Through April, tourism tax revenue on rise in Kamloops By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

Kamloops’ tourism numbers are right on track, according to the latest update from Tourism Kamloops. The agency is reporting a four per cent increase in accommodation tax-revenue for the first four months of 2012, compared to the same time period in 2011. “It’s on track with exactly what we

were projecting,” said Tourism Kamloops CEO Lee Morris, who called the tax numbers “our truest measure of how many people are overnighting in the city.” Last year, the city saw tax revenue jump by more than 16 per cent in the first quarter of 2011 and an overall increase of 10 per cent from 2010. This year, Tourism Kamloops is forecasting a five per cent growth in revenue from the tax. Morris said the agency chose to set a

lower number for this year’s target. “We felt it might be a bit more of a moderate year,” she said. “So, tracking four per cent for year-todate is good, it’s really good.” The two per cent hotel room tax is collected from all hotels and motels in the city and helps Tourism Kamloops measure the number of business and leisure travelers coming into town. A Tk’emlups Indian Band member is dead and another is facing charges after a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run on band land over the weekend — capping off a tragic week for the First Nations community. “Everybody’s absolutely devastated,” said former TIB chief Manny Jules. “We’re just wondering when all this is going to stop.” David Seymour, 64, was struck and killed at about 10 p.m. on Friday, July 20, as he walked in the area of West Shuswap and Salish roads. The suspect, 31-year-old Robert Bill, was not tracked down until about six hours later. It’s believed he fled the scene on foot following the collision, turning himself in to police at 4 a.m. on Saturday. Also a TIB member, Bill is facing charges of dangerous driving causing death and impaired driving causing death. He was released from police custody late Saturday after a telephone bail hear-

ing with a justice of the peace in the Lower Mainland. Bill has a history of violence, having been sentenced to 30 days of house arrest following a domestic assault conviction in 2008. Eight years earlier, he pleaded guilty following another domestic assault and was placed on a nine-month probation term. He was also ordered to pay nearly $1,100 in restitution after a mischief conviction in 2002. Kamloops Rural RCMP seized Bill’s vehicle following Seymour’s death. Bill is slated to make his first court appearance on the latest charges on Aug. 20. Seymour’s death came less than a week after his cousin, 29-year-old Jesse Seymour, was killed during a knife fight at a downtown Kamloops house party. Torbin Alec, also a 29-year-old band member, is in custody facing a second-degree murder charge in relation to the July 15 stabbing death. He’s expected back in court next month. X See THREE A5

Ajax serves up 3D model of mine site, circa 2035 By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

The communityrelations manager for Ajax thinks the latest illustration of the openpit mine proposed for south of Aberdeen will “show [people] we’re not hiding anything.” The first of two planned scale models of the Ajax site is now on display at the mine’s Seymour Street office, Norman Thompson told KTW. It will also be up for viewing at Ribfest this

August and at community workshops slated for the fall. The $8,000, twometre-by-1.2-metre physical model shows the mine as it would look in 2035, in the final years of its lifespan. “It’s to scale, so here’s what it is,” Thompson said. “We’re showing people — here’s the pit, here’s where the waste rock facility, the tailings facility is going to be.” Thompson said Ajax chose to show the mine at a point when the pit is

said. “You want to give people the perspective . . . so they can have some sight of what’s going to be to happening over the next 25 years.”

The model also shows some reclamation work planned for the site. By 2035, the mine’s eastern waste-rock area is shown as being completely reclaimed, while Thompson said the sides of northern waste rock pile and the tail-

ings storage area will be reclaimed as the project goes along. The boundaries of Kamloops are also shown on the model, with the city marked in light gray. A second model of the mine site is still on the way. That one will be a computerized, “Google Earth-style” display, Thompson said, which will also show what the mine will look like five, 10 and 20 years into its life. “You can literally

land at a location and do a 360 to see what your view is at different areas in the city,” he said. The second model will likely be up on Ajax’s website in two months. This is the second 3D rendering of the mine Ajax has released this year. An earlier animated video of the site drew criticism from Kamloops city council and mine critics for being difficult to comprehend, sparking calls for a physical rendering of the site.

Mining party day at New Afton Public invited to Sept. 16 celebration at mine site By Andrea Klassen STAFF REPORTER andrea@kamloopsthisweek.com

With its first truckload of concentrate now off to buyers, the developers of the New Afton mine site just west of Kamloops are ramping up both production and party plans. New Golds is inviting about 3,000 people to visit the site for a community fun day on Sunday, Sept. 16. “We want to honour the community and we want to thank them for helping us over the last little while and being able to get this place into production,” said New Golds spokesperson Korah DeWalt. “We want them to have the opportunity to come to site, see what we’ve done, be able to ask questions if they have any and just to give back to the community.” The event, which will run from 11

a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature displays and demonstrations on the mine’s operations, as well as information about the work local contractors have done at the site. There’s also a lineup of live entertainment planned, as well as a ribboncutting ceremony and clowns and games for children. DeWalt said the mine is also planning to have several food vendors on-site, offering free food to guests throughout the day. Because space at the New Afton site is limited, registration for the event is required and will be capped at about 3,000 people. The deadline to sign up for the event is Wednesday, Aug. 22. To keep parking off-site, guests will get to the mine site using one of several free park-and-ride shuttles scattered around the city.

Crash claimed city man A Kamloops man is dead after a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 5A on Friday, July 20. Kamloops Rural RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said emergency crews were called to a portion of the highway near Napier Lake, about 20 kilometres south of Kamloops, just before 3:30 p.m. after a motorist noticed skid marks leaving the roadway. Fire crews located a truck about 150 feet down an embankment. The vehicle’s driver, identified by the BC Coroners Service as 18-year-old Victor Daniel Charlie, was found dead inside.

B.C. Liberals declare preconditions for new pipelines By Jeff Nagel BLACK PRESS jnagel@surreyleader.com

The B.C. government is demanding extensive pipeline and coastal tanker safeguards and a bigger share of cash benefits for the province and First Nations as preconditions for considering any new oil pipeline. The announcement on Monday, July 23, applies not just to Enbridgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Northern Gateway pipeline proposal across northern B.C. to Kitimat, but also to the proposed twinning of Kinder Morganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s existing Trans Mountain pipeline that diagonals southwest through B.C. and Kamloops and runs through the Lower Mainland to a Burnaby terminal. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t tacit approval of the project,â&#x20AC;? Environment Minister Terry Lake said, referring to Northern Gateway, which is further along in the development process. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These are the

minimum conditions we require in order to consider support.â&#x20AC;? Both projects would greatly increase the ability of oil companies to export crude oil through B.C. and via tanker to Asia, reducing reliance on the U.S. market. The provincial government has found itself caught between a public deeply concerned about spill risks and enormous pressure from Alberta and the federal government to allow a new westward outlet for Canadian oil. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want a fair share of the benefits in order to be considered partners in a project like this,â&#x20AC;? Lake said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Given that British Columbia would shoulder 100 per cent of the marine risk and a significant portion of the landbased risk, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t feel the current approach to sharing these benefits is appropriate.â&#x20AC;? Lake did not spell out what B.C.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s price on

royalty sharing would be, but said that would rest on discussions between Premier Christy Clark and the prime minister and premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan. B.C. wants Ottawa to insist industry provide a bigger marine spill response â&#x20AC;&#x201C; up from the current 70,000-barrel capacity to something closer to the 300,000-barrel spill response mandated by Alaska. The government also noted Alaska requires cleanup crews to reach a spill site within 72 hours, while Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current 72-hour also allows travel time to reach a site, potentially adding days to a response. The province also envisions some sort of levy charged on each barrel of oil shipped that would â&#x20AC;&#x201D; as is done in Washington state â&#x20AC;&#x201D; fund cleanup responses. said B.C.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s insistence on greater aboriginal participation and compliance with their rights does not extend to a First Nations veto over new pipelines. Lake said B.C. canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t simply make a yes-orno decision on a project like Enbridge right now because the federal National Energy Board review is still unfolding and the project is evolving along the way. He noted Enbridge last week committed to up to $500 million in further safety upgrades

to Northern Gateway â&#x20AC;&#x201D; including thicker pipe walls than previously proposed as well as more around-the-clock spill monitoring staff along the route. B.C.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s five preconditions are successful completion of the federal environmental review; a world-leading marine oil spill prevention, response and recovery system; world-leading land-spill prevention and response measures; the addressing of aboriginal and treaty rights, including First Nation participation and benefits; and a â&#x20AC;&#x153;fair shareâ&#x20AC;? of the fiscal and economic benefits of a proposed heavy oil project that reflects the elevated risk to B.C. B.C. is just 10 months away from a provincial election that could elect the NDP, which opposes Northern Gateway under any circumstances, but has yet to define a position on the Trans Mountain expansion.

Just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, July 22, police and fire crews were called to a single-vehicle crash at the intersection of McGill Road and Columbia Street in Sahali. A Chevrolet Cobalt had collided with and sheared off a light standard. The driver of the vehicle escaped injury, but a male passenger had to be removed with the jaws of life. He was taken to Royal Inland Hospital with non-life-threatening shoulder injuries. Police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and they will likely forward drunk-driving charge recommendations — including impaired driving causing bodily harm — to the Crown.

Terrible teen trio tripped up A cache of stolen property was seized by police after a trio of teens was arrested early Sunday morning (July 22) in a Sahali residential neighbourhood. At about 3:20 a.m., Kamloops Mounties were called to the area of Bestwick and Arrowstone drives after a neighbour called to report teenagers breaking into vehicles. The three youths, between 15 and 17 years of age, were taken into custody. Found in their possession, police say, was stolen property from two known vehicle break-ins. Investigators also found additional property believed to have been from previous thefts, along with a small amount of marijuana. The teens’ parents were called and the youths will likely face charges of theft and possession of stolen property.

Sedric’s? Three years later, we are still driving to Vernon

E MADE THE hour-and-fifteenminute drive to Vernon a couple of weeks ago and plan to make a few more such day trips before Labour Day. The Atlantis Waterslides was the destination, quite simply the best place to be when the mercury is in the high 20s or low 30s and the sun is steaming down on roasting skin. The waterslides at Atlantis offer everything that is right about a family-friendly attraction — and, on each visit, never fail to bring the debacle that is Sedric’s to the forefront of this mind. Atlantis offers surprisingly affordable pricing (at the gate and at the concession stand), a fantastic layout featuring picnic tables, umbrellas, paths and lots and lots of grass, and, of course, an array of waterslides to thrill everyone in the family. And, if the weather turns cold, there is always the giant hot tub to warm you up. It really is a regional gem — and one that would be perfect for Kamloops, considering the Tournament Capital is generally hotter than Vernon during the spring and summer. Alas, the closest we ever came to seeing a world-class waterslides complex rise was at a slick presentation at Thompson Rivers University a few years ago. The who’s-who of the city’s political and business elite were at the announcement that featured a stateof-the-art presentation that boasted the impending arrival of Sedric’s

MUSINGS Water Park anchoring an assortment of attractions — including a hotel and an ice arena with a, wait for it, retractable roof. Of course, we all know now the entire scheme was a lark perpetrated for reasons unknown to the great unwashed. The presentation did take place right before the provincial election and did include such catchphrases as “We refuse to take part in the recession!” — leading one businessman in Kamloops to call me and suggest the entire spectacle was a campaign push for the B.C. Liberals. We do know one of those delivering the outrageous (in hindsight) plans was Thomas Aubrey, a man known well for pie-in-the-sky proposals that are no more rooted in reality than Bigfoot and Ogopogo. In the latest KTW’s annual Where Are They Now? series, published just seven months ago, we revisited the Sedric’s saga and asked Doug Wittal, a respected developer in Kamloops who, along with Aubrey, was proposing the Sedric’s dream, what had happened.

Wittal told us he still wanted to see some kind of water park rise in the city, albeit at a smaller scale, and was hoping to have the wheels in motion some time this year. Well, it’s July and we are still driving to Vernon. However, any time a kid asks me about Sedric’s and every time I recall how excited so many children became when learning of the grandiose plans, the more I seethe and feel the perpetrators of the Sedric’s scam should be forced to apologize to each and every one of those innocent faces.

Playland does it right The cost of living is high and keeps on rising. From gas prices to increases in almost every facet of services we need to live, it has become difficult for many to simply make ends meet. How refreshing, therefore, to find an institution that decides against gouging the customer. I refer to Playland, that venerable patch of fun in east Vancouver, right next to Highway 1. Taking the kids there for a day last week was a profoundly enjoyable experience — and not only because we were able to soar 210 feet in the air and swing around at 70 km/h. That was fun — as was the fact adults were admitted at half-price with their kids and parking was free. News on the street lately has been pretty grim. Twelve people shot to death in a Colorado movie theatre less than a week ago. Two people, including a 14-yearold girl, killed at a Toronto house party, just weeks after two died in a shooting at the same city’s Eaton Centre mall. Closer to home, four people — including three from the same family — died after a mudslide swept through Johnsons Landing in rural B.C. on July 12. Last week, a young German Shepherd died after being left in a Vancouver dumpster. And, in Kamloops, a trio of tragedies within days of each other involving a fatal stabbing, a fatal hit-and-run and a fatal car accident. The tragic and heart-wrenching — and, sadly, incomplete — list is enough to make one’s head spin; to make some question what is going on in their world, in their community and even in their neighbour’s backyard. It may even give some pause; hesitation to do things — like go to a new movie, for example — that normally would be done without a second thought, for fear of being added to that ugly list. Tragedy, we know, is not a new thing. It is seen, heard, photographed, shared, tweeted and debated every day. It can be accidental or the result of incomprehensible intent. It leads to front-page newspaper stories, headlined television broadcasts, basedon-fact movies and bestselling biographies. But, amidst all the pain and anger and frustration of the senselessness, should we stop living our daily lives? It may seem like a good idea, at least in the blurred aftermath. After all, no one person or community is immune to senseless tragedy. Why not lower the odds where possible? To say that taking that stance would be a greater tragedy than all the deaths of recent days would sound ridiculous. But, there’s no question that actually taking that stance would only compound what has happened. It would show those who perpetuate such acts that they are indeed powerful. It would teach our children to be afraid — and there is nothing to gain from that. There may not be any good in what has happened of late. But, why make it worse?

Spanking is not OK Clark’s silence on Editor: Re: The July 19 letter by Glen Alan Powell (‘Not all spankings of children constitute abuse’). To think that hitting a child is OK in any form is just plain archaic. I was spanked all the time as a child, and hit and belittled — all of which left me with deep emotional scars that took me a great deal of my adult life from which to recover. Hitting a child is not OK. It is abusive. I have three beautiful children

and I have never hit or spanked any of them. There are lots of ways to discipline children, but I have found the most effective is to treat them with dignity, respect and love. As a general rule they will respond in kind.

Enbridge good for B.C. Editor: Premier Christy Clark is right to be cautious in what she says publicly about the proposed Enbridge oil pipeline. There is a wellestablished environmental and public review process that all projects, including the Enbridge CHRISTY CLARK pipeline, are required to go through. Pre-judging or otherwise pre-empting the outcome of any of these review processes is simply not the signal one wants to be sending to those who are considering making investments in our province, investments that create jobs and economic opportunity. That’s why I strongly agree with the cautious, low-key manner in which Clark has approached the Enbridge pipeline issue. She has handled it responsibly and appropriately, and others who may be considering investments in B.C. have been sent a strong and clear message that the province’s public-review processes are fair and open — and that B.C. is a safe, stable and desirable place to invest. ASK Wellness receives $54K to help youth The federal government has handed over money to a Kamloops organization to be used in helping youth gain employment. The ASK Wellness Centre is receiving more than $54,000 from the Skills Link program to help youth overcome barriers to employment. Skills Link is part of the Government of Canada’s youthemployment strategy. With annual funding of more

Mounties in Logan Lake are looking for metal thieves after more than two-dozen car batteries were stolen from an area transfer station over the weekend. Police were called on Sunday morning (July 22) after a wit-

Revenue from the tax, which adds up to about a million dollars each year, goes directly to Tourism Kamloops marketing efforts. Morris said the increase is due to increased marketing in Metro Vancouver and other parts of the province, as well as the continued strength of sports tourism in the city. While the four-month average works out to four per cent, Morris said the numbers also show a surprising spike in visitors in April. Compared to April 2011, revenue from that month this year jumped nearly 17 per cent. Morris said several tourna-

ments held around that time likely accounted for the jump. While it’s too early for the agency to have an exact count of summer travelers, Morris said reports so far suggest tourism is humming along in the Tournament Capital. “What we’ve heard so far is that we’re doing quite well,” she said. “Again, the tournaments are getting a good complement of people coming in. “The leisure, family travel — we’re hearing anecdotally that is working, that people are coming and using this place as a spot to vacation. “So, we’re fairly confident with the numbers.”

One of Kamloops’ most popular boating spots is once again open to the public. Kamloops RCMP has lifted the final boating bans left over from this summer’s flooding, allowing watercraft to return to the South Thompson River between the Red Bridge and the North Thompson confluence. Mounties had held off on opening that section of the river due to high water levels that made it impossible for standard-sized boats to pass safely under the CN Rail trestle bridge. “The water levels are assessed to be at the minimum safety level for the

normal watercraft,” said RCMP Staff Sgt. Grant Learned. However, bigger boats, or those with elevated towing towers and other equipment that extends above the craft, still may not fit under the bridge, and drivers should use extreme caution when navigating that portion of the river. “If the owner of a craft like that decides that they’re going to navigate through there . . . they could be putting themselves at risk, as well as their passengers and the integrity of their particular watercraft if they were to go charging through there,” Learned said. Wheeling to Colombia The Knights of Columbus is looking to Kamloops residents for help in raising funds to ship a container of 100 wheelchairs and replacement parts to Colombia next January. The Knights raised $16,500 for the container to be sent and some of the local members will be traveling with their spouses to make the delivery. Blizzards forecast this week in Kamloops The forecast for Thursday, July 26, calls for blizzards in Kamloops and throughout B.C. Thursday is the annual Dairy Queen Miracle Treat Day, which raises money for the Children’s Miracle Network and BC Children’s Hospital. During Miracle Treat Day, Dairy Queens in Kamloops and across B.C .will donate proceeds from every Blizzard sold to BC Children’s Hospital, a member of the Children’s Miracle Network — a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals. Last year, participating Dairy Queen locations in B.C. raised $348,735 for BC Children’s Hospital. The province has announced it will allow diners to bring their own wine to restaurants to drink with meals. Rich Coleman, the minister of Energy and Mines who is also in charge of liquor branch policy, said the policy will be voluntary, noting and restaurants may charge corkage fees to customers who take advantage of the policy. “We’ve provided restaurant owners with a great opportunity to create a new type of dining experience,” Coleman said. Establishments that adopt the policy will still be responsible if the wine is served to minors or if drinkers are overserved. At this time, there’s no plan to adopt bringyour-own-beer policies or allow diners to bring a bottle of vodka or rum along to dinner.

Fossil site gets heritage tag A world-renowned fossil site 13 kilometres east of Cache Creek has been dedicated a provincial heritage site. The B.C. government announced the designation for the McAbee fossil site on July 19. As part of the designation, the fossil beds will be protected from development and man-

The area was once the site of an ancient lake and was home to a wide variety of insects, plants, fish and birds. As part of the designation, a conservation plan for the area is in the works, which should be completed by mid2013. According to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources, the plan will look at future uses for the site and how to balance recreational uses of the area with educational and research interests.

Red Cross collecting donations for victims highway onto Pleasant Valley Road when it was T-boned by a newer Nissan Sentra. The four people in the Buick were all taken to hospital with various injuries. CPR was performed on a male victim the entire trip to the hospital, but he died. The driver of the Nissan received minor injuries. The RCMP are also investigating a fatal motorcycle accident near Falkland on July 16. The incident occurred on the Chase/ Falkland Road and the operator of the motorcycle was from Courtenay

The Canadian Red Cross is collecting donations to help those affected by the landslide in Johnsons Landing. Kimberley Nemrava, B.C. director for the Canadian Red Cross, said donations will be used to provide basic needs to people who were evacuated following the July 11 landslide. The non-profit organization can provide people with food, clothing and shelter, as well as other essentials. Since the landslide, Red Cross has operated a resiliency centre in Johnsons Landing to support people affected by the disaster.

“The resiliency centre is a place people can come and find out what type of aid is available, and talk to case workers about what they experienced and receive support,” Nemrava said. When contributing to Red Cross, a donor can request the money be earmarked for Johnsons Landing or ask that it go into a general disaster relief fund. “By choosing the general fund, it means if the money isn’t needed specifically for Johnsons Landing, it will be used for other cases that may not be in the news as much, where people still need the same type of humanitarian response,” Nemrava said. L GUSHTA will tell you pin-seeking is not reserved for golfers — it’s a horseshoes thing, too. The 76-year-old Kamloops resident won the elder men’s B title at the national horseshoes championships, held from July 11 to July 14 in Saskatoon. His accomplishment might have soared under the radar if it wasn’t for his wife, Anne. “It’s my wife that phones the newspapers and tells them, ‘Hey, my husband just won the Canadian championships. I want somebody to know about this.’” Gushta was transferred to Vancouver from his Canadian

National Railway post in Winnipeg in 1958. He moved to Kamloops in 1960 and caught on with Weyerhauser. He worked at the pulp mill for 33 years and retired in 1989. Horseshoes became a part of Gushta’s life in 1979, when his motherin-law introduced him to the game. “I started playing and I got better and better and better, and I kind of enjoyed it,” he said. Gushta won his first provincial title — in the men’s D division — in 1995. He has since won

two men’s provincial B titles and a provincial men’s C championship. He also finished second in the men’s A division at provincials in 1999. Gushta made the jump to the elders’ division last year. Reserved for those 65 and older, pitchers in the elders’ division throw at a pin 30 feet away, as opposed to 40 feet in the men’s category. Horseshoe throwers are graded on their ringer percentage. At nationals, 55.9 per cent of Gushta’s throws hit the mark. “At the end, my percentage was higher than half of the A gang’s,” said Gushta, who will make the jump to the elder men’s A division in 2013. “I had a really

good weekend.” Gushta posted a 12-2 record. Don Courville of Alberta placed second with an 11-3 mark. The Winnipeg product said he has enjoyed the spotlight of late, if only because it’s drawn attention to the Kamloops Horseshoes Club. “Our club is not doing too good membership-wise,” Gushta said. “I think we’ve got about 12 people. “Kamloops never was that much of a horseshoes town, but we had as high as 20 at one time.” The club, located on River Street, has Al — and Anne — to thank for much of its recent ink. “I was just so proud of him,” Anne said.

The Malone’s on 8th saga has come to an end — and the Maywoods’ dream is coming true. Darren and Maria Maywood, along with Andrew and Lisa Watson, have purchased the Eighth Street building in North Kamloops and will be turning it into No Limits Fitness Centre. “We got it for a smoking deal,” said Maria, who operates No Limits Fitness Training at her Saddleback Drive home. “It needs a lot of love, but what a great building.” The Maywoods and Watsons have big plans for their new 20,000-square-foot digs: A gym, yoga and Zumba studios, a spa and wellness centre, seniors’ activities, beginner weightlifting classes, a coffee, juice and supplement bar and — in a decision that will likely have the Kamloops squash community rejoicing — No Limits will feature two refurbished squash courts, one of which will double as a racquetball and wallyball court. There are plans to rent space upstairs to massage therapists and physiotherapists. Maria said there have also been conversations with Chad Freeman, owner of Diamond Mixed Martial Arts,

who might also move into the space. “We’re trying to do something epic,” Maria said. “We have some great investors and people who believe in us.” Andrew Watson is the former president of Voda Computer Systems Ltd. Calgary-based Graycon Group Ltd., an IT consulting firm, acquired Voda last year and Watson became manager of Graycon’s B.C. region. “He’s got the business experience,” Maria said of her business partner. “We’ve got the fitness end of it covered.” Maria is known in the community for her Femsport exploits and she “loves extreme and advanced athletes,” but the gym will cater to more than just the elite. “We are going to try and have a little bit of everything,” she said. Nothing is written in stone, Maria said, but gym memberships will likely cost about $40 per month. Patrons will be able to purchase bundle packages that include the use of all of No Limits’ amenities. Maria said she hopes No Limits will be open by December, but made no guarantees. “It’s so friggin’ exciting,” she said. “Our dreams are finally coming true.”

In this series of weekly columns in KTW, Bilton will cover 10 of the more common faults golfers face and tell you how to fix them. Readers will also have an opportunity to win two rounds of golf at The Dunes each week by submitting an answer to the skilltesting question asked each week. Bilton’s system is unique in that he has a lot of room for individual differences that allows his instructors to use their own creativity. There are many ways to achieve a good golf swing and play golf well, but history has show all good players share the same core fundamentals. Conversely, virtually no golfer has reached maximum potential by playing golf outside of these fundamentals. From new golfers to lowhandicap players, the Bill Bilton Jr. Golf Academy offers programs segmented to match each player’s skill level, speaking to the needs of beginners looking to discover their game, core players looking to devel-

LESSON #8 Fault: Undisciplined practise Fault: Undisciplined practise. You are putting in time on the range and you have had some professional golf lessons, yet you are not improving. Whenever I am walking up and down the range or peer over from my golf academy there are a lot of common faults I see from golfers. The most obvious: The practice green is empty and the range is full. Arguably, the short game is more than 60 per cent of the game, yet practiced less than 10 per cent of the time. I also see the big clubs — driver and 3-wood — in action and little attention to the scoring clubs or other shots hit during a round. Finally, I rarely see a player practise with a swing station to train alignment or warm up by stretching. Quantity of practise is far less important than quality

of practice. Most players can find 30 to 60 minutes of weekly practise time, so let me explain what you should be doing to get the most out of your time. Before stepping foot on the practice area, you can work on some stretching and drills without a ball at home. When at the course, split your time equally between the long game and the short game. Start by putting two clubs on the ground, parallel to each other, about two feet apart so you can manage your body alignment while practising. Warm up by hitting some wedges, then move to a midiron and work purely on technique and drills. Finally, play three holes on the range. Imagine and visualize any hole you want to play and play it from tee to green. You can make it as easy or as difficult as you want.

Water left, out-of-bounds right and a narrow fairway would be my choice off the tee, then a second shot over a creek to a well-bunkered and elevated green. Now you can practise your pre-shot routine and your visualization, and train yourself to swing in a pressure situation. The second half of your practice time should be spent on putting, chipping, pitching and sand play, with the emphasis on putting. Remember, the more realistic you make your practice session, the easier you will find it to take your game to the course.

NE OF THE REALLY GREAT THINGS ABOUT SUMMER IS FINALLY BEING ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE STUDIO AND DO SOME PAINTING OUTDOORS. Who wants to work inside on a beautiful summer day? Plein-air painting makes us get out of the house and forces us to do a bit of walking, hiking and breathe in some fresh air. The objective of painting in the field is to enjoy the experience of painting and to see and feel the world with visual acuteness. This experience is different from working with photographs in the studio. The studio is filled with comforts and time to pull the painting to completeness. The wilderness is ruled by chaos and time limitations. Plein-air painting is more about the activity of painting than the product of the actu-

al experience. Once you have found your inspiring location, whether it be the backyard, garden, street scene or wilderness spot, make yourself comfortable and really drink in the scene. Make a visual meal out of the shapes, light,

colour, movement, smells and sounds that are going on around you. Listen to what your eyes are telling you and then allow your mind to form a composition. This is when the paints come out. The painting media is unimportant.

I prefer using watercolours and gauche when painting on location because they are non-toxic, easy to transport and set up and are quick to dry. I generally make multiple paintings with a large stack of paper on my lap. On occasion, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll go

outside with my acrylics and bring along my field easel, stretched canvas, large case of paints, half a dozen brushes and large quantities of water. I know other artists who embark on massive camping trips with their large canvases strapped onto their cars,

multiple easels, buckets of oil paints, varnishes, thinners and turpentine, along with the regular array of brushes, rags and perhaps a canoe. Of course, sometimes a pencil and a sketch pad will work just fine. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s up to the artist. Plein air painting is

about seeing. Because the scene is kinetic in nature, artists must paint quickly. The best place to start is blocking-in large areas, forming a composition and then finding the light, colour, line and tone. X See PEARCE B2

Connecting with the scene is paramount; you are a part of it, therefore allow the brushstrokes to express emotion. Let your inner self speak. In the studio, I will hit a point in my painting where it feels finished. With plein-air painting there is often no real finishing. Sometimes the weather may change or

the scene may change or you might run out of paint or time. The best way to deal with this dilemma is not to be too worried about the idea of creating a finished a painting. Instead, attach yourself to the process of painting and, when there is no more to say within that piece, it is done. Some artists will take their plein-air paintings home and work on them some

more in the studio; others will not touch them at all, claiming the need to keep the purity of the painting. As for me, it doesn’t really matter what happens to the painting one way or another. Sometimes they are good, sometimes they’re not.

It’s not every play that’s at its best when everyone on stage is shrieking, flailing or both, but that’s definitely true of the first of this year’s two X Fest offerings. James and the Giant Peach, which opened July 18 in Prince Charles Park, has a lot going on — maybe not surprising, given the characters include evil aunts, giant bugs, mysterious magical men and sharks There’s rapping, singing, spoken word, a revolving stage and, of course, a giant — and only sometimes deadly — peach. But the show’s best moments are those where its energetic, rubber-limbed cast get to bust out the physical comedy.

An underwater octopus battle that really doesn’t accomplish much in terms of the plot has no right to be as funny as it is. A mostly silent scene where Earthworm (Dusan Magdolen) acts as bait for a flock of seagulls only gets better with repetition. And any time the giant peach that most of the show is set in or on top of rolls, takes flight, or crashes to earth, you’re promised at least a few moments of flailing, shrieking comedy. Costume designer Marian Truscott deserves a hat tip of her own here, as does set designer Mark Anderson. Dressing a cast of insects can’t be the easiest task, but it’s clear from the beginning who’s a centipede, who’s a grasshopper and who’s a slavering,

hungry rhinoceros. Ditto for the set, which finds interesting ways to work with the play’s bigger challenges (that whole harnessing seagulls bit, again) and manages to cram in a few extra jokes by virtue of its spinning platform. Alternately goofy, silly, weird and touching, James and the Giant Peach is a solid offering for a night out

with the kids. And at a breezy 90 minutes, including intermission, the show wraps up before any but the youngest of audience members have fallen asleep in the grass in front of the stage. X Fest runs at 7:30

A main project of the Kamloops Communities in Bloom Committee is to enhance the Red Bridge as it symbolizes the history being celebrated during this Bicentennial year, Two Peoples, Two Rivers, 200 Years. The Lorne Street entrance now has a xeriscape garden, and both a heritage recognition plaque provided by the City of Kamloops Heritage Commission and a bench donated by Kamloops KIA are installed. Improved signage and kiosks with the 125 year history of the first Kamloops bridge are being prepared for the Lorne St. entrance and Pioneer Park. A final goal is to illuminate the bridge at night with red solar powered LED lights enhancing the panoramic view of Kamloops from the ground and the air. The Committee is now seeking public donations to complete the Red Bridge Enhancement Project. The Heritage Legacy Fund of British Columbia provided a grant for panels on two kiosks describing the bridge’s history. Another grant from the Canada Heritage: Building Communities through Arts and Heritage will partially fund one kiosk but more funds are needed to build another kiosk and light the Red Bridge. The project is supported by City Council, Parks Department, Kamloops Museum and the Tk’emlúps te Secwepémc Band. Consultation with the Area Bridge Manager is ongoing as the bridge is owned and maintained by the Province. The Red Bridge is a vital part of Kamloops’ history. Before the first Red Bridge was built in 1887, ranchers transported their cattle and grain on a dangerous raft pulled by a canoe. Why was it necessary to build a second bridge in 1912 and the third and current bridge in 1936? Why is it called the Red Bridge? Why was the bridge saved from demolition in 1968? These and other questions will be answered on the kiosks attracting both locals and tourists to the downtown area.

Larry Frank passed away quietly in the loving presence of his wife Louise and his sister Donna on July 16, 2012. Larry was born on July 31, 1946 in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. Larry worked on the railroad for 35 years with CN Rail. Larry truly enjoyed spending time with is wife and family boating, camping and many family gatherings at their home. Larry had a smile that made all who met him feel very welcome and as if they had known him for a lifetime.

John William Carson was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 13, 2012. He leaves behind his soul mate and love of his life and best friend of 47 years Coleen. He is survived by his children and grandchildren whom he absolutely adored. Cal; Derek, Cody, Kyle, and Sheldon Carson, Melody (Gary); Paul (daughter Jaynee) and Brittany, Rhonda (Dan); Jordan Cassidy Barrett and Connie Carson. Other surviving family members in Ontario include: Uncle Billy and Aunt Shirley and their children and his sister Beatrice. In the USA, his family extended to sister and brother in laws and nieces and nephews. His loss will also be felt by the many friends he had. John’s working career took him from logger to cowboy to rancher to carpet layer to miner. In 2002, after retiring from Highland Valley Copper; he went to Kemess Mines as an equipment trainer and then started C & C Equipment Safety Training in 2008. He certainly enjoyed working with the business clients and associates he had and the many friends that had been acquired through the company relations. John was a hard working man who liked a little golf on the side with Coleen but always kept the love for his family and Lord ﬁrst.

The food value of shiners is significant because it means Harmon Lake trout can grow big. Reports of trout from one to three kilograms (two to six pounds) are common.
