City pulls the plug on Area D sewage agreement The City of Campbell River has withdrawn its offer to provide sewer services to Area D of the Strathcona Regional District. “We sent a proposal to Area D last September to see if we could develop an agreement that would be beneficial to both the city and Area D,” said city councillor Mary Storry, who holds the council portfolio for utilities and public works. “We appreciate the amount of effort that has gone into trying to negotiate a mutually beneficial arrangement, and since we’ve been unable to finalize an agreement that would recover all city costs, council has determined that it’s in the best interest of Campbell River taxpayers to withdraw our offer to provide sewer services for Area D.” The announcement was made by the city Tuesday morning as the Mirror was going to press. Long-time Area D regional director Brenda Leigh could not be reached for comment, chief administrative officer Brian Reardon was away on vacation and no one else at the regional district was

Think pink, as in salmon Dumping spawning gravel into the Campbell River isn’t exactly the most fun activity. But it does take time, money and people who care – people who deserve some good fun. And that’s the reason for the Pink Salmon Festival which took place Saturday at downtown’s Robert Ostler Park on the foreshore. This family-themed event to support the Pacific Salmon Foundation featured a salmon barbecue cooked up by volunteers from the Campbell River Kinsmen Club, a pink bicycle parade for the kids, fly tying, free pink balloons and more. In addition to supporting projects such as supplementing spawning gravel, the Pacific Salmon Foundation works to restore and enhance salmon bearing rivers and streams, and to raise public awareness about the importance of salmon in maintaining the ecology of British Columbia while helping the economy through fishing activities.
It’s good to see guys in the kitchen as the Kinsmen prepared more than 300 sides of fresh pink salmon.

Dam torn down while pipeline’s dug up Work is well-underway to dismantle the Heber River Dam and pipeline. The former hydroelectric generating facility, located approximately 15 kilometres northwest of Gold River, is 53 years old and was in poor condition. The facility operated for 48 years, but has been out of service since November 2006. It was built to divert water from the Heber River into the Campbell River power generating system. The structure is presently being dismantled and will be returned, as much as possible, to its natural state. “During the Monday site tour there was a lot of activity as the main part of the project kicked in with the removal of the dam
structure,” said BC Hydro spokesman Stephen Watson. “Eight excavators and three loading trucks were operating, as well as about seven trucks going back and forth to Campbell River.” The trucks hauled waste soils and timbers to the former Catalyst mill site. The materials will then be barged to Vancouver for proper disposal. Quantum Murray is the general contractor and employs 25-30 people on the project. The contractor has done very well with local employment, with about a third of the workforce being from the MowachahtMuchalaht First Nation of Gold River. The project is moving towards the Drum Lake and Crest Crags

area where the pipeline
outlet is located. About a kilometre of pipeline is within Strathcona Provincial Park. Fo r ab o u t t h re e weeks in September there will be limited access to the Crest Crags hiking and rock climbing area. Notices will be provided at the
site and communicated in advance to BC Parks and various users, such as Strathcona Park Lodge. The construction site has narrow roads and tight areas to work within so worker and public safety is of highest priority.
“Please do not enter the area,” said Watson. “There is also night security. The purpose of these updates is to let people know what’s happening without going to the site to look.” The project is on budget and on track to be
finished by October. There will be some plantings next season as well as several years of monitoring to make sure the site goes back to a natural state. The removal of the dam will benefit fish and wildlife movement should improve.

Nothing’s in stone yet regarding memorials KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
For the second time in two months, council put off making a decision on the memorial landmarks program. The city says the Le gacy Landmarks program, which allows residents to purchase and install park benches and picnic tables in memory of a loved one, requires changes. Ross Milnthorp, the city’s general manager of parks, recreation, and culture, said one of the biggest problems is the city is running out of space to accommodate the memorials. There is currently a waiting list of 59 peo-
ple wanting to buy a landmark item. Mayor Walter Jakeway can’t understand why city staff would tell people they’re waiting because there’s no room to put their memorial. “It’s hard to tell people that we don’t have more places to put benches or picnic tables, Jakeway says. “I’m sure if I went out for a drive I could find lots of places. And to have people waiting who want a bench or picnic table. The city’s solution is to maintain the landmark items for roughly 25 years, and then make the space available to a new leasee. Coun. Larry Samson
said that should be discussed away from council chambers. He recommended council refer the item to the city’s new Community Partnership Committee, expected to sit in September, where costs, the lifetime of the items, and location could be more thoroughly discussed. “This one is near and dear to our family’s heart as we have a table in memory of my sister, Samson said. “For the program all of a sudden, after 15 years, to stop would be devastating to my family. It would be devastating to my sister’s two children who are now young adults. Council also received
a letter from one resident who is concerned a bench purchased by her family, and enjoyed by many walking along the beach, may be taken away. “To us, this is Jerry’s tombstone and at the time we purchased it, we were led to believe that it would always be there, Corinne Mergaert wrote in an e-mail. “Please think long and hard before you make such an insensitive decision. I can assure you our family is not alone in our feelings concerning this matter. Jakeway said with a little creativity, people should be accommodated. “I think we need to be

more imaginative and get on with it, he said. “For a lot of people it’s a sense of closure. I think we need to get out there and find a place. Councillors Andy Adams and Ron Kerr agreed they would both like to see alternatives
to the benches and tables. Kerr suggested memory plaques in Spirit Square that, through purchasing fees, could help fund programming. The city would also like to address rising program costs and recommended raising the
price of a park bench to $2,500 and to $3,000 for a picnic table, with city subsidies of $769 and $1,373 respectively. The price now for a park bench is $1,800, while the city subsidizes $1,329. A picnic table costs the donor $2,000.
Virus found again at fish farm Last Friday the IHN virus was detected after routine monitoring at one of Mainstream Canada’s Tofinoarea farms. “Unfortunately, our Millar Channel farm has tested positive...for the IHN (Infectious Haematopoietic Necrosis) virus, said Fernando Villarroel, the company’s managing director. “We are waiting for results from confirmatory tests. Mainstream Canada has been monitoring its Clayoquot farm sites closely after the Dixon Bay farm experienced an IHN outbreak in May, and was completely emptied as a result. Millar Channel is 6.5 kilometres away from Dixon, the nearest farm
site. The fish at Millar Channel are small, approximately 400 grams on average. Following protocols of the Dixon outbreak, the farm was immediately isolated, and the company is following strict protocols to limit the spread of the virus. Canadian Food Inspection Agency has been notified and their investigation will follow. There is currently no increased fish mortality at the Millar farm and any further actions by the company will be in co-operation with Canadian authorities. Because of the length of time between the cases, it’s unlikely the virus at Millar Channel came from Dixon Bay farm.

Colourful language in official community plan irks councillors KRISTEN DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
A new clause that council felt could tie the hands of developers was actually meant to fast-track building projects, according to city staff. The issue first appeared in a paragraph on last week’s council agenda under an application to redevelop the former Coastline Mazda property in Willow Point. Orla Jensen was looking for council’s approval to redevelop his one- and two-storey dealership building into a mixed commercial, retail and office complex. But council got tripped up over a paragraph in city staff ’s recommendation, that
gives the general manager of operations the authority, “to approve colour, signage and exterior illumination schemes that are consistent with the spirit and intent of the relevant development permit guidelines of the Sustainable Official Community Plan.” Coun. Andy Adams wanted the paragraph removed. “I felt that the part of getting into approving colour and signage and exterior illumination schemes was going a little bit too far as to what our role is in approving major development permits,” he said. Adams was particularly concerned over a city staff report that said “the white colouring” Jensen was proposing to use on his building did not conform to the city guidelines. “I’m struggling as to what’s the problem,” Adams said. “This is

something new. We haven’t seen this on council before.” The paragraph came up again minutes later in Seymour Pacific’s development permit application for its new five-storey building slated for intersection at Alder and St. Ann’s streets. Ross Blackwell, the city’s land use manager, said after the meeting that the paragraph appeared on the agenda because not all the infor mation pertaining to colour, materials, and lighting had been received by the city. But Blackwell wanted to get the application in front of council so Jensen and Seymour Pacific could go ahead with their plans. The city received the information it needed the day after the council meeting in Jensen’s case and for, Seymour Pacific, the information was presented during a delegation at
the meeting. Blackwell said colour, materials, and lighting fall under development permit guidelines in the Sustainable Community Plan, which was approved by the community. In regard to colour, the plan states that because of the city’s West Coast climate, characterized by a cloudy winter season, a warm colour palette is encouraged over the use of cool colours. “These are guidelines,” Blackwell said. “We’re not saying they’re required. They’re encouraged in order to convey the look and feel of what the community wants to see. We’re saying we prefer you to use this palette because the community has told us this is what they want.” Coun. Ron Kerr supported keeping the colour clause in the development permit. “Traditionally in this
town we’ve set the bar very low architecturally,” he said. “I think this is a new opportunity, with the new (community plan) to maybe raise the standard a bit.” Coun. Ryan Mennie sided with Kerr, and said he didn’t “see it as a restriction” but as an “extra element towards collaboration.” Mayor Walter Jakeway didn’t like the clause and said he hopes to not see it again on the council agenda. “I think it’s up to the architect to set the pattern,” he said. “It’s not up to the city to determine it. If we all wanted to be architects we should have taken architecture.” In the end, council voted 4-3 to approve Jensen’s development permit with the clause intact. Councillors Adams, Stor ry and Mayor Jakeway voted in opposition.

willing to speak on the record. Based on discussions going back to 2006, the city sent regional district a proposal last September to provide liquid waste treatment as part of a draft master service agreement. The agreement also covered transit and water supply, and proposed service costs were comparable for city and Area D residents. Rather than accepting a master service agreement, the regional district requested a separate agreement for each service. Council wanted to negotiate a fair and equitable contribution from the regional district to provide sewer services to residents of Area D closest to the southern boundary of Campbell River. “The proposed rates for sewer services took into account that people living in Area D do not pay development cost charges to the city,” said Storry. Development cost charges are a one-time levy to fund infrastructure upgrades related to new growth. These charges ensure that new development contributes to infrastructure costs, rather than relying on existing property owners to subsidize growth. “For the city to provide sewer service to Area D, upgrades to the c ity’s existing sewer system would be required, and it is the city’s view that these costs should be recovered,” said Storry. She added that council also agreed it would be inappropriate to subsidize development outside the city. “With the loss of the industrial tax base and related property tax increases for residents, we are reviewing all existing and potential service agreements,” she said.

In the days and weeks leading up to last Friday’s opening ceremonies for the 2012 Summer Games in London, the international media were gleefully chronicling the myriad gaffes and shortcomings that have organizers scrambling and issuing statements of reassurance that all will be well. First it was the weather, cold and rainy then suddenly so hot power lines for a new rail service to the Olympic stadium were melting, resulting in delays and shutdowns. Ah yes, transportation, the eternal Achilles heel of every modern Olympics; if it’s not cabbies protesting
on the Tower Bridge, it’s everyday commuters fretting through gridlock to allow Olympic officials free passage along exclusive traffic lanes. There are worries about security, as the private company contracted to make the Games safe underestimated the magnitude of the job, necessitating the deployment of the military. Customs agents are threatening to strike. And nobody is sure how much it will all cost in the end. Sound familiar? Two years ago we were sweating many of those very same issues in the days preceding Vancouver’s Winter Olympics.
And no one was more vocal in their criticism than the British media; one paper even girded their readers for “the worst Games ever.” But all of the problems were forgotten as soon as Wayne Gretzky lit the Olympic cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza. Just as they likely were when the torch was set ablaze in London. And we’ll all settle in for two weeks of dazzling athletic competition, compelling human interest stories and national pride. We’ll cheer everyone in red and white, but especially for our local heroes.

That’s just disgusting I am in a certain Big Box grocery store almost daily. I have to comment on the public washrooms. To say that they are disgusting is an understatement. I cannot tell you the number of times that I have gone into this bathroom, just to turn around and walk out. I wouldn’t send a farm animal into those kinds of conditions. The bathrooms are not checked and maintained on a regular basis. Numerous times I have experienced feces on the walls and toilets, urine on the floors, and bloody tampons in the dispenser beside the toilet for hours! There is always a shortage of toilet paper, soap, hand sanitizer and paper towels and overflowing garbage bins. I don’t know if this is due to understaffing, or if the staff responsible for this is just not doing their job. I feel that it is a terrible reflection on your store. This is a major health and safety hazard for your valued customers. I think that we deserve a little better than this. Continued on Page 9
We welcome your opinions on stories and issues published in our pages as well as issues of broader concern encountered elsewhere. Please keep your letters brief. We reserve the right to edit for length and liability. E-mail them to editor@ campbellrivermirror.com

Could spaghetti be gourmet? Well, it could be pretty close to gourmet if you take a fresh bowl of steaming pasta, a ladle of tomato sauce and top it off with a dollop of pesto. Definitely, the addition of pesto would upgrade your repast from good to outstanding. Basil, the main ingredient in pesto that has such an impact on sauces and salads, is not easy to grow. But, there is a way around that impasse. My solution is to buy a mature basil plant in the grocery store, find a spot in your kitchen with at least partial sun and your basil will produce a regular supply of deliciously pungent leaves for months on end. The trick to keeping your basil reproducing is to regularly nip off the upper leaves. This means there
will only be one or two sets of leaves left on each branch. It is astounding to see how quickly the plant regrows. Now try mixing basil, pine nuts, a garlic clove, olive oil and Parmesan cheese in the blender. Freeze the pesto in an ice cube tray and then transfer the squares into a freezer bag. Use these as a topping, not only on pasta but on baked fish or grilled chicken. For those not partial to basil you can always replace the herb with cilantro or parsley and still have a great dish. Sowing a winter harvest garden in August while the summer sun is still producing abundant food may seem a bit strange, but it captures the essence of sustainable gardening.
The 12 vegetable varieties that are suggested are cold-hardy and will grow slowly, or sit dormant, while awaiting the harvest. Some of those on this basic list will benefit from the protection of a cold frame, a cloche or mulch, but all of them can be enjoyed well into December and sometimes into the following spring. On this list are arugula, cilantro, corn salad, lettuce, parsnips, brussel sprouts, carrots, collards, kale and turnips. Read the directions on the back of the packages to assure your selection is a winter seed. You can create a very inexpensive cold frame by buying a large class window frame at the Habitat For Humanity Restore on Willow Street. Prop the frame on an angle against a south facing supporting wall. This
would work for a yard, a patio or a balcony garden. Just tuck your plants in under the cover, water when necessary and make sure they are mulched well with leaves or straw to protect them from cold days. You could be munching on your own greens all winter long. Did You Know That…seaweed, which is abundant on our shoreline, makes a fabulous liquid fertilizer. Half fill a drum or garbage container with seaweed, top it up with water and let stand for three months. The beautiful rich liquid is very strong. You must dilute it in a solution of one cup of seaweed to four gallons of water. Your plants will love you and so will the earthworms.

ICBC scammer offers up a public apology To members of the community, My name is Jason, recently I made a bad decision, and lied to ICBC. I lent my vehicle to an unlicensed driver, for a short drive to the repair shop. Along the way an accident occurred. Because the driver was unlicensed, and the accident was a minor, I asked a friend who is a licensed driver, to falsely report she was driving. Lying to ICBC was a bad decision. I am hoping that
this letter, will prevent someone else in this situation, from making the same mistake. I wrongfully involved my friend, the ICBC claims representative, and the ICBC Investigator, in a situation that should never have happened. I feel terrible about this false claim, the time ICBC had to put into it, the effect on my friends, and the stress I caused myself. I teach my children to be honest, and I regret the dishonesty I demon-
strated. Hours of valuable time was spent by ICBC, investigating, before I decided to tell the truth. The Investigator drove twice to Campbell River, from Naniamo to meet with us during this time. I am sure there are much better ways to utilize his time. I knew it was wrong, I felt awful and edgy all the time. As well, the driver and my friend lost sleep, and felt sick for misleading ICBC. In the end, this minor
accident could have been resolved simply, by just telling the truth immediately, and not wasting everyone=s time. The outcome would have been similar, in a much simpler way. I was lucky to have only damages to pay for, instead of additional criminal charges as well. My friends and I went through the Restorative Justice Program, and are working to make this situation right. They

are volunteering in the community, and I am making this public apology. I would never take this route again, I strongly recommend to others, to tell the truth and to consider the consequences of telling a lie before you do it.

Disgusting: Washrooms need cleaning Continued from Page 8
Instead of spending thousands on rearranging your store, you should invest some money into your public washrooms. A coat of paint every few months will not suffice. In saying this, I do understand that it is the deranged few that
mistreat this washroom, and it is not your staff ’s fault that some are sick enough to deface the walls with feces. It still needs to be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. To the people who are responsible for the misuse of the bathrooms, yo u s h o u l d b e
ashamed of yourselves. I would use the old quote my father used to ask: Were you raised in a barn? Do you smear feces o n yo u r w a l l s at home? Do you urinate on your floors? I will never understand what could possibly be going through a person’s head when they
are smearing the walls with their own feces. Call me crazy, but I just don’t understand. These public washrooms are a courtesy to you and thousands of other people. Children and the elderly use these bathrooms. If you are incapable of something as simple as using a public wash-

room properly, then you shouldn’t be out in public unsupervised. If defacing washrooms with bodily fluids is something you like to do, please do us all a favour and keep it to the confines of your own home where we don?t have to deal with it. Brittney Forsythe

Heroes & Zeros HEROES: Gold medals to our amazing local heroes, Karen Boyd and Marsha, who care for the feral cat population under the auspices of Pawprints Animal Rescue. They came to my home, took our three beautiful feral cats to the vet for neutering/ spaying and returned them to our property – at no cost to us - so they could continue to be fed and enjoyed by our family. These caring ladies have been rescuing feral cats in our community for some time, and have been instrumental in keeping the cat population under control while caring for their well-being. You may have noticed that the feral cat population on the foreshore has not continued to multiply and that they are healthy animals. If you are interested in contributing to this legal charity that issues tax receipts, contact pamela@ pawprintsanimalrescue. org or 604-989-7297. Julie Johnson ZERO: A big zero to the guy who left Fry Lake sandpit on July 17, drunk with his girlfriend and hit a 2,000 pound cement block, did damage to the bridge, then hid a cider in the bush, and told us he missed a deer. If there is a boss who has a damaged gray work truck with a fuel tank in the back and damage to the passenger’s side, we
know the truth and have pictures of the damage on the road, my e-mail is djmuir069@gmail.com Jennifer Muir HEROES: Many thanks to the Driftwood (Divas) Club/ Cottage Artists for their on-going, caring dedication and support at the Sybil Andres Cottage. Heroes in the garden, especially to CR Garden Club member Malcolm Wilson who kindly put up the nice red tents to help celebrate Canada Day
at the cottage. The tents brought a lot of attention to our annual show and sale during the Shoreline Arts Carving Competition. To the heroes at Seaside Painters Group who adorned the walls inside the cottage and helped sell our cards, bookmarks & notebooks, many thanks. Thanks to the Arts Council which has championed our causes. So, to everyone who has helped over the years to accomplish what the Sybil Andrews Heritage Society set out to do, to save and help restore the cottage, we did it and you are the real heroes! Now we can enjoy a very fine place to meet and work for Art and otherwise. Mary Teer, president,
Sybil Andrews Heritage Society HEROES: Many thanks to the heroes at the city for installing concrete barrier and speed bumps at the bottom of the Galerno Road hill. They are heroes for preventing a most certain future accident. Having lived at the bottom of this hill for nine years, we have been worried about the vehicle traffic which, at times, appears to be 80 km/h or more from motorists who fail to control their speed on this hill. Combine that with a residential neighbourhood which includes an inhome daycare centre, deer crossing, bicycles, skateboarders and pedestrians – this was an accident waiting to happen.

June Hazel Larsen It is with great sadness that we, the children of June Hazel Larsen, announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother. She left us way too soon on July 4th, 2012 at the age of 79. Mom was a very determined woman. After being widowed twice and left with nine children to raise, she put her hand to many jobs such as house cleaning, clam digging, cooking in restaurants and logging camps, and commercial fishing. She even tried her hand at running her own business (Little Bear Fishing Gear). Mom loved to play card and board games and entertained us with her desire to win. She loved to dance and socialize which made her many friends. Mom did things her own way whether it was renovating the house with a chainsaw, mowing the lawn in her daisy-may shorts, bra, and work boots, or overcoming her fear of flying by taking flying lessons. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren greatly benefited from her love of crafting, crocheting, and knitting. Left to mourn and miss her greatly are her children: David (Wendy) Turcott, Ellen (George) Mathieson, Jae Turcott, Stanley (Kristina) Turcott, Katherine Thicke, Gerald (Sandy) Dennhardt, Kris Dennhardt, Kellie-Rose (Morris) Gall, William Dennhardt, 20 grandchildren, and 16 great- grandchildren. The family has plans to gather next year to have a private Life Celebration for our mother. Life ... the soul’s sweet memory.

NEWS
| CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2012
Hey anglers and tubers, the flow on the river is finally going down Water flow along the Campbell River is slowly being reduced this week which should make for some good fishing conditions. Starting last Friday, BC Hydro began reducing the flow of water
from the John Hart Dam reservoir from 160 metres per cubic second to 120 metres per cubic second. Typically, the rate of flow during July is 70 metres per cubic second. However, a
higher-than-average snowpack in the mountains, combined with a cool and wet spring, filled reservoirs in the Campbell River water system. Hydro’s been releasing more water in
order to maintain optimal levels for power generation, but now that’s it’s finally getting warmer and dryer, the flow rates can be eased. For now until Aug. 6, BC Hydro will reduce
the flow from the dam by 75 per cent with the target of 40 metres per cubic second. This flow rate is expected to remain constant through to mid-September. “This will be ideal
for river recreation and the sports fishery, particularly for pink salmon, and a planned fish habitat gravel placement project,” said BC Hydro spokesman Stephen Watson. The gravel placement

Make the most of our great summer weather and get out on the water. The City’s Recreation & Culture Department is offering a variety of kayak lessons, estuary tours and stand up paddle boarding lessons in August. Stand up paddle boarding is increasingly popular. It’s easy to throw a board in your truck or on your car and head for the lake or the ocean to enjoy a paddle. Paddle boarding cn also be a great work out for core and legs. Wanna give it a try? The next lesson is on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 6 p.m. More advanced courses are also available. Or maybe you’d prefer to enjoy a tour of the Campbell River estuary by kayak. No previous paddling experience is necessary, and your guide, Ken Bueckert, will take you through the hidden waterways of the estuary for a lovely evening paddle. There’s even a session for ladies only on Aug. 15. Last set of kayak lessons for the summer starts with rescue skills on Aug. 7, followed by basic paddling skills the morning of Aug. 11, and more advanced skills in the afternoon. All these classes cost $60 per session. Equipment is supplied, so all you have to do is sign up! For more information, or to register, call 250923-7911.

Community-minded students believe in giving Local environmental projects are benefitting from the $1,000 in funds raised by youth during the 2012 Earth Week Film Festival. The City’s Youth Action Committee, consisting of 13 students in Grades 9-12, chose to allocate the money they raised during the annual event to three diverse local environ-
mental projects. The youths established a new environmental bursary by allocating $400 to School District 72 for presentation to a graduating student enrolled in post-secondary. The bursary will be available in 2013 for a student that has demonstrated community involvement and an
interest in environmental studies. “Bursaries provide the opportunity for a better future for students pursuing an academic career,” said Tulsa Massee, a recent high school graduate and Youth Action Committee member. A youth-driven community g arden at Robron Centre also

Tyees are Island champs KRISTEN DOUGLAS PHOTOS/THE MIRROR
The Campbell River Bantam Tyees are Vancouver Island baseball champions. The Tyees hosted the three-team Island play downs at Nunns Creek Park last weekend and finished with a perfect 4-and-0 record. Campbell River kicked off the playoffs with an 11-7 victory over Victoria and followed that up with an 11-2 win against the Nanaimo Pirates. Sunday morning the Tyees were back at it against Nanaimo and the bats came alive, lifting the Tyees to a 20-10 win. Campbell River sealed it in its final game against Victoria, and leaving no doubt it was the superior team, won 12-8. The Tyees claimed the only Island berth in the provincials, which start Wednesday in Kamloops. Pictured clockwise from top right: Campbell River Tyee Ian Silva slides into home plate during Sunday morning’s game against the Nanaimo Pirates. Cory Bukauskas slides into second base under the tag. Woolcock would be okay, but his car was totalled, ending his night. The main event belonged to Jeff Bird (#55), who held off a hard charging Stuart

Chef Stephanie Robinson, Riptide Marine Pub Salmon is a fish with a high fat content so it can withstand being grilled with less chance of drying out. It has many beneficial vitamins, minerals, proteins and omega 3 fatty acids so it makes for a healthy and delicious meal choice. To ensure perfect grilling on your home BBQ, pre-heat the grill to high and brush off any residue. With a sprayable oil or an oiled paper towel, grease the grill well and turn to a medium heat. Salmon is so versatile and can be enhanced by a huge variety of flavours. You can soak cedar planks and cook the salmon fillet on the plank on the grill for a very West Coast flavour, marinate a salmon steak in equal parts of soy sauce and maple syrup for 30 minutes before grilling or tinfoil pocket your favourite flavours with the salmon on the grill. However you choose to enjoy your salmon, take in the best of the coast and get grillin’! – Stephanie Robinson
