Record breaking - Looking out from behind the ten handmade piston trophies presented to winners at Sylvan Lake Customs and Classics show and shine there was a field of vehicles of all vintages, colours, shapes and models during the Sylvan Lake Customs and Classics sixth annual show and shine Saturday. The club broke their previous record, registering 201 participants in the event. The weather played a huge factor, shining on the owners of some mighty fine machines. More pictures on page 5. Record participation in car club’s annual show by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Participation records were exceeded at the Sylvan Lake Customs and Classics show and shine Saturday as warm breezy weather favoured the sixth annual event. Elaine Bredo, one of the organizers, said they had 201 vehicles registered, far exceeding the previous record of 169 vehicles. The total was also almost double last year’s attendance when weather forecasts kept a majority of entries away.

The vehicles were parked on the grass at the south end of the driving range at Meadowlands Golf Club. “It was a great day, a great venue and a really good crowd,” she said. “The key is we got good weather.” That’s particularly important for many of the participants who have invested heavily in gleaming paint jobs and repairs to restored vehicles. Unique handcrafted piston trophies were presented to the top ten vehicles as selected by spectators. Among the winners, in no particular

order, were Ivan Kachanoski of Fairmont Hot Springs, B.C. (1958 Chevy Impala), Clarke Lamont of Calgary (1932 Ford Roadster), Wayne Russell of Red Deer (1950 Ford Woodie), Judy McCaw of Rocky Mountain House (1955 Meteor Convertible), Patsy Kachanoski of Fairmont Hot Springs (1928 Ford truck and trailer), Bill and Deb Larratt of Penhold (1928 Ford A Phaeton), Al & Lynise Knight of Edson (1953 Olds Holiday Coupe), R. Lee Cofield of Caroline (1951 Mercury Monarch), Barry Davis of Cochrane (1951 Diamond T Model 921 truck) and Trevor Burge of Red Deer

County (1969 Chev Camaro SS). The prize for cleanest car went to Dan Johnson of Bentley with a 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner. The show is meant to bring awareness to the Sylvan Lake car club but members also do it because they have a love for the hobby of classic and custom car collecting. The club meets the first Wednesday of every month at Sylvan Lake Legion starting at 7 p.m. and everyone’s invited to attend. For more information call Gord or Elaine Bredo at 403-887-7047.

Historic calendar of Sylvan Lake features pictures and information by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

A potpourri of historic photos of Sylvan Lake are featured on the most recent offering from Sylvan Lake & District Archives Society. In celebration of the town’s centennial which takes place in 2013, the society issued an 18 month calendar which features photos and information about the community’s history. The calendar covers the period from July 2012 to December 2013. Calendars debuted during 1913 Days in June and are available at the society’s offices on the east end of the library building. Marion Thompson, who “helped immensely” in preparation of

the project, has also been selling copies at the Farmers’ Market. Bunny Virtue said she and Jean Bridge began mulling over the idea about two years ago and then started more concerted work about a year ago. They were assisted by all the volunteers at the archives who were helpful in remembering pictures that would be suitable for the various pages. “We picked some of what we considered the best historical pictures,” said Virtue. “There’s quite a range, a lot of the town’s past history.” Several more recent photos are also included such as the waterslide and annula polar dip. The first page of the calendar contains a

Then the back page is a ‘did you know’

thumbnail sketch of Sylvan Lake’s history. The calendars are selling well, added Virtue. They also planned to have a booth on main street during the Stanley Cup’s visit yesterday (Wednesday). Using a ‘printing-ondemand’ method to produce the calendars, the organization is not limited on the number of copies they can sell. Printing is handled by MJ Byrtus of TCB Business Services Inc. Among the topics featured in the calendar are Wild Rapids Waterslides, sand castles, cabins, farming, the early village, winter weather and activities, skating and curling rinks, Cobb’s store, development, the CNR station and railway, summer events, dance

halls, bathing suits, Lakeshore Drive’s evolution, hotels, garages and wintertime events. The calendars are $20 each and money raised through their production helps offset society costs of maintaining and increasing their collection of the town’s history. If you’re into more in-depth research about Sylvan Lake, the archives is the place to turn. President Denise Bignold reported at their annual meeting earlier this year that, “The inventory of accession shows we have 2,030 pictures, 331 written pages, 28 scrapbooks and albums and 467 items.” A variety of other history books are available for purchase at the society’s offices which are open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. Coffee and Conversation sessions are the third Wednesday of each month. Fire victims still amazed by generous community by Aleisha Bosch Sylvan Lake News

A Nov. 22 fire destroyed the home of Danielle Bonnamour, her common-law partner Tony Yungen, and their children, but Bonnamour continues

to be in awe of the generosity of Sylvan Lake residents. “I just couldn’t believe the help from the community,” said Bonnamour. “Just to see people that were so giving, it didn’t even feel real. I don’t think

we would find another community like this, I really don’t.” Bonnamour and her family received so many furniture donations that they filled up the basement and the spare bedroom of the house they are now living in.

They are trying to find people who need the excess furniture. They also received help from Gospel Chapel, and from Sylvan Lake and Area Community Partners’ Association, in the form of a Walmart gift card and funds to

Inspired - Cliff Therou was one of 15 poets who participated in the ninth annual Poetry Celebration at Stephansson House provincial historic site, Sunday afternoon. The site, located north of Markerville, was the homestead of Stephan G. Stephansson who farmed by day and wrote by night. His literary output has since gained him renown as one of the greatest poets in the western world. The poetry celebration is an effort to support local poets and continue to preserve the poetic tradition. Others who read their work and that of Stephansson included Alvin Baragar, Don Harris, Annette Gray, Julie Robinson, Jessie Branson, Rusti L. Lehay, Melissa Morelli Lacroix, Nancy Mackenzie, Robert Errity, Anna Mioduchowska, Sid Traikovski, Bob Stallworthy and Ron and Brian Bradley. The Branson Family Singers performed a musical interlude. Guided tours of the homestead were also available. STEVE DILLS

help them get back on their feet. “It was awesome. I had no idea what we were going to do, but Community Partners just jumped right in,” said Bonnamour. She said that in addition to paying for their rent, they also helped look after their children, including a new baby and a daughter with Down’s syndrome. “They were there from the very beginning,” said Bonnamour. “I thought after that day everything would just stop, but they were with us the entire time.” The Community Partners’ Association maintains an emergency fund to help people like Bonnamour and her family recover from disasters. According to Tina Hurlbert, a member of the organization’s board of directors and chair for the emergency

fund board, the funds had originally been donated by residents of Sylvan Lake and the surrounding area to help victims of a fire in 2010 that destroyed four homes. Hurlbert said there was an outpouring of funds from the community — so much so, that the fire’s victims didn’t need it all. The excess was turned into the emergency fund. About $13,000 remains. “The citizens of Sylvan Lake are very generous,” said Hurlbert. Part of this fund was used to help Bonnamour and her family, and Hurlbert said there’s still plenty left over. “Those funds are still ongoing. We’re still helping the people, we’re still helping the victims from those funds,” she said. “We wanted people to know that those funds are

still there.” Bonnamour said she and her family had only been living in the town for four years, and they didn’t know very many people. As soon as the fire happened, she said, people immediately stepped in to help. “Right after I was in a state of shock. My whole family was,” said Bonnamour. She added that family members living elsewhere were shocked by how much help they received from the community. The Community Partners’ Association is a registered charity in Sylvan Lake. The organization is mostly run by volunteers, with three staff members. It runs a number of events around the town, including Coats for Kids, a Community Christmas Dinner, and fundraising activities during 1913 Days.

Rotary scholarships presented by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

The Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake awarded the first of its annual scholarships to two Bentley School students. The Sylvan Lake Rotary Club PRIDE awards of $1,000 each were presented by principal Lane Moore and Rotarian Joyce Megson to Kyle Turnbull and Alick Croft during graduation ceremonies June 28. PRIDE represents the school motto of Partnership, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence. Normally the club would present one $2,000 scholarship but because the Bentley School had a very high quality of Grade 12 graduates, that was split into two $1,000 scholarships, said

Megson. The scholarships are part of a program by the Rotary Club to provide scholarships to deserving students in area schools in Sylvan Lake, Bentley and Eckville. Money for the scholarships is raised through the club’s annual golf tournament. Megson said the criteria for selecting deserving students is Rotary’s 4-Way Test (Of all the things we think, say or do, Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? and Will it be beneficial to all concerned?) Rotary’s foundational tenet of Service to Others Above Self is also considered. The scholarships are presented to recipients who are pursuing post secondary education.

I snapped his photo, storing the picwater skis, expertly weaving in and out of the wake miraculously almost, but not ture on digital and, also in my mind, quite wiping out and everyone in the because, even though the wind was boat cheering and saying things like, relentless, and the boat ride more than a little bumpy it truly was a memory keep“way to go mom, you rock”. And I visualized myself, after a long er day. And, who knows, summer, with all its and satisfying ski, during which I did not wipe out once, climbing back into the intoxicating, heady beauty, has only just boat, all shaky and dripping wet, but still begun, and there may still be a day; a really nice hot summer day when I will quietly pleased with myself. get another phone call. “I’ll be there,” I said. And I was. And, on that day; that really, nice hot It turned out, however, my fantasy summer day, the lake may be flat as glass, remained only that; a fantasy. The lake, for all its stunning, shim- and I will gingerly lower myself off the mering beauty, looked like someone had boat into the freezing, giant ice cube

some people call a lake, and struggle for about half an hour to slip my feet into the boots of the water skis (this is a realistic fantasy), and, after much threshing around in a very unlady like manner, grasp the end of the ski rope. And then, finally, once I get my breath, I will lean back focusing my eyes on the blue, sky above me until the rope is taunt and the boat motor idling, but not too fast. Then, I will say, “hit it.” Of course, nothing will happen because the driver won’t hear the words, so I will

flounder about for a few minutes and then finally yell “hit it” again, but really loud. And this time the boat will roar into action, and I will be up and flying and when conscious thought returns to me I will think, “I love this. This is incredible. Wow.” Then I will smile at the people in the boat, but they won’t be able to see the smile clearly because of the crystal clear wake splashing up between me and them. But it doesn’t really matter. It’s kind of like the sun shining between the raindrops. You don’t really have to see it to know it is there.

The best of summer; reminiscences of past joys Summer is here. I don’t care if the calendar says June 20 was the first official day. For me, summer doesn’t start until July. When I was in grade school, summer was a magical season of ice cream, sprinklers, dirt, and friends. My backyard in Calgary had been landscaped with all manner of trees, rocks, and plants, among which I spent most of the day playing. There was one particular rock that rose up in two small humps and had a bowl-shaped depression in the middle. My friend from across the street, Danielle, and I would sit on each of the humps and pretend we were witches stirring potion in a cauldron. The “potion” was made of whatever

we could find - usually dirt, leaves, berries, and water. One time we got lucky and found sand, which had the perfect thick, goopy texture when moistened. We used a stick to stir. There were also three ant nests around my yard. I liked poking them from a safe distance and watching them swarm out in such a frenzy that they ran over each other. I liked to leave food for them as well, usually chunks of cheese that required the teamwork of several to move. Sometimes, I also liked to pick them up with leaves and send them “rafting” in water. In our side yard were flat-topped sheds with ladders. One was located right next to the kitchen window, providing the perfect opportunity to

mooch ice cream from whomever was inside. Even better was the familiar music of the ice cream truck as it drove down the street. There was nothing better at getting me to stop what I was doing and run outside. It didn’t matter it was the same ice cream they sold at the grocery store, it always tasted better to me. As I grew up, my summers changed from playing to working. Even then, there was still something about sum-

mer that was different from the rest of the year. It wasn’t just the warm weather, it was what the weather did to people. Warm weather makes people more relaxed and sociable. It encourages people to leave their houses and to engage in more public activities. This past March when I was at university in New Brunswick, there was an unexpected heat wave that lasted for three days. Temperatures hovered around 28 degrees. Everyone that had previously been hibernating moved outside to the central courtyard on campus. People were playing guitars, the residences were barbecuing burgers, and professors held classes on the grass while their students sat in a circle around them. The cafeteria

sold out of popsicles before dinner the first day. Nobody got any work done, even those who, with all good intentions, brought their textbooks outside with them. I had never seen campus like that in my four years there. What was really remarkable, though, wasn’t the weather. It was the effect it had on people, and on the campus atmosphere. Everyone was friendly with everyone else. For those three fantastic days, people seemed to feel a pressing need to get outside and talk to others. In my opinion, this is what makes summer so special. It isn’t the weather, it isn’t the food, and it isn’t the vacation. It’s the time you spend with people.

If it’s important enough, let’s just change the paradigm Dear Editor, Community is a wonderful thing, especially — as we saw recently in Pierview, when it pulls together for the common good. The unfortunate side of the coin (not to be negative) is that we don’t all seem to be on the same page. That’s not the contradiction it sounds like. Please read on … To be sure, the process of decisionmaking itself seems skewed: outside for-profit developers basically get to decide for us what our community will look like and therefore how we will live while the residents are mostly muzzled by comparison. In my recent unplanned and notso-willing introduction into the halls of local politics, I felt a distinct separation between “us”, the general voting

populace, and those whom we asked to look after our — and their — community interests. Instead of all of us as Lakers being on the same side in building an outstanding, different community using the existing, natural gifts we have as a backdrop to development rather than erasing it all and repeatedly wanting to start with a fresh page, I saw the usual third party, purely for-profit developer wagging the dog, telling us what we needed (for their sole benefit) and having it virtually swallowed hook, line and sinker “because we’re not developers” ergo they must know better. Well in as much as we may not know all the legal ins and outs, or even the back-stage issues related to the land deal itself, we can have vision that is above the run-

of-the-mill that developers are allowed to build everywhere else. So once again, the citizens of Sylvan Lake held court on keeping our beautiful natural resources but the sad part is that if history is correct, we continue having to do this so obviously the message is not being taken to heart. Sorry but I’ve got to ask the question: Do these things only matter if someone makes a noise? In summary folks, if it’s important enough to keep responding positively to taxpayer requests to keeps mature tree stands and maintain the ‘country’ feel of Sylvan Lake as we grow, let’s just simplify it and change the paradigm. We’re all grateful for the recent win in keeping the mature tree stand on

the south boundary of Pierview for all to enjoy, even if the process is currently lopsided, and not in the residents’ favour in any way. Who knows, maybe even the process can change — it is just a process — so that we, as residents on both sides of the table, can at some point soon have an equal voice or better yet, just trust the template already in our bylaws is being adhered to and improved upon. It IS our community, we all own it, let’s keep it that way. Who knows whose backyard or piece of shoreline the next issue will be in. Let’s all remember we’re in charge, not the developers who come, reap and go home. Yes, we do need their expertise but it should be to fit our template for the future before pencil goes to paper

not just their maximum number of lot frontage feet per acre. But the big bonus for me was that in this whole adventure I got to know my community better, met some wonderful new people, learned some names to put to faces (be warned, I will probably ask you again what your name is), made some new friends and even learned something about how our town is run. True community is a wonderful and rare thing these days. Let’s build a truly gorgeous, unified one. Thanks everyone. You’re all amazing. Heather Donald, Sylvan Lake

Lots created for first residential construction in Crestview by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Creation of the first lots in the new Crestview subdivision was approved by Municipal Planning Commission members Monday night. The 60 single family residential lots will be located in the northwest corner of the quarter section, bordering Pierview subdivision. The lots will be accessed by an extension of Parson Drive which will connect to 50th Street and service all the lots in the area. The lots are all on the

north side of a pipeline right-of-way which runs diagonally through the property. Also included in the subdivision are a municipal reserve area running along the north boundary which is meant to preserve trees. There’s a substantial area of municipal reserve in the northeast corner of the subdivision which borders a similar reserve in the Vista at Ryders Ridge quarter immediately east and a reserve in the southwest corner of Ryders Ridge. The pipeline right-of-

way in the subdivision is labelled as a public utility lot. The residential lots were designated as R1A (Medium Lot Residential District) and R4 (Narrow Lot General Residential District) by council at its June 25 meeting. The total area being subdivided is 8.747 hectares (21.61 acres), according to a report by planner Jolene Tejkl. Due to council’s concern about the trees and protecting the root systems from damage during construction, a restrictive covenant will

be registered against the titles of the lots backing the north boundary “for the purpose of ensuring that future construction and development … is undertaken in a manner that prevents damage to the root system of the existing trees …” Five phases are planned for development of the quarter section. It will eventually contain 625 units of low density residential, 143 units in high density residential and 41 in mixed use providing for an estimated population of 1,986 on 60.6 hectares (150 acres).

Relaxing - While he’s created a relaxing atmosphere, the beauty could be gone so quickly, worried Ray Gelinas who invited us into his garden last Friday. He figured the mainly perennial garden was at its height with delphiniums towering high and a variety of other colourful plants adding to the enjoyment of his backyard. “Today it’s going to look as nice as it’s ever going to look,” said Gelinas, 75. If a heavy wind went through it would break the stocks of the tall plants. He said his raspberries are looking very promising while sunflowers aren’t growing well this year. If you’d like to show off your garden, give us a call or email a picture to editor@sylvanlakenews.com. STEVE DILLS

Two Sylvan Lake schools will benefit from funding provided by Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Education Foundation. A total of $38,000 was announced for three division initiatives and sixteen school projects in late June, according to foundation president Kurt Schultz. “We are seeing incredible ideas coming forward, from literacy initiatives, band workshops and pottery programs to faith murals, leadership retreats, health and wellness programs and much more,” he said. “These are all projects that are not funded by tax dollars that would require schools to do significant fundraising.” École Mother Teresa Catholic School received $1,500 for development of a multi-sensory room while Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School received $1,000 for a Clay for Kids Pottery Program. Division wide programs for schools in Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, Rocky Mountain House, Innisfail and Olds, include $4,000 for a Grade 5 Beginner Band Day, $4,000 for We Are Precious in God’s Sight Art Centre, $800 for an FNMI (First Nations, Métis and Inuit) author visit and $1,500 for Grow Boys - Grade 5 leadership. The Education Foundation organizes fundraising initiatives throughout the school year and held its annual fundraiser gala in May raising over $35,000. The non-profit society was established in 2009 to enhance the mission of Catholic education and promote the advancement of education for the division’s students and alumni.

Councillors missed opportunity to send message to create something different Dear Editor, Over the last three weeks I have been exposed to the process of how approval for a new development takes place in Sylvan. I am a resident of Pierview and recently learned that Lamont Land (the developers of Ryder’s Ridge) are the owners of the property that borders the south side of Pierview and they have been going through the process with the town to develop that property. Lamont followed due process that the town prescribed by holding an open house in March. At that time they were required only to show high-lighted areas that would be developed on the quarter section, no lot plans were presented. It was at that time that we learned that the high pressure gas lines on that quarter were not right on the south side of the trees as most of us believed but that they came across the quarter on an angle and development was

planned for north of the pipeline. They received some concerns from residents but made no changes or concessions. Town council gave first reading to the development then required them to hold a public hearing. A week or so before the public hearing, residents affected by the development received a letter that contained a detailed drawing of Stage 1 of Crestview which is north of the pipeline to the south border of Pierview. The plan called for all of the trees to be taken out along Pierview and 62 lots to be wedged into that space. Well, over 50 Pierview residents showed up for the public hearing on June 25th only to find a process that favors the developer. Here’s how it worked: 1. Town planners do a presentation on the proposed development that includes a powerpoint about how wonderful it will be and how all town bylaws have been fol-

lowed in planning this development. They review the letters from residents they received and summarily dismiss them, generally by hiding behind a bylaw. If they didn’t announce that it was the town planners doing the presentation you would swear it was the developers doing it — they have as much time as they require to do their presentation. 2. The second part of the process is the public hearing part. The public are notified at this point that when they stand to speak they will have only five minutes and if someone has spoken to a concern once there was no need to repeat it by someone else. The invitation we received for the public hearing says it is an “informal” meeting — it turns out to be very formal. 3. The developer now has the chance to do a presentation which is essentially the same presentation as the town planner but they now have the opportunity to

answer all of the concerns that were raised by the residents. They also have as much time as they would like to speak. 4. Council then makes a decision based on the information they have. In the Pierview public hearing council heard very loud and clear that removing the trees along the south side of Pierview was unacceptable and to their credit council committed to save those trees by designating a strip of Municipal Reserve (MR) to separate the two developments. They refused to give the developer direction on how wide the MR must be even though, as residents, we asked for a 12-15 metre buffer so that not only could the trees be saved but a walking path could be built right from 50th Street across the whole quarter and connected into the CP trail system at the east end of Pierview. Residents met later that week

with representatives from Lamont Land at their request to discuss the plan. They “listened” to our concerns but informed us that they had surveyed the trees and decided that six metres would be enough to get them to the other side and that there was no “economic viability” in giving any more than that. They also informed us that they had met with the town planners earlier in the day and because it would be considered a “minor change” that there would not be another public hearing required and the decision was solely up to council at this point. I have heard the expression that developers are like children — they will only rise to your lowest expectation. Lamont made absolutely no concessions above what was required by council from the June 25th public hearing. Continued on Page 10

Continued from Page 9 Since they planned to shut the residents out of any more input I took the lot plan that Lamont proposed and reworked it with a 12-15m MR. It included fewer lots but sig-

nificantly larger lots to prove that not only could it be done in the space available but could be done in an economically viable way. I sent this plan to Lamont as well as town council and I also draft-

ed an email that I sent directly to each member of town council that explained how town planners and Lamont planned to hide behind the system to keep residents from speaking to the matter again.

I managed to get on the July 9th council agenda as a delegate and was given 15 minutes on behalf of all Pierview residents to state our case. I presented information from a Mississippi State University study on the protection of the trees and how the 6m MR would give the trees on the south side only a 50/50 chance of survival through the construction process. I also explained the drawing I had submitted which proved that it could be done responsibly, work economically and provide an excellent opportunity to add to our walking path system in Sylvan. It was interesting that no questions were asked for clarification during any of my presentation. Once I finished, Lamont was given time

to discuss their new plan. They said my plan was not economically viable but were not asked for any proof of that. They suggested that they had made some concessions during this process but had done nothing more than directed by council two weeks earlier. They could not provide a revised drawing of the lot plan and basically said “trust us”, we’ll get you one. There were questions by council and an opportunity for clarification and discussion. Once they finished then town planners presented the revised plan again and again there was discussion and opportunity for clarification. Planners recommended the revised plan be approved and actually signed off on it without a revised drawing from Lamont being submitted.

Through this process there was no discernible difference between the town planners and Lamont. Planners represented only the interests of Lamont Land and seemed annoyed by the demands of residents and had absolutely no vision of what opportunity they were missing by not providing room for a walking path. At this point town council had a choice, they could have refused to approve the revised plan and specified a larger MR (we asked for 15m) that would accommodate a walking path, essentially table the decision until more research and planning was done or they could approve the revised plan and accommodate the wishes of Lamont Land and their own planners. After limited debate they chose the second option. Let me very clear, council did not break any rules and the decision they made was well within their mandate to make but they missed an opportunity, an opportunity to send

a message to their own planners to put the residents of Sylvan Lake first, both current and future, and create neighborhoods that are different from other towns. They could have told developers that we will determine the look of the town and will not support profit at all costs from outside interests. I will give Council full credit for preserving the trees for us, six metres of trees are better than nothing and I do see that as a “win” for Pierview residents but that doesn’t mean it was the best decision in the big picture. 15 metres of MR and a walking path would have been a beautiful addition to the town’s path system and would have created a lot of value for all Sylvan Lakers, not just Pierview and Crestview residents. Benalto artist explores magic of gardens in new exhibit by Mark Weber Black Press

The nature of gardens has always meant much to artist David More, who has an amazing ability to capture their beauty in his richly-rendered paintings. More, who calls Benalto home, is presenting a new exhibit at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery called The Garden Ceremony. Showcasing works that ‘explore gardens as imaginary havens, as the seats of memory and as places of refuge

from personal turmoil,’ the exhibit runs until Sept. 5. A reception was held Tuesday and an artist’s talk is planned for Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. More, 64, has been working on the series since the mid-1970s. He did a number of drawings that tapped into a garden theme and from there, a theme began to flow. “I began to call it The Garden Ceremony because it was something I was going through,” he recalls. “But I began to realize that other people would be going through the

same thing. When things were going bad and I needed to escape, I would go to parks. I would see others doing the same thing, and I realized that in a way they were seeking refuge. They were finding a haven in the midst of the chaos around them. They were able to deal with their emotions, and maybe sometimes escape from them.” The Garden Ceremony has grown to include more than 200 works. In the exhibit at the museum, 15 paintings will be showcased along with nine drawings which

show where the ideas come from. Some of the images have been inspired by visits to such places as Brazil and India. For More, it’s been an exhilarating creative journey with unexpected turns along the way. And at various times he’s considered the project ‘a wrap’. But then he would travel and discover more gardens and the roles they have in people’s lives in other places. Fresh inspiration would spring up. Continued on Page 13

Expression - Benalto artist David More’s Embankment with Arbutus is one of several portraits included in The Garden Ceremony. The exhibit runs at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery from July 7 to Sept. 5.

Exhibit runs at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery Continued from Page 11 “They are combinations of real places and imagined places, memories of places and memories of events told to me by others that turned into places.” Spitfire Steps is a vivid portrait merging English garden steps with the garden birdbath of More’s childhood home in Red Deer. Lancaster Moon captures the mystery of a nighttime sky with its shimmering moonlight on a terraced stone wall. More was born in Scotland, but was raised in Alberta — mostly in Red Deer. “As a young tadpole learning to walk I was always an aggressive doodler, and my mum encouraged me to draw on the cardboard shirt stiffeners that came out of my dad’s freshly laundered shirts from the steam laundry,” he explains. “But my real childhood interest in

art as a vehicle for communicating probably began with comic books and realizing how effectively they told stories. “The power of serious art as portrayed in historical and contemporary art really came into focus when I attended art college and was presented with so many flexible variations of expression and communication.” Being able to coauthor and illustrate books with the late humourist Eric Nicol offered More the chance to engage his practice in a less serious but no less intense mode, he says. “As a painter though, I have been able to approach the serious side of life when I felt compelled to express outrage or disbelief or disappointment with our human behaviour.” More, who is always gracious and humble in spite of his tremendous gifting as an artist, is

excited about the opportunity of sharing The Garden Ceremony with viewers. “Really, The Garden Ceremony has little to do with gardening, and everything to do with the human race,” he says. “Humanity with its greatest and loftiest aspirations has created the most beautiful things imaginable, but in the blink of an eye we can undermine and disturb and even destroy what has been attained. “And we are not talking about material things but ide-

als, or societal values. The Garden Ceremony is a metaphorical attempt to come to grips with that. On the one hand we can create what we consider to be perfect beauty, but we can quickly walk away from it and abandon it and let it fall into ruin. “A lot of my images are of gardens that may be interpreted as being on the edge of abandonment, or also as in the process of regeneration. The viewers decide for themselves.”

Sylvan Lake Water Level Management– What You Need to Know! Sylvan Lake water levels remain high this year, and current levels are impacting important environmental and recreation areas that serve the central Alberta region. Shoreline erosion has also affected waterfront property owners. The Sylvan Lake Management Committee, comprised of federal, provincial and local government representatives, are researching options and solutions to reduce the negative impacts associated with fluctuating water levels. Here are some facts about Sylvan Lake that you need to know! x x

Sylvan Lake is a natural water body that receives inflow from precipitation, surface water and groundwater, which aids in maintaining good water quality and clarity. Most water loss on Sylvan Lake’s large surface area (42 sq kilometers) is due to evaporation. A combination of hot, dry & windy days creates the greatest evaporation, which lowers lake levels.

x

The lake’s deepest point is 18 meters, making it deeper than other local lakes such as Pigeon, Buffalo and Gull Lakes.

x

As of 2011, the highest recorded water level in 60 years was in August 2011 at 937.31 m.

x

The Lake has a fish bearing outlet that flows south easterly to Cygnet Lake through the Cygnet Lake Drainage District and ultimately into the Red Deer River.

x

Sylvan Lake is a popular sport fishing destination for Walleye, Northern Pike and Lake Whitefish. Both Federal & Provincial regulations require that fish habitat be protected.

Town hopes to maintain safe, clean beach with dog bylaw by Aleisha Bosch Sylvan Lake News

While the Town of Sylvan Lake welcomes suntanners, picnickers, and young families to the grassy Lakeshore area, town bylaws passed in 2009 prohibit dogs from joining them. According to town communications officer Joanne Gaudet, dogs are allowed to accompany their owners in the Centennial Park area if they stay on the concrete path and keep off the grass. They also have to be on a leash at all times, in the park and throughout the town. In addition, they are not allowed to be near playground equipment, or a rubber or sand play area.

The bylaw is a response to health and safety concerns of both people and animals. “The priority here is the safety and wellness of people,” said Gaudet. She added that the town spoke with a veterinarian at Pathways Animal Clinic. For some dogs, heat, nearby food and children can create anxiety. Gaudet said that because it’s not possible to be sure how certain dogs will react if anxious, the bylaw prohibits all dogs from grassy areas, which are more crowded with people. “It’s just not a space for dogs,” said Gaudet. “It’s not that type of environment with as many people as we have.” She added that many different vari-

around, the last thing they’re thinking about is how to be responsible around an animal.” Gaudet said dog waste was another consideration, especially because many people prepare and consume food while picnicking on the grass. She added that the town is looking into installing dog bag dispensers along the concrete path, but responsible pet owners should be leaving their home with bags already in-hand. Animal control officer Jim de Boon said people not picking up after their dogs is one of the biggest issues he deals with, along with barking, biting, and dogs at large. Further creating confusion is the blurred line between municipal

and provincial park boundaries, said de Boon. Dogs are not permitted anywhere in the provincial park, but de Boon has no authority to enforce laws there. “There’s a jurisdictional conundrum,” he said. “Whatever I saw there didn’t matter, because as soon as I leave town limits I’m done.” de Boon said another problem is that because the boundary is not marked, many people can go from an area where dogs are permitted to the provincial park without realizing. He said some people take advantage of the different jurisdictions by purposely walking their dogs in the provincial park, knowing municipal

animal control services have no power over them. “It’s a source of frustration for me,” said de Boon. Provincial park laws are enforced by RCMP members, and by park conservation officers. Gaudet said she hasn’t heard of people having any issues with the bylaw, but there might not be enough awareness about it. Every community has animal control bylaws, said Gaudet, adding that she hopes Sylvan Lake’s bylaws create a clean and enjoyable space for everyone at the beach. “Our animal control is more about being responsible and enforcing that.”

Resident sickened by results of speeding driver always seemed like such a beautiful town — people were so nice, and of course there’s the lake. Now that I live here, I can’t wait to get out. We have made numerous (sometimes twice daily) complaints about people speeding past our home. I’ve given license plate numbers, vehicle descriptions, driver descriptions, at all hours of the day and night. I know it’s not just this neighbourhood because we used to live on 47th right by Scotiabank and it was to the point we couldn’t sleep. We moved off the main street in hopes of enjoying our home. I understand that Sylvan Lake is a tourist town and that in the summer especially, the population rises. I totally get that. I get that the RCMP are understaffed, I fully understand. But

when we make numerous complaints of people going over 60 km/h something should be done. I’ve even offered my driveway to the police to sit in it, totally hidden, to hand out tickets. I will gladly park on the street for them to park in my driveway for a couple hours. Guaranteed, within one hour they could hand out probably 20-30 tickets for speeding. This was an absolutely sickening scene. I’m terrified thinking there could be people standing on that sidewalk, there could be children, the neighbour could have been working in his yard! How many times does this have to happen? How many lives need to be endangered and possibly lost? What do the residents of Sylvan Lake have to do to be able to enjoy

Dear Editor, Tonight - July 11, 2012 - I saw a scene that made me sick. As I got up from trying to relax I heard a vehicle approaching quickly. I looked out in time to see a black chevy pickup fly past my house, try to make a turn and end up in the neighbour’s yard (just a few feet from the neighbor’s house) — the police were in pursuit. Unfortunately I can attest to the fact that seeing vehicles speeding past my house is NOT out of the norm. I see it on a daily basis, you can go for two houses before hitting another stop sign. There are children who play on the road, my fiance and I take walks on the sidewalk, our neighbour works hard to keep his yard beautiful. I moved to this town one year ago because it

Elizabeth Moore (11) once again had a stellar weekend crushing club records in all her swims and also making finals in all of her swims. She swam the 200 IM and came 15th overall, her 50 back she finished 13th, her 100 back she finished 17th place and got a 12 year old provincial A time, 100 breast she finished ninth, 50 fly she finished 12th, 200 breast she finished seventh and in the 50 breast after prelims she was tied for 10th place and had to do a swim off to make it into the A finals. She did it taking 0.54 off her previous time to make it and finished ninth in the

end. Elizabeth made the A finals in all her breast stroke events. We would like to also mention she was recognized as one of the top five swimmers in Alberta for the 10 and under swimmers in long course. Great season Elizabeth. Erin Matthews (12) swam the 100 free, 100 breast, 50 fly, 200 breast, 50 back, 50 breast and 50 free style. Erin made it to the finals in her 50 metre freestyle and came in 17th place only 0.05 seconds off a club record. Erin took time off five out of seven swims and had a total combined time off of 20.87 seconds. In Erin’s 200 breast she took 18.25 seconds off and climbed a total of five spots over all. Awesome weekend Erin. Amber Carson (13) swam the 50, 200 and 800 free style swims and the 50, 100 and 200 butterfly

swims. Amber took time off five out of her six swims. She made it to the finals in the 100 fly finishing 17th and 200 butterfly finishing 12th. Amber also got club records in both of these swims. She took a combined total of 10.37 seconds off and climbed a combined total of 16 places in the standings. This girl can FLY! Chase Murdoch (16) swam the 50 and 100 freestyle, 50 and 100 butterfly and 50 and 100 back stroke. Chase made it to the finals in the 50 fly finishing 22nd in the 15 and over category while placing seventh in Alberta for his age. He took time off of four out of six swims, breaking four club records. Chase took a total combined time of 1.87 seconds off and moved up an amazing 64 places overall in his swims. What a great way to finish the season.

Samantha Murdoch (18) swam the 50, 100, 200 and 400 freestyle swims and the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke swims. Sam took time off of two of the seven swims breaking two club records. Her combined total time off was 1.01 seconds and she moved up 38 places overall in the standings. What an accomplishment! Sam will be entering her second year of university in the fall and doesn’t think she will be able to keep up the swimming with her school work load and time spent volunteering. Great season Samantha and good luck in the future. Good luck to Amber Carson and Elizabeth Moore who will both be attending the Alberta Summer Games the weekend of July 26-29 in Lethbridge. GO ZONE 4 GO!

SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Thursday, July 19, 2012

Level of competition remained high at horse show by Aleisha Bosch Sylvan Lake News

Even though Benalto Horse Show had about 10 less entries than last year, the level of competition still remained high, according to organizer Bunny Caton. “You do get pretty good competition. There’s always good competition at this show,” said Caton of the event held in conjunction with Benalto Fair and Stampede. There were 49 classes in the competition, which were divided among the different age groups. Competitors could enter as many classes as they liked, as long as they remained within their age group. For each class, there are different traits the judges look for when selecting a winner. Sometimes the horse is judged, and other times it’s the rider, said Caton. “It’s a very popular sport to ride horses. It just is an avenue for people to expose and present their horses,” she said. The obstacle challenge, held in the Benalto rodeo arena, was also part of the horse show. The challenge tested horse compliance and willing-

ness to obey the rider, using obstacles that required skills on the parts of both the rider and the horse. The obstacle challenge was similar to the Canadian Cowboy Challenge, said Caton. The cowboy challenge emphasizes the horsemanship of ranching activities and trail riding. However, Caton said the Benalto obstacle challenge is judged differently from the cowboy challenge. “It’s like a jeopardy trail,” said Caton. This year’s Benalto Horse Show winners for each age division are: Ages 10 and under: High Point winner Sara Ebl with horse Marshmallow, Reserve winner Rachel Devet with horse Maverick. Ages 11-13: High Point winner Bailey Kentz with horse Tessa, Reserve winner Nicole Blair with horse Beansprout. Ages 14-17: High Point winner Caitlyn Malyk with horse Hes Lopin Spotless, Reserve winner Reagan Noyes with horse Ace. Adult: High Point winner Randi McCook with horse Ostentatious, Reserve winner Lynn Johnson with horse Cash Sirtificate.

Gina-Mae Merriman competed with her horse Xavier in horse jumping July 6 at Benalto Stampede.

Bailey Kentz rode her horse Tessa on a practise run around the arena before competing in the horse show at Benalto Stampede July 7.

Laura-Gene Haga rode her horse Texcel while carrying a large stuffed bear as part of an obstacle course at Benalto Stampede July 7. Competitors had to pick up the bear from a wheelbarrow, carry it one lap around the arena, and place it back in the wheelbarrow without it falling out. Some horses were spooked by the bear and refused to go near it.

ALEISHA BOSCH PHOTOS

Martince East showed her horse So Radicalized in the Geldings three and over class at Benalto Stampede July 7. They won second place in the class.

Lynn Johnson walked her horse Cash Sirtificate backwards between two poles while holding a golf ball, to represent an egg, on a spoon. The task was part of an obstacle course at Benalto Stampede July 7. Competitors had to complete several tasks with the golf ball, making sure not to drop it before placing it back on a barrel.
