Summer storms sweeping through central Alberta has ground construction to a temporary halt and caused humans and animals to run for cover. This recent downpour slowed down Rimbey traffic and kept the sidewalks empty as pedestrians quickly found the nearest dry location. APN Photo
Road construction ongoing during summer By Treena Mielke Rimbey’s streets are beginning to look better and road construction is to continue into the summer. CAO Tony Goode said Raiders Concrete has been hired to complete road repair at the Post Office corner and the Beatty House corner and the work should begin later this summer. Work has now been completed on 51st Avenue between 47th and 48th streets and paving has been completed on 54th Avenue in front of the Rimbey Christian School.

Construction on the corner of 50th Street and 50th Avenue in front of the Vault and across from the Rimbey Review has been completed by Central City Asphalt and “In spite of the heavy rains we have been experiencing it has been working quite well. We have no pooling of water there,” Goode said. This spring council budgeted $1,090,546 for construction. Later they budgeted an additional $45,000 to repair the corners at the Post Office and the Beatty House.

Cost of lighting cast shadows on town’s budget By Treena Mielke Keeping the streetlights on in Rimbey could turn out to be an expensive proposition for town council. Stan Orlesky, manager of general stakeholder relations for FortisAlberta Inc., said the cost could escalate to close to half a million dollars for the replacement of the lights. “It could if we had to go in and dig up the sidewalks.” However, he said Fortis wants to work with council to come up with a less costly solution. “We’re looking at different solutions for replacement of the streetlights on the main street of Rimbey,” he said. The approximately 40 high pressure sodium lights have to be turned off and on manually, and Orlesky said fixing the problem is difficult as the replacement parts needed are difficult to locate. To make matters worse, The Illumination Engineering
Standards of North America require repairs on the lights to be completed within 14 days, and as Fortis has difficulty in obtaining the necessary parts, the company is not meeting those standards. The Fortis representative said the lights were installed by Alberta Transportation in the ’70s and later sold to the municipality. TransAlta took them over in the ’90s. An agreement with Fortis and the town states the municipality pays a non-investment rate of 16 cents per fixture for some lights and an investment rate of 57 cents for others. “It’s a mixed bag,” said Orlesky. Only the replacement of the bulbs and ballasts is included in the non-investment rate but replacements, repairs and maintenance are included in the investment rate. The heads and ballasts of the lights have been replaced by Fortis at no cost.
Coun. Paul Payson, who attended a Fortis Alberta Inc.-sponsored banquet in Red Deer that was attended by representatives from a number of municipalities, said the company is
working on the best possible solution for the lighting on Main Street in Rimbey. “They plan to offer us something. They have been thinking about this problem and will meet with us.”
New provincial agreement denied by council By Amelia Naismith Ponoka County council had an agreement with the provincial government that once the province rebuilt and paved Secondary Highway 607 the county would assume responsibility for the road. However, the province put one layer of asphalt down, which the county council won’t accept because it’s not up to standard of other county roads. The original agreement specified the county would be involved in the design of the road. According to county administrator Charlie Cutforth, no one came to talk to council about what was being done. Council withheld signing the agreement until the road was done or a cheque was sent for the cost of rebuilding the road. The province recently presented a new agree-

ment but Cutforth says it causes concerns. The new agreement says that in the future, when provincial budgets permit, an overlay will be laid on the road to county standards. Cutforth doesn’t believe this is good enough for council to accept. “When provincial budgets permit, and when might that be? Can you at least give us a maximum date.” Without attention from either the county or the province the road is starting to break up. Councillors decided that until the road is paved or compensation is given in lieu council will not accept the new agreement.

The fair brings out the kid in all Most days I am a responsible adult doing my best to follow a strict regime of diet, exercise and not too much TV. But for one brief magical moment in time, that all changed. I turned into a kid again. Why? I went to the fair. Treena Mielke Despite the fact the cute little girl at the ticket On The Other Side booth looked at me long and hard, no doubt trying to decide if I could be her grandma and charge me accordingly, I felt like a kid from the time my sparkly sandals hit the dirt of midway. The fair, with its potpourri of rides and screams and laughter and rows of games of chance, is a delightful assault to the senses. For one thing there are the people; lots and lots of people spilling out of the midway, filling the stands at the pony chucks, screaming in delirious excitement as they ride on a five-minute crest of terror. There are the food booths offering food at ridiculous prices that responsible adults such as I with an ounce of self-discipline should avert their eyes from. I didn’t, of course. I looked. I bought. I ate. And then there are the booths offering prizes that dangled in front of poor unsuspecting fair-goers such as I like eye candy. And, of course, there are the fortune tellers who could tell you in 10 minutes and so many dollars where your life was headed and in 20 minutes tell you how to get there. And there was the cheap jewelry, so dazzling and beautiful, it had me digging in my purse to see if I had any change left over from the food booths I had already frequented. “Stay away from that fair,” my brother warned me every year it came to town. “You’ll just be throwing away your money.” I loved my brother. Always have. Always will. But, sometimes, I found it best to give him a hug, blow him a kiss and then simply ignore him. “Want some cotton candy?” my sister asked, holding aloft her puff of pink delight. I thought about salads and fish for supper. I thought about B vitamins and green tea and pumpkin flax and skim milk and checking labels for fat content. And then hesitantly, in a lady like delicate way, I carefully detached a tiny bit of the pink fluff with my fingers and let it dissolve in my mouth. That was it. I was done. As the candy dissolved, so did my thoughts. Before I knew it, I was cramming handfuls of the sticky, sweet suff into my mouth and then licking my sticky fingers like there was no tomorrow. And that was not the end of it. Before the night was over I had consumed copious quantities of fudge, almost a whole bag of those little melt in your mouth donuts, a good portion of an elephant’s ear and a huge hamburger and an order of greasy fries. Of course, to appease my guilt, I washed it all down with a Diet Coke. But as I waddled back to the truck, half a packet of those sugar donuts clutched in my sticky fingers, I was absolutely, positively happy. A little sick, perhaps, but happy. And now I’m back. Salads. Exercise. Working hard. Working out. It’s all good. But, I’m glad; so glad, that one summer’s night not so long ago, I regressed very badly and and ate cotton candy and a whole bunch of other really bad stuff and allowed myself the absolute delight of laughing hysterically with my sister over nothing very much at all. Shared laughter, cotton candy, a star-studded night in summer. For me, it’s not a bucket list thing. But maybe it should be. I don’t think it gets much better!

Health minister for fresher food Albertans living in long-term care centres operated by Alberta Health Services will soon enjoy fresher food that better meets their dietary needs and preferences. Health Minister Fred Horne is directing Alberta Health Services (AHS) to discontinue the practice of preparing meals offsite and reheating, and bring back on-site food preparation services in the long-term care homes it operates. The changes will be in effect by December. “We’ve heard what residents and their families have said about the quality of food in our long-term care facilities and today, we are taking action to improve that,” said Horne. “We have to remember that these facilities are home to the people who live there, and in many cases, the last home they will ever live in. They deserve to live in comfort and dignity and enjoy food that is not only nutritious, but looks and tastes home-cooked and satisfies cultural food preferences.” AHS will be required to prepare meals within the residences that im-
prove the taste and appearance over the food currently served, while at the same time design meals that better reflect flexibility and choice for residents. Horne’s announcement was welcomed by the president of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees. “I want to congratulate Minister Horne for doing the right thing for Alberta’s seniors,” said Guy Smith. “Residents of these facilities deserve fresh, nutritious meals and we’re glad the minister acknowledges that.” In 2010 AHS began shutting down full-service kitchens in 73 small healthcare and seniors residences, mostly in small-town and rural Alberta. Freshly prepared food was replaced with heat and serve meals that were sometimes prepared out of province. AHS will consult with residents, families and staff to develop and present a plan of action to Horne by October, with full implementation of on-site and locally-based meal preparation by December.

Watch for marijuana grow ops With summer in full swing, the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team’s (ALERT) Green Teams are reminding residents to be on the lookout for rural and outdoor marihuana grow operations. ALERT Green Teams, integrated teams made up of Calgary Police Service, Edmonton Police Service and RCMP members, investigate and dismantle marihuana grow operations in rural and urban Alberta. Between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012, ALERT seized more than 57,000 marihuana plants, valued at nearly $69 million if sold at the street level. Marihuana grow operations present significant safety hazards in rural and urban Alberta. Often, ALERT’s Green Teams uncover electrical bypasses, which are commonly used to acquire the large amount of power needed for a grow operation and are extreme fire hazards. “We are asking rural Albertans to watch for grow ops this time of year,” said Green Team’s A/Sgt. Ray Savage, “While many people think grow ops are limited to cities, growers are drawn to rural areas where they feel their activity is more concealed and may go unnoticed. This is why it’s so important to be on the lookout.” Signs of a rural or outdoor marihuana grow operation include: • lime green vegetation concealed from roads or hidden within other crops; • residents who appear to be living in the area temporarily; • construction materials or the construction of temporary structures; • isolated greenhouse structures; • pumps, generators or other equipment not normally found in the bush; • new ATV trails, or ATVs accessing previously unused trails; and • suspicious activity at rural water sources. To report suspicious activity or a suspected marihuana grow operation in your community, contact police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS). For information on how to spot a marihuana grow operation, visit www.alert-ab.ca/growops

RCMP request farmers to keep cows locked up Rimbey RCMP had a steady week responding to numerous oilfield thefts, uttering threats to kill, assault, impaired driving and other criminal matters. Police follow lead in wire theft case RCMP in Rimbey has been inundated with copper wire thefts from oilfield lease sites throughout the detachment area. Clearwater County has been the hardest hit. The thieves have been targeting remote rural lease sites off the beaten path. In one case, RCMP in Rimbey attended the scene of a recent copper wire theft in the area west of Highway 22. After the officers did their best impression of “Columbo” they returned to Rimbey and compiled all the evidence and prepared a search warrant. Rimbey Mounties stretched their boundaries and executed a search warrant in the Caroline area where a residential property was thoroughly searched for stolen goods. The investigation into this matter continues. Police encourage everyone to call 911 immediately to report any suspicious people or vehicles seen in or around oil lease sites who don’t appear to belong there. Bluffton drunk has truck seized Another impaired driver was arrested. Under the new legislation this drunk driver lost his license until his matter is settled in court. The accused, a 67-year-old farmer, also lost his pickup, which was seized at the scene. In the last few weeks this Bluffton-area man has been stopped by Rimbey officers three times. In each case he had open liquor in the vehicle; this time he was drunk. In addition to all the tickets he had already received for open alcohol in a vehicle, now he has numerous criminal charges to deal with. Your local police are working hard to keep our roadways safe for everyone. If you are considering a night out on the town to kick up your heels, please plan ahead and make plans to get a ride from a sober friend or family member. I am sure they would rather give you a ride safely home than to follow the hearse with you in it to the cemetery. Motorcycle stolen from campsite Sometime on the weekend a green 2000 Kawasaki 250 motorcycle was stolen from a campsite at Medicine Lake. The bike has not
been located. Keep your cows locked up Stray animals have caused havoc on rural roads and even caused two collisions on Secondary Highway 766 where a herd of cows on the road did not make it back to the pasture alive. Please ensure your livestock are not on any roadway where they endanger motorists. Play safe Const. Luke Halvorson was seen in town wearing a hockey helmet while out walking his dog. I guess he was not taking any more chances after the recent hailstorm made his new home look like Swiss cheese. If you have any information on these or any other crimes, please call the Rimbey RCMP at (403) 843-2224 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, #8477 on Telus Mobility or *8477 on Rogers AT&T. Crime Stoppers is a community program that does work. Do your part and call now.

Black powder shoot offers lots of fun and excitement By Treena Mielke The Blindman Valley Rod and Gun Club’s first black powder shoot was a bang-up affair that attracted more than 30 participants. Held at the gun range about four and a half miles south of town July 22, the event provided fun and excitement for black powder enthusiasts ranging in age from four to close to 80. Neil Handford, secretary-treasurer of the gun club, said the shoot gave
participants a chance to experience the thrill of using black powder as a form of ammunition. He said people with all levels of skill attended the shoot. “On hand were instructors and old hands with experience and a desire to teach some of the techniques of black powder to an enthusiastic group of shooters. The day gave participants a chance to try out their skill with a rifle, and some excellent shoots were fired, said Handford. “The air was filled with the pungent smell of powder and there were grins on every face. From hearing the gong of a well placed shot, to the splitting of a playing card and even Jesse Koenig and Ken putting out a candle recently. (with a well-placed shot), the day was nothing short of great, he said. Simulated buffalo, coyote and turkeys were the targets of choice. Participants also shot at popsicle sticks and playing cards placed on edge. “For the test of distance shooting we had bal-

Stout were among the participants at the black powder shoot held Photo submitted loons at the hundred and some of those met their demise as well. A fun part of the shoot also included throwing the tomahawk and Bowie knife. “When we looked out back we had a girl showing us how to throw the tomahawk and Bowie knife and she meant business hitting the target often, so some of the guys gave it a try and did quite well, too. Handford, who is a fan of black powder shooting, said the technique goes back to fur trading days. He explained that this type of ammunition was used before the introduction of modern smokeless powders where all components are loaded together into a cartridge and then inserted into a firearm. Black powder shoot entertaining Continued from Page 8 “It’s simple, but it’s still challenging. It requires good eyesight and skill.” Harold Fisher, who lives in Prince Albert, Sask, but often comes to the Rimbey area, also enjoys using a black powder rifle when hunting big game. For Fisher, one of the biggest challenges in using the primitive ammunition is the time it takes to re-load. “When you are using black powder all the components have to be loaded into the firearm separately, usually allowing for only one shot. These firearms are not designed for long range shooting as is the case with modern high-powered rifles, so the challenge is getting as close as possible to your game and making the first shot count.” Both Fisher and Handford said these challenges add excitement and fun to the sport. The black powder shoot may become an annual event for the Blindman Valley Rod and Gun Club.
Jim Goddard, who has several years experience using black powder as a form of ammunition, was one of the participants of the black powder shoot held recently. Photo submitted

Movie night provides cheap entertainment By Treena Mielke Anyone who has five bucks burning a hole in their pocket may want to check out the latest movie night in Rimbey. For $5, moviegoers can watch a pre-released movie, not yet out on video, at the community centre. Recreation director Rick Kreklewich said movie night in Rimbey began in June with the showing of Mission Impossible 4. In July, the movie Dark Shadows was shown. He said the idea has caught on slowly with 28 people attending the July movie. On Aug. 15, the movie, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, staring Jennifer Lopez, Chris Rock, Mathew Morrison, Cameron Diaz and J. Todd Smith will be shown. The lighthearted comedy looks at love through
the eyes of five interconnected couples experiencing the thrills and surprises of having a baby, and finally realizing the universal truth that life is what happens when you make other plans. Kreklewich encourages the public to take advantage of the movie night, noting the only costs involved are for pop and popcorn. “It’s a very inexpensive night out, he said. The movie night is made possible through the town’s recreation department and also due to the generosity of Rimbey TV who donated a projector and lent out a Blue Ray player. The Rimbey Library shows movies every Thursday night throughout the summer and on the first Thursday of every month during the rest of the year. Movies at the library are free, but there is a $2 fee for pop and popcorn.

By Treena Mielke Two country music greats will get together this summer to provide their audience with a delightful mix of stories and songs. Country star and Bentley native Dick Damron, and Grand Ol Opry star George Hamilton IV will be at the Bentley Ag Centre Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. Damron, who has returned from Mexico to spend his summer at his home near Bentley, said he and Hamilton have a history together. “We go back quite a ways.” He recalled a time in 1979 when he was touring in Europe and the theatre where he was to perform burned down the night before his performance. “When we received that news, we made plans to take in the George Hamilton IV concert in Oxford. George, being the gentleman that he is, left passes at the box office and provided Gordon Davies (my tour manager) and me with the best seats in the house.” Chuckling, Damron recalled that George introduced him to the audience and then performed Countryfied, telling the audience that Dick had written the song for him and that his current tour was so hot the venues were burning down before he could play them. A song performed by Hamilton that night, attributed to Scottish singer Moira Anderson, sparked an idea for Damron that later evolved into the song “If London Were a Lady.” He recalled writing the words to the song, which he says is one of the prettiest songs he would ever write. “A couple of days after George’s concert, I was in London waiting for a few hours to fly to Chicago and on to Nashville to record. I had been walking along an almost-deserted street. It was foggy and a drizzling rain had me soaked and chilled to the bone. A few doors down, I discovered a small pub. I entered, ordered a cup of coffee and removed my rainsoaked jacket. By the time the waiter returned with my coffee, I had taken a paper napkin from the dispenser and began to write.” Since his first record release of Gonna Have a Party in 1958, his first chart record, ‘That’s What I Call Living: in 1961 and his first number 1 recording of “Hitch Hikin’” on RCA in 1964, Dick Damron has written more than 500 songs and recorded more than 30 CDs, cassettes and vinyl albums. The International Country Music Hall of Famer, has performed in thousands of venues around the world and won almost every country music award in Canada. He is the recipient of five Texas Awards and was twice named Foreign Artist of the Year in Europe. His autobiography, The Legend and The Legacy, was published in 1998. He has also written the novels Rock A Bye Baby Blues and Pacific Coast Radio. He is working on a book entitled The Last Days Of a Crazy Old Man in Mexico. Damron, who has experienced health issues in the last few years, said he is surprised his creativity remains strong. “I am amazed the creativity still lives inside of me,” he said. “But, now when I’m out of gas; I’m out of gas.” As much as Damron has become a legend in his own right in the country music world, he

After seven gruelling hours on horseback, a 16-year-old Winfield teen and her two teammates from Ontario successfully crossed the finish line of the 75 Mile FEI Endurance Championship, winning a gold medal. Jessica Yavis from Winfield, Lee Hutten of Ottawa and Emma Webb of Flesherton, Ont., all members of the Canadian Junior Endurance Team were the sole team to finish the race held July 20 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. Yavis, a Grade 12 student at Buck Lake, who lives on a horse ranch near Winfield, said the competition was an awesome experience and she is proud of the team’s gold medal win. About half way through the race, the teen could have earned a gold medal all on her own, as she was tied for first, however, her horse Jahlad stumbled and skinned his right knee. At that time, Yavis chose to give up her placing and drop back to fifth place. Later, she realized her teammates were only a few minutes behind her so she slowed down even more so she could ride with them. Her team spirit proved timely and in the end Team Canada crossed the finish line together. The endurance race began at 6:30 a.m. and the Canadian team came in at 4:10 p.m. with their hands raised in a victory salute. “It was amazing, but the tension wasn’t over yet. We had to see a vet and pass an inspection.” Continued on Page 15

Winfield endurance rider on gold winning team Continued from Page 12 Webb, 18, who rode to the finish line on her trusty mount, Serloki, competed in her first distance event when she was four and has been on team Ontario since she was 13, and joined team Canada last year. She said winning the gold for Canada was an awesome feeling. “When we were coming down the home stretch I felt a triumphant sense of accomplishment that Team Canada had made it across the finish line and I was a part of it. Later when we found out that it was the first gold FEI medal for Canada in endurance I was very proud to be part of the team.’’ Webb said the weather throughout the race was unpredictable. “It went from killer hot, to storms, to cloudy, so we didn’t know what we would get. The rain we had earlier in the week made the footing slippery at some points which makes you nervous about going fast
Bluffton farmer wins at Stampede By Treena Mielke A Bluffton-area farmer is $3,500 richer after his shorthorn steer won the Calgary Stampede’s Quality Beef Competition. The steer owned by Ryan Gilchrist was one of 76 carcasses were entered in this year’s quality beef competition held July 16 at Cargill Foods in High River. “I found out I won last Thursday,” said Gilchrist who farms a cow/calf operation with his parents on the Medicine Lake Road. Gilchrist’s steer was judged with AAA 90 marbling, a rib eye of 90 square centimetres, a Sterling Silver score of 82 and a carcass weight of 743.2 pounds. Optimal points are scored at the Stampede’s Quality Beef Competition for a rib eye that measures between 86 and 95 square centimetres; AAA marbling; two to four millimetres of back fat; fine-grain meat texture; and a carcass weight of 700 to 800 pounds. The Stampede’s Quality Beef Competition features entries from the annual UFA Steer Classic and is held annually as a way of identifying carcasses of superior quality. Gilchrist was somewhat surprised to win, although he was quite confident he “had a good shot at it.” Gilchrist has been taking cattle to the Calgary Stampede since 2001 and won reserve champion in 2008. He said attending the Calgary Stampede is a mini vacation for him. He also attends other cattle shows and goes to Denver, Colo. for a cattle show and sale every other year.

since you don’t want your horse to fall.” Lee Hutten experienced a few tense moments before the race began as vets were concerned about her horse, Parker’s gait. However, the vets gave horse and rider the green light to proceed and when the competitors assembled at the starting gate, the horse and rider was there. However, Hutten struggled to keep Parker at a slower pace all day to ensure he remained healthy and strong throughout the competition. Throughout the race, horses were ex-
amined by veterinary staff four times and each horse and rider was required to take a rest period. Hutten and Parker placed fifth overall, Webb and Serloki placed sixth, and Yavis and Jahlad placed seventh. The total combined team time was 21 hours. The race is over and the young riders are proud gold medal winners, but competitions will continue. Hutten, who is 20, will no longer qualify for Canada as a young rider, however
she could compete on the international endurance stage as an adult. Webb plans to spend next year focusing on endurance racing and will compete in a 75-mile FEI two-star race on Aug. 4 in new Lowell, Ont. Yavis plans to compete next weekend at Brule in a provincial 50-mile race. Both Yavis and Webb plan to compete in the World Endurance Young Riders Championships in France next year.

For a comparatively small club the Blindman Valley 4-H Beef Club (Bentley) does very well. This year their achievement day show and sale, part of the Lacombe and district area show, once again took place at the Central Alberta Agricultural Society grounds in Lacombe. Their 15 members had 12 show steers, six heifers, and three carcass projects. Continued good support from bidders and buyers saw the 66 calves sold at the show average $2.35 per pound. At the female show the Club Champion Heifer belonged to Kevin Wilson, and Reserve Club Champion Heifer to Hayley Bickford. Blake Vert took first for Junior Club Heifer Showmanship and J’lyn Bickford rook second. In Intermediate Club Heifer Showmanship, Breanne Bickford was the only intermediate to show a heifer. The Senior Club Heifer Showmanship winner was won Kevin Wilson with Falon Vert second. At the Steer Show and Sale Blake Vert had the Club Champion, Falon Vert had Reserve Club Champion, and Kevin Wilson’s steer won Club Best Rate of Gain. Quinn Millar won Jr. Club Steer Showmanship with Gracie Whitfield second. Int. Club Steer Show-
manship was won by Harley Whitfield with Thomas Mueller second. Sr. Club Steer Showmanship winner was Falon Vert with Kevin Wilson second. Members had fun decorating their space in the barn around the theme “Redneck.” Club member Harley Whitfield was on the Reserve Champion Team Grooming Team at an interclub Team Grooming Day on April 29 at the Lacombe Grounds held between the four clubs East Lacombe, Central, Nebraska and Blindman Valley. In the Live Judging Competition the Blindman Club members placed second overall. Club winners: seniors first, Kevin Wilson and second Char-Lee Ruud; intermediate first was Thomas Mueller and second Billie Ruud; and in juniors, first went to Quinn Millar with second to Gracie Whitfield. The club wrapped up their year with an awards night. Senior record book winner was Peter Mueller, Intermediate record book winner was Thomas Mueller, and the junior book winner was Gracie Whitfield. Members and their families and helpers are now getting organized to serve a pancake breakfast for the Bentley Fair and Rodeo the morning of Aug. 9 and look forward to feeding a hungry crowd.
Become a literacy gold medalist The London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games offer an excellent opportunity for parents and children to cheer on their favourite athletes while practicing literacy skills. 1. Find out where the Olympic flame has travelled by looking at a map. You can practice your numeracy skills by calculating the distance travelled. A detailed map can be found at: http://www.london2012.com/ torch-relay/route/ 2. Write a note of congratulations and send it to your favourite Canadian athlete. 3. Keep track of the number of gold, silver and bronze medals won by Canadian athletes. Use cool stickers to mark your tally. 4. Find out more about London, England. Read up on famous Brits like Shakespeare and Henry VIII.
5. Research the sports being played. Identify one that you are least familiar with and read up on its rules. 6. Sing the Canadian national anthem in English and French to cheer on the teams. 7. Research information about your favourite athlete. Find out where they grew up, how they train, what their favourite food is, etc. 8. Look up Olympic-inspired trivia. (Did you know Clara Hughes is the only Canadian athlete to win a medal at both the summer and winter Olympic Games?) 9. Learn the history of the Olympic Games, such as its origins and past and future host cities. Locate those host cities on a map. 10. During timed events, calculate the difference between the top athletes’ performances to improve your numeracy skills.

May 23, 1913 - May 23, 2012 With sadness the family announces the passing of Sam Hansen, who left us peacefully in the early morning hours of his 99th birthday. Just as he said he would, seemingly in control right to the end, even skipping out on his birthday party. Sam was pre-deceased by his wife of 72 years Marion who left us March 2, 2008. He is survived by his loving family, Leah (Robert) Cyr; daughter, Carmel (Ron) Graham; grand daughter, Susanne Douma; grand daughter, Myia and Brie great-grand daughters, and Keenan step great grandson. Sam left many nieces, nephews, and friends behind who are all saddened by his leave, each with their own memories of time they shared. He cared for them all and was a trusted friend. Sam was born May 23, 1913 to Charles and Katherine Hansen in Rimbey, Alberta, the youngest of seven children. He was named after Sam Rimbey, who when seeing the newborn boy suggested that if they wanted him to amount to anything they should name him Sam. At age 16 Sam went to Edmonton to work in the glass business with his brother in-law Bob Livingstone, and at age 21 began Crystal Glass in Calgary, the same year he and Marion married 1935. Sam built a vibrant business which he sold to Speedy Auto Glass. Upon retirement in 1972, Sam and Marion moved to Sidney where Sam became an avid sports fisherman and gardener amongst other varied interests. Soon there were grand daughters and he became “Papa Sam”. Sam lived a long and healthy life almost right to the end, and for this we are so grateful. Sam was a Titan on Earth with his amazing longevity and strength but what we all miss now is the twinkle in his eye, his broad shoulders, his kindness and wisdom. Our love goes with you forever “Papa Sam”. Now you are now a Legend in your family. We thank also all those friends and relations that visited Sam the week of his birthday and gave kind support to the family at this difficult time. Bill and Kelly Hansen of Rimbey were among those who made the trip to see Sam. Sam’s remains will be scattered together with those of Marion at their home, in a garden bearing a Flowering Dogwood Tree and Roses in their memory. Since Sam’s passing his lovely niece Doris Dersch of Bluffton, has also left us and we wish to extend our deepest sympathy to her family, loved ones and friends.
