are specific protocols in place for doctors so they can handle any

particular case. The mainstream course generally taken when it comes to cancer treatment medication usually involves the life support budget. Blanke said when there’s evidence of a new cancer treatment, and it looks promising, a rigourous evaluation of the product is made, then a recommendation for funding is made. A submission for a new budget is sent to the minister, and if funding is received, then an implementation program is put in province wide and the BCCA supports the use of the drug and monitors the usage to make sure it’s being properly administered. “But we recognize this is not always nimble enough for every one,” Blanke said. The second is patient specific. If, in a particular case, a treatment that is unusual, but has been used on a patient in a similar state as the one in the request and has proven successful, then the oncologist can ask permission to try it out. “The majority of

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

During the Special Committee on Timber Supply hearings in Vancouver there was a very telling exchange between Liberal MLA Eric Foster (Vernon-Monashee) and the representative for the Association of Professional Biology that likely reflects the frustration other MLAs on the Committee have about the process they’ve been engaged in over the past two months.

these requests are answered within four hours, but almost always within a day or two,” Blanke said. Finally, sometimes a doctor asks if a highly experimental treatment can be used.

This request is met with very rigourous testing. Likely the drug in question has never been given to a human before. Even so, Blanke said it usually takes about a week to get permission.

Like many other organizations (including the Professional Foresters, the major forest companies, the Council of Forest Industries, and major environmental organizations), the Professional Biologists told the Special Committee that BC’s land use plans should not be re-opened in order to meet timber shortfalls in the near term. Before asking a question of the professional biologist, MLA Foster quipped that it would have “saved a lot of time and energy” if the many organizations that felt this way had simply written a single letter to government informing them of this opinion a lot sooner. In short, the Committee was told time and again that logging in reserves is not an option; it’s clear from the Committee’s hearings there is no interest in creating another potential war in the woods by opening up BC’s land use plans. Industry also argued such a move would put BC’s reputation as a sustainable forest manager at risk and threaten their third party certification. Another clear message to the Committee was that British Columbians do not have confidence in the government’s forest inventory system. Despite assertions by Ministry staff to Committee members that government has sufficient data to make “strategic decisions,” every presenter who spoke to this issue indicated a significant lack of confidence in the government’s data — a strong grassroots echo of what BC’s Auditor General told government earlier this year. Bottom line, the answer to the main question the Committee asked is a resounding “no”: they can’t advise government to log in reserves to get more timber in the short term. In the absence of obtaining the social license to advise government how to increase midterm timber supply by encroaching on set aside areas, I hope the Committee will now choose to advise government to do what it should have been doing all along: immediately begin to work with affected communities to plan for the transition to a smaller traditional forest sector and the job losses that may come as a result. The Committee’s final report will be presented on August 15.

COMMUNITY

New Focus celebrates 25 New Focus Society is celebrating 25 years of service to the community of Quesnel. Started in 1987 as Start Economic & Employment Development Society, the society changed its name to New Focus in 1993. New Focus’ vision is a community where families and individuals of all ages and ethnic origins feel valued and included and where those in need are able to access friendly, supportive and free community services aimed at improving the quality of life. Our mission is to find and support unmet needs within the community for persons of all ages and ethnic origins. Through March 2007, the mainstay contracts for the society came from Human Resource & Development Canada for employment services. The society has held a provincial contract for the Child Care Resource & Referral program since 1990 and has also held the federal/provincial contract for the English as a Second Language Settlement Assistance Program, which has helped immigrants adjust to life in Canada since 2007. In addition, New Focus Society offers self-paced training in bookkeeping and Microsoft Office programs. The Child Care Resource & Referral program exists to help establish quality child care and offers supports to child care providers and day care centers through workshops and a

resource library, referrals to parents looking for child care and a community lending library of toys and equipment for young children. Also offered are free parent/child playgroups through the fall, winter and spring months. Child Care subsidy forms and faxing are available in the office. The CCRR has two full-time and one part-time staff, who are supported by the executive director and a board of directors. The CCRR also partners with other organizations in the community to provide activities and trainings which are relevant to diverse groups. Some of these have included busing upwards of 100 children from their daycare centers to literacy events in different locations, bringing in professionals to present on a variety of topics relevant to children and supporting other agencies’ programs through the donation of space or staff time. The CCRR is always present at the Billy Barker Kids’ Day in the Park and the Early Learning Expo, as well as other special events in the community relevant to children. The English as a Second Language Settlement Assistance Program (ESLSAP) is run by the executive director, with the assistance of volunteer tutors who work one-to-one with immigrants. This program offers language and settlement assistance and is open to adult immigrants.

OPINIONS Officer duty

T

he news that the federal Conservative government’s omnibus budget bill included a clause that will allow American police officers to cross the international border and make arrests should be deeply disturbing to all Canadians. The Integrated Cross Border Law Enforcement Operations Act changes the law that covers maritime operations, allowing U.S. officers to continue their pursuit in some cases while on Canadian soil. Previously, U.S. police could only enter Canadian waters while chasing suspect boats. Now, if they are in hot pursuit and the suspects reach land on the Canadian side of the border, they are able to continue their pursuit and make an arrest. It may seem like a small thing, particularly if the bad guys get what’s legally coming to them, but it raises some very serious questions. How far inland, for instance, can the pursuit go? Are armed U.S. police officers operating on Canadian soil going to become the new normal? We certainly don’t think it should be. The RCMP has a good track record in dealing with drug traffickers and, realistically, they’re as close as your phone. What’s wrong with having a detachment of mounties on hand to tie up the drug runner’s boat when it pulls to shore? True, the U.S. agents would be required to be under the command of a Canadian officer, but what would happen if a U.S. officer found it necessary to fire his or her gun? What if someone was killed? The biggest concern of course has to be the loss of Canadian sovereignty, particularly in light of the very real possibility of mission creep. What will be the next step? How far will it go? As well, one has to wonder why this particular measure was buried as a minor subsection in an enormous federal budget bill. While there could be some financial implications, surely this is the sort of measure that requires full, stand alone debate as a separate bill in the House of Commons. –Black Press

Removing doubt, moving on up A

fter a challenging 2011, the beginning of this year was exciting for me with what felt like a brand new chapter in my life. For the first time I rented some office space, painted the heck out of it, and made it my own little escape from the world where I could work inspired, and in peace, without the distractions of working from home. Four short months later I was told by my landlord that he had sold his business which was located under mine, and that the new owner planned on gutting the building, destroying the oasis I had spent hundreds of hours creating. The news came as a shock and I felt crushed. I hadn’t even finished creating it yet; nor had I hosted the open house I was planning. All I could think about was the time and money I had invested, and how all of that would be flushed down the toilet.

On A Brighter Note My negative thinking lasted as long as I allowed it to, and then I switched the channel. “I’m supposed to be somewhere else,” I told my husband in an effort to convince myself that the eviction was a good thing. “I could get a bigger place to share with other film makers and photographers now,” I continued. “Maybe something closer to home.” So that’s exactly what I found and I felt excited again. And then a weird thing happened: the deal fell through with the new owner, I was asked to stay

weight had been lifted from my shoulders. The self doubt about my decision to leave was gone, replaced with an ever growing to-do list in my mind of how to set up my new digs and the opportunities that lay ahead. Moving has never been my idea of a good time and whenever someone tells me they’re in the midst of it or about to do it, I feel for them. Yet moving, like any big change, can often lead to a fresh new beginning once the initial pain-in-the-neck portion of the transition is over. Always in love with starting a brand new chapter, I’m ready to embrace any discomfort as I set up Brighter Note Studios, excited to see where life takes me next. where I was, and I started second guessing my next move. Should I stay or should I go? It was easy when I had no choice, but now that I did, I wasn’t sure. I craved a crystal ball to show me the future so I could make the right decision. Without access to one, I made a decision based on my own gut reaction – something that has both served me well and led me astray. Onwards and upwards was the direction I decided to go, but as optimistic as I was about starting another new chapter, I dreaded going back to the old place to pack up. I procrastinated the deed for as long as I could and then last Saturday afternoon faced the task head on. With the help of my husband we quickly packed and moved the entire contents of the studio before the weekend was over. Starting the week in my new place felt like a big

Taxpayers take notice of your elected officials Editor: I think it is important for the taxpayers of Quesnel to know just how fiscally irresponsible most of the elected officials really are. As you will know from the article on June 29, I was fired following a complaint against the city manager. My stress leave was only the second time in nine plus years that I was absent on medical leave. It is also important to know that I was not the only one experiencing problems, but I was the one who was prepared to make a formal complaint.

Letters to the Editor

Mayor and council were aware last June that staff were not happy and, last December because of their failure to act, we lost a much loved long term (23 year) staff member due to the difficult work conditions we were experiencing. Although skills can be replaced, the organization cannot afford to lose its knowledge base in this way. As there was no process to deal with my complaint, the executive committee (Mayor Sjostrom, Coun. Coleman, Coun. Roodenburg) created one, and all parties agreed to this.

All meetings were supposed to be without prejudice. In spite of the agreement, the executive committee refused to follow their own process through to the final step – hiring an outside consultant to advise on a resolution – claiming that it would be a waste of taxpayer money. Nevertheless, my complaint was upheld, but then I was promptly fired without notice. The city has admitted it is without just cause. Thus, it is difficult to comprehend the executive committee’s stated concerns regarding

“I hope through this letter that taxpayers will become more engaged, take more of an interest in how their hard earned tax dollars are being wasted and hold their elected officials accountable.” taxpayers’ money when, in practically the same breath, it fired me without just cause and thereby exposed itself to my

claim for damages for wrongful dismissal. As well as severance, there are also hidden costs to the organization. I was not able to leave the department in good order because I was fired without notice. My termination has left the city with the loss of my institutional knowledge and this is already creating further liabilities for the city. I am very appreciative of the support I have received from both colleagues and taxpayers. I am pretty certain that there will be further losses to the city as more staff leave when they are able

to do so, due in part to their disillusionment with Council over this issue. The organization will suffer from the loss of this knowledge and experience, all because council has failed to put the taxpayers and the organization they are supposed to represent above their own personal agendas. I hope through this letter that taxpayers will become more engaged, take more of an interest in how their hard earned tax dollars are being wasted and hold their elected officials accountable. community aware of what’s happening in aviation, but more importantly, airshows are important for tourism, they do so much for a community,” he said. “Airshows are different, they draw people. Everyone looks up when they see airplane.” However, Singleton said its becoming very difficult to hold airshows, especially since 9/11. “The military want more security to participate and insurance costs have skyrocketed, overall costs are high,” he said. “And you’re never sure about the weather, its very risky. “Hats off to the people in Quesnel for holding an airshow.” For every airshow, Singleton said there are basic ingredients including excellent safety measures, but also the sequencing of acts must be both entertaining and safe (each pilot and plane must safely take off and land) as well as a balance of acts like good aerobatics, a couple of antique aircraft, jets always attract people and even ultralights are part of most airshows. “You try to cover as many bases as you can,” he said. Quesnel Skyfest, Aug. 4 – 5 is still in need of volunteers and anyone wishing to become involved can contact Barb Van Halderen, 250-249-5151 or visit the website skyfest2012.com to sign up.

“I remember an early Victoria Day show in Alberta, I set my radio to get up early and the first words were ‘snow should end by noon.’

n looking back, Bob Singleton’s love of airshows began about 1964. Now in his fifth decade of airshow narrating, Singleton will be announcing Quesnel’s Skyfest airshow Aug. 4 – 5. His announcing career was kick-started when, as a local radio personality, he’d broadcast live from the Abbotsford Airshow. Also working at the same radio station, Toby Trowbridge was the airshow announcer and in 1969 asked Singleton to be his assistant. “Back then you needed to study, there’s a language of areobatics called Aresti, a diagramatical description pilots use in the cockpit,” Singleton said. “I learned it because it was used by the pilots but now, not so much.” He added announcers still need to be able to identify both military and civilian aircraft. His first solo announcing was in 1972 in Penticton. “It was scary doing the first one on my own,” he said. However, a few years later he was the primary announcer for the Abbotsford Airshow. In 1986 he was chosen to narrate the aviation events at EXPO 86. Singleton has entertained and informed millions of

aviation fans at hundreds of airshows from coast-tocoast in Canada and the United States. Unlike the United States that has quite a few professional announcers, Singleton said Canada has maybe five he’d call professional. “Canada has a relatively short airshow season,” he said. “I remember an early Victoria Day show in Alberta, I set my radio to get up early and the first words were ‘snow should end by noon.’ “The snow did end by noon, it warmed up and by the next day we were in short sleeve shirts.” He added most shows aren’t scheduled before the first part of June and not much past the first of October. Despite having retired from both broadcasting and extensive travelling to announce airshows in 1999, Singleton still enjoys keeping his hand in the business. He especially enjoys smaller community airshows. “Small airshows are important to keep people in the

Eco sprouts at Timberpark

EcoSprouts from Baker Creek Enhancement Society is up and running in the Timberpark! On Thursday, parents and tots enjoyed getting cool by doing activities around the pond. There was mud painting, ice cube painting, and creating forest boats to float. The biggest hit of the day was searching for spider webs in the forest using a spray bottle. EcoSprouts runs every Thursday from 10am – 11:30am starting from the Nature Center. We do different activities every week and they can be modified for any age, so bring the whole family! Getting out in nature helps to keep kids healthy and stimulated, not to mention it’s a whole lot of fun. Come explore the trails and wetlands with your kids. Check our facebook page (Baker Creek Enhancement Society) to see what we will be doing next week or contact ecosproutsbces@ gmail.com

One-man wonder returns

Were you lucky enough to catch Lucas Myers’, The Cromoli Brothers, at The Sunset Theatre in Wells last summer? Whether you saw it or not, we are all in for a surefire treat when the Nelson based actor and theatre creator, returns to Wells this weekend with his latest offering, DECK: How I Instigated Then Overcame An Existential Crisis Through Home Improvement. Seriously, how can you ignore a title like that? DECK examines the fine line between perfectionism and obsession, chaos and freedom and why a piece of 2x6 lumber isn’t really two inches by six inches. Not even close. DECK stars Cliv, a meticulous single parent of two who has been forced to reassess his future after taking major losses in the recent recession.

He embraces a new start as a small town, eco-conscious, back-to-thelander. His attempts at self-sufficiency are hijacked by a bad house buy and he is forced to try his hand at home improvement. DECK is a darkly hilarious take on the modern milieu of a small town, semiurban environment. The show runs this Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21, 8 p.m. at The Sunset Theatre, located at 2357 Pooley Street in Wells. Tickets are $12 cash only at the door and the show is not for children. The artist recommendation is age 14+. To reserve your tickets today call 250-994-3400 today, or visit, www.sunsettheatre.com.

B-Ville celebrates sports The opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games take place in London, England, July 27. But if a trip to “Old London Towne” isn’t in the cards for travellers to and from British Columbia this year, then Barkerville Historic Town is ready and willing to serve as the next best thing. This Saturday, Barkerville and the Goldfields Bakery play host to the ninth annual Williams Creek Sports Day and Pie Eating Contest, a summertime tradition that has local and regional visitors coming back to “the Creek” year after year. Classic gold rush era sporting events and games begin at 1 p.m. with crowd favourites like the children’s Broad Jump. The competition is all in fun, of course, and includes a Ladies’ Nail Driving competition for adults, a popular children’s Funny Face contest, and a Cracker Eating/ Whistle race. Later in the afternoon adult ladies (both costumed and otherwise) can try their hands at a traditional Egg and Spoon race on an 1870s obstacle course, followed by a Sack Race, Egg Toss, and giant Tug o’ War. At the close of the games, Barkerville guests will be encouraged to gather at the Goldfields Bakery, where banana cream pies await participants in the bakery’s annual pie-a-thon. With categories for hungry children and determined adults, the pie-eating contest will provide an amusing, if somewhat messy way to cap off the day… and there will be prizes galore for the epicurean victors. Fairlith Harvey, Barkerville’s Special Events Coordinator, is confident that visitors to the park on Sports Day won’t

be disappointed. “Barkerville provides guests with a unique way to experience a by-gone era, highlighting the fun and vivacity of a community that sprang up under immense pressure and industrial hardship 150 years ago,” Harvey said. “People who come to Barkerville really connect with that, as evidenced by our many guests from all over the world who attend Sports Day. This year won’t be an exception.” For more information on seasonal and special events occurring during Barkerville’s 150th anniversary season, visit www. barkerville.ca.

Swimming in Alphabet soup: Waveriders hit ‘AA’ and ‘AAA’

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Three swimmers from the Waveriders staged an assault down south as they swam for provincial honours in Victoria and Richmond. Two of the three swimmers, Natasha Hanson and Olivia Therrien, were in Victoria for the AA provincials and Garnet Currie was in the AAA provincials, the highest level of provincial competition, in Richmond. Jeritt Brink, the head coach of the Waveriders, was happy with how his swimmers performed. "We were inside the top ten every single night," Brink said. "The kids were in the finals, the alternate, or just off alternate for every race." Therrien was the most successful swimmer in her finals, with a bronze in 100 metre freestyle in the 'AA' championship. The race, with its high calibre of competitor and build-up, left Therrien a bit nervous for her races, but it wasn't enough to slow her down. "There was lots of hype about the race and everyone was so close. It was anyone's race," Therrien said. Therrien hit heartbreak in the 50 freestyle, finishing just out of the top three in fourth. The finishing times, though, tell a more exciting tale. "There were four of us within .15 seconds, so it was close," Therrien said. Despite her bronze, Therrien was a little disappointed with her results. Going into the finals, she had been higher in the standings. "One of the races I was seeded first – so that kinda sucked," she said.

Brink, however, was more than happy with Therrien's season. Going on fifteen, Therrien is of the age where many of the girls drop out, said Brink, so he's happy she's stuck it out and put her years of experience to use. "She's the most technical swimmer. She's awesome to watch swim," he said. After the nerves and the competition of the provincials, Therrien has nothing more on her mind than a summer off, when she doesn't have to get up and swim three days a week. Despite missing medals, Hanson was about as Hanson recorded her best numbers ever at the 'AA' provincials, breaking her personal best in every category in which she swam, except one category in which she made finals which she considers as good as a personal best she said. That includes shaving an amazing four seconds off her 200 metre backstroke. "I was super happy with my races," Hanson said. And all this came within her first season of competitive swimming with the club. "She's accelerated faster than I've seen with other swimmers," Brink said. Within two meets, Hanson made her jump from zero to 'AA' competition level. And with her personal bests being recorded on her last meet, she still has a lot of growing to do. Hanson hopes to be making an encore next year at the provincials, but maybe this time claiming victory against the top girls as well as herself. Currie found himself the lone Waverider in Richmond, competing against swimmers that had already hit their growth spurt and were bigger than him. "He's such a little guy. When you look at the kids in

first, second and third, they're man-children already," Brink said Brink was impressed with Currie’s performance at the provincials and for the whole season. Despite finishing out of the medals, Currie was in the finals for five out of seven of the categories he was in, an alternate for the two he missed and within a stroke of medalling in the 100 metre breaststroke. It was a quick change in technique in mid-competition, a feat which impressed his coach, which had him only behind three swimmers in the 100 m breaststroke finals. Most importantly, Currie said he was happy with his results and he had the smile to prove it. According to Brink, all Currie has to do is grow, a feat at which twelve year-olds are particularly skilled at, and he will see victory come to him. "He won't be sitting at third or second anymore, he'll be first," he said. With a whole season of growing to do before he hits the top of his age range for nationals, Currie has his eyes on making that nation-wide meet, a feat which will require him to win at provincials. Brink is happy with the past season, the sponsor Integris Credit Union and everyone who has helped out as well as the heights the swimmers have reached in such a young club. More than the personal best or the medals, Brink is most happy with the progress the athletes have made with their training and refining their techniques. With that solid foundation, Brink knows the future is friendly. "This whole year coming up, is going to be better."

SPORTS Rodeo

Quesnel barrel riders dominate

Landen Scott takes a shot in box lacrosse, his usual sport. Jonas Gagnon photo

Playing the field their stick handling on driveways in front of their homes. With the melding of teams in an area comes the crashing of worlds. Just like the Quesnel kids, who usually play box lacrosse, boys from all over north-western B.C. that have been the rivals of local teams have tried out and made the team. This means, not only are the boys on the team dealing with a new sport, they're dealing with team members they have bodychecked, slashed and had benchto-bench 'conversations' with. This means some rivalries need to be bedded down, if only for a nap, for the weekend. For their part, the boys are doing their best, but they wonder about the players from other teams and how long that veneer will last when under tension. Though the games promise some difficulties, the boys are looking forward to it. It is, after all, the B.C. Summer Games to which they’re going.

JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Field lacrosse is a different game from box lacrosse. With a bigger field and less physical play, the game has a different pace than its quicker, more physical cousin. Despite the difference, a troop of box lacrosse players from Quesnel will be heading down to Surrey to cross over into field lacrosse this week. J.T. Moore, Landen Scott, Dylan Cathcart, Chase Ballendine, Royce Maxwell and T.J Reistad are in Surrey training in this new, to them, version of their sport. "It's a whole different thing," Cathcart said of the sport. For the boys there will be two practices to get them used to this new way of playing before they’re in it for real. To make up for that dearth of practicing, the boys practiced at home whenever they could, setting up targets or goal to practice their shots and practicing

Quesnel girls have been dominating in junior barrel racing this year and the Anahim rodeo the first weekend of the month was no exception. Savanah Watson took first in junior barrel racing, followed by Taylor Cherry and Sharla Hancock in second and third respectively. All three girls hail from Quesnel. Ladies barrel racing was more of a mixed bag. Cathy Bueckert, hailing from Vanderhoof, took first, followed by Keely Durrell, of Riske Creek, in second and Prince George's Melanie Beeton in third. Team roping was nearly as Quesneldominated, with five of six members of the top three teams Gold Pan residents. Todd Lloyd and John Hancock took first in the event. Ty Lytton, the lone non-Quesneller out of 108 Mile, took second, followed by Coby Mero and Ed Marshall in third. In number eight team roping Quesnellers once again took the lead, with Jody Coe and John Hancock taking first. The sibling duo of B.J. and Cash Isnardy, out of Cache Creek took second in the event. B.J. showed up again in third, but this time with Archie Williams, also from Cache Creek. Wendell Williams out of Williams Lake took first in junior steer riding, followed by Clay Waterhouse from Quesnel in second. In breakaway roping, Prince George's Clint Cripps took first. Keely Durrell, out of Riske Creek, took second, followed by Kyle Bell, out of Houston, in third. In the junior cat-

egory Kyle Bell, out of Houston, took first, followed by B.J. Isnardy. Cash Kerner, out of Pritchard, did it twice in bareback. He took first on the back of Crazy X and then skipped a spot and took third on Misery's back. Quesnel's own Steve Hohmann took second riding Ford Tough. Keegan Smith, from 150 Mile, took first in the tie-down roping competition. Ty Tytton, from 108 Mile followed in second, with Cash Isnardy trailing in third. In saddle bronc

Kamloops' Ryland DeRose took top honours on Red Eye. On the same horse, Cliff Schuck, hailing out of Tatla Lake, took second. Kylan Eek rounded out the top three riding on Double Duty. Wade McNolty, out of 150 Mile House, had the highest score in steer wrestling. Luke Simonin, from Naramata, followed in second. That's it for Anahim Lake rodeo fans. Keep your eyes out for Valemont Rodeo results and enjoy the Quesnel rodeo this weekend.

Rio Dinu smiling as she starts the cycling portion of the triathlon.

Trying the Prince George Tri JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter A couple new triathletes from the new, local triathlete club wet their feet last weekend in this triumvirate of sports. Rio Dinu and Bryce Wilson participated in their first ever sprint triathlon in Prince George. David Osmond, one of the more seasoned members with two triathlons under his belt, was in Prince George to take part as well. The triathlon was blessed with perfect weather, said Osmond: not too cold to ride in wet clothes, not too hot to run in and the lack of wind left the water placid. For the rookies taking part in, and finish-

ing, the Prince George Triathlon was cause for great joy. “Rio had such a smile on her face the whole way through. They were both ecstatic after finishing it,” coach Stacy Osmond said of the two neophytes. For Stacy, though, the joy of the event came in watching the athletes she trained enjoy their first experience in a sport she loves. But, while both Dinu and Wilson were in the race to experience the pain and pleasure of going the distance, David Osmond was in it to win it. Due to a course change from last year the race was a bit more challenging

Stacy said. Because of that extra challenge, David Osmond finished the race one minute behind last year’s time. Despite the 60 second drop, David still finished third overall and second in his division. Finishing only two steps down from Malcolm Stinson, who is bound for worlds next month in New Zealand, Osmond spent most of his time chasing Craig Summerland, a feat in which he was nearly victorious, near stepping on the heels of Summerland for the last kilometre of the race, finishing only 30 seconds behind at one hour, twenty-one minutes and fifty-one seconds.

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 A vacation could be in the works in the next few weeks, Aries. Because tasks can seem to sneak up on you, get the planning started early and work up an itinerary. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Take some time to look through your checkbook or online bills history, Taurus. You may have a few unexpected expenses on the horizon and you'll need to some extra cash. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Loss is not something easily overcome, Gemini. If you've lost someone you love due to relocation or illness, surround yourself with a good support team until you rebound a bit. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Never say never, Cancer, because you may look foolish when you eventually do the things you said you never would. Instead, be open to all possibilities and opportunities. However, Gemini, you're up for the challenge. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 For the most part you're insistent on doing things yourself and taking the difficult route, Virgo. Try to let go a little this week and let someone else handle things for a change. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you may have your heart set on making a change, but you have not quite narrowed down what that change will be. Sit down and work on some ideas this week. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 The only way you will know if your ideas have merit is to stick you neck out and take a chance once in a while, Scorpio. You just may be surprised at the feedback. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 There's not much else you can do with regard to a tenuous relationship, Sagittarius. So it's best if you just cut your losses and move on. You'll make new friends easily. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Although you want to be everything to everyone, there's only so much of you to go around, Capricorn. Don't spread yourself too thinly because it can take quite a while to recuperate after. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you are ready to dabble in something that you and you alone enjoy. Figure out what you need to get started and begin building around your specific interest or hobby.
