Doubts raised over scrap metal rule changes

New B.C. regulations clamping down on metal theft are now in effect but nobody’s predicting the scourge will be wiped out any time soon. “I don’t think much will change. They can legislate us to death — and they are — but law breakers will always find a way to be law breakers,” said Terry McHale, co-owner of Langley’s West Coast Metals. “Thieves will just get more creative, paint it, chop it finer. These are pretty desperate people. We are here at this level, with a provincial bylaw, because there is no punishment for criminals in a court of law.” Scrap metal buyers now must keep a daily log of their purchases and suppliers, who have to provide identification, be registered and can only be paid by cheque for amounts over $50. McHale said that cheques will be quickly cashed at any cheque cashing business. McHale said he has met with the inspector who is overseeing the changes, and it looks like he will have to hire someone full-time just to keep the daily log. “We do a couple hundred transactions a day,” he said. The Metal Dealers and Recyclers Act aims to plug gaps in the patchwork of different municipal bylaws drawn up by cities to try to combat wire theft. While bylaws have helped reduce unscrupulous salvage metal buying in a dozen Lower Mainland cities, wire and other objects are still pilfered in those areas and then resold where no bylaws exist. Despite having a bylaw, the City of Surrey alone incurred nearly $3 million in losses last year and media stings have found spotty compliance among local dealers.

At West Coast, high resolution video is taken of the person selling, of their vehicle, licence plate and of the materials brought in. “We don’t attract the bad guys.” West Coast Metal has received awards from the City for its vigilant work on deterring stolen wire. Telus pegs its losses to metal thieves at $16 million last year and the firm is averaging an incident each day so far this year. “We hope it will be a turning point in the battle against metal theft in B.C.,” Telus vice-president Dave Cunningham said of the new law.

Neighbours who were alerted by the smell of smoke called 911 early on Tuesday morning. By the time firefighters arrived from Walnut Grove fire hall smoke and flames were billowing from a room above the garage. Calls about the blaze at 8992 203B St. were reported at 2:16 a.m., said fire department spokesman Pat Walker. PRESENTS Business owners: Is your lease protected? Often the location of a business is key to its success. Perhaps it’s in a mall with lots of foot traffic or in an area with little competition. Or it may simply be prohibitive for the tenant to move because of his very substantial investment in immovable leasehold improvements, or because he has locked in a very favourable lease rate. These benefits often form a substantial part of the value of his business, which someday the tenant may wish to sell. In these circumstances, it’s critical for the tenant to protect his lease. If the term of the lease is for more than three years, this means registering it at the Land Title Office. Failure to do so could result in the loss of the lease if the landlord experiences financial difficulties and stops servicing his mortgage, or alternatively, sells the property to someone else who wants to lease the space to someone else. A recent case by the BC Supreme Court illustrates this risk. It involved a tenant in a Victoria hotel property (who leased restaurant, banquet and related facilities) and a sub-tenant (who sub-leased space for a pub). Both the tenant and sub-tenant essentially had five-year leases with renewal options. Those leases were not registered. The hotel owner then took out first and second mortgages from lenders, who were fully aware of the unregistered leases. The mortgages were registered at the Land Title Office, as is customary. A few years later, the hotel owner stopped making mortgage payments. The lenders started foreclosure proceedings. The first mortgage lender had a buyer interested in the hotel who wanted vacant possession. So the lender decided to evict the tenant and sub-tenant, even though their leases hadn’t run out. The tenant and sub-tenant wanted to stay. Legal proceedings were brought to determine who had priority. The court was asked to reconcile two conflicting rules. The first is a statutory
provision that says a lease of longer than three years must be registered in the Land Title Office to be binding on a subsequent purchaser or mortgagee of the property. The second rule is essentially an equitable one holding that a purchaser or mortgagee who is aware of an unregistered lease cannot use the statutory rule to act in a manner which is fraudulent or contrary to community standards of morality. The court said that the existence of a fraudulent intent must be determined when the purchaser or lender acquires its interest in the property. If they were aware of the unregistered lease and intended to use the statutory provision to evict the tenant, the court will generally bar them from doing so. But, here, the lender had no intention of displacing the tenant when the mortgage was first registered. Rent from the tenant was helping the owner service the mortgages. It was only when the owner defaulted on the mortgages that the lender had to consider other uses for the property that didn’t include the tenant. The lender used his statutory right to obtain title and vacant possession of the hotel, without regard to the unregistered tenancy. The court decided this wasn’t a fraudulent abuse. For tenants, the bottom line is very important: if your lease term is for more than three years, and if the loss of your lease would have a seriously negative impact on your business, then you should protect yourself by having proper legal representation and ensuring that your lease is registered. The lack of public toilets at the new Park and Ride caused a stink on council on Monday. But then, like a breath of fresh air, Councillor Kim Richter suggested that the Township strongly urge TransLink to install a Portland loo — or two — on the 9.11 acre site in the 20200 block of 86 Avenue. A Portland loo is a portable toilet, the wall panels, doors and roof all made of heavy gauge steel with vandal-proof bolts and screws. The toilet fixture itself is like those in prisons — designed to withstand destruction. Even the toilet roll dispenser is durable and vandalproof. The hand-washing station is on the exterior, to deter illicit activity, and the lighting is solar powered. Council members expressed surprise that the park and ride, which will have space for 666 vehicles, including for kiss-andride and disabled drivers, but no washrooms. Washrooms are not desirable because of things that happen in washrooms in public places, Mayor Jack Froese commented.

The president of the Langley Teachers Association wants to represent the NDP in Victoria. Gail Chaddock-Costello announced on July 23 that she will seek the nomination for the party in the Fort Langley-Aldergrove. The seat is currently held for the Liberals by Rich Coleman. A resident of Fort Langley since 1995, Chaddock-Costello joined the Langley School District in 1999. She is married to a fellow educator, George Costello. They run the Cranberry Country Bed and Breakfast in Fort Langley. She has been active in the BCTF and the LTA. In 2009, Chaddock-Costello Gail Chaddock- run for the NDP, finishing second behind Coleman. Costello “I have always been a NDP supporter, and I have remained on the NDP executive since 2009, attending the National NDP Conference in Halifax in 2010, the Provincial Conference in 2011 and numerous regional and local meetings and events,” she said. When she ran in 2009, she pledged that if the NDP formed the next government she would make poverty and homelessness front and centre as an MLA. She said at the time that she was shocked at the high number of children living in “appalling” conditions. As a long-time teacher in the Langley School District, Chaddock-Costello knows there are poor children, children who come to school hungry and who don’t have clothing appropriate for the weather. The same children who miss field trips and book sales because their parents can’t afford extras. Glen Valley residents are keeping the pressure on Township council to retain 25 acres of forest that are currently listed for sale. Two weeks ago council caved in to public demand and agreed to take an adjoining 21 acres of forest off an auction website, but Mayor Jack Froese said that the Township would go ahead with plans to sell the five five-acre parcels near 84 Avenue and 260 Street. Several residents returned to council on July 23 meeting, urging the Township to stop the sale. “I urge you again, please give time, thought and room for public dialogue before making a rash decision or wielding a pen,� Hillary Ruffini told council. “The conifer and mixed forest in Glen Valley is the last accessible area where you can see and feel what Langley pioneers faced,� she said, noting that 130 years ago most of Langley was a vast conifer forest. “They give people more of a touch with the past than old photos could ever do,� Ruffini said adding that the land is a mere five minutes from Fort Langley and the three museums that honour the community’s pioneers. Scott Perry pointed to Stanley Park as an example of the foresight of our founding fathers which has given an abundance of returns over the years. He noted that shortly after a windstorm destroyed many trees in Stanley Park in 2006, $10 million was raised from private donations to restore the park. In fact, Perry pointed out, the actual economic loss attributed to the trees was only $1 million. The sale of the Township’s forested inventory in Glen Valley is tied to the purchase of the Aldergrove Elementary School site.The municipality had hoped to use $2 million from the sale to finance the project which is part of a plan to build a pool, ice rink and recreation centre costing approximately $33 million. When Froese announced that the sale of the 21 acres would not proceed, he challenged residents to come up with the shortfall. Perry revealed that a number of people committed to protecting the land have come up with a plan to meet that challenge. They propose the formation of a non-profit organization, Watchers of Langley Forests, to facilitate the process. He said that WOLF would approach

The regulations cover not just wire — the main target of thieves — but other specific metal objects like traffic lights, signs, sewer grates and metal grave markers. The new law was a long time coming — municipalities and utilities had been lobbying for action since 2006. Questions abound over what use police will be able to make of the information collected by buyers to pursue suspected thieves. Asked later why the Township would consider building an outdoor pool in a temperate rain forest climate which leaves a pool unused for about eight or nine months of the year, Leavers said that Aldergrove residents had a strong attachment to Aldergrove Lake, and continue to attendand enjoy the outdoor pool in Parkside. The Aldergrove Pool Committee strongly supports an indoor facility. The Al Anderson Memorial Pool, an outdoor facility in Langley City, opened on May 11 and will close on Aug. 31.

Aldergrove residents keen to have their own public swimming pool will be invited help decide on the design — but they will have to be patient because the facility itself is not expected to be open until 2015. The Township has proposed a pool, indoor ice rink and recreation centre on the site of Aldergrove Elementary School, which was closed at the end of 2007. Most of the school will be demolished and only the section that holds heritage value would be retained. It faces Fraser Highway. These are the two choices council will ask the public to consider: Option 1: $34.8 M — Six-lane pool indoor pool for year-round use; fitness rooms above change rooms; relocation of Aldergrove Library from Kinsmen Centre to the Heritage schoolhouse; multipurpose rooms, larger lobby and adjacent food service. Option 2: $33.4 M — Six-lane outdoor pool in park-like setting, more multi-purpose rooms, larger lobby, renovation of old
school for library. Parks, recreation and culture director David Leavers stated in a report that the new aquatic centre will follow the permanent closure of two aging facilities: the outdoor pool in the Parkside neighbourhood, and the Aldergrove Arena on 272 Street. The costs associated with these facilities would be transferred to the new centre which would also serve as an urban substitute for the man-made lake at the regional Aldergrove Lake Park. The lake has been drained and will not be replaced. Should council decide to transfer the library from the Kinsmen Centre to the school site, the Township would pursue leasing opportunities for the latter, using lease revenue to help finance the operating costs of the new centre. Leavers noted that because of Aldergrove’s population, a new pool will not attract the number of residents that use the Township’s two indoor facilities, the Walnut Grove Rec Centre, and the Blair Rec Centre. The face of tragedy

t may still be a few years down the road, but it looks like Aldergrove will finally be getting its long-awaited aquatic centre. Exactly what it will look like remains to be seen, but at Monday night’s meeting Township Council narrowed the choices to two options, which the public will be asked to consider. The first calls for a six-lane indoor swimming pool, along with a range of amenities, that would cost an estimated $34.8 million to build. The second design is for an outdoor pool — also six lanes wide, and also with a few other bells and whistles — at a cost of $33.4 million. A committee, made up of area residents who have been pushing the Township to move ahead on a pool for the community, wants the Township to put a lid on it. A covered pool, they say, is the better option. And they’re right. It only makes sense to build an indoor facility, because an outdoor pool, while a lot of fun in the summer sun, is a bit of a white elephant the rest of the year. The cost difference of $1.4 million to build, is a drop in the bucket, really, when one considers the overall cost and the difference in the amount of use one will get over the other. Take the City of Langley, for example. It operates Al Anderson Memorial Pool, an outdoor swimming facility which is open roughly four months of the year, from May to August. And while it’s a popular place to gather during the summer, during the remaining eight months it sits empty. While City residents have the option of popping over to the Blair pool or grabbing a bus to Walnut Grove, that’s a little tougher to do in a community as poorly served by the transit system as Aldergrove is. Having a local facility that is potentially open just a third of the year is only marginally better than having nothing at all. Families without vehicles and teens without drivers’ licences will be left in the exact position from September to April as they are now — with no easy means to go for a swim. And for those who really treasure the opportunity to swim in the great outdoors, both Langley City and the City of Abbotsford have facilities a few miles down the road in either direction. Then again, there may be a bit of middle ground to be had. Designers can always come up with something similar to the Walnut Grove facility, which boasts a retractable wall that can be opened wide to allow fresh air to circulate on sunny days. Once it’s built, the new Aldergrove pool will no doubt be a splashy facility. We say, top it off with a roof and make it a year-round place to play.

ews on the street lately has been pretty grim. Twelve people shot to death in a Colorado movie theatre last Thursday. Two people, including a 14-year-old girl, killed at a Toronto house party, just weeks after two died in a shooting at the same city’s Eaton Centre mall. Closer to home, four people – including three from the same family – died after a mudslide swept through Johnson’s Landing in rural B.C. July 12. And Friday morning, police confirmed the body of a young woman was found near the Nicomekl River in South Surrey. The tragic and heart-wrenching list is enough to make one’s head spin; to make some question what is going on in the world, in their community and even in their neighbour’s backyard. It may even give some pause; hesitation to do things that normally would be done without a second thought, for fear of being added to that ugly list. Tragedy, we know, is not a new thing. It can be accidental or the result of incomprehensible intent. It leads to front-page newspaper stories, headlined television broadcasts, movies and bestselling biographies. Sometimes, tragedy will beget tragedy – a family member distraught by the death of a loved one decides to take his own life; friends angered by the shooting death of a close pal take justice into their own hands, triggering further violence, loss and grief. But, amidst all the pain and anger and frustration of the senselessness, should we stop living our daily lives? It may seem like a good idea, at least in the blurred aftermath. After all, no one person or community is immune to senseless tragedy. Why not lower the odds where possible? To say that taking that stance would be a greater tragedy than all the deaths of recent days would sound ridiculous. But there’s no question that actually taking that stance would only compound what has happened. It would show those who perpetuate such acts that they are indeed powerful. It would teach our children to be afraid, and there is nothing to gain from that. There may not be any good in what has happened of late. But why make it worse?

Public and private health care can and should co-exist in B.C. Editor: Re: public vs private health care clinics. How do our tourists access health care when they are visiting B.C.? Surely, they can’t go on our ridiculous waiting lists. We spend millions trying to attract tourists — as the huge cost of the 2010 Olympics was intended to showcase our province and appeal to visitors. Metro Vancouver is an international port region, so you would think we could make our health care more accessible with a healthy mix of private care. Wouldn’t private, for-profit clinics be the most ideal for this purpose, as well as relieving more pressure on the inadequate public system? Because of our dysfunctional public system, more than 9,000 B.C. residents and more than 9,000 Albertans annually choose to avoid growing waiting lists, seek more accessible private healthcare in the USA
and are willing to pay for it. Evidently, Germany, Switzerland and other European countries have almost 50 per cent competing private/public systems with higher quality care and very low waiting times, at comparable costs. It’s not as if we have to re-invent the wheel. It’s no secret that the unions have a stranglehold on the public system with big, self serving and political interest in preventing private health care from gaining ground. It’s recognized that WCB and other productive workers cases are considered essential (for our safety and the economy) and allowed to jump the queue, which prolongs others’ waits. Why shouldn’t you be able to spend your own money on your own health care for quality of life and/or to fend off the ‘death panel’ who will decide that the

limited rationed public resources should go to someone younger? Our current anti-capitalist system is like something you would expect in a communist country, which is why we need better political leadership that will represent us overtaxed, unimportant citizens. Personally, in our public system, I waited nine months from the time of diagnosis of a bothersome hernia treatment (which is considered a routine operation). Kudos to Dr. Brian Day — who operates two private clinics — for championing the issue of unattainable health care due to long and growing waiting lists. He is willing to challenge this all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada at his expense and we should support him. Roland Seguin Langley
Editor: As a grandmother, I am concerned about all these young lives lost due to drowning. It makes me very sad, and mad too. It is preventable. People have to use their brains. No matter how high fences are, when you are around water, make sure kids and toddlers are wearing a life jacket. If they fall in, they will be floating, and safe and alive. That’s what we did with our children and grandchildren. Tragedies can happen too fast. When buying a pool, make sure you buy some life jackets for your children as well. Enough demand for Fort development?

Editor: I couldn’t agree more with Andy Schildhorn’s statement (The Times, July 5). I was born and raised in Fort Langley and slowly have seen it go from a village to part of Metro Vancouver. People move here for the quaintness of the village, they then want all the amenities such as a Starbucks, McDonalds recreation centres, etc. The retailers of Fort Langley come and
go. There are always empty shops. I don’t see the need for such a large building on the corner of Glover and Mavis. Do they have people willing to rent these offices and shops, or will they sit empty for months as well? Might be better to send green waste to dump Editor: Over the past years, the Langley municipality has been bringing in green projects. I know they are trying their best but are not using their common sense. They are trying to save money and not really thinking down the road. We have been asked to cut our garbage down by putting more into recycling and The

But now, with us putting grass and older foods into a completely different recycling container they are not going to go to the dump. I’m not a specialist in this, but wouldn’t the grass and the food products that we do put in the garbage help with breaking

Langley City Council was talking trash at its Monday night meeting, voting in favour of reducing municipal garbage pick up to once every two weeks, instead of weekly. The change may seem like a decrease in service, but City residents will now be able to recycle kitchen organics with their green waste as part of the new plan, said City manager Francis Cheung. Both recycling and green waste will continue to be picked up once a week. “Bi-weekly pick up is being implemented in a number of communities to encourage recycling and green waste,” said Gary Vlieg, City director of engineering. “Tipping fees are set to increase from $107 to $121 per tonne and any waste we can divert from the landfill is a benefit.” But since residents of the City have been recycling less each year, City staff are being conservative in their estimates of the volume of kitchen scraps people are likely to recycle.
By their estimates, the reduction of garbage pick up will actually cost the City $12,000 more. This could change if residents hit a target of 35 per cent of kitchen waste being diverted from the landfill. “This is a reduction of service. I like having garbage pick up once a week and will be voting against this,”said councillor Ted Schaffer. He was the only one to vote against the changes. Councillor Dave Hall said he was in favour of less garbage pick up and more recycling, but couldn’t understand why it would cost taxpayers more. “Finance it in a manner so it is the same or cost less,” suggested Hall. “We have a $530,00 surplus in our budget, so we can find the savings.” Currently, residents can put out two, 80-litre cans per week for garbage and no limits for recycling. It costs $2 for each additional can. Staff also recommended that the contract with garbage pick up contractor Emterra be extended up to two years. The City asked to Emterra to
provide quotes for how much it would cost to keep the status quo; to stay the same, but add matrress pick up; to reduce green waste collection to seven months a year (May to November); to go bi-weekly on everything, providing for organics collection has the potential to reduce costs by removing it from the garbage stream at $121/tonne to $53 per tonne. In 2011, 2,010 tonnes of garbage was picked up from single family homes and 1,412 tonnes of recycling from both single and multi-family were picked up last year in Langley City. According to 2011 Metro Vancouver waste study, 39 per cent of garbage from single family and 32 per cent from multifamily can be classified as food waste. The solid waste budget for the City for 2012 is $976,730. According to the report, it appears less garbage is being produced by residents from 2009 to now. But recycling is down considerably since its peak year of 2009. The City will roll out an information campaign on the changes later in the year.

Township asked to trade traps for non-lethal beaver control methods NATASHA JONES Times Reporter
The beaver is known as Canada’s national animal and, as a dam builder, is one of nature’s most innovative and imaginative creatures. But the rodent is a victim of its own engineering mastery. Beavers cause flooding when their homes, built from twigs and sticks held together with mud which hardens in cold weather, form dams in ditches, streams, lakes and ponds. This can lead to flooding which in turn can impact roads and farmers’ fields. To counter this, traps are set and in many cases, the rodents are left to die. Township council has now been asked to support a pilot project to replace traps with non-lethal alternatives to save beavers and other animals. Lesley Fox, executive director of the Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals, asked council to support the project, not only to protect wild animals, but domestic animals as well. “Our biggest concern is that every year we get dozens and dozens of calls from people whose dogs are caught in the

Fox explained that when dams are removed, beavers are forced to move on to build another lodge, at the loss of more trees. The APFBA wants to team with the Township to use alternatives approaches which would cost the municipality nothing. Using volunteers from the
association, safer means of trapping would be adopted. One is a device that fits over the edge of a culvert. It still allows beavers to build their home, and water is allowed to flow freely through the culvert. These devices cost between $300 and $800 and last for 10 years. Speaking to council after Fox’s presentation on June 11, Sharon Stephenson supported the move. “Trapping animals is inhu-
man as they die a slow and terrifying death. “Traps are impossible to escape from,” she said. Council referred the issue to staff to provide non-lethal options for managing wildlife. The Township currently has no legislation in place to ban traps on public or private property. In 2007, the Fur-Bearer Defenders expressed concern that 50 beavers had been “cruelly trapped and killed” in the Township the previous year. At a September, 2007 meeting, majority of council refused to back Councillor Kim Richter’s motion to lobby Victoria to remove the restriction on relocating the rodents, and that in the interim, the Township find more humane ways to kill them. Richter suggested that beavers be euthanized, just like the Township euthanizes cats and dogs (by lethal injection) at its animal shelter. Richter remarked at the time that beavers don’t always die a quick death in the traps which are set underwater, but die from drowning. “If we have to kill them, we at least should kill them more humanely,” she said.

“Begin a journey around the world,” says the voice of Langley City’s head gardener Aaron Billard through the speaker of a smartphone. Billard’s voice is heard in Langley City’s newest technology, launched earlier this month, offering a portable audio tour of Sendall Gardens greenhouse through people’s cellphones. Grade 3 Douglas Park Community School students were the first to try out the experience, scanning a smartphone over the Quick Response bar code set up
at each plant or tree, setting off a voice that describes the history and facts about each plant. “This is the generation that utilizes this technology. When I asked them if they knew how to use a bar code on a smart phone, I couldn’t believe most of them did,” said City parks manager Len Walters. He admits that up until four months ago, he didn’t really know what an app was. “This really was a great way for us to highlight the information the Friends of Sendall Gardens had gathered on each of the tropical plants,” said Walters. Even though the technology
was slow to work for some users, including the mayor, the kinks appear to have been worked out. The Trail Talker application is available to smartphone users providing information about the 14 exotic plant species grown inside the building located inside the public gardens just off 50 Avenue. Mike Hamel of Trail Talker Information Systems Inc. created the audio tour and modeled it on a similar trail tour in Chilliwack. The cost to the City for the service is $5,000 per year. However, half of that amount will be covered by the Friends of Sendall Gardens Greenhouse.

A five-year-old male Rothschild giraffe checks out its new home at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. The animal was purchased from Ontario to be a companion for the zoo’s lone male giraffe, Jafari. The zoo’s other two giraffes died last November.
The Greater Vancouver Zoo has a new giraffe to be a companion to Jafari, its lone male, which lost both his four-year-old son and the mother of his child within a one week span last November. The new, 1,700pound (770 kg) animal travelled more than 4,000 kilometres from the African Lion Safari in Cambridge, Ont. to be with the zoo’s male giraffe, Jafari, after Jafari’s mate passed away in November. So, how do you transport a 13-foot (four metre) tall animal? The giraffe came to Aldergrove in a specialized animal transport trailer, said Greater Vancouver Zoo manager Jody Henderson. Staff will name the five-year-old male soon but in the meantime the Rothschild giraffe is integrating well with his new friend, said Henderson.

The new male is used to being around other male giraffes, as he was in a bachelor herd at the African Lion Safari. Giraffes are herd animals in their native African savannah. The zoo has been looking for a companion for 12-yearold Jafari since last November. Amryn was born on Oct. 18, 2009 at the zoo. His mother Eleah and father Jafari were doing well as a family. But then Amryn was found dead outside his pen in November, 2011. One week later his 23-year-old mother, Eleah, died. Henderson said the necropsies done on both giraffes were inconclusive as to what killed them. Jafari has welcomed his new friend with lots of neck hugs, nose sniffing, a few horn butts and plenty of giraffe vocalization through the barrier fence that separates them while they are getting used to each other, said Henderson. The sections to which the new giraffe has access will be changed accordingly until it is shown that he is acting comfortable within each area, and is at ease with Jafari. GIRAFFE FACTS: Giraffes are one of the world’s tallest land mammals. They are known for their long necks, long legs and spotted patterns (each of them very unique markings). Males may grow to be 5.5 m (18 ft) and weigh 800 to 1930 kg (1,764 - 4,255 lbs). Giraffes have seven vertebrae in their neck just like humans but their neck can weigh up to 272.16 kg (600 lbs). They also have an extremely long tongue 45.72 cm (18-20 in). In addition, they have an exceptionally large heart and it must work against gravity to pump blood up to the head when it is erect. The heart is approximately 61 cm (24 in.) long, weighs 11 kg (25 lbs), and can pump 60 to 75 litres (16-20 gallons) of blood per minute.

Visitors to Fort Langley National Historic Site are invited to travel back in time 200 years, to learn more about the fiery conflict that shaped the nation — the War of 1812. An exhibit, on display inside the Visitor Centre at Fort Langley National Historic Site until Aug. 7, features interactive technology such as touch screens, videos, trivia games, and the chance to play with on-screen special effects that recreate the smoke, flames and ice that soldiers of the conflict endured. The War of 1812 was a defining chapter in Canadian history. It took the combined efforts of English and French-speaking militias as well as Aboriginal Canadians, together with British military forces, to succeed in defeating the American invasion. The war laid the foundation for Confederation and the cornerstones of many of Canada’s political institutions. Visitors are also invited to take part in two interpretive programs featuring a War of 1812 theme. • Memoirs of a Young Soldier: Musket blasts take you back to the 1800s, where you will meet Pte. Charles Manley, and hear the dramatic account of his experience as a soldier during the War of 1812. Memoirs of a Young Soldier is offered with the 12 o’clock gun program on Fridays and Saturdays. • Soldier Life Children’s Program: For the younger crowd, the dashing Pte. Charles Manley invites you to march like a soldier, gallop like a horse and build a house, just like a Royal Engineer. Experience the life of a soldier from the War of 1812 to the Royal Engineers who helped build British Columbia. Soldier Life is offered Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. and again at 1 p.m.

Appia Development able to start sales
SOLO District gets city approval Appia Development’s newest community has been given the green light by the City of Burnaby to begin sales, which it did on Saturday, July 21. “We’ve already had an overwhelming response from people all around the Lower Mainland about SOLO District,” says Appia President Jim Bosa. “We’ve had several thousand people visit our sales centre to preview the units over the past few weeks. We’re now excited to be able to start selling.” Short for South Of Lougheed, SOLO will include 1,400 suites in four towers ranging from 38 to 55 storeys, a Whole Foods, large rooftop garden, pedestrian pathways, elevated dog park and other
commercial and retail spaces, among other things. The Brentwood SkyTrain station is right across the street. “We firmly believe that SOLO District is poised to change the way we live in the Lower Mainland,” says George Wong of Magnum Projects. “SOLO District will have everything anyone needs within a short distance. It was important that this home pulls at your heart strings. It has to make your heart go pitter patter.” The Prize Home can be viewed at the PNE from Aug. 18 onwards, or on Aug. 5 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are $25 for 5 or $50 for 15. PNE Prize Home makes your heart go pitter patter by Kerry Vital
The Pacific National Exhibition is bringing in the big guns for this year’s PNE Prize Home, built by Britco Structures and featuring furniture from Lane Home Furnishings. The home was designed by Jillian Harris, a former star of The Bachelorette, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Canada’s Handyman Challenge. She will next be co-hosting Love It or List It Vancouver. Recently she has been busy designing homes all over the U.S. and Canada, but the PNE Prize Home is close to her heart after living in Kelowna and Vancouver. “I wanted to do something locally,” she says, adding that it seemed like a fun project and she was looking forward to being able to have creative freedom to design the home, which will be located at the Sun Peaks Resort. The over 3,000-square-foot house includes three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a 20-foot vaulted ceiling, among many other beautiful features. Designing the PNE Prize Home presented a bit of a challenge for Harris. “The home has to appeal to everyone,” she says. “It’s going to be someone’s home away from home.” She took inspiration from the classic Hudson’s Bay blanket, and aimed for a shabby chic feel.
“I tried to integrate modern details,” she says. “I was able to be more whimsical and edgy with this home because it’s a vacation home, instead of something they’ll live in every day.” And whimsical it is, with a dedicated sports room on the lower level with a ski-in ski-out entrance and a sleep loft featuring four bunk beds and an interior Juliet-style balcony looking over the bottom floor. The master bedroom is going to be seriously comfortable, with a walk-in closet and amazing ensuite bathroom with a huge soaker tub, glittery chandelier, dual vanities and a large shower stall. A balcony is located off of the master bedroom as well, so you’ll have plenty of space to enjoy the view. Downstairs, the kitchen is a gourmet’s dream, with stainless-steel appliances and lots of counter space. The walk-in wine cellar is a work of genius, though Harris says it was a bit of a hard-sell for her crew. “It has a real wow factor,” she says, adding that it’s her favourite part.

An Abbotsford man is the lone B.C.cyclist taking part in the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride. Bob Ahuja will join 27 other riders as they cycle from Vancouver to Halifax as part of the ride in September.The riders are split into two teams who will take turns cycling. Each individual will ride at least 22,000 kilometres. Ahuja was at the Willowbrook Sears on July 13, and raised $191.30. The Sears location also held a barbecue fundraiser the following week and donated $460 to Ahuja’s fundraising efforts as each rider needs to raise $25,000. The store has another staff fundrasier planned for today (Thursday) with the proceeds again going to Ahuja.

When is a forecast of blizzards good for British Columbia? Today (July 26) when the community comes together for the annual Dairy Queen Miracle Treat Day. During Miracle Treat Day, Dairy Queen locations from across the province will donate proceeds from every Blizzard sold to B.C. Children’s Hospital, a member of the Children’s Miracle Network — a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children. Last year, Dairy Queen locations in B.C. raised $348,735 for B.C. Children’s Hospital. Dairy Queen has been a supporter of the Children’s Miracle Network since 1984, raising more than $90 million to date. “We are grateful that Dairy Queen organizes the Miracle Treat Day every year to benefit B.C.’s kids, and children across Canada and the U.S.� said Teri Nicholas, president and CEO of B.C. Children’s Hospital. “The funds that Miracle Treat Day raise will help our caregivers meet the urgent health needs of children in B.C. and the Yukon.� Kidney disease strikes families, not only individuals. The increasing interest in wine, culinary and agritourism gives strength to Krause Farms’ proposal to create a fruit winery that will support a winery lounge, licensed patio, picnic area, and special events section. To begin, the winery would produce 15,000 (1,600 cases) of fruit wine from strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries grown at Krause Farms. It’s possible that a small vineyard on the farm would eventually lead to grape wine. While the main focus would be the sale of wine from the
on-site retail store and winery lounge, wine would be offered to other outlets, including government liquor stores. “Although grape wines have a greater universal appeal, fruit wine has traditionally enjoyed great favour with female clients in the 35 to 60 age range,” Krause Farms wrote in their proposal to the Township. “And increasingly fruit wine is gaining popularity with 20-ish customers, as well as with clients, including

But times, if not palates, change, and when a local food processor recently decided to no longer accept strawberries, it forced one berry farmer to look at other ways to keep his property agriculturally viable. With its good soil and proximity to Vancouver and the Canada/US border, Strawberry Hills puts Krause Berry Farms and other area producers in a unique position. As Alf Krause notes, while the urban Vancouver market puts pressure on producers, it also provides an opportunity that no other can. “Our location allows us to pick, process, and deliver our products at the moment they are at their very best,” he said. And while the strawberry may no longer be the pick of the crop, it has a new future in wine. In early July, Krause Berry Farms, which Krause operates with his wife, Sandee, received approval from Township council for a winery lounge that can seat up to 130 patrons. Half the seats would be indoors, the other on a patio. A permit also allows it to establish winery special events area. When the farm layout was first designed, consideration was

The London Olympic Games run from July 27 to Aug. 12 and three athletes with ties to Langley will be representing Canada on the world’s biggest stage. Dorothy Ludwig, who moved to Langley eight years ago, is competing in the 10m air pistol shooting competition. The 33-year-old will compete in her event July 29. This will be her first time competing at the Olympic Games. Her greatest international results include gold at the Pan American Games in 2011, team gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and silver at those same Games. This will be the second Olympic Games for Hawley BennettAwad. The equestrian athlete, who competes in eventing, will represent Canada for a second time, having previously done so in 2004 at the Athens Games. She will do so this time aboard Gin & Juice. In 2004, she was on Livingstone, who has since retired. Bennett-Awad’s event runs from July 28 to 31. The 35-year-old was a member of Canada’s silver-medal winning team at the 2010 World Equestrian Games. Bennett-Awad was born and raised in Langley, but now resides in California. Richard Hortness, a former member of the Langley Flippers Swim Club, will compete as a member of Canada’s 4x100 freestyle relay team.The event runs July 29. The 27-year-old also represented Canada at the 2008 Beijing Games. Born in Medicine Hat,Alta., he grew up in Cloverdale and attended Langley Secondary. He now lives and trains in London, Ont.

In her father’s footsteps Just like her dad decades ago, Dorothy Ludwig is representing Canada at the Olympic Games GARY AHUJA Times Sports
W
hen her father offered the chance to teach his sport, air pistol shooting, Dorothy Ludwig and her younger sister jumped at the chance. It was about 20 years ago and the family was living just outside of Edmonton. Her father, Bill Hare, was retiring from his sport and decided to create a juniors program in Alberta, which his two younger daughters could take part in. “That was the beginning for the shooting experience,” Ludwig said. “That was the big thing; we were both looking for something to do.” A few years later, Ludwig — her married name — attended the Canada Winter Games and got her first taste of where the sport could take her. Ludwig won the team gold and placed fourth or fifth in the individual competition. “That was a big experience. I started thinking maybe I had a future in this sport,” she said. “That is when I started thinking, ‘I can actually do this; I can follow in my dad’s footsteps.’” And the footsteps were definitely big ones to fill as her father attended three Olympics Games for Canada — 1964, 1968 and 1972 — with a best finish of 15th in the 1968 Games. “When you start, you don’t really think I can be an Olympian,” Ludwig said. “You are just doing something for fun.” But here Ludwig is, ready to follow in her father’s footsteps and represent Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Her father passed away in 2005 at the age of 69. “I miss him a lot; he was a big inspiration,” Ludwig said. “He encouraged me and taught me everything I know and always let me choose (what I wanted to do).”

Langley’s Dorothy is representing Canada at the Olympic Games in London in air pistol shooting. “I think the only person that would be more pleased (with my qualification) than me would have been my dad,” she said. “Shooting has always been a family sport for us (and to go to London) makes it all the more special.” Ludwig competes in 10m air pistol shooting, which measures a competitor’s precision shooting. The guns use compressed air and the competitors fire lead bullets either at paper or electronic targets (depending on the competition). From an early age, Ludwig has shown a knack for the sport. “My sister (Lynda Kiejko) would say — and my dad would too — that I have a bit of a gift and I don’t have
to train as hard as other people do to be at the same level,” Ludwig said. But the road has not always been easy, especially in an under-the-radar type of sport like air pistol shooting. “There were definitely times I wanted to give up, but at the same time, I just couldn’t quit, and I am glad I didn’t,” she said. Funding is one challenge as every year, Ludwig has to apply for grants. Compare that to some other countries, like China, and it is night and day, she said, comparing her sport to being a hobby here compared to a profession. “(In China), they eat, sleep and breathe their sports,” Ludwig said. “There is a waiting list and as soon as an athlete fails, there is someone
else there to take their spot.” She makes it clear that she is grateful for the support she does receive. “The grants are helpful — don’t get me wrong — but miniscule,” Ludwig said. “But I appreciate every single grant I have ever gotten.” Ludwig is also grateful for all the support that local organizations such as PacificSport Fraser Valley provide for her and other local athletes, such as free gym memberships. She also knows she could not have done any of this without the support of her husband, Cam and their one-year-old son Erden.

“He is really supportive; I don’t think I could have gotten this far without him,” she said about her husband. “Cam has been helpful and supportive and encouraging.” There is also the support from her mom, Fran Hare, and her older siblings, John Hare and Lorna Idland. Her elder siblings never took up the sport as they were born during the height of their father’s competitive career. Now that she is off maternity leave — Ludwig works as an executive assistant at Power to Change — she juggles her family, work and training. She trains out of the Langley Rod and Gun Club and with her Grande Prairie-based coach, Pat Gustafson.
Ludwig had earned Canada a spot at the London Games thanks to her gold-medal performance at the Pan American Games in Mexico back in October. But she still had to win one more competition to book her ticket to the Olympics. She did so back in March in Calgary, winning by a mere two points but it was bittersweet as Ludwig edged out Kiejko. The third-place finisher was another Alberta shooter, Lea Wachowich, and all three were coached by Hare. “We all started at the same time, we were all trained under my father, and we all grew up in the sport together,” Ludwig said. At the Pan American Games, Ludwig said she entered the competition stress-free and
without expectations. It was her second time at the Games, and she had not trained as much since she was a new mom with a six-month-old. “I took away a big stress factor for myself and just allowed myself to compete rather than worry what the results were going to be,” she explained. “I had to be OK with not winning — of course I wanted to win — and just had to shoot. “So often I have worried and put a lot of pressure on myself and this time I didn’t.” Ludwig was second heading into the finals, but edged out Venezuela’s Maribel Pineda by a tenth of a point for the gold medal. “It is terrible way to lose but a beautiful way to win,” Ludwig said.

Marcus Gordon caught a 77-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds remaining as the Langley Rams defeated the Westshore Rebels 35-30 in pre-season football action at McLeod Park. The Rams hosted the Victoria team in their first pre-season B.C. Junior Football Conference game on Saturday (July 21). The Rebels had forged ahead a few minutes earlier setting the stage for the Rams lategame comeback. Quarterback Jon Roney
connected on the throw to Gordon and the touchdown pass was Roney’s third of the game. He finished 6-for-21 for 132 yards with two interceptions. Greg Bowcott was 4-for-11 for 53 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Malcolm Williams also caught a pair of touchdowns, while Jonathan Carr had the other major. International soccer camp in town The Langley United Youth Soccer Association will be hosting its first international youth summer camp for boys and girls for the ages U8 to U17 divisions from July 30 to Aug. 3. The instructional coaches have been assembled from international clubs which include Chelsea, Hearts,
Boca Juniors, FC Freiberg,Sporting Lisbon and River Plate. These are all world-leading youth academy coaches and scouts from leading international clubs. There will also be a coaching symposium composed of an on-field session followed a few days later by an in-classroom session. The cost

Blaze keep adding to ever-growing trophy case bouncing back with a 10-3 victory. Preston Kokotailo drove in three runs, while Tyler O’Neill, Bill Germaine and Mason Cratty each had a pair of RBIs. O’Neill finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a home run. He finished a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Liam Stroud earned
the victory, allowing one hit over three innings. In the opener, Mitchell Robinson and O’Neill had RBIs. Against Abbotsford, Greg Rodgers drove in three runs. Justin Atkinson earned the win with six solid innings of four hit-ball. Langley’s hopes for a split were dashed when
the Cardinals scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, snapping a 5-5 tie to earn the split. Cratty led the way with a pair of RBIs while Nick Rutckyj, O’Neill and Germaine had one apiece. ••••• Aaron Horanski led the league with a .416 batting average while Tyler

The Trinity Western women’s volleyball team will be representing Canada this fall when the Spartans will play as the Canadian entry in the inaugural U23 Pan American Women’s Volleyball Cup to be contested in Lima, Peru Sept. 2-9. With the Trinity Western men’s team already set to represent Canada in the U23 Pan American Men’s Volleyball Cup, which runs Sept. 25-30 and will be hosted by the Langley Events Centre, it will be an all-Spartans contingent set to don the maple leaf on the international stage this fall. “Our volleyball teams have been given an opportunity of a lifetime to represent Canada and Langley in international sport,” said Trinity Western athletic director Murray Hall. “It’s an honour for both the teams, the athletic department the university.” “I think it’s always an incredible opportunity when you can put your country’s name and colours on your back,” said Spartans coach Ryan Hofer. “But to be able to do that with our team at Trinity Western adds another dimension and element that I’m really excited about. “This is huge for us because the level of competition we’re going to face will be very high and it will set the standard for how we’ll train and how we’ll prepare moving forward.” The U23 Pan American Cup is a new competition created jointly by the NORCECA (North America, Central America and Caribbean) and the South American Volleyball Confederations, and will feature the top teams from these zones. As Canada will not have a national team program with athletes in this age category together at this time of year, Volleyball Canada opted to ask a CIS program to host and participate in the event representing Canada.

Passion wins Challenge Cup The team was competing at the Western Challenge Cup ball hockey tournament from July 12 to 15 in Burnaby and Vancouver. And the rep squad, made up of the top players from the Valley Ball Hockey Association and containing a large contingent of Langley players, scored twice to erase a 3-2 deficit to edge the Delta Giants 4-3 in the championship final. The win wrapped up a perfect tournament for the Passion, who won their pool with a 3-0-1 record. They also beat the Ridge Meadows Renegades 3-1 in the semifinals. Round robin scores included a 3-1 win over Metro, 4-1 over Ridge Meadows and 7-2 versus the Surrey
Scorpions. They also tied their first game of the tournament, 3-3 against the Giants. Mitch Van Geel led the Passion in scoring with five goals and one assist during the round robin and then another three helpers in the playoffs. Shane Carey had six assists through the round robin while Neil Osborne finshed with four goals in the first four games and then added three assists in the playoff round. Also coming up big during the playoff round were Brett Abercrombie with a pair of goals and Jas Kahlon (two goals, one assist) and Cameron McDonald (one goal, two assists) who both had three points in the final two games. Carter Dyck and Trevor Pullen split goaltending duties.

Cyclones ready to hit Regina A Cyclone warning is in effect for Regina. The Fraser Valley Cyclones earned the right to represent B.C. beginning Aug. 2 in the Saskatchewan capital, at the Canadian senior Little League national baseball championships. The Cyclones, made up of players from Langley, North Langley, White Rock, Coquitlam and Whalley, swept the North Shore Monarchs 2-0 in the bestof-three series held over the weekend in Walnut Grove. Fraser Valley won the opener 8-2 and then held on for an 8-7
win in game two to complete the sweep. In the second game, the Monarchs were down by two runs in the final inning and had the bases loaded. But after surrending one run, reliever Aidan Davies shook off a knee injury from a collision at the plate to nail down the final strikeout. Davies relieved starting pitcher Shane Younker, who struck out nine while allowing four hits over six innings.Younker also delivered at the plate with a tworun single in the sixth which snapped the 6-6 tie. He also had a
sacrifice fly earlier in the game. The other Langley ball player in the game, Chad McColm, started that fifth inning comeback with a base hit, and then later scored, the first of four runs in the inning which tied the score. Allen Velten drove in four runs in the first game and then added three more RBIs in game two. Ben McCarthy also drove in a pair of runs in the opener while Max Schriber and Austyn Briggs had an RBI apiece. McCarthy also picked up the victory, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out four.

Junior Blaze close to clinching Five wins in a row — including a doubleheader sweep on Saturday — have the Langley Junior Blaze on the verge of clinching their second straight B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League title. The U16 baseball team defeated the North Delta Junior Blue Jays 4-2 and 8-0 at Mackie Park to improve their record to a league-best 32-7, four games clear of the second place North Shore Junior Twins (24-7). The Blaze have just five games to go in the regular season while the Twins have 13 games still to play before the regular season ends on Aug. 5. In the first game against North
Delta, Langley needed extra innings but won it in the eighth thanks to back-to-back doubles from Andre Pelletier and Matthew Reston. Mitchell Kennedy picked up the win, going the distance while striking out six. And in the second game, Eric Broatch tossed a one-hit gem, striking out seven for the complete victory. Reston paced the offence with three RBIs while Bayley Germain drove in a pair. Langley was scheduled to play Coquitlam last night (Wednesday) after The Times’ press deadline.
