The average Torontonian spends 80 minutes a day commuting in their car. That adds up to about a month out of every year. To drive the point home, Evergreen has enlisted 22-year-old Tanner Zurkoski to live in a Honda Insight—day and night—for four straight weeks. As Zurkoski, formerly of Port Alberni, will tell you, he’s a little impulsive. This spring, he bought a mandolin on a whim, took up hunting for a day, and toured Vancouver Island on a motorcycle. So when he saw

that Evergreen was looking for someone to spend a month in a car during their MOVE Transportation Expo, he couldn’t resist. “It seemed so ridiculous that I thought I had to apply to it,” said the 22-yearold film student and professional sound recorder. “So I did.” To his surprise, the folks at Evergreen picked him to spend 24 hours a day in a Honda Insight for the next month. From the seat of his hybrid, he will Tweet, talk and hold interviews about environmentalism and sustainability. The feat is meant to highlight the cringeworthy statistic that Torontonians spend, on average, a month

each year commuting in their car. Although Zurkoski agrees with the idea, he is a little concerned about his comfort over the next month. At 6’3”, most hybrids “fit me like a metal sweater,” he says. However, this won’t be the first time he’s lived in a vehicle. Just as he was about to enter the fifth grade, Zurkoski’s mother asked him if he wanted to go to school or travel the U.S. and Canada for a year. He, of course, chose the latter. So they left their Vancouver Island home behind and spent the next 12 months drifting from state to province in an old ski bus.

A fake grenade caused an explosive situation at the Port Alberni RCMP detachment on Tuesday afternoon. The incident happened at 1:30 p.m. when a lady drove to the police station on Eighth Avenue and Morton Street with what she thought was a live grenade in her car, RCMP Watch Commander Cpl. Brady Mathison said. Police checked the car then called the RCMP bomb squad from Vancouver to handle the matter. The detachment was cordoned off for

several hours. The squad removed the suspicious item from the car and quickly determined that it wasn’t a grenade. “They confirmed it was a fake grenade. The afternoon shift said it looked real though,” Mathison said. According to Mathison the woman has a relative who was something of a hoarder and the fake grenade was among his possessions. “Some people felt that it should be brought in,” Mathison said. No charges are pending, he added.

Speeders back on Valley rails

For the fourth year in a row, members of Motorcar Operators West brought their speeders to Port Alberni for private runs on the Alberni Pacific Railway. A group of 22 speeders left Port Alberni for day excursions to Parksville on Monday and Tuesday. They were headed to Nanaimo on Wednesday. “They’re here for the fourth year in a row; that’s unprecedented,” said railway spokesperson Kevin Hunter. City entertaining ideas for old plywood lands WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

A sudden interest in the former Alberni Plywood site has prompted city officials to consider selling at least a portion of it. Located on the waterfront near Alberni Pacific Division mill, the lot is divided into three portions. The city currently leases Lots A and B to Chalwood Forest Products for log storage, and Lot C to Canal Beach (formerly Wild West Watersports), a windsurfing and kite boarding company. City councillors voted to issue a request for proposals for the sale or lease of Lot A, and to solicit letters of interest for Lots B and C. “We’ve been sitting on this for so long now. It’s time to dispose of,”

Coun. Hira Chopra said. “This piece of property is open for business.” Several inquiries from interested parties have prompted the city to entertain offers to buy the land on the former plywood site. According to economic development manager Pat Deakin, two businesses have recently expressed interest in buying property at the site. An alternate energy company inquired about Lot A for a biomass project it is developing. And a marine business wants to buy or retain property at the site for marine commercial/ industrial purposes. Coun. Jack McLeman later said he asked for the letters of interest to be included in the process. “I asked for letters of interest in

Lots B and C and let’s see what comes in,” he said. “If we like what we see then we can ask for a more detailed proposal.” A letter of interest is less formal than a request for proposal. Selling the lots isn’t straightforward; a series of complex considerations must be navigated through first, Deakin noted. Chief among the considerations is the fact that Lot A is heavily contaminated, and the Ministry of Environment wants it cleaned up. As well, terminating the log salvage lease on Lot A would impact local mills and result in job losses. Also, the nearshore

is owned by the province, who will only sell the property at its uncontaminated value. And lastly, the site — particularly Lot C — may become the subject of a claim by the Tseshaht First Nation, who have expressed interest in it over the years. The Tseshaht First Nation has reserve lands at Polly’s Point adjacent to the site. “We need to disclose these issues to potential proponents,” city manager Ken Watson said. Mayor John Douglas agreed, saying that it is important for people to be aware of what’s going on. The Port Alberni RCMP detachment has a new head man. RCMP Staff Sgt. Mac Richards has been chosen to be the officer in charge in Port Alberni. Richards, 45, joined the force in 1990 and currently works at the Marinville, Alta detachment. He is expected to start in Alberni this October. “Every detachment is different and there’s going to be a learning curve,” Richards said. “But police work is the same no matter where you go.” Originally from B.C. the married father of one said he spent a summer in Port Alberni while growing up. Richards replaces former Inspector Gord Wellar, who retired in November.

The McLean Mill dam needs repairing and a Port Alberni city councillor believes the Industrial Heritage Society has the expertise to do the job. Councillors voted to ask heritage society officials to attend the next council meeting to discuss the issue. The dam is built across Kitsuksis Creek at McLean Mill. It creates a pond for log storage below the mill; the pond is also used as a reservoir for firemen to drawn on in the event of a fire at the mill. The dam was

Two options were recommended to deal with the problem: modifying the existing dam or building a new bypass channel. Option two was recommended by the project consultant

and supported by stakeholders. The work could be done in stages, whereas it would all have to be done at once with the first option. At Monday’s meeting, Cicon provided an update about the project. Safety is the primary issue with moving forward on the project more substantively, he said. The dam no longer has the capacity to absorb severe flood waters. Serious overtopping has already occurred in 2006 and 2011, and the dam has been categorized as a “significant consequence” class by the dam safety auditor, Cicon said. The priority now is to stabilize the existing dam before winter and start construction in 2013, he added. Geotechnical and engineering experts have to be consulted as the project advances, Cicon said. The cost of the project was initially pegged at $285,000 but when pressed by Mayor John Douglas about what the final cost would be, Cicon estimated $600,000. The increase is primarily due to new regulations and an expanded scope of requirements. Stakeholders including the IHS,

Balancing stakeholder interests has been cumbersome, city manager Ken Watson said. “The inter-stability issues are more complex than the technical ones,” he said. Decommissioning the dam would be complicated because it’s needed for a fire reservoir and for mill operations, Watson said. Coun. Jack McLeman suggested contracting the IHS to do the work on the dam. The IHS “worked on buildings and built a road and a bridge and it didn’t cost us anything,” he said. “We have the expertise there; they know what they’re doing.” Watson suggested leaving the matter in Cicon’s hands. Coun. Rob Cole supported letting the IHS do the work. “Six hundred thousand (dollars) on a dam, the public will say ‘drain it,’” he said. “I don’t want to see that happen. Let’s see what the IHS can do.” Coun. Hira Chopra suggested inviting the IHS to listen to their concerns and councillors agreed. IHS president Gary Murton wasn’t surprised at the suggestion. “I’ve been hearing bits and pieces about it for the last couple of weeks,” Murton said. “We’re not contractors but we have a reputation of getting things done.” One issue facing the group is it’s made up of mostly retired tradesmen and others passionate about heritage restoration, and that could be an issue. “Our group is aging and we’re not getting any young people in,” Murton said. Society members will be huddling to mull the request over before meeting with the city. “I can’t say too much until we’ve met,” Murton added.

Province has 911 solution Science support crucial to society A charge to wireless customers to pay for 911 emergency service makes sense, but only if it’s enacted across B.C. Nanaimo’s attempt was well-intentioned and likely to push the matter toward the logical solution of a provincewide system. More than half of the 50,000 annual 911 calls to the Nanaimo emergency dispatch centre now come from mobile devices, but neither wireless users or carriers pay toward the central Island infrastructure. Meanwhile, land-line users do contribute to help pay for the service, but the number of people opting out of land lines is increasing, meaning less money is available to pay for operating the 911 system. It all adds up to a $1 million shortfall in the central Island, which dispatches 911 from the Malahat to north of Lantzville. It’s entirely reasonable to look for a way to bring mobile customers on board in paying for the vital 911 service. But as wireless providers point out, collecting on a municipal basis would be next to impossible. A B.C. Supreme Court judge agreed and tossed out Nanaimo’s bylaw, approved by council in 2010, and later approved by both the Nanaimo and Cowichan Valley regional districts. The only reasonable and equitable way to implement a 911 call levy is to do so across the board, throughout the entire province. Given that the wireless companies have indicated willingness to sign 911 levy agreements on a provincial basis, a fact the judge noted in his ruling, it’s a mystery why our legislators in Victoria are dragging their feet. Perhaps Nanaimo’s efforts will be sufficient to send the message to Victoria, provided our MLAs have the presence of mind to answer the call. — Nanaimo News Bulletin

he federal Conservative government is doing Canadian municipalities an injustice by cutting budgets for science, be it fisheries, meteorological or environmental assessments. Democracy, Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government fails to understand, depends on informed decisions. Then again, maybe that’s the plan. Less information, less knowledge, less informed electorate. I can envision Harper rubbing his hands together and laughing like Vincent Price while mumbling “eternal majority” over and over. Spooky. But maybe not as spooky as the real cuts that have been made. Here is an abbreviated list: Environment Canada, Fisheries and Oceans

Canada, Library Archives Canada, National Research Council, Statistics Canada, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. Most of those cuts won’t affect jobs here in Nanaimo, but, they will have a major impact on how Nanaimo grows in the future. First off, everything we do and know is the result of science, be it building codes, transportation, agriculture or health care. Secondly, I think we can all agree that climate change is real. According to Dennis Frenchman, an architect and professor of urban planning at MIT, today’s city planners must take into serious consideration how climate change will affect human migration in the coming decades. In an article in Popular Science, Frenchman states that by 2060 the

world’s population will reach nine billion, and because of climate-change induced environmental degradation, scientists predict tens of millions of people will move into today’s small and mediumsized cities. That, said Frenchman, will require some serious forethought by municipal planners, and they and senior levels of government will need all of the scientific evidence possible to assist with that planning. Transportation networks will need to be rethought, power generation will need to be localized, food production will need to be localized and land use will need to be reconsidered. Frenchman states that single-purpose spaces like shopping centres and housing developments will need to be exchanged for mixeduse neighbourhoods that

contain everyday services. Many other ideas for fast-growing small and mid-sized cities require, you guessed it, science and research. This is why hundreds of Canadian scientists stepped away from their Bunsen burners, petri dishes and microscopes on July 10 to denounce the Harper government’s sweeping cuts to science and research in their Death of Evidence mock funeral. Putting jobs ahead of the environment and taking away information needed to effectively plan and innovate, they cried, is wrong. As we enter into an exciting new era that could make or break society as we know it, our federal government has put the brakes on the very institutions we rely on to make informed and educated decisions to adapt to our changing environment, and evolve as a society. Life’s a challenge

To the Editor, I have read the editorial in your July 5 edition (The future they’ll inherit). I can do little but agree entirely with the author of this column. In doing so, I have been searching for a descriptive word and have concluded that “challenging” best describes its contents. Many in this beautiful town seem all too anxious to embrace the handling and shipping of coal to Asian nations through our community. They in turn will burn this

fuel, contributing to the pollution of our planet’s atmosphere. I feel certain that the economic spin off that our community will realize will not stand up to the scrutiny of our descendants. This may be considered as but one example of “spending our grandchildren’s inheritance.” Perhaps in planning our beautiful city we should place the highest emphasis on what actions our descendants would endorse. To the Editor, I like to be with people who bring out the best in me, what is noble, and kind, positive and strong. So I don’t like attack ads that cater to and encourage my nasty side, and try to scare me with half truths and innuendo. The latest ads by the Harper government attacking Thomas Mulcair do nothing for political discourse in Canada and are an insult to voters. We don’t need to import the mess that we see in the USA where positive action is stopped by childish tantrums, and dirty tricks are an accepted campaign tool. Deterioration dismays reader To the Editor, If you’re one of the hundreds of local taxpayers who walk the Kitsuksis Dike on a regular basis, you’ve probably noticed the sad condition of the gardens along the way. These once well maintained islands of shrubs and trees

are now over-run with weeds, broken branches and garbage. I’m sure you’ve seen, too, the dangerous state of disrepair of the bridge at the south end of the path. With it’s rotten, broken boards and protruding rusty nails, it’s surely an accident (and ensuing lawsuit) waiting to happen. Being a member of the aforementioned group (local taxpayers), when you paid your property taxes, you most likely observed the immaculate gardens gracing the front of city hall. Not a weed in sight; lush, green lawns mowed with golf course precision; not a leaf out of place. And we can’t forget the “sculpture.” Instead of using our money to buy that pile of rusting scrap metal, I think the residents of city hall could have served their community better if they had spent it on repairing the bridge, thus ensuring the safety of those of us who appreciate what the dike has to offer. In closing, I would just like to say that I think the dike could be, and should be, one of the seven wonders of Port Alberni. I invite the mayor and

council to “take a hike” on the dike and see for themselves— just watch your step on that bridge. Ron Receveur, Port Alberni

What was point of your ‘rant’? To the Editor, By running the rant from the Comox Valley Record (The future they’ll inherit, Editorial, July 5) were you expressing support for their antiindustrial theme? The condemnative wording, “burning their oil, polluting their water...wrecking their planet” shows a mind thoroughly green-washed. Reading the book, The Rational Optimist by Matt Ridley would give an antidote and an honest perspective as to how conditions in the world have improved rather than deteriorated, mainly due to industrialisation. And there’s little excuse for editorial writers to be so deluded. Eliminating an industrial society would remove the very computers, the cameras, the printing presses and the paper to carry their mistaken ideas. Alas, people who lack a commitment

to reason will deliver contradictions. I do agree that we are leaving an impoverished legacy to the young, but it has only to do with education and finance. The radical environmentalism in our education system largely teaches that recycling is holy and mankind is the most destructive species on this earth. As such, should we be surprised to see psychological problems in our youth? Between those who are silent and those who strive to live off the productivity of others, doing all they can to avoid becoming productive themselves, there are few people left. Top that off with the widespread belief that only by adding greater numbers of young workers to pay for the services the retires demand, then yes, we are destroying the legacy. Rather than ‘wrecking their planet’ we are wrecking man’s economic world. We could leave a better future but it has nothing to do with burning oil. Gary Seinen, Port Alberni

BC gets lotto shaft again

To the Editor, There is no interruption in the ongoing flow of big lotto prizes to Ontario residents. The latest example of this scam came Saturday, June 30, when two Ontario 649 ticket holders won more than $16 million each. On June 2, top prize in 649 draw was $25, 492,000, which was won by one Ontario ticket holder. Those two June draws alone steered more than $59 million dollars to Ontario players, with B.C. players winning a few hundred thousand dollars. I have questioned the lottery corporation about a number of lopsided payouts. On one occasion they attributed B.C.’s “No Win” situation to population figures. The last response I received from a lottery spokesman was “People in Ontario buy more lottery tickets”. The only way we can acquire a “level playing field” is to have an independent firm conduct an open audit of the lottery corporation. Harold Hamilton, Port Alberni

I heard about a young man with long hair and tattered clothes who entered a church and walked up near the front pew and sat down cross-legged. As the sound of whispering spread through the congregation, an old elder walked up from the back. All eyes were on him as the curious onlookers wondered what he would do. The elder sat down next to him, crossed his legs and enjoyed the morning service. Trainees eye jobs in aquaculture Sixty people on northern Vancouver Island are beginning a 25-week training program to learn the skills necessary to work as aquaculture technicians in the aquaculture industry. The provincial government is supporting a new Labour Market Sector Solutions project with the BC Salmon Farmers Association, which is designed to help participants secure permanent employment in the aquaculture industry while helping local employers meet labour demands. “Our government’s top priority is creating and protecting jobs for British Columbians,” said Pat Bell, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation. “This aquaculture training program will not only help employers on Vancouver Island address their demand for skilled workers, but it will also provide British Columbians in more remote communities on

Vancouver Island the opportunity to train in this industry and find a job.” The aquaculture technician diploma program is being offered by Excel Career College in three areas of Vancouver Island:

Abbeyfield celebrates 10 years ORLANDO DELANO Special to the News

Abbeyfield Port Alberni will celebrate on Aug. 26 the completion of its 10th year of operation. It was in 2002 when the late Terry Whyte, founder of this home in our community, welcomed the first 18 residents. Inspired by an October 1986 article in the Victoria Times-Colonist about a proposed Abbeyfield House in Sidney, Whyte realized this might be the solution to the gap in seniors housing in the Alberni Valley. Under Whyte’s leadership, a group of local residents worked on the project and formed a legal society in 1995. That same year the Valley was confident a new hospital was on the way. Abbeyfield made its first overtures to obtain the extended care unit from the

I had worked at Victoria’s Abbeyfield St. Peter’s for four years,” recalls Doyle. “There, I worked as a cook and a House Mother, and, basically, I did a bit of everything. On my last year, I was part of the house committee, which dealt with the residents’ well being as well as being responsible for who was going to become a new resident of the home.” Doyle praised the work Whyte had done before his death last year,

adding that he did so much for this home, for the Abbeyfield movement and for the community, that it is very hard to summarize all his accomplishments. “He was one of those people who cannot be replaced. I was very fortunate to have worked with him because I learned so much from him. “Today, I continue my association with Abbeyfield and my regular contact with the residents we serve.” Doyle was raised in Saskatchewan and moved to the West Coast when she was 16 and got a job for BC Tel, which lasted for two years. She also attended night school. She married at 17. Today, Abbeyfield

Port Alberni accommodates 21 residents and is the largest Abbeyfield home in Canada. Marlene Dietrich is the president of the board of directors. She is a dedicated volunteer who understands the needs of seniors and provides them with a healthy and pleasant home. “We are very fortunate to have her as our leader, and to continue Terry’s work,” says Doyle. “(She is) carrying on with the philosophy of the Abbeyfield movement, which gives the residents a say in what affects their environment and the respect they need for their independence and freedom of choice.”

Jordan and Jesse Wagner of Port Alberni (Vancouver Island-Central Coast – Zone 6) are similar in more ways that one. The identical twins also share a passion to be the best in their respective wrestling weight classes. The Wagner brothers, 16, have trained as wrestlers for the better part of six years, with the distinction of numerous accolades to their names. Last weekend they competed at the BC Summer Games in Surrey. From the moment you meet them, you instantly feel the positive and lively

vibe of brotherhood, with no signs of jealousy or envy from one another. The brothers are humble in their approach and cool on the surface, but the fire that fuels them comes out when one asks if there is any competition between the two. “We are really competitive with each other in whatever we do,” said Jesse. This is evident in the fact that they have competed against each other for some time. Jordan has gotten the better of Jesse on two occasions which included a fifth-place appearance at the nationals and a third at the westerns, while only conceding to Jesse on one occasion,

when they finished first and second respectively. Although there is a fierce rivalry when they do compete, they also work well together. “We regularly train each other, even before our big matches against one another,” said Jordan. Luckily for the brothers, they did not face each other during the BC Summer Games. But they still came out victorious. Jesse won a gold medal in the 54 kg class, while Jordan won a silver medal in the 57 kg class.

least number of putts. Kathy Toms had the first low net. Division B: Found Lorraine Wilson in first low gross position. Marie Swain in first low net while Louise Berlinski and Marj Dufour shared the putting jar. Could have been the Birdie on No. 4 that did it for Wilson or the two holes parred, No. 5 and No. 6...either way she had a great game. cold rainy day last week...that’s the day that the Alberni ladies hosted team play to Fairwinds golfers. Our gals had a sizzling game and took the out-oftowners 43 points to 29. Hot stuff on a dull day. Claudia Romaniuk sizzled today, coming in with an 86 low gross with Anna Marie Krikke hot on her heels with a 65 low net. There was nothing tepid about Gayle Rhodes’ game either.. She was the challenge pin holder and defended her title against challenger, Olga Kanigan. Todays ball sweep entailed adding up your score from tee to green, then taking

away the number of putts. Marie Randall’s torrid game brought her to the first place position with a low gross score of 39. Kathy MacDonald had a peppery game which gave her the first place position for low net minus the putts. The Solheim Cup has a full slate of players for their next competition but they have started a waiting list for this very popular competition. Fifty golfers played in the Dairy Queen two man Iron Man on Sunday July 22. Craig Acland and Keith Gauthier posted first low gross. Sam Parhar and Brett Parhar were second followed by Preban Rasmussen and Dennis Debolt. First low net were Kevin Carlton and Mark Anderson followed by Jim Lawler and Frank Hastings, Jacques Giovetti and John Jones, George DeFrane and Paul Saulnier, Jim Rhodes and Ron Barker. On No. 2 Craig Acland was closest to the pin. Art Fowler

collected $33 for his closest to the pin shot on No. 4. Sam Parhar scored closest to the pin on No. 13 and Ken Fong was closest on No. 17. On No. 6 Keith Gauthier put his second shot closest to the pin. The Westwind Pub put up a gift certificate for the long drive on No. 5 and Ken Fong walked off with that prize.

No winner on the hidden hole this week so $296 will be up for grabs next Sunday. On Thursday Gene Kimoto aced No. 13. Way to go Gene. Next Sunday is the Van Isle Ford Scramble. The computer will pick four- man teams for a shotgun start at 8 a.m. sharp. Please enter with your handicap.
