Barista training perks back up Reprieve brewed for at-risk youth job program

By Jennifer Lang Fire up the espresso press. An award-winning job training program that’s helped brew success for hundreds of at-risk youth in Surrey, Cloverdale and Langley has been saved. New funding sources have been found to re-launch the popular Baristas program, held up as a model by the business community for giving youth a foot in the door of the labour market by helping them overcome barriers to employment. The program was axed in March, after Surrey’s Pacific Community Resources Society learned the federal government would not renew its contract under the Skills Link employment program. Students, staff and supporters even gathered for a final wrap-up party. Offered through PCRS, Starbucks Coffee Canada, the program was a unique partnership between a nonprofit agency, the private sector, the

Surrey School District, and the federal government. On July 16, the program resumed operations in Surrey, thanks to partial funding from two new sources: the Aboriginal Community Career Employment Society (ACCESS), which offers the BladeRunners youth employment program, and the B.C. Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation. Staff and supporters are feeling immense relief, said Ryan Paulson, Community Engagement Coordinator for Pacific Community Services, or PCS. “We’ve had this program since 2003,” Paulson said. “It makes such a difference for the youths who enroll. You go to a ton of graduation ceremonies and you could see the lifealtering impact. It was a shame to lose it.” As word spread about the program’s demise last spring, “people See NEW PARTNERS / Page 6

Two-year deal keeps racetracks in place

By Jeff Nagel The City of Vancouver has agreed to a two-year extension of Great Canadian Gaming’s Hastings Racecourse, putting to rest for now talk that the Lower Mainland’s two horse racing tracks might merge at a single site. Vancouver council’s delay in signing a deal to keep racing at Hastings Park and its goal of tripling green space in the park had fueled speculation thoroughbred horse racing there might soon

be relocated to Cloverdale’s Fraser Downs, which hosts standardbred harness racing. “This extension allows our company to work closely with the City of Vancouver regarding longterm operations at Hastings Racecourse without being concerned with a lease deadline looming,” Great Canadian spokesman Howard Blank said. Hastings’ lease was to expire in November and the deal now provides certainty until November 2014.

Rich Coleman, the provincial minister responsible for gaming, said in an earlier interview he expects both tracks will continue separate operations. And he said a new five-year strategic plan for the horse racing industry set for release soon will likely call continued operation of both tracks, along with significant changes, including separate management bodies for standardbred and thoroughbred racing, and the ability to separate the racetrack and casino operations.

Come see track’s hidden gems There are so many stories along the Backstretch at Fraser Downs, getting set for its annual open house To the editor; On Aug. 11 a community within our community invites you to their open house. This is the Backstretch at Fraser Downs. Come in. Look further than big red barns and aluminum scoopers. Listen. There are stories here; lots of them. I’d like to share some with you before you cross the welcome mat. 6 a.m. The calico cat sits atop a pile of limestone; a self-appointed watchman, taking everything in. There is a rhythm to this place, and he is quick to notice any misstep. For the moment, all is well. He yawns and gives his face a quick wash. Time to make the rounds. The buildings are abuzz. His people have arrived. They are many. They groom and walk with, and yes even talk with, the horses. They muck the stalls, fix the walls, shoe the hooves and order the feed. They tend to everything horses may need. They are owners, officials, starters and vets, drivers and trainers and volunteers. They are all part this place. Some can’t seem to get enough of it. Take Ray, for instance. Records show that Ray Gemmill (located on the east side of Barn D) was here on opening day over 36 years ago, partnered with racehorse Guy Dominion. Together they won the first race ever run at Cloverdale, much to the delight of Guy Dominion’s owners; a small group of hockey players from none other than the Vancouver Canucks. Retired as a driver since 1991, it’s been said that Mr. Gemmill doesn’t care much for sleeping in. This octogenarian with 486 lifetime wins is not one to sit idle. He continues to train a few horses and that’s good news for up and coming young driver/trainers that may want to glean something from his years of experience. But they’ll have to catch him first. He can still handle a jog cart. Like Ray, Bill Young (located on the west side of Barn F) has also remained busy over the years. He is a trainer with over $1 million in earnings and 231 lifetime training wins. Standardbreds are a versatile breed and Bill’s favorite horse, Woodmere Windrop, is retired now, retrained as a riding horse. The owners and trainers here support Greener Pastures B.C. Standardbred Horse Adoption Society, a non-profit organization, where people like Alina McLeod are dedicated to finding caring, after track homes for retired racehorses. Her placements areas have included the B.C. interior, Washington state and even Alaska. Of course, one cannot speak of dedication without mentioning Marion Young, Bill’s wife. Prior to her passing, Marion’s passion for the Standardbreds seemed limitless. Whether she was promoting the industry by leading Backstretch tours, adding some items to the Hall of Fame display case in the atrium at the casino main lobby, or just being avail-

able to chat, she did so with the sincerity of someone that truly and deeply cared. The Marion Young Pace for Fillies race was created early last year to honor her memory and her contributions to Fraser Downs and the Standardbred industry. Monetary contribution has also been recognized. Last year, the Surrey Chamber of Commerce saw Dave Hudon (located in Barn B) and other drivers, address their luncheon with their intention to donate their driver’s commission from that set of Western Regional Championship races to the Surrey Association for Community Living. Dave always seems to be in the top five drivers and trainers listing and he and his wife Kelly are always willing to spend some time helping with the Cloverdale Christmas Parade. Like any good watchman, the calico cat is sure not to overlook the little things on site, so a trip to the infield is in order. Turtles Digger, Diver and Daisy became accidental celebrities about five years ago when a security camera projected their pond onto the Clubhouse big screen. Ever since, patrons expect at least one “Turtle-Cam” update on race days. Rumour has it that the little family may be expanding but for now things remain status quo. The watchman moves on to Barn D where three year old standouts Gotta Have Nukes, Hector Protector and Thieving Magpie are keeping Rick White busy. Rick has driven over 2092 wins in his career. His training wins alone break the thousand mark. T Magpie and H Protector are owned by

The Cloverdale

retired Air Canada pilot David Woolley and his wife Freda. While David had lots of opportunity to travel back in the day, he also enjoyed spending some time as a trainer at Fraser Downs. Speaking of travel, there are a number of young people that spend their time shuffling back and forth between home, school and the Backstretch. Carson Abbott (son of Gord Abbott of Barn C) helps out around the barn while older brothers John and Mark are getting their feet wet in the driving and training program. Family and industry roots run deep here, as do internal and external support systems. For example, competitors will split the cost of bedding for the benefit of all. A good amount Backstretch repair product and feed and tack supplies are locally sourced. Even the on site coffee shop’s on board with an IOU if you forget your wallet in between races. Sometimes complicated, always necessary, relationships and connections are what make this place work. Yes, upon first impression, the fabric may look a little worn, but right now, because of what you don’t see, there are no holes here. Well ...maybe just the ones horses dig in their flooring or the ones little barn mice sneak through at night. But that’s nothing that a pile of limestone and a calico cat can’t fix. So for the moment, all is well. S.L. McDonald, Langley

They’re Kitsilano bound The Versatiles take the show on the road – to the Showboat

By Jennifer Lang When Susie Francis and The Versatiles take the stage at the storied Kitsilano Showboat in Vancouver next month, they’ll be walking in the footsteps – and treading the boards – of B.C. entertainment history. The Versatiles, led by director Susie Francis Hall, are a goldenaged variety group specializing in Vaudeville-style entertainment with a modern twist. “We entertain all age groups,” says show emcee Terry Morrissey, who’s been with the troupe

for 12 years. It’s good, old-fashioned entertainment that involves, songs, corny jokes, skits – even a magic show. “You can bring your grandchildren, or bring your grand father. We’re a clean family show,” explains Morrissey, adding there’s up to 30 costume changes in a single show. Musical director Francis, a “versatile” multifaceted performer in her own right, comes from a long line of performers. (By some accounts, she’s the

sixth generation in her family to take the stage.) And on Aug. 11, Susie and The Versatiles will perform their show A Blast from the Past at the Kitsilano Showboat, the outdoor performance stage located on the shores of Vancouver’s Kitsilano Beach. In the tradition of her grandfather, Frank Dowie, her dad Fran Dowie, and her mom, Candy Kane, Susie will be teaming up with a colourful ensemble cast. See DOUG, 91 / Page 6

just kind of came knocking on our door” with offers of help, Paulson said. “That led to discussions on what we could do to get it going.” The new funding doesn’t match previous levels, so only one full-time staffer can be hired instead of two, something it’s hoped will change once additional partners come on board. “We are actively looking for other public and private sector organizations who want to come on board and contribute to this initiative,” Kay Sarai, manager of employment and community services at PCRS, said, adding it’s a great way to give back the community. Over the past decade, the program has helped hundreds of youth overcome serious barriers to employment, such as addiction and abuse. Participants go through an inten-

sive, six-week life skills program, followed by a nine-week, paid work placement at Starbucks – including locations in Cloverdale – where they are treated like any other employee and held to the same expectations. Many successful graduates were offered jobs at Starbucks upon completion. Paulson said the program is a solid example of how multi-sector partnerships can work: the school district provides school credit for the participants, the service agencies help deliver the program, and a corporation provides work experience and often permanent jobs for successful graduates. It represents a second chance that many of the candidates wouldn’t otherwise receive. “It really gives them a chance to turn things around in a critical point in their lives,” he said.

Step up, Surrey To the editor; Re: ‘Race track merge likely on hold’, July 26 Fraser Downs is not a large enough site for a combined effort. Surrey has an opportunity to step up and become a North American leader in equine entertainment. The way racing is trending there will be just a handful of tracks that are sustainable in both Canada and the U.S. A major western racetrack built with city, provincial and federal funding and support would draw huge numbers of horsemen from other areas (including Washington and California) the benefit to the city of Surrey in terms of economy and visibility would likely have a

huge plus side in numerous ways.

That Changes Everything Change. Some people dread it. The thought of dealing with a new job, a new school, a new home fills them with anxiety and uncertainty. Even new clothes have to hang in the closet for a while before they’re worn. And as for new food, forget it; meat and potatoes are all they want. Change. Wise, a veteran of the 40th Royal Marine Commando, will be marching at the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Dieppe, where he fought as part of Britain’s elite paramilitary force, the Green Berets, during the Second World War. The Battle of Dieppe took place Aug. 19, 1942. Forces such as Wise’s from the United Kingdom, as well as those from Canada, the U.S. and France launched a raid on the German-occupied port of Dieppe. The attack was unsuccessful in that more than half of the 6,000 men who went ashore were either killed, captured or wounded. However, it’s been argued that the lessons learned there paved the way for the successful D-Day landing in Normandy in June 1944 and the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation the following year. “When I talk to people, they’re not aware of Dieppe,” says Wise. “I would like to raise awareness about how important this was.” While it’s not the first time Wise has travelled to Dieppe to honour his fallen comrades and reunite with other survivors, it will be the first time he’ll be placing crosses – complete with a poppy at the

Rabih Bobo is APPL student at Kwantlen University.

Trading a law degree for opportunity Rabih Bobo doesn’t exactly sound like your average appliance technician. But he recognizes opportunity when he sees it. Originally from Lebanon, Bobo holds a law degree, an international air transport association diploma, and a graduate diploma in conflict analysis and management – not exactly the sort of background that springs to mind when it comes to trades and technology studies. But after moving to Canada from Dhabi, where he worked at the British Embassy for the past seven years, he realized his ultimate dream is to go into business for himself. He enrolled in Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s appliance servicing program at the Cloverdale campus because he saw a growing trend in retiring technicians. “Learning a trade is a life-changing experience,” he says. “But most of all it is exciting, because when you are done studying the sky’s the limit.” Instructor Tom Westgate says the appliance servicing program is a promising career choice for a wide variety of students, from grads fresh out of high school and mature students to newcomers to Canada. “The program is designed so anyone, regardless of background, is able to gain practical experience, and set themselves up for a career in appliance servicing.” Kwantlen’s APPL program is the only full-time program in Canada that offers appliance servicing as a career. For the past 40 years, grads have found employment as technicians, owners, managers and technical trainers in the appliance industry in B.C., across Canada and in the U.S. Some have also found work in the commercial cooking sector, vending machine repair, furnace and fireplace service sectors and other electromechanical occupations. Q What’s the difference between a solid-state hard drive and a regular hard drive?

A If you want to treat yourself you’ll have the faster,

relatively costly, new solid-state hard drive. It’s silent & has lower power consumption. Both hard drives save data & eventually (more than 5 years) all hard drives will be solid state. Big gas leak Dozens of businesses were evacuated in South Surrey after a natural gas line was severed Monday. Surrey city crews were working in the area of 24 Avenue and 160 Street when they cut though a high-pressure FortisBC gas line. Several businesses and offices were evacuated while the line was being repaired. Vincent Lalonde, Surrey’s General Manager of Engineering, said he was investigating how and why the pipe was severed. “We always use (BC) One Call. Right now we’re interviewing the crews to make sure exactly what happened,” Lalonde said, adding the city was working at capping off a water main at the southeast corner of 24 Avenue and 160 Street when it happened. Witnesses said the leak from the four-inch gas pipe sounded like a jet engine, and fire crews who got closer said it was deafening. The gas discharging from the pipe was extremely flammable, according to

Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger. “This is about as big as it gets,” Grainger told Black Press. “The potential for danger is obviously huge.” He said that if it detonated, the results would be catastrophic. Veronica Moretti, who works at Turner Geox in the mall, said the area was consumed with a foul odour. “The smell of gas was way, way, way too much,” Moretti said. “We were all running around ‘What’s happening? What’s happening?’ “ Road closures were extensive, with 24 Avenue shut down from King George Boulevard to 168 Street and the 2200-block of Croydon Drive to Mall Access Road just north of 24 Avenue. Witnesses reported hearing a loud, prolonged noise prior to being evacuated. Outside, people said the noise was described like that of a jet engine. Repair teams from Fortis arrived on scene at about 2:15 p.m. and the gas was shut off within an hour. – Kevin Diakiw, Black Press

Q A

What do you do about kids that want to quit? When parents inquire about a martial arts program we often hear the concern that their children have difficulty sticking with a program (softball, swimming, soccer etc.) and they are worried about committing to a program. As with most things, it is how we are taught to deal with the challenges and obstacles that we face in life that will determine what we do the next time we encounter difficulty. If a child is allowed to quit when they get bored or things get difficult then in the future when obstacles arise it will be much easier to quit again. Essentially if we allow them to quit, we are teaching them to be quitters. In Martial Arts the journey to Black Belt is hard (as is any goal worth achieving). Every class presents challenges that the student must overcome with the help of their instructors and peers. Just as with quitting, each time an obstacle is overcome the student learns that through persistence it is not 'am I going to continue' but 'what do I need to do to meet this challenge'. The lessons learned by conquering obstacles might be what it takes later in life to reach signicant goals such as graduating from high school or university or maybe getting that promotion at work. At Cloverdale Black Belt Academy the majority of students that enroll in their first class as a white belt, eventually reach the goal of Black Belt (an accomplishment that takes years to complete). t’s the ultimate summer event in the historic heart of Surrey, so it’s only fitting that the 9th annual Cloverdale Blueberry Festival is getting in touch with its roots.

serving up a plethora of pancake breakfasts and lunchtime barbecues at various points in the town centre.

Presented by the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association and the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and partners, the festival continues to grow and evolve, getting bigger and better every year.

“Again, as a community, we always seek to get more and more members of it profiling what we do, so it really is a pure, community event,” Orazietti says.

There’s a definite heritage theme being added to the mix in 2012, with activities like an historic walking tour of downtown Cloverdale, actors in period costume portraying some of Surrey’s most colorful pioneer characters, an antique tractor pull, antique car zone and more.

As always, paying homage to the great and mighty blueberry is front and centre, inspiring delicious pies, pancake and fruit sales – and a parent’s greatest blackmail photo op: the blueberry pie-eating contest, where competitive eaters of all ages will chow (face) down.

“You can see history permeating the whole event,” says festival coorganizer Paul Orazietti.

Contestants are draped in large, yellow garbage bags protecting them from the inevitable onslaught of blueberry pie goo. Spectators take note: it’s called The Splash Zone for a reason. Consider yourself warned.

We may not have castles or Roman ruins, he says, but we do have a proud history to discover and celebrate. The festival is also a chance for local service organizations to shine,

Competitors are mostly kids, but

there’s always a few adults determined to take up the challenge. (Located in the Family Zone at Clover Square Village, also hosting the talent showcase, BMX stunt shows, face painting, minigolf and more). Clover Square Village also hosts the Race Car Zone, new this year. It features quarter-mile drag racers on display, including a top field nitro-burning funny car capable of traveling a quarter mile in less than four seconds. Candy-coloured classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars and motorcycles

will line Cloverdale’s 176 and 176A Streets in the historic town centre for the Surrey Show ‘n Shine (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Surrey Museum Plaza hosts the Surrey Art Council’s Blueberry Arts Festival, a visual and performing arts showcase, plus a juried art competition, draft sales and more. The Surrey Museum presents three, must-see events, the Fire Truck open house, Pic Knit, and blueberry festival activities, including a kids play area, craft table and historic actors reenacting Surrey history and events.

out. “Because of staffing challenges, it’s hard for them to get as many booths as we’d like.”

Actors stationed at various festival points will recreate the lives and experiences of early settlers such as Reeve T.J. Sullivan, carpenter Eric Anderson, Dr. Fredrick Sinclair, and school teacher Mary Jane Shannon.

The Versatiles, a golden-aged performing arts troupe, are putting on a show at noon Saturday at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino, hosting the two-day Antique Tractor Pull (1-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday) and the Antique Zone inside the track, where you can admire Model As and pioneer trucks from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Over at Brick Yard Station (Highway 10 and 176 Street bypass), meet some of Cloverdale’s newest merchants at an open house. It’s also the British Car Zone. Ironically, for a festival with the name blueberry in the title, you may be hard pressed to find many blueberry producers on hand. The festival takes place when local blueberry producers are working at their max, harvesting the quicklyripening crop. “A lot of berry farming tends to be a wholesale business,” he points

At the northern-most end of the festival, there’s the Dinotown Live attraction at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, Orazietti said.

“That is all bringing local people together who can do their thing and are in that [historic] vein,” says Orazietti. “It really kind of marries up nicely.”

The B.C. Heritage Transport Centre (Cloverdale Fairgrounds), while not open, will be displaying a few of the newly-acquired antique freight trucks that recently returned to Cloverdale.

t’s a festival like no other, showcasing nearly everything Cloverdale has to offer.

With dozens of attractions to take in, from muscle cars to Model As, pancake breakfasts and barbecue lunches, live actors and family fun, not to mention homemade pie, you’ll want to make sure you get the most out of your experience at the 9th annual Cloverdale Blueberry Festival.

Remember, festivities and attractions are organized into zones.

Surrey Show ‘n Shine The signature event is the Surrey Show ‘n Shine, a day-long car show (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) that draws participants from across the Lower Mainland. This year, the show moves beyond the downtown core of 176 Street and 176A Street, where there are live music performances, vendors market, food vendors and more. Horsepower fans will find lots to do at Clover Square Village, aka the Race Car Zone. Watch 1/4 mile dragsters with live demos and check out other speedy race cars.

Look for the Antique Zone at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino – heritage and vintage vehicles are on display inside the track.

Antique Tractor Pull The two-day Antique Tractor Pull at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino (Aug. 4-5), originally a stand-alone event, has grown. Tractor drivers from across the Fraser Valley are bringing their antique tractors to Cloverdale for a heavy-duty competition. Over two days, competitors driving antique, pre-1960 tractors will square off in 10 different weight categories. Each tractor is hooked up to a sled full of weights, which rises higher and higher in the air as the tractor moves further forward. Organizer Vern Keller, a member of the Cloverdale Legion, collects vintage John Deere tractors and classic cars. Competition runs from 1-3 p.m. both days. The event is open to all ages, no charge. Call 604308-2443 for more.

August August4-5, 4, 2012

Antique Zone This year, the track at Fraser Downs is also the location for the Antique Zone, where collectors will show off their vintage and antique cars. The Pacific Model A Club and the B.C. Pioneer Truck Club have confirmed. Running from 10 am. to 4 p.m. At noon, enjoy a performance featuring Susie Francis and the Versatiles. Check out a few of the antique trucks in the B.C. Heritage Transportation Centre, which hasn’t opened to the public yet. Vehicles will be stationed at various locations around Cloverdale, including Fraser Downs.

Family Zone Clover Square Village hosts the blueberry pie eating contest, BMX bike show, and the BC Junior Talent Show, along with the Lions pancake breakfast and barbecue, antique tractor display, vendors, Cinemazoo, a bouncy castle and mini golf. Kids will enjoy free facepainting, balloons and blueberry tattoos. Continued on page B9

ne of the featured artists at this year’s Blueberry Arts Festival is Cloverdale’s Mary-Lou Williams, an art teacher at Clayton Heights Secondary.

An instructor for 32 years, Williams, Fine Arts Department head, has never stopped pursuing her own varied artistic interests, painting, sculpting, drawing and doing pottery.

“I’ve always done art,” she says, explaining she’s amassed a huge body of work over the years in addition to her teaching duties – a role that she clearly relishes and draws artistic sustenance from.

Mary-Lou Williams is one of the exhibitors at the Art Zone at the Blueberry Arts Festival, where her painting, Blueberries, will be for sale.

A recipient of the B.C. Art Teacher’s Excellence in Art Education Award for 2012, Williams loves teaching.

“I’m a busy lady sometimes!” she confides, adding “being on the farm, I love animals. Those things always seem to find a way into my paintings.”

While excited about exploring new horizons on the artistic front, she’s also looking forward to getting back to her students again in the fall.

“It’s very rewarding to see someone master something. That lightbulb comes on and they have an aha! moment,” she says.
