Council gives green light for funding dollars By Treena Mielke Council, at its regular meeting, July 16, approved a grant application from the Ladies Auxiliary for $374.29 for the club’s strawberry tea and bake sale. Council also approved an application for $500 from Rimbey Exhibition Association for its 2012 Rodeo. Council also granted a request from Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Rimbey for $500 for its Bowl for Kids Sake Fundraiser, and the Rimbey Art Club for $500 for the Alberta Culture Days Art Show to be held in September. A total of $1.434 million in building permits were issued in Rimbey as of June 30. These include three new residential permits for $960,000 and five residential renovations for $68,000. One new commercial building permit for $160,000 has been issued and three commercial renovations totalling $56,000 has been issued. A total of $20,000 in institutional renovations has been issued and two new industrial building

permits valued at $170,000 have been issued. The Town of Rimbey has received $8,000 from the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks, and Wildlife Foundation for The Nesting Place RV Park. The Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation receive an annual allocation from the Alberta Lottery Fund, as well as support from the private and corporate sectors. Rick Kreklewich, director of community services, reports the department is working on acquiring space at the Rimbey Provincial Building for the Out-of-School Care program. “Having our own space for this program is idea as it can be used solely by the program, thus eliminating set up times and scheduling around others.” The public works department hauled 50 yards of crushed concrete to Legacy Court II to help with the road conditions there. Public works built a pad for the E-Waste container at the recycle depot.

Resident questions council about recreation By Treena Mielke

cause council wants to determine what is the most effective use of recreation dollars. The survey, part of a $40,000 recreation parks and trails master plan, has been funded through a provincial grant. Ibbotson said the survey will be most helpful. “We are trying to find out what people want and put the money where the people want it to go.” He explained that the recreation director is busy with regular duties and has neither the time nor expertise to complete such a survey. Rondeel said about 250 questionnaires have been returned and the survey is expected to be completed in November. Poulson also wanted to know why the new playground equipment has not been installed. “Why wasn’t it ordered earlier so it could be used by the kids?” It just doesn’t seem to be real efficient. The timing doesn’t seem right to me.” But Goode explained the ordering process is long and involved. “It’s not just like going out and buying a new grader,” he said. Rondeel said the playground equipment is exCoun. Gayle Rondeel pected to be installed in late July or early August. File Photo

A Rimbey resident who had several questions regarding the direction recreation seems to be heading in town was appeased after approaching council. Eileen Poulson attended the July 16 council meeting and also sent a letter to council questioning the need for a recreation board and the purpose of the recreation director. “Why are we paying for a survey when we have a rec director and a rec board?” she asked. Poulson also wanted to know why a decision regarding playground equipment had not been made until June. She said she has been talking to other residents and they all have questions about council’s decisions regarding recreation. “Mine is just a coffee shop survey,” she said. “But we are all wondering. In talking to other people, we feel the rec board doesn’t have any authority.” Rimbey CAO Tony Goode explained Rimbey’s recreation board acts as an advisory Phyllis - Dave board. “They have no & Ryan Karroll Are looking for girls between money and no staff. Family pet part of growing up years Once, a long time ago, I set the dinner table with five plates, used the big pot to boil potatoes and discreetly fed a wee black and white mutt named Barney scraps under the table. Once, I lived in a house where the front entry was cluttered with runTreena Mielke ning shoes and baseball gloves and bikes littered On The Other Side the front yard. Once, three kids and a dog lived here. It was fun. It was good, but, of course, nothing lasts forever and the kids grew up and moved out, taking their most precious belongings with them, and leaving the rest to gather dust for years and years in the basement. I foolishly thought the dog, who was forever running around barking at nothing in particular in the back yard or dozing in the patch of sunlight that streamed through the living room window, would be one of those possessions that would remain with us forever. It turned out he wasn’t. Barney grew old. He grew feeble. And as the years passed he no longer ran around the back yard in circles barking joyously at nothing in particular. And then one day, he simply wouldn’t get up. I took him to the vet, but, apparently his time here on earth with us was done. And, so I went home, put away his doggie dish and resolved to have no more pets. But hoping, perhaps, to fill the gap left by a black and white mutt whose ghost still seemed to be running around in the back yard, we did have other dogs. But for some reason, none of them seemed to wiggle and squirm their way into our hearts like Barney. Barney was part of peanut butter sandwich and Kool Aid summer days. He was mud and dirt and a tail that never quit wagging. He was backyard barbecues and campouts. He was a bundle of soft black fur and muddy paws across a clean kitchen floor. Mostly, Barney was simply our dog and we loved him. And he loved us, too. When I gave birth to my last child, Barney sat on the hospital steps, waiting. And, when we brought that tiny pink bundle home, all proud and happy, he was, too. And he growled fiercely when strangers so much as ventured a peek at what he considered his new treasure. It was many, many years ago that a dog named Barney raced around our back yard barking furiously at nothing at all. And, up until last week, Barney has remained a memory shrouded in cobwebs that I hadn’t brought out and dusted off for a very long time. But, this week that all changed. And it changed because another dog has come into our lives. This week we have Marble. Marble belongs to another family; a family whose front entry way is crowded with runners and whose front yard is littered with bikes. And he is part of the their summer days; peanut butter sandwiches and backyard barbecues and long, long walks. But for two weeks, he is here, with us. The grandparents. And it’s fun. Marble is a bundle of soft fur that wiggles and squirms his way into your heart, refusing to budge. Marble, who has a severe overbite and a annoying way of getting under your feet until you almost, but not quite, trip over him, epitomizes all the characteristics that ‘self help’ books encourage: friendliness, happiness, enthusiasm and curiosity. I think Marble and I have bonded in the few days he has been with us. And I’m pretty sure he likes me lots because my husband says he sleeps in the big chair by the front door until I come home. And when I do come in, he’s up in a single bound, jumping around, licking me and wagging his tail furiously. And he doesn’t even seem to mind that sometimes when I’m petting his soft, wiggly self, I forget his name. And call him Barney.

Canadian economy supports more workers With Parliament adjourned until Sept. 17, it is a good time to look back on what we’ve accomplished over the last year. By far, the number 1 story over the last year has been the economy. Since July 2009, Canada has created MP Blaine nearly 760,000 net new jobs, and more than 90 Calkins per cent of these jobs are full-time. We are also taking the steps to help businesses hire new workers, like extending the Small Business Hiring Credit — a direct, practical way to help the businesses at the heart of our economy continue to grow and hire more people. Our government is also working to help Canadians take advantage of the jobs the Canadian economy is creating, linking workers with employers and supporting skills training. For example, the third quarter program, which is now being rolled out across the country, helps workers over 50, while the Youth Employment Strategy is supporting younger workers. We are taking steps to streamline environmental assessments so that projects aren’t held up in red tape. We have already shortened project review timelines from four years to 22 months, on average. We’re taking action to move toward a goal of ‘one project, one review.’ This means that we won’t wastefully duplicate the work of provincial

agencies, while at the federal level we are consolidating the number of agencies involved from 40 to three. Of course, we are looking out for law abiding citizens by abolishing the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry that wasn’t keeping Canadians safe, only criminalizing honest hunters and farmers. We also promised to pass the Safe Streets and Communities Act within 100 sitting days of this session of Parliament. We delivered on our promise. No more house arrest for serious and violent criminals; tougher sentences for sexual offences against children; and tougher sentences for organized drug crime. Not only that, but our government is also clarifying the law on citizen’s arrest. Canadians are outraged when the system appears to side with the criminal against the victim. We passed a bill to help make it clear what’s permissible in self-defence and during a citizen’s arrest. We’ve also delivered support to ensure Canada’s retirement system remains sustainable for the seniors of today and tomorrow, while continuing to support our veterans and delivering tax relief for families, including the Family Caregiver Tax Credit, the Children’s Arts Tax Credit and the Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit. Our government will continue to listen to constituents concerns and pass legislation that will strengthen our country. Merritt RCMP arrest wanted fugitive sought in Rimbey RCMP have arrested a man wanted in Rimbey and Ponoka before he could become criminally active in Merritt, B.C. Mounties arrested Nathan Weir on July 6, several months after his arrival in Merritt, with information obtained through the B.C. Fugitive Return Program. “He has not been charged with any criminal offences in Merritt but we had some dealings with him,” RCMP Const. Tracy Dunsmore. While the RCMP doesn’t usually arrest people with warrants from other provinces, Dunsmore said Merritt RCMP contacted Alberta RCMP because Weir had so many warrants for arrest and they decided it was worth their while to bring him back to Alberta. “They made all the arrangements and we knew where he was living in town so we were able to arrest him,” said Dunsmore. “There were no incidents (related to the arrest).” The 33-year-old was wanted in Red Deer, Rimbey, Blackfalds, Sylvan Lake, Ponoka and Sundre. Offences included two counts of

fraud over $5,000, three counts of fraud under $5,000, and several counts of failing to appear or attend court. Weir was also wanted for two counts of forgery, two counts of forging a document as well as impaired driving and possession of property obtained by crime. His criminal history dates back to 1999. “Due to the excellent pro-active policing and cooperation between the B.C. Fugitive Return Program and the Merritt RCMP and Vancouver Police Department, Mr. Weir was returned to face prosecution on his outstanding charges,” said an RCMP press release. Weir was escorted back to Red Deer by the Alberta Sheriffs and the Alberta Attorney General funded his return, which was co-ordinated by the Fugitive Return Program. The Fugitive Return Program is managed by the RCMP and funded by the Civil Forfeiture Office within the B.C. government. Created to hold individuals living in B.C. with out of province arrest warrants accountable, the program has helped the return 19 people since September 2011.

RCMP officers dress in red serge to lead Rimbey parade Rimbey RCMP had a steady week responding to numerous serious motor vehicle collisions, theft, assault and other criminal matters. Mounties love a parade Mounties thoroughly enjoyed marching in Rimbey on parade day. The weather cooperated and great fun was had by all. Horsemen on the highways Police continue to step up traffic enforcement on the highways surrounding the community. Officers have issued a number of tickets for various offences on Highways

22, 53, 20 and Secondary Highway 766. In some cases, your local GRCs have been on the secondary roads where some folks have been found operating their vehicles without insurance, or license plates. Drive according to road conditions On July 18 at approximately 8:40 a.m., emergency personnel responded quickly to a call of a rollover on Township Road 422 near Range Road 25. A SUV eastbound lost control in a short stretch of freshly laid gravel and went off the roadway. A 23-yearold woman, a resident of Rimbey, was treat-

ed on scene and transported to the Rimbey hospital via EMS for non-life threatening injuries. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this case. Throughout the detachment area, counties are doing extensive road work improving the base of the roadways with fresh gravel. Drivers are reminded to drive according to road conditions and to exercise caution at all times. Watch for wildlife and livestock Several deer and even cattle were hit by motorists who were not expecting to see a

Two dead in head-on collision By Treena Mielke A tragic head-on collision occurring a few miles south of Rimbey on Highway 20 early July 17 morning proved deadly for both drivers. RCMP Sgt. Mark Groves said 30-yearold Jason Stout of Rimbey was killed when the vehicle he was driving collided with a minivan being driven by a 36-year-old Red Deer man. The deceased Red Deer man’s name is not being released without the family’s permission, said Groves. Both men were dead when the emergency crews arrived on the scene, said Groves. The officer said Rimbey RCMP and

emergency crews responded to the collision on the ‘S’ curves by Parkland Beach Road at about 5:30 a.m. Groves said a RCMP collision analyst was called in to assist the Rimbey RCMP and it was determined that the Red Deer man, who was driving south, had crossed over the centre line, striking the northbound four-door car driven by Stout. Groves said the southbound driver may have been distracted, as it appears he was eating at the time of the accident. The highway was closed for five hours following the accident. Alcohol was not a factor and road conditions were good. Russ Watts, Infrastructure Manager for

Alberta Transportation said Highway 20 near Rimbey experiences a vehicle county of 3,200 vehicles a day. While he said many two-lane highways in Alberta experience higher counts, he noted the highway is moderately busy. Groves said Rimbey RCMP has increased officer presence along the highway. He encourages drivers to be alert and pay attention. “It is so important to be alert at all times. For one thing, you never know when a deer can jump out in front of you.” He said Rimbey RCMP has increased officer presence along the highway.

four-legged creature in their path. Always be attentive and prepared for the unexpected. Seniors on scooters need to be careful Police have also received complaints of senior citizens riding their scooters in Rimbey who have not exactly been exercising caution when driving on sidewalks and crossing roadways. If you have a scooter to get from point A to point B please be careful. Cat burglar denied entry Police attended a residence on 50th Street to investigate an attempted break and enter to the residence. In the last couple weeks, someone has climbed up a metal pole to a second-storey balcony and tried to kick their way into an apartment. The door sustained extensive damages but held up against the attack. Although the perpetrator did not gain access, the vandalism cost the victim a new door. Usual offenders re-arrested Mounties continue to monitor the chronic habitual offenders in the community who have been released from custody awaiting trials or the end of their respective parole conditions. Several of these “well known” folks have been arrested and charged for breaching their conditions in an effort to reduce the number of incidents of break and enter, car prowling and other issues these fine citizens seem to find themselves committing. Lavesta reunion reunites former classmates and friends By Treena Mielke

These ladies, who attended the 100th anniversary of the Lavesta Hall dressed up in wedding dresses which were popular several years ago. In the back are Judy Cummings, Wynelle Powers from Kelowna, B.C., Nadine Green, Delores Arsonold and Donna Grant (wearing her own wedding dress from 1959). In the front are Pat Stout, Gayle Johnson from Duncan, B.C. and Debra McMechan. The wedding dresses come from a collection belonging to the late Charlotte Pregoda. The old Lavesta schoolhouse and hall, now used only occasionally, came to life recently as former classmates and neighbors got together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the building. Heather Sakofsky, who helped organized the event held July 13 to 15 along with Debra McMehan (nee Pregoda), said about 160 people attended the celebration. “It was awesome,” she said. “A good crowd showed up and everyone had a good time. We even had Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Menge, a family from Kazakhastan in attendance. They were visiting his mother, Helen Menge, who lives in Red Deer.” Lavesta Hall was used as a school from 1912 to 1959, housing students from grades 1 to 8. Eileen Picketts (nee Sakofsky) from Red Deer was one of those students. She recalled her school years as a happy time where people came together to help each other out. “Everybody did things together and we had very good teachers.” Picketts said her brother, Charles, did the janitorial work at the

school and sometimes she helped him out, making sure the floors were clean and the fire going. She recalls heating a big canner full of water on the stove to serve cocoa. The Sakosky children, Charles, Albert and Eileen, had a two-mile walk to school, although sometimes they would travel in a sleigh pulled by a single horse. Picketts recalled the horse taking off one time and taking them on a wild ride through the ditches. Because George Staroszik, now from Calgary, lived on the south side of the road, he attended the Fuller School, although the Sakoskys and Fullers were neighbors. The third oldest of seven children, Staroszik recalled how his parents. Gust and Waive. would take in people new to the neighborhood until they got settled. “Word got round, Gust will look after you,” he said. They would take them in, feed them, the house was never locked.” Staroszik and Picketts agreed that things were different when they were growing up. There was great community spirit, everyone was hospitable, everyone helped everyone else,. Marie Liner (nee Krossa) recalled being a student in the classroom. “I think we learned a lot by listening to the teacher teach the next grade. I loved that school. I always wanted to be a teacher and I still enjoy learning. I am curious to this day.” Liner, who walked two and a half miles to school every day, doesn’t remember the long walks. “It was normal. We didn’t know any different.” According to history data posted on the wall of the Lavesta Hall, Gus Staroszik, William Pregoda and John Sakofsky were the first settlers in the Lavesta area. The men lived in a cave dug out of a hill on Staroszik’s farm. When Minnie Sakofsky arrived with Yetta, John, Paul and Emma there was no place to live but the cave as all the logs to be used for a house were burned. The men helped William Pregoda finish his home and the Pregoda and Staroszik families moved in. In 1907 the Sakofskys moved into their own log home. Minnie Sakofsky died in childbirth at 36 years of age after giving birth to her sixth child, Louise. In 1908, when his house was finished, Staroszik sent for his wife, Marie, and children, Emma, Gus Jr., May and Arthur who were in Germany. However, that home burned down and the family moved in with the Sakofskys until a new house was built. In 1914 Gus Sr. went back to Germany and at age 16 Gus Jr. took over the farm. John Sakofsky died in 1926 and William Pregoda died in 1978.

Most of the crops grown in Alberta are cool season crops and prefer daytime temperatures in the range of 20 and 25-degree C, where they perform best. While recent temperatures are going above that 25-degree C mark, with the rain experienced in late June and early July, some heat isn’t too much of a problem. The risk to crop yields comes with a prolonged period of extreme temperatures coupled with declining soil moisture reserves. “Now that cereal crops are headed out and canola crops are in full bloom, the greatest concern is crop water use,” says Ross McKenzie, research scientist–agronomy, with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “Crops need to transpire to keep cool, so the hotter the days, the more water that is required for the plants to keep growing, seed filling and maturing. During normal temperatures of around 20 to 25 degrees C, crops such as spring wheat and canola will use about seven mm of water a day at head-

ing growth stage for wheat and full flowering for canola. When the temperatures climb above 30˚C, this water need increases to eight to 8.5 mm a day. This means that crops will be using about 25 mm (one inch) every three days in very hot conditions. The result is soil moisture reserves decline relatively quickly with high crop water use. “Concerns develop when crops cannot take up enough moisture from the soil to keep themselves cool, and they will start to look wilted during the peak of the day, although they will usually recover during the evening. While this isn’t too much of a problem if it only occurs over a few days, if it continues for a period of several weeks, plants will become increasingly stressed, which leads to considerable yield reduction with prolonged hot, dry conditions.” Heat affects crop types differently. Peas are the crop in greatest danger from extreme heat. Peas in full flower can terminate and go directly to pod fill when daytime tem-

peratures go much above 25 degrees C for periods of only a few days. Canola can show some flower blasting, but this normally shouldn’t have a huge impact on crop yield, unless there is a prolonged period of hot weather. For wheat and barley, as long as there is sufficient soil moisture available after heading for grain filling, higher than normal temperatures won’t have too much of a negative effect on yield. However, if soil moisture levels become very low, cereal crops will not fully fill and crop yields will decline accordingly. A warm season crop like corn, which is a C4 crop, actually benefits from heat, but C4 crops aren’t grown extensively in Alberta. With adequate irrigation water, corn crops will thrive in 30˚C weather. “The most common crops in Alberta are considered cool season crops and they perform the best at daytime temperatures of between 20 and 25 degrees C,” says McKenzie.

Large hay crops may have some nutritional deficiencies Ideal growing conditions in many areas of the province should result in above average first cut hay yields. Many people are optimistic that the weather will cooperate and that the hay will be put up with minimal or no rain damage. High yielding forage crops typically have lower nutritional content than hay from years with average or below average yields. Soils contain limited amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulfur and other trace elements needed for plant growth. As these soil nutrients are taken up by the plant, soil reserves are rapidly

reduced or depleted. “With higher yields, the nutrients available from the soil are distributed in the plant material, and nutrients are diluted down and are not as concentrated as in other years,” says Barry Yaremcio, beef specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. “For example, protein content in the hay can be at eight to 10 per cent rather than an average of 12 to 14 per cent. Macro and micronutrients can be one-third to one-half lower than average. With this in mind, the use of a fortified trace mineral salt with selenium is strong-

ly recommended. Blue salt will not meet the animals’ trace mineral requirements in most situations. “This year’s hay that has a nice smell and good colour may not have the kick it needs to keep the cows in good condition and calves growing. Just because the hay is green does not mean that it has adequate amounts of protein, and energy — the two most important nutrients. Hay that is over mature, or if there were cool cloudy conditions for most of the growing season, can result in low protein and high-fibre (low energy) hay.” As hay matures, protein, energy, calcium and phosphorus levels decline. The reduction in quality becomes more pronounced after grasses have headed out and legumes have set seed. Cut the hay according to maturity and weather conditions not the date on the calendar. “The only way to know what your animals are receiving in their ration is to send samples away for analysis,” adds Yaremcio. “Spending $50 to $60 per sample of hay or silage is the only way to know the quality. Balance the ration and prevent feedrelated problems before growth rates, reproduction, or herd health are reduced.” Having feed test results available and using the Cowbytes ration balancing program at home, or working with a nutritionist can save money either on the purchases required, or having more pounds of calf for sale in the fall.

Crops flourish in hot dry weather By Amelia Naismith

Crops in Ponoka County have flourished with the hot dry weather that has occurred in the last few weeks. Photo by George Brown

Crops in Ponoka County are advancing well due to the weather conditions of the last two weeks. The 2012 Alberta Crop Report Series, from the Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development Economics and Competitiveness Division, has put out another summary for the five regions of Alberta. According to the report crops in the Central region are advancing quickly due to the dry, hot weather. “We need the warm weather to help the crops mature,” said Shayne Steffen, Ponoka County manager of agricultural services. More than 94 per cent of spring wheat, durum, barley, oats, canola and dry peas are being rated good to excellent. Seventy-three per cent of canola is flowering, 23 per cent is in the rosette stage and three per cent is podding. Most cereal crops are in the late boot stage, with some starting to head, says the report. However, some crops of the regions are showing signs of heat and moisture stress says the report. First cut haying operations are 20 per cent complete on dryland and 10 per cent on irrigated land. Steffen said clubroot inspections will start in about a week and fusarium graminearum sampling will start on long-term corn silage fields. Toadflax, Canada thistle and white cockle are the weeds of concern to Ponoka. “Weed inspections are continuing with just under 400 fields surveyed with tall buttercup and

the hawkweed species and scentless chamomile as the weeds of concern in the Rimbey area” Steffen said. Most moisture reserves in the county are rated as good to excellent. For the province as a whole, as of July 10, 12.2 per cent of sub-surface moisture conditions were rated as fair, 54.9 per cent as good and 30.4 per cent as

excellent. Less than two per cent has been rated excessive. Hailstorms have occurred throughout the province but hail damage, for the most part, is minor. For the province no crops have been rated as poor, and the majority of each crop is rated good with the next highest rating being excellent.

Sisters receive continuing education bursary from Masons By Treena Mielke In the process of furthering their education, two Rimbey-area sisters have received a financial boost from a service club. The Kitchener #95 branch of the Masons awarded Chantel Went and her sister Jeanine Went each a $2,000 bursary to go towards the girls’ continuing education. Both young women are grateful to receive the funding that will help them achieve their educational goals. Eighteen-year-old Chantel, who is attending Medicine Hat College, received the bursary last year as well. The teen is studying sports massage therapy at college and is also on the basketball team. During the summer she is coaching basketball at NBC camps in Edmonton, Olds and Calgary. She has also coached at a private camp in Stony Plain. The young athlete player plans to participate in a basketball game in Stony Plain Aug. 19 to 24. The game is to be the longest basketball game ever played in the world. It is to be 118 hours long and

three teams will participate with players taking two-hour shifts. “It’s going to be ridiculous,” she said, smiling, adding the players are hoping it will go into the Guinness Book of Records. Proceeds from the game are to go to Operation Amigo. Jeanine Went, 22, has received a science degree from the University of Lethbridge and is planning on obtaining her education degree from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C. For the third consecutive summer, she has worked at the Rimbey Public Library, a job she continues to enjoy. “I love the kids. It’s great to see them grow.” Jeanine said the money from the Masons has helped both her and her sister pursue their career goals. “It definitely helps a lot.” She said their parents taught them both to pursue a career they loved. “They always encouraged us to do what we loved and this funding has certainly helped both of us to do that.” Jeanine has received the Masons bursary four times.

By June Norvila ATCO Gas is celebrating its centennial this year and to celebrate they have volunteer employees who have committed to completing 100 days of community service projects/days in the company’s “100 Days of Caring” project. A crew of 10 was in Bentley on July 5 and painted the front side of the municipal library building, the backyard library fence enclosure, and the rail fence on the west side of the town’s municipal campground. The fresh new paint really spruced up the areas and was much appreciated, especially by those connected with the library. The new facelift made a huge difference in its overall appearance. The town provided the supplies and the ATCO crew supplied the time, energy and labor.

Today’s the anniversary, of the day we lost you. And for a time it felt as though, our lives had ended too. But loss has taught us many things, and we face each day, With hope and happy memories, to help us on our way. And though we are full of sadness, that you’re no longer here. Your influence still guides us, and we feel you near.

What we shared will never die, it lies within out hearts. Bringing strength and comfort, while we are apart. On behalf of Abbey “Dru” and James “Kent” Davison, we would like to extend our sincere and emotional thank you to the Gimlet Community Association and the Lee Mannix Memorial Cutter Rally†for the more than generous gift to the Davison Children Trust Fund. We would also like extend our†thanks to the individuals who organized, participated and to the generous sponsors. Jody believed in education, community and giving. We are very thankful that she had become a part of a community that also cherishes these values. Jody loved Rimbey, the people she worked with and the friends that she made. Your generosity toward her and her children will impact them for their lifetimes. This will help secure their education and teach them that they can make a difference in someone’s life by volunteering and the satisfaction of giving. We would also like to thank all the individuals who have also given to the Davison Children Trust Fund. We have done our best to send out individual thank you cards, however if we have inadvertently missed you please accept our sincere thank you, and our apologies. These gifts will also have an over whelming impact on the future education of these two bright children. Hockey helps rehab The Young Guns, who annually organize a golf tournament to raise money for local charities, have started a rehabilitation scholarship through the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation. This organization is made up of hockey players, their family members, or hockey enthusiasts. They all understand how important it is to have qualified medical staff to tend to Central Albertans and especially active and former hockey players. This $2,500 scholarship will be awarded annually to an someone pursuing an advanced education in fields related to rehabilitation. The Red Deer Regional Health Foundation has worked with individuals and organizations to develop 11 scholarships available to central Albertans pursuing careers in medical fields. In 2011, $16,000 in scholarships was awarded to ambitious students, and this year, with additional donors, the foundation expects to exceed that success. The scholarships apply to a wide variety of educational pursuits, including cardiology, respiratory health medicine, hospice palliative care, nursing, pediatrics and much more. The scholarships are one way to contribute to recruiting, retaining and encouraging highquality, trained professionals, and a crucial step in maintaining a world-class health care system. Attendance up for rodeo weekend events By Treena Mielke The sun smiled on Rimbey Rodeo weekend this year, and organizers seemed pleased with both the weather and the large attendance at most of the events. “We had a bigger crowd than we have had in 10 years,” said Hazel Street. “We are really happy; very impressed. The weather was great and it seems everyone had a good weekend. There were no people or animal injuries and the cabaret was a great success. There was no problems, no fights.” Street said volunteers, including the Lions Club, who provided the concession, deserve recognition for all the work they did to make the rodeo a success. This year’s Rimbey Rodeo Queen is Emily Henschel from Pigeon Lake, sponsored by Nikirk Brothers. Her princess is Caitlyn Malynk from Clive, sponsored by Action Auto Body . The Rimbey parade, held July 14, was the biggest ever, said Tanya Mercredi from the town’s recreation depart-

ment, who was in charge of the parade. “It was awesome; the feedback has been great.” Mercredi said more than 90 groups and individuals took part in this year’s parade, which ran just under an hour and included a float from Red Deer County and Westlake Community, as well as the Red Deer Royals. “There were 108 of the Royals in the parade including band leaders and members,” said Mercredi. “And they were fantastic.” Once again, The Lions Club stepped up to the plate, providing the Royals with lunch free of charge, she added. “That’s why this community is such a wonderful community,” said Mercredi. “It (the parade) would not have been as successful without volunteers.” Another event, lunch at the Beatty House, which has been held immediately after the parade for several years, also was well attended. “It went well, it was one of our best turnouts yet,” said secretary Florence Stemo. She said people flocked to the Beatty House to enjoy

hotdogs and smokies, sitting at a table in the sunshine or finding one in the shade, depending on their preference. Rimbey Foods supplied coffee and buns were provided by the Rimbey Co-op for the lunch. General manager of Rimbey Co-op, Caralee Strome, said the pancake breakfast sponsored by the Co-op and Rimbey’s branch of Servus Credit Union was well attended, though numbers were down slightly from last year. “We served 415 people and raised over $1,400 for the elementary school playground. Attendance was down a little, but funds raised were up.” A show and shine held Sunday had about 30 vehicles participating and Cheryl Jones, Pas Ka Poo Park administrator and curator said it wasn’t “our best one ever.” “We really need a car club to take this on. It has the potential to be something fabulous.” However, Jones said those who did attend the show and shine enjoyed the park setting, She noted the historical buildings were in keeping with the age of some of the vehicles.
