Labour Day soccer tourney cancelled

Prizes

A long-running annual soccer tournament has been shelved just weeks before it was set to kick off. The Langley Labour Day Michael J. Smith Soccer Tournament, which runs every Labour Day weekend, has been cancelled for 2012. “The (registration) numbers were extremely low,” said Langley FC vice-president Regan Mostat. “I think that problem is everywhere,” he said, adding he had spoken to some other tournaments who are experiencing the same problem. The Labour Day tournament’s website states they “will be re-organizing and enhancing the tournament to allow for more teams, more fields, and more exciting events to make the 2013 tournament the biggest and best Labour (Day) tournament in B.C.” Mostat said they could have pushed through with the tournament with smaller numbers, but decided against that. “At this point, the time frame was a little bit too short,” he said. “It just wasn’t going to pan out.” Last year was the 13th annual tournament and featured 61 boys and girls soccer teams playing at fields across the Langley Township. That was about half the number of teams as the previous year. At its peak it drew 240 teams. The tournament typically attracts teams from across B.C. as well as from Alberta and Washington State.

Burned warehouse held fertilizer and pesticide Township firefighters did ‘everything right’ to minimize environmental damage NATASHA JONES Times Reporter

An equipment/storage shed containing sacks of dry fertilizer and pesticide went up in flames on Tuesday evening, lighting the night sky with flames that were visible for miles around. The fire was reported at 6:20 p.m. at Coast Cranberries’ fields at 21710 Allard Cres. The building, located opposite the entrance to Derby Reach Regional Park, was destroyed. “We did everything in our power to minimize damage to the environment,” said Bruce Ferguson, who speaks for the Township’s fire department. tre, which is part of the Transport of Dangerous Goods Directorate of Transport Canada, an advisory service providing technical information during a dangerous goods emergency. According to Canutec personnel who arrived at the site “we did exactly what we had to do,” Ferguson said. That included plugging storm drains. The building loss is estimate to reach between $150,000 and $200,000. “The contents will far exceed that,” Ferguson added. The structure, made of metal cladding over wood, also destroyed equipment being stored for the construction of new buildings nearby. Neither of these was damaged. Workers were on the new building site

when the fire broke out, and they were not injured. Township investigator are working with the RCMP to probe the cause of the fire,“but at this point it doesn’t appear to be suspicious,” Ferguson said. Because there is no water in that area of northwest Langley, fire crews from several fire halls were called in to fight the blaze and provide a convoy of water tankers. Shortly after 11 p.m. that night, firefighters from Brookswood and Murrayville extinguished a fire in a building at 3430 208 St. When smouldering peat moss ignited, the flames spread to the barn. Damage is estimated at $4,000 to $5,000.

Tips pouring in on stolen wine Winery owner offers $25,000 reward MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter Black Press file photo

Drivers wait to cross the border from Canada into the U.S. According to figures released by border service officials, more Canadians are choosing to shop in Washington State, even crossing to pick up groceries and gas.

Cross border shoppers on hunt for cheaper cheese New duty schedule driving Langley residents into the United States in greater numbers MONIQUE TAMMINGA Times Reporter

Cross border shopping is on the rise, and Langley residents are among those who are taking advantage of the close proximity to the U.S. border. Many Langleyites report that they buy their gas exclusively across the line, while others do a weekly grocery shop in the U.S. to get a better price on cheese, milk and meat. Prices in the U.S. for certain items like cheese or running shoes can be up to 50 per cent cheaper than in Canada. In June, Canadian border services officers processed 581,404 travellers, which is an 18 per cent increase compared to the 475,562 travellers processed over the same period last year, said Faith St. John, Canadian Border Service Agency spokesperson.

The increase is also likely due in part to new duty free rules, implemented two months ago. As of June 1, personal exemption limits increased to $200 from $50 for absences of 24 hours or more and to $800 for absences of 48 hours or more. However, there are no personal exemptions for same day shopping trips, said St. John. Langley residents have easy access to four border crossings — at Peace Arch, Pacific Highway, Abbotsford, and Aldergrove. The increase in B.C. residents shopping in the States has been on the rise for several years, but is spiking even higher lately, also in part because of the strong Canadian dollar. The B.C. long weekend is a busy one at the borders, with Monday seeing the most traffic. Last year, 40,000 vehicles came through

the local border crossings. In total, around 130,000 vehicles crossed the border on the long weekend. It’s recommended travelers’ try to plan their return so that they arrive at the border outside peak hours. The best time to arrive is before 5:30 p.m., said CBSA. Meanwhile, in June, 596 people who tried to enter Canada were turned back at the border, including a couple of Americans with links to gangs. Last month, crossing guards made 17 weapons seizures, including two grenades at the Aldergrove crossing on June 18. Two U.S. residents travelling from Florida to Alaska were stopped and the grenades were discovered in their trailer. As a precaution, a perimeter was set up and the Lower Mainland Explosives Disposal Unit was called in. The pair withdrew their application to enter Canada.

Langley RCMP have received several tips about what could be the largest theft of wine in B.C. history. Investigators are following up on information they have received on the possible whereabouts of 5,200 bottles of Blackwood Lane wine, valued at $200,000, that were stolen from the south Langley winery on July 19. Blackwood Lane is located in the 25100 block of 8 Avenue. Owner Carlos Lee has offered a $25,000 reward for the arrest of the perpetrators. The crime, which involved stealing one tonne of his bottled wine from the secluded shop, has received plenty of attention through the media and in the industry. “To take that much wine is shocking,” Lee told The Times last week. Both Lee and police agree that the heist would have been well planned and targeted. Around the same time, someone stole 8,000 pounds of honey and half a million bees from a bee farm on the Aldergrove/Abbotsford border at 27600 block of 0 Avenue. So far there are no suspects or arrests in that case.

NATASHA JONES Times Reporter

This is the weekend that belongs to Fort Langley. It’s Brigade Days, which celebrates one of the most important events in the history of the village, and is one of the most significant for the community as a whole. The three days are an opportunity to celebrate the province’s birthplace with re-enactments, musket demonstrations, music and the traditional canoe brigade arrival at 1 p.m. on Monday. Monday, Aug. 6 is B.C. Day, and represents the climax of three days of entertainment and activities of the annual Brigade Days. The action packed weekend includes a fur trade wedding every day, tours and a fur trade game show and cook-off at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Fur Brigade will paddle to Marina Park, arriving at 1 p.m. on Monday. They will unload their cargo of furs and hear the bagpipes and black powder salute. The procession of re-enactors from the river to the Big House will be followed by a fur trade wedding. There will be an opportunity to join HBC workers, Aboriginal traders, and trappers as they swap stories, play music, and show off traditional skills. As part of Parks Canada’s 2012 Bicentennial of the War of 1812, hear the behind the scenes politics that led to Fort Langley’s establishment. On Monday evening come out for a free “Picnic in the Fort” concert and barbecue. Entertainment features the Langley Music School Fiddlers with Andrea Taylor as well as John Reischman and the Jay Birds. Admission is free on Monday evening. A visit to BC Farm Machinery

Questions you should ask about travel insurance. The summer sees more people travelling over the border, making the most of the warm weather and school vacation. It’s also the time many discover they’re under-insured when they incur steep unexpected medical expenses in a foreign country. These can, however, be easily avoided by asking a few pertinent questions before you go. Do I need travel insurance for a quick trip across the border? Accidents are just as likely to happen on a day trip as any other day at home or at work. Driving on unknown routes could potentially increase the odds. As always, it’s best to ensure you’re fully covered. Does BC Medical Services Plan cover everything? Provincial health care is unlikely to cover all of your medical expenses incurred out of province, or overseas. In fact, the Canadian government recommends that travellers purchase travel insurance when leaving the country because of the extremely high cost of medical care outside of Canada. My credit card automatically covers that, right? You may not have adequate coverage through your credit card plan. Check to ensure you have medical coverage, not

just travel accident insurance as there is a difference, and that the medical coverage meets your needs. Is my work travel insurance plan adequate for this trip? Many plans offered through employers lack certain options, like trip cancellation or interruption insurance. You can purchase these on their own to complement your company’s travel insurance. Also, some employee plans only cover the employee, so if you are travelling with your family, ask your insurance specialist about a family travel insurance plan, for both medical or trip cancellation/ interruption insurance. Do your research and ask the right questions. Visit a BCAA location and speak with an insurance specialist who will be happy to advise you, or visit bcaa.com/travelinsurance before you go and make the most of your trip.

Barely a word was spoken by Langley City council about spending $100,000 on renovating the Sendall Garden house at its July 23 meeting, but there was plenty of discussion about whether to place an additional garbage can along the trails of Nicomekl floodplain. A request by Councillor Ted Schaffer for three garbage bins to be placed in various parts of the Nicomekl floodplain trails not only warranted a two page report, it also carried with it a lengthy discussion about the trash cans. In the end, council went with staff’s recommendation to install one garbage can at the south end of the pedestrian bridge at about 206A Street, south of the Langley Community Services Building. The cost is more than $400 when labour is factored in. “I’ve been after this for five months and now here we have a report on trash cans from the CEO of the City who makes, what $140,000 a year?” said Schaffer. He said he walks the floodplain every day, which is eight to 12 kilometres. “The report on these cans

Dyson announces he will seek NDP nomination It is a long time since there was a contest to see who would represent the NDP in a provincial election in the Fort LangleyAldergrove riding. Shane Dyson has ensured that there will be a nominating meeting, after he announced his candidacy on Monday. The only other candidate so far is Gail Chaddock-Costello, president of the Langley Teachers Association. The nomination meeting will be held in November. Dyson carried the NDP banner in Fort Langley-Aldergrove in the 2005 provincial election when he received 7,600 votes, the most votes ever garnered by an NDP candidate in Fort Langley-Aldergrove. “This will be one of the most important elections in the province and we can expect to see many issues being brought forward: the HST fiasco, B.C. Rail scandal, bonuses paid to bureaucrats who cut Community Living grants, and the indecisiveness of the premier,” Dyson said. “But I want to talk about how we can make this community and the province a better place for all residents.” The Fort Langley-Aldergrove constituency encompasses a

The best of B.C.

Put pipeline to a vote

ou’re not about to read a tirade on the ever-increasing cost of living in B.C. No, this space will not be used to lament how overpaid the CEOs of ICBC and BC Ferries are or to bemoan the ridiculous pensions given to pretty much every government official. We won’t go on, ad nauseam, questioning why B.C. residents pay more than any other province for gas, insurance, housing, and pretty much everything else we need to live. Instead, this space is dedicated to all that is great about being British Columbian – in honour of the best holiday of the year – B.C. Day. Sure, we may have the worst traffic in the world and the average house in Vancouver fetches a cool $1 million, but all our complaining ends with one breath of forest-fresh air or glance at our spectacular ocean views. There’s a reason we are all willing to pay a little more to live in B.C. — it’s to be able to live a little more than the rest of the country. It may have been the slogan of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics but most of us believe that this truly is “the best place on Earth.” B.C. Day, heralds the arrival of the best month of summer in this province. Being true British Columbians, we make the most of it. We camp alongside breathtaking lakes and rivers, with skyscraping mountain views. Or we pack up the car and head to Okanagan wine country. Many of us prefer to play tourist in our own town, taking the many festivities here in – or adjacent to – the birthplace of B.C. Our unabashed indulgence in playing hard is a testament to who we are as British Columbians. We work to play – and we like it that way. Unlike our arch nemeses in Toronto, we know how to have a good time. We know how to put the smartphone down, slap on the sunscreen and not give work another thought until Tuesday rolls around. We love our seawalls, our nature trails, White Rock beach, fireworks, watersports, golfing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and don’t forget, our apres-play socializing — whether it be on a restaurant patio, beside a campfire, on a beach or at a barbecue. We are the healthiest province in the country, with the lowest cancer rates and spend the least time in front of the TV. So get out there and soak up all that sunshine this long weekend has to offer.

erhaps Premier Christy Clark sees a battle with Alberta – over revenue from allowing the Enbridge pipeline to use B.C. to link Alberta oil with tankers on the Pacific Ocean – as the last hope to rally voters in time for the spring 2013 election. It stands to reason, since the B.C. NDP has staked the opposedto-pipeline position and the B.C. Conservatives have claimed the support-with-conditions spot. However, by demanding that B.C. receive oil royalties from profits made from what flows through the pipeline, Clark is simply catering to those who already support the Enbridge proposal. Those opposed – and they include First Nations along the proposed route – have said loud and clear it is not about money, but about inevitable environmental damage. Grand Chief Edward John of the First Nations Summit political executive summed it up in a scathing press release of July 24, when he said the Clark B.C. Liberal government has missed the mark, stressing “B.C. First Nations’ traditional territories and pristine environment are not for sale.” John reminded Clark of the Supreme Court of Canada’s stance that there is a legal requirement for governments to “consult and accommodate” First Nations regarding any and all land and resource development initiatives in their respective territories. If First Nations cannot be convinced to allow a pipeline to be constructed through their territories the pipeline simply will not come to be. With Clark’s demand having been rejected by Alberta Premier Alison Redford, with First Nations still on the sidelines and with strong opposition among the public, perhaps it would be wise for Clark to add a non-binding referendum question to the May 14, 2013 general election ballot. A simple question: Are you in favour of the Enbridge pipeline proposal? — could produce results that tell the government of the day exactly which direction it should travel on this pipeline proposal. – Kamloops This Week

‘Here is your $100K study’

‘Improved’ Old Yale would be speedway Editor: I have been a resident of Murrayville for over 20 years. My dog and I walk or cycle down Old Yale Road every day. We do so because it is a more serene and generally safer road to be a pedestrian or cyclist on. I am not alone — many people walk this route. The deteriorating road condition encourages motorists to drive more slowly than they will if the road is improved. Even so, most drivers exceed the speed limit by at least 10 – 15 kilometres per hour. In addition, these same motorists generally do not slow down going through the school zone in front of the Montessori School. I would encourage the Heritage Committee of the Township, and Township Council to leave the road as it is — a bit of rural serenity amid the local highways and arterial roads that aren’t as pedestrianfriendly. If this road is ‘improved’ by repaving, I foresee a new speedway coming to Langley. Valerie Caskey Langley

Natasha JONES/Black Press

Editor: The Township of Langley is now considering spending $100,000 to study a few pot holes. This is insanity taken to a new level. The fix of Old Yale does not need study as many of the existing 87 individual concrete panels are in excellent shape. A few need to be replaced. Use the $100,000 and replace a few panels with money left over. Put removable pavers where pipes are buried. This is the executive summary of your $100,000 study. Wally Martin Langley

The poor condition of Old Yale Road in Murrayville has become a topic of discussion among residents, with writers coming down on both sides of the argument about whether to pave the historic stretch of road.

Why steal a Laughable debate over child’s bike? Old Yale Road paving

Editor: Re: Council debates future of Old Yale Road (The Times, July 24). I howled with laughter when I read the article about how Council actually sat and debated to pave or not-to-pave Old Yale Road. They yak back and forth about heritage, speeding and sticking up a slab of cement “in honour of heritage” while

driving Langley-ites scream “Just pave it!” We want a road that we can drive, that is safe, with a sidewalk for pedestrians. This isn’t hard, Township Council, but you seem to struggle endlessly with mindless issues. Sandra Steffan Langley

Editor: To the person who stole my grandson’s bike: Why? What did you need it for, to get to the next place faster so you could steal something else? Or was it just because it happened to be sitting in our front yard and you couldn’t resist stealing it? He is a seven-year-old boy who lives for his bike. He is now heartbroken and inconsolable. He doesn’t understand why someone would take something that wasn’t theirs. Eileen Hill Brookswood

Clubs’ fundraising tactics amount to begging Editor: After 35 years of living in this community, I find it is time to write in frustration and, yes, anger, about the “begging” that goes on among our young people. These are not the street, or homeless people we encounter almost daily. No, these are fine young kids and it is about them I write, and the organizations in which they are involved. They seem to choose the usual money venues, ie. the grocery store, where one would normally go to purchase the necessities of life; the drug store, (ditto) and the liquor store, wherein one could presumably find the same, if it were “for medicinal purposes only”. Here’s the rub: They congregate, en The

masse, usually in the uniform of choice, ie. the Air Cadets, Sea Cadets, hockey, soccer, baseball. Well, you name it, they are all out there, with their “cap in hand,” as it were, begging for donations to their various causes. They virtually swarm us as we go about our business, blocking access to the store, asking (loudly) if we would like to donate to the ______? Upon being turned down, however politely, they will all together say, “Thanks anyway!” I was accosted tonight at the liquor store, by a gang of young baseball players, with the same method of operation. I spoke to the manager of the store, who complained that they had been asked several times to

avoid blocking the door and harassing the customers. He went out and spoke to them again. Upon leaving, I found four of them standing in the laneway designated for cars to pass. I had to honk my horn to get them out of the way. This is nothing short of intimidation and, if I may say so, a damn poor example of what we should be teaching our young people. If they were to encounter a street person, sitting with hat in hand, begging for handouts, they would no doubt be almost programmed to see him or her as something less than a desirable human being; something to be scorned. Yet their coaches, trainers, and even their parents

see fit to send these kids out to do exactly the same thing — beg for money. Nothing is offered in exchange (except for the Boy Scouts, bless them, with their apples). It is just a handout that they seek. I strongly urge the leaders of these worthy organizations to encourage their charges to do something to earn a donation. Sell something, do something. Wash a car, mow a lawn, clean up a street, take out some old person’s trash, collect cans or bottles, I don’t care. Just don’t stand around with a hat outstretched, a glove, a boot or a skate, asking for handouts. Wayne Boylan Aldergrove

A BANNER SEASON Langley artist Deborah Strong stands in front of one of the banners raised at the end of June in downtown Langley City. Strong’s design was selected by the City’s Recreation, Culture and Public Art Advisory Committee to hang during the summer months and will be replaced by an autumnthemed design in September. The tents are meant to symbolize the many festivals that take place in Langley City each year, not one specific event, explained the artist. The red and gold flags atop the tents, represent the city’s official colours, while the flowers call to mind the City’s many blooms, whether in baskets, beds, gardens or parks. Great Painters Challenge at Birthplace of B.C. Gallery MONIQUE TAMMINGA

tired

Times Reporter

On your marks, get set . . . paint. Easels will be loaded with blank canvasses at high noon. At the sound of the starting pistol, brushes will be drawn and painting will begin for the Great Painters Challenge. It will all go down on Sunday, Aug. 5 in the beautiful gardens at the Birthplace of B.C. Gallery in Fort Langley. In total, 13 well-known B.C. artists, many residents of the Fort, will compete for the HSBC gold, silver and bronze medals. The artists will have only until 3 p.m. to complete their masterpieces, and the short time frame can be a challenge. “Some of the artists have been practising,” said Birthplace of B.C. Gallery co-owner Kurt Alberts. “Some are used to painting plein air, but it’s not easy to complete a piece of art in three hours. “Painters like Alan Wylie use tiny brushes while an artist like Brent Heighton has an easier time because he uses big brushes.” Participating artists include Wylie, Heighton, Allan Hancock, Amanda Jones, Carmel Claire,

Painter Amanda Jones is one of 13 artists who will be going for gold during the annual Great Painters Challenge in Fort Langley on Sunday. Dianna Ponting, Heidi Lambert, Jack Turpin, Janice Robertson, Joyce Trygg, Linda Muttitt, Lyle Longstaff and Perry Haddock. All the paintings will be framed at 3 p.m. and hung in the Pine Room of the Birthplace Gallery where they will be judged. A jury of 10 art collectors will select the top three painting at 4 p.m. and present the artist with the medals. But the public is being asked to pick their favourite, too, for the “People’s Choice” category. “This is our way of celebrating B.C. Day here at the Birthplace of B.C. Gallery, in Fort Langley which is the Birthplace of

B.C.,” said gallery owner Brenda Alberts. There are no rules for the competition, only that each artist must start with a blank canvas. There aren’t any themes. Artists can paint whatever catches their eye and they are welcome to paint from a photograph they bring, said Alberts. “They are welcome to paint the garden or anything they wish,” said Alberts. Hard Times Blue Grass Band will perform from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Other artists will be doing demonstrations in the garden at the same time and on Monday as well.

ormer Langley resident Nigel Holmes, secretary treasurer of Harness Racing BC (HRBC) and long-time Standardbred owner, says the beleaguered industry is slowly winning the race to survive, despite the odds. HRBC represents the harness racing industry, which employs around 6,000 people in B.C. In recent years, the industry has had to cope with a dwindling number of race days at Fraser Downs, the exodus of breeders leaving B.C. for greener pastures, and public and government indifference to the sport, and to the fate of the people and horses who depend upon it. The introduction of slot machines at the track, hyped as a boon for the racing industry, seemed to herald its death-knell instead when gaming revenues failed to materialize and the racing season grew shorter. “For a while, our industry had a defeatist attitude. Now there is reason for cautious optimism in a business that has been slapped around a lot,” said Holmes. Owners, breeders, drivers and trainers are working together modernize an industry resistant to change and becoming more politically active. HRBC’s reorganization started at the top, with the appointment of former Surrey mayor Doug McCallum as CEO two years ago. “Doug is politically astute, forceful, and is an excellent media spokesman for us,” said Holmes. The new voice of an old industry has been heard in Victoria. The political tides seem to be turning in favour of harness racing. Holmes says the provincial government is showing support for what it sees as a B.C.-based, agricultural business in the form of financial incentives the industry needs to survive.

Diesel truck pollution to be probed by special sensors moving forward.” Emissions of soot, or fine diesel particulate, are estimated to be responsible for two-thirds of the lifetime cancer risk from air pollution in Metro Vancouver. Metro Vancouver, which is responsible for air quality in the region, has also begun a non-road diesel emission reduction program, which charges fees on older heavily polluting machinery, such as excavators and forklifts, while offering owners incentives to upgrade or replace them. “Now it’s time to find ways to reduce emissions from onroad vehicles too,” said Metro environment committee chair Heather Deal. “These trucks and buses travel through our communities, close to places where we live, work and play.” The province is a partner with Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley Regional District and Port Metro Vancouver in the new roadside emission test program, slated to cost $130,000.

Tests gauging emissions ahead of AirCare shift JEFF NAGEL Black Press

A specialized roadside system will test diesel pollution from trucks, buses and other heavy-duty vehicles over the next three months to help guide future initiatives to curb emissions. Infrared and ultraviolet beams from a parked test trailer pass through the exhaust plume of heavy trucks as they pass and data is read by a detector across the road. The province’s AirCare program is slated to be dismantled for regular vehicles by the end of 2014, but the government held out the possibility it may be replaced by a bolstered program targeting truck pollution, which currently is subject to only mobile tests through the AirCare On Road program.

Tests are conducted to gauge pollution from trucks and other heavy-duty diesel vehicles as they roll by. “This study is a good first step to help us gain better understanding of diesel emissions from the transportation sector in the Lower Mainland, and is consistent with AirCare

commitments made by the province,” Environment Minister Terry Lake said. “The results will help us develop options for reducing diesel emissions in the region

Farm market approved for expansion Ralph’s Farm Market granted permit to build new 13,900 square foot building NATASHA JONES Times Reporter

A busy farm market has opted to build a brand new facility rather than expand by constructing an addition as initially planned. At a public hearing last month,Township council approved a development permit that will allow Ralph’s Farm Market to build a 13,900 square foot building immediately east of its existing store at 22728 Fraser Hwy. The new building will include a 600 square

foot caretaker’s suite, and will replace all existing structures and canopies on the site. It will be business as usual during construction, said Elizabeth Merk who owns the market with her husband, Ralph. The development permit, which is a prerequisite for a building permit, gives council the opportunity to review the form, character and siting of the proposed building. A report indicates that the structure will be clad with horizontal and

vertical board and batten hardie plank siding, and vertical pre-finished metal wall cladding in a red-brown colour with ivory wood trim, and timber and black metal accents. The report notes, too, that the parking lot, which has space for 69 vehicles, will not be affected by the changes. The existing building will be demolished, and in order to meet the Township’s tree protection and replacement policy, the company will be required to plant 26 trees on that site.

The business has expanded more than once since it opened more than 20 years ago, including a grocery section to augment the fruit and produce sections. However, just how much of the building is devoted to grocery and sundry items is limited by the zoning. Rural farm markets not located in the Agricultural Land Reserve may sell produce grown on and off the property, but the area used for the sale of grocery and sundry items cannot exceed 10 per cent of the gross floor area of the farm market building. Approximately 0.14 acres of the site is within the ALR.

Miranda GATHERCOLE/Langley Times

Ralph’s Farm Market has received permission to build a new farm market behind the existing structure, which will eventually be dismantled.

BYOB is now here — Coleman Patrons can bring their own bottle of wine to participating restaurants

Rich Coleman chose one of Langley’s most successful restaurant enterprises to announce a major change in government policy towards wine. In a recent announcement at The Keg, Coleman said that B.C. residents can now bring their own bottle of wine into participating restaurants, and enjoy it with their meals. “We want to provide our restaurant industry with greater flexibility in terms of the services it can offer to its customers,” said Coleman. “Today’s change does just that — it allows customers to pair their favourite wine with their favourite restaurant.” Patrons will be required to have the wine served in the same manner as wine selected from the menu, and restaurants will be allowed to charge a corkage fee for this service.

“The government continues to introduce common-sense solutions such as the Bring Your Own Wine program. This gives industry the needed flexibility to get people out and dine more,” said Ian Tostenson, president and CEO of the B.C. Restaurant and Food Service Association. “More business will result in positive economic impacts such as increased employment and downstream benefits to suppliers of the industry. “This is a very innovative, flexible and common-sense policy.” The change is also supported by the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association. Participation in this service by licensed restaurants is voluntary. “Restaurateurs, especially those with limited wine

inventories, welcome the option of allowing their guests to bring their own wine,” said Mark von Schellwitz, vice president of Western Canada for the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association. “This liquor policy change allows those restaurant guests who want to celebrate a special event by bringing a vintage bottle of wine from their own cellar to their favourite restaurant to do so.” Licensees are still liable if patrons are over-served or liquor service is provided to minors. As in other provinces, there are no plans to broaden this beyond wine to include beer and spirits. “By allowing people to bring their own bottle of wine into their favourite dining establishment, we’ve provided restaurant owners with a great opportunity to create a new type of dining experience that will further promote our wonderful restaurants here in British Columbia,” Coleman said.

Thunder avenge 2010 defeat GARY AHUJA Times Sports

It was payback time for the Langley Thunder and they made sure to deliver. Two years ago, at the peewee A1 provincial box lacrosse championships, the Coquitlam Adanacs ended the Thunder’s B.C. championship hopes in the round robin. The sting of that defeat lingered for a long time, and finally, this past weekend, Langley exacted revenge. Playing at the B.C. bantam A1 provincial lacrosse championships in Burnaby, the Thunder defeated Coquitlam 5-4 in the gold medal game. “A huge win for us; it is awesome,” said Langley coach Tom Johnson. Johnson has coached this particular group of players every second year since they were at the novice level. And that loss at the peewee provincials has a lasting effect on the players. “The whole year we had a goal to make provincials and get Coquitlam back for knocking us out two years ago,” Johnson said. “At the first practice of the year, we sat down and said we are here for one reason: to win gold at provincials.” The tournament got off to a rough start for the Thunder as they dropped their opener, 7-6 to Coquitlam. “But we knew we could do it,” Johnson said. Langley bounced back to defeat Burnaby 11-5 and then defeated Ridge Meadows 5-2. They closed the round robin with a 6-3 win over Juan de Fuca and then shutout New Westminster 6-0. In the semifinals, the Thunder doubled New Westminster 6-3 to earn a spot in the continued, PAGE 29

Aaron Horansksi has had a spectacular season both in the field and at the plate for the Langley Blaze U18 baseball club. Horanski led the B.C. Premier Baseball League in both batting average (.416) and runs scored (50). He is joining the UBC Thunderbirds baseball program next season.

‘Mad Dog’ has bite to his game Aaron Horanski may have been an afterthought, but he turned into quite a find for the Langley Blaze GARY AHUJA Times Sports

There was no hype surrounding Aaron Horanski’s arrival. Looking for players to fill out the roster for the 2012 season, Langley Blaze coach Jamie Bodaly mentioned to a fellow coach and friend back in Manitoba if he might know of any potential players. The coach told Bodaly he knew of a kid who worked hard, was an OK player, but not the greatest of hitters. The level of baseball he played at back home in Manitoba would be equivalent to house level. The kid was athletic, so Bodaly said he would take a look, figuring the player could provide depth. “I figured he could be an outfielder, a bench guy for us

Horanski also had suitors south of the border from chose UBC in part for their academic reputation. “I worked really hard to balance both school and sport,” he said. “You have to have good time management.” Horanski graduated from his high school back home — he took his final

And as for the ‘Mad Dog’ moniker which his teammates labeled on him, Horanski admits it may be true. “On the field, I am very serious and focused on playing to the best of my abilities,” he said. “When I go out there, I expect to play my best and win. “But off the field, I am very outgoing, and very open to meeting people.”

Last year ended in a loss in the championship game for the Langley Rams and coach Jeff Alamolhoda vows the team will use that experience to better themselves. “That game itself was a real learning process for us as a team, understanding what it is going to take not only to win the provincial title, but also the type of caliber of football that goes on in the playoffs, he said. “We were all left with a pretty bitter taste in our mouths. The Rams, playing their first season at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park after a long and storied history in Surrey, lost in the B.C. Junior Football Conference championship game 44-0 to the Vancouver Island Raiders. The Raiders won their sixth consecutive BCFC title. Alamolhoda said the team can learn from the dominant programs about what it takes to get to that level. “(The players) have come to work, he said. “And that is what we have emphasized

— punching the clock and going to work because we understand every day is going to count. “The season is a process and we need to build within that process. Last season, Langley started slowly, not picking up their first win of the season until week four but won five of their next seven games to finish 5-5. The Rams went 2-0 in the preseason, defeating the Westshore Rebels 35-30 and the Chilliwack Huskers 70-0. They open the season on Saturday (Aug. 4) in Kelowna against the Okanagan Sun. Langley defeated the Sun in last season’s semifinals. “We have to work real hard to accomplish the goals we have set for ourselves, Alamolhoda said. The defence, under new co-ordinator Khari Joseph, has shown signs of being a swarming, attacking D. “We want 12 hats on the football at all times, Alamolhoda said, noting that is something the team did not consistently do in 2011. “It is showing already. I know if we continue working on it through the season, we will get to where we need to be. On offence, new quarterback Greg

Bowcott takes the helm. Bowcott, who most recently played for the SFU Clan, is sixfoot-four with great athletic ability and arm strength, and should make the Rams even more dangerous offensively. Jon Roney, who also saw action in 2011, gives the Rams one of

the top quarterbacking tandems in the league. The offence boasts depth and lots of playmakers, both in the backfield and in the receiving corps. “We want to see big plays out of our playmakers, Alamolhoda said. “We need to get the ball in their hands and let them showcase what

they can do. “When they get the ball, they are going to make plays. One of the returning playmakers is Nick Downey who finished with 15 total touchdowns last season. He was also named the top kick returner in Canada for the third straight season.

league lead with 34 RBIs. Jordan Atkinson picked up the win, pitching the final five innings, allowing just one unearned run on two hits while striking out eight. Langley (358), which has clinched the best record in the league, closes the regular season today (Thursday) when they host the North Shore Junior Twins at McLeod Park. Game time is 3 p.m. Over the weekend, Langley swept their doubleheader against the White Rock Junior Tritons on

Sunday at South Surrey Athletic Park. The Blaze won the opener 8-7 in extra innings with Matthew Reston’s single in the eighth inning scoring Colin McMaster. Mitchell Kennedy delivered a one-two-three eighth inning for the victory. Game two was a blowout as the Blaze hammered the Tritons 18-2. Justin Lawrence led the offence with three hits and three RBIs, while Pelletier and Steven Young drove in a pair apiece. Kyle Ross earned the win allowing just a pair of base hits. over five innings.

championship. The Thunder trailed for most of the game as Coquitlam led 3-1 and 4-2 at the intermissions. A big problem in the opening 40 minutes was penalty trouble as Langley was shorthanded eight times. But the penalty killers kept the damage minimal, including killing off a pair of 5-on-3 advantages. That set the stage for an epic third period.

“We stayed disciplined and stuck to the game plan,” Johnson said. “We got lots of shots and executed the plays and played tough, hardnosed lacrosse.” The Thunder drew a couple of power plays of their own in the third. “Our power play has been lethal all year,” Johnson said.“We made some adjustments and we buried on two of our power plays.” Langley scored the winning goal late in regulation.

Christian Bosa earned game MVP honours while goaltender Roman Rose was named provincial MVP. “When (Roman) is on, he is awesome,” the coach said. “And our defence was phenomenal. We have a couple of studs who are going to be amazing players at a high level one day. “They locked down (Coquitlam’s) star players.” Caleb Peadson earned the Warrior

Fair Play Award while Rose was named to the tournament all-star team. ••••• Langley also had a team at the bantam C provincial tournament in Burnaby. The Thunder went 0-3, losing 9-2 to Campbell River, 8-0 to Kelowna and 7-5 to Burnaby. Austin Gola earned the Warrior Fair Play Award for Langley while teammate Adam Hannesson was named to the all-star team.

The Aldergrove Minor Baseball Association (AMBA) hosts the B.C. Minor Baseball Bantam AA provincial tournament beginning today and running until Aug. 5. Ten teams from across the province, consisting of about 125 athletes aged 13 to 15, will compete at the event. Organizers anticipate that more than 250 spectators will attend the tournament, which includes teams from communities such as Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Cloverdale and Vancouver. The host team is the LangleyAldergrove Dodgers, which wrapped up a successful spring season by capturing the Lower Mainland Tier 2 Bantam AA Championship. The event takes place at Aldergrove Athletic Park, 26715 27 Ave.

Ludwig 34th at Games GARY AHUJA Times Sports

Langley’s Dorothy Ludwig finished 34th in the women’s 10-metre air pistol competition at the Olympic Games in London. Ludwig posted a total score of 376 in the qualification round on Sunday but failed to advance to the final. China’s Guo Wenjun earned the gold with a score of 488.1 while France’s Celine Goberville took silver and Ukraine’s Olena Kostevych won bronze.

“I shot well, but not well enough,” Ludwig said via Facebook to The Times. “(But) I am happy with my performance and have immersed myself in the Olympic experience.” The 33-year-old Ludwig was making her Olympic debut. She earned Canada a spot in the event after winning gold at the Pan American Games in Mexico back in October. Dorothy She then defeated her Ludwig sister, Lynda Kiejko, and Lea Wachowich at the Canadian trials in March to win the right to represent Canada.

Tyler Koslowsky has been named to the Canadian junior national men’s volleyball team. Koslowsky, a libero, cracked the roster following an impressive performance last month playing for Team B.C. Red at the National Team Challenge Cup in Gatineau, Que. He’ll now train at the National Training Centre in Gatineau in preparation for the NORCECA Junior Championship,

which runs Aug. 24 to Sept. 2 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Koslowsky’s ascension to the junior national squad is all the more remarkable considering he only began playing the libero position full-time last season, his first with the Trinity Western Spartans. He’d previously been a setter with Abbotsford’s MEI Eagles. “We believed he would develop into one

of the nation’s premier libero players by the end of his career,” said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. “But we didn’t think he would, in just a year and a half of playing the position, establish himself as a premier libero in his age class nationally. “I believe he has accomplished this with a tireless work ethic and a pursuit of technical perfection in his craft.”

CAR CARE & REPAIR SLS AMG + 178MPH GOLF BALL = WORLDS FARTHEST GOLF SHOT CAUGHT IN A MOVING CAR

Formula 1 legend and DTM driver David Coulthard and professional golfer Jake Shepherd set a Guinness World Record May 30 at Dunsfold Aerodrome, Surrey, as part of a viral film for Mercedes-Benz. Coulthard, who was driving a 571 hp MercedesBenz SLS AMG Roadster at 120 mph, caught a golf ball in the cockpit of the moving car which was 275 metres from the tee, and hit by Jake at an astonishing 178 mph. This amazing achievement secured the world record for the furthest golf shot caught in a moving car in only the second attempt of the day. The outstanding feat of skill was captured on film and will be launched in early July to celebrate the power of the SLS AMG Roadster which, thanks to its AMG hand-assembled

M 159 V8 engine, rockets to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. David Coulthard said, "This world record attempt is definitely one of the most unusual things I've ever been asked to do with a car! Jake Shepherd was great to work with and the performance of the SLS AMG Roadster made driving to catch a mid-air golf ball even more exciting."
