Long jumper wins bronze at Summer Games BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Kootenay Zone may have brought home 15 medals from the 2012 BC Summer Games, but only one matters to Kieran Simpson: the bronze he earned in the long jump competition. His longest jump was 5.32 meters, which put him in third place, behind Valemount’s Omar Medina, who won with 5.95 metres, and second-place Felix Law of Vancouver, who jumped 5.4 in the Games, which ran July 19-22 in Surrey. Simpson said the fact that it was a provincial competition didn’t bother him, but knowing it was part of the BC Summer Games did make him a bit anxious. “The Summer Games made me more nervous, especially compared to Kootenay meets where there’s not as much pressure,” said the 15-year-old. Simpson also competed in the 100- and 200-metre runs, in which he placed 17th and 19th, respectively. Each long jumper jumped three times in a first round and three times in a second — for Simpson, that meant a round of jumping, then running 200 metres, followed by the final round of jumping. “I jumped even farther after I did the race,” he said. Simpson enjoyed the scale of the event, from the top-notch competitiors to the opening ceremonies, which “were huge.”

Last week’s Ktunaxa Nation annual general assembly included the renewal of an agreement designed to improve health outcomes for First Nations people in the East Kootenay. Ktunaxa Nation chair Kathryn Teneese and Interior Health Authority board chair Norman Embree re-signed a letter of understanding (LOU) at Lower Kootenay on July 25. “The long term health of the Aboriginal population within the Ktunaxa’s Traditional Territory is a priority,” said Teneese. “By working with Interior Health, we are increasing the understanding of health and cultural needs and how best to meet them either in a clinical or community environment.” Since the original signing of the LOU in 2009, the partnership has led to a number of initiatives.

“R

evival” means a restoration to life, consciousness, vigour and strength, or an awakening in a church or community. That is what is behind the efforts of a group of Creston’s young people. Revival in the Park will be a two-evening celebration of creation, life and faith, taking place at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 3 and 4 in Millennium Park. The program involves worship, music, guest speakers and mime. Everyone is welcome to attend. With free admission, catching the evenings at the downtown

location could be a great summertime activity. The hope is to challenge the young people of the Creston Valley to grow in leadership and initiative. Revival in the Park is put together by interdenominational young adults with the support of the Creston Ministerial Association. The event has a vision for unity, worship and discipleship. Anyone who chooses to attend can anticipate an inspirational combination of talent and participation. “A group of us saw the need to come together,” said co-ordinator Megan Cook. “We feel like God is stirring something here in our area. We are waiting to respond and inspire the Creston Valley to live for Christ.”

Simpson wins bronze Judokas compete at nationals

Kieran Simpson with the bronze medal he won at the BC Summer Games.

From page 1 “There were tons of people everywhere,” he said. “It was easy to get lost.” The long jumpers and other track competitors spent their nights in sleeping bags cushioned by gym mats on classroom floors at Surrey’s Enver Creek Secondary School. And in the day, they were shuttled from place to place as necessary. “Every day, we had to get on a bus to go eat,” Simpson said. “There was a specific spot for everything, even a place to shower.” Despite his achievement, Simpson modestly shrugs off praise, knowing that long jump just happened to be the sport for him. “In elementary school, you do every sport,” he said. “I was better at this one than most.”

Agreement helps IHA meet Aboriginal needs

From page 1 Those initiatives include: •urban services — Street Angel Project in Cranbrook. This program provides street and at risk people, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, with a place to meet, connect and receive services such as health care; •establishment of an Aboriginal space at East Kootenay Regional Hospital, and Aboriginal self-identification project at IHA facilities. Aboriginal peoples who self identify are offered the services of an Aboriginal patient navigator and/or Aboriginal patient liaison who provides them with culturally sensitive assistance. The Aboriginal patient navigator supports Aboriginal patients, caregivers, and their families during a hospital stay, and the Aboriginal patient liaison works with Aboriginal clients to access community services; •direct mental health service delivery — the creation and implementation of programs combining traditional practices with therapeutic and clinical methods; •youth collaboration and planning — through the Street Angel program, the need for

youth programs was identified due to the significant number of at-risk youth in Cranbrook. Five projects have been implemented; and •physician and nurse visits to communities allow Ktunaxa people to receive health care services on reserve in a culturally appropriate and sensitive manner. “Agreements, like the letter of understanding with the Ktunaxa Nation, are important for Interior Health,” said Embree. “By continuing to work collaboratively with the Ktunaxa, and other First Nations and Aboriginal groups, we are increasing our ability to meet health needs, improve access and increase Aboriginal involvement in health service decisions.” The new letter of understanding is in perpetuity with reviews scheduled every five years. The LOU encompasses health services for all Aboriginal peoples, including Métis and Inuit, who live within the Ktunaxa traditional territory. The Ktunaxa Nation council is made up of the communities of St. Mary’s, Lower Kootenay, Akisqnuk and Tobacco Plains.

There is some serious mojo at the Creston dojo. Four young Creston Judo Club members have participated in national judo championships this summer, one returning with gold and another earning both gold and bronze medals. Leelen Samuelson, 18, and Dillon Hack, 17, both recent black belt recipients, went to Toronto earlier this month as part of a 100-strong B.C. contingent in the Judo Canada national championships. Samuelson, competing in the 73-kilogram class, earned the trip to Canada’s largest judo event with a strong performance in a trial competition in Richmond. He fought in the under 20 division and the seniors division, which included fighters up to 35 years old. “I finished seventh in the seniors event, which included 22 participants,” he said. “But I didn’t win a match in the under 20. Unfortunately, I had rolled my ankle at work a month before and I just didn’t have enough strength after a while.” Samuelson said the stay in Toronto, his fifth trip to a national championship, was worth the effort it took to qualify. The weeklong tournament was followed up with a four-day training camp that included instruction “from some exceptional teachers,” including one from Brazil. “We learned a lot of different types of European grips,” Hack said. “Every country has its own style of fighting and knowing the styles helps you adapt to whatever you are facing in a match.” Hack said getting to spend time with competitors from other parts of the country is a valuable experience. “We get to know each other’s moves pretty fast here in the Kootenays and even B.C.,” he said. “So it was good to go up against strangers. It offers knew challenges.” Fighting in the 81-kilogram class, Hack won the first match in the entire tournament, dropping his opponent “in about three seconds.” Hack said there was little time to socialize during the team’s 10 days in Toronto, other than at the opening banquet, but that he enjoyed his second trip to a national championship. Samuelson, who started judo when he was six, and Hack, who took up the sport at 11, both teach younger students and each has qualified to referee matches,

to Spokane this month, where he participated in the USA Judo junior national championships, an event that drew about 5,000 fighters to the city’s convention centre. “It seemed very strange to be attending a judo event that had more people than Creston,” said Terry Rendek, Kaeden’s father and president of the Creston Judo Club. Kaeden, 11, competed in the under 13 38-kilogram class and came away with a bronze medal, winning all of his matches except a pair against the Hawaii state champion. With a dozen fighters in his division, he had to fight six times in one day, compared to Hack and Samuelson, who fought only twice a day. Most of his competitors were state champions or runners-up in a tournament that attracted most of the best young judokas in the U.S. Kaeden was one of only five Canadians competing in the tournament, which included fighters from as far away as Spain and Hungary. He holds an orange-green belt and plans to earn his green belt soon. Next year he will be eligible for the Canadian championships. He also teamed up with clubmate Joseph Albert, whose father is a local judo instructor, in the nage-no-kata competition to win a gold medal. In nage-no-kata, pairs perform 15 different throwing techniques, and are judged on their form. Despite being the youngest competitors in the event, Rendek and Albert won

the event in their class, besting two other teams. “What impressed the organizers and judges at the kata competition was Joseph was only 10 years old and Kaeden was only 11,” said

Terry. “They were quite young to be so well versed in an ancient art form. Both judges and organizers alike complimented the boys for entering the competition and for doing so well. As far as we know, this may be Creston’s first medal at a U.S. national level.” As gold medal winners, the youngsters are U.S. national champions and have been invited to defend their title next year in Pittsburgh. The three fighters put a lot of effort into judo. Hack and Samuelson are each on the mats for four hours a week, in addition to their teaching responsibilities. Samuelson also enjoys soccer and Hack spends lots of time in the gym. Kaeden attends the judo club four times a week for a total of about eight hours and he also plays soccer, swims and runs every day. Terry said the 30-member club continues to grow. He said thanks are due to the Columbia Basin Trust, which helped fund coaching expenses for the national tournament, and that Regional District of Central Kootenay areas B and C and the Town of Creston are strong supporters of the club. The athletes also credited the work of coaches Ben Reinhardt, Munro Albert and Donovan Hack for their support. “We also owe a huge thank you to the community for supporting the Creston Judo Club’s fundraising efforts,” Rendek said. “It’s very gratifying to have such strong support for our young judokas.”

Museum hosting annual tea with suffrage theme BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Continuing a longstanding tradition, the Creston Museum’s Old-Fashioned Tea returns Aug. 11, this time with a historic twist — a visit by suffragette Dorothy Davis, reappearing 100 years after her first visit to Creston. Members of Footlighters Theatre Society will present a skit featuring Davis, the most recent in a series of theatrical presentations at the tea. Key of She will also join the fun, singing a couple of songs, including Sister Suffragette from the film Mary Poppins. “When we did the Anne of Green Gables tea in 2008 and had skits from the book — people loved that,” said museum manager Tammy Hardwick. “There were none last year, and people missed them.” Volunteers came across a reference to Davis’s 1912 visit to Creston around the time of last year’s tea, and her inclusion in this year’s was an easy decision. While the tea will retain its usual format — tea or lemonade and dainty sand-

wiches, followed by squares and desserts — guests can get a little more involved with the topic of suffrage. If they choose, guests entering the tea will receive a quote from a historical Creston figure to read during a debate/discussion portion. “Everyone I’ve talked to about it just loves this idea,” said Hardwick. “Either they’re, “Rah rah for women’s votes,” or, “No damn way.’ It’s all in good fun, so anything anyone says wouldn’t necessarily be indicative of their own opinions.” Hats, signs and banners will also be available for guests to wear and wave. The discovery of Davis’s visit to Creston happened solely by chance — very little was printed about it, as the editor of the Creston Review was likely not a supporter. “He published two letters from Dorothy Douglas and that’s it,” said Hardwick. Admission to the Old-Fashioned Tea is $8, which includes a free tour of the museum. Seatings are at 1, 2 or 3 p.m., and it is recommended guests make reservations by calling the museum at 250-428-9262.

Conclusion of this week’s police news From page 4 •A theft of property was reported in a family dispute on Canyon-Lister Road. •A male who had been living in his vehicle on private property reported his vehicle had been stolen, when in fact it had been towed away. •Patrolling police found an intoxicated male who had his car keys taken away on 10th Avenue North. He was walking in a T-shirt and underwear and was transported to a safe location. •A motorcyclist sustained minor injuries when he skidded out of control

on gravel on Highway 3A. •An intoxicated male and female, both breaching court conditions, were arrested on Okell Road and held in police cells until sober, then released with further charges. •A swimmer reported missing in Pilot Bay was found OK a short time later. •A complaint about an dog howling early in the morning on 21st Avenue South was referred to the Town of Creston bylaw department. Last week, for the first time since she became premier, Christy Clark sounded like a leader instead of a salesperson. She went on record about the proposed Enbridge pipeline, asserting that B.C. would have to derive clear economic benefits from the northern B.C. project beyond the jobs that its construction will provide. The response by Alberta premier Alison Redford was as predictable as it was wrong-headed. She turned a cold shoulder to Clark’s demand, claiming that Alberta would not agree to sharing its oil royalties. That’s not exactly a surprise — if Alberta was taking a reasonable cut of oil revenues, or using it more responsibly, tossing a few percentage points B.C.’s way wouldn’t be such a big deal. But they aren’t. Take a look at what Alberta has done compared to Norway. With roughly the same amount of gas and oil production, the two jurisdictions have taken vastly different approaches. Maybe it’s because Norway is a country and Alberta is a province, maybe Norwegians are just smarter. But while Alberta’s vaunted Heritage Savings Trust Fund (HSTF), started when Peter Lougheed was premier, now stands at about $16 billion, Norway’s Oil Fund, or global pension fund (GPFG), now holds more than $614 billion. Its investments make it the largest stockholder in Europe. Not to say Albertans haven’t benefited from oil royalties — the provincial government funnels billions into infrastructure and services so that it can hold down income taxes and keep Alberta a sales tax-free province. Essentially,

it tosses surplus budget money into the HSTF. By contrast, Norway puts all of its royalties into the GPFG and has severe restrictions on how money can be

So, since our anniversary just quietly slipped past, do you remember what I was wearing the first time? Didn’t think so, but it was a black T-shirt with our logo and an “Ask Me! button pinned on the front. I am, of course, referring to the facility grand opening, which was June 26, 2010, on a beautiful summer day. It is hard to believe that two years has slipped by since the ribbon was cut and a pretty healthysized crowd slipped inside to check things out. Ironically, you could probably state that the crowd is healthier now, or at least the ones coming in and using the place are. As we prep for the fall leisure guide, it is interesting on the changes to the programming over these past couple years as we gather more information and feedback on what works, what doesn’t and the grey area in between. Without a track record, as it is an entirely “new building, we have successes beyond expectations in some areas and some flops in others as we develop content within some pretty rigid fiscal guidelines and the changing demographic of users. I will say, however, the duds have

been few and are a given in any facility offering programming. What is apparent (and unlike the stock market) is the rising numbers of guest visits over the previous

Time change not needed

To the Editor: (Re: “Valley Should Consider Time Change”, July 5 Advance) Coun. Judy Gadicke must have nothing to do to bring up the time again. I can see why the regional directors have not responded; it is not an issue worth wasting time and money over. There are so many issues that should take precedence, for instance the numerous noxious weeds on many properties and ditches in town — which are devastating to agriculture — the conditions of Erickson Street, Highway 3 east of town and Highway 21 (all winter and summer), policing and more. You state improved health, which is very debatable as there are studies showing that losing an hour of sleep is very harmful to humans. Regarding the hospital, if these companies wish to do business with the district, then their equipment should be able to handle the job, at no extra charge. If not, why do we deal with them? Lastly, appointments and electronic devices — really? Cranbrook is not the only place people go for appointments. If you are worrying about citizens’ VCRs then we need to spend the money you are wasting on this and direct it toward doing a study on all town salaries and wages, as everyone is making way too much money. How much have we/you spent on this nonissue thus far? Democracy works, just not the way you want it in this case. Greg Pascut Creston

Grateful for helpful locals

To the Editor: I recently had an unfortunate vehicle breakdown while entering the Creston Valley Mall. My truck decided to blow a diesel injector line and stall with my trailer almost clear of Highway 3. Panic was the immediate reaction as diesel oil spurted out of my engine right there in the entranceway. I called for a tow truck and fire department and just then, a kind gentleman came walking over and settled me down assuring me the problem was not as bad as I assessed. Another car drove up and my two experts diagnosed the problem, and yes, Mike and Jim, you were right on with your assessment. Thank you so

much for calming me down. Thanks to 24 Hour Towing for getting my truck to repair and cleaning up the diesel mess in the entranceway. And Creston Fire Rescue, thanks for coming and assessing the fire situation. It is fortunate diesel has a low flash point or disaster would surely have resulted. Just then an unbelievable act of kindness took place. I am amazed there are still wonderful people in the world such as the couple going to Vancouver. My trailer was unhitched and stranded in the mall lot and this shopping couple recognized this fact. They insisted on unhooking their RV, drove over to my RV, hooked up and backed it to a safe sidewalk spot, unhooked and hitched their own back up. They were so kind, and my offers of some reward were refused with, “Glad to help. What goes around comes around!” It sure did refresh my mind on how great people can be. Thank you, folks, and I sure hope your “comes around” comes real soon for you both. Thanks, Sheldon and Kokanee Ford, for your speedy repair service. The truck worked just fine the rest of my trip. Ron and Donna Phillips, you are such fine people and I can’t thank you enough for all the help you extended to us — a yard full of people and you still assisted us with genuine class. Creston is a wonderful community and it is the local people who make it so great. Dan Boyle Williams Lake

Neighbours too noisy To the Editor: I just had to write a letter to emphasize the enormous noise and air pollution the residents of Elsie Holmes Road commit to their beautiful neighbourhood. When I built my home on Elsie Holmes Road, I thought I had the most beautiful place in the world to spend the last days of my existence on earth. I have learned to regret that decision. It seems that the neighborhood is determined to disturb anybody from enjoying the peaceful setting, especially the neighbor that decided to mow their lawn on Mother’s Day evening from 5-8 p.m., the first really nice day to enjoy the evening on the deck. And this neighbor constantly complains about the barking dogs next door. Do they not realize that one form of noise pollution is no different than another? I just wonder who these people are trying to impress because nobody cares how short their lawn is mowed. If everybody would let their lawn grow

to four inches or wait two weeks before cutting, they would save a lot on lawnmower gas and less air pollution and they would have a much healthier lawn. And, do not water! Grass is designed to go into hibernation when it gets hot and dry. Sure it turns brown, but so what, nobody cares. And you don’t have to spend your weekend cutting it and annoying everybody around you. Go with nature. I have lost my love with Wynndel because of this annoying invasion on my ability to enjoy my place in peace. If I could sell, I’d be gone in a minute. Bryan Wuzinski Wynndel

Not a friend of CVWMA To the Editor: Welcome to Duck Lake, all birds, snakes, turtles, frogs, salamanders and any and all amphibians. Not welcome: any tourists, fishermen, fish, large game, cattle (unless it is on land rented out by the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area) and anybody or anything that could be a liability. I’m usually fairly patient, so I went back to the CVWMA administration office to find out when the dike would be open. I was told that it was going to be closed for a while yet, so I NOW back for asked and received money my Duck Lake permit. I was also told RECYCLING that they don’t really care about the fact that Duck Lake LEAD is arguably the best bass lake in Canada. ACIDA lot of tourists from around western Canada, VEHICLE the Creston Valley and the U.S. do BATTERIES care and would love to spend some money here. I would suggest that you take back your Duck Lake permits, too, tell them you’re not happy and that you want your money back. Oh, and if they tell you that it is good until next March, don’t worry — they will probably have the dyke closed. What is so wrong with using Duck Lake as a tourist draw? The south end of Kootenay Lake has improved by leaps and bounds with some good management, so why not do the same thing with Duck Lake? The sport fishing industry is a multibillion-dollar industry, and the CVWMA could tap into this gold mine if it really wanted, without disturbing all of the projects it is working on. It’s the 21st century, not 1968 when this was born. CVWMA, you used to have me as a friend, but until you guys start to do things that make sense, count me out. Don Melnychuk Creston

Beets tasty and healthy

There is a lot of fresh produce at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market! There are plenty of cherries, raspberries, peas, baby carrots, potatoes, kale, lettuce, peppers and tomatoes, and there will be

The

much more this month. The market will run as usual from 8 a.m.-noon on Saturdays at Millennium Park and Thursdays from 10-2 behind the chamber of commerce. Also, the Harvest Share program is now running. If you have extra produce that you're unable to use or unable to pick, or if you would like to volunteer to pick, ask about the Harvest Share program at the farmers’ market or find contact information on the Creston Valley Food Action Coalition website (www.crestonfoodaction.ca). Available at our local market now are beets, which come from the same family as Swiss chard, spinach and quinoa. Both parts of the beet are edible and very low in calories and high in fiber. The greens are high in antioxidants and vitamin A, which are good for the eyes and skin, while the

root is a good source of vitamins B3, B5, B6 and minerals, like iron, manganese and magnesium. The root is also a good source of potassium. When buying beets, be sure to choose beets that are firm and colorful, not soft and dull. Beets come in red, orange-yellow and white varieties, although red is the most common. In stores, usually the tops are removed, as the tops will draw the moisture and nutrition from the root of the vegetable. From the farmers’ market they usually come whole. Local beets are available from mid-July to December, although in the winter months they will not come with the greens attached. To store them in your fridge at home, remove the greens before storing them. The greens will only last a short time, while the root will last up to a couple weeks in the fridge in a bag. Before using the greens, be sure to rinse them well under running water to remove any dirt. They can be eaten raw, lightly steamed or sautÊed in butter. To prepare the roots, gently clean any dirt off of them. If using them raw, peel the outer skin off and cut as desired. They can also be steamed after peeling and slicing to reduce the cooking time for especially large beets. You can also cook the beets first, either by boiling until tender or roasting, and then easily remove the skin with your fingers once the beets have cooled (although this will stain your hands!). They are commonly used for their juice in detox programs. Beet juice has been proven to lower high blood pressure (although talk to your doctor before trying anything new). Beet roots are also excellent for the heart.

Beets can be enjoyed many different ways! They are delicious raw, grated over salads, pickled, thinly sliced into chips and baked until crispy or just steamed until tender, sliced and served with butter. The juice also makes a great natural food dye. Their most common use is in borscht, a delicious beet and cabbage soup.

Then, using a paring knife, remove the very top of the beet where the greens were. Using your hands, rub the skin off the beet by squeezing it gently. Remove all of the skins and then slice the beets or cut into bite-sized pieces. Divide among four plates. Sprinkle with cheese, nuts and fresh dill. Sprinkle with a small pinch of coarse salt if desired and serve either warm or room temperature. Heidi Bjarnason is a Creston Valley mom and blogger. “Hank”

Hank is a young neutered male Newfoundland/ Lab cross. He’s all black, and has a longer coat. Gentle, affectionate and still a big puppy at 83 lbs! Hank can be somewhat unsure of himself, perhaps the result of this being his 3rd home in his 1½ years. Hank would love to be with an active family who have time for lots of exercise, play - especially in water - and cuddles. He is agreeable with other dogs. Shots up to date and eager and ready to join you!

Creston rower earns four-year WSU scholarship

Who: Katrina Tarrant What: Small splashes with her oars, a big splash on the Canadian rowing scene Where: Kootenay River, Victoria, Mexico City and, soon, Washington State University When: Since she was 14 Why: “I feel like it’s where I belong.”

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

“It was phenomenal,” Katrina Tarrant says about her first day with the Creston Valley Ospreys Rowing Club. “I was definitely a little nervous but the people were so welcoming. I felt like that’s where I belonged.” That first time on the water came when she was 14. Now, four years later and about to turn 18, Tarrant has parlayed her passion for rowing into a four-year full-ride scholarship at Washington State University (WSU).

At six-foot-one and with the broad shoulders of the competitive swimmer she has been since the age of five, Tarrant’s physique and competitive nature make her a natural for a sport that requires endurance, technique and discipline. But coaching is what takes any athlete to higher levels and she credits Creston rowing guru Milan Uremovic with her rise in the sport. “I owe him my success,” she says succinctly. Tarrant says Uremovic, a former coach of Olympic-calibre and university athletes, was responsible, without her knowing at the time, for luring her into the sport. “He came to [Prince Charles Secondary] School to give a presentation about the rowing club and he noticed me,” she recalls. “He told some of the boys in the club that they should convince me to come out.” Tarrant returned last week from nine days in Mexico City, where she was part of a 25-rower Canadian team participating in the CanAmMex 2012 competition for young rowers. Rowers spent a week in training and instruction before ending with two days of racing. “I was put into sweeping, something I hadn’t practiced much,” she says, referring to rowing with one oar instead of two, which she was more used to in sculling. In her first race, with four rowers per boat, her team won by a couple of millimetres — the race was so

close the teams didn’t know who had won until they were called up to the podium for presentation of medals. Tarrant’s group of Canadian rowers bested two other teams in that race. “It was overwhelming,” she says with a smile. “My first medal in rowing and wearing a Canadian rowing suit with a maple leaf — it was wonderful!” The following day she rowed in the sweeping eights. “We went in with high expectations because we had been doing well in practice,” she says. The teammates didn’t let themselves or their coaches down. They won with six seconds of open water between

them and the runner-up, a large margin. “We had a huge group hug at the end!” To qualify for the Mexico City competition and the chance to compete against American and Mexican athletes, Canadian rowers went through a series of tests on a rowing machine designed to measure aspects of their strength and technique in two- and six-kilometre distances and a one-hour period. Tarrant ranked eighth of the 44 young women her age. “The top performers were invited to Mexico City to represent Canada,” she says. Tarrant was a competitive swimmer at the age of 5 and starred in volleyball and basketball at PCSS. Why the fasci-

nation with rowing? “I honestly can’t say exactly what I like about it, but I feel that’s where I belong,” she says. “My body might be aching and my legs might be going numb, but I never want to quit — I love it!” When she started out with the rowing club she practiced six days a week for two hours each day. That was in addition to cross-training and playing volleyball and basketball. “It’s taken up a lot of my time,” she admits, and directs the conversation back to Uremovic. “Milan is so well known in the rowing community. He says a word and everyone pays attention.” See KATRINA, page 13

Katrina Tarrant

From page 12 Uremovic’s connections in the rowing world led to the scholarship. He coached WSU coach Jane Lariviere in Calgary and Tarrant recently learned that he has been promoting her to Lariviere since she was 14. Tarrant put her rowing resume up on the Becruited.com website earlier this year and drew interest from Michigan State University and the University of California at Los Angeles, along with the University of Victoria, as well as WSU. “I visited WSU and I loved everything — the state, the campus, Cougars coach Jane Lariviere,” she says. “I’m really happy with my decision. And Jane is a Canadian who got her start in rowing in Calgary.” Attending university means keeping her marks up (her primary interest in her freshman year is zoology), rowing and living independent of her parents (PCSS principal Sharen Popoff and retired RCMP officer Don Tarrant)

for the first time. It will take some adjusting, she admits. “It will definitely involve some time management,” she says. “But I know this will lead to more opportunities to row in Canada.” Tarrant is considerably younger than most worldclass rowers, but she doesn’t deny she has her eye on the Olympics, perhaps in 2016 or 2020. “I’m really just taking the first steps — next year I’ll try out for the Canadian national junior rowing team.” Eventually she would like to become a rowing coach at the university level and to pursue studies in marine biology. In the shorter term, she hopes to return to Creston in the summers to work at the community complex and help out coaching the Ospreys. “The transition to university will be difficult, but in a good way,” she says brightly. “I’ve travelled a lot with my family. But I’m ready to leave. I want to get out and try things on my own.”

Swimming and boating are great family activities But did you know...

PFD Tips:

drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death for children under the age of 14?

• Make sure to look for a brightly coloured one. • That meets all Canadian PFD standards. • The devices are not a replacement for safe water supervision. • Adults should lead by example and wear a PFD.

Statistics reveal an estimated 44 kids drown every year in Canada, while another 130 are hospitalized as a result of near-drowning incidents. A personal flotation device (PFD) can mean the difference between life and death.

More information is available online at www.stearnsflotation.com or www.safekidscanada.ca.

DOGS IN CARS

Every year, dogs suffer and die when their guardians make the mistake of leaving them in a parked car even for “just a minute”—while they run an errand. Parked cars are deathtraps for dogs: • on a 25.5 ℃ day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to between 37.7 ℃ to 48.8 ℃ in just minutes. • on a 32.2℃ day, the interior temperature can reach as high as 71℃ in less than 10 minutes. • animals can suffer brain damage or death from heatstroke in just 15 minutes. Bananafish dance band playing at Sasquatch SUBMITTED

A large colony of yuma bats in the attic of a Kootenay house.

Bats to be counted KOOTENAY COMMUNITY BAT PROJECT

Residents of the Kootenays are counting bats to provide valuable information on bat populations. This initiative, which part of the Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) funded by Columbia Basin Trust, encourages residents to wait outside roost sites at dusk and count bats as they leave. Annual bat counts are occurring in some U.S. states to better understand impacts of white nose syndrome (WNS), a disease that is decimating bat populations in eastern North America. WNS is not yet in B.C., so there is the opportunity to collect baseline data on bat populations and how they change over time. “This event is a wonderful opportunity for residents who care about wildlife to be involved in collecting valuable information” says Juliet Craig, a registered professional biologist with Silverwing Ecological Consulting, and co-ordinating biologist for the Kootenay Community Bat Project. “They don’t need any special skills and kids can be involved.” Residents wait outside a known roost site, such as a bat house, barn, bridge or attic, and count bats as they fly out at twilight. They record the final count along with some basic information on weather conditions. Two counts are done between June 1 and 21 before pups are born, and two more between July 21 and August 15 when pups are flying with their mothers. “We know relatively little about bats including basic information on population numbers” says Craig. “This information will be extremely valuable, particularly if it is collected annually.” Of the 16 species of bats in B.C., half of them are considered vulnerable or threatened and an additional species, the little brown

myotis, has recently been assessed for federal endangered status. Information on local bat species and their roost sites is an important part of bat conservation and management. “If people want to get involved but don’t have a roost site on their property, we do our best to match them to a roost site nearby” says Craig. “We also mail out hand clickers to make counting easier.” To download annual bat count instructions and data forms, or to register for the bat count, visit www.kootenaybats.com under the “Get Involved” link or call 250-352-2260. The Kootenay Community Bat Project also provides information on safely evicting bats from buildings or identifying bat species in roost sites.

Founded in 2009, the Bananafish Dance Orchestra first met while studying jazz at Vancouver Island University. Combining the skills learned there with a love of dance music, jazz fusion, hiphop, reggae, soul and everything in between, this eight-piece ensemble is a powerhouse on stage and you’ll be guaranteed to get down and shake it on Aug. 5 at the Snoring Sasquatch. Taking influence from acts such as Lettuce, the Legendary Roots Crew, Cat Empire, 311, the Gene Krupa Big Band and even Rage Against the Machine on the nights that really matter, the band is well armed with a variety or material to keep you interested through the show. With this repertoire of music, Bananafish has been known to perform up to four hours! With this crew of talented soloists, a wealth of percussion jams and even trumpet on trumpet battles, this is not a party to be missed. Consisting of a three- or four-piece bombastic horn section up front, a groovy rhythm section laying it down in the back, and a dangerously charismatic front man, you won’t find a more exciting show around. If you want to dance, check out the Bananafish Dance Orchestra. Advance tickets are $10 at Kingfisher Used Books or Black Bear Books, or $12 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8.

This valley is extremely fortunate to be the home of many “refugees” from other parts of Canada, people who have come here because of our area’s relatively salubrious climate, natural beauty and other attractions. Once here, however, most of them have become actively engaged as full members of the community, helping to make life better for us all. Some of them, in fact, have joined long-term residents as members of the Creston Refugee Committee to help bring real refugees here, people who have had to flee their native lands to escape persecution and death. According to chair Linda Price, the committee has been operating for over 30 years. It brought Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees here in the late 1970s but it has again been particularly active during the past decade. In 2005, it played host to the six-member Samai family from Sierra Leone. Although most members of that group have moved elsewhere, the mother, Leona, and her son, Abdul, still live here.
