Several areas of Nanaimo shoreline are closed to bivalve shellfish harvesting after a malfunction at the Chase River pump station released raw sewage into the Nanaimo River Estuary Friday. The Re gional District of Nanaimo said an equipment malfunction during routine maintenance resulted in an overflow of wastewater into the estuary near the pump station, which is at the north end of Haliburton Street near the Island Highway. Raw sewage leaked for about two hours directly into the Chase River, which drains into the estuary. Sean DePol, manager of wastewater services for the RDN, said the faulty equipment was fixed and the overflow stopped, and that an earlier advisory for residents to avoid water contact in the area was lifted by Monday afternoon. “We solved the problem as quickly as possible and notified all the necessary agencies immediately,” said DePol. Fisheries and Oceans Canada responded by closing harvesting of all bivalve shellfish in Departure Bay, the northeastern portions of Newcastle and Protection islands, and the northwestern portion of Gabriola Island. Re gional District of Nanaimo municipalities are teaming up to fight climate change and pursue goals of carbon emission reduction. Lantzville, Nanaimo, Parksville and Qualicum Beach signed on separately to the province’s legally non-binding Climate Action Charter in an effort to protect the environment, but together, city officials say they can tackle the problem more efficiently. About ninety-five per cent of B.C. municipalities have signed up for the provincial program. Requirements under the charter include that municipalities become carbon neutral in 2012, measure and report community greenhouse gas emissions, and create energy-efficient communities. A city staff report says it is unlikely Nanaimo will ever cut emissions to zero and will need to buy carbon offsets in order to achieve its carbon neutral goals. The report says the city currently sets aside $175,000 annually for projects designed to conserve

energy or lower greenhouse gas emissions. That money will now be needed to buy offsets, which generally sell at $25 per tonne. “We’ re oblig ated to become carbon neutral and what we thought the impact of that would be that we would have to buy carbon offsets from somebody, like the Pacific Carbon Trust,” said Brian Clemens, the city’s director of finance. “But now we have an opportunity where instead we can use the money in our own community because the RDN took the initiative to create this regional approach.” Based on a 2008 study, Nanaimo is responsible for about 6,500 tonnes of emissions annually. ◆ See ‘NANAIMO’ /5

B.C. Privacy Commisioner Elizabeth Denham is warning both the provincial government and private sector employers are making too much use of criminal record checks. She issued an investigation report recommending the province limit its use of checks, which are used to vet prospective employees and re-screen some existing staff. Record checks are important tools in hiring staff who will work with vulnerable adults or children or wield great spending or dataaccess powers, she said. But in some cases, she said, government conducts ongoing or multiple checks on the same employee, adding that shouldn’t happen without good reason. B.C. Civil Liberties Association executive director David Eby said the problem is not just criminal record checks but broader police information checks that also pull in data recorded in the PRIME-BC police database. Most of the B.C. population is in PRIME – often as witnesses, 911 callers or other contacts in a police investigation – and some are recorded as having had “adverse contact” with police. That designation can spell rejection for a job applicant or prospective tenant who agrees to a request for a police information search, Eby said. “It’s completely at the discretion of the police and it’s incredibly overused,” Eby said of the “adverse contact” designation in the database. editor@nanaimobulletin.com

Student puts summer holiday on ice I

sabella Thorsteinsdottir hopes to study endangered species in the Arctic one day. The Dover Bay Secondary School student is on her first trip to that region of the world this summer with the Students on Ice Youth Expedition 2012. Thorsteinsdottir, 15, is one of about 80 students aged 14-18 from around the world selected to participate in the ship-based journey with 35 scientists, historians, artists, explorers, educators, leaders, innovators and polar experts from July 29 to Aug. 13. She is also one of five female students to get a Leacross Foundation scholarship to pay for the trip. The excursion educates students about environmental issues facing the Arctic and they will participate in shore landings, interpretive hikes, community visits, Zodiac cruises, workshops and research activities as the ship travels along the east coast of Baffin Island and to the west side of Greenland. “They want us to make connections between natural systems and humans and reflect on those experiences we have,” said Thorsteinsdottir, who moved to Nanaimo from Iceland five years ago. “Since I came from Iceland, I’m really connected to the north.” Thorsteinsdottir is a member of the Dover Bay Eco Club, the school’s outdoors club and GAIA Activism, a global network of youth working to ensure a

sustainable future. She’s on the trip to further her understanding of environmental

issues, to experience the spectacular natural scenery – in her spare time, she does a lot of hiking and

just returned from a five-day trip to Nootka Island with the school’s outdoors club – and to learn as much as she can from the experts and other students on the trip. “I think it will teach us a lot about independence and leading people,” said Thorsteinsdottir. “I’m hoping to learn more about planning and preparation, talking to people and leading, for example, the eco club.” She learned about the Arctic opportunity through another eco club member, Cassandra Elphinstone, who heads to the University of B.C. in the fall. Elphinstone went on the trip last year and another former Dover Bay student, Carson Hardy, went the year before. Thorsteinsdottir wants to study medical sciences and become a veterinarian, which combines her love of biology and animals. “I love animals – I have some horses and a couple dogs,” she said. “I really hope to be able to travel to remote places and do research for endangered species. I’m definitely going to try to continue my environmental activism.” Clare Glassco, Students on Ice participant coordinator, said there were about 55 applications for the five Leacross Foundation scholarships offered this year and Thorsteinsdottir was picked for her leadership potential, among other things. “Her communication skills are phenomenal,” she said. “In her application form, she was hugely articulate, which is even more amazing given English is her second language.” For more information about the trip, please go to www.studentsonice.com/arctic2012. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Regional district board balks on banning bottled water A request for the Regional District of Nanaimo to become a blue community last week got half-hearted support from directors. Directors opted to fulfill only one of the three requirements needed to get the designation. The request called for the district to declare access to clean water as a human

right, to support public ownership of water facilities and to ban the sale of bottled water at RDN facilities and events. Carol Mason, chief administrative officer, said the recognition of water as a human right is not within the purvew of the RDN’s mandate, suggesting it would be more appropriate

for the federal government to do so. She added the RDN already supports public ownership of water utilities. Those two aspects received no dissent from the board, but banning bottled water sparked debate. Mason said the board has a policy of supporting healthy food choices at its

2012-17924 On July 9, and again on July 17, John Barsby Secondary School was broken into. In the first incident, security found a gym door on the south side of the building pried open. Suspects made their way into the gymnasium then threw floor hockey gear around. Nothing appeared to have been taken. On July 17, a window to classroom No. 115 had been broken allowing for access to the building. Nanaimo likely needs to buy carbon offsets

Nanaimo residents are being asked to share their thoughts on a proposed science centre in Bowen Park. The centre is being proposed by the Nanaimo Science and Sustainability Society. Public feedback will help the city’s parks, recreation and culture department assess community support of the concept. A survey, which includes an overview description of the project and a site map, is available online at www.surveymonkey.com/ s/3SSNJ6C. An open house will also be held at the proposed site in early September. “The issue at hand now is really about public land use,” said Coun. Diana Johnstone, chairwoman of Parks Recreation and Culture Commission, in a press release. “We want to hear if residents of Nanaimo support the idea of public park land being used for a science centre. The group is not asking for a financial commitment from the public for the building of the centre.” Over the past year, the proponents held a community visioning session, design charette and program development workshop regarding their plans. The group has support from school districts in the area, Vancouver Island University, DFO, local scientists and teachers, community leaders and a variety of other groups and organizations. Nationals put dogs, handlers to tough test Agility association brings country’s biggest canine competition to Nanaimo this weekend (Aug. 3-5) BY BETH HENDRY-YIM THE NEWS BULLETIN

Volunteers, handlers and judges are raising the bar as one of the largest and most exciting canine events comes to Nanaimo. Beban Park will host the Agility Association of Canada’s National Agility Trial this weekend (Aug. 3-5). “It’s like the Spruce Meadows of the canine world,” said Bernadette Van Klavaren, event chairwoman. “It displays the highest level of connection and teamwork between dog and handler.” Teams from across Canada and the U.S. have worked their way up the competitive ladder to qualify for this event. Those who made it are some of the best in North America. The objectives: to navigate a challenging series of obstacles, beat the clock, get a perfect score and qualify for the World Championships to be held next year in Johannesburg, South Africa. Judges for the event come from across Canada and were hand-picked by the organizing committee. “We chose judges that are sharp with lots of experience and who have kept up their judging skills by competing and officiating at many smaller events,” Van Klavaren said. A master’s level judge herself, she explained that each judge designs multiple courses that

are randomly selected and assigned. “At this level, judges add components to the design that supersize the challenges for the handling team through technical aspects, discrimination and speed challenges,” she said. “Time and accuracy are the key to success.” That means sharper turns, better listening and perfectly choreographed movements for both handler and dog. Tom Ikeda is no stranger to national-level competition and has two canine partners – Pepper, who placed tenth at the 2010 trial and Kuma. Ikeda said his team’s strengths will help them navigate these added challenges. “Pepper listens really well, and when I ask him to take an obstacle, he does. Kuma has longer legs and runs faster,” said Ikeda. Pepper, a miniature Schnauzer, was the first dog Ikeda ever owned and he took on the responsibility of training with a passion. At 71, Ikeda has many competitions left to attend, especially with four-year-old Kuma, his second Schnauzer. But this year will be Pepper’s last great hurrah. “He’s starting to slow down, and just had an operation to remove a tumour on his liver. This time our focus is to get through the course without me losing my way, and to have fun.” Having fun is what this kind of event is all about. Hannah King, spokeswoman for the city’s parks, recreation and culture department, said events like this are seen as a way to improve overall lifestyle with people getting involved, being entertained, active and meeting new people.

Local heroes earned cheers The sixth Olympic ring is schadenfreude. In the days and weeks leading up to Friday’s opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Games in London, the international media were gleefully chronicling the myriad of gaffes and shortcomings that have organizers scrambling and issuing statements of reassurance that all will be well. First it was the weather, cold and rainy then suddenly so hot power lines for a new rail service to the Olympic stadium were melting, resulting in delays and shutdowns. Ah yes, transportation, the eternal Achilles heel of every modern Olympics; if it’s not cabbies protesting on the Tower Bridge, it’s everyday commuters fretting through gridlock to allow Olympic officials free passage along exclusive traffic lanes. There are worries about security, as the private company contracted to make the Games safe underestimated the magnitude of the job, necessitating the deployment of the military. Customs agents are threatening to strike. And nobody is sure how much it will all cost in the end. Sound familiar? Two years ago we were sweating many of those very same issues in the days preceding Vancouver’s Winter Olympics. And no one was more vocal in their criticism than the British media; one paper even girded their readers for “the worst Games ever.” But all of the problems were forgotten as soon as Wayne Gretzky lit the Olympic cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza. Just as they likely were when the torch was set ablaze in London. And we’ll all settle in for two weeks of dazzling athletic competition, compelling human interest stories and national pride. We’ll cheer everyone in red and white, but especially for our local heroes. There are starving people right here in Nanaimo who would give anything for that food. A trip down to Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank for an article on the lack of food on their shelves provided me with a good reminder and a sense of shame. Historically, donations of food to organizations like the food bank, 7-10 Society and Salvation Army drop in summer. I know that, and yet, obviously like so many other people in Nanaimo, do nothing about it. Peter Sinclair, Loaves and Fishes executive director, told me a story of a woman asking for help because all she had to eat for three days was Miracle Whip. I literally cringed when I heard that, thinking of the times I go to the fridge and mutter “there’s nothing good to eat” because I’m tired of barbecued chicken. Or how annoyed I am when there’s not enough milk for my morning cereal and I have to go to the store and buy another jug. Those of us who ‘have’ are blessed. And while most work hard for what we have in this life, but for the grace of God it could be us eyeing the Miracle Whip as it’s the only item in the fridge to eat. Money not worth pipeline risks

To the Editor, Re: Environmental value too high, Opinion, July 26. Since 1955, as a tourist, and then in 1972, as a permanent resident, I’ve spent most of my leisure time camping and fishing throughout Vancouver Island and surrounding waters Anyone, under similar circumstances, could not help but notice some of the violent tidal forces throughout the straits. The more violent being Johnston Straits, the Skookumchuk, Princess Louisa inlet, Campbell River, Dodd Narrows and the hundreds of islands common to these waters. This cyclical event occurs approximately twice a day. These waters are the natural habitat of a good percentage of all sea creatures and thousands of species of fowl. Into this pristine scenario, if Stephen Harper’s proposal comes to fruition, huge tankers carrying millions of gallons of black crude oil, will attempt to navigate these waters. It is not a question of “if ” but “when” the first tanker runs aground. It took only a few minutes of inattentiveness to cause the Queen of the North to hit a rock and sink. Imagine a tanker three hundred meters long attempting to manoeuvre these waters. Do not allow Ottawa to lull you into believing safety precautions will prevent these accidents. The hundreds of shipwrecks around Vancouver Island are grim reminder of the treachery of local waters. Within days, due to tidal activity, every shoreline from

Cape Scott to the Straits of Juan De Fuca will be inundated with black crude, eventually migrating up and down the entire West coast. The dire consequences are unimaginable. Almost immediately, all commercial and recreational activity would cease. The very livelihood of a large portion of B.C. residents would be threatened. This project presents little benefit to B.C. and we would have to deal with the consequences. That our B.C. government hasn’t raised opposition to this project is absolutely amazing. The cleanup would be insurmountable. We are not opposed to exploiting our natural resourses, but not at the expense of our very existance. Peter Vogt Nanaimo

B.C.’s environment outweighs oil value To the Editor, Re: Environmental value too high, Opinion, July 26. Thank you sincerely for your firm and entirely correct editorial in which you

say the Northern Gateway Pipeline should not be considered at all. You are right on when you say that no amount of money could compensate us for the oil spill that is a certainty. It is unconscionable that this stinking, poisonous mixture of condensate and tar sands bitumen should be transported by pipeline anywhere. When it leaked into the Kalamazoo River in Michigan, the fumes made people sick for miles around and for days and weeks afterwards. Because it sank, it was impossible to clean up and cost Enbridge close to a billion dollars to try to return the river to its normal state. How many creatures died; how much of their eco system has been poisoned for generations? This toxic gunk should be refined at the tar sands. Even in a refined state, it’s deadly to the environment, but at least somewhat less so than as diluted bitumen. If we had a government worth their salt, they would have announced early on that the pipeline was a nonstarter. Thank goodness we have a government in waiting that is adamant in its opposition to either the Northern Gateway or the Kinder Morgan pipelines. Arlene Feke Nanaimo

As a transplanted Albertan who believes that Canada has little choice but to find ways to sell our products to Asia as well as the U.S., I’m most disappointed that our premier has chosen to take a separatist view (I thought separatists only lived in Quebec) and take a selfish view of the proposed pipeline similar to the one Quebec took when they extorted money from Newfoundland and Labrador for transmitting electricity over Quebec to markets in the U.S. While it is highly unlikely that I’ll vote NDP (the province can’t afford them during bad economic times, or even good ones) in the next election and the Conservatives have indicated they are agreeing with Premier Christy Clark’s separatist position (also for the almighty vote), I guess I’ll either have to go back to Alberta or bite my tongue and abstain from voting in the next election for the first time in my life. I find it strange that residents of B.C. who happily burn the energy they get from the existing pipelines in the province have now decided that all pipelines are bad, especially since much of the natural gas in northeastern B.C. is shipped to eastern and U.S. markets via pipelines that cross Alberta and other provinces and states in the U.S. none of whom try to extort B.C. for the privilege letting the gas flow. I thought the ‘Canadian way’ was to be Canadians first and British Columbians second. Fred McCreath Nanaimo

Letter writer mistaken on many points about pit bulls To the Editor, Re: Reputation of dogs a result of breeding, Letters, July 28. In response to Matt James’s castigation of the breed of pit bull, let me first say that, although I am a dog owner, I do not, nor have ever owned a pit bull, so I have no personal agenda; however, I feel they are undeserving of the bad reputation they seem to be gaining. The only North American air carrier I could find who had a prohibition on pit bulls was United, and it was lifted in spring of this year after much public outcry. As to the comment that, “These happy dogs can turn territorial and see red if they are triggered with an event that appears threatening”, I am sure the majority of dog owners would agree that most any breed can turn given the

right circumstance. The writer states that pit bulls are responsible for 30 per cent of deaths when it comes to bite attacks on humans. In charts from The National Canine Research Council of Canada, fatal dog bites tracked from 19642010 showed one Lab-cross pit bull out of a total of 47. Even in the case of the 51 true ‘fighting’ dogs that were apprehended from Michael Vick’s dog-fighting operation, 47 out of 51 dogs were given reprieves after being examined by experts. Those dogs have either been adopted, or are living their lives out peacefully at sanctuaries; some have even gone on to become therapy dogs, something which requires rigorous testing, and training, and the utmost confidence in the animal and its behaviour. The American Veterinary Medical Association has

this to say about this muchmaligned breed: “Owners of pit bull-type dogs deal with a strong breed stigma, however, controlled studies have not identified this breed group as disproportionately dangerous. … And as owners of stigmatized breeds are more likely to have involvement in criminal and/or violent acts – breed correlations may have the owner’s behaviour as the underlying causal factor.” Trish Mooney Nanaimo

More cancer study really not necessary To the Editor, Re: City part of cancer study, July 28. Do we really need another long-term cancer study? Sixty years or more, billions of dollars and the rate

stands around one in 10 for breast cancer and about the same for prostate cancer. May I suggest that those concerned and every reader of this newspaper check out the work of eminent U.K. scientist Jane Plant? Her credentials are impeccable and her personal story of her journey and successful battle against this disease is something everyone should know. Although this story has been documented by the U.K. Daily Mail and broadcast by the BBC, it remains totaly ignored in Canada, possibly because of the potentially commercial fallout once the general public gets to know. Again I urge everyone to check out her story and buy her book, Your life in your hands, because no one else is going to spread this information. George Robson Chemainus

Obon ceremony visits Nanaimo A special ceremony pays respect to deceased individuals of Japanese descent in Nanaimo Aug. 12. For more than 25 years, the B.C. Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples Federation, based on the mainland, has sponsored an annual Vancouver Island Obon Cemetery Tour to honour JapaneseCanadians who helped build the Island’s communities. Nanaimo is one of the stops on the tour. Obon is the Japanese Buddhist Feast of Lanterns, an annual festival originating in China that honours the spirits of family ancestors. Everyone who can travels home for family reunions where work bees are held to clean ancestor’s graves and monuments. It is believed their spirits return to visit their families’ household altars. The Obon ceremony at Nanaimo Public Cemetery, 555 Bowen Rd., starts at 9:30 a.m., will last about an hour and includes a grave clean-up. All members of the public are welcome to participate. Rev. Grant Ikuta, resident minister of the Steveston Buddhist Temple and the first Canadian-born Bishop of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada, will lead the services in Nanaimo and four other Island communities. Donation all heart The First Open Heart Society – Mid Island Chapter lost one of its own when Douglas Reid, a past-chairman and inspiration to society members, died of a heart attack in March. Reid’s positive influence was found in every aspect of the chapter through his passion to share his knowledge and experience regarding heart health, to the diligent work he did quietly behind the scenes. In honour of Reid’s commitment to those facing heart-related conditions, the chapter donated $2,700 to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation for the purchase of a crash cart for the new emer-

gency department at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. The crash cart is an essential tool for ER staff reacting to medical emergencies because it houses lifesaving equipment. “The family is extremely pleased that this gift will go on to help other families,” said Reid’s wife, Judy, a chapter director. The chapter supports anyone with heart-related problems. oug Cox still finds himself offering a bit of an introduction when he steps on stage. The musician’s favourite instrument is the dobro, a resonator guitar identified by the large, circular metal hub on the face. It’s popular with the blues style that Cox plays. He said it’s the most sensual

instrument he’s found, in the way it mimics the human voice. “You can pretty much make any sound on it that you can with the human voice,” he said. “It’s getting more and more popular.” Cox plays the dobro, along with his guitar and mandolin, with his friend and fellow musician Todd Butler at Headliners on Aug. 17. Cox, who’s been playing guitar since he was just eight years

old, heard the dobro for the first time in a club in Victoria where Jerry Douglas was performing that night. Cox put down his bottle-neck slide guitar and picked up a dobro. “There just happened to be one in a nearby music store,” he said. It’s a rare concert appearance for Cox, who’s been touring the U.S. and Europe with Betty Soo for the past eight months.

But he’s back home, having produced the latest Vancouver Island MusicFest, and is now working on two new albums. The first is inspired by a luthier and collector of guitars – each piece of music is written for a different guitar – and the second is of Cox’s original blues music. Joining Cox at the Headliners concert is Butler, most widely known for his satirical songs on CBC radio and television. But

Cox, whose known Butler for more than 30 years and played with him for 20, said Butler likes the opportunity to simply play music. “He likes the opportunity to play,” Cox said. “He’s a great guitarist.” The concert starts at 7 p.m. Tickets $20/advance from Arbutus Music, Fascinating Rhythm and Headliners; $25/door. Artists imagine heritage spots Artists are encouraged to take a new look at the city’s heritage buildings as part of an annual painting and photography competition. The Heritage PaintOut and Shoot-Out sees painters and photographers produce a work of art in just a few hours to present for judging. This year’s event is set for Sept. 15, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. On the day of the event, participating artists meet at Nanaimo Museum, where each will pull at random a heritage site in Nanaimo. It’s up to them to find the most creative way to capture the heritage space. At the end of the day, the artists gather back at the museum to find out who won the cash prizes. Last year Dan Gray’s painting of the Painted Turtle Guesthouse won top spot in the competition. The Nanaimo Arts Council, which supports the event in conjunction with the city, aims to have the artwork on display in its gallery at Nanaimo North Town Centre throughout October. James Fredrick Williams March 15, 1932 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; July 22, 2012 Jim Williams passed away on July 22, 2012 surrounded by his family. Jim was born and raised in Vanderhoof. After leaving school he moved to Revelstoke to work for the C.P.R. where he met Dolly. They were married in 1951 and had four children in Revelstoke before moving back to Vanderhoof to farm in 1961. Two more children arrived in Vanderhoof making the family complete. The familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ nal move was to Ladysmith in 1971 where Jim spent the next 40 years commercial ďŹ shing. He was a regular sight in town as he walked to the dock, or around town doing his business, and he was always quick to tell a story or a joke. Jim leaves to mourn his wife of 61 years, Dolly, and children Fred (Milena) George, Susan (Don), Raymond (Lynne), Henry (Dorraine), Jean (Mike), his 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, as well as his brothers Ross and Henry. The family would like to thank the ambulance staff, and the staff at Nanaimo hospital for the kind and caring way they dealt with Dad. Their compassion at this difďŹ cult time was immensely appreciated. A Celebration of Jimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life will be held on Thursday August 2, 2012 from 1-4 at the Eagleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hall, Ladysmith, B.C. The V.I. Raiders spent the last five days intensively building a team. Nanaimo’s Canadian Junior Football League club held its main camp at Port Alberni from Thursday to Monday, putting players through a twoa-day practice schedule. “One day at a time, we just kept on getting better and better and better,” said Glenn Boyce, Raiders linebacker. “There’s bumps and bruises along the way but we’re coming together as a family now so I’m excited to see what this group is going to be able to do on the field.” Coach Matthew (Snoop) Blokker said he was “extremely inspired” by his players. “We didn’t waste any time up here,” he said. “We were pretty sharp and our intensity level was high every practice and we really focused on what our task is, and that’s getting ready for Game 1.” Unable to schedule an exhibition game this month, the Raiders had to improvise a pre-season, and held a series of practices over the last two weeks leading up to camp.

“We were able to really identify our players before we got here and that gives you a better chance to put them all in a good position to succeed,” Blokker said. By camp’s end, he and the other coaches had identified starters on offence, defence and special teams. Running back Ashton Galloway was one player who excelled, handling a heavy workload, said the coach. Also on offence, receiver Dustin Pedersen brought a high tempo every practice, depth receiver Owen Reddick showed great improvement and rookie fullback Dustin Ellis-Kyle did a lot of different things well. Veteran offensive lineman Tyler Oldendorf was dominant and rookie O lineman Jordan Kuziek continued his learning curve. On defence the linebacking corps was excellent, as Jon Jones was a standout, Boyce was a leader and converted fullback Anthony Bienvenue impressed all the coaches. In the defensive backfield, Tremaine Apperley was at the top of his game. GAME ON … The V.I. Raiders kick off the 2012 CJFL season on the road Saturday (Aug. 4) with a 7 p.m. game against the Westshore Rebels. The Nanaimo Pirates did things the right way. Already assured a host berth in the B.C. Premier Baseball League championships this coming weekend (Aug. 3-5), the Hub City Paving Pirates qualified on their own merits. The team swept the Victoria Eagles on Saturday in a bestof-three series at Serauxmen Stadium, winning 7-1 and then 4-3. In the second game, the Pirates needed to score a run in the seventh inning to force extra innings, and then in the eighth, Crosby Rushton’s RBI single held up as

the game-winning hit. Pirates manager Doug Rogers liked the way his team responded to the intensity of playoff baseball. “We get challenged during the year, but it’s just not the same as when you have a lot of people in the stands and the games mean a lot,” he said. The Pirates’ comeback win seemed almost like a foregone conclusion considering the number of times the team won one-run ball games this season. “We’re fairly comfortable in those games,” said Rogers. “We know we can come back, we’ve done it so many times, that the seven innings,

The Nanaimo DBL Timbermen won one series by playing good playoff lacrosse, and they’ll need to do more of the same. The city’s senior B squad swept the Port Moody Thunder two games to none in the first round of the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association playoffs, and is now into the semifinals against the Tri-City Bandits. Nanaimo’s seriesclinching 8-3 victory over Port Moody came Saturday on the road, led by a 52-save performance by goaltender Ray Hodgkinson. “We really brought it together on Saturday and probably played one of our best games of the year from start to finish,” said Shawn Swanson, player and g e n e r a l m a n a g e r. “Defence kept all their shots to the outside and Ray had his best game of the year by far. And we got some secondary scoring.” Jon Diplock’s hat trick led the offence and Russell Thomas had two goals and four assists. Ryan Clark also scored a pair and Swanson had Nanaimo’s other tally. Getting past a capable Thunder team might serve the T-men well in the WCSLA semifinals, as they take on a No. 1-seeded Bandits squad that wasn’t really challenged in Round 1. “I like being in that position, playing a good team, having to play from start to finish in each game and not just blowing a team out,” Swanson said. GAME ON … The T-men and Bandits played Game 1 of their best-of-three series Monday on the mainland after press time. Game 2 goes Wednesday (Aug. 1) in a 7:30 p.m. start at Frank Crane Arena. Senior A T-men finish season The Nanaimo Coastal Windows Timbermen closed the books on the 2012 season with backto-back losses to the Victoria Shamrocks. The city’s Western Lacrosse Association club (6-11-1) lost 11-7 on Friday on the road, then dropped the next night’s rematch 14-10 at Frank Crane Arena. The T-men had already been eliminated from playoff contention going into the weekend. In the first game, Cory Conway led Nanaimo with a hat trick and Ryan Keith, Myles Kenny and Blake Kenny had the other markers. Zak Boychuk made 37 saves in defeat and the Shamrocks were 5-for-5 with the man advantage. In the finale, the visitors rushed to an 8-3 first-period lead en route to the win. Cody Bremner had two goals and two assists for Nanaimo and Keith and Graham Palmer scored a pair of goals each. Joel Henry, Chris O’Dougherty, Blake Kenny and Scott Ranger also scored for the Timbermen. Ranger clinched the WLA scoring title with 55 goals and 92 points.

Brady Rogers scored the winning run on Rushton’s hit in the eighth. “I just had to basically put something in play,” Rushton said. “It was nice that it went up the middle and dropped.” Colby Morgan was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run over seven innings, and Bryan Odgers picked up the save. Alex Rogers and Nathan Odgers had two hits apiece and Ben Dunbar doubled. In the first game, Luke Skingle was the winning pitcher, throwing a complete game while striking out five Eagles and allowing no earned runs.
