NVSS school spirit march the streets of Vanderhoof Christina Millington Omineca Express The NVSS reunion took over the streets of Vanderhoof on July 21 as the 1970-1975 graduating classes participated in the Tractor Parade with their own own float, which exuded school spirit. The NVSS 2012 reunion marched down Burrand Street in celebration of time passed and friendships rekindled. The weekend events ended at the Rainbow Christian School with a dinner and a dance. Speeches were made by students and teachers while entertainment by Sound Addiction, a group from Prince George, filled the gymnasium welcoming the attendees to the dance floor to commemorate and honour their NVSS successes some 40 years ago. Mayor Thiessen stood before his class of 1975 and spoke highly of his high school career and those he shared it with. Laughs were shared and friendships were reunited. Photo by Christina Millington

Rio Tinto Alcan: no regard for community Christina Millington Omineca Express Rio Tinto Alcan seems to be the topic of conversation that weighs heavy on the mind of council members and many concerned residents. Rio Tinto Alcan is a leading international mining group acquiring $350,000,000 to build upon their already two existing tunnels, which seems to have hit a communication barrier with Vanderhoof council members and residents in regards to future development. Rio Tinto Alcan vice president, Paul Henning spoke to council members on July 16 regarding the companies plan to develop a third back-up tunnel to sustain the water levels coming in at the plant. “The scope of this project is so specific,” he said. Currently two tunnels are fully operational at the Kemano power plant.

Concerns still revolve around whether or not council will go forth with the approval of a back-up tunnel at the plant with the little information they have on the project. Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Pat Bell has placed unsatisfactory guidelines on the district to make a decision by July 20 to decide whether or not to move forward with the tunnel. During the July 16 council meeting, Mayor Thiessen expressed that the decision-making should be up to the provincial government regarding the magnitude of the decision. “We very much look to the province. The province needs to be the one that makes the decision on it,” he said. “This is in the 1950 agreement that they had on the water license. They were given the authority to make that decision.” Thiessen is cautious with moving forward with the construction of the additional tunnel as communities concerns have surfaced regarding the effects it may have on the Nechako River.

Rio Tinto Alcan is currently working on excavating the remaining 7.6 kilometres required to complete the partially built 16 kilometres 2nd tunnel, which would connect the existing penstocks at their West Tahtsa Lake location. Concerns that have been addressed amongst council members is that this project has been in the works for several months without acknowledgement from the provincial government to the town of Vanderhoof or to the First Nations communities. Rio Tinto Alcan has been aware of their need to connect with the First Nations communities, Saik’uz and Nadleh Whut’en allowing them the opportunity to put forth feedback regarding the project, as they are the original inhabitants of the land along the Nechako River, however, nothing has been facilitated. “What happens to Vanderhoof once the water is gone,” Thiessen said. “It’s a fear the community has.”

100 miles of what? For those of you who have never heard of the 100 mile diet - fret not. Its more about diet change as opposed to dieting (is that a sigh of relief I hear?) The 100 mile diet is a social movement that advocates eating locallygrown food within a 100 mile (160km) radius as put forward by Canadian writers Alisa Smith and J.B MacKinnon who bring to light the changes in our food. Notice how surprisingly difficult it is to find BC fruit in a BC store? Why don’t local stores provide local foods & local goods? Grocery stores that buy local produce have it at a lower price as it requires less fuel to deliver, meaning savings for you. One of the benefits of eating local is you get to know the people providing your goods, to know your community & strengthen it as well. How are you supporting your local community? Your local economy? Your atmosphere?! I think we all agree that trucking in apples from thousands of kilometers away sounds odd when we can and do grow them much closer right? That accumulated mileage usually transfers directly into higher costs that give profit to a not local head office. Vanderhoof may have a short growing season, but we can grow many vegetables and fruits here as well, why are we not taking advantage of that? Another benefit? Flavor! Fresh fruits and veggies taste incredible compared to store bought already older produce. Even if produce looks fresh in the store, often it’s picked before its ripe which affects the flavor but does enhance shipping. Some of those great looking veggies are actually sprayed with coloring before they are shipped out to the stores, and deficient in the vitamins and minerals you eat them for. Ripe, properly grown produce has a higher vitamin and mineral content keeping you fuller, and feeling better with get this... eating less. The impact of buying local also builds up our community, our town and our people, it keeps prices low and makes more available to us, helps our environment and reduces air pollution. Here in Vanderhoof we are lucky to have a Farmers Market in the park every Thursday, as well as the Nechako Valley Food Network, which does all the leg work for you! Their free pamphlets contain information on locally produced produce, honey, meats, and products, if you missed yours in the mail, try checking to the left of the Co-Op community board. If you have something you’d like to offer give them a call or send off an e-mail! Get together with a few people and make some bigger purchases for possibly bigger discounts, or buy for just yourself. Ask your local grocery store to supply locally grown produce for better prices. Make your community your own and rely on the stores for ‘all the other stuff’. We are blessed to have such community projects run by volunteers that help make your lives easier and healthier. Council members have made it apparent that the project has been dragging on for far too long, as they begin discussion of introducing a pool into the community back in 2009. Community concerns have also surfaced regarding the funding and the prospect that taxes can increase to accommodate the million dollar project. Little has ensured that the pool community is moving forward and the final touches are being made to go forward with the referendum.

BC Liquor Laws encourages B.Y.O.B BC Restaurant and Food Services Association modernize to accomodate the needs of the average “diner” Contributed Minister Rich Coleman announced today that British Columbians can now bring their own bottle of wine into participating restaurants and enjoy it with their meals. “We want to provide our restaurant industry with greater flexibility in terms of the services it can offer to its customers,” said Rich Coleman, Minister responsible for liquor. “Today’s change does just that - it allows customers to pair their favourite wine with their favourite restaurant.” Patrons will be required to have the wine served in the same manner as wine selected from the menu and restaurants may charge a corkage fee for this service. “The government continues to introduce common-sense solutions such as the Bring Your Own Wine program. This gives industry the needed flexibility to get people out and dine more,” said Ian Tostenson, president and CEO of the British Columbia Restaurant

and Food Service Association. “More business will result in positive economic impacts such as increased employment and downstream benefits to suppliers of the industry. This is a very innovative, flexible and common-sense policy.” This change is supported by the BC Restaurant and Food services Association and the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association. Participation in this service by licensed restaurants is voluntary. “Restauranteurs, especially those with limited wine inventories, welcome the option of allowing their guests to bring their

own wine,” said Mark von Schellwitz, vice president of Western Canada for the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association. “This liquor policy change allows those restaurant guests who want to celebrate a special event by bringing a vintage bottle of wine from their own cellar to their favourite restaurant to do so.” Licensees are still liable if patrons are over-served or liquor service is provided to minors. As in other provinces, there are no plans to broaden this beyond wine to include beer and spirits. “By allowing people to bring their own bottle of wine into

their favourite dining establishment, we’ve provided restaurant owners with a great opportunity to create a new type of dining experience that will further promote our wonderful restaurants here in British Columbia,” continued Coleman. These changes build on the B.C. government’s commitment to modernize B.C.’s liquor laws.

Have a voice The well-organized and well-finaced opposition to the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline frightens me. The proposed pipeline is a great opportunity to diversify the local economy with training for high paying, permanent jobs - particularly for the Aboriginal communities. The fear of a major oil spill should consider that the Trans Mountain Pipeline has been moving oil over the mountains and across rivers to the Vancouver area for 62 years without a major spill that I know of. Today’s better materials, technology, regulations, supervision, inspection and practices makes a new pipeline even safer. The fear of a major oil spill into the Pacific ocean should consider the Exxon Valdez oil spill. We were on a tour one year later to the site and saw no lasting damage. The local tour guide said, “the environmentalist’s did more damage with their hot water than the oil did.” The fear of a major oil spill from tanker traffic should consider that tankers are safer now, and that the Exxon Valdez and the BC ferries disasters were “human errors.” Also consider that Norway, with similar coastlines, ships major oil by tankers and has offshore production platforms. The misinformation about the “dirty” oil sands should look at the reality of it. Canada with 0.5 per cent of the world’s population produces 2 percent of the global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Oil sands account for only 6.5 per cent of Canada’s GHG emissions. Since 1990, GHG emissions associated with every barrel of oil sands crude produced have been reduced by 29 per cent. Canada needs to diversify its oil export markets to Asia, and the Northern Gateway Pipeline is probably the best way to do it. The opportunities for Aboriginal communities is enormous. (The Sawridge Inns and Convention Centres - “proud supporters of the Oil and Gas Industry” are an excellent example of working with the industry.) There were more than 1,700 Aboriginal employees in permanent operations jobs in the oil sands industry in 2010. The oil sands companies provided $5.5 million to support Aboriginal community programs. Please go to the N.E.B. hearings and listen and make your own presentations rather than participate in organized protests. Opportunity is knocking! Dad to the rescue

Finding a friend in your first true friend, your father Christina Millington Omineca Express I must say time has flown by since arriving in Vanderhoof back in April. I could use this space to tell you of my time here in Vanderhoof, or I can tell you of the support I have been getting from back home. I’m sure you may be wondering why I want to talk about that. Well, this is why. I have always been one to be adventurous, spontaneous and up for chancing my dreams. I have had the love and support of my family and friends whom always encouraged being all that I can be. I realize that is a phrase so often used, nonetheless, it applies to my life. My number one supporter, and the one I will be discussing throughout the remainder of this editorial is my Dad. He has been my best friend, my role model, and my cheerleader. Someone I can count on to get me out of my head and back on track with what’s important – or should be important in my life. It would seem we allow life’s “misfortunes” to get the best of us at times, or it could be that its our human nature to surround ourselves with negative connotations that arise in life, where we forget to look through it for the good.

I used to be very affectionate, always having to say “I love you” before bed, which would require hearing it back from my Dad before I could close my eyes. Let me explain before I move on with what I mean by “used to be affectionate.” I have changed quite a bit through the years. I have become resistant to letting “people in,” not sure when or how that came about, however, its something I struggle with to this day. My Dad was often the one to tuck my siblings and I in as children. My sister and I shared a room, torture; nonetheless, we were Daddy’s little girls – who am I kidding, we were his Princesses. My sister never needed that reassurance from our Dad that he did indeed love us, where I needed to hear it on a regular basis – hence the drawn out bedtime routines. There’s something special about the relationship between a Father and his daughter(s). Growing up, making friends, losing friends, falling in love, getting your heart broken – I always knew I would have that one person I could lean on, share my secrets with and know they would be that shoulder to lean on or be that calm, cool and collect voice that would make it all better. To this day, I still call upon my Dad when I’m excited to share some news or when I need to let a few tears go over a lengthy phone call. He always knows when to give input and when to let me pour my heart out. My Dad has this calming affect that melts my heart just thinking about it. Being thousands of miles away from home I can’t help but appreciate the relationship my Dad and I. “Distance makes the heart grow fonder.”

COMMUNITY Enbridge pioneers toward “pipeline safety and integrity” Express

Enbridge will be making changes to attempt to make the proposed Northern Gateway Project safer, according to a release which came in as the paper was going to press. In response to concerns resulting from a recently released report on the Line 6B spill into the Kalamazoo River near Marshal, Michigan in 2010 and comments made to the review panel in community hearings. The National Transportation Safety Board report on the Michigan spill resulted in openly critical comments by Premier Christy Clark. The report was highly critical of many of Enbridge’s actions leading up to and during the spill, taking 17 hours to shut down the line despite alarms in the control room in Edmonton. Maintenance on the line was also called into question in the report and critical of both Enbridge and regulators for not following up to ensure repairs were undertaken after inspections showed corrosion and cracking five years before the

line break. In this latest announcement, Enbridge is hoping to allay fears the same could happen in British Columbia or Alberta, where the company hopes to build a twin pipeline from the Alberta oil sands to Kitimat, on the B.C. coast. “We recognize that there are concerns among Aboriginal groups and the public around pipeline safety and integrity. We had already planned to build a state-of-the-art project, using the most advanced technology, safety measures and procedures in the industry today,” said Janet Holder, Executive Vice President, Western Access, Enbridge Inc. “With these enhanced measures, we will make what is already a very safe project even safer in order to provide further comfort to people who are concerned about the safety of sensitive habitats in remote areas.” The extra measures the company said it will implement

include: ● Increasing pipeline wall thickness of the oil pipeline. ● Additional pipeline wall thickness for water crossings such as major tributaries to the Fraser, Skeena and Kitimat Rivers. ● Increasing the number of remotely-operated isolation valves. This would increase the number of isolation valves in BC by 50%. ● Increasing frequency of in-line inspection surveys across entire pipeline system by a minimum 50% over and above current standards. ● Installing dual leak detection systems. ● Staff pump stations in remote locations on a 24/7 basis for on-site monitoring, heightened security, and rapid response to abnormal conditions. Enbridge expects these extra measures will carry an additional cost of approximately $400 million - $500 million.

BC reigns over U.S. compliants A ruling by the London Court of International Arbitration dismissed a U.S. complaint alleging B.C. was selling lumber below market value. The ruling under the 2006 Softwood Lumber Agreement dismissed the U.S. complaint in its entirety. “This is a total victory for British Columbia and Canada and is great news for B.C.’s lumber workers and their families,” said Pat Bell, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation. “Our government has worked hard to defend and create jobs for British Columbians and to demonstrate that the U.S.’s complaints were unwarranted and groundless.” The complaint was due to the increased rate of harvest of low-grade timber due to the mountain pine beetle epidemic. The B.C. government maintains the auctionbased pricing system maintains the full value of the timber. The Softwood Lumber Agreement has been signed on to until October of 2015.

Air Show to gain new ground Christina Millington Omineca Express It has been 8 years since the Vanderhoof community has hosted a local Air Show. Wait no longer. On August 11 Vanderhoof welcomes its planes and pilots back to the community to reintroduce what aviation is all about. Flying demos will be done by John Mrazek, Ron Andrew’s and local pilot Glenn Pearce. Peet Vahi of the Vanderhoof Airport has compiled and facilitated an event that will surely have Air Show’s reacquiring in the town of Vanderhoof. The events on August 11 will commence at 1 p.m. with flying demos and musical guests. Bryant Olender and musical group, BANG! will be entertaining guests during the dinner and dance portion of the event. Nechako Catering will be serving dinner that will start at 5 p.m. and the dance will start at 9 p.m. The three hour Air Show event will be the opportunity to see if the community of Vanderhoof is receptive to getting back to its traditional ways. “I don’t want to give it the Air Show stigma quite yet,” said Vahi. “The local community has been amazing. We need something happy to happen in Vanderhoof.” Come out with family and friends and experience what aviation is all about.

Theme song for Vanderhoof Talented songwriter Lowry Olafson to create and perform Christina Millington Omineca Express Vanderhoof has aspired to adopt a theme song for the community and what better way to obtain such a lyrical masterpiece then to reach out to professional songwriter, Lowry Olafson. A Canadian musician and teacher, Olafson has extended his vocals and instrumentals to many adults and children over the course of his twenty years in the music industry. “I’ll be celebrating my twentieth anniversary this year,” Olafson said. “I’ve been involved with songwriting my whole life.” Olafson has commissioned more than 300 children songs for The Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), producing lyrical anecdotes and jingles. With many appearances in Vanderhoof, Olafson’s wife, Shannon Woode was born and raised here, so collaborating with the locals to produce a meaningful theme song will be an honour for the songwriter. Olafson has also extended his talents to the Evelyn Dickson Elementary School through his Theme Shop program writing songs with the kids. “I work closely with schools,” said Olafson. “I love working with the kids.” His original songs denote a humourous side of the musician that emanates through his performances and interactions with listeners of all ages. Photo submitted by Lowry Olafson mances have been through his workshops or at various schools across Canada. “I originally started with the adult theme shops, said Olafson. “The kids shops seemed to have taken off all across Canada.” Olafson theme shop’s hone in on his experiences and talents that is effortlessly applied to adults and children that aspire to become more in tune with their creative abilities, and in a sense give back to their communities. Before Olafson begins to transpire a musical theme he creates a team of those willing to

partake in the musical experience by getting a sense of what a community and those living in it mean to them. “I haven’t done many town theme songs,” he said. “However, it’s exciting and I enjoy the process and the challenge that will hopefully have a lasting effect.” Olafson encourages workshops to take ownership of a song allowing each other to become “deeper connected” when working together. “It’s quite a transformative experience,” he

With Olafson’s upcoming collaboration with the town of Vanderhoof he couldn’t be more excited to gain stories in order to facilitate a song shaped by the community. “I love the lasting effect a song has that I write for communities/organizations,” he said. You can see Olafson perform and showcase the Vanderhoof theme song at the upcoming “Concert in the Park” on July 28 starting at 12:30 p.m. at Ferland Park.
