West Fraser encouraged by quarterly results AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter West Fraser is looking at continued operational improvements. West Fraser Timber Co. Ltd. reported earnings for the second quarter of 2012 of $27 million and earnings per share of $0.63 on sales of $774 million. For the first half of 2012, earnings were $10 million and earnings per share were $0.24, on sales of $1.5 billion. In the quarter the lumber segment generated
operating earnings of $34 million and operating earnings plus amortization (EBITDA) of $53 million. Lumber prices rallied strongly as improved U.S. demand combined with continuing Asian demand for Canadian lumber. Higher lumber prices also triggered a reduction in duties (from 15 per cent to 10 per cent) charged on softwood lumber exported to the U.S. from B.C. and Alberta for the month of June 2012. The panels segment,

WANTED State of emergency lifted 2 HOMES IN YOUR AREA
NEWS
The City of Quesnel has cancelled the local state of emergency that has been in effect since last Friday evening. The declaration had been in place due to the potential risk of flash flooding after a landslide took place in Baker Creek near Pinnacles Provincial Park, about three kilometres upstream from where the creek flows into the Fraser River. A team of specialists coordinated by Emergency Management BC and the City of Quesnel visited the site on Monday afternoon, and after
consulting again this morning, determined there is no immediate risk to the public. The material that slid into the creek is solid material, including several large boulders, that is not expected to dissolve suddenly. The opposite creek bank appears to consist mainly of material that erodes easily. This is allowing the creek to carve a new path around the blockage. Various agencies, including the City of Quesnel, will continue to monitor the site, especially during next spring’s run-off period.
A more in-depth geotechnical assessment may also be conducted to determine a number of things, including what caused the slide and the potential for new slides in the area. Despite the risk of a flash flood having passed, the city reminds residents that the creeks and rivers in our area remain potentially dangerous places and that people should always exercise caution when enjoying them. The city thanks residents for their cooperation, patience and understanding during this event.

The Country Drive We took a drive down a long country road, Looking for wildlife in nature’s abode. The deer were attractive, they ate without fear, As we drove alongside them, ever so near. On the swamp by the road swam a Canada Goose, While there on the edge stood a tall lonely moose. The field in behind had rabbits galore, And a coyote strolled by, looking for more. A bald headed eagle sat, perched on a tree, While a bear down below, ate berries for free. We drove down the road overlooking a hill,
And there stood an elk, he was ever so still. While on our way home, looking up to the sky, We saw a large owl, his head was held high. He soared and he soared while looking for prey, As he flew o’er the fields of the freshly cut hay. Our drive through the forest was really worthwhile, We enjoyed every minute, mile after mile. It’s still in our mind and it’s all very clear, We’re taking that drive again in a year. Elaine Couldwell
Whittier Creek What better place to write a poem Or but a poet be? What better place to have a home than by the lovely lea?
It gives a cool, refreshing bath In summers hot and dry, Within a pool along the path; Secluded if you're shy.
I love to walk along it's sand And know the peace it brings When twilight covers all the land And night has velvet wings.
The creek has other things to give, Such as fish, if you know About the foam and where they live And how far down to go.
And in the Spring, when it has grown From melting snows that last On meadows far unknown, It is a torrent going past.
But best of all, it gives the place To be alone, at last, Where the earth shows it's smiling face And life is not so fast.
The thunder from the water booms And fills the night with sound. It reaches into all the rooms As in the air around.

The Calgary Stampede “Welcome to the 100th anniversary of the Calgary stampede!” Beautiful horses enter the stampede, they see their riders must lead. Cowboys and Cowgirls throughout the map rush in for the National Anthem by fire. 300,000 people come to see the entertainment they must admire. Amateur Bareback is the first to start a scene. To ride you must at lease be in your teens. The handsome rider and the horse leap out of the corral before you can say horse. The grand horse bucks with such great force. The horn blares and the cowboy has survived the exciting round. Next is Amateur Saddle bronco, the riders courage must be found. They ride a bucking horse, NOT BAREBACK! But with a saddle. When it begins, the riders sure rattle. The horn blares! Oh! He’s bucked off his horse. Other cowboys must try to survive this daring course. Another bucking competition begins, steer riding to be exact. Some cowboys riding get a nice hard WHACK! Now tie down roping must begin its awesome show. When the calf gets tied up, the cowboy sure crows. Next is steer wrestling, then pro bareback professional saddle bronc, ladies barrel racing, bull riding and finally wild pony races. These spirited cowboys/girls sure put an effort and keep the pace. But they enjoy competing in the Calgary stampede! The End Ryder Anderson Age 11
Awesome Wonder I stand in awesome wonder out in the misty moon light night. I feel the gentle softness and the beauty of the sight. I thought about my Father’s home; I left not long ago. As I looked into the heavens, I know he loves me so. I see again His glorious mansions that seem made of pure gold. The splendor of the flowers and their beauty to behold. I smell their scented perfume, it seems riding on the breeze. I hear the robins singing, and the rustle of the leaves. Along the silver pathway, I feel my footsteps lead. To a splendid golden alter, for talents I would need. I hear Him whisper softly, a message just for me. Please treat others kindly, as you would have them do to you. Reach your hand to all, and the needy please pursue. Learn to understand, all are not the same. Be willing to forgive, those who play the different game. Like My Son; your brother, please turn the other cheek. Keep the spirit with you, and of the gospel seek. My daughter dear we, now send you down to earth, To take a body up, in a mortal birth. We bless you now with courage, and with a spirit bright. Keep away from satans darkness, and seek heavenly light. Follow well the Savior, and shout with joyous lays. I know my father lives, let it be your song of praise. So now to you, we say adieu. Go now and choose the right. Remember my yoke is easy, and my burden is so light. I’ll do what thou hast asked me; and I will promise to obey. I’ll build a wall around my faith; and not be led astray. As I turned to enter in my door, I know I lived with Him before. Loving parents let me go. And watched my struggles down below. The Savior taught us how to pray, We ask our Father day by day; To teach, help and strengthen us as we go upon our way. June Harnden Anderson
The Pipeline-a Parody It is a path to perplexity. It is thousands of risks to streams and soil It is a threat to ecosystems, and to rare and common species. It is world-record safety violations. It is a path to low environmental conscience. A pipeline, with the oil tankers, will increase danger to the ocean and ocean life. It will trigger global dilemmas. It will spawn local opposition. It is more than a pipeline. It is a pathway to future disaster. Betty Helsdon Edwards

The Ten Percent Solution I had the pleasure of attending a Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) sponsored event in Quesnel last week at which CUPE BC President Barry O’Neill outlined the union’s campaign to create a “ten percent shift” in people’s spending habits in favour of local producers and businesses. This is a timely and worthwhile campaign that merits closer attention from local government and business organizations in our region. The Ten Percent Shift campaign is intended to show people they can actively help to create sustainable economic growth in their communities by deliberately shifting ten percent of their existing household spending to local goods and services and locally owned businesses. Ideas and examples of how to make this shift are provided on the campaign’s website,www.tenpercentshift.ca, along with an opportunity to take the “Ten Percent Pledge.” During the session in Quesnel, Mr. O’Neill gave numerous examples of communities that have actively promoted this shift in spending and the positive, and cumulative, impacts that accrued to workers and businesses alike. Given the sorry and uncertain state of the global economy, anything we can do to foster a stronger local economy will help us all in the long run.
The seven candidates in the Miss Quesnel Self Development Program did their best last Friday night to impress the judges, but in the end, Parveen Pannu was crowned Miss Quesnel 2012 and Katey Genereux and Cassidy Knorr were crowned as Quesnel Princesses. The newly crowned royalty waved to the crowds Saturday morning at the Billy Barker Days parade.
While the overall intent of CUPE’s campaign is similar to other “shop local” initiatives, the key difference is the specific target it establishes for spending locally and the fact that a large public sector union is actively educating its members about the community benefits of keeping their money circulating in their local economy.
Danika M. Hébert photos
The shift Mr. O’Neill is promoting should become part of our overall strategy to mitigate the economic impacts of the mountain pine beetle epidemic, and I applaud his and CUPE BC’s efforts to get us all to support our local economies.

Mayor Sjostrom and a majority of Quesnel’s City Councilors attended CUPE BC’s information session. I spoke with some of them afterwards and they, like me, were impressed with the focus, content, and intent of the presentation. I hope to meet with Council in early fall to discuss the Timber Supply Committee report that will be published on August 15, and I will incorporate a discussion of how we can capitalize on the Ten Percent Shift campaign as well. As a starting point, I believe we should invite Mr. O’Neill back to Quesnel to speak to a bigger audience.

OPINIONS Just ask
P
erhaps Premier Christy Clark sees a battle with Alberta — over revenue from allowing the Enbridge pipeline to use B.C. to link Alberta oil with tankers on the Pacific Ocean — as the last hope to rally voters in time for the spring 2013 election campaign. It stands to reason, since the B.C. NDP has staked the opposed-topipeline position and the B.C. Conservatives have claimed the support-with-conditions spot. However, by demanding that B.C. receive oil royalties from profits made from what flows through the pipeline, Clark is simply catering to those who already support the Enbridge proposal. Those opposed — and they include First Nations along the proposed route from Alberta to Kitimat — have said loud and clear it is not about money, but about inevitable environmental damage. Grand Chief Edward John of the First Nations Summit political executive summed it up in a scathing press release on July 24, when he said the Clark B.C. Liberal government has missed the mark, stressing “B.C. First Nations’ traditional territories and pristine environment are not for sale.” John reminded Clark of the Supreme Court of Canada’s stance that there is a legal requirement for governments to “consult and accommodate” First Nations regarding any and all land and resource development initiatives in their respective territories. If First Nations cannot be convinced to allow a pipeline to be constructed through their territories — with or without scads of cash — the pipeline simply will not come to be. With Clark’s demand having been rejected by Alberta Premier Alison Redford, with First Nations still on the sidelines and with strong opposition among the public, perhaps it would be wise for Clark to add a non-binding referendum question to the May 14, 2013 general election ballot. A simple question — Are you in favour of the Enbridge pipeline proposal? — could produce results that tell the government of the day exactly which direction it should travel on this pipeline proposal. –Black Press
Everyone has a story to tell T
he recent report of a 45-year-old man in Oklahoma City who claimed he made $60,000 a year panhandling sparked a ton of conversation throughout North America, and some of it was angry. “Here I am working my tail off for $45,000 a year and this guy is making more than me doing nothing?!” exclaimed one of my friends. That was the kind of reaction many people had after reading that Shane Warren Speegle told a police officer that he was too lazy to get a real job and would rather risk paying $200/day for a permit to panhandle. But given a choice between an honest day of work and a day out on the streets, most people would never choose the latter. Why? One of the reasons is that begging is humiliating. Another could be that it’s harder than it looks.

On A Brighter Note “I was stuck in a strange city once after my wallet was stolen when I was traveling in my twenties,” another friend told me. “I had to ask strangers for money so I could get something to eat and call home. Most people ignored me like I didn’t exist and a few hurled profanities at me and told me to get a job.” Embarrassed and in tears, she continued to ask for handouts until a nice older couple stopped to help. “I can’t imagine ever choosing to beg for money,” she said. “Working is way easier
don’t know their history any more than they know ours. I’m not saying whether or not we should be giving them money, I’m just suggesting that we don’t paint everyone with the same brush. We also can’t lose sight of how fortunate we are to be living in North America. Even the homeless of our society have access to running water, food and shelter, unlike millions of our fellow humans who are born into poverty stricken third-world nations where a glass of clean water isn’t even available. Everything is relative and compassion is key. It will guide us as individuals to decide who and how we choose to help others. Yet if he is telling the truth, I don’t think he’s a fair representative of panhandlers in general. From what I know, most people on the streets are there because they have a mental illness, a crippling addiction or they’ve fallen on desperate times and are unable to get a legitimate job. I’d also guess that most of them aren’t making anywhere close to $60,000 a year. As human beings we tend to judge based on the appearances of what we see. When we witness what looks to be an able-bodied person asking for money on the streets we may judge them harshly and consider them to be lazy scammers when quite the opposite might be true. We really

FEEDBACK
Theatre Royale cast members rehearse. Contributed photo
Half truths and rude Editor: Re: Not the Barkerville I remembered, Feedback, July 18. The letter from AB and Mary McQuillin printed in the recent Observer is inaccurate, discouraging and unfair, with respect to our theatre and, I believe, our town. At 10:45 on Monday morning there was a pounding on our front door. When I answered there were four people there, asking about the 11 a.m. show. I explained that there was no show on Monday, as the actor needed a day off, one day off per week. A regular day off, as they saw

We have few as two cancelled perhaps three shows in nine people.” years and always because of serious incidents. Our actors motto is: “You don’t call in sick - you call in dead.” And, we do shows for as few as two people.
Their final comment advising visitors to check “if the cast is in the mood to put on the show” is rude, and wrong. The letter was run without fact checking by the Observer staff so the can also should hang off your paper’s tail as well. A simple phone call would have rectified the issue. Ray Langley, left and Duane Paley, right, share a special story of good luck and good timing. Annie Gallant photo
ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Ray Langley admitted he sometimes tells stories, mostly true but with a little embellishment. But the fishing rod story was even beyond his belief. His pal Duane Paley began the story in late March 2011. As was often his habit he headed to Milburn Lake with his little dog for a bit of ice fishing, hoping to catch a couple of trout for dinner. “After I cut a hole in the ice my little dog disappeared,” he said. “I put my rod on my bucket and went in search of the dog around the corner. When I found him I threw him in the pickup and returned to my fishing hole. “My rod was missing. I presumed it went down the hole.” Paley said he usually doesn’t carry a second rod, so he returned to his home nearby, fired the dog in the door and grabbed another rod. “I went back to my fishing hole, caught a couple of fish and was done.” Chalking it up to a casualty of fishing, although he’s never lost a rod before, Paley never expected to see the rod again. His 30-inch, yellow-tipped fishing rod, with his favourite weight and chartreuse jig, was swallowed up by the lake. Fast forward to March 2012 and avid fisherman Ray Langley decided to try ice fishing in Milburn Lake. “I like to go where others fish, often there’s holes already cut in the ice,” he said with a laugh. “I’m always looking for easy fishing.” He wasn’t disappointed as there were several existing holes. “I thought maybe Duane or some other fishermen would be on the lake but I was alone,” Langley said. After trying a few of the different spots, Langley settled on his fishing box at one of the ice holes and began jigging, hoping to catch a few trout for his dinner. “All of a sudden something heavy was on the line,” he said.
Once he returned, they talked about the chance of losing a rod and Duane related his experience from “I put my rod on my bucket and went in search the previous year. of the dog around the corner. Finding a new home: the challenges of rehoming a pet When the decision is made to bring an animal into our lives, most of us accept the responsibility to care for it for its entire life. Sadly, there are times when we realize that we may need to rehome our pets: unmanageable allergies, conflict between pets, changes in family finances, long-term illness or moving to a place, such as an assisted care facility, which may not allow pets. When looking for a new home for your cherished animal companion here are a few things to consider. Start with who you know. Do you have a friend, family member, neighbour or someone else who is close to you who wants to welcome a new animal into their life? Going to live with a familiar face will make the transition much easier for your pet. Whenever possible, try to find someone who has previous experience with caring for pets and who has a suitable lifestyle. For instance, does your cat dislike children? Perhaps rehoming her with your daughter who just had twins wouldn’t be the best option – for the cat or the children! Plan for the health of your pet. Before you rehome your animal ensure that they are spayed or neutered. If your pet has on-going and expensive health issues you may want to set up a trust with your veterinarian so that your pet’s new owner can have some assistance with the costs. If this isn’t an option, be sure that you are completely honest about all

health concerns with any new prospective owners. Visiting the new home. Before you make a final decision, be sure to visit the potential owner’s new home with your pet and see how the new owner and your animal interact. This visit will also allow you to ask questions about your pet’s new life. This is your opportunity to provide the new owner with background on your pet’s likes and dislikes, personality, habits or anything you’re concerned about. The shelter option. If you’re in a situation where you are unable to find a suitable home for your pet, your local humane society, SPCA or breed rescue group (for dogs) may be your best option. They have staff that are trained to screen and counsel prospective adopters. However, they cannot guarantee that your pet will be adopted as they may already have many animals to care for and adopt out. It is always best to try to find a suitable home yourself. Create a contract. To ease any concerns that you have about your pet’s future you may wish to create a contract that will outline specific requirements and conditions with your pet’s new owner. For instance, you may wish to document what will happen if they need to rehome your pet for some unforeseeable reason. Newspapers and online ads. It’s difficult to screen prospective owners when you use online or print ads –

especially if you are giving your animal away for free. For that reason we don’t recommend using either of these. It is always best to rehome your pet with someone you know, or who is known to a friend.
If you are concerned about animal welfare and would like to learn more, the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS) should be your first stop. The CFHS is the only national voice on animal welfare
representing humane societies and SPCAs across the country. It is committed to securing the humane treatment of all animals in Canada — on the farm, in the home, in the lab and in the wild. It’s an ambitious goal, given
the many abuses which animals are still sadly subjected to in this country. But it’s one that the CFHS is pursuing with passion, determination and the support of caring Canadians who believe that animals
deserve our respect and protection. To learn more about what you can do to secure humane treatment for all animals in Canada, visit www.cfhs.ca.

Top; runners made their way along the scenic river walk. Right; the welcoming party at the end of the race offered encouragement to many a weary runner as they crossed the line. Jonas Gagnon photos
Billy Barker Days Fun Run host to both youn and young at heart JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter With categories ranging from six years-old all the way up past 70, the fun run had fun for everyone. Starting at 9 a.m. in a mass start from LeBourdais Park, the group of runners set out to challenge themselves and each other. Tracing their way through the city, along the river walk and finishing at the Rec Centre, runners took from half an hour, to two hours to filter their way through the city. The variation in times is mostly as a result of the two courses from which the runners could choose. Participants made the choice between a 5.2 or 12.4 km run, except for the youngest category, which was limited to the 5.2 km run. After all the runners had collected at the Rec Centre, they gathered at the Shiraoi Garden for the awards ceremony, door
prizes and some snacks to recoup the energy they had just expended. Door prizes included gift certificates and two pairs of runners, a pair of New Balances and a pair of Asics from Reason 2 Run. Bruce Haley was the first of all the competitiors running the long course to arrive at the Rec Centre. He topped his category, male 40-49, with a time of 54:20. Second in the category, with a time of 56:02, was Francis Barbosa, followed by Scott Gibbs at 59:16 taking third. Not far behind, at 58:48, was Melinda Johnston at the top of her class, female 30-39. She was followed by Nicola MacKay at 1:21:41 and Trina Melanson with a time of 1:27:09. In the female 40-49, Catherine Giles was the fastest, at 58:56. Terri Paul was second, making the Rec Centre in 1:10:29, followed by Valri Finniss in third at 1:21:17. The 30-39 male category
Jason Neumeyer took first, finishing all 12.4 km in 55:14. Kevin Sturt came in second, finishing in 55:51, followed by Anthony Boyd at 56:59. Sonny Cervienka was the only runner to represent the young'uns in the 12.4 km run. He finished in 59:19 and won his category, male 13-18. The 50-59 year-olds were scant on the ground, but a couple of women showed up to represent for their age group. Bridget Nowalwuslin took first in her age category, with a time of 1:08:49. Rebecca Hydamacka took second with a time of 1:18:19. Perhaps the most impressive were those were closing in on retirement, or were long retired, but still came out and did the whole 12.4 kms of the long run. Petrie Neave, in the men's 60-69, did the run in 1:08:37, winning his category. Bill Staats followed in second with a time of 1:45:29.
A single runner came out to run in the 70+ category. Everet Bjorkkland was that man, finishing the race, and a couple extra kilometres due to a wrong turn, at 1:56:57. Kayla Plamandon and Craig Rodger were the only ones representing for the 20-29 yearolds. Plamandon, in the 5.2 km category, finished with a 32:08 and Rodger at 33:55. Diane Gibbs took the 5.2 30-39 category with a time of 28:59, followed by Amelie Deyaeger at 30:18 and Colleen Realf at 30:32. In the male 40-49 5.2 km, Matthew Havery came in first with a 26:29, followed by Martin Holst at 35:32 and Kelly McTaggart at 37:33. Jean Renyard was the only 50-59 year-old woman doing the 5.2 km run. She finished at 28:47. There were more men in the 50-59 category. Barry Mueller was the first past the line in that category, with a time of
24:42. Don Wood followed him at 26:33, with Peter Renyard wrapping up the top three at 29:36. Two adventurous septuagenarians took part in the 5.2 km version of the fun run. Doug Schweyer finished in 37:43 to take the male category and Lorraine Vandeweghe finished in 37:13 to take the female category. A couple 13-18 year-old girls took part in the run. Grace McTaggart took the fastest time in that category with a 24:56, followed by Casey Richert at 26:50. Katherine Osmond was the only female in the 6-12 year-old category, and thus took the tops spot in her category, finishing at 44:27. The male 6-12 category was fuller. Adam Osmond took the top spot in that category, finishing at Adam Osmond at 29:18. Jade Gibb took second at 32:12, followed by Nathan Isaac at 35:35.

Girls and boys and their big toys, playing in the dirt JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Under a hot sun that threatened to turn the mud to caked sand, the mud boggers got their clean trucks dirty on Saturday and continued playing in the mud through to Sunday. The bogs were a little dry on Saturday due to a new system the organizers were implementing, but, the organizers perfected the system for Sunday, resulting in much muddier, dirtier races. Despite the glitch on Saturday, the organizers were happy with the event. "It was one of the best races we’ve had in a long time and we're very proud of the guys who worked so hard to get the races up and running," Gavin McDonald, the president of the North West Mud Racing Association, said. The drags included everything from Suzuki Samurais you can see everyday on the street, to alcohol-burning, paddle-wheeled, supercharged, big-block running, fire breathing monsters that travelled the length of the drag in under three seconds, with wheels in the air as often as the mud. It was a test of endurance for those who showed up without earplugs, as the higher classes, running with open headers, sang an intense tune. The tube frame trucks, and car-ish vehicles, were a hit with the young ones in the crowd, who got to see them up close, as well as get free posters signed by the drivers, at the intermission. Drivers and trucks came from all over the province to compete. A couple local trucks and drivers did quite well in their classes. Locals Clint Crossman and Carmen Standbridge got third in the Fountain Tire Racing truck in the Street Class. Jody Mighton, another Quesnel local, took second in Class C in Mudder Hucker. The fastest pass, however, went to Steve Streel in Overdraft, a Class F truck. He made it down the strip in 2.272 seconds in a cloud of mud and noise.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 You may need to get a little aggressive to get what you need, Taurus. Don't worry about being rude; you just may need to push yourself into certain situations this week.
Clockwise from left; Defibrilator gets some air off a bump as the strip ends and the ground turns from mud to dust; Mudder Hucker, driven by Jody Mighton, was the most succesful local; the trucks didn’t just spew mud, but some pretty intense exhaust fumes from their open headers. The fastest way around an oval JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter With three different classes of cars taking their turns around the Gold Pan Speedway, including a 100 lap main event, the oval hosted a very full day of racing on Saturday. The three classes included the regular Mr. Mikes Mini
Stride & Glide
Stocks and the Quesnel Iron Street Stocks. But the main event, and the treat for race fans, was the brightly coloured ARCA cars. Closer to the cars circling tracks in NASCAR than any car you might see on the road, the ARCA cars were a rainbow of colour as they blurred around the track, letting out shrieks of banshees as the drivers
coaxed every bit of power from the engine in an effort to win. In the Mr. Mikes Mini Stocks, Davin Barks, from Prince Geoge, took first in the main. In the Quesnel Iron Street Stocks, local Mike Lefebvre took first in the main event. In the ARCA series 27 Mark Berriau won, 18 Ian Graham came second,
71 Dave Olson was third, followed by 92 Logan Jewel. Number 5 Bob Williams battled into fifth. Top finishing rookie 21 Cass Walker claims her first top ten finish. This meant the top three drivers in the points race, Berriau, Grahm and Olson, kept theeir place and pulled a couple more points in front of their challengers.

The divorce open While crowds of people made their way into town to take part in the fesitivities of Billy Barker Days, a few couples escaped the noise and bustle for the greener pastures of the Quesnel golf course. Known in other towns as ‘The Divorce Open,’ couples played the course, each teeing off and then choosing whose ball they wanted to play, which they would take turns playing until they managed to sink the ball. This called for not only good golfing, but a steady relationship lest a big number and a small, white ball get between couples. Justin Neufeld and Nicole Labrecque, from Prince George, came away from the weekend with the low net score. Quesnel locals Dan and Heather Rosengren took the low gross for the weekend. With a record amount of players for the tournament, the organizers were happy with the outcome. “It was a pretty big success,” Wendy Heppner, an organizer of the event, said. “There was lots of support from the community. Players from Kelowna, Abbortsford, 100 Mile, Prince George and Quesnel were at the course for the weekend. Heather Marchildon puts as her husband Frank, looks on at the His & Hers golf tournament at the Quesnel Golf Course on the weekend. Jonas Gagnon photo

The heart of Billy Barker Days: riding and roping JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter The scorching heat made for a dry paddock and many a red neck at the 46th Annual Quenel Rodeo last weekend. The rodeo had less serious events to go along with the official cowboy roping and riding. Featuring a wild horse race, where cowboys scrambled to catch and put saddles on horses, before racing them. A wild pony race, which was much the same, but infinitely cuter as the contestants were ponies and children. During the intermission, the rodeo also had a flat race the length of the track and a calf scramble, in which kids scrambled to take flags from calves and win $50. In the more serious events, Richard Glassford had the honour of taking first in breakaway roping in front of the hometown crowd. Chelsea Wallach, from Prince George, took second place, with Brandy Sledon, from Keremeos following in third. Junior breakaway roping also had a local in the top three.
For the Record The results for the Crash to Pass were misreported. It was #6 Matt Byrd in first, followed by #77 Dusty Mack in second and 23 Cory Loomis in third.
McKenzie Wills took third, following close behind Kyle Bell, from Houston, in second and Troy Gerard, out of Savona, in first. In peewee barrel racing, the Quesnel racers did well, as usual. This time around, however, Elly Farmer, from Savona snuck past the local girls to take first. Local Tyler Cherry was close on her tail in second. Dyson LeNeve, from Quesnel, rounded out the top three. In junior barrel racing, Lane Wills held up the honour of the hometown by Jody Coe ropes a calf at the Billy Barkers Days Rodeo. taking third. Cliff Schup, out of Tatla Lake, took first in saddle bronc. Garrett Modley and Joe Roberson, out of Alexis Creek and Merritt respectively, tied in the second/ third position. Steer wrestling also had a tie, with Riley Isnardy, Cache Creek, and Craig Allison, Clinton, tying for third/fourth. Merritt

Pat Crocker passed away peacefully, at the age of 86, at G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital on February 21st, 2012 with her loving family at her side. As our Mother and Grandmother she will always be remembered for her caring and loving ways. Together with her husband Clarence, she raised nine children. It was always so clear the pride she had for each and every member of her family. The door to her heart was always open as shown by her willingness to put the needs of other before her own. We will always treasure the time we shared with her and feel truly blessed to have had her in our lives as our Mother and Grandmother. In her final years she resided at Maeford Place Assisted Living Residence, Quesnel, BC., where she enjoyed many friendships which were so important to her. She is predeceased by her husband, Clarence Crocker, her sons; Gordon and Harold, her daughter; Joan and four grandchildren. Pat is survived by her sons; Pat (Deb), Rick (Joyce) and Tom (Chrissy), her daughters; Darlene (Marvin), Alanna (Ralph) and Shannon (Gary) as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. We will always love and remember you, Mom (Gramma)

Most new builds require electrical outlet boxes to be placed 12" off the floor. Adding an extra 4" and placing them 16" inches high, however, can be a lot more convenient and will not affect the look of the room. It's also useful to think about where furniture will be located and place the outlets accordingly; for instance, directly behind side tables instead of behind the sofa, to avoid running unsightly cords along walls unnecessarily.
