Christina Lake event held despite tragedy KARL YU West Kootenay Advertiser

There was a sombre influence on a recent scheduled homecoming function held at Christina Lake. A local boy who was attending the Pines Bible Camp in Grand Forks had died in a storm-related incident. According to the BC Coroners Service, Richard Fehr, 11, was attending the camp when a wind storm hit and the cabin he was in was crushed by a falling tree. “At around 5 p.m. this afternoon (July 20) there was an incredible wind storm,” Pines Bible Camp Executive Director Gene Krahn told the Grand Forks Gazette on Friday night. The community of Christina Lake also lost power during the storm. The planned home-

coming went ahead even though all had their minds on the tragic passing of young Fehr. The community came together with acts of generosity and ingenuity. Friday night’s wine and cheese reception at the Christina Living Arts Centre was done by candlelight and while Fortis BC had power up by around noon on Saturday,

there wasn’t electricity for a pancake breakfast at the Christina Lake Community Hall in the morning. Fortunately, the Christina Lake Fire Department lent a generator, allowing organizers to go ahead with the breakfast, in fact since people didn’t have power, many headed to the hall for some pancakes, eggs, bacon and coffee. “I think we prob-

ably had more people because of the power outage and (the number) of people coming was fantastic,” explained Christina Lake Community Association President Larry Walker, who estimated the head count for the morning events at 500. Leah Carnahan, Christina Lake Homecoming event co-ordinator, said that the wine and cheese

reception seemed a little more magical especially because there was no electricity. “The power did go out and it was (by) candlelight and the ambience was beautiful, the cheese was great and we enjoyed ourselves,” she said. Christina Lake Fire Chief Ken GresleyJones said the storm’s effect at the Lake paled in comparison to the life lost but his department helping out at the homecoming was just part of what it does. While the chief was away for part of Saturday morning, he was proud of what his team did. “That’s what we do,” Gresley-Jones said. “Christina Lake Fire Department is there for any community emergency and that’s what we do, it’s just normal,” he said.

Crescent Valley auto shop a total loss SAM VAN SCHIE West Kootenay Advertiser

Babe’s Automotive was completely destroyed by fire last Friday morning. The owner of the Crescent Valley shop, Chris Carlson, said he was under a car cutting through an exhaust system when the blade of his saw hit the gas tank. A moment later there was a wall of flame next to him. “The safety vest I was wearing caught fire, so the first thing I was thinking was to get that off,” said Carlson. His co-worker tried to move some of the vehicles away from the flame while Carlson emptied the shop’s fire extinguishers on the burning vehicle.

But they quickly realized the fire was beyond their ability to deal with. Carlson called 911 around 10 a.m. Volunteer fire fighters from Crescent Valley, Beasley and Tarrys commu-

nity fire departments responded. Carlson has been a volunteer with the Crescent Valley fire department for 10 years, so he also helped knock down the flames. “I’ve been to the

scene of many fires, so I know this kind of thing happens,” Carlson said, standing on the back of a fire truck. “I guess maybe it hasn’t hit me how bad it is.” He has minor burns

on his neck. The fire destroyed his shop, as well as eight vehicles, including his family collection of six classic cars. He estimates it’s about $200,000 in damage

Strong winds in Grand Forks late Friday afternoon led to power outages and damage. There were widespread reports of downed trees, wires and poles and collapsed houses along with the outages. “The damage (was) all over the valley, right from North Fork Road, Granby Road through to Carson Road,” explained Grand Forks Fire Rescue Chief Dale Heriot, on Friday evening. He said there were collapsed houses on McCallum View Drive, Carson Road, Almond Gardens East and Pines Bible Camp. Event listing

The program will start as a riding and starting gate practice night with a registration drive and then switch to a race format in the coming weeks. News Sense of alarm increases in regard to river volume in past week Trail briefs Add another foot to the high water level of the Columbia River. With the mighty waterway already flowing at a near record rate, BC Hydro noted that flows increased by one foot over the weekend, with flows cresting at 225,000 cubic feet per second on Sunday.

A Columbia River update Monday, however, noted the river level is coming down. For now. “(The river) is diminishing gradually as Kootenay River flows drop,” read the report for Monday. “It may increase in future but likely not beyond peak flows seen to date.” Tributaries in the central and northern part of the Columbia

River basin showed significant response to rainfall on the weekend but are now receding, said BC Hydro’s stakeholder engagement advisor Jennifer Walker-Larsen in the report. She said the weather forecast called for significant rainfall in the northern part of the basin again early this week and then, hopefully, a respite from the rain.

Thanks to a prestigious scholarship, a J. L. Crowe grad will be taking flight this summer. Alex FarnsworthPhilogene, 18, was accepted into the international air cadet exchange association in Australia this summer and expects to leave for training this Sunday. “He always loved planes and when he heard that the cadets could teach him how to fly, he signed up, explained his mother, Laura Farnsworth. “He worked his way up—first as a glider pilot and then as a power pilot. Alex has been a Trail cadet and J. L. Crowe student for several years and was pleased about receiving one of 10 placements reserved for applicants across the country. In order to apply, he had to demonstrate his involvement in the cadets, good grades and ability to follow orders. He also had to pass an intensive screening contest, but was chuffed when the acceptance letter finally came in the mail. “I was relieved that I received any type of response because I didn’t know if they

would send a letter to me either way, he said. “But when I read it, I was really overjoyed. He will be traveling for two weeks in Sydney and Brisbane and spending time with the cadets in Montreal before he ages out of the program in August, when he expects to apply to become an officer with the cadets and continue flying on the weekends while pursuing a degree. “If I wanted to do this and hadn’t participated in anything else, I probably wouldn’t have got it, he said. At the mere age of 12, Alex had completed basic training with the cadets, a series of leadership courses and an introduction to aviation. But it wasn’t long until he was flying as a glider

and power pilot—he was only 16. “Everybody has a hobby and flying is mine, Alex explained. “This is my last year in the cadet program before I age out and an exchange seemed like a pretty cool thing to do. Alex is eager to meet “like-minded people, see the sights and wrap up his last year in the cadets before entering a fouryear engineering program at McGill. He is looking forward to staying in an Australian barracks every night, visiting the Australia Zoo and touring the Telstra Tower. “Because I’m going into engineering, I think it will be really cool to see the Telstra Tower on Black Mountain, Alex said. “It’s like the Austra-

lian version of Bell or Rogers so I’m looking forward to seeing that. Alex had initially applied for an exchange program in England because his extended family used to live there and sent him gifts by post, which piqued his interest. But he was offered a placement in Australia. He wanted to get the travel-bug out of his system before settling into a degree program. “I was still really happy, he said. “You get three choices when you apply and I got my second so that’s still pretty good. Alex was accepted into an engineering program at McGill University this fall and will have roughly one week to settle into Montreal after his excursion to Australia.

Of West Kootenay it says: “Utterly unknown a few years ago, and with but inadequate means of communication, it has suddenly, through the discoveries of its great mineral wealth, acquired a fame that has reached far-off lands and attracted hither experienced miners and capitalists who, convinced of the capabilities of the country, have remained to aid in its development.” A section entitled “Law and Order” reads: “There is a noticeable absence of rowdyism and crime in all the camps and the tougher element have discovered that

Working within the category of “Mythical Creatures,” artists had a lot of possibilities at their disposal for Sansations 2012, a feature of Castlegar SculptureWalk held last Thursday-Sunday at the Pioneer Arena on Columbia Avenue. Pictured in top photo, Daniel Kloc (L) and Denis Kleine of Nelson with “Maleficent.” Above left are John (L) and Patrick McKinnon with “Ratcatcher,” and above right – Peter Vogelaar (L) and Jordan Mounteer with “Wendigo.” The sand sculptures will remain until time and dehydration dictate otherwise.

Arts and Culture Art Walk 2012 Artist Profile – Sandra Donohue Here is just one of the delightful artists featured this year. Artist Name: Sandra Donohue Exhibit Location: Kalawsky Chevrolet, Buick, GMC (11) Artist City: Robson, BC Medium: Paintings (Representational)

15

Years Active:

Bio: Sandra Donohue started painting seriously in 1997: her love of gardening and flowers inspired her to dabble in watercolour and her weaver’s background gave her confidence to work with colour. After becoming a Federation of Cana-

dian Artists (FCA) member in 2001, the longtime Robson resident was encouraged to stretch her talent in different directions, using different subject matter and media. Now painting in oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolour, Sandra has earned her Associate FCA membership and this fall is launching a children’s

book featuring her illustrations, Hundred Dollar Special, with Salmo author, Kathryn Bourdon. Sandra’s work can be found at the Kootenay Gallery (Castlegar), Artisan (Trail) and during the Columbia Basin Culture Tour studio visits (August 11-12, 2012). Please see colour photo on page A15

Health Revealing the straight dirt on organic produce People often ask me if they should buy organic fruits and vegetables. Some of the common questions I get include: “Are organic foods better for you?,” “Are they worth the extra cost?” or “I want to reduce my exposure to pesticides, which fruits and vegetables have the most residues?” I always start by ensuring people that a diet high in plant based foods has many health benefits including reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other health problems. The benefits of consuming adequate amounts of fruits and veggies outweigh the risk of pesticide exposure. So regardless of whether you choose conventionally grown produce or organic,

the main goal should be to get a minimum of 7-10 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. One serving equals one piece of fruit or vegetable or half a cup chopped. However, if you are looking to reduce your exposure to pesticides and it’s within your budget to purchase organic then I think it’s worth it. It’s even better if you can purchase your organic food from a local source. Choosing local foods and buying organic when possible supports a more sustainable food system and allows the industry to grow. We are entering the time of year where

local food is becoming abundant in our province so take advantage of your local farmers markets.

Author: Simone Jennings, Registered Dietitian

The thing I love about the farmers market is you can talk directly to the person who grows your food! You can inquire about their farming practices and use of pesticides (if any). Some

foods tend to be more heavily treated as they are difficult to grow without getting bugs in them (if you have a cherry tree you probably know what I mean). However, other fruits and vegetables tend to be more naturally ‘bug free’ and require little or no treatment. You can significantly lower your pesticide intake by limiting the most contaminated produce (or buying them organic) and eating more of the least contaminated fruits and vegetables. The Environmental Working Group has recently released the 2012 “Shoppers Guide to Pesticide in Pro-

duce”. The guide can help you determine which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues. It is important to consider this as a general guide, not a hard and fast rule, as pesticide levels on foods can vary depending on where and how they are grown. The list was created based on studies done in the U.S. on local and imported fruits and vegetables. Nearly all of the studies tested produce after it had been rinsed or peeled. To view the extensive list of foods and a downloadable shoppers guide visit www. ewg.org/foodnews/ summary/.

Rossland is full of great things to do over the summer. Despite the downtown construction, shops and restaurants are open for business and bustling as ever. Shops on the north side of Columbia Avenue are mostly negotiable through Sourdough Alley, with most stores having a back entrance. Rossland also has more parking spots than it has ever had before, with most tucked behind buildings. Signs are posted to help you find parking, some of which is located behind the Nelson and District Credit Union, Rossland Hardware and across from the Prestige. Rossland has many vibrant dining options, whether you’re in the mood for pizza, sushi or salads. There are also some great places to grab breakfast and a coffee in the morning. At night, the local pubs offer cool brews, food and the occasional music. Every Thursday through the summer, the Rossland Mountain Market offers fresh produce, baked goods and handmade gifts. Local musicians and entertainers play at the market and each week there is a different act to see. For more info go to www.rosslandfood. com If you’re in the mood for some entertainment, you could check out the Gold Fever Follies’ new show, John Vs. John. It is performed

Tuesday through Saturday through the summer. The local theatre group does two shows one each of those days, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The show runs through to Aug. 25. General admission is $13, children 6-12 $8, five and under free and seniors $10. Go to www.goldfeverfollies.com for more info. Rossland is also the perfect launching point for any biking adventure, with many shops that cater to biking and the outdoor lifestyle in general. There is also shuttle service to different trailheads. The network also serves as a great hiking destination. Rossland also has a great golf course just down the hill. Redstone Golf Course features a full 18 hole course through stunning mountain scenery. More info at redstoneresort.com. For art lovers the Rouge Gallery is a great place to see local artists’ work, with a lot of interesting pieces on display. The gallery is located on the corner of Columbia Avenue and Washington Street. To learn about Rossland’s past, the Rossland Museum offers a unique look back into the history that brought people to the mountain town in the first place. The museum is located at the junction of Highway 3B and 22. For more info go to www.rosslandmuseum.ca.

Rossland is OPEN for business & with more parking than ever! Come check out our many fine shops, services & attractions this summer.

Sports/Community Killjoys live up to their name in pooping party for brutal babes CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter

The Killjoys from Nelson upset the more experienced Babes of Brutality of Salmo 120-118 in a close bout Wednesday night in Castlegar. This was the last

tilt of the regular season for both teams and it is possible that the two teams will meet again in the playoffs which start August 25. There is one more double header on July 28 at the Castlegar Complex.

Winning fair and square The Nelson Disc Break ultimate frisbee tournament title went to Vancouver’s Sole Survivors at Lakeside pitch on Sunday afternoon after they defeated the host Nelson Homegrowns. The weekend tournament featured 10 teams from around B.C. and Alberta. The Sunday final featured the two teams who did not suffer a loss the entire weekend. But in the final, the Vancouver squad proved to be too much for the Homegrowns. Bob Hall photo

Eco-trips wrap with happy kids SUBMITTED

Aug 15, 2012

Wildsight’s Classroom With Outdoors! Another season of eco-field trips for Grade 4 to 7 kids has just wrapped and the numbers are impressive. “Wildsight’s 10 educators just delivered 70 programs to approximately 1,750 kids across the Columbia Basin,” said Monica Nissen, Wildsight’s Education in the Wild manager. “The trips offer experiential, sciencebased learning about ecology and help kids connect with wild natural places in the region.” Nissen said this year—the program’s twelfth—has been a great success.

Sculpture Talk

Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.

‘River’s Edge’ (concrete) Winlaw-based sculptor David Ducharme eventually realized that living in his chosen home for over 20 years still hadn’t taught him all that much about the history of his surroundings. So he did some exploring, for both inspiration and knowledge. A conversation with Sinix’t Nation headman Bob Campbell provided the impetus for his dramatic, appealing entry. At the same time it made him appreciate things in a different light. “I always thought of the Kootenay historical mosaic as primarily being European settlement, mining, and the influences of the Dukhobours,” he says. “Speaking with Bob and others, I learned more about other societies here long before us, the Lakes people. I was inspired to try to capture an aspect of their way of life in ‘River’s Edge’.” Working in an oil/clay mix prior to mould making and casting in concrete, Ducharme has succeeded superbly. ‘River’s Edge’ features the sturgeon-influenced design of the sharply-nosed canoes the Sinix’t and Ktunaxa people used as they travelled the lakes of the area, living nomadic, fruitful lives dictated by nature and the seasons. Ducharme’s work features a canoeist battling his way through rapids, upright, attentive and muscled as he fights the current in his bucking, pitching craft, using only a single pole to navigate with. Trees line the bank in the background, the foreground is all swirling, foaming waves. Framing the canoe edge is a stylized sturgeon tail that binds the piece together figuratively and historically. ‘River’s Edge’ is full of action, gracefully depicting the inherent dangers of everyday life long before the European influx. It’s a way of life that has regrettably vanished. “In my figurative work, I strive to

immerse myself in the characters I am sculpting, exposing the essence, simplicity or intensity of a moment, bringing them to life. I hope to share with the world an appreciation for beauty, as well as everyday reality.” “Working in sand,” – Ducharme is part of the talented brigade of area sand artisans who regularly win awards at events around the world – “ has provided me with a bridge to other mediums. Right now I’m using my increased awareness of the area’s history, particularly the indigenous peoples, to create a

series of works in concrete.” Award-winning sculptures in sand, snow and ice have nurtured his skill, enabling his talent to mature and shine in creating magnificent life depictions in concrete. “The inherent properties of these materials allow the sculptor to render an idea quickly on a monumental scale,” says Ducharme. “I’ve transferred that skill into works that will be more lasting, standing the test of time while celebrating the passage of it.” ‘River’s Edge’ is a testament to this last statement. Horoscope Michael O’Connor

ffor th the

Week

July JJul ul 27, 2012

Tip of the Week: The Sun entered Leo last week and on July 28th will cross paths with Mercury in its retrograde direction. This should manifest as an increase in the drama on both individual and collective fronts. The tempo has already been steadily rising especially since Jupiter entered Gemini, its most challenging sign position, just over a month ago, where it will remain until July 2013. This is especially evident in Europe with the economic crisis. With the Olympics scheduled to get underway this weekend we can expect some excitement from it. In sync with this theme a recent news report stated that the security company hired for this major event, apparently among the most efficient in the world, significantly underestimated their surveillance requirements and have had to call in the military to compensate for the miscalculation. Thus a strong military presence will accompany the fans from all over the world who will be attending the games. Mars in Libra, its most challenging sign position, also contributes its own unique twist. Hopefully, the organizers of the Olympics will be able to override the complications in communications and electrical devices that are likely to occur due to Mercury Rx. Fortunately, Mercury turns Direct on August 2nd prior to the closing ceremonies.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

The ‘heat’ is rising. This can prove to be a good thing, yet perhaps also is causing annoying or even painful friction. We all have our blind spots. These casualties of the ego are common, yet can you see your own? Qualifying your feelings and perceptions, as in ‘I see or experience… it this way’ could go a long way towards offsetting ego clashes so valuable time and energy can be better spent.

A creative cycle is underway. Your home and family are the main stages. You want to make improvements. Others who are not on the same page better clear the way or tune-in. You remain determined to get a lot done. Multi-tasking is likely. Creating more beauty and function and perhaps profitability too are core motivators.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

A big wave of artistic inspiration is washing in. You are in the mood to take a few risks, try new things, and expand your horizons. Depression or outright anger could be experienced if you do not have outlets that meet your specifications. Too much thinking now could lead to worry. Accept there will be revisions to offset stalemating perfectionism.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

Envisioning a brighter future continues. A combination of dreams and ideals are guiding your focus. Weaving adventure into your scope is likely. Cultivating a higher degree of self-reliance feels especially right and important. Balancing feeling secure while simultaneously experiencing a genuine growth/evolution process is a core theme.

Some action in your public and/or professional life is getting you some attention. You may not feel as confident as you would like, however. If so, review your successes from the past and acknowledge that you will rise again. In your dealings with others, keep the end result in mind and assess the full spectrum of your responsibility implied in long term commitments.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

Freedom is the word for you now. Whether it is freedom within or without or freedom from or freedom to, some measure of discipline is required. A clear focus with follow through until your objectives are met is implied. Deciphering what past attitudes, values and/or priorities worked and which did not is important now. Allow for unconventionality.

Building upon new foundations is the call now. The preparation and ground work is ever important in any focus where we seek enduring results. Be willing to take a few risks and while thinking twice and deciding once is ideal, too much thinking can be a problem. Since you are planning for the future, be proactive towards securing a niche that matches your individual style.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

Taking new leads and initiatives is a core theme now. Your focus is getting sharper by the day, backed by ambitions to increase your exposure. Love between friends is a two way street and someone has to initiate contact. Be the one so you can lead the direction or renewed connections. Inspirations and insights from a forgotten past are featured.

A busy time behind the scenes continues. This implies networking to make initial contact and key connections for future prospects. Plant the seed now and trust it will gestate, especially if it is in tune with your destiny. In your communications with others, you may be more inclined to listen and/or ask questions than inform.

Deciphering what constitutes a healthier flow and or lifestyle continues. A main goal is to increase your confidence levels. Creating more harmony and beauty close to home is likely. Getting clear on what you value may not be so easy though. It may be a good idea to be decisive about the small stuff before you tackle larger considerations so you can do so with the clutter cleared.

Sometimes it is better to hold our cards closer. You want more answers yet are less inclined to reveal. Assessing your worth or the value of your skills and/or assets may require that you tune-in to the times better. Breaking free from past patterns and conditioning that you deem restrictive is the deep end theme. Yet somehow you may have to give more to succeed.
