News Trail veteran wins pension battle TIMOTHY SCHAFER West Kootenay Advertiser

The battle has been won for a Trail army veteran after he received word from Veteran’s Affairs about obtaining full pension and benefits after a Trail Daily Times story brought his plight to light. When a story on Dolan Magrath was first published in late April, the 47-year-old third generation army man had been at his wit’s end fighting to secure enough of a pension for his family before his ailing body—injured while serving in the Army for 10 years—gave out. Magrath had been clashing with government officials for 15 years since he was given a medical discharge from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1997. When he brought his story to the Daily Times he had also been

preparing to meet with Alex Atamanenko, the region’s Member of Parliament. “I challenged the system for many years before I got my battle ironed out, two weeks after the article came out,” he said. Magrath received confirmation of full pension and benefits from Veteran’s Affairs in a letter, without an explanation of why they had taken so long to do so. Atamanenko, who had been working “behind the scenes” to remedy Magrath’s situation, cautioned him not to seek an apology. Initially, Magrath sought an apology for the 1992 incident in which he was injured. “(Atamanenko) said it’s more important that I got benefits … instead of the government admitting wrong doing,” he said. “That would be a bigger fish

to catch.” Atamanenko took Magrath’s case up with the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Veteran’s

Affairs in early May. For years the Department of Veterans Affairs has been Continued from P. 1

News Christina Lake couple die in tubing accident Grand Forks briefs

Cascade claim three

Falls

Christina Lake residents Ronald (74) and Jacqueline Jean Legare (71) are dead after a tubing accident on Cascade Falls, on the Kettle River on Saturday afternoon. A resident of Scotland, 50, who was visiting the area, is still missing and presumed dead but his name has

not yet been released by the B.C. Corners Service. “What’s happened now, is basically our air search of the river, right down to the U.S. border, turned up negatively. I ran it with the pilot about five times and (the body) is definitely not in the river, Grand Forks RCMP’s Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison told the Grand Forks Gazette on Monday. “We’re quite con-

vinced at this point that the body’s trapped in the falls. Our experience in the past has been that the bodies resurface after a couple of days or anywhere up to a week. We’ll be maintaining a vigil on the falls to see if, in fact, that does occur and we’ll recover the body, he said. BMX provincial championships go on despite July 20 wind

Nelson and Rossland tokens fetch crazy prices

This coin, from A.G. Gelinas store of Nelson, fetched $132.50 on eBay Submitted photo recently. West Kootenay Advertiser

Latest in a series about transactions on eBay involving Kootenay collectibles. Three brass trade tokens from Rossland sold last week for prices that were, in our estimation, crazy. They weren’t especially rare and in previous auctions didn’t command anywhere near as much. Chief among them was one from tobacconist S.B. Shaw that went for $146.50 US. At least seven others from this business have sold online since 2004 for $17 to

$53. The front says “S.B. Shaw/Smokers’ Supplies/Rossland, B.C.” and the back “6¼,” as in cents. According to Leslie C. Hill’s British Columbia Numismatica, the bible of BC trade tokens, Stephen Brown Shaw was listed as a tobacconist at 2 East Columbia Avenue in 1899-1900. Meanwhile, a token from Rossland’s Queen Cigar Store sold for $122. On the front is “Queen Cigar Store/Columbia Ave” and on the back “Crow & Morris/ Rossland, B.C.” At least 23 of these

tokens in several variations have appeared since 2001, and sold for up to $76.50. A few however, failed to sell at all, even when bundled with a couple of other Rossland tokens. As of 1903, Max Crow and Joe Morris ran the Queen Cigar Store at 13 East Columbia, which was part of the Clarendon Hotel. Speaking of which, a Clarendon token, “Good for 6 1/4¢ in trade at bar,” also sold for $122. This one has popped up four times before since 2002, but never netted more than $26. According to Hill’s

saloon on its Flickr stream. Finally, a brass token from Frank A. Tamblyn, “Good for 5¢ in trade,” went for $66 Cdn. According to Hill, Tamblyn was manager of the Nelson Wine Co. until 1904 and also operated the Nelson Cafe, which is where the tokens were likely used. He later tended bar aboard the SS Moyie. See more pictures of the above-mentioned tokens at nelsonstar.com.

book, Gus Wassholm was the hotel’s proprietor in 1897. The following year, the David Morgan Co. managed the Clarendon Hotels in both Greenwood and Rossland. Separate tokens exist for both towns, and there’s also one that was likely good at either establishment. Three Nelson tokens that have never before appeared on eBay nabbed high prices last week as well. One from A.G. Gelinas, “Good for 5¢ in trade,” went for $132.50 Cdn. According to Hill, Gelinas took over the Semaphore cigar store sometime prior to 1918 and was still in business in 1959 with a billiard parlour and confectionary. As of 1980, only six to ten of these tokens were known to exist. An equally rare token from the Silver King Hotel went for $114 Cdn. Built for Johnson and Mahoney at 488 Baker Street, it was apparently the site of Nelson’s first wedding: on November 5, 1891, Angus McIntyre married Ida Johnson. The Silver King was torn down in 1944. Touchstones Nelson has a photo of its

Rossland pool celebrates 80th birthday ARNE PETRYSHEN West Kootenay Advertiser

Rossland is a city full of history. Thoughts of Rossland’s heritage quickly turn to mining and skiing, but there is another aspect of Rossland that meets historical significance. That would be the Rossland pool. The outdoor pool turns 80 years old this year, making it one of the oldest pools in the province. To celebrate, Rossland Recreation will

be putting on a birthday celebration for the pool this month. There is already a YouTube video that highlights the pool, just search for “Rossland Pool 80th birthday” and you should find it on youtube.com. The video has a fascinating array of photos from the past and videos from the present. It documents the changes to the pool over the years, from the first concrete being poured in 1932 to renovations in 1970,

all the way up to the programs the pool currently offers. Robin Hethey, from Rossland Recreation, suspects the pool is one of the oldest in the province, that is still operating. She noted that while there are earlier documented pools in Vancouver, they were just holding tanks for the ocean. These pools were large concrete walls built right into the ocean that held in the people and held out marine wildlife. These

pools were only built one year before Rossland’s pool, in 1931, according to Hethey. Rossland’s pool also had the distinction of having luxuries like circulation, heating and disinfectants from the get-go, where ocean pools did not. Construction on the pool began in spring 1932 and completed on Aug. 7. That makes the 80 year anniversary for the pool next Wednesday. In the 1970s the pool had to have a

major renovation due to changes in the provincial Health Act. This could have been the end of the pool, but Rossland residence and organizations banded together to raise the $40,000 that was needed. The recreation department is hoping to find other pools that may rival Rossland’s in age, so if you know of any, email the Rossland News at reporter@ rosslandnews.com or Hethey at recreation@ rossland.ca.

Despite a petition of over 800 names pushing for increased service at Trail Regional Airport, the facility’s only carrier says it won’t be increasing the reach of its flights out of the Silver City. Spencer Smith, vice president of commercial services for Pacific Coastal Airlines, said the 809-name petition delivered July 16 to council asking for expanded service from Trail Regional Airport to Calgary

or Kelowna has some merit. But he ruled out the chance of the Lower Mainland-based aviation company from connecting to Calgary, hinting that Kelowna is in the crosshairs— but down the road. “Operationally and structurally we just don’t have the means to support that quite yet,” he said. “We just don’t have the planes.” Smith noted that the cost to fly into Calgary would be higher than they were willing to foot at this point, plus their access would be convoluted and inconve-

nient, having to use the executive class area of the airport in the industrial portion of the airport. He also pointed to the service up the road in Castlegar with Air Canada, and potentially WestJet, that would nullify any regional advantage they may have. “It’s a big diversion to our network, having to go to Calgary,” Smith said. But Kelowna would not. Smith said the Okanagan city destination was a possibility, since it would connect in well with their existing network. “It’s something that

Magrath’s stems from an incident that occurred in Cyprus while serving as a gunner reservist with the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery on a peacekeeping mission in 1992. He hurt his back but the armed forces denied the severity of the injury—which left Magrath unable to work in his 40s—and his right to a livable pension.

Notice of the change was delivered to the 85 employees at the Trail location— and 6,400 people nationwide—Thursday morning, but no indication was given as to the future of the Trail franchise. “We’re looking at options right now,” said Bourre when contacted by the Trail Daily Times. While no firm date has been given for any of the closures, Bourre said the stores won’t be open beyond next March, 2013.

Horoscope

ffor th the

Week

August A u 3, 2012

Tip of the Week: We are at the mid-point in the season and Mercury is about to turn direct after it’s tri-annual 3 week retreat. Planets do not actually stop in their tracks and actually go backwards, yet they appear to do so. The linear fact is the planets maintain one motion around the Sun just as they ever have. However, the experiential reality is that the planets do in fact appear to slow down to an eventual full stop and then begin to move backward for a while, only to slow down and stop again and then resume their ‘normal’ course. Astrologers have long noticed effects both in outer events and perhaps especially psychologically in people. This aspect of Astrology has evolved especially in Western Astrology which has and continues to increasingly lean towards a psychological and spiritual evolutionary principle. The event oriented focus is the more traditional aspect, though Astrologers in all systems have always recognized a purposeful process behind the overall pattern or planetary movements. To truly appreciate this one has to step back from the particle perspective of isolated events, and appreciate the waves, or larger trends and patterns.

Michael O’Connor

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

As the heat rises the tempo is increasing. Efforts to remain focused are a consequence and may manifest as controlling tendencies. At best, it will ignite creative inspirations yet you will still feel the impulse to ‘direct the show’. Your sense of individuality is likely running high activating rebellious attitudes. Communicate your needs for room or freedom, lest elbows fly.

You are on a creative roll; ‘steamroller’ might be a good description. You feel determined and perhaps compelled to cover a lot of ground. Mixing social activity with work is ideal, yet work will likely come before pleasure this time. With creativity woven in you will feel happy anyway. Covering a lot of ground on the fly will require flexibility in your plans.

Expressing a fuller measure of your individuality will feel strong now. Increased self-reliance is implied. You may be encountering unique people and some real characters too. They are destined to help you stand your ground more firmly and not lean or hold undue expectations. You may feel more friendly and/or impersonal than romantic; if so flow with it.

Desires to be seen and heard are running high now. Yet, feeling as confident as you like may be an issue. Also, the lines of communication and action may be more like a zigzag than anything direct. At best you feel innovative. A search for excitement implies breaking free from anything mundane. Use this opportunity to try something new and/or venture where you have not before.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

A dynamic cycle is underway for you. Mercury Rx aside, you are in a good position to advance your position somehow. You’re already creative proclivities are rising. A willingness to take risks and to experience and at least sample new prospects is important. The biggest challenge will be overcoming tendencies to take on too much and scatter your focus.

The urge to break free somehow continues. You may feel increasingly less inclined to share your thoughts and feelings, for now anyway. Yet, your scope of connections stands to be increasing. These are likely to prove beneficial and pleasing and even have a future. If you are yearning for companionship or partnership you’re chances are very good now so reach out.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

Establishing new foundations implies investment of some kind. It is important that you be willing to give to situations more fully now. You may not feel as confident as you like and this feeling may remain until this time next year. That is probably far too long to wait so you are challenged to ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’ again…

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

Purging and clearing the way is a likely focus now, as is identifying and accessing the gifts, talents and resources of others. To succeed however, you must be willing to give more than you might normally. Doing so could make you nervous, however. At least be willing to negotiate a very fair deal and be the first to demonstrate commitment.

The Sun in your sign suggest that this is a time for deliberate initiative. Your focus stands to be sharper than usual, believe it or not, thanks to Mercury Rx also in your sign. However, this will soon change so take a lead now and at least initiate things. Your focus may be less sharp for the next few weeks but as long as you have activated leads to work on you should feel productive.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

Getting a lot done behind the scenes is the call now. This may well include nurturing creative possibilities. It is out of such cycles that some of our most creative and imaginative ideas and visions can emerge. It may be more a time to conceive than weave the dreams, however. So be ready with your sketch pad or whatever you require to draft big ideas and plans.

A lively if hectic and even somewhat crazy time on relationship fronts is likely now. Amidst an otherwise satisfying series of exchanges, you may have to contend with the fixed attitudes, opinions and behaviour patters of others. You’re challenge is to maintain a diplomatic stance where the equation is tilted to at least 51% in favour of you assuming a creative lead.

A process of increasing your confidence levels continues. Elevating health levels implies more knowledge and disciplined follow-through. This focus on health may be directed towards the quality of your work or services rendered as well as that of your overall constitution. Your keys to confidence now include better health and more efficiency.

Sculpture Talk

Welcome to our new regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.

‘Man in Motion (bronze)

Nelson sculptor Denis Kleine returns to Sculpturewalk for a third straight year, exhibiting his stylistic dexterity once again. Winner of the coveted People’s Choice award in the inaugural event with ‘Peace Sign’, he combined bronze and onyx in last year’s ‘Dawn’. Comfortable and proficient with different base materials – bronze, stone, marble, snow and sand – he again impresses with a beautiful bronze abstract this year. ‘Man in Motion’ differs from his previous entries though the medium is the same. Where ‘Peace Sign’ was slender and ‘Dawn’ was figurative, this year’s sculpture is blocky and bulky, all strong lines and heft. The motion aspect of the sculpture is emphasized through lines that fall back on each other, the forward knee anchoring the multiple lines in the upper torso and arms. It is a beautiful sculpture - full of movement and life realized in abstraction. The sculpture is partly inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s famous controversial painting, Nude Descending a Staircase No. 2. “That and strobe photography,” Kleine readily acknowledges. “I’ve tried to capture the kinetic, mechanistic movement Duchamp achieved in his seminal canvas. Through the enveloping layers – kind of like frames of a stop motion picture – I

convey motion and movement. Of course, the detail can’t be emulated but that isn’t necessary as the overall intent is attained in a totally different way, and medium. ” Kleine certainly excels in all of them. He works in stone and bronze primarily, but is also an award-winning team member in snow, ice and sand sculpture competitions around the world. “They are quite different of course, not just the material but also the individual versus working collectively aspect. I like the variation, but always gravitate back to stone

and bronze. “Transforming their cold, hard rawness into something warm and attractive is hugely rewarding,” he says. “Both of them present physical and mental challenges, but, especially with stone, the transition from a block to a finished piece is invigorating. The repetition of strong lines and surface planes enhance the beauty of the stone, bringing the piece to life. That’s the enchantment of sculpture summed up right there,” he laughs. Like many artists, he imparts his

knowledge and skill teaching parttime. “Sharing my experience and instilling technique is a real pleasure when students are eager to learn,” he notes. When taught by the talented Mr. Kleine, there is no doubt his Kootenay School of the Art students pay rapt attention.
