FSA results show Rupert students behind BC By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The provincial government released the results of the 2012 Foundation Skills Assessment for grades four and seven, and the results show that Prince Rupert students are behind others in BC when it comes to reading, writing and numeracy. In grade four classes in the Prince Rupert School District, 66 per cent of students were meeting or exceeding expectations in reading compared to 70 per cent across BC, 59 per cent were meeting or exceeding expectations in writing compared to 72 per cent across BC and 57 per cent were meeting or exceeding expectations for numeracy compared to 68 per cent in BC.
STARTING @ OAC
4.9%
And while the district was behind the provincial numbers overall, the stats show Aboriginal students in grade four in the district are on par with their provincial counterparts. In reading 53 per cent met or exceeded expectations both in the district and the province, in writing the numbers were 52 per cent in the district and 53 per cent in the province, and in numeracy Prince Rupert Aboriginal students were higher than the provincial numbers at 53 per cent compared to 49 per cent. When the comparison is made to grade seven students, those in the Prince Rupert School District are also behind the provincial numbers than in grade four. In reading 48 per cent of students met or exceeded expectations locally compared to 64 per cent across the province, in
writing 57 per cent were meeting or exceeding expectations compared to 71 per cent across BC, and in numeracy just 41 per cent of students were meeting or exceeding expectations compared to 60 per cent across BC. While grade four Aboriginal students were on par with others in the province, that is not the case for the grade seven students. In reading, writing and numeracy the number of students meeting or exceeding expectations are 37 per cent, 44 per cent and 27 per cent compared to BC numbers of 45 per cent, 53 per cent and 36 per cent, respectively. In the Haida Gwaii School District, student sin grade four are just below the provincial numbers in reading (69 per cent meeting or exceeding expectations compared to 70 per cent),

Students in grade seven are below the provincial numbers in all three categories at 58 per cent for reading, 65 per cent for writing and 49 per cent for numeracy. While the FSA has come under fire due to its use by the Fraser Institute to rank schools, Education Minister George Abbott defends the test and making the results public. “FSA results are an important tool in measuring student achievement provincewide. Shell Canada Ltd, Korea Gas Company (KOGAS), Mitsubishi Corporation and PetroChina Company Limited are proposing to build LNG Canada – an LNG export terminal near Kitimat, British Columbia. Kitimat is wellsuited for an LNG terminal as it is on Canada’s deepest inland tidewater port and is easily accessible via the Douglas Channel – B.C.’s largest coastal fjord.
Value for British Columbia, Energy for the World
Commitment to responsible development
Working with First Nations and the Community
The LNG Canada project would include the design, construction and operation of a gas liquefaction plant, and facilities for the storage and export of liquefied natural gas, including marine off-loading facilities and shipping.
The proposed LNG Canada project brings Shell, KOGAS, Mitsubishi and PetroChina’s extensive development experience, technical depth, financial strength and access to markets required to be the leading LNG developer in Canada. LNG Canada’s vision is to work collaboratively with First Nations, the local community, non-governmental organizations, and local, provincial and national levels of government to achieve the proposed project, and deliver a project that offers a new source of competitively priced LNG to global markets, while providing benefits to Canada, British Columbia and its coastal region.
The decision to move the project forward into development would be taken after conducting the necessary engineering, environmental, First Nations and stakeholder engagement work, with start up around the end of the decade, pending regulatory approvals and investment decisions.
LNG Canada’s vision is to deliver a project that offers a new source of competitively priced LNG to global markets, while providing benefits to Canada, British Columbia and its coastal communities. A world-class energy development project The LNG Canada project would initially consist of two LNG processing units referred to as “trains”, each with the capacity to produce six million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG, with an option to expand the project in the future. LNG Canada would be one of the most significant energy development projects in the history of British Columbia.
A regulated industry with an exceptional safety record For the past 50 years, LNG carriers have been safely transporting liquefied natural gas across oceans to markets where it is then regasified. In more than 50 years of commercial LNG use, no major accidents or safety or security problems have occurred, either in port or at sea.
LNG Canada Competitive Advantages
LNG is natural gas in its liquid, rather than gaseous form. To export natural gas where pipelines don’t exist, natural gas is cooled to -162 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, gas turns into a liquid, and its volume is reduced by 600 times. In its liquid form, natural gas can be safely and efficiently shipped by LNG carrier to global markets. Natural gas is odourless, colourless, non-toxic and non-corrosive. In its liquid form, natural gas is stored at standard pressures, which means it is nonexplosive. In the case of a leak, LNG evaporates when mixed with air. If the concentration of LNG in the air is below five percent or above 15 percent, it will not ignite.
To learn more about LNG Canada Over the coming months, LNG Canada will begin consultation in communities and will be providing further information about the project and an opportunity for interested parties to ask questions and raise concerns. A Project Description will also be provided to regulatory authorities.
Located on a deep-water port, ice-free year-round

Pilots recognized for efforts in crash By Anna Killen THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Victoria issued the award to White River Helicopters, singling out Kief Khanlarian and Andy Ramsay, who first found the wreckage. The JRCC’s award program acknowledges the contribution of volunteers and the general public who go above and beyond to assist in an emergency air or marine situation. The awards, given out a couple of times a year, are issued based on advice from the coordinators who run the cases. “The gentlemen of White River Helicopters certainly went above and beyond on the 1st of June,” said Major James Pierotti, officer in charge of the JRCC. “While all we can provide is a piece of paper, we hope they find pride in the sincere words from all of our coordinators here who greatly appreciated their assistance during the prosecution of this tragic accident.” The cause of the
crash is still undetermined. Three men, 44-year-old Peter Bryant of Terrace, 48-yearold Blake Erickson of Sicamous, BC and 44-year-old Arnaud Jolibois of Banff, Alberta, were killed June 1 when their helicopter, belonging to Bailey Helicopters, went down while on a training flight. The weather was poor the day in the location of the crash. “We just did what we thought needed to be done,” said Khanlarian, admitting it feels strange to get an award for someone’s misfortune. “But nobody’s adverse to being told they’ve done a good job.” Khanlarian, originally from a coastal town in Devon, England, moved to Terrace in February last year. This is his first season with White River Helicopters. He served with the British Army for 24 years, where he trained to be a pilot and gained a number of first-responder skills. It was Khanlarian’s day off when the crash took place. He was at home gardening when he got the call from Ram-
say, who was on duty. The emergency locator transmitter of the helicopter belonging Bailey had gone off and the company called White River. Based on the coordinates from the transmitter, White River’s headquarters was five minutes by air from the immediate vicinity of Sleeping Beauty Mountain. The two flew over the area in question and saw nothing, so they extended their search. After 45 minutes, the two pilots found the wreckage. “Finding a crash is infrequent,” said Khanlarian. “Transmitters going off is usually not a crash. Usually someone’s knocked a button or a wire is loose. You don’t expect to find a crash, you expect to find someone sitting there, embarrassed.” Ramsay dropped Khanlarian off to investigate, who then walked 10 to 15 minutes up the mountain. He approached the site and began speaking to the passengers as per CPR training. But “there was noth-

He then found a suitable base camp and prepared the area for the RCMP, armed forces search and rescue personnel, local search and rescue volunteers and an avalanche technician who would later arrive. Meanwhile, the investigation by the feder-

Top Chrysler tech in BC in Rupert
Coming home…
By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The top Chrysler technician in the province can be found right here in Prince Rupert. Steve Eso of Rainbow Chrysler was one of 10 technicians from around the province in the 2012 Tech Challenge last month, and outperformed the others involved to be recognized as the top technician in BC. “I feel pretty proud. The contest is designed to reward people who follow and complete Chrysler training, so it is nice to be able to benchmark myself against other veteran technicians from around the province and it’s nice to bring some prestige to the dealership,” said Eso, who started by washing cars at Rainbow Chrysler about 10 years ago. “It’s nice for the dealership to get rewarded for the investment they make in technical training.
SHAUN THOMAS / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
Steve Eso of Rainbow Chrysler was named the top Chrysler Technician in BC. It’s not cheap to fly someone down for training, the nearest place is Chilliwack, and it can be for only a day or two. It’s not cheap, but it is the reality of working on modern cars.”

Fire ban precaution ignored by campers TERRACE - Fire wardens extinguished four abandoned campfires during routine patrols in the days immediately following the northwest fire ban. The ban, which was issued by the Northwest Fire District on July 13 and by the City of Terrace July 12, does not prohibit campfires, but both announcements gave strong recommendations to be very cautious. For example, people are asked not to light in windy conditions, to keep fires smaller than half a square metre and to make sure fires are cold before leaving the area. Given the Fire Safety Rating, and the potential for forest fires, these unattended campfires are concerning, according to the Northwest Fire District’s press release. This year all of the 19 forest fires in the northwest district have been human-caused. The prohibition is in response to the hot and dry weather that is expected to continue, even though there is no lightening in the forecast for the near future. This time last year only 17 fires had occurred and 70 per cent or 12 of those were human-caused. But those fires burned up 11,000 hectares, mostly due to the Tisigar Lake fire last June. This year only 15 hectares have gone up in flames. The latest fire in this
district started and was extinguished last week just outside Burns Lake. The fire centre received calls from two people late Thursday night and the small fire was considered completely out by Friday morning. “Reporting is key to our success, said Stephanie Little, assistant information officer at the Northwest Fire Centre. Little added that this fire, which was started by a farmer’s baler, could have grown considerably given the dry surroundings had it not been handled early on. What is banned is
burning waste, slash or other material, burning stubble or grass, and the use of fireworks or fire barrels. Along with campfires, gas or propane cooking stoves and briquettes were left out of the ban. Other precautions recommended regarding campfires are having eight litres of water or a hand tool available to extinguish an out-of-
control campfire and of course to never leave a fire unattended. Earlier in the season, B.C. firefighters were being deployed to other parts of the country that were in need of assistance. Now all parts of the country are in the same situation: hot and dry. No provinces have requested additional firefighters, including B.C. Last year, more than $3 million was spent
fighting forest fires in the Northwest Fire Centre. This year that number is approximately $180,000 to date. To report a wildfire or unattended campfire, call *5555 on your cellphone or 1800-663-5555 toll-free. Minister sees debris from tsunami By Martina Perry THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
HAIDA GWAII - British Columbian Minister of Environment Terry Lake and his team spent three days in Haida Gwaii early last weekend on a “fact-finding” trip to see first hand the debris that’s arriving on B.C.’s west coast from the 2011 tsunami that devastated parts of Japan. The earthquake that hit Japan on March 11, 2011 was the world’s fifth-largest earthquake since 1900, with a magnitude of 9.0. After the quake, a tsunami ensued and washed approximately five million tonnes of debris into the sea. Around 1.5 million tonnes of debris is said to be drifting towards North America’s coast, with debris expected to arrive within the next few years. Radiation experts say that the likeliness of any of the debris generated from the tsunami holding harmful levels of radiation from the Fukushima nuclear emergency is very low. Lake said his trip to Haida Gwaii was to help him understand the level of the problem at this stage and to help inform him on how many resources and how much funding will be needed to help resolve the prob-
lem. “We want to design a program that is scalable because even though we can see the material coming in now, there’s a lot of debate on how much volume will actually make it to our beaches. We want to have a program that allows us to scale it up if necessary and have contingency plans in place if the volume becomes greater than expected,” Lake told The Prince Rupert Northern View in an exclusive interview. “We haven’t identified specific dollars yet, but we’re not going to be able to do this with no cost… We haven’t fully developed the plan.” Lake and his group examined beaches on Haida Gwaii, and he said the most common items they came across were objects with high flotation value such as Styrofoam, plastic floats, etc. Some more unusual items they came across included mini fridges, which Lake said were lined with Styrofoam. During his time in Haida Gwaii, Lake also met with the vice-president of the Haida Nation, local government leaders and band councilors. “We had an open discussion… I think their
biggest concern was the capacity they have for collection and disposal because their landfill space is quite limited,” said Lake, mentioning that the government might have to look at off-island solutions. “I got the impression [Minister Terry Lake] did understand our situation, even though he didn’t have answers at that moment,” said Andrew Merilees, who is the Mayor of the Village of Masset. “[Lake] was very aware of the issues Haida Gwaii is facing, with our isolated coast-line, our small transfer station,
our lack of recycling facilities on the island and of course the logistics like transport any materials off-island.” Lake expects that there would be a plan in place by the fall to address the issue. Merilees said that although he would have liked to see a more concrete plan in place before the fall, he understands that there are unknowns to the extent of the issue. “The majority of the materials are not expected to wash up until after the fall, so I think there is time. I don’t want to be overly critical,” he commented.

Keep cool during summer’s heat By Staff Writer THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
TERRACE - Keep your cool and save money using BC Hydro’s energy-savings tips This summer, have fun in the sun but keep your cool indoors. Here are some tips on how to be smart with your power and cut down on your electricity use and costs. Cool air in, hot air out - Lock out hot air during the day and open windows to let cooler air in during the evenings. Blinds up, temperature down – Using blinds and drapes can block up to 65% of the heat that would otherwise come in through your windows. Angling horizontal blinds with the edge tilted upwards will block heat from entering while allowing light in. Spin that fan – A ceiling fan is a great energyefficient alternative to an air conditioner. To use a fan more effectively, hang it at least 2.5 meters above the floor and ensure it is rotating counter-clockwise. The air-flow from this creates a wind-chill effect that makes you feel cooler. A cool home – Time the use of major appliances like ovens and washing machines during cooler times of the day. Turn off all unnecessary electrical equipment – computers, stereos and televisions – and limit the use of most electronics to early mornings and evenings when the air is cooler. Make laundry a breeze – Take advantage of the warm dry weather to hang your laundry to dry. Hanging clothes to dry instead of using a dryer is a great way to keep things cool and save money. If you have to use the dryer, throw in a dry towel to a wet load of laundry to cut down the drying time. Food for thought – Eat cold food on a hot day to save the need for using the oven or stovetop. Or use the barbecue and prevent unnecessary heat in your home from the oven. Keep your cool – Keep cool this summer by taking shorter, cooler showers. You can save up to $15 a year per person by taking one minute off your usual showering time. For a family of four, that’s $60 of
savings! If you’re going out of town, remember that a full fridge is a happy fridge. Having an empty fridge requires more energy to cool the empty spaces.

Film maker missing in Hazeltons 4th, 2012. RCMP confirmed the vehicle had been parked at the entrance of the Whiskey Creek Trail since Thursday, July 5th, 2012. Andrew Sill had told family and friends that he would be exploring for 4 to 5 days, but police then learned that Sill was not a seasoned outdoors man and therefore Search and Rescue were contacted. From last week into early this week, Search and Rescue Teams from all over the province have been contacted. A command post was established at the parking lot and base of Whiskey Creek Trail. Search teams have consisted of approximately 25 volunteers who have covered the area on ground and by air. Police are also working with a local resident of Kitwanga who knows

HAZELTON - RCMP and Search and Rescue were continuing their search earlier in the week for a missing Ohio man, 26 year old Warren Andrew Sill ,who was in the Gull Creek area filming a documentary on the Kermode bears (also known as Spirit Bears) known to roam in that area. On July 10th, 2012 New Hazelton RCMP received a complaint of an abandoned vehicle parked at Gull Creek. RCMP identified the owner of the blue/grey Pontiac Torrent SUV Ohio plate EGW1699 as a vehicle belonging to Sill. Police spoke to the family who stated their son, Andrew, was in the area to make a documentary on the Spirit Bear and they had last spoken to him on July
Search and Rescue volunteers, along with RCMP police dog services, ATV support, a local helicopter and a number of volunteers have been involved in searching throughout the vast forested area which is being described as dense and very challenging. “The fact that this young man is not an avid hiker and he is not familiar with this terrain, is very concerning,” said Smith. Warren Andrew Soll is described as: 5’10” 180 lbs. Medium build short dirty blond hair Clean straight teeth If anyone has information in regards to Warren Andrew Sill, they are asked to contact the New Hazelton RCMP Detachment at (250) 842-5244 or call 911 for immediate assistance.
WARREN SILL the area very well. “Today police are using a number of resources including river boats as they are now focusing on the creek beds,” stated Cst. Lesley Smith, North District Media Liaison, on July 17. “Forest fire fighters have been flown into the higher regions and will be clear cutting a second base so the helicopter can land and bring further tools and supplies.”

HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

Rupert city payroll well above Terrace’s By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The City of Prince Rupert’s Statement of Financial Information shows that almost three times as many city employees make over $75,000 than in neighbouring Terrace, despite only having 1,000 more residents. The 2011 Statement of Financial Information lists 45 people who work for the City and make more than $75,000, while the City of Terrace lists 17 people who make more than $75,000. Of those 45 people, 12 city employees are listed as making more than $100,000, with City Manager Gord Howie and Chief Finan-
cial Officer Dan Rodin being the highest paid employees at $154,008 and $136,627 respectively. The City Administrator hired to replace long-time administrator Ron Poole in Terrace was to be paid $140,000, while the Director of Finance for the City of Terrace made $103,605. The payroll for employees making over $75,000 in Prince Rupert is more than double that of Terrace, sitting at $4.18 million compared to $1.62 million. One notable difference between the two communities is the fire department. While 14 firefighters in Prince Rupert are among those making more than
$75,000 per year, with two long-time firefighters and Fire Chief Dave McKenzie making over $100,000, the City of Terrace fire department has few full-time staff and relies on a volunteer force of around 25 people for the remainder of the task. In fact, of the 17 people making over $75,000 in Terrace, seven of those are firefighters. When it comes to overall payroll, the City of Prince Rupert is significantly higher than that of Terrace. The City of Terrace payroll sits at $6.68 million while the City of Prince Rupert payroll, excluding elected officials, sits at $12.29 million. The payroll for those not mak-
ing more than $75,000 is $8.12 million in Prince Rupert and $5.06 million in Terrace. Expe-nses incurred by staff making over $75,000 was also more than triple that of Terrace, sitting at $192,427 compared to $59,259. The highest expenses for Prince Rupert were those of City Manager Gord Howie, who claimed $25,508. As for the elected leader of the City, Prince Rupert mayor Jack Mussallem was paid $39,956 while mayor Dave Pernarowski was paid
$28,374. The four returning council members – Anna Ashley, Gina Garon, Joy Thorkelson and Nelson Kinney – each received $12,399 and each had over $4,000 in expenses. Expenses for the two councils were almost even with Terrace council having expenses of $34,833 and Prince Rupert council having expenses of $35,450. The population of Prince Rupert is 12,508 according to the 2011 census, while the population of Terrace is 11,486. All of the above numbers include benefits.

Port donates $20,500 to re-do 9th green By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - Golfers in Prince Rupert will notice a significant change in the course in the years ahead thanks to a major donation from the Prince Rupert Port Authority. On Thursday Prince Rupert Port Authority CEO Don Krusel presented the club with a cheque for $20,500 to help cover the estimated $36,500 cost of redoing the green on the 9th hole. The club applied to the port’s Community Investment Fund for the money and identified the green as a priority due to the steep slope that has developed in the 30 years since the hole was built. “I am sure this will be appreciated by a lot of golfers who view this green as a challenge, to say the least. If you start at the top, you could end up the bottom or off the green pretty quickly with the slope,” said Prince Rupert Golf Club president Terry Sawka. “Generations of golfers will ap-
preciate the transformation of this virtually unplayable green, where they will again enjoy the challenge of making par, birdie or better for years to come,” added the club’s Outside Committee chair Richard Wright. Work on replacing the hole is scheduled to start near the beginning of October, after the current season comes to an end. The hope is to have it ready and playable by the time the Ladies Jubilee takes place in early June. The port authority, Krusel said, recognizes the role that the club plays in Prince Rupert’s quality of life. “This golf course is figuratively the heart of the community, and is literally in the heart of the community. I know the importance of the club to residents and to young people in Prince Rupert,” he said, alluding to the after-school program and youth lessons offered by the club. “We understand how crucial it is to preserve and improve recreational areas like the Prince Rupert Centennial Golf Course.”

25 years at the BC Seniors’ Games By Cameron Orr THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
CAMERON ORR / THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
Dorothy Cheyne, 84, is heading to her 25th B.C. Seniors’ Games, held in Burnaby at the end of August. She is competing in floor curling.
KITIMAT - Kitimat’s Dorothy Cheyne has spent 25 years proving that being a senior doesn’t mean being old. Cheyne is marking 2012 as her 25th year as a Zone 10 athlete for the B.C. Seniors’ Games Society, which formed in 1987. Zone 10 represents Kitimat, Terrace, Prince Rupert, Haida Gwaii and the Nass Valley. Cheyne attended the first BC Seniors Games competition in 1988, the first time the event was held. She was 59 at the time. Cheyne has a scrapbook
filled to the brim with photos and news clippings from 25 years of competitions. Many of the athletes within the pages are now no longer with us. In fact she said she is the only Kitimat athlete still left alive from the 1988 Games. Other Zone 10 athletes marking their 25th year in the society are Terrace’s Betty Nordstrom and Bob Goodvin, and Prince Rupert’s Mary Arneson. “I was on the first executive,” said Cheyne, who served as secretary for a year. “[We] got the thing going anyway.” Cheyne, now 84, started off as a tennis athlete — of which she taught at the Riverlodge —
and has since competed in 10pin bowling and, this year, floor curling. “As you get older you do things that are not quite so hard,” she said. Even as she takes less intensive sports each year, she still remains committed to winning. “I’m competitive, I want to win,” she said, adding, “I’ve got oodles of medals.” In 1988 she won a silver medal with her tennis partner who was from Terrace, and she said she has received a medal for nearly every year she’s gone off to compete. All year long she has been practicing floor curling in anticipation of this August’s Games
in Burnaby and will keep on practicing until the end of July when they’ll take a break. It is anticipated that 3,200 people will attend the Games this year, which run August 21 to 25. It is widely considered by organizers that the BC Seniors’ Games is the best alternative health care program in the province. More information about the Games can be found online at www.bcseniorsgames.org. As for Cheyne, she has certainly enjoyed her time and said she has plans to continue competing for as long as she’s able. “It’s fun,” she said. “You can have fun and still win.”
BC Games the first step for many London-bound athletes By Contributed THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
SURREY - When the Olympic and Paralympic Games begin in London, there are a number of Canadian athletes who will remember their first multi-sport experience at a BC Games. Twenty-four athletes on the Canadian Olympic team started their journey to London with a trip to the BC Games, including 2008 Olympic gold medallist Carol Huynh (Wrestling), and recent Giro d’Italia winner Ryder Hesjedal (Cycling). As part of the athlete development pathway, the BC Games are a first multi-sport experience for young athletes that lead towards
provincial and national teams and ultimately the Olympic or Paralympic Games. The BC Games are part of a strong provincial sport system that provides an outstanding training environment and support services for high-performance athletes. Forty per cent of the Canadian Olympic team live or train in B.C. Shot-putter Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops is one of Canada’s great medal hopes at the 2012 Olympic Games. He is a shining example of a B.C. athlete who has developed to international success with support through all the stages of the athlete pathway. Involved at a young age with the
Kamloops Track and Field Club, he represented the Thompson-Okanagan Zone at the 1995 and 1996 BC Summer Games. Success as part of Team BC at the 2001 Canada Games was next before winning gold for Canada at the 2007 and 2010 Pan American Games. All eyes are on this BC Games alumnus to better his fourth place finish from the 2008 Olympic Games. Swimmer Brent Hayden of Mission is another medal contender in London. Brent competed at the 1998 BC Summer Games. “The BC Summer Games was the point in my career when I real-
ized that I had the potential to go further,” he said. “It was soon after that that I decided to switch from being a summer swimmer to training all year round. It is clear that I wouldn’t have noticed my own potential without the BC Summer Games.” The full Paralympic team will be named later this summer, but former BC Games athletes Bo Hedges of Fort St. John (Wheelchair Basketball) and Adam Rahier of Powell River (Swimming) will be part of the team. Over 2,300 athletes between the ages of 10 and 18 will be at the 2012 BC Summer Games, which kick off just one week prior to the start of the Olympics.
It is an inspiring experience that will ignite the dreams of many young athletes to pursue their sport to the highest level. A veteran of the Canadian Women’s Soccer team is Karina LeBlanc from Maple Ridge. “It was an amazing experience because I did dream of one day being at the Olympic Games and it was the closest thing for me to it, so it made me want to be there that much more,” she said. Watch for the next generation of Olympians and Paralympians at the 2012 BC Summer Games, July 19-22. See the complete list of BC Games alumni heading to London at www.bcgames.org
