A facelift for the Chamber Renovations are now underway to enhance the Cranbrook Community Business and Visitor Hub. The Cranbrook & District Chamber of Commerce project includes: • renovating the Chamber of¿ce; • renovating the visitor information space and adding an Internet kiosk; • adding three of¿ces that can be rented to

small business operators, and expanding an existing rental of¿ce; • developing a stateof-the-art meeting and training facility for use by the entire community; and • developing community business incubation and sector support services. “This project will make better use of the existing space and make it more usable for local

businesses, community members and visitors,” said Karin Penner, Manager, Cranbrook & District Chamber of Commerce. The work is being done with $42,500 in support from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). “The renovation will increase the Chamber’s ability to deliver a range of services to a range of users,” said Jennifer Krotz, CBT Community Liaison.

School Districts 5 and 6 are urgently looking for homestay families throughout the East Kootenay to host late applicants for the school year starting in September. Most available students are from Germany, Mexico and Brazil, will be studying in Grades 7 to 12, and will be staying either for one semester or one school year. We encourage emptynester parents or any family to consider hosting two students from different countries. Such double placements are consistently very successful. Host families receive a tax-free allowance each month per student, and weekend and/or vacation coverage is available.

School Works Program to continue throughout Basin The School Works Program pilot, which began its successful run in February, is being offered again this fall to Basin-based businesses and organizations. School Works provides an $8/hour wage subsidy to encourage small businesses and non-pro¿t, First Nation and public sector organizations in the Basin to provide part-time employment for fulltime high school and post-secondary students in the Basin during the

school year. “CBT is pleased to be able to continue the School Works Program this fall,” said Sabrina Curtis, CBT Director, Planning and Development. “We are providing $600,000 toward wage subsidies for Basin organizations to increase the availability of jobs for students.” College of the Rockies delivered the pilot and will continue to work in partnership with CBT to administer the program this fall.

“We are excited to continue collaborating with CBT after a very successful ¿rst run. The School Works Program has had such a positive impact on businesses throughout the Columbia Basin; we are thrilled to be a part of it,” Tracey Whiting, Manager of Contract Training and Business Development at College of the Rockies. From January to June, 64 businesses throughout the Basin hired students part-time with the

support of the School Works Program. “I loved my part-time job. Through this job I con¿rmed how much I love water sports. My favourite part about the job was the Wednesday paddle night. It’s cool to see customers enjoying their boat. I learned lots of new job skills, including quick books accounting software and how to talk to customers. I used to be really shy and now it’s not a big deal for me to talk to people in the store

Ktunaxa to apply for Jumbo resort review Today the Ktunaxa Nation announce their formal decision to apply for Judicial Review of the BC Government’s recent approval of the Jumbo Glacier Resort. The resort would be built in the heart of what the Ktunaxa call Qat’muk (GOT MOOK), which is located an hour west of

Invermere. The home of Grizzly Bear Spirit, Qat’muk is vital to both Ktunaxa culture and the region’s environment. The BC Government’s approval of the resort in the heart of Qat’muk represents a desecration of a principal Ktunaxa sacred site, the potential undoing

of Ktunaxa traditional spiritual and religious practices, and consequently a signi¿cant and unjusti¿able violation of Ktunaxa constitutional rights. According to the Ktunaxa Creation Story, Qat’muk is where Grizzly Bear Spirit was born, goes to heal itself, and returns to the spirit world. For the Ktunaxa, relying on the continuation of traditional spiritual and religious practices, Grizzly Bear Spirit is a

unique and indispensable source of collective as well as individual guidance, strength, and protection. “Ktunaxa have been on record as being opposed to this resort since it was ¿rst proposed, principally on the spiritual importance of the Qat’muk area for Ktunaxa people, as well as the concerns for the protection of wildlife populations, biodiversity and water quality. Throughout the consultation process, the Ktunaxa Nation clearly and consistently indicated that proceeding with the resort would destroy

the spiritual, cultural and environmental values of Qat’muk. Yet, they did not hear our words,” said Ktunaxa Nation Chair, Kathryn Teneese. “We now have no other choice but to challenge the BC Government’s decision making process. We feel that this decision will not stand in a court of law, and will be found to show that the BC Government did not make the correct decision in approving the resort in the heart of Qat’muk.” To make a donation for legal costs, visit www. beforejumbo.com.

A Willow for Every Yard Picture a pond, glistening in the evening sun, at its edge the weeping branches of a willow, floating lightly on the water. This serene and romantic picture is often used in wedding photographs, but have you ever wondered if you could create a similar look in your yard? Willows are a tree for dramatic effect, especially the most recognizable varieties of weeping willows, such as the Golden Willow or the Prairie Cascade Willow. The use of weeping willows in yards and gardens is said to have originated in Britain where the trees have a long history. One story shows how easily these trees can be grown, even from clippings. It is reported that the first willow was planted in 1748 at Twickenham Park by a Mr. Vernon, who found some green twigs in a delivery of figs from the Middle East and decided to see if they would grow if put into the ground. The weeping branches of the Golden Willow make a great privacy screen or windbreak and create landscape interest year-round. The slender leaves start out glossy green and turn a vibrant yellow in the fall. The Prairie Cascade Willow has the same weeping habit as the Golden Willow, but this cross that was developed at a research facility in Manitoba, has the flossy green leaves of a Laurel Leaf Willow. The Laurel Leaf Willow is an upright variety as is the Marquette Pussy Willow. This variety has shiny foliage, but it is its distinct, soft pussy willows that make it a popular messenger of spring. All these full grown willows are not suitable for a small yard. Their root systems need a lot of space and willows prefer moist locations. As a consequence, willows can cause some damage to older water or drainage systems if planted too closely. There are many options for home owners who enjoy the look of the slender and elegant willow leaves and their attractive branches, but do not have enough room to plant a full-sized tree. Just like the trees, willow shrubs come in upright or weeping varieties. The Dwarf Arctic Willow and Hakuro Nishiki Willow are both great choices for planting a formal or informal hedge, as part of a mixed border or as an accent in the landscape. The Dwarf Arctic Willow has fine textured, narrow grey green leaves in summer that turn a showy yellow in the fall. Its purple coloured stems create added interest in the winter. The Hakuro Nishiki Willow is noted for its outstanding variegated foliage, with dappled greens, pinks and whites. It has very fine textured pink stems and buds which add to the attractiveness of the shrub. This willow is available as a shrub or in a top grafted tree form that makes it perfect for a patio plant or a small accent tree in the yard. Another top grafted variety is the Weeping Arctic Willow. As the name indicates, this is a weeping willow in a smaller package. Dark green fine textured leaves that show a little blue underneath provide the main attraction for this plant. Big or small, there is a willow for every location. If you love the look of this unique tree, come find out which variety will suit your yard. Till next time… happy gardening, Submitted by Tara

travention of an open ¿re prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if convicted in court, be ¿ned up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. This prohibition does not include camp¿res, gas or propane cooking stoves or briquettes. It also does not apply to a resource management open ¿re. Camp¿res must not be larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres in size. Anyone lighting a camp¿re must maintain a ¿reguard by removing Àammable debris around the camp¿re area and must have a hand tool or at least eight litres of water available nearby to properly extinguish the ¿re. This prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of local governments that have forest ¿re prevention bylaws and are serviced by a ¿re department. Please check with civic authorities for any prohibitions before lighting a ¿re. Report a wild¿re or unattended camp¿re by calling *5555 on your cellphone or 1 800 6635555 toll-free. For the latest information on current wild¿re activity, please visit: www.bcwild¿re.ca Camp¿re safety tips: • Never build a camp¿re on a windy day. • Build camp¿res in ¿re pits provided or on bare rock or sand, if no ¿re pit is provided. • Use crumpled paper and/or kindling to start a ¿re rather than using Àammable liquids. • Secure all lighters and matches and keep them out of children’s reach. • Teach children how to STOP, DROP and ROLL should their clothing catch on ¿re. • Keep plenty of water and a shovel around to douse the ¿re when you’re done.
