TERRACE - Maria and Luigi Maddalena have been selling their produce at the Terrace Farmer’s Market since 1986. Here they are at the July 21 market, where they ran out of all their stock except these cherries, picked the night before. President of the Farmer’s Market Norm Frank said right now about 10 per cent of the booths sell locally grown food but he expects that number to double as the area enters a late harvest season near the end of August.

KITIMAT - After 29 sleepless negotiation hours, Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) reached a tentative agreement with its unionized workers last Tuesday. Starting at 7 a.m. July 23 and finishing at noon July 24, representatives from the Canadian Autoworkers Union (CAW) Local 2301 and RTA kneaded out a temporary contract to replace the one that expired at midnight July 24. This contract came in time to stop a looming strike that was set to start at the same time, as 72 hour notice was given to RTA by
the union last Friday. The tentative contract includes increased worker pay and benefits among other things, and both parties are pleased with the result. Contract ratification meetings were held yesterday and this morning at Mount Elizabeth High School Gym. “We think it’s a good deal for both the employees and the company and it’s for five years, said RTA spokesperson Colleen Nyce of the tentative agreement. “All of our agreements cover off employees who work in the smelter and employees who work in our powerhouse in Kemano. Nyce said the contract negotiated is a standard type contract.
London 0MZNQJDT
“We negotiated wages and we negotiated certain other operational benefits for the employees, she said. “The tone of the negotiations was very good and both parties worked very diligently and respectfully to reach an agreement and they did so without a labour stopping so we’re very pleased about that. The contract was negotiated for a five-year term. As stated in a union press release last Tuesday, some of its details include wage increases at three per cent after one year, 2.5 for year two, 2.5 per cent for year three, 2.5 per cent for year four and three per cent for year five. A job security letter was re-
signed, meaning there will be no layoffs. All temporary workers will be hired to full time. Five terminated temporary welders will be hired to full time. A $2500 signing bonus for regulars, temporaries and LTD members is included as well as an agreement on classifications for workers in the KMP. The tentative contract also included pension multiplier increases, retiree benefits increases, active employee benefit increases and increases to shift, weekend, skilled trades and kemano premiums. “Five years is very good for us because it takes us through the modernization, said Nyce.

Ridley rail corridor deal reached By Alan S. Hale THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - The Federal Minister of International Trade, Ed Fast, and B.C. MLA Rob Howard, (who was standing in for the Transportation Minister, Blair Lekstrom) were in Prince Rupert last Friday to sign a deal that officially provides government funding for a railway utility corridor on Ridley Island. “We want to position Prince Rupert and Vancouver as the gateways of choice for the Asian economies to ship their products into the North American markets, so I’m happy to be here today to deliver on our government’s commitment,” said minister Fast. The federal and provincial governments are both contributing $15-million towards the $90-million dollar project, which is ex-
pected to greatly increase Ridley Island’s ability to attract new industrial operations while expanding the capacity of those already there. “Some of you may be asking ‘what are we getting? Are we getting a bang for our buck?’ I’m very pleased to tell you that in 2011, our exports to China alone increased by 27 per cent,” said Fast. The government contributions to the project are not new. Premier Christy Clark came to Prince Rupert last fall to announce the province’s contribution and Ed Fast was in the city in February to announce the Federal Government’s contribution. But with the stroke of a pen at a signing ceremony in the Port Authority’s new interpretive centre in Cow Bay, the deal was made official. With all of the funding lined up for the railway corridor, all that remains before the
project can become a reality are some remaining regulatory reviews. Prince Rupert Port Authority CEO Don Krusel says that once those are done, construction can begin before the end of 2012. “We are finalizing all of the environmental review procedures and we expect to get all of that wrapped up with permits in place in September or October,” said Krusel. “Once that is over, we will be getting shovels in the ground as soon as possible.” The federal government is already looking for future ways to improve the country’s transportation infrastructure to promote expanded trade with Asia. Federal Transportation Minister Dennis Lebel is currently traveling across the country to talk to municipalities and other stakeholders in order to have a national infrastructure plan in place by 2014.

HIV is a real concern within our communities. You can contract HIV primarily through unprotected sex and by sharing needles. HIV can live in your body for years without you knowing and all the while you can be passing it to others. At least 25 per cent of people who are HIV+ do not know and these 25 per cent are estimated to be responsible for 75 per cent of new infections. Northern Health, in collaboration with its community partners, is working with the Province of BC to prevent the spread of HIV by expanding HIV testing, treatment, and support services to British Columbians.

PRINCE RUPERT - On July 20th, 2012 at approximately 9:19 AM members of the RCMP West Coast Marine Services and Canadian Coast Guard responded to a report of a deceased man being located in Union Inlet along with a partially submerged vessel. Upon arrival at the scene police located a partially submerged vessel and the body of a deceased man. This man was identified at Wolfgang Weidner of Terrace, British Columbia. In speaking with Mr. Weidner’s friends it appears as though he set out on a two to three day fishing trip to the area in which he was located, and was expected to return the previous night. “It is with great sadness that we are having to inform the public of this incident, and our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragic event”, stated Cst. Matt Ericson, spokesman for the Prince Rupert RCMP. “At this stage of the investigation it appears as though Mr. Weidner was the sole occupant in the vessel and no foul play is suspected”. The Prince Rupert RCMP are asking anyone that may have information regarding this incident to contact the Prince Rupert RCMP Detachment at 250627-0700 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Kitimat council approves RTA’s bid for liquor license By Sean Glanville THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
KITIMAT - Kitimat city council voted in favour of Rio Tinto Alcan’s proposal for a liquor-primary license to serve alcohol at their Kitimat camp. The camp which serves hundreds of temporary workers for the Kitimat Modernization Project plans to build a facility known as The Lounge where workers will be able kick back after their shift. The license still needs to be put through the BC Liquor Board for final approval. Local liquor establishments hoped council would amend this proposal for a food-primary license instead of a liquor-primary license, with the major difference being that patrons from the camp to do not have to order food to be served alcohol. “The primary license operates like a regular lounge so basically you’ve taken those people off the market place for going into Kitimat and having a drink, meals, taking a taxi and so on,” says Northstar Inn manager Jim Thom. Another key debate was the issue of off-sales, and council agreed to the proposal under the condition that off-sales would not be served. “I have talked to the liquor inspector himself and he has informed me they will not be allowed to sell off-sales,” says Thom. The rule for off-sales is the camp premises have to be 30 kilometres or
more away from any existing liquor establishment and the Kitimat Hotel is the break-mark spot about five kilometres away. Thom was disappointed with council’s decision to grant the license. “I’d like city council to listen to us, we’ve gone through 20 years of hard times right now,” says Thom. “Old businesses and prospective businesses interests in this town are not protected and that is really going to hurt us all. We all need a fair share of this investment.” Phil Germuth, the lone councillor to vote against the proposal, agued that the camps are doing little to support Kitimat. He cited how the camps meat and other groceries are being trucked in from Alberta. The issue of camp workers not being able to take a leave of absence (LOA) also was discussed. “I would have liked workers at the camps to be able to take an LOA to come into town and spend money but they are forced to stay in the camp which hurts the town,” explains Thom. Local business owners say this is only adding salt to their wounds as the establishment of the camp in first place has taken business from local accommodation. “All the motels and hotels have been basically screwed by having the camp there in the first place but at the same time nobody is allowed to go visit, unlike the old camps,” adds Thom.

NWCC anthropology adventure TERRACE - On National Aboriginal Day and the summer solstice, students from Northwest Community College (NWCC) embarked on a journey to the pristine Kitlope ecosystem, and the ancestral homeland of the Haisla and Henaaksiala people. Student Courtney Berdan summed up the trip as “one great adventure, with a whole lot of little adventures within it. The cultural anthropology class and instructor Sheree Ronaasen, were hosted by the Nanakila Institute Society chair Gerald Amos, director Nancy Nyce and Rodney Smith. The first stop along the Gardener Canal was at the old village site at Crab River. After landing on shore, students walked carefully through the giant devil’s club,to learn about the harvesting of balsam bark and traditional medicines. While anchored at Crab River, students also helped bring in the crab traps and, like Berdan, for some it was a first to hold on to a live crab. Later on, students experienced how to shell crabs, which Nyce transformed into beautiful crab cakes. The first overnight stop was at Europa hot springs; surrounded by ferns, students relaxed in the thermal water, and shared their experiences from the activity-filled day. The next day the tour proceeded up the Gardener Canal, and stopped at a special island to learn about important plants, including rice root, silverweed, and how to harvest yellow cedar. The students proceeded along the fjord to view the steep glacier carved rock walls of the upper Gardener Canal. After setting prawn traps, students spent the night at Kemano. The group was fortunate to have a special tour of the oolican camps and learn

about the processing and importance of these little fish. Over supper, students were captivated and privileged to see across the Wahoo River three huge grizzly bears river grazing on eel grass of the tidal estuary. After departing at the 5 a.m. high tide, students were excited to participate in the retrieval of the prawn traps, and to see what came out of the water. “I never knew prawns could grow so big, said Parker McKenzie. The cultural tour proceeded along to the end of the canal, to the estuary of the Kitlope River and the old village site of Miskusa, where the replica of the G’psgolox pole stands today. Students learned of the remarkable story of the return of the original pole from Sweden. For the complete story, refer to the NFB production Totem: Return of the G’psgolox Pole. The last night was spent at the Kawesas Lodge. Students reminisced about their experiences on the tour, and tried to savour every last bit. Supper was superb that night, highlighting fresh prawns from the sea. “This was the best trip ever, said Tracey McKay. “You will feast like kings. “I’ve lived in the community for 18 years, and did not know or understand the depth and beauty of the area. Prince Rupert airport reps make their pitch to WestJet By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - With Westjet weighing their options for a regional airline service, representatives from Prince Rupert were invited to Calgary to make their pitch to the company for a stop on the north coast. YPR manager Rick Reed was joined by economic development officer Derek Baker and others to the meeting, with only 35 airports across Canada being invited. According to Reed, the meeting was a very productive one. “They asked a lot of questions about the community, the demographics, age, income, traffic numbers for the past several years,

Nass Valley For a short scenic adventure, hit the Nisga’a Highways and within an hour you’ll be driving through the youngest lava ow in Canada. For off-road adventure, The Terrace Motocross Association recently opened a two-track facility featuring an outdoor style motocross track and a novice/kids track near the Terrace Airport on Hwy 37 South. Four-wheeling can lead you to prime ďŹ shing sports or mountain top views. The dramatic landscape fused with the rich Nisga’a culture makes the Nass Valley a very unique experience. ty are at a fairly high level, and that gives people more discretionary income. So we’re not only seeing an increase in business travel, but also in leisure travel, said Reed. “We emphasized that we’re not in a boom/bust economy, but are a community that is experiencing continued growth over the next decade. Westjet has purchased a fleet of 20 Q400 planes from Bombardier to launch their regional service, but people in the community and the province shouldn’t expect an answer or announcement any time soon. “They told us they were gathering information from a number of communities and would be making a decision in
April or May about routes, he said. “The decision has not been made if the service will first be launched in eastern Canada or western Canada or a combination of both. Regardless of Westjet’s decision, Reed said there are some big projects being looked at out on Digby Island that include redoing the asphalt on the runway and major renovations to the terminal building. “We are, after all, the gateway to the community. Anyone who arrives here, the terminal is their first impression. It’s clean, but it’s also pretty old, he said, adding that the renovations will help increase the seismic rating of the building.

It’s not the destination, it’s the journey. Hop on a motorcycle, quad, or dirt bike to hit the winding highways or trails for motorized vehicles.
Approximately 250 years ago a volcano erupted consuming thousands of Nisga’a citizens and forcing them to relocate their villages. In the Nass Valley you may stop in at the Nisga’a Camp Ground and Visitors Center to book a guide to take you right to the cone of the volcano. There are four Nisga’a communities to go to, all including their own attractions for everyone to check out: Gitlakdamix (New Aiyansh); July 14, is having a Nass Valley Fun Day! The kid’s events are featuring a 10 km run, and canoe races, as well as a BBQ by donation and live music. Gitwinksihlkw (Canyon City); a great place to check out the historic suspension bridge, which was one of the only ways into the city until about 10-15 years ago. Laxgalts’ap (Greenville);
was once a great place for oolichan ďŹ shing, and now home to the museum. Gingolx (Kincolith); located at the mouth of the Nass River, at the ocean’s edge, has a wonderful view. The new museum is not only culturally wondrous, but the building it’s self is architecturally amazing. While driving through these societies make sure to stop at any and all the fascinations in the area. Don’t forget to stop at places such as “The Peeing Tree,â€? Vetter or Beaupre Falls, and the Nisga’a Government building. You may also stop at the many viewing points looking over the waterfalls, lake, and the natural scenery. There is a bed and breakfast off the highway past Vedder Falls called The Vetter Falls Bed and Breakfast. You can contact them or see their rates at http://www.vetter-falls-lodge.com/en/

Bridges are off limits for fireworks viewing why the RCMP called us to a meeting to say it was an accident waiting to happen,” said Gibson. Crowds of people have traditionally gathered along the bridges to watch the Saturday late-night fireworks. The old bridge will be closed to traffic as usual and people can go there to watch the fireworks or to Ferry Island; the only concern with going there is that there’s no lighting, she added. The fire department will ensure that while people can go down to Ferry Island, they won’t be able to go through a barricade into the area where the fireworks are set off. Areas of the Bench also offer prime fireworks watching spots as well. The fireworks are on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 11 p.m.

TERRACE - You might want to go early to find a spot to watch the fireworks at Riverboat Days this year. For the first time, the Hwy16 bridges that span the Skeena River at Ferry Island will be closed to pedestrians for safety reasons, says Riverboat Days committee president Joyce Gibson. “We’re not allowing people on the new bridges and that is on the request of the RCMP and ministry of highways,” she said. After last year’s Riverboat Days, and a few problems, the RCMP and ministry met with the committee to discuss the danger of people watching fireworks on the new bridge while traffic is travelling over it, she said. “I’ve sat up there by Walmart and those trucks don’t slow down for nothing and that’s

Captain and Queen named TERRACE - The Riverboat Days Captain and Queen have the distinction of being the first married couple in the roles in five years. George and Tessie Clark have been named this year’s couple and will be in the parade and at many of the planned events. “It’s a great honour,” said George Clark. The Clarks moved from London, England to Canada in 1975, heading first to Vancouver for six months where George took a job before they were transferred to Terrace and the head office of the company Northern Securities. “We had the intention to stay for a year,” says George, adding that was 30-plus years ago. When the company went out of business that same year, he bought the travel company he was working for, which was called Terrace Travel at that time. When it expanded into Prince Rupert and Kitimat, he renamed it Elan Travel. Tessie worked for the Bank of Montreal, CIBC and the Business Development Bank before she retired. The Clarks raised their daughter and son here; both

But George says they have no intention of moving away to be closer to them. “We love Terrace,” he says. Clark has been emceeing the Pacific Northwest Music Festival gala night for 20 or so years now after being asked. George continues to work and has trying to work fewer days a week but the company is getting busier lately.
For visitors to Riverboat Days, George lets them in on a bit about Terrace. He and his wife aren’t the only ones who came for a short time and decided to stay. “The one thing that is amazing about Terrace is our intention was to come here for one year and we never left and it’s surprising how many people say the same thing,” says George. “The people are nice and friendly. It’s nice to raise kids here.”

Request for QualiďŹ cations outlines extent of new QCC hospital By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
QUEEN CHARLOTTE - Queen Charlotte is moving closer to a new hospital, with the government releasing a Request for Qualifications on July 18. Along with the request was a list of what can be expected to replace the old facility - which was built in 1950, was becoming derilect and included an Atco trailer doubling as a morgue - and it is quite an extensive
list. The replacement hospital will feature eight acute-care beds, plus one labour, delivery and recovery suite. The redevelopment will provide a modern environment for the delivery of public and mental health and addictions programs, and home and community care services. A newly reconfigured hospital layout will benefit the delivery of acute and emergency services, which will include designated program space for diagnostic imaging, as well as laboratory an pharmacy services. A new
home and community care house with eight residential care beds for clients with complex needs will also be included. It will also meet LEED Gold certification. “This project is an important investment in the future for the people who live in the Village of Queen Charlotte and surrounding communities, said Cathy Ulrich, Northern Health CEO. “It will provide improvements that enable the ongoing delivery of quality and sustainable health-care
services. The overall total project cost of the new hospital is expected to be up to $50 million; the final cost will be confirmed once the competitive selection process is complete and a contract is signed with the successful bidding team. Funding will be cost-shared by the government of B.C. and the North West Regional Hospital District. As well as providing a better facility for health care, it is hoped that the new facility help to attract and
retain quality health care professionals in the community. Once construction of the new hospital gets underway, it is expected that the project will generate approximately 189 direct jobs and 143 indirect jobs as well as stimulate the local economy. “The North West Regional Hospital District and Village of Queen Charlotte are very pleased to see the beginning of the procurement process for this long- awaited hospital, said mayor Carol Kulesha.
New credit union CEO outlines goals By Shaun Thomas THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - At the start of this month, Ken Doleman took the helm of Northern Savings Credit Union as the new CEO and he says the experience so far has been positive. “This organization has been really successful, and part of my role is to learn from that success, see what we’ve been doing right and add my own experience and perspective to that so that we have a strong future to benefit the northwest and the communities we serve, said Doleman, who arrived in Prince Rupert from Manitoba. “Northern Savings Credit Union has a great history and a great story, and to be able to help write the next chapter is both a privilege and a challenge. With branches in Prince Rupert, Terrace, Masset and Queen Charlotte, Doleman said he will be using his 12 years
of experience as CEO of a regional institution to work in bringing the best service possible to each of the communities. “We have a number of priorities, but the common theme is strengthening the relationship we have and the value we offer to the communities Northern Savings Credit Union serves, including the First Nations communities, with a focus on striving to build for the future...We need to continue to be clearly focussed on our members, he said. “Another objective is to ensure we offer a suite of financial services for our members, and this is to more seamlessly tie together our core banking services with our insurance and financial advising offerings. It is a holistic view of our members. They need more than our core banking services, and those needs change throughout their lifetime. Part of member services will be continuing to develop the co-op
model used at the credit union, which Doleman says aligns with his personal principles. “The co-op model fits the uniqueness of the communities we serve because it has local decisions, a level of au-

tonomy and its focus is responsibly meeting the needs of the local community, he said. “As CEO, it gives you a great deal of latitude to develop opportunities for the membership.

SPORTS
Inside Triathlete takes silver at games By Submitted THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
SURREY - The BC Summer Games is a whirlwind weekend full of competing, eating and making new friends. How exciting to get on a charter plane with a bunch of people you know and go off to an enormous sporting event, often for the first time? There are the opening and closing ceremonies, where the song “Because we Dream” – commissioned just for the games – was sung live. There are two dances and many sporting events other than their own for the participants to attend. A remarkable and exciting weekend, it is understandable why kids are in tears when it’s time to go home. In triathlon, three great teenagers, Morgan Weir from Prince Rupert, Courtney Chanin from Kitimat and Thomas Christensen from Terrace made zone 7 proud. The sport of triathlon involves swimming, biking and running – there are three different events to complete. On Friday, the zone 7 athletes competed in two races. The aquathlon, a 300m swim followed by a 1km run is the first race. The duathlon: a 1km run, 5km bike and 1km run event is held next. This gives these developing
athletes an opportunity to race on the course before the triathlon event held on Saturday. The triathlon, a 400m swim, 10km bike and 3km run, was hard fought. “All three of our wonderful athletes behaved as responsible, kind and exemplary people, racing with guts and integrity,” said coach Crystal Thomas. Kitimat’s Courtney Chanin came away with a silver medal in the aquathlon and truly pushed herself to new heights. Chanin was the only competitor outside the Lower Mainland/Vancouver Island area to receive a medal in triathlon. Coaches Willie Muller and Thomas said they were very impressed with these young adults. “We often found themselves wondering why we were so lucky to have such great kids to work with,” said Thomas. In 2014, the games will be held in Nanaimo and it will be another chance for triathletes from zone 7 to go and show the province what amazing young people we have here. It’s never too early to start training: go for a swim, get on a bike or have some fun running with friends in preparation for the next games, an event that year after year proves to be an experience of a lifetime.

Hill Climb organizer Harley Bell, right, presents Kevin Enmark with the 2012 King of the Hill Trophy.
KITIMAT - Kitmat’s Kevin Enmark was crowned King of the Hill winner at the Dave Saunders Memorial Hill Climb during Kitimat Canada Day celebrations. Enmark, aboard his Yamaha V-max 4 cylinder 750cc snowmobile, was too quick on the day, He won all five of his races including the King of the Hill final against the Leavitt Machinery Truck in a blistering 5.6 seconds. Enmark competed in the very first King of the Hill race a few years back, but this was his first time winning the event. He made a triumphant return to racing after taking the past few years off.
“I just got back into racing this year. I do the Terrace races, I go to Houston and once in a while I’ll hit Prince George if it works out for me,” says Enmark. The local machine operator has been racing on and off for 12 years. He is strictly a snowmobile racer. “I just race my snowmobile against whoever races against me,” added Enmark. He captured the Bikes and Sleds category as well, taking top spot ahead of his brother Shawn Enmark who took runner up honours. For the King of the Hill they take the winners from each class and then race them off until a winner is crowned.
“When we race for King of the Hill we race everybody – cars, trucks, motorcycles, bikes, railcars, whichever is racing that day,” explains Enmark. Enmark plans to be back next year to defend his title and keep the King of the Hill trophy in Kitimat. Next up for the northwest drag racing scene is the “Hot August Nites” drag racing event in Terrace. Held Sunday, August 5 and Monday August 6 at the Terrace/ Kitimat Airport, the event is part of the annual Riverboat Days celebrations. Visit prautoclub.com for photos of the Hill Climb, history, and information about upcoming races.
A busy time at Prince Rupert’s Centennial Golf Course By Moe Hays THE NORTHERN CONNECTOR
PRINCE RUPERT - When the weather heated up, so did the competitive activity at the Centennial Golf Course, following a short break after the Jubilee Events. The seventh annual Founders Cup Matches, pitting male members over 50 years of age against a younger team, produces some of the most intense competition of the
year. The Senior Team has ruled the event, taking five titles, while losing once, since the inaugural event in 2006. The Junior team featured low Handicaps and hot players led by the 2011 Club Champion Ian Robinson, as well as Junior Boys Champion, Stenn Sundin, replacing Layne Young, who took on the role of non-playing Captain. Brian Hoilkestad, winner of
the Vic Marion Seniors, played the leading role for the Seniors. After forty matches, the Seniors prevailed, receiving outstanding performances from the combo of Cu Phan and Ken Bazansky, as well as some giant killing from the most Senior participant Carl Neilsen. The Mens Club Championship, 36 six hole finale took place this past weekend, with Ian Robinson successfully defending his title. Past Champion, Robert McDonald
finished in the runner-up spot. Robinson prevailed on the Sunday’s final nine, after being challenged by McDonald and Stenn Sundin, in the early going. The Ladies Club has been active, with a nice representation at the Skeena Valley Tournament and a group preparing to venture to Kitimat for the Hirsch CreeK Ladies event, this coming weekend. Rose Holkestad, Cynthia Rosario and Selma Standring have tak-
en Low Gross Awards, this month, while Carol Schaeffer, Maria Wells, Sally Newton and Marie Dickens have taken Low Net prizes. Long drivers have been Janet Sheppard, Andrea Pollock, Cynthia Rosario, Hilma Pylot, Joanne Sylvester and Fran Colussi. On the greens, Barry Anne Bury, has been finding the cup, taking a Low Putt Award while Margaret Chan has a Closest to the Pin title.
