The Williams Lake Fire Department responds to a small grass fire near a hydro pole on Thursday morning at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Broadway Avenue North. BC Hydro says the fire was started by the hydro service line burning up. Monica Lamb-Yorski photo
A dozen new fires in the Cariboo Monica Lamb-Yorski Tribune Staff Writer Cariboo Fire Centre personnel have responded to more than a dozen new fires over the past few days. Many of the fires have remained small; however, there were two that were growing yesterday. By Thursday morning, the largest fire currently burning grew to an estimated 216 hectares and is located approximately 15 kilometres southeast of Chimney Lake. “The winds we had yesterday (Wednesday) did challenge the air-
tankers. The fire was highly active. Crew and equipment remained on site last night and worked to build machine guards,” fire information officer Jenny Fremlin says. Yesterday the fire was 20 per cent machine guarded and 10 per cent contained. Six pieces of heavy equipment and 35 personnel were on site. No structures were immediately threatened by this fire; however, the fire crossed Enterprise Road and the Cariboo Fire Centre is asking the public not to use the road at this time. Another fire that is estimated to
be about three hectares in size is being noted because of its proximity to and visibility from Williams Lake, Fremlin says. The fire is located about 15 kilometres west of Williams Lake on the west side of the Fraser River in the upper Meldrum Area. Airtankers dropped retardant on the fire Wednesday. Eight personnel and one piece of heavy equipment were onsite, and some remained there overnight. As of Thursday morning the fire was 100 per cent machine guarded and 80 per cent contained. No structures are immediately threat-

ened. The Bond Lake fire, reported on June 18, was put out by evening. “Crews hit that one hard and fast and wrapped it up quickly,” Fremlin says. Further resources have come to the Cariboo from other areas to assist with fires currently burning in the region. The Cariboo Fire Centre thanks the public for continuing to report wildfires. Dental chairs donated for Sosua clinic Gaeil Farrar Tribune Staff Writer Another container is in the process of being filled for Williams Lake’s sister city Sosua, Dominican Republic. Several more pieces of equipment needed to set up a dental clinic in Sosua were donated last week by the Cariboo Dental Clinic. These items include two dental chairs valued at about $10,000 each (used) and dental lights with a total value of about $5,000, (used) plus a few dentist stools. This dental equipment joins a dental X-ray unit donated earlier by Dr. Rudy Wassenaar for the clinic. The equipment in both cases was being replaced with more modern technology but still in good shape for a country where many people don’t have access to dental care. Technicians from Sinclair Dental, a company that both Cariboo Dental Clinic and Wassenaar use, have offered to go

to Sosua to help install the equipment. Both Wassenaar and the Cariboo Dental Clinic’s Dr. Perry Vitoratos also hope to go to Sosua to do volunteer dentistry in the future. The container will be shipped to Sosua later this year and hopefully arrive in December in time for Christmas, says Glen Lahey, who founded KidsExplore with his wife Debbie and heads up Williams Lake’s sister city project with So-
sua. The container also includes donations of beds and other older hospital equipment from Deni House. This latest container is the third container of help that Williams Lake and area residents have filled and sent to Sosua with everything from household goods to clothing, blankets, crutches, sewing machines, medical equipment and supplies. People can continue to drop off donations at
Chuck’s Auto on Mackenzie Avenue, but at the request of the DR government clothing will not be accepted, Lahey says. The following is a list of badly needed new or slightly used items to help fill the container. Sporting equipment, baseball, basketball and soccer uniforms and caps, baseballs, bats gloves shoes, basketballs and shoes, soccer balls, basketball hoops and nets, and kids’ soccer
nets, all types of camping gear to be used for emergencies during the yearly floods. Tents in good condition, stoves, cooking utensils, axes, tarps, folding chairs, and small charcoal and propane barbecues, school materials including notebooks, construction paper, children’s scissors, folders, pencils, pens, erasers, batteries, molding clay, legos, tape, umbrellas and children’s rain ponchos, backpacks, calculators,

One of the biggest motivators to getting serious about heart health is having a heart attack. Health educators are continuously trying to get people to be proactive and make lifestyle changes before a heart problem occurs and perhaps even prevent it from occurring. Seven out of ten Canadians polled said that getting a heart disease diagnosis was a “wake up call” to take better care of themselves. Wouldn’t it be great to do that before that diagnosis? Part of being proactive is to know your numbers: blood pressure, cholesterol levels, your ideal weight and what you can do to change these numbers. Our pharmacists are a great resource on matters pertaining to your better health. Use their expertise to help you be proactive in your life before a life-changing diagnosis comes your way.

Life lessons from a garden T
he man who I had the good fortune to call my father in law was born and raised in Earnscliffe, P.E.I. before settling in northern B.C. to raise his family. He often regaled me with tales of the island and once he talked about the lupine and how misunderstood it was. Early settlers spotted fields of breathtaking blooms and reasoned that any soil that could support something so beautiful must be fertile soil indeed. When the soil turned out to be poor they turned on the lupine, blaming it for robbing their land of nutrients. Ah, but looks can be deceiving! As a member of the legume family with its astonishing ability to snatch nitrogen out of the air and tuck it into the soil, the lupine was, in fact, improving the land. The reason it grew so well on poor soil was simply because it could. Today wild lupines are being looked at in PEI for their potential as medicine, biodiesel and even as an organic biopesticide used in commercial
SLICE OF LIFE SHANNON McKINNON
crop rotation. This may have possibilities for the home gardener as well. None of this means everyone in P.E.I. likes their lupines. It might surprise you to know the wild lupine is not native to P.E.I. and is, in fact, on the province’s list of invasive species. Even hybrids such as the Russell series are banned in P.E.I. because of their tendency to revert back to their wild roots over time. Every year, while tourist shops hawk pottery, T-shirts featuring the lupine and even bags of lupine seeds, the island deploys mowers to wage war on the plant, razing the flowers to the ground before they can go to seed. Isn’t that just the way of things? Life is nothing
but layers. Just when you form an opinion about something (or someone) you find out one more piece of information that changes your perception entirely. If you’re a tourist in P.E.I. lupines are camera-grabbing spectacular. If you’re a farmer in P.E.I. lupines are a terrible weed competing for crop space (even if they do add free nitrogen to the soil). If you’re a bee — or a slug or an aphid — they’re lunch. Who is right? Who is wrong? The thistle is as synonymous with Scotland as the lupine is with P.E.I. The reason the thistle is celebrated as Scotland’s official flower despite its weedy tendencies is … what else? A matter of perspective! One legend has it that a band of Scottish warriors were slumbering through the night when a group of invading Vikings closed in on them. In order to approach the sleeping Scotsmen as quietly as possible the Vikings removed their shoes. Scottish blood would surely have been shed had not one of the Vikings stepped on a thistle. He
let out an involuntary cry of pain and awoke the Scots in time to save the day, or the night, as it were. Now consider the same story from the Viking perspective — particularly the hapless boy whose sorry naked foot found the thistle! I am not sure where the story leaves me. Not only did I marry a Scottish descendant, I am one myself — but one that is a product of a Viking and Scottish union; hence the red hair. Perhaps my thistle-laced heritage might help explain the stupidest thing I have ever done as a gardener. Well over a decade ago I came upon a patch of Canada thistle. It was decked out in gorgeous purple blooms and absolutely covered with bees and butterflies. I noticed one of the blooms was going to seed. I was in the midst of starting a native wildflower garden and impulsively cupped my hand around the spent bloom and carried a tiny fistful of thistledown back to my garden. I told myself I would only allow a few to blossom for the beauty

In the Book of Job God asks, “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone —“ Job 38:4-6 New International Version (NIV) We humans are an inquisitive species. We are curious about everything and anything. We have sent probes to see what is on Mars. We sent robotic submarines to the depths of the sea just to see what we can find. We explore every place we go, whether it is a new town, mountain top, ocean bottom or even subatomic particles. In recent science news, after years and years of research and study, an announcement released stated that two research facilities may have found the “god particle. This particle is supposed to be one of the foundation particles of matter so says a very simplified version of the data (mine). It is the particle that may give the “Big Bang’ theory more credence. Research into the origin of the universe has been ongoing since the beginning of man. Since the

BY Captain Randy first bite of fruit we have looked for something besides God as the explanation for our beginnings. No matter how much we try to prove there is no creator and the more science discovers the more convinced I am that God exists. We may never discover, exactly what happened at the beginning of the universe but we can discover more than just a particle of God. Jeremiah 29:13 New International Version (NIV). 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your
heart. 14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD. For some people it take years to discover God, for others as little as a few moments. We all start with the question Does God exist?. Seeking God starts with an acknowledgment that there is a god, or as some put it “a higher power. To truly find an answer we must tune our heart into really wanting to know. A foolish heart attitude is to challenge God, “If God exists may He strike me with lightning! I am glad we do not hear of many lightning strikes when there are no storms! Our heart‘s condition should be such as to accept the truth no matter what our preconceived idea may be. God says, “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Isaiah 55:6 for soon it may be too late and He will no longer hear. No one I know was there when the foundations were laid or the cornerstone placed. We can have the foundations and the cornerstone established in our lives through Jesus Christ. Do not wait for the day scientists or anyone else discovers the truth, for only you can find it for yourself.

Transition town film Monday
A 60th anniversary open house will be held at the Seniors’ Activity Centre Monday, July 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. for Orist and Elsie Sharun.
60th anniversary open house The year was 1957(8) — a long time ago anyway. Orist and Elsie Sharun arrived in Williams Lake with a small troop of boys to make residence and belong to a community. It worked! They are still here today and preparing to celebrate 60 years of marriage! Yes, 60 years. So come one, come all to listen to the stories, to tell your stories, to make up some stories and to take these memories with you at the end of the day. Yes, this celebra-
tion and fun time will be held at the Seniors Centre (not the youth centre); these two have earned their place at the Seniors’ Activity Centre at 176 North Fourth Ave. If you do not know where it is, now is the time to find out as you will need to be there Monday, July 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Optional is one of the following: a good story; a good song; a good dance; or a donation to the food bank. Come early as seating space may be limited.
The Williams Lake Transition Town, Council of Canadians, and Potato House will present In Transition 2.0, a transition town film, and guest speaker Kim Slater on Monday, July 23. In Transition 2.0 charts the evolution of the transition town movement from its humble origins in Kinsale, Ireland, to an exciting international move-
ment aimed at building resilient communities. Slater will talk about the need for “a new energy vision for Canada.” Everyone is welcome to attend and be a part of the discussion. The film will be shown at the Central Cariboo Arts Center (old fire hall) at 6 p.m., with Slater to present at 7 p.m. Treats and refreshments will be included.
It was too late Continued from A5 There’s an old story about a man who spreads some false malicious gossip about a neighbour. Filled with regret he visits the wise woman of the village and asks how to make things right. She tells him to find a handful of thistledown and release it to the wind. He returns to the wise woman and says, “I have done what you asked. Now what?” “Now,” the woman sadly tells him, “You must go back and retrieve every seed.” Just like gossip regret,
as soon as I released the thistledown I realized I had made a horrible mistake. But it was too late. Ten years later, despite never once allowing a single thistle to get more than a couple inches high, let alone form a blossom, I am still pulling thistles from my former wildflower patch. They are a perennial — and prickly — reminder to think before I act. Shannon McKinnon is a humour columnist from Northern BC. You can catch up on past columns by visiting www.shannonmckinnon.com.

Hitting the information highway B
y the time you read this I should be in Vanderhoof, the geographical centre of B.C., to visit relatives. Born in the Okanagan, raised in the Peace country and working for 20 years in Metro Vancouver, I’ve driven from one end of the province to the other more times than I can count. A similar trip last year began just as a huge mudslide was cleared near Chilliwack. Other drives have featured mid-summer hail piled 10 centimetres deep on the Coquihalla, a near miss between two moose in the Pine Pass, plus the usual blizzards and hundreds of traffic jams for construction, accidents and growing urban volume delays. This time I’ve got a new tool on board, the mobile version of DriveBC.ca on my BlackBerry. Launched two years, ago, the mobile site has taken off with the surging popularity of smartphones. In the past year, DriveBC’s online traffic averaged 1.2 million visits a month, about half to the five-yearold desktop site and half from mobile users. It’s by far the most popular B.C. government website. I asked DriveBC technical leader Nainesh Agarwal for these stats, and he said even he was surprised by the surge in mobile traffic in recent months. But trying out the mobile site, it’s easy to see the appeal.
B.C. VIEWS TOM FLETCHER
With a few clicks, the phone displays incident reports and web camera images for my chosen route. Webcams have been added steadily all over the province, and now watch 18 key locations on Vancouver Island, 93 in the Lower Mainland, 73 in the Southern Interior, 35 in the North and 13 at Canada-U.S. border crossings. At a glance, you can check anything from the traffic at the Lions Gate Bridge to the lineup for the Skidegate ferry on Haida Gwaii. Most pictures update every two minutes, offering a real-time look at traffic, weather and road conditions. A recent addition is “replay the day,” which shows the last 24 hours of pictures in a few seconds. Another new feature is an e-mail alert that can be customized. You can subscribe to a particular region or highway and receive notices as soon as they are posted to the DriveBC network. And of course there is
an @drivebc Twitter feed, where between 6:30 a.m. and midnight, staff update conditions and respond to inquiries. (Major events are automatically tweeted overnight.) Verified reports are fed from highways staff and contractors all over the province and co-ordinated through the provincial highways condition centre in the Lower Mainland. It’s become a primary source of
information for radio and TV traffic and news reporters around B.C. The mobile service now has an option for drivers to report new problems they encounter. After determining your smartphone’s location, the site displays the name and phone number of the local maintenance contractor who can take the report. For those who haven’t joined the smartphone era, there is an old-fashioned op-
tion. Dialing 5-1-1 anywhere in the province gives access to a toll-free line that connects to recorded DriveBC messages. Agarwal said use of that service has been declining as phones with web access become more popular. The 5-1-1 service also requires you to use the keypad to select your route from a numerical list, so drivers would have to pull over rather than breach the new restrictions
on using handheld devices while driving. The 5-1-1 system still gets surges of heavy use during major events like the recent flooding. The plan is to upgrade the system to allow voice recognition, so drivers can use headsets to get updates on the move. Bella Coola music festival this weekend The 13th annual Discovery Coast Music Festival happening this weekend in Bella Coola is a family-friendly, multicultural event featuring award-winning performers from across the country and around the region. Start tapping your feet at a free, noon-hour, outdoor concert on Friday with the Woodshed Orchestra and Digawolf, then dance that evening to another freebie at the Valley Inn Pub with Ivan Coyote and Del Barber Band. On Saturday morning, savour a free breakfast from 10 to 11 a.m. on the festival site before the music begins with the festival’s biggest entertainment lineup ever — Treehouse TV’s Bobs & LoLo, rising pop stars Carmen & Camille, plus hilarious comedy, African gospel, Middle Eastern electronic rock, blues, reggae funk, storytelling, acoustic guitar, children’s entertainers and more. Some of the entertainment profiles from the
Carmen & Camille have roots in Bella Coola and will be returning for the festival this weekend. program are as follows. • Daniel Lapp has been an innovator, mentor and staple of the west coast music scene for over 20 years. Since learning his first tunes from his farming/fiddling grandpa, his fiddle playing has garnered him praise from critics around the world. Daniel has appeared on various prestigious world stages including the 2010 Olympic Opening Ceremonies. As founder and president of the BC Fiddle Orchestra, Lapp has collected more than 1,000
original fiddle tunes by more than 100 B.C. composers. On trumpet, he has explored the history of the instrument, and jazz music in general, from its earliest forms to contemporary settings with his band, Lappelectro. • Kat Danser’s music draws a direct line from the Canadian Prairies to the Mississippi Delta. This Edmonton-based guitarist, songwriter and vocalist has been dubbed “The Queen of The Swamp Blues.” Her style is steeped
in tradition yet distills a refreshing approach to roots, blues, and gospel music for the 21st Century. • Todd Butler is a veteran contributor to CBC Radio and Television, with more than 30 years of live performance experience as both a musician/ vocalist and a comedian. Butler provides outstanding musicianship and outrageous political satire, enrapturing the audience with poignant tales of what it means to belong, to be an outsider, to be searching for something real in these crazy, virtual times. • Dean Bareham-Dean Bareham, artistic director of Green Fools Theatre — also known as the infamous “Gustavo the Impossibilist” who set his own stilts on fire — is back with a new show that is fun for all ages. As Teddy he will make people laugh, make things disappear, balance stuff, fling objects in the air, and spin plates. An interactive show where the audience
shares the spotlight. • Digawolf, AKA Jesse James Gon, is a passionate singer-songwriter who performs with great respect for his Tlicho culture. His songs have a contemporary context — part blues, part folk, part rock — complimented by masterful guitar playing that draws inspiration from the land. His recordings have received Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, and his fourth CD, Distant Morning Star, was nominated for a 2010 Juno. • Ivan Coyote was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. An award-winning author of six collections of short stories, one novel, three CD’s, four short films and a renowned performer, Ivan’s first love is live storytelling. Over the last 13 years she has become an audience favourite at music, poetry, spoken word and writer’s festivals from Anchorage to Amsterdam. See H’SAO , Page A13

H’sao delivers world music a capella Continued from A12 • Ivan Coyote was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. An award-winning author of six collections of short stories, one novel, three CDs, four short films and a renowned performer, Ivan’s first love is live storytelling. Over the last 13 years she has become an audience favourite at music, poetry, spoken word and writer’s festivals from Anchorage to Amsterdam. • Del Barber, 26, of Winnipeg, has already made his mark as the granddaddy of folk festivals in his hometown. His first CD in 2009, Where the City Ends, was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for roots Solo Album of the Year. His sophomore record, Love Songs for the Last Twenty (June 2010) has maintained a frequent presence on college radio. Now an artist in demand who’s toured coast to coast twice. • Carmen & Camille are twin sisters who have performed all over the world and have been compounding success since the release of their

debut album. In 2010 their Juno nominated single, Shine 4U, broke into the top 40 on the Canadian radio charts, won the Chum Emerging Artist Initiative Award and landed the girls at #18 on Billboard’s Emerging Artist chart. With major press from Much Music Video Awards, Much on Demand, Toro Mag, Flare, E!Talk, Billboard, Stuff Mag, Elle and several songs from their first album featured on MTV’s The Hills. Though they work in Los Angeles, Carmen and Camille still spend time in their home town of Vancouver. Their roots, however, are actually in Bella Coola, with close connections to the
Robson and Gurr families. • Mamaguroove delivers a highly infectious, homegrown, eclectic brand of revolutionary music that drives the listener headlong through a universe of musical styles ranging from Latin/flamenco based rock, to reggae, funk, folk, world beat, and even metal. Ethereal lead vocals and harmonies merge with symphonic guitar riffs, blistering rhythms, smooth fretless bass, and wild, rich saxophone. • The Woodshed Orchestra is an ecstatic, soul-filled, communal, multi-headed, celebration emancipation experience. Take a bowlful of New Orleans second
line, add a spoon of Tom Waits, drop in a dose of Sly Stone, a bone of Leonard Cohen, a hit of the scene from Al Green, and many more influences and you have the unique sound of this orchestra. • Caley Watts and her band-mates Niki Watts, Paul Grace-Campbell, and Buddy Thatcher bring a unique blend of folk and gypsy rock to the festival. Watts, who hails from Bella Coola and has performed at various venues and music festivals over the years, delivers music that reflects her appreciation for her rural roots, Indigenous heritage and the environment. October 6, 1939 July 19, 1982 You’d think aĹŒer this long the words would come faster. One learns to cope, the best one can, aĹŒer such a disaster. Losing you wasn’t supposed to happen, so early on in life, It cut deep to the bone, leĹŒ invisible scars, that emoĆ&#x;onal knife. Years have gone by, many things have now changed, But one thing stays constant, our love for you remains the same. Our growing family stays strong, holding your memory Ć&#x;ght, Each of us will see you again, when our Ć&#x;me is just right. We’d all make you proud dad, this I know well, We love the old stories your trucker friends tell. Thanks for the lessons, some good and some...well bad, We’d wait forever for one day, for Ć&#x;mes like we had. Now they say “it’s not being noĆ&#x;ced when you enter a roomâ€? that means a thing, Its how much you are truly missed, by not being there, that leaves a sĆ&#x;ng. On the day you were mourned, the town literally stood sĆ&#x;ll, You insĆ&#x;lled in us your conÄŽdence, your respect, but most importantly, your will. And those who say “Ć&#x;me heals allâ€? never lost someone quite like you, Because with the roar of a gorilla and the heart of a teddy bear, so rare comes a man to ÄŽll those shoes.
With Love your enĆ&#x;re family XO
