Race track merge likely on hold Jeff Nagel The provincial minister in charge of gaming is dismissing renewed talk of the Lower Mainland’s two horse racing tracks merging at a single site any time soon. Rich Coleman said he now believes the City of Vancouver will soon sign a longterm lease to renew thoroughbred horse racing at Hastings Park, putting to rest talk of that operation joining the Fraser Downs standardbred track at Cloverdale. And he said a new five-year strategic plan for the horse racing industry set for release as early as August will likely call for significant changes but continued operation of both tracks. “I think the recommendation at the end of the day may be to see if they can sustain themselves at their individual

Surrey RCMP say a toxic mix of alcohol, testosterone and poor judgement fueled a violent confrontation at a Cloverdale gas station last week involving about 50 young people on a high school graduation party bus and men in a separate car. Bear spray, a knife and a two-by-four were brandished during the massive brawl, which broke out at the Husky Station at Highway 10 and 176 Street at around 11:30 p.m. July 18. Surrey RCMP were called to break up a large fight that broke out after a car was damaged. “A confrontation occurred between the motorist and the group of youth that were standing in the roadway to the point where the vehicle ended up stopped,” Surrey RCMP Cpl. Drew Grainger said. Five people were injured. Four were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Two people suffered blunt force trauma. Two other people were stabbed, including the driver of the car, a 22-year-
old Surrey man who was later taken into custody. – Black Press

Supernatural on location Sci Fi TV show Supernatural is filming at Cloverdale’s Christ Church today. The historic Anglican church, built in 1884, is being used for at least a one-day shoot on July 26. Located at 16613 Old McLellan Road, Christ Church is surrounded by historic Surrey Centre Cemetery, another spooky spot favoured by movie and TV crews. Supernatural stars Jared Paladecki and Jensen Ackles as brothers Sam and Dean Winchester crisscross the lonely and mysterious backroads in their ‘67 Chevy Impala, hunting down evil supernatural forces they encounter along the way. Season eight premieres Oct. 3.

That would see thoroughbred and standardbred racing allocated separate funding sources to run their individual breeding and other operations, according to business models that fit their needs. “They have a different betting group and different clienteles,” he added. Hastings Park has done well attracting upscale gamblers and urbanites to the races, in part with concerts and other attractions, he said. In contrast, he said attendance for harness racing at Cloverdale’s Fraser Downs is flat and needs to focus on offering a more family-oriented experience. Both tracks are owned by Great Canadian Gaming, but Coleman suggested another change could allow the firm to sell off one or both of the horse racing operations. “It comes down to the track operator – whether they want to be in the business,” he said. “They may want to have the horse racing side separate from them because it’s not their core business.” Cloverdale business leaders have also expressed concern a proposed new casino in South Surrey could threaten Fraser Downs by cannibalizing its business. Coleman confirmed the government wants to develop the new casino at 10 Avenue and 168 Street, replacing a community gaming centre in Newton. “It won’t affect Cloverdale at all,” he said. “There are 500,000 people in Surrey and the market needed Doug McCallum for a casino is between 75,000 and 100,000 people. All our market studies tell us it won’t affect Cloverdale’s business.” Coleman pledged government funding for racing will continue. The province funnels all of its revenue from horse racing to the industry and added more from slot machine gambling in recent years to help stabilize the racing industry. He said the industry needed a secure multi-year outlook in order to give breeders and other participants certainty. Harness Racing BC CEO Doug McCallum is upbeat about the future of the standardbred racing, adding more horses are being bred and wagering is up this year – particularly online. “I have confidence it’s going to stay,” he said, adding a return to a longer racing season has helped. “We’re in pretty good shape this year and going into next year.” As for consolidation at a dual track in Cloverdale, McCallum said it works in Toronto, where both styles sometimes race the same night. But he stressed no business case has been developed, something that might only be pursued if talks with Vancouver fell through or only result in a short-term extension for Hastings. “For a lot of good reasons, Fraser Downs has a good spot to have a dual track,” McCallum said, adding the horse industry is largely in Cloverdale and in the Fraser Valley and would prefer not to drive their horses through Vancouver traffic to Hastings. Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts said the city would be open to the idea if it was recommended by the province and the racing industry. “If it’s feasible, we’d certainly welcome the combination of the two tracks at Fraser Downs,” she said. Vancouver Coun. Raymond Louie said Vancouver has historically supported racing at Hastings Park but is prepared to put the land to new park use on behalf of citizens if the province or the operators decide it no longer works there. “It’s not a situation of support or not support, but let’s see if we can make sure they’re given a fair chance to operate there.” – Black Press

After surfacing, a board might be reduced by as much as 1/4” on each side, but it will still be identified by the original size. Wrestlers haul
The young humpback whale that died on White Rock beach last month starved to death, a necropsy has confirmed. The two- to three-year-old male was found on White Rock’s East Beach around 5 a.m. June 12, and died soon after. The sight drew hundreds of onlookers. The whale’s emaciated body was covered in lacerations and tangled in fishing line. Pacific marine mammal coordinator Paul Cottrell said July 17 the whale died from starvation. Cottrell described the line tangled around the mammal as pelagic longline gear that likely originated in the U.S. or Asia. “It is not Canadian,” he said. A veterinary pathologist earlier said the wounds were consistent with lacerations caused by rope. The line “would have interfered with the ability of the animal to normally use its baleen to feed,” Stephen Raverty told Black Press in June.

Fears calmed over casino
By Alex Browne A meeting with B.C. Lottery Corporation officials appears to have calmed fears of Cloverdale business leaders that a proposed South Surrey casino would “cannibalize” existing gaming business – for now, at least. Brian Young, president of the Cloverdale and District Chamber of Commerce, told Black Press the July 16 meeting – in which representatives met with BCLC’s vice-president of casino and community gaming Jim Lightbody and manager of public affairs Greg Walker – had provided assurances the planned casino would not offer competition to Cloverdale’s Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino. “It was a very good sales pitch,” Young said of BCLC’s position on the new casino, proposed as part of a 200-suite hotel and convention centre planned for 10 Avenue and 168 Street. “The BCLC are claiming the casino proposal will not take away business from Fraser Downs, and they say they have the studies to prove it – and that’s great.” However, Young issued a news release on behalf of the chamber, noting that representatives still do not understand why the location of the new facility was chosen, “as it appears not to meet any of the criteria and is located very close to existing gaming facilities (within 15 minutes of three other facilities).” But Young said the chamber is not interested in pursuing that issue, particularly in light of BCLC promises that it will continue to fully support Fraser Downs and that the new casino will draw from a different customer base. “For us, all we’re concerned with is that Fraser Downs is the primary casino in Surrey, and they have assured us that it will be equal in size to the other one – which means it will be equal in profits.” In his news release, Young said anticipated benefits to Surrey would be “substantial” – the total revenue from gaming will more than double, as Fraser Downs grows and the new facility opens. Fears about the impact of the new casino on Fraser Downs’ business had led to an impassioned plea for support of the existing facility by chamber executive director Bill Reid at the June 30 Cloverdale BIA annual general meeting. ‘We’re not taking this lying down,” he said, calling on stakeholders to be ready to march on city hall or BCLC offices. At its last meeting, the chamber board voted unanimously to support Fraser Downs as the “primary gaming facility in Surrey.” Cloverdale BIA president Lyle MacMillan also weighed in, saying in a letter to BCLC the board felt a destination casino in South Surrey would “cannibalize Fraser Down’s ability to survive in the marketplace.” The Surrey Board of Trade and South Surrey and White Rock Chamber of Commerce have both voiced support for the South Surrey proposal.

Many of the vehicles are from the Bob King collection, a colourful trucking company owner whose wife eventually donated them to B.C. premier W.A.C. Bennett. “All of this gives people a reason to come together, to take care of part of our history.” The renovations have cost about $25,000, covered thanks to fundraising, work in kind, and private donations. Cobra Electric paid for the roll up door. Unitow and Partel Towing helped move the vehicles, he said. “There’s a real passion to take care of these vehicles and find a proper home for them.” The City of Surrey agreed to allow the Surrey Heritage Society to use the building – on the understanding that the society will look for a permanent home down the road. “Now we have a home for the heritage society, we can start to fundraise and do other projects,” Orazietti said. “It’s a base.” The society has

But already there have been serious offers from private collectors who would consider donating if there was a permanent display space. “That’s why this thing has enormous potential.” The society, which is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of heritage assets in the City of Surrey, also envisions working as an umbrella organization with other heritage groups. Surrey Heritage Society members – who include prominent local businessman Bruno Zappone – believe acquiring the collection will be a good fit for Cloverdale, and bolster the historic town centre as a heritage destination.
Some of the trucks will be on display during the 9th annual Cloverdale Blueberry Festival Aug. 4. Locations include 56A Avenue at 176 Street, Brick Yard Station, and possibly Clover Square Village.
