Trevor Pearson, a George Elliot Secondary student and motocross racer, is celebrating the middle of summer by heading back to physio therapy. The talented young Lake Country competitor is coming off a major injury from the spring and is keen to get back on his bike and restarts his quest to attend the biggest amateur race in North America next year. Pearson, 15, has been competing and practicing on a motorbike since he was 10, following in his family’s footsteps. He progressed quickly enough to seriously consider the Loretta Lynn Championships, the top amateur race in North America. Named after the original sponsor, country music legend Loretta Lynn, the race has grown to a series of area and regional races leading up to the main event. During spring break in Hawaii earlier this year, Pearson had the opportunity to compete in an area qualification race for the Loretta Lynn. Pearson is a sponsored member of TeamGreen, Kawasaki’s sponsored racing team. That team sponsorship allowed Pearson to borrow a bike from a Hawaii local and take part in the races. He earned a second place in one race that would have sent him to regionals. It was a huge step in the amateur race world. One week later, Pear-

Trevor Pearson son decided to try another Loretta Lynn area race, this time against faster riders, just over the US border in Washington State. “I wanted to see if I could compete at that area race. I heard there were a lot of fast kids at the race and I wanted to see if I would qualify against them,” explains Pearson. Day one of that weekend was a split for Pearson. The first race wasn’t great, but he came back

strike. After a large jump, the bike went one way, Pearson went the other.

He was falling head first until he put out his hand to cushion the fall.

FLYING THROUGH the air, Trevor Pearson seems to have the race course all to himself.

The result was a wrist that suffered a multiple centimeter dislocation off his growth plate and a pulverizing fracture. The Grade 10 student is grateful the break was on his left hand, not his writing hand for school.

Now that the casts are off he is using his love of piano to help rebuild coordination and strength in a hand with limited mobility and some numbness issues. “My left hand is smaller than my right hand now,” he said ruefully. “I have limited mobility in my wrist and can’t ride a bike again, yet.” Pearson is intent on getting back on his bike and going after a trip to the Loretta Lynn again. Physical therapy looks promising and his sponsors have stuck by him. There is tremendous interest in his budding riding career, with YouTube videos of his races having well over 25,000 views. “I am so excited to get back to riding my bike again. It won’t be long now.”

The Regional District of Central Okanagan and the owners of the Alaskan malemute Shadow have agreed to a consent order that saw the dog returned to its owners late Friday afternoon, July 27. To facilitate this, the consent order outlines a number of mutually acceptable conditions, in-

cluding a program of rehabilitation and reintegration training for the two-year-old dog to help acclimatize her back into her owners’ home. “The agreement marks a positive step for both parties in resolving what has been a very difficult case. victim, the dog owners, regional district dog control staff and other professionals in the community, said regional district board chairman Robert Hobson. Shadow’s owners, Lake County couple Jennifer and Peter Madsen, said in a statement: “We are grateful for the cooperation of the regional district in working to resolve this matter and getting Shadow back with us. We’re very happy that she is home and will begin professional training to help with her adjustment. Last week, more than 100 supporters of the Madsens gathered at the regional district headquarters in Kelowna and walked into a regional district board meeting to show their support for the dog to be released back to the custody of her owners.

The malemute had been impounded at the district’s dog control kennel for the past 15 months after a complaint was filed against the dog, a matter that is now be- W fore the courts. The court case is to determine which of two dogs bit a woman, causing severe injuries.

Visit your Lake Country Museum online to see new exhibit The Lake Country Museum has a new exhibit that it has posted its website, www.lakecountrymuseum.com, click on Collections and Exhibits and then Archives. It is also posted on the national museum website, www. museevirtuel-virtualmuseum.ca. The Japanese Canadian Pioneers of Lake Country, BC 18991939 is a 168-item collection of photography and video commentary showing this important piece of Lake Country history. The core themes of the exhibit are courage, perseverance and resilience. The historical documents tell the stories of these Japanese Canadian pioneers of the community until World War II. Many of the videos feature personal memories of the children and grandchildren of these early Lake Country residents. The museum has worked in partnership with the Japanese-Canadian community for more than a year to de-

velop this historic exhibition. Stories have been gleaned from descendants living in Lake Country, across Canada and the Western United States. “This is a significant project for the museum and for the community as a whole. The Japanese Canadians were some of the earliest settlers of Lake Country and the opportunity to present their history has been incredibly rewarding, says Dr. Duane Thomson, Museum president. The Virtual Museum of Canada has accumulated a large swath of community memories and artifacts from across the country. The Japanese Canadian Pioneers of Lake Country, BC 1899-1939 exhibit is in the company of 405 exhibitions looking at the history of Canadian communities. Reach Out opens a second location BOBBI-SUE MENARD Reach Out Youth Counselling and Family Services has continued with its in-school programing for people ages 13 to 25 and their families for the summer in Lake Country. The charity has run an in-school program at George Elliott Secondary School (GESS) since 2005. With a steady demand for its services, Reach Out has extended to a secondary location and hopes to continue service in the fall. “We realized that Lake Country and West

Kelowna did not have free or affordable counselling options for youth and families, said Sharon Marshall, executive director of Reach Out. “With the school year closing we wanted to provide integrated services in both communities. Reach Out has a full intake process that can be accessed by visiting the website, www.reachoutyouthcounselling. com and calling the Kelowna office. All counselling meetings would take place in the integrated services building across from GESS.

“People who might need our services can get in touch with us. We have professional counsellors and clinical counsellors, explains Marshall. The service focuses on bringing youth through the thicket of emotional and social problems that can arise during challenging times. “We are looking at family and school related issues, said Marshall. “We move people though the program, we are geared to kids dealing with school, friends, low self esteem, all of those situations that can arise

for young people. The organization does refer out to specialists for clients who may have mental health concerns. Reach Out will be continuing their in school programming this fall when school starts again. Due to demand they are expecting to be open one day per week in the community once school opens again. “If there is greater need and we can find funding as a charity, we could offer more, said Marshall. Music in the orchard Get ready for some wild fiddle and wacky attitudes when Cod Gone Wild plays at Gatzke Orchards in Lake Country this Sunday. It’s going to be a festival of rhythms and roots when Cod Gone Wild roll into Oyama on Aug. 5 for an afternoon of Celtic bounce. While the orhcard’s bounty is sold at the front of the orchard, the area behind the market provides an opportunity for guests to experience live music amidst the agricultural and natural paradise located in the vibrant community of Oyama, the Jewel of

the Okanagan. Cod Gone Wild is a modern world Celtic band, based in the Okanagan Valley. The Cods have melded veteran musicians from diverse musical backgrounds such as folk, rock, jazz and funk, to create a modern Celtic sound with driving rhythms and tight vocal harmonies. ▼ MP’S REPORT

Feds stick to economic plan yielding positive results

I

t is a positive reflection of our economic stability and business sector confidence that Canada has been able to recover more than 765,000 net new jobs (90 per cent full-time and nearly 80 per cent private sector) since July 2009. Yet, a few local letter writers continue to denounce the government’s efforts to support job creation, taking aim at the government’s economic action plan and improvements to the EI and Temporary Foreign Worker programs, even going so far as to suggest that these measures are undermining good, well-paying jobs in this country. However, the evidence is to the contrary. As of April 2012, the average weekly wage is up at $896.63. And just this month, CIBC World Markets Economics released its Canadian Employment Quality Index report declaring “the good news is that the Canadian econ-

Ron Cannan omy created 155,000 new jobs in the first six months of 2012. The even better news is that these jobs were of high quality.” The report also noted that full-time jobs grew 10 times faster than parttime jobs, accounting for 97 per cent of all jobs created during the period—with strong growth for “full-time paid employees in high-paying sectors” like petroleum and coal manufacturing, oil and gas extraction, heavy and civil engineering construction and transportation equipment manufacturing. These results run

counter to those who continue to suggest that the government’s economic and job creation plan is not working. In fact, Canadians can take some pride in what we have achieved: The government’s efforts to create a stable economy and a strong job creation plan are the direct result of ongoing consultation with local businesses and Chambers of Commerce, the backbone of our local economies. By working with the business sector and listening to their concerns, the federal government has been able to put in place an economic plan that gives employers the confidence to keep hiring. Through consultation, the federal government has also been alerted to ongoing challenges that need to be addressed. Recently the president of the Hotel Association of Canada put out an SOS stating that the lodging industry is facing a severe labour shortage.

As I have heard locally we can relate to this challenge all too well. Without the necessary workforce to fill the jobs, key sectors like our tourism and agriculture sectors face a real threat to their productivity and viability. That is why the federal government has taken a number of measures to help. The federal government has made improvements to the EI program to better match skills with available employment, helping both those looking for work and those who need to fill job vacancies. We have also made improvements to our Temporary Foreign Worker program and the new Accelerated Labour Market Opinion to ensure these programs are more responsive to the needs of employers, a measure which has been commended by the Hotel Association of Canada. Skilled labour short-

ages are also the reason the government is focusing on youth employment and skills, including aboriginal youth, one of the fastest growing populations in Canada. Canada has much to be proud of when it comes to our efforts for youth employment; in fact, we rank second only to Germany in our successes. But we also recognize that more work must be done to address the challenges that our youth often face when transitioning from school to work —and ensuring that their talent is cultivated most effectively. That includes addressing the mismatch that currently exists in Canada between skill sets and job requirements. As the challenges our economy faces are not small or one-dimensional, neither is our plan. The government will continue to take meaSEE CANNAN A5

But almost every time there’s a murder, a rape, a beating, the victims or their families seem to express a hope that the perpetrator will be found, tried, and sentenced—so that they can have “closure.” If “closure” means “justice,” I can sympathize. Revenge, justice or forgiveness very different outlooks on ‘closure’ TAYLOR FROM A4 a powerful motivation. It may even feel good— for a while—but it solves nothing. And it drags us down towards the moral level of the person we despise. Forgiveness, on the other hand, raises our moral level. When Charles Roberts invaded the oneroom schoolhouse at West Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, killing five schoolgirls and wounding five more before shooting himself, the Amish community of-

fered forgiveness. They comforted Roberts’ wife and parents. They established a fund to help his family. They attended Roberts’ funeral. It didn’t make their own loss any less. As Donald Kraybill and other scholars have noted, the Amish willingness to forgo vengeance does not undo the tragedy or pardon the wrong. But by refusing to harbour grudges, they took a step towards healing; they prevented their grief from festering into bitterness or hatred. They knew that “clos-

Some reports say that Jun Lin’s mother converted to Catholicism during her two-month stay in Montreal. She can now, the reports say, feel some sympathy for her son’s murderer. It won’t bring her son back. But it will reduce the anger that might otherwise eat away at her from inside. The word “closure” implies that one can close a door on the past and forget it. It assumes that pain and loss will go away; life will return to normal. It won’t. It never will.

Inspiring citizen and civic involvement in enhancing the community’s resilience and liveability is a primary goal of the program. This is the second

year that Lake Country has participated in the program and the District of Lake Country looks at it as a catalyst to inventory assets and a review of progress and improvements in the community. At the same time it unifies individuals, business leaders, municipal staff and local service clubs who care about helping their community achieve its full potential. The program’s evalu-

â–ź MOVIE REVIEW

A dark night indeed as movie leaves comic beginnings behind

Likely because of recent events in Colorado, this was not only a tough

movie to watch, it was a tough movie to write about.

This, Christopher Nolan’s final instalment of the series, is pure evil

with very little comic relief. The scenes depicting a massacre at the Stock Exchange brought to mind once again just how fragile life is and how sometimes we are at the mercy of a force so terrible that life changes our world in a way we could never imagine. Having said that, the performances from this cast of stars is superb. So superb, in fact, that we forget it is a movie, and become awe stuck

the citizens of Gotham and the protagonists themselves. In fact, we actually forget that these stars themselves are heavyweights in the entertainment world to the point that they become exactly who we are meant to believe they are as they elicit the emotions that are perfectly relevant to the scenes— usually, fear and horror. What an assembly: Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne (Batman); Gary Olman, (Commissioner Gordon); British-born Tom Hardy as the evil Bane who we know from Band of Brothers and Inception; Anne Hathaway as Catwoman; 3rd Rock’s Joseph GordonLevitt (Blake); Marion Cotillard, the French actress who won an academy award for her role as Edith Piaf (Marion Tate); Morgan Freeman (Fox); Mathew Modine (Foley) and of course, Michael Caine is the loyal Alfred. From the action packed opening to the surprise ending, this show never let up. There was not a moment when the gravity of the situation wasn’t almost overwhelming or when the viewer felt that relief was

at hand. This felt like hell in every scene and every scene was played brilliantly. As Bruce Wayne’s status and finances ‘wane’ and all seems lost, there is no “light at the end of the tunnel’ moment. It is a rough couple of hours and again, perhaps because of last week’s news, there was in the theatre none of the usual murmurs, chuckles or chatter at the show’s end. There was only silence. An industry first, the studio has declined to report ticket sales from this weekend’s release, a rare w show of reverence to the events surrounding this movie. Only time will tell if movie goers actually buy tickets to see it; but this Dark Knight will have a dark shadow hanging over it for a long time to come. I give The Dark Knight Rises 3 1/2 reels with thoughts going out to our neighbours in the south who are experiencing another senseless tragedy.

Motocross rider Weintz chalks up his wins to lots of practise

For Winfield motocross rider Seth Weintz, ’getting to the top of three different classes of motocross racing is all about practice and focus. Weintz, a 14-year-old student at George Elliot school in Winfield, finished the spring motocross racing season in first place in B.C. in the 85 cc, super mini and school boy categories of the Canadian Motocross Racing Corporation. “It feels so good to win,” said Weintz, who practices at the Bear Creek motocross track or on the track his dad built on the family property. “I usually get a pretty fast start getting out of the gate.” Weintz began riding motocross bikes when he was just four-yearsold but only began competing two years ago. Once he got the taste of competition something clicked. “I like racing and competing more than just riding,” he said. “You’re always racing on a different track and moving up with bigger and faster bikes. It’s an adrenaline rush.” Weintz isn’t the only family member who is a racer. He goes up against his 12-year-old brother Ajay, who competes in the same class, which features riders from 12 to 16 years of age. In the B.C. Motorcycle Association South Series 85 cc competition for boys aged 12 to 16, Weintz roared past the competition, winning the overall points race with 318 and winning each of the seven events. Coming in third in the category was brother Ajay. It was much the same story for the elder

Weintz in the Supermini and School Boy divisions with Seth placing first and losing only a handful of races along the way. He jokes that it is also important to stay ahead of his kid brother and says practising a lot is the key to his success. “I just like riding and practising a lot,” he said,

adding that he would love to have a future in the sport. “I would like to go pro and race for a pro team.” The CMRC racing series is now idle for the summer but will start up in September with a sanctioned race at the Bear Creek motocross track.

WINFIELD motocross rider Seth Weintz has been one of B.C.’s top young racers this season. JOHN BOWMAN/CONTRIBUTOR

ported at the scene, are horribly misleading because most car crash injuries become noticeable only hours, or perhaps the next day or two, after a crash. I used my own settlements statistics of rearend collision injury claims to make my point. I focused on rear-end collisions because those are the ones least likely to be huge, fiery crashes; in fact often the damage to the vehicles is very minor. I referred to high average settlement amounts as an indication of high levels of injury, because the size of a settlement is based on the size of loss. I put a call out to the media to change the way they report on crash injuries because the public is being misled by uninformed reports of minor injuries or no injuries. Without interviewing crash victims the day or two after a crash, and then following up with them two to three years thereafter to find out if their injuries ended up being permanent, it is in my view horribly irresponsible to refer to injuries as non-existent or minor. A car crash occurs in Kelowna, on average, approximately every hour (ICBC statistic). It is a common occurrence to come upon the scene of a collision. We

ONE-HUNDRED PER CENT OF REAR-END COLLISIONS WOULD BE AVOIDED WITH A CHANGE IN DRIVER ATTITUDES… IT TAKES A CONSCIOUS DECISION TO MAKE THE ACT OF DRIVING YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY…

Paul Hergott Achieving Justice accept collisions as an inevitable fact of life. With constant messages that injuries are minor or non-existent, it’s no big deal. Perhaps with a change in how collisions are reported, if we are constantly reminded of the true facts that there is a high likelihood that vehicle occupants are injured (2,700 people are injured in Kelowna in car crashes every year— ICBC statistic) and that many of those injured will never fully recover, there will be a change in driving attitudes. A change in driving attitudes is all it takes to stop the carnage. One-hundred per cent of rear-end collisions would be avoided with a change in driver attitudes. Think about it. How do you avoid a rear-end collision? You pay attention to the road in front of you. How hard is that? The thing is, it takes

a conscious decision to make the act of driving your number one priority when behind the wheel. It is not a decision that you can make just once, as you sit there reading this column. It is a decision that must be made every time you sit behind the wheel. It is a decision that must be made constantly, as you drive down the road. Pulling from a religious analogy, I preach from the perspective of the converted. I am immersed in the same society everyone else is immersed in. I didn’t make the act of driving my number one priority either. It is not an affliction of the few, it is an ever

prevalent affliction of our society. It was as a result of recognizing, in my work as a personal injury lawyer, the seriousness of crash injuries and their impacts that I began thinking about why crashes occur and how they might be prevented. It is a result of that v thinking that I have come to the conclusion that even one crash is one too many, that crashes are caused by poor driving attitudes and poor driving attitudes can be changed. I have come up with a trick that acts as a constant reminder to make the act of driving my number one priority v when I am behind the wheel. My trick is to simply do what we are all told to do when we first learn to drive—to put our hands on the steering wheel at the 10 and two positions. It works for me because it doesn’t feel natural and comfortable and therefore it is a constant effort. That constant effort is a constant reminder to me that my act of driving is my number one priority. It works well. Here is a call out to every one of you to do the same. Just try it. SEE HERGOTT A12

Just eat fruit and veg, then think organic tionally grown produce or organic, the main goal should be to get a minimum of seven to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. One serving equals one piece of fruit or vegetable or half a cup chopped. However, if you are looking to reduce your exposure to pesticides and it’s within your budget to purchase organic then I think it’s worth it. It’s even better if you can purchase your organic food from a local source. Choosing local foods and buying organic when possible supports a more sustainable food system and allows the industry to grow. We are entering the time of year where local food is becoming abundant in our province so take advantage of your

SIMONE JENNINGS CONTRIBUTOR

People often ask me if they should buy organic fruits and vegetables. Some of the common questions I’m often asked: “Are organic foods better for you? “Are they worth the extra cost? “I want to reduce my exposure to pesticides, which fruits and vegetables have the most residues? I always start by ensuring people that a diet high in plant-based foods has many health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other health problems. The benefits of consuming adequate amounts of fruits and veggies outweigh the risk of pesticide exposure. So regardless of whether you choose conven-

local farmers markets. The thing I love about the farmers market is you can talk directly to the person who grows your food. You can inquire about their farming practices and use of pesticides (if any). Some foods tend to be more heavily treated as they are difficult to grow without getting bugs in them (if you have a cherry tree you probably know what I mean). However, other fruits and vegetables tend to be more naturally ‘bug free’ and require little or no treatment. You can significantly lower your pesticide intake by limiting the most contaminated produce (or buying them organic) and eating more of the least contaminated fruits and vegetables. The Environmental

Working Group has recently released the 2012 Shoppers Guide to Pesticide in Produce. This guide can help you determine which fruits and vegetables have the most pesticide residues. It is important to consider this as a general guide, not a hard and fast rule, as pesticide levels on foods can vary depending on where and how they are grown. The list was created based on studies done in the U.S. on local and imported fruits and vegetables. Nearly all of the studies tested produce after it had been rinsed or peeled. To view the extensive list of foods and a downloadable shoppers guide visit www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary/. Simone Jennings is a registered dietician with Interior Health.

The Central Okanagan Fruit Tree Project

is looking for volunteers to pick fruit, apricot trees to pick from, and equipment donations/lending.

The Central Okanagan Fruit Tree Project has set a goal to turn unpicked frui trees into a valuable source of food for the community. Through the Frui Tree Project, people who don’t want to pick their trees will register their tree for picking and volunteers will come out and pick the fruit. The fruit picked will be dispersed between the tree owner, the volunteer fruit pickers, and the rest will go to non-profit organizations in the Central Okanagan serving people in need, starting with the beautiful apricot. A small amount will be saved fo processing into delicious jams and other preserves which will be sold in orde to help sustain the project. It’s a Win-Win-Win-Win concept. For more information please visit: www.okanaganfood.com/fruit-tree-project
