CLINT HEINE ... the 2010 great race champion regained the title in Sunday’s tough conditions.

The great race was a little wetter than most years, but that didn’t slow down dozens of highperformance bathtubs. Clint Heine of Errington won the Great International World Championship Bathtub Race on Sunday in Nanaimo for the second time in three years. Heine was able to catch up and pass Brandon Leigh in Departure Bay and made it to the finish-line bell 15 seconds ahead of the runner-up. Defending champion Nathan Barlow finished in third place just as a downpour came and increased the degree of difficulty for the remaining tubs. Heine and Leigh were neck and neck around the Winchelsea Islands. Leigh was able to pull away a little at that point, but then ran out of fuel. As he

Boat towed to shore for fuel after mayday call

Tuesday, July 24, 2012 Nanaimo News Bulletin

Little trouble during tubbing festivities

BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

Marine search and rescue volunteers are reminding boaters to always carry safety equipment such as radios, anchors, spare gas and an alternate means of powering the boat after a rescue near Departure Bay Friday. Gordie Robinson, coxswain with the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue’s Nanaimo station, said a mayday call came in around 11 a.m. Friday for an eight-metre motor boat drifting toward the rocks on Five Fingers Island near Departure Bay. “They ran out of gas,” he said. “It was their first time in the boat. I gather they were probably freaking a bit because they didn’t have an anchor, so they didn’t have anything to stop them from drifting towards the rocks.” Seven volunteers responded to the call and towed the couple to shore to refuel. The owners, from Seattle, were on a holiday in Canadian waters for the boat’s maiden voyage. Robinson said the couple did have a radio, but did not have spare cans of gas, an anchor or an auxiliary motor. “You don’t exactly pull two cans out and start paddling a 26-foot boat,” he said. “An extra engine would have helped.” Steve Jackson, the station’s spokesman, said the season has been slow so far for volunteers, with three incidents in June and four incidents so far in July – normally the station gets at least twice that many calls. “We’re actually down quite a bit in rescue missions,” he said. “The weather hasn’t been nice up until lately.” reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Little trouble of any kind stirred a calm bathtub weekend in Nanaimo. Turnout for evening events was relatively low for a marine festival weekend. Police said attendance was even low for the beer gardens, held Friday night. Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, said about 30 people were taken to cells at Nanaimo RCMP detachment Saturday night, mostly for liquor-related offences. Most were held until they sobered up enough to be released at various times through the evening. No crime resulted from the race or festivities. “Each year an opera-

of the tumour removed, but left Cory paralyzed from the waist down. He spent 23 days in the spinal unit at Vancouver General before transfer to G.F. Strong rehabilitation centre, where he still is undergoing physiotherapy and learning to live in a wheelchair. The tumour was benign, meaning that chemotherapy isn’t needed. But the costs for Cory to adapt to his new life are mounting and the family is

turning to the community for help. A beer and burger fundraiser is scheduled for Sunday (July 29), 4-9 p.m., at Pipers Pub on Hammond Bay Road. Medical insurance only pays a small part of the $6,000 cost of a new wheelchair and doesn’t cover the estimated $30,000 cost to make their home wheelchairaccessible. Cory, who can’t return to his job as a tow-truck driver, also needs to attend a driving course that teaches him to use hand controls. Melissa is working and caring for their son during the week and visiting her husband on weekends in Vancouver. He’s scheduled for discharge from G.F. Strong in early August. “We don’t like to dwell on the past,” Melissa said. “What’s happened has happened.” Tickets to the beer and burger fundraiser are $15 and available from Desire Tattoo, 1925 Bowen Rd. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

DAILY FLIGHTS FROM ABBOTSFORD

◆ From /1 The choppiest seas on Sunday were around the Neck Point area. Leigh said it was hard to judge the waves there. “It’s basically just trying to stay afloat, stay up, because it’s very easy to hook the nose in the wave and you’re done,” he said. He met that challenge, but then simply ran out of gas at the crucial moment. “It’s an inconvenience, but it happens,” Leigh said. “It eats up a lot of fuel out there when you’re climbing up the front side of a five-foot wave every two seconds.” Heine’s official time was one hour, 19 minutes, 52 seconds, about 10 minutes off record pace. Bill McGuire, commodore of the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society, said the finishing times were impressive considering the weather. “We’re not too far off the world record,” he said. “That augurs well for today’s tubs.” Leigh, who raced a tub that formerly belonged to multiple-time champion Aaron Froats, said he’ll keep trying to finish one place higher. “It’s probably one of the better boats and engines out there. It should be a possibility,” he said. As for the winner, Heine’s victory was an emotional one. At the finish line he got a bit choked up remembering Angus Ross, a sponsor and friend who built Heine’s tub and died of cancer in January. “So it means a lot for me and him and his wife …” said Heine. “The first overall trophy is in his name. He was a longtime tubber; he’s built a lot of tubs for the tubbers.” Including a real good one for this year’s champion. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Restaurateurs like altered wine rules BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

Diners will now be able to bring their own bottle of wine to enjoy at certain restaurants, but local business owners are not anticipating a big change. The province announced the new regulation last week, when it took effect. The change allows people to take a bottle of unopened, commercially produced wine into a licensed restaurant to consume with their meal, to be served in the same manner as wine selected from the menu. Restaurants can choose whether to participate in the Bring Your Own Wine program and the change only applies to establishments with food primary licences. Restaurants can charge a corkage fee and a standard 750-millilitre bottle must be shared by at least two people. Thomas Robertshaw, co-owner of Acme Food Co. on Commercial Street, said it is common practice in many parts of the world and he will participate. “If I don’t have a particular bottle of wine that people want, I’m happy to open it,” he said. “I don’t think it’s going to be coming in droves.” Robertshaw said the markup on wines at Acme is close to the corkage fee, so people won’t really be saving

money, and he anticipates that people would probably only do it for special occasions like an anniversary. Mike Atherton, co-owner of the Firehouse Grill on Victoria Road, also plans to participate and charge a corkage fee if people want to bring in their own wine. “If people don’t like your wine list, but they love your food, this way they’ll be able to come,” he said. “I think it will make people happier. Our wines are pretty cheap anyways. It’s not going to mark down their bill a whole lot.” Atherton doesn’t think that people will choose to bring their own bottle too often – perhaps the odd special occasion such as a wedding rehearsal dinner where people want to sample a wine being served at the wedding or a wine that has special meaning to someone. “I think this is more of a fine dining or big city thing,” he said. “I just can’t see it affecting us that much.” Frank Naccarato, owner of the local Moxie’s Grill and Bar franchise, sees only positives in the regulation. “I don’t see it as a big difference – most of our wines are not marked up that much anyways,” he said. “It’s still a nice thing to have that ability, if you have a favourite bottle of wine. Our focus is always to give you value for your dining experience.” reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Group earns grant for forest preservation

I

RESIDENTS HOPE to maintain Pioneer Forest as parkland. BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN

A community group will be able to continue its fight to save Pioneer Forest in the city’s north end after being approved for a legal grant. Friends of Pioneer Forest was formally created on July 8, complete with a constitution, bylaws and board of directors. It formed in response to a recent attempt by the City of Nanaimo and Nanaimo school district to re-designate Pioneer Forest, located at May Bennett Pioneer Park, from parks and open space to neighbourhood. Neighbourhood designation could allow for residential development of the 3.2-hectare tract of forest in the city’s heavily developed north end. That level of organization allowed Friends of Pioneer Forest to look to the West Coast Environmental Law’s Environmental Dispute Fund for the

grant, which will enable it to retain the services of Patrick Canning, an environmental lawyer based in Tofino. The Environmental Dispute Resolution Fund provided $3,644 to assist with legal aid. “It’s quite complex,” said Dominic Jones, spokesman for Friends of Pioneer Park. “But the brunt of it is we’re saying it is a park and was always required to be a park. The city and school district are saying they’ve got information that says otherwise.” Jones said the group’s next step is to understand from Canning what the community’s options are going forward and what legal strategy it can pursue – with the hope it can be something in conjunction with the city and school district. Canning said he believes the land was never intended to be used for private gain or as residential housing. “Now we can do the work to make sure it stays the way it was intended for the benefit of the people of Nanaimo,” said Canning, in a release. In 1984, the province sold all

of May Bennett Pioneer Park to the city for $1 under the condition the property be used for public recreation. In 1997 the city sold Pioneer Forest to the school district for $800,000. The school district considered building an elementary school on the site, but later deemed it unnecessary. When the property was transferred, the Ministry of the Environment cancelled the Crown grant on the property to allow for recreational opportunities. Jones said Friends of Pioneer Forest is working to provide a solution for all parties involved, though he admitted that if it does turn into a legal showdown that more funding would need to be sought. The Environmental Dispute Fund is the only source of environmental legal aid in B.C. for individuals and community groups. It funds the cost of environmental lawyers and scientific experts and has granted more than $4 million to communities across B.C., supporting more than 500 environmental cases since 1989. reporter2@nanaimobulletin.com

far back as 1988. The ministry declined further comment while the case is before the courts. Halvorson’s landmark case is being handled by the law firm Grant Kovaks Norell. It’s delaying its fees pending the case’s outcome. “It is simply unfair that the province has received money from the federal government to cover these individuals, then has refused to pay the physicians who treated them,” McGill Medical School grad Halverson said. “We want to right that wrong with this lawsuit.” Provincial internal documents, he says, estimate that, at times, up to 363,000 eligible B.C. residents were not being insured by MSP due to unpaid premiums. Doctors nevertheless provided treatment to uninsured residents at considerable personal cost, said Halvorson. “As an ER doctor, if they have something wrong with them I’m ethically bound to treat them. Funding was provided by the federal government to cover all B.C. residents,” he said. “The government gave funds to hospitals, but not to doctors if (patients) hadn’t paid their premiums. It struck me this was unprincipled, and just wrong.” The decision of Justice Adair marks a long class-certification process that started in 2000 before Madam Justice Wendy Baker. Baker’s refusal to certify the case was overturned by the Court of Appeal in 2003. Halvorson is the class-representative plaintiff for all class members. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo avoids major upheaval in adult education BY JENN McGARRIGLE THE NEWS BULLETIN

Graduated adults wishing to take high school courses through Nanaimo school district will find that some are no longer free. Since 2007, the province’s Education Guarantee program provided tuition-free courses to adults looking to upgrade their high school education. After consultations with school districts, the province decided in May to limit the program to classes commonly taken as prerequisites for different university and trades programs, such as senior math, science and English courses, or courses that help address skills gaps so that adults can successfully complete senior courses. But all courses are still free for adults who have not graduated from high school and the adult basic education program at Vancouver Island University is not affected. An Education Ministry spokesman said cost curtailment – enrolment increases meant program costs grew from $1.5 million in 2007 to $14 million last year – and the ministry’s focus on kindergarten to Grade 12 were the impetus to change. Scott Saywell, the district’s learning alternatives principal, said the goal of the Education Guarantee program was to allow graduated adults to take courses needed to get into a career or a postsecondary education program for free. The change won’t have much of an impact in Nanaimo, because the district averages between 100 and 150 adults taking courses each year and most only take courses that will continue to be offered free of charge, he said.

Rock solid winner RCMP Staff Sgt. Bruce Wright, left, and reserve constable Kirby Anderson present a prize package to Callum Nixon, 9, Thursday. Nixon is the winner of Nanaimo RCMP’s Name the Boat Contest to christen its new rigid hull Zodiac. Callum’s suggestion, Justice Rock, was selected from dozens of submission from local K-7 students. The craft was named for Justice Rock, an eight-metre rock in Nootka Sound. Nixon was given a personal flotation device from Harbour Chandler, named honorary captain for a day and taken out for a ride in the Zodiac.

VIU graphics students recognized BY MARILYN ASSAF Trina M’Lot’s graphic design abilities netted the fourth-year Vancouver Island University student with an impressive list of accolades, including a national award and international award of merit. M’Lot, who graduates from VIU’s Graphic Design degree program next year, came up with a winning design for a vegetable seed package. Her design will be published in the November/December issue of Applied Arts, Canada’s leading design magazine. “Getting published in Applied Arts is a big deal in the graphic design world and we’re very proud of Trina’s achievement,” said Nancy Pagé, instructor and co-chairwoman of the Department of Art and Design at VIU. M’Lot also received kudos from the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada, receiving a $1,000 tuition scholarship funded by the Vancouver Island Chapter and sponsor Hemlock Printers. She also received VIU’s President’s Scholarship for

Continuing Students as top student in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and a $1,000 award donated by Terence Fitzgerald. Her seed package design also won a merit award in the student category from the Hiiibrand Awards, an international logo, brand, and packaging competition. Fourth-year graphic design student Laura Timmermans, originally from Ucluelet, also received a $1,000 tuition scholarship from the GDC and sponsor Hemlock Printers. The winner of the $500 Cady Marshall Student Award is VIU graduate Monica Rush. VIU’s graphic design degree program is designed to give students a solid grounding in applied digital graphic design, as well as theory, academics, creativity and communication skills. Students often work on real-world type projects such as annual reports, identity campaigns, websites and on some projects for actual clients. For more information visit www. viu.ca.

“A lot of them are taking biology and some math and English,” said Saywell. “In Nanaimo, 95 per cent will still be covered next year. In some districts this is a big issue because they have thousands of adults taking courses.” The district hasn’t decided what to charge people for courses no longer covered, but Saywell expects it will follow the provincial average price of around $500 per course. Another change to the Education Guarantee program starting in September is that the province will provide 75 per cent of the funding for tuition-free courses up front and the remaining 25 per cent will be handed over on course completion. The following year, only 50 per cent will be provided up front. Completion is defined as a final mark based on a minimum of 65 per cent of total course work attempted. The change is to boost course completion rates – ministry data shows that only about 55 per cent of graduated adults complete courses. As of the end of June, the district had not decided how it would go about recouping the cost if someone dropped out before finishing a course. The ministry also intends to make course material for a number of senior courses available to the public for free through its Open School B.C. website. Jeannie Maltesen, interim dean of career and academic preparation at VIU, said the changes don’t affect the university’s adult basic education program, which is free, because the institution receives its funding through the Ministry of Advanced Education. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Choose safety this summer As anyone who was ever in the water with a dolphin, a shark or marine mammal can easily tell you, human beings are not really made for swimming. We can do it and some of us can even do it quite well – for a human – but it’s not really our natural habitat. That fact should probably be kept in mind this summer as residents head to the lakes, rivers and ocean beaches to cool off. It’s fun to play in the CAUTION water, to dive, to surf, to NEEDED swim, but we should all during make a point of keeping our many typical wits very much about us summertime while we’re doing it. The difference between pursuits. a lovely family day at the beach and a horrifying trip to the morgue can sometimes rest on the smallest, briefest lack of focus. You swim up under the raft and come up too soon, hitting your head, you surf into another person, you jump off a cliff into the water without first checking what’s there – it doesn’t take much. We’ve already had several tragedies in the mid-Island. But it’s not just swimmers who have to be careful. Boaters, too, need to keep their wits about them. That starts with carrying all the necessary safety equipment on board whenever you leave the shore and with using it properly – such as actually wearing your life-jacket instead of using it as a pillow. It should be unnecessary to mention the need to keep water fun and alcohol fun entirely separate, but as we have seen again and again across this country, people in fact do need to be told – or rather, they need to actually pay attention to the many messages to this effect that are already out there. Let’s make sure that when we’re shivering in the rain this fall, we are able to remember having fun in the sun without having to realize that it was the last time we saw a family member alive.

It always makes me a bit sad to come to a particular page in one of my secondary school journals. One of my friends wrote her poem in my journal because we both loved poetry and she was willing to share. That friend died a year later in a tragic accident. She slipped on a cliff face while hiking and fell to her death. I view her poem scrawled in the book with a mixture of happiness and sadness. It’s a reminder of everything we had in common and a unique keepsake that I will never throw away. She had a writer’s gift and I often wonder what she would have done with that gift if she had lived. Pit bulls’ bad reputation undeserved To the Editor, I am writing this letter for the many responsible ‘pit bull’ owners out there. I am a professional, civil servant, law-abiding citizen of British Columbia and a proud, responsible pit bull owner. I take my pit bull everywhere; he is well obedient, very kind, and playful. These descriptive words are from the many people he has met in his young life. Like many of the responsible pit bull owners in this province, we too have socialized our dog positively, taken our time to train, and successfully obtaining his Canine Good Neighbours certificate. Our pit bulls can be seen daily playing with all sorts of dogs, especially small ones. Since his two best friends at home are Pomeranians, he seems to know when to play like a big dog and change his approach when he frolics with the small ones. I know for a fact that there are many pit bulls out in our community that have the

Responsibility for student progress lies with teachers To the Editor, Re: Student progress on f flatline , July 19. When will the teachers accept at least some of the responsibility for the fact that Nanaimo students are not learning the basic skills needed for success and ease of learning in the future? I taught in a system that tested language and mathematical skills in September and then in June, so we could easily evaluate the effectiveness of the programs we were providing. Both areas are easily handled through individual programs that allow more time with students who are behind and challenge the students who find the material easy. Of course, that would require the teachers to acknowledge that they are currently not providing the learning environment for these areas. And I do not mean all teachers, as there are many who do the best they can. Let’s get moving forward on this new initiative from the school board. J. Sharpe Nanaimo

Dogs involved in confrontations are often misidentified as pit bulls, many of which are well-socialized and safe, letter writer says.

same temperament. It is disappointing for me to read and hear about negative situations regarding pit bulls. Sometimes after asking questions, researching the

negative incidents that occur, I find out that it was not even a pit bull that caused harm. What I would like to suggest to the media is for them to practice not labelling the

headlines ‘pit bulls’ of any negative form, but to just state ‘dog’ or ‘irresponsible dog owner causes harm’. I feel strongly that if the media can start posting the names of irresponsible dog owners, then it will put pressure on them to register their dogs appropriately. This will let local animal control keep a better eye on the delinquent. I also from time to time glance through local classifieds under dogs; to my surprise I find many backyard breeders of pit bulls. Real responsible pit bull owners condemn this practice due to so many of these dogs are bred, abused, and given up because irresponsible owners are too lazy to raise them properly. Therefore, society and media embrace this negative belief that all pit bulls are bad. I cannot stress enough that pit bulls are dogs, and irresponsible owners are bad. Darren Lee Nanaimo

Letter writer’s comparison quite valid To the Editor, Re: History offers dose of oilwealth irony, Letters, July 21. I do not find irony in the fact that the fortune and consequently status of a province can, over a certain period of time, change from being a ‘have-not’ province to being a ‘have’ province and vice-versa. But what I find extremely ironic is that a person who apparently knows diddlysquat about geography and contemporary history of the world, (by declaring that Czechoslovakia was part of the former Soviet Union), can make such an apodictic statement that comparing the separation of Quebec and the dissolution of Czechoslovakia is tantamount to comparing apples and oranges. On contrary, such comparison is very valid. While circumstances of separation of any state for whatever reason are inevitably different, separation of Quebec could result, similarly like the separation of Czechs and Slovaks, in a very friendly, fruitful and mutually advantages relation of the two new state entities. Moreover, where the comparison is very valid, is that the separation of Quebec could be done, as was the case in the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, without any bloodshed. And if not for any other than for this reason alone such comparison satisfies the requirement of comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges. George Holecek Nanaimo

Vandalism of trees not entirely surprising To the Editor, Re: Tree vandalism leaves residents ‘flummoxed’, July 21. I can sympathize with whoever vandalized the trees that could be obstructing someone’s view. When you purchase a home with an ocean view, and then a few years later lose your beautiful vista because someone has not kept their trees at a neighbourly height, it tends to be annoying as well as affect your property values. The city does not have any height restrictions on vegetation, however you can build a fence to a height of only six feet. Trees, on the other hand, grow as high as their owners allow them to with absolutely no regard for their neighbours views and property values. I respect a person’s need for privacy, however, privacy can be achieved without obstructing views of the other property

owners in a neighbourhood. A vegetation height-restriction bylaw would certainly solve problems that home owners are encountering and stifle further vandalism. Melody Botten Nanaimo

Voters need to decide our level of freedom To the Editor, We all exchange a small amount of freedom for the security of living within an organized society. Power is given to government for the sole purpose of restricting behaviour that injures others against their will. This limited government is the symbol of a free society. Extending the powers of government beyond that, into matters of personal choice, crosses the line between freedom and tyranny. It is up to us, as voters, to decide how much government involvement we want in our lives, but when making this decision, it is important to keep in mind that if you allow yourself to impose your beliefs on others, through the use of government, you are opening the door for others to impose their beliefs on you. Cuts necessary if departments affected shown to be bloated To the Editor, Re: Science support crucial to society, Saturday Beat, July 21. Toby Gorman would have us believe that because of budget cuts in areas he deems critical to a successful society, these departments are being eliminated. Does he base this opinion on any facts other than information being put forth by those likely to be personally affected by these cuts? Is it possible that the departments referred to are already bloated and these cuts will simply remove some of the fat and require more efficiencies to be found? As for the precision some of these ‘sciences’ bring to society, ask the commercial fishing fleet their opinion of the science behind the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. It is not unusual for these scientists to be surprised from one year to the next where all these returning salmon come from or why the salmon return is so low. The collapse of the cod fishery on the east coast was also under the watchful eye of these scientists. The assertion is made that we all can agree that climate change is real; fair enough. Now what is offered that climate change will inevitably take the course being predicted? Given that fossilized tropical palms have been found in Nanaimo, I am sure we can all agree to the fact that the climate does indeed change. If weather forecasting accuracy is another example of how much we should rely on this scientific information I would beg to differ. Gorman’s reaction to government cuts is typical of all of us who call on the government for fiscal responsibility provided they do not gore any of our sacred cows. Does he believe that we can simply keep running deficit budgets and keep ever-increasing the size of the national debt? If he doesn’t, perhaps he can offer some suggestions of his own for balancing the country’s books that we can all agree to. In the meantime, suggesting that these government departments are running like welloiled machines at peak efficiency and are not bloated should be supported by more than the opinion of some who might be unemployed as a result. LITERACY SKILLS need to be kept up during vacation.

With summer officially here, parents and children are in the midst of vacation plans. But just because school’s out doesn’t mean anyone should take a vacation from learning. Research shows children who don’t read over the summer lose some of the literacy skills they learned during the year, and have a difficult time adjusting

to school in the fall. Try out these fun activities from ABC Life Literacy Canada to keep skills sharp all season long. ◆ Follow a recipe together and make a dish for a summer picnic. It’s a fun way for a family to practise reading, math and comprehension. ◆ This summer’s Olympic Games offer many learning opportunities. Count the medals Canada receives, research a sport like fencing or map out the city of London. ◆ When travelling in the

car, read signs, billboards and licence plates together and show children how to find a destination using a map. ◆ Head to the beach with a good book. Not only are there some great summer reads out there, but children learn from their parents, so let them catch you reading. ◆ Zoo outings and visits to museums and galleries can be fun and educational. Be sure to read all the descriptions on exhibits and displays. ◆ Send friends and relatives postcards from

different places along the way, or better yet, send one to yourself as a visual reminder of your trip. ◆ Bring some games up to the cottage for a family night. Board games are a fun way to improve literacy skills. ◆ On a rainy day, surf the Internet for information on hobbies or the latest summer movies. ◆ Build a book of memories during a trip. Tape in pictures, souvenir tickets and brochures and ask family members to write in comments and captions.

Hangin’ in there Nicola Hope, 5, hands from a climbing mesh at the Harbourside Playdock in Maffeo Sutton Park. Warm weather has made playgrounds and water parks around the city popular with residents.

Exercise and better health not withstanding, Nanaimo and area residents have one more good reason to run the 6.2-kilometre trail around Westwood Lake. The seventh annual Run for the Mountain takes place Sept. 15, and in the next two months prior to the fundraising event, organizers are placing Saucony key chains somewhere on the course. The person who finds a Saucony key chain and brings it into Frontrunners, at 5767 Turner Rd., wins a pair of Saucony Kinvara shoes and an entry into the Run for the Mountain. You can find out when a Saucony key chain is placed on the course by liking the Run for the Mountain Facebook page. Three shoes/entries will be given away before race day. Run for the Mountain raises funds and awareness for the Nanaimo and Area Land Trust’s work on Mount Benson Regional Park. The last six runs raised more than $30,000. The Wave Babes dragonboat team takes fundraising to a whole other level. Not only do members raise precious funds for the health of women facing breast cancer in the Regional District of Nanaimo, they do so with the environment in mind. Their win-win charitable efforts include the annual Think Pink When You Think Green scrap metal and bottle recycling event at Woodgrove Centre in January, the plant sale and eco fair each May, and ongoing pink bin scrap metal and bottle collections throughout the year at select locations around town. As a result of the hard work, $21,500 was donated to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation for the purchase of equipment that helps detect and treat breast cancer at Nanaimo

Regional General Hospital. The paddlers joined ranks in 2006 and is made up of current or former City of Nanaimo employees. Together, they’ve raised more than $100,000 for the cause. Brenda Rositano, of the hospital foundation, said the Wave Babes have outdone themselves yet again. “Their ingenuity in fundraising and resolve to fight breast cancer is an inspiration to the foundation and on behalf of patients fighting this terrible hardship, we would like to thank the team for their hard work.” Anyone wanting to drop off scrap metal or bottles for recycling can do so at the Wave Babes’ pink scrap metal bin at 333 Tenth St. in Nanaimo, and a smaller pink bin for cans and bottles at the Co-op gas station on Bowen Road. And if patrons of Cob’s Bread in Terminal Park shopping centre mention they are fundraising for the Wave Babes, two per cent of the sale goes toward the team’s fundraising efforts.

arts Queen of the parody Comedian and parody singer Randii Andii celebrates the recording of her favourite songs before hitting the road on tour BY MELISSA FRYER THE NEWS BULLETIN

R

andii Andii doesn’t do bar mitzvahs. And once you hear the first few lines of one of her songs parodying a hit single, you’ll instantly know why. “It’s definitely adult entertainment – I don’t do PG,” Andii said. The Nanaimo performer wrote her first parody about seven years ago for her friends while they were on their way to a music festival in the B.C. Interior. She took the song “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and dirtied it up. She then performed it for her friends at karaoke in a random bar on the road trip. “I just thought it was my friends who had a gross sense of humour,” Andii said. “I was wrong.” She performed with Vikki Smudge, beloved local drag queen, who encouraged Andii to do the parody songs. Andii performed the songs at similar adult-only events, like drag shows, burlesque, plus fundraisers, earning a loyal following of fans. Now she compiled her five favourite – and most requested – parodies into an album, recorded at Broken Spiral Studios in Nanaimo, and celebrates its launch Friday (July 27) at Diners Rendezvous. She puts her own take on Whitney Houston’s Saving All My Love For You; Proud Mary, by Tina Turner; and Sitting on

the Dock of the Bay, by Otis Redding. “I don’t remember the real words to any of the original songs,” Andii said. Others told her something similar. “All they hear in their head is the dirty version.” Andii performed in her high school choir and took musical theatre. She was also in the top 100 in 2007’s Canadian Idol. “I went dressed in drag,” she said. “They cut me – what a surprise.” Inspiration strikes anywhere, and Andii keeps a shoebox of potential songs, with ideas written next to original lyrics. Sometimes the songs work out and other times they fall flat in front of an audience. Like any type of comedy, no matter how much work went into a song or a joke, if the crowd doesn’t like it, it goes into the dust heap, she said. In January, Andii took the plunge and quit her day job, aiming to pursue comedy and entertainment as her career. Her act consists of not only the parody songs, but also stand-up comedy. Her outlandish, over-the-top costumes, hair and makeup could be considered its own act. “I’m like a one-person Vegas show,” she said. This month, she’ll be in Vancouver at Yuk Yuks, which she hopes will be the springboard for a spot with the national chain of comedy clubs. Either way, she hits the road on tour.

I thought it was just my friends who had a gross sense of humour.

Randii Andii’s costumes, hair and makeup are all part of her over-the-top act, which includes comedy and parodies of hit songs. The Nanaimo performer celebrates the release of her album, a collection of her favourite parodies, during an event at Diners Rendezvous July 27.

“[The album launch] is going to kinda be the last thing I do in Nanaimo for awhile,” Andii said. The album launch features Andii, plus some of the people who helped her – or those she helped; Andii often donates her time to fundraisers – along the

way, from comedians, to drag queens to burlesque dancers. Her album will also be for sale. “People love to take a piece of something away from the show,” she said. “For years, people were asking where can I buy this? Where can I download this?”

Randii Andii’s album launch begins at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 and include a signed copy of the album. Please call 250-740-1133 for tickets. For more information on Randii Andii, please visit www. randiiandii.ca. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

The BC Coast Explorer and Marine Trail Guide By John Kimantas Even before he left his post as assistant editor at the News Bulletin, John Kimantas was already exploring the extensive coastline of Vancouver Island. After circumnavigating the Island, Kimantas turned his experiences and photographs into a series of books – and continues to do so with his latest The BC Coast Explorer. The first volume covers the west coast of northern Vancouver Island, from Port Hardy to Bamfield. Inside are the same colourful maps, stunning photography and detailed information that made Kimantas’s earlier books, The Wild Coast, so popular. The author includes activities of all kinds, including diving and hiking, in addition to kayak launch points, safe routes and popular campsites. Using first-hand knowledge, Kimantas includes notto-miss places with details why they remain so special, plus history of the area, such as First Nation villages, history and culture. Kimantas lets the beauty of Vancouver Island speak for itself, inspiring explorers to head out into the rugged landscape and formulate their own journeys and stories. You can’t help but want to feel the sun and wind on your skin after reading this guidebook. – Melissa Fryer Published by: Wild Coast Publishing Available at: Local bookstores List price: $34.95

Wax Mannequin brings his quirky originality to the Diners Rendezvous Aug. 10. For sale will be previous albums, on USB drives sealed in candle busts.

Back catalogue offered in wax busts of singer This summer, strange-folk phenomenon Wax Mannequin once again abandons the trappings of Hamiltonian domestic life in favour of wayward travel. He performs in Nanaimo at Diners Rendezvous Aug. 10 as part of a Western Canada tour to promote his new album No Safe Home. The album is a subdued collection of ethereal and somber folk songs that are rife with the minstrel’s wry wit, morose personal observations, veiled social com-

mentary and uplifting melodic cadences. The tour will also mark an unconventional re-release of Wax’s older material: he will be selling candle busts made in his likeness, each containing his entire collected works – five albums worth of music stored on well-sealed USB drives and embedded in the wax. Wax Mannequin’s show starts at 8 p.m., with doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets $15/advance; $20/ door. Please call 250-740-1133.

sports Timbermen’s playoff hopes dashed I

SR. A BOXLA team falls out of contention.

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

They managed a handful of comeback wins this season, but the Timber men couldn’t come back and save their season. The Coastal Windows Timber men senior A lacrosse team (6-9-1) was eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday following an 11-10 loss to the Burnaby Lakers at Frank Crane Arena. The loss extends a poorly timed slump for the T-men, who are 1-6 since starting the Western Lacrosse Association season 5-3-1. Sunday’s result was disturbingly typical for the T-men lately. “We spot teams too many goals and then we work our tails off to get back in the game and we battle hard and we work hard and then we’ll make mental mistakes,” said Scott Ranger, team captain. In the loss to the Lakers, the T-men allowed eight second-period goals. The visitors had too many easy looks as they found all kinds of time and space in behind Nanaimo’s defence. Down 10-5, the T-men made a goalie switch as Zak Boychuk came in

to relieve Matt King. A third-period comeback attempt fell short as Cody Bremner’s lastditch scoring attempt was stopped. “Where was that team in the second period?” asked Ar t Webster, T-men coach. “You’ve got to play 60 minutes to win a lacrosse game. You can’t just show up here and expect to win … It takes lots of intelligence to play this game, it takes lots of discipline and we have to put it on the table every night.”

We feel bad that we didn’t deliver … It hurts like hell.

In 2010 and 2011 the T-men missed the postseason on a tie-breaker, but this year they won’t be able to make things as interesting as their last two regular-season games will be rendered meaningless. It’s too bad considering the team received “awesome” fan support this season, said Webster. “We feel bad that we didn’t deliver, that we’re not going to the playoffs,” he said. “And it hurts like hell.” ◆ See ‘SENIOR’ /32

DBL squad faces off in best-of-three The best part of lacrosse season has arrived. The Nanaimo DBL Timbermen senior B squad begins playoffs on Wednesday (July 25) as it takes on the Port Moody Thunder in a best-of-three series. “It’s definitely a good test, it could go either way,” said Shawn Swanson, general manager of the T-men. The Thunder (11-7-0-1) won the season series against the Timbermen (13-7) two games to one, but both Port Moody’s wins came way back in early May. In recent weeks Nanaimo has won most of its games and PoMo has played sub-.500 lacrosse. “We’ve got a little bit more experience than they have, which I hope will help,” said Swanson. “But they’re young, they’ve got stamina and they’ve got a couple of the best scorers in the league.” T he DBL men have home-floor advantage, but will play at Frank Crane Arena as ice is going into the Nanaimo Ice Centre. The schedule sets up well for the T-men, as the series doesn’t include any midweek road games. “It allows us to have our full lineup for all three games,” said the GM. GAME ON … Game 1 is Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. Game 2 goes Saturday in Coquitlam and Game 3, if necessary, is Sunday at 6 p.m. at Frank Crane. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

JR. WOMEN place fourth at provincials.

Nanaimo’s junior women were right there with the best in the province, but they weren’t able to finish with a medal. The Nanaimo Island Stone Timber men lacrosse team placed fourth at B.C. Lacrosse provincial championships this past weekend in Nanaimo. The junior women lost Sunday’s bronzemedal game to the N e w We s t m i n s t e r Salmonbellies’ No. 1 team by a 7-1 score. Nanaimo went 1-1-1 in pool play including a win Saturday against the eventual champions, New West No. 2. A 7-3 setback against Coquitlam No. 1 in the semifinals kept the home team out of the gold-medal game. N a n a i m o ’s To n i Angell was chosen as tournament MVP.

Senior A lacrosse squad has some regrets ◆ From /B1 Looking back, there are one-goal losses that proved costly. The team’s struggles also coincided with a busier July schedule following a relatively light June. “The back-to-backto-backs are a little bit tougher, but at this level there’s not an excuse,” said Scott Ranger. “You need to be prepared for every game.” That’s why there are regrets at this stage of

the season when players wish they had no regrets. “We’re there with everyone. It’s such a tight league; anyone can beat anyone,” said Graham Palmer, alternate captain. “It’s just a matter of who puts in a full 60 minutes. The games we lost, we didn’t, and the games we won, we did.” Rang er said it’s “extremely frustrating” to miss the playoffs again this season because he said the

Timbermen should be able to compete with any of the WLA’s playoff-calibre teams. “We’re going to be a really good lacrosse team that’s out of the playoffs because we make bad lacrosse decisions,” he said. “That’s something you can’t teach; you’ve got to gain that through experience. Unfortunately we don’t have time now to make those adjustments.” In Sunday’s loss Ranger scored five

goals to bring his season total to 54, tying his own franchise record. Joel Henry had four goals and Cayle Ratcliff had the other. The Lakers got two goals from Colton Clark, who is from Nanaimo, and two goals from Schuss, a former Timbermen player. The day before, the T-men lost 10-9 to the Coquitlam Adanacs on the Lower Mainland. Ranger had five goals in that one, too, with Henry adding a pair plus three assists. Cory Conway and Bremner were the other scorers, Kaleb Toth had three assists and Boychuk suffered the loss in net. GAME ON … Nanaimo finishes the WLA season with a home-andhome series against the Victoria Shamrocks. Rapids divers sweep podium The Nanaimo White Rapids’ new diving club has seen some immediate rewards for its efforts. The club’s first-ever meet was the North Vancouver Hootenanny earlier this month and all five Rapids divers entered in the competition came away with medals. The greatest coup came in the 13-14year-old boys’ division, where Liam Gilchrist, Nathan Rauwerda and Drayden Goodman swept the podium on both the one-metre and threemetre boards, winning gold, silver and bronze, respectively. Darby Walker won gold on the one-metre board and Jared Houghton took silver on the one-metre and bronze on the threemetre.

Pirates win all four to finish regular season A wet day at the ballpark turned the final games of the season into “swimming races”, said Doug Rogers, Nanaimo Pirates manager. If that’s the case, then the Pirates touched the wall in fine form.

The Hub City Paving Pirates (36-12) won all four of their home games Saturday and Sunday at Serauxmen Stadium, defeating the Vancouver Cannons 3-2 and 10-0 on Saturday and then freestyling

past the North Delta Blue Jays 6-5 and 2-1. The wins clinched second place in the B.C. Premier Baseball League for the Pirates. Nanaimo actually finished the regular season this year with a better

record than last summer, when they went 34-14 to win the pennant. Most notable from the weekend wins was Crosby Rushton’s two-run home run in the blowout against the Cannons. In the early

game that day Justin Clarkson hit a game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the seventh. Playoffs start Saturday (July 28) at Serauxmen Stadium, likely against the Victoria Eagles.

Clippers golf for anniversary The Nanaimo Clippers still need golfers and sponsors to make their upcoming golf tournament successful. Part owner Kelly Hrudey will be among the participants at the Aug. 10 event at Cottonwood Golf Course. Cost for golf and dinner is $125. Hole sponsorships are being offered for $200. Fastball player captures gold Nanaimo fastball player Cheyenne deLaronde and her teammates are leaving opponents bedevilled. DeLaronde’s U16 Victoria Devils won gold at the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championships in Surrey earlier this month, going 11-1 through the tourney and defeating the Burnaby Oakeys in the final. A week later, the team took silver at Softball B.C.’s bantam A championships, losing the final 6-5 to the host Delta Heat. At one point at provincials deLaronde pitched four straight games. The secondplace result qualifies the Devils for nationals in Brantford, Ont. next month. In other softball news, the U19 Nanaimo Nitro won silver at Softball B.C. provincials in Sooke earlier this month.
