Wildlife alert for Kootenay National Park
PHOTO ANDREA RAPCEWICZ
Visitors to Kootenay National Park on Highway 93 were seen feeding this wolf rice cakes. Submitted Parks Canada is issuing a wildlife alert for Banff, Yoho and Kootenay national parks and is asking motorists to drive carefully and refrain from feeding animals on mountain park roads. Wildlife face considerable risks this time of year. Wolves and black bears are two species of particular concern. With recordbreaking snowfall last winter and a late melt in spring, many remain in valley bottoms in search of food, placing them in close proximity to roads and increasing the probability of accidents. Seven black bears have been killed on roads in Banff, Yoho and Kootenay national parks this year, with speed believed to have played a major role. All black bear strikes have occurred along stretches of road that have not been twinned or fenced. “Parks Canada takes the protection of our wildlife very seriously and we are greatly concerned by and regret the loss of these animals,” said Rick Kubian, Resource Conservation Manager in Lake Louise, Yoho and Kootenay. “Our dedicated staff work hard to minimize collisions with wildlife, but we cannot act alone – we really need the public’s help.” Parks Canada hopes that increased driver vigilance will make roads safer for wildlife and people. “We ask that visitors please slow down, observe
speed limits and be extra vigilant on the roads at dawn and dusk when animals are most active,” added Kubian. “Not only can following the speed limit prolong an animal’s life by many years, it also contributes to human safety and has the potential to save lives.” Parks Canada is also reminding visitors that feeding or harassing wildlife is against the law and visitors should avoid touching, enticing, feeding, or harassing wildlife. Feeding wildlife can lead to habituation, causing animals to lose their wariness of humans and increasing the risk of accidents. There have been reports of visitors feeding wildlife in the mountain parks this spring and summer, including a recent incident on Highway 93S in Kootenay National Park where a wolf was approached and fed. Parks Canada employs a number of onthe-ground management actions to help reduce roadside wildlife collisions and habituation, including the use of Bear Guardians and signage to alert visitors to the presence of wildlife on roads. Bear Guardians interact with visitors on park roads to prevent, monitor and manage bear jams. Bear Guardians work closely with resource conservation personnel, who are trained to work directly with bears to minimize the probability of bear/ human conÀicts and keep bears away from roads, garbage and other risks. Parks Canada strongly encourages the pub-
lic to report wildlife sightings and suspicious behaviour – such as wildlife feeding or
hazardous driving – by calling 1 888-WARDENS.

More and more people work from home these days, but few of them possess a suitable area in which to spend their work day. Your kitchen table may be a comfortable place, but it is absolutely no good for working, with all the distractions that come with that location. With this in mind, here are a few tips for creating a stylish and functional home of¿ce. Choose a quiet area that is well lit, well ventilated, and where there aren’t many comings and goings. Ideally it should be in an enclosed room, far from sources of noise such as a television, a child’s bedroom, or the front door. It is important that a home of¿ce be independent from the rest of the house; this will help you separate your professional activities from your private life. Décor is another important element to consider, as a home of¿ce requires a special sort of atmosphere. Why not try an increasingly popular trend in home fashions: eco-luxury. Creating this style simply means using recycled materials or objects in order to produce a more up-market look. Choosing furniture that contains a blend of Plexiglass, good quality leather, and recycled wood is a wonderful way to introduce this kind of element into an of¿ce setting. Other ideas include a chair and footrest covered with recycled fabrics, such as denim, to convey a touch of playfulness and dynamism. An of¿ce is also a great place to practice ecodesign, a trend that promotes the optimization of recycled materials, simplicity, and restraint. A low-clutter philosophy is key, as it will allow you to improve your concentration and work in a more productive manner. Last but not least, be creative when choosing storage: there is no need to spend a lot

FORD (BC)
Dependable is the name of the Basic family vehicle or sporty sedan, the Kia Forte is built to suit drivers game with the 2012 Escape
PHOTO SUBMITTED
With its electric motor for low-speed driving, optional automated parking system and a dependable 2.5-lire four-cylinder engine, the Escape saves money and stress on the road. Overall: Ford’s popular Escape still hits the right mix of tall-wagon utility and offroad ability; ¿nally due for replacement in 2013 with a “world” model, which means it will likely be smaller. Drivetrain: Gasoline fourand six-cylinder powerplants carry over, as does the fuelfrugal gas-electric Hybrid. With more than a decade using essentially the same shell, the Escape is one of Ford’s most reliable hits. The company plans to replace it in 2013 with a global model that will be sold in nearly every market, but in the meantime the Escape still offers an attractive and usable package. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine makes 171 horsepower, while the optional four-cam 3.0-litre V6 lifts the horsepower bar to 240 ponies. A ¿ve-speed manual
transmission connects to the 2.5, while a six-speed automatic comes standard with the V6 (optional on the 2.5). The 2.5 is thrifty, for sure, but for serious fuel savings the gas-electric Escape Hybrid’s specially modi¿ed 153-horsepower 2.5-litre I4 combines with a 94-horsepower electric motor to produce a combined 177 horsepower. At rest, the gasoline engine is shut down. When you’re ready to go, the electric motor is called into action until the Escape reaches about 40 km-h, at which point the gas motor is seamlessly brought on board. The juice comes from 90 kilograms (and 330-volts) worth of batteries built into the rear load Àoor that are recharged when the brakes are applied. The system achieves a 5.8/6.5 (city/highway) l/100 km rating and 6.6/7.3 for the option-
al 4x4. An interesting feature is the optional automated parking system borrowed from the larger Flex wagon. It uses the parking-assist sensors to determine if you have enough room to parallel park. If so, the steering wheel will automatically turn the wheel to squeeze the Escape into place. Standard is Ford’s programmable MyKey, which is a useful control system aimed at younger drivers. Top speed is limited, the traction control is locked in the “on” position and the audio-system output is restricted to about half of maximum volume so the driver can hear what’s going on around him or her. In addition, a rear-view camera can be ordered, as can a system that helps keep the Escape in its lane by ¿ghting crosswinds.

Generous sizing, combined with fuel economy make the Forte perfect for families. Overall: Kia’s valuepacked sedan and ¿ve-door hatchback carry through unchanged, but are still competitive in a segment that’s heating up in 2012. Drivetrain: The base LX and mid-range EX models offer a 2.0-litre inline fourcylinder engine making 156 horsepower, while the performance-minded SX has a 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder; all transmissions, whether manual and automatic, are six-speeds. Even though by modern standards the Forte sedan is approaching mid-life, there’s no crisis for Kia. Despite its age, the vehicle’s generous dimensions still place it ahead of the Toyota Corolla and new Honda Civic, while its ample trunk ranks second in class, exceeded only by the Suzuki SX4’s cargo hold. For those who need more Àexibil-
ity hauling bulky objects, the ¿ve-door hatchback should be an easy choice. To better distinguish it from the sedan, the Forte5 hatchback gets a different grille, alloy wheels, lower valence design and center console. Both models share a logically con¿gured dashboard/control panel with its minimum of dials and switches. The Forte’s platform provides a reasonably agile behind-the-wheel experience. This is especially true of the Forte SX that possesses a sport-tuned suspension plus larger-than-standard front brake rotors for added stopping power. The Forte starts with a 156-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder in base LX and mid-range EX trims. Opting for the more performance-minded SX gets you a 173-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder. Both engines use either six-speed manual
or optional six-speed automatic transmissions. Choosing the automatic also brings steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for extra control. The LX is pretty basic, but does provide a four-speaker audio system with an auxiliary USB computer port for external music players such as Apple’s iPod. EX and SX models add air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, power windows and door locks plus steeringwheel audio controls for the upgraded six-speaker audio package. The SX adds a telescoping steering column, unique 17-inch wheels, rear spoiler and sport bucket front seats with fancier trim. New options include a Supervision meter cluster, which is essentially a more elaborate trip computer that’s standard with the EX Tech package.

Arson to Pickup
On Feb 12, 2012, 1725 hrs, a report of a burnt abandoned pickup was received by the police. The truck was found by Hidden Valley Rd near the gravel pit. The police attended the scene and determined that a 2007, D3500, Dodge, dually pickup had been totally destroyed by the arson. The owner of the truck was out of the country on a cruise at the time. Upon his return from vacation the owner stated he had left the vehicle at South City Auto for repairs on February 8th, with the keys in drop box. He left for vacation on February 9th. Employees at the repair shop reported they had never seen the vehicle at all. This indicates there are two crime locations, the Âżrst where the vehicle was stolen from and the second where it was burnt. The replacement value of the destroyed Dodge pickup is estimated at $28,000. Do you know anyone or any location where this type of activity is occuring or have information on any other crime, if so; Crime Stoppers will pay a reward up to $2,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for this crime. If you have any information about this crime or any other crime, call Crime Stoppers. You don't have to reveal your identity. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display.
