The city’s withdrawal of an offer to provide sewer services to homes south of the city limits is “disappointing” but not unexpected, according to Strathcona Regional District Director Brenda Leigh. “Clearly, it does not have the capacity to extend us this service and it’s great that they are finally able to admit this so that the region can move on with its own plans,” said Leigh, director representing Area D (Ocean Grove to Oyster River). “In one way, I am relieved that Campbell River is withdrawing itself from the project.” Continued on Page 5

Cup coming to McNeill W h o ’s t r ave l l i n g north to see the Stanley Cup? There will be more than a few Campbell River hockey fans making the two-and-ahalf-hour drive to see Willie Mitchell bring the hallowed Cup to his hometown of Port McNeill. Big Willie and Stanley make their grand
appearance on Sunday, Aug. 12, 10:30 a.m. at the Port McNeill Arena (aka Chilton Regional Arena). It’s Mitchell’s first Stanley Cup championship as the burly veteran defenceman – you think the Canucks miss him now? – was a key member of the Los Angeles Kings which defeated the
New Jersey Devils in six games. “The town council has declared August 12, 2012 as Willie Mitchell Day and has unanimously voted to confer the status of Freeman on its most famous son,” said long-time Mayor Gerry Furney. “All are invited to join us in celebrating his achievements.”
Strikers target Forest office Government employees will picket in Campbell River on Tuesday. On Thursday, the B.C. Government Employees Union issued strike notice with the

In spite of budget cuts, dandelions are doing great! Don’t expect to see any flowers this year in front of city’s weedy entrance way KRISTEN DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
T h e We l c o m e t o Campbell River sign at Jubilee Parkway and Island Highway will remain bare of flowers this summer. Gone are the colourful annuals that used to bloom in the garden patch below the big grey sign. Weeds and tall grass grow there now. One resident said that’s not sending a good message to tourists driving into the city. “It’s so embarrassing, said Campbell
River’s Lynn Michaluk. “The dandelions are taller than the grasses, it’s disgusting. It just looks so awful. We want to project that Campbell River is a beautiful community to live in (which it is) and welcome people to move here, and this is what they see as they drive in? Esther Kowalko, who moved to Campbell River two years ago, said, “the weed patch under the CR welcome sign is sad. Those include cleaning up the vegetation around the sign, getting rid of the weeds and cutting the grass lower down to the ground. “Under the circumstances, and the budget being the way it was, it was the best we could hope for at this time of year, Directors ask for mediator Sewers: City backs out KRISTEN DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The Strathcona Regional District wants the B.C. government to bring in a mediator to help settle the pole peeler plant dispute. Directors voted at a board meeting last Thursday to write a letter to the Minister of Community, Sport, and Culture, requesting a mediator to address the documented problems of the pole peeler on Duncan Bay Road and its impact on residents. That motion passed, with just councillors Ryan Mennie, Claire Moglove, and Mary Storry opposed. “The minister may or may not do this but this is the total extent of what the Strathcona Regional District can do,” said Gerald Whalley, director for Area A, which encompasses the Gordon Road and Duncan Bay Road area where complaints have been generated by local residents. “I have no jurisdiction with this because the pole peeler plant is in Campbell River.” Ida Chong, the minister of community, sport and culture, would not comment because she has yet to receive the

regional district’s letter, but said last month that she was not calling in a mediator. She said at the time she would have no grounds as only one party – the residents – is willing, and the city has not indicated it wants a mediator. “We would be overstepping the authority that municipal governments have,” Chong said. “At the end of the day, Campbell River has the authority to approve a business and where they’re located. The City of Campbell River has followed due process and followed the OCP (Official Community Plan) – it’s pretty hard for the ministry to step in.” Chong also questioned whether it would be worth the resources to bring in a mediator if what the residents want, re-location of the plant, is not feasible. And that appears not likely to happen anytime soon. The city has already ordered the plant owner, Northern Pressure Treated Wood Ltd., to implement noise reduction measures, which it has, and is ensuring logging trucks going to and from the plant

are aware of the city’s hauling restrictions. Ross Blackwell, the city’s land use manager, said the city has no legal authority to tell the pole peeler it has to move. “The pole peeler plant has every right to be there,” he said. “It’s a legitimate business, operating in a legitimate location. Once the sound has been attenuated and there’s no conflict with the noise bylaw, the city has no legal latitude to do anything further.” Peter Wipper, city clerk, cleared the pole peeler two weeks ago of being in violation of the city’s nuisance bylaw. Mayor Walter Jakeway said background noise, such as birds, traffic, and wind, is now louder in the residential neighbourhood than the pole peeler. “I would say the owner has gone above and beyond,” he said. “I think it’s been effective. And there’s not very much dust.” Still, Whalley said he sympathizes with residents who live near the plant and complain of ongoing noise from logs being dropped, traffic hazards from logging trucks going around the sharp cor-
ners on Duncan Bay Road, and dust from the plant. “It’s an annoyance in a residential area,” Whalley said on Monday. “Putting a heavy industrial use area adjacent to a residential area is not compatible. Perhaps they are able to resolve the sound issue with the pole peeling plant, but that doesn’t mean that next week maybe a jet engine factory wouldn’t start up there. It’s just not a good situation.” Residents, particularly those living in the Blue Spruce Home Park, next door to the pole peeler plant, have vo c a l l y e x p r e s s e d their disdain towards the pole peeler since it began operating in January. Residents have staged several protests outside of city hall, the pole peeler facility, and the Strathcona Regional District offices. Tracey Deller, coowner of the home park, has maintained the city did not collect all the infor mation required when it issued a development permit to the pole peeler, and it should never have been approved. “The permit – that’s still our big concern,” Deller said.
The regional district has been trying to work out an agreement with the city since 2006 to connect 172 homes in the Ocean Grove and Crawford Loop neighbourhoods to the city’s sewer system. In a 2006 referendum, residents said yes to borrowing $9,350 each. Properties benefiting from the sewer service would cover those costs in either one lump sum or spread out over a 25-year period. The regional district also received $3.4 million in provincial and federal grant funding for the project, estimated at $5.1 million. Leigh said she was presented with a draft agreement from the city on Oct. 11, 2011, with a $22,000 proposal – more than double what was approved at the referendum. “Frankly, I know that the city is struggling financially, but they cannot expect the regional district to provide far more for this project than what was approved,” Leigh
said. “Campbell River has not demonstrated any willingness to negotiate since sending out a proposed draft agreement...our staff tried to re-negotiate...but it would appear that no acceptable agreement could be reached.” The city was the first to drop the bombshell when it issued a press release Tuesday morning announcing it had pulled out of the project. For Area D residents, the lack of progress is frustrating. “At this time, one can only suspect that perhaps this project may have been fatigued into non-existence,” Mark Treacy wrote in an e-mail. But Leigh said the regional district’s engineer re-evaluated the sewer project a couple of months ago and has up-to-date plans and costs which regional district staff plan to present to the public of Northern Area D sometime in the fall.

Drive Smart BC Pre and Post Trip 2X14 Inspections Do you drive a truck with a GVW over 5,000 kg, a bus, any vehicle required to have a Motor Carrier or Passenger Transportation licence or a business vehicle with a GVW over 5,000 kg? If so, you or a person designated by the carrier must insure that the vehicle is mechanically fit TYEE to drive. Unless youCHEV are making a multiday trip, these inspections must be carried out at the start and the end of each day that the vehicle is being used. At minimum, the inspection must include the brakes, steering, lights and reflectors, tires, horn, windshield wipers, mirrors, coupling devices, wheels and rims, emergency equipment and load security devices. A written report of the inspection result is not mandatory unless the vehicle meets criteria listed in Division 25 or 37 of the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations. These vehicles are generally heavy transports or those that carry passengers. When not required by law, company policy or personal preference may still dictate that a written report is prepared. Owners and drivers of light or noncommercial vehicles and their trailers would be wise to carry out the same inspections on their vehicles regularly as well. It may be a symptom of the heavier summer traffic, but I am seeing more disabled vehicles at the roadside lately. Perhaps an inspection may have prevented them. Carihi students help build new training centre North Island College is busy building a new plumbing training centre at its Comox Valley campus — and the project gives a chance for carpentry students to learn, too. According to NIC’s director of college and community relations Susan Auchterlonie, the building will be completed to the lockup stage by students taking carpentry through the ACE-IT program for students at Carihi Secondary in Campbell River. “It’s really neat because it’s like a real job site for them — they’re actually completing a real project,” said Auchterlonie, adding carpentry students at NIC usually build a project, but then have to deconstruct it afterwards. “This time they actually get to see the results of their labour, and it’s going to be used for other students, so it’s a really neat process.” The students have been coming to NIC’s Comox Valley campus four half-days per week to work on the building for a number of weeks. This phase of construction is expected to wrap up mid- to late-August, with the students putting in a total of eight weeks of work to finish their program. The building must be complete by Sep-

tember because it will be used by students in the college’s plumbing program which also provides hands-on experience for students. The two-storey building, complete with a roof and windows, is a bit different than very basic plumbing training buildings. “We’re building the plumbing training structure to a higher standard as a result of our neighbours concerns with noise emanating from our operations,” said Auchterlonie. “We wanted to ensure that we did as much as possible to ensure that we contain the noise, any noise, coming from the plumbing programs.” The programs will likely be busy because Auchterlonie pointed out that NIC decided to consolidate its plumbing programs and only offer them at the Comox Valley campus starting in September. She said space pressures at the Campbell River campus are the reason. There, NIC is expanding its electronics and industrial automation programs, and offering some
new programming — employment skills and metal jewelry. According to Auchterlonie, NIC’s trades enrolment numbers are starting to pick up. “We’re really happy with our numbers in trades right now. For September and for the fall, most of our programs are full,” she said. “The last couple of years has been a bit of a softer enrolment but we’re see-

Our View
Better keep that septic tank clean It’s a fantasy to believe that rural residents can afford a sewage system without the city’s help. Tueday’s announcement that the City of Campbell River was We say: Area D withdrawing its support to extend the sewage system into Area D, needs the city’s will send the project onto the back support for burner for years. However, that’s not the message sewage treatment coming from Brenda Leigh, the long-time elected director representing Area D on the Strathcona Regional District. In response to the city’s withdrawal, Leigh said she isn’t surprised by
the decision and added the region will carry on with its own plans for a sewage system to serve a good portion of Area D residents who live just south of Ocean Grove. She wasn’t specific and that’s probably for the best. There’s no way a couple thousand people can afford to build their own sewage treatment facility, install all the infrastructure and then pay to remove their backyard septic systems. Perhaps if this was rich West Vancouver it would be doable, but not in rural Vancouver Island. A sewage system is sorely needed for Area D and the most cost-effective way to do this is to tie into the city’s system which can easily accommodate the
extra waste. The fact is, if there’s ever sewer lines installed in Area D, they’ll be built with provincial and federal tax dollars, and it’s hard to imagine those two upper levels of government shelling out any more for a new sewage treatment facility. However, the reality is all three levels cannot currently afford to spend millions for a relatively small area. So that means more waiting and more saving for the day when government finances hopefully improve. In the meantime, Area D residents, keep those septic systems in good working order.

We need more tourists As a newcomer in Canada, I bought a business a year ago, tourism based, and what I notice is that Campbell River counsel (with exception of Ron Kerr and Walter Jakeway) doesn’t even care about tourism in town. They just don’t care that tourists turn around and turn back to the mainland and Nanaimo. I had the opportunity to promote Campbell River in Europe with a promotional video, for all travel agents in Europe. I asked city counsel for $7,000 which would have made a big difference in promoting our city. No, I was told, I needed to get involved with Rivercorp. Well, Rivercorp has not been doing much at all, and nothing at all to promote Campbell River overseas! They don’t know what “we Europeans” like and how to promote tourism the European way; city counsel is ignorant about making more revenue for everybody – they just don’t care. So I ended up with the film crew here and gave them a good time. They shot two different promo films, one for national TV and one for the travel agency’s in Europe. The difference is these were only made for my business and not for Campbell River. I’m visiting and promoting my business in Europe at one of the most important trade shows in January 2013; I will only promote my business. Maybe we can do some thing about this? Thanks and with kind regards, Jos Krynen

Paul Rudan No, really
It’s summer, I need a break. A-ha! What’s this I spy, but one of the best letters to the editor that I’ve read in years. The letter appeared in the Aug. 1 edition of our sister paper, the Comox Valley Record, and was written by Lang Price of Courtenay. Not only did I enjoy Lang’s prose and ideas, but I also thought it was a good read for Campbell River’s freshwater enthusiasts – many of whom have cast lines in the valley’s lakes and rivers. Here it is, enjoy…and thanks Lang for giving me a summer break. Perhaps I should go fishing: Okay, here we go again, it’s the old us against them, the big corporate
dude screwing the little guy, rights verses privilege, blah, blah, blah. When will we get it that this adversarial crap doesn’t cut it any more. It’s all so 1960s power to the people. Give me a break. I’m speaking obviously, about the privilege of accessing our vast recreational wonderlands through privately owned forests, more specifically Wolf Lake. For years we’ve been lulled into the mindset that these lands are ours to do with what we so choose — wrong! This is private property. The Record has published two perspectives on this dilemma, one from a parent who seems upset that TimberWest has gated the road to the lake,
prohibiting their right to recreate on the lakeshore, and then we have a counter opinion from a gentleman who is involved in forestry. Having fished throughout the Comox Valley and points beyond, I’ve had the opportunity to engage forestry dudes on the topic of gated and decommissioned access roads. The response is the same — vandalism, garbage and the threat of fire. A number of years back, Maple Lake became a local dropoff point for all sorts of garbage, and the owner of the surrounding property slammed shut the gate. There was a bit of stink due to the popularity of Maple Lake and – behold – mature minds met to mend the mess. Volunteers gathered
to collect and truck the crap to the dump. Problem solved, gate swings open, life is good. About a month ago my fishing buddy and I drove up to north end of Wolf Lake to seek out the mighty trout. I just about puked. The surrounding area resembled a war zone — smashed bottles, piles of discarded tents and sleeping bags, rotting food, spent shotgun shells, and God knows what else. Now the word is out that the south end of the lake is similarly screwed and the gate is locked tighter than a rainbow’s jaw on a wet fly. So here’s the deal: In and around Continued on Page 9

Get old campers off good campsites I am a very concerned citizen in Campbell River and I was reading your July 18 paper. I would like to ask you a question about one of the articles in that paper, “Citizens on Garbage Patrol.”
I would like to know why no one can get the owner of a piece of junk that they have left in the woods to remove it within one month, let alone three years? I know of a few other campers that have been
left in the woods just to rot away or even keep the site for as long as that person wishes. All this does is stop anyone else from using that site. I think there are a lot of good campers
who would love to use those sites. I think that the campers should be removed by us and the bill sent to the owner asap, or added to their next year’s taxes. If not then add the bill to their auto insur-
ance. This might stop a few of the people. There has to be a way to stop these people. If you know who owns the junk there should be no problem making them remove it. Brian Rogers
More concerns over Smart Meters
Did you know that if you do not want a smart meter installed, you
have to put a notice on your meter with a signature from the owner.
In our strata we pasted notices on the door of each meter room, how-
ever, the meters were installed anyway. Maureen Rundle

No Really: Take care or get locked out the Comox Valley there are numerous groups involved in the preservation of nature and the great outdoors. Let’s see, we have fish and game clubs, river enhancement people, naturalist groups, fly fishing dudes, hiking clubs, off-road ATV guys and I’m sure many more. Within this collective brain mass there must
be some sort of solution? All of these people and the rest of us who just want to sit by the lakeshore and fish or camp are in jeopardy of losing this outdoor experience and that of our kids if we just sit back and let the actions of a few dictate how we can or cannot mingle with nature. I have a few ideas. For instance, adopt a lake preservation
program similar to Adopt a Highway. Have a weekend cleanup based on the annual Denman and Hornby Island beach tidy up (maybe the landfill guys would waive the dumping fees) or some sort of Neighborhood Watch. Let the timber companies know we respect their land. On the other hand, TimberWest could issue keys or codes for a fee if they
so choose to keep their access roads under lock and key, like what is happening to travel up Comox Lake. I know to some this is all pie-in-the-sky, group hugs and kumbaya stuff, but I feel that our outdoor privileges are being eroded by a small number of individuals who, if left unchecked, will have not only the lakes and rivers closed, but beaches, hiking trails and mountain
peaks, leaving the rest of us to commune with nature by languishing in our lawn chairs in the Driftwood Mall parking lot, which by then will be inundated with parking meters. One final thought, I hope TimberWest reads this and gives us their viewpoint and hopefully a middle ground resolution. Lang Price, Courtenay

Enjoy a safe summer, says local paramedic to call 911. Water and pools – Children are particularly vulnerable to accidents in pools. They can drown in less than five centimetres of water, so never leave a child unattended near water. Always empty wading pools after supervised use. People really enjoy being in the water in the Campbell River area – especially around Elk Lake
– so remember that it’s important to be vigilant about fast moving water. Children, adults and pets can be swept away in rivers or the ocean. Bikes, Skateboards and Rollerblades – Helmets can significantly reduce the risk of brain injury for all ages when worn appropriately. Children should wear a helmet at all times, even if they’re

just riding a tricycle; a fall from as little as two feet can result in significant trauma to a child’s brain. Cars – Never leave a child or pet in your car – even with the windows partly rolled down as the interior temperature can reach 50 degrees Celsius in as little as 10 minutes. Sun Sense – Guard against heatstroke by moving to the shade, take a break once in a while so that you don’t overdo sun exposure and drink lots of water to avoid dehydration. Headache, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, clammy/pale skin and weak or rapid pulse are all common signs of heat exhaustion. Campfires and barbecues – Never leave a fire or barbecue unat-
tended or use a camp stove in a confined space; always keep children a safe distance from the heat. Remember that even a fire that has been recently put out can generate enough heat to cause a serious burn in a child. Pull over for paramedics and other emergency responders – If an ambulance is travelling with lights and siren on, you can be sure that paramedics are responding to a lifethreatening situation or are taking a patient to receive urgent care. BC Ambulance Service crews respond to more than 486,000 events every year throughout the province, nearly one call every minute 24 hours a day, seven days a
week. In Campbell River alone, we respond to more than 4,300 events e a c h ye a r. W h e n minutes can affect a patient’s outcome, paramedics use lights and siren so that they can reach their destination as quickly as possible. So enjoy a wonderful summer with family and friends. Make sure you have lots of great memories and photos to share for years to come. Make time for safety in the summertime sun but don’t forget the sunscreen. I know that I’m going to enjoy all that British Columbia has to offer this summer. City faces $3.6 million deficit KRISTEN DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The city is forecasting a $3.6 million budget shortfall for 2012, according to preliminary fig-
ures. That’s up substantially from the last estimated budget deficit of $550,000 back in December. The picture looks bleaker now because of a change in the prop-
erty assessment value of the defunct Catalyst mill site. The BC Assessment Authority announced early last month that Catalyst no longer meets the requirements of a major industrial property, and
has been reclassified as business/ other, which means a significant reduction in Catalyst’s property taxes. That decision results in a loss of $1.8 million in tax revenue for

2012. Included in the deficit is a $1.1 million tax shortfall carried over from 2011, plus a $1.3 million increase in costs related to contract commitments and inflationary increases, said Laura Ciarniello, the city’s general manager of corporate services. If the city were to maintain the current level of services it provides to citizens, the tax rate would have to increase by 24 per cent in order to make up the $3.6 million. The loss of $1.8 million from Catalyst alone, equates to a 12 per cent residential tax increase. To put that into perspective, Ciarniello said a one per cent residential tax increase would bring in $150,000 in revenue for the city. That one per cent increase would mean roughly $12 more per year in property taxes for the average homeowner. The city’s operating budget is approximately $37 million which Continued on A3

What happens when a family member gets a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or other related dementias? Many issues – emotional and physical – quickly surface, says Jane Hope, the central Island support and education coordinator for the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. The society will help Campbell River families grappling with those many issues, at a free workshop on Wednesday, Aug. 22. Running from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at Ironwood Place (1351 Ironwood St.), the workshop will provide an introduction to Alzheimer’s and related dementias, and cover creative approaches to supporting a

Campbell River Living Marketing mountain biking in Campbell River G o C a m p b e l l R ive r. com is kicking off an extensive campaign to put Campbell River’s mountain bike trails on the map. According to the organization, the city encompasses arguably some of the best mountain biking terrain in the province, but a focused marketing strategy to promote this growing industry to the world is lacking. Tourism BC says the mountain biking tourism sector generates $635 million a year for the Province and represents an enormous overall value for an industry sector that has minimal environmental impact. The town of Whistler has enjoyed so much success in promoting its mountain biking that over the course of the past 10 years the industry has grown and is now valued as a $16 million a year business and employs 194 people year round. It is the goal of www. GoCampbellRiver.com to jump start the promotions of mountain biking within the guidelines of the Mountain Biking Tourism Association, take advantage of the pool of expertise and resources this marketing embodies,
work with local industry stakeholders to enhance Campbell River’s profile and promote the product to its fullest potential, therefore building a sustainable environment for our existing tourism related businesses and set the stage for further growth of the industry. GoCampbellRiver’s first step is to join the Mountain Biking Tourism Association (MBTA) of B.C. and to participate in its marketing initiatives by hosting a series of pages on its website. This website is the main call to action for all the marketing initiatives the MBTA is currently engaged in. The MBTA is an arm’s length organization whose primary funding is supplied by Industry stakeholders and Tourism BC and whose principal goal is to grow the mountain biking industry in the province. The Mountain Biking BC website allows active and committed riding communities across the province to consolidate their information, share it with mountain bike enthusiasts and build awareness of British Columbia as the most diverse mountain biking desti-

participate. It has been established that Campbell River has three trail networks that qualify under the MBTA’s criteria for a mountain biking destination. Those are the Snowden Demonstration Forest, the Pumphouse Trails, and the Beaver Lodge Lands. Trails that don’t meet the criteria are Menzies Mountain, Stories Creek, McIvor Lake, and Wood Creek. This does not mean that these trail systems cannot be promoted, they just cannot be promoted by the MBTA’s initiatives, unless in the future they meet the requirements. You are Invited

Littlejohn will highlight the state of the mountain biking industry and the province’s goals. He will explain what participation in the ini-

Littlejohn will be at Spirit Square this Tuesday from 9 - 10:30 a.m. Littlejohn is the cofounder of the Western Canada Mountain Bike Tourism Association, with 20 years experience in recreation and tourism in planning, marketing, and product development. Discovery Pier is turning 25 this year while it’s been 10 years strong for the Pier Street Farmers Market. The city is celebrating both anniversaries on Aug. 12, at the Market, and that means free cake!
Happy anniversaries! Two special anniversaries will be celebrated downtown on Aug. 12. This summer marks 10 years of operation for the Pier Street Farmers Market, and 25 years of fishing and ice cream on the Discovery Pier. “The whole community’s invited to join the party for the topclass farmers market and the award-winning
pier,” says Judy Ridgway, a programmer with the City’s Recreation and Culture department. “Be part of the fun as we fish, cut and serve cake, and give away prizes!” The City of Campbell River provided Canada with its first accessible fishing pier 25 years ago. Former recreation director Arnie Linder was responsible for
operating and maintaining the pier, and he’s looking forward to being part of the anniversary celebration. “I’ve got some great memories of those early days, some great laughs, and I’ ll be happy to tell stories at the event,” Linder says, recalling how some of the pier benches went missing overnight in the first season and became fish habitat.
To celebrate these two milestones, the city will host an anniversary party on Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pier and Farmers Market. Highlights include a kids fishing derby from 9 a.m. to noon, cake cutting at noon, free prizes draw at 2 p.m., and free commemorative shopping bags for the first 100 people to enter the draw.

Summer dance camps sure to enchant the kids Experience the wideeyed wonderment of the enchanted forest and dance with makebelieve fairies, princesses and princes and heroes this summer. In the Creative Movement and Dance camp, three- and four-yearold children will feel like the smallest creature or the tallest trees, move swiftly like the animals or bend and sway with the wind.
And, who knows, they may even meet some mythical creatures too. The camp takes place at the Community Centre Aug. 20-24, from 1:15-2:15 p.m. The cost is $35. B a l l e t c a m p fo r children ages 5-8 will highlight basic classical ballet positions and moves that will be incorporated into a story of adventures as
dancers travel through the enchanted forest meeting the inhabitants of this beautiful and mysterious world. Ballet camp is scheduled from Aug. 20-24, from 2:30-4 p.m. at the Community Centre. The cost is $50. Magi Schoffield-Reid leads both enchanting camps. For more information call 250-286-1161 or 250-923-7911. Young ballerinas learn about those “leading lines” as they extend their arms while remembering to keep those toes pointed! The city is hosting two upcoming summer camps for young dancers. The Creative Camp is for three- and four-yearolds, while Ballet Camp is aimed at five- to eight-year-olds.

Take the Misty Isles hop
Explore Desolation Sound aboard the schooner-rigged Misty Isles on Aug. 10 and Aug. 22, with the Cortes Island Museum. Much of Desolation Sound is in a marine park and is abundant in wildlife. Dolphins, porpoises, seals and a variety of birds are often sighted in this pristine part of the coast. The area is also famous for its spectacular fjords and mountains which rise up out of the sea. As well as natural beauty, it is also the focal point of some of the area’s most fascinating maritime history as the anchorage for British and Spanish explorers who first charted this area in the late 1700s. Skipper/naturalist Mike Moore will provide background highlights on the Age of Exploration and the rich marine features of the area, from birds and mammals to the dramatic topography. Desolation Sound tops the list as a destination for boaters from

DEATHS
DEATHS
EINARSON, Kenneth Blake (Ken) Aug. 4, 1943 - July 14, 2012 It is with great sadness to announce the death of our loving father, Ken. Ken passed away suddenly in his Victoria home where he resided for much of his later life. Ken is predeceased by his father and mother, Lew and Emm Einarson and is survived by his 2 daughters, Deborah and Cheryl Einarson and 5 grandchildren: Kristiana (Mathew Gagnon), James (Janet) and Clayton McQuarrie, Brianna McCargar and Chantelle Nugent; as well as 3 great grandchildren: Jesse and Maddison Gagnon and Jack McQuarrie. Ken is also survived by his 2 brothers: identical twin Cliff, Ralph and sister Valerie (Don Daigle) and by his beloved nieces and nephews. Ken was born in Campbell River and spent his early years in Oyster Bay until his mother and father acquired an acreage on the corner of Hilchey and PenďŹ eld Rd in Willow Point where they built a house and had a small farm across from Willow Point Park on Meadowbrooke Rd. As a teenager, Ken and his brothers Cliff and Ralph worked very hard to help their parents clear underbrush to make way for their small farm, which they also worked hard to maintain. As well as working physically hard, Ken was also a skilled hunter and a gifted artist. For two consecutive years, between the ages of 15 and 16 Ken won scholarships to attend the summer school of arts and crafts at the University of British Columbia. As a young adult, Ken worked in the logging industry and the Elk Falls Mill where he was the local president of the P.P.W.C. Ken was extremely intelligent and in his later years he developed a great passion for writing and spent many hours a day at his typewriter. Ken was a kind-spirited man and a very quiet and private person. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A private service will be held in memory of Ken at a later date. You can send condolences to www.earthsoption.com

Spawning gravel will restore chinook habitat The Campbell River Salmon Foundation will be placing spawning gravel in the upper Campbell River Aug. 7-10. To place the gravel, a ramp will be built into the river from the trail near the outhouse on the Canyon View trail – just upstream of the Catalyst mill pumphouse (left side of the
river when you are looking downstream). Spawning gravel will be placed using an excavator in the mainstem of the Campbell River, from just opposite the top end of Second Island to about 70 metres upstream. Due to safety concerns, access to the river upstream of the project will be restricted for
three to four days while equipment is placing gravel. The Canyon View Trail will remain open; however users will be re-routed or may be delayed as trucks cross the trail to deliver gravel to the river. Gravel will be delivered using the logging road bridge and the road into the Catalyst Pumphouse so the pub-
lic is asked to exercise caution in these areas as well. The trail along Elk Falls #3 channel will be closed August 7-10. This project is being led by the Campbell River Salmon Foundation (CRSF) with funds provided by CRSF and the Bridge Coastal Fish and Wildlife Restoration Program (FWCP),
a BC Hydro initiative to address issues on watersheds with BC Hydro facilities. The project will restore some of the areas historically used by the Campbell River chinook salmon and will provide an additional 1,000 - 1,500 m2 of spawning habitat, sufficient to support 100-150 pairs of returning adults. Much of the
lower river is lacking the gravel qualities and quantities that s p aw n i n g C h i n o o k prefer. Three hydroelectric dams and reservoirs constructed over 50 years ago and the flows over the years have resulted in gravel washed downstream and out of prime spawning areas. With no new gravel able to
move from the upper watershed of the Campbell River to the salmon spawning area, a plan to replenish the spawning habitat through periodic additions has been implemented. Any questions regarding this project should go to Mike Gage, chair, Campbell River Salmon Foundation at (250) 2874368.

Don’t worry, be happy and safe this long weekend Over the B.C. Day long weekend, on average, five people are killed and 533 injured in 1,935 crashes across the province. Whether you’re staying in town this holiday weekend or heading out on a road trip, ICBC is encouraging everyone to plan ahead and drive safely. “The unfortunate reality is that we see a spike in crashes over the B.C. Day long weekend so please drive responsibly and be courteous so that everyone gets to their destination and home again safely,” said Kevin Falcon, Minister of Finance and Deputy
Premier. “If you’re going to get behind the wheel this weekend, you owe it to yourself and those you love to take your time, focus on the road and absolutely avoid driving while impaired,” said Shirley Bond, Minister of Justice and Attorney General. “We’re tough on dangerous driving behaviours because their consequences remain devastating for too many B.C. families.” “The safety of our roads is a shared but very personal responsibility – we need to work together this long weekend to pre-

Association of Chiefs of Police (BCACP). “Police will be out in full force across the province this weekend to make sure drivers stay focused on the road.” If you’re setting off on a road trip, keep in mind that long drives and hot summer days can be a dangerous combination and increase your risk of driver fatigue. Check your engine oil, washer fluid, lights and inspect your vehicle tires, including the spare, to make sure they are in good condition and properly inflated. Planning for Life Changes BLAZING THE TRAIL TO YOUR RETIREMENT 2X14 2X14 DREAMS Baby boomers are redefining retirement Even when baby boomers reach the golden age of 65, they may not necessarily pack up their desk and enjoy a quiet retirement lifestyle like their parents did.
Scott Cessford
Different retirement lifestyles Characteristically, baby boomers have enjoyed higher standards of living than their parents. In addition, healthier lifestyles and medical advances are leading to longer life expectancies.
PLANNING PLANNING FOR LIFE LIFE FOR
Times have changed – and so has the retirement age Unlike their parents, baby boomers may not necessarily be working towards the goal of retirement. Retiring later may mean you may be able to wait longer before transitioning to strategies that protect your nest egg. To longevity and good health Living longer ultimately means very little without your health. With longer life expectancies and medical advances that allow people to recover from serious illnesses, you also need to think about building health-care costs into your retirement savings plan. Charitable giving Many have special causes that they are passionate about. If charitable giving through time or funds is in your retirement plans, you and your advisor can evaluate how you can balance both your retirement lifestyle and charitable giving at the same time. Creating a new family tradition Through efficient tax and estate plan strategies, boomers are able to fulfill their own retirement objectives while making sure they can still leave a legacy to care for their families. You’ve seen it before While you’ve been saving for your retirement, you’ve experienced the ups and downs of the markets and seen generous and all-time low interest rates. After you stop working, the markets and interest rates will continue to change. This article is supplied by W. Scott Cessford, Vice President and Investment Advisor with RBC Dominion Securities Inc. – Member CIPF. Scott also volunteer’s this time and expertise educating and informing the public through the non-profit group, “Planning for Life Changes”. “Planning for life changes” is a not-forprofit group made of local professionals who will be providing free seminars that will cover various aspects of life including retirement planning, income taxes, Wills and Power of Attorney, real estate matters, and funeral planning.

NHL comes to River City

Players and prospects from the National Hockey League were in Campbell River last Friday night to take on the Campbell River Storm. The game, which raised money for local charities, kicked off last weekend’s Storm rookie camp for young players vying for a spot on the team’s roster for the upcoming season. Comets win gold and break records along the way “The kids from Campbell River can really throw,” could be heard from the Javelin measuring judge at the Junior Development Provincial Track and Field Championships (9-13-years-old) this past weekend in Richmond. Hayley Hunter, 13, continued her dominance on the javelin pitch and set a B.C. record in the process. Hunter’s gold medal throw of 38.32 metres shattered the 2003 record of 37.73 m. She also placed sixth in Discus.
Greg Hay dominated the 13-year-old boy’s field winning the gold medal and ousting his nearest competition by over eight metres. With a personal best throw of 36.60 m, Hay moved into ninth spot overall on the BC All Time distance record for javelin. Hay also placed sixth in the 100 m, sixth in Long Jump and seventh in the 200 m. Dale Trenholm, Campbell River Comets head coach, was very happy with the results.
“Greg and Hayley have qualities I look for in athletes and more. Their dedication paid off for them both,” he said. “With the throwing and conditioning, they have been working consistently five days a week leading up to the B.C.’s. “With Greg’s first full year throwing, he has excelled past my expectations with attitude and work ethic. With Hayley coming to my extra throw practices, she started to come out of her shell, have
