Thoroughbred racing at Hastings Park won’t be relocated to Fraser Downs – for now

Woman pleads guilty to dog thefts in Surrey, Coquitlam

Horse track merger idea shelved

Five more people still face charges in string of alleged dognapping cases

by Jeff Nagel

by Kevin Diakiw

THE CITY OF VANCOUVER has agreed to a two-year extension of

Great Canadian Gaming’s Hastings Racecourse, putting to rest for now talk that the Lower Mainland’s two horse racing tracks – Cloverdale’s Fraser Downs and Hastings Park – might merge at a single site. Vancouver council’s delay in signing a deal to keep racing at Hastings Park and its goal of tripling green space in the park had fueled speculation thoroughbred horse racing there might soon be relocated to Fraser Downs, which hosts standardbred harness racing. “This extension allows our company to work closely with the City of Vancouver regarding long-term operations at Hastings Racecourse without being concerned with a lease deadline looming,” Great Canadian spokesman Howard Blank said. Hastings’ lease was to expire in November and the deal now provides certainty until November 2014. Rich Coleman, the provincial minister responsible for gaming, Rich Coleman said in an earlier interview he expects both tracks will continue separate operations. And he said a new five-year strategic plan for the horse racing industry set for release soon will likely call for significant changes but continued operation of both tracks. “I think the recommendation at the end of the day may be to see if they can sustain themselves at their individual tracks,” Coleman said. Running both racing styles at one dual-circuit track isn’t impossible, but Coleman said it will be off the table as long as separate tracks have secure homes and are viable.

Dog Rescue has pleaded guilty to two counts of theft involving dogs that have gone missing in the Lower Mainland. Louise Mary Alice Reid entered the pleas last Thursday (July 26) in Surrey Provincial Court, according to court documents. She admitted to two offences that occurred last year, one in Surrey on March 1 and the other in Coquitlam on Nov. 21. Reid was one of six people charged in a rash of dog thefts throughout Metro Vancouver. Last November, charges were Samson the announced bulldog was against Janet taken from a Olson, founder of Coquitlam yard A Better Life Dog last November. Rescue, as well as Michaela Schnittker, Reid, Christine Carter, Diane Young Hale and Natalia Borojevic. Olson faces 36 charges ranging from theft and fraud to break-and-enter in connection with alleged offences dating back to 2006. The allegations have not been proven in court. Reid’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 7.

‘When things go wrong, you work it out’

Police seek more witnesses to June shooting

Cloverdale couple celebrates diamond anniversary

Man shot multiple times at Newton house party

by Evan Seal AFTER 65 YEARS of marriage, Roberta Smith, 86, and her 89-year-

old husband Jack like to think they have a few answers as to what makes people compatible. Married at St. Saviour’s church in Vancouver on Aug. 2 1947, they both believe they have lived through the perfect time. Sitting at the kitchen table in their bright east Cloverdale home, the two reminisce about life’s challenges and what has kept them together. Camping with their three children was always a highlight of the summer. “We both grew up in Vancouver during the depression so we quickly learned the value of a dollar,” said Roberta. “People nowadays want everything when they get married, we didn’t have anything – no fridge or oven, just an icebox and a Coleman stove.” They were raised in the same neighbourhood – another reason Roberta Smith they believe they have lasted so long. They didn’t know it at the time but their families attended the same church and they even went to the same high school, Vancouver Technical, although three years apart. “You should marry someone from the same social background, with similar political views,” Roberta says. “We can agree on a lot of things. You need to have similarities.” One of their differences, however, is that she collects things, while he likes to throw things out. Jack admits their lengthy marriage hasn’t always been easy, but says “when things go wrong, you work it out. I’ve slept on the couch a few times but you don’t get up and walk away, you make up and carry on. And she laughs at my jokes, some she’s heard 30 times and that helps.” Although they never had alcohol in the house when their children were young, Jack now enjoys a glass or two of wine in the evenings, “strictly for health reasons,” he says with a laugh. But most of all, they still enjoy each others company and still hold hands, and says Roberta. “He’s always happy, that’s what I love about him.”

by Kevin Diakiw POLICE ARE appealing

for public assistance in identifying the person responsible for a shooting last month. On June 10, at about 4:30 a.m., Surrey RCMP received a complaint of shots fired in Newton. When they arrived, police found a 33-yearold man lying in the front yard of a home, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital and treated for serious injuries. Police have learned the victim was with a group of friends at a house party in the 9100-block of 147 Street, where upwards of 50 people were gathered.

“We agree on a lot of things.”

Jack and Roberta Smith were married 65 years ago today, on Aug. 2, 1947.

Surrey renting street lights to cellphone companies City lamp standards will become mini wireless towers during year-long project by Kevin Diakiw PEOPLE WITH WEAK cellphone signals in

New wireless transmission equipment is being installed on top of street lights in Surrey for a oneyear pilot program.

Surrey may soon find themselves sidling up beside city lamp standards to get a better connection. The City of Surrey is beginning a pilot project with the five cell providers (Rogers, Telus, Bell, Mobilicity and Wind) to us street lights for mini cellphone towers. Surrey council endorsed a city staff plan to begin a year-long pilot project renting street lights to cell companies that want to install wireless transmission equipment. The first out of the gate is Mobilicity, which will be installing equipment on a light standard at 84 Avenue and 152 Street in the coming weeks. The rental cost to the company will be $8,000 a year, along with a one-time application fee of $1,200.

“The carriers would consider the use of up to 170 street light poles at various locations throughout the city over the next three years, which would provide a strong and sustainable revenue stream,” a corporate report to council states. In fact, if all those 170 street poles were rented, Surrey would receive $1.36 million annually, equivalent to more than a one per cent tax increase. Shaun Grefford, Surrey’s general manager of investment and intergovernmental relations, said the city has been looking at developing a new wireless protocol for some time. The pilot project, he said, presents some promising opportunities. “The technology has changed, you can have smaller sites,” Grefford said. “The benefit of that is there’s less of a signal boost that has to go out.” kdiakiw@surreyleader.com

At some point the man became involved in an altercation with a group of people on the front lawn of the residence before being shot. While police have interviewed several people at the party, investigators still need to speak with more that were present the night of the shooting. The victim is not known to police and there is no indication that he had prior issues with anyone attending the party. Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP’s Serious Crime Section at 604-5990502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if they wish to remain anonymous.

Mayoral candidate eyes Liberal riding Vikram Bajwa hopes to take Dave Hayer’s Surrey-Tynehead seat

by Kevin Diakiw

A FORMER SURREY MAYORAL candidate wants to run for provin-

cial politics. Vikram Bajwa announced Monday he’s eyeing the SurreyTynehead Liberals seat being vacated by Dave Hayer. Bajwa last ran for Surrey mayor in 2011, spending more than $70,000 and securing 4,481 votes (six per cent of those who cast ballots). He was soundly beaten by Mayor Dianne Watts, who took 55,826 votes, or 80 per cent of the ballots cast. Bajwa has been in the news of late, calling for Watts’ resignation because of a $45,000 policing bill at the Surrey Regional Economic Summit attended by former U.S. presidents George

Bush and Bill Clinton. Watts had previously said the event would come at no cost to the taxpayers. She stands by that, saying any policing costs were within the RCMP budget for traffic control. Bajwa said the Liberal haven’t yet asked him to seek the nomination but he is requesting they consider his candidacy. He’s been told to gather his 100 nomination signatures and submit them to the nomination committee for consideration. He planned to submit his nomination papers earlier this week. “I think it’s appropriate now because of the Enbridge (pipeline) issue, Bajwa said, adding he’s “proud of how Premier Christy Clark is dealing with it. The provincial election will be held in May 14, 2013.

Summer is here; the weather is warm; and the trees on your street and in your yard need water. Like us, trees need long refreshing drinks of water to stay healthy. Here’s what you can do to help your neighbourhood street trees and the trees in your yard this summer: 1. Water the trees twice a week. 2. Water thoroughly at the base of the trees for 15 minutes. 3. Water during the cooler parts of the day (early morning and dusk) and when it isn’t raining. 4. Water slowly so that the water has time to soak into the dry soil and reach the roots, instead of pooling on the surface. Reap oil If a tree falls on Bose Farm, who hears it? benefits THE HEADLINE STATING that the Bose Farm

B.C. HAS BEEN trying to get a piece

of the lucrative oil industry for decades. Well, that opportunity has landed in our laps with the Enbridge pipeline and the desire to open up new overseas markets for Alberta’s oil. With the right environmental safeguards in place, there is no reason why we should not be looking for ways to get our fair share of the lucrative oil industry pie. Premier Christy Clark is absolutely right to be taking the tough stand she has on this issue. In fact, it would be offensively irresponsible of us if we did not leverage the oil industry to offset government revenue from income tax and eliminate provincial debt the way Alberta has done. Oil royalties made this a reality for the people of Alberta. Now it’s our turn to reap some of the benefits. If done right, oil pipelines have a 99 per cent safety record. We should therefore not waste this opportunity when it potentially offers the potential of a zero sales tax rate for B.C. citizens in the near future. Clark has my full support in seeking a better deal for B.C. and I’m certain the support of many other British Columbians as well.

application was rejected may be overly optimistic. It was referred back to staff. Council directed staff to “review the site grading plan relative to the Remple Property (adjacent site); retain as many trees as possible; review the road network plan and traffic interchange to increase connectivity; and conduct community consultation with residents and stakeholder groups.” This does not mean that the forest will be saved. As many trees as possible is a vague request that was interpreted as zero trees in

the previous application that passed first and second readings on July 9. That original vote requires some clarification. Councilor Martin, in fact, voted in favour of the application. The Community Charter clearly states that the Mayor or Acting Mayor is a member of council and that all members are obligated to vote on every resolution or bylaw. Neither the mayor nor council members can abstain from voting unless they declare a conflict of interest and excuse themselves from the meeting. Unless a member indicates a contrary vote,

their silence is registered as a vote in favour. Substantial changes to the Bose Farm application will be needed to address the resolution of council. The community consultation should include neighbours, environmental groups and be referred to the city’s Environmental Advisory Committee. A new and improved plan should trigger another public hearing. In the meantime, neighbours should keep a close watch over those 332 trees. If a tree falls in Bose Forest, can council hear it? ex-Mountie Monty Robinson. The sentence, if you can call it that, is a gross miscarriage of justice. The defendant’s native status should have carried no weight. He was not in any poor circumstance like addiction, lack of education, unemployment or being in jail many times, which would have deserved special consideration. But Mr. Robinson was like most other members of the society, having earned a responsible job and even a promotion. The judge has made an egregious error in judgment. We are told the concept of fairness applies in making decisions. There is no fairness in this ruling. The decision must be appealed.

A letter writer argues for an appeal of the sentence handed to former RCMP officer Monty Robinson (above).

ALBERTA’S PREMIER needs to

consider the following hypothetical headlines and then give her head a shake: “Grain spill cleanup begins in B.C.” and “Oil spill cleanup begins in B.C.” The environmental and the cost implications of these two headlines don’t even begin to compare. The same can be said for almost any other products shipped through B.C. from Alberta and vice versa. When was the last time anyone heard of a softwood lumber spill in Alberta that resulted in catastrophic environmental devastation and a multibillion dollar cleanup? Monika Bonney, Burnaby

JUDGING FROM the recent B.C. Auditor-

General’s report on the fiscal mess in Victoria, all our high-paid MLAs have one thing in common: they have no respect for taxpayers’ money. When the Auditor-General takes them by the scruff of their necks and holds them up to public scrutiny, they instantly become meekly apologetic. But they have the gall to act as if their disregard for accurate accounting is all news to them, as if the Auditor-General has never drawn it to their attention before. Careless inattention to detail might be expected from that tired old crew

of the almost leaderless BC Liberal party because their ship is floundering. Most of them are focused on updating their resumés and searching for a plush lifeboat. However, there is no excuse for Adrian ‘I-Am-Holier-Than-They-Are’ Dix. If Dix doesn’t have the ethical standards and organizational ability to insure his NDP MLAs document their travel expenses correctly, how can he be expected to manage a competent and principled government?

pipelines,” Leader letters, July 26 Although B.C. Premier Christy Clark tries to appear neutral and open-minded in regards to the Northern Gateway oilsands project’s potentially detrimental environmental consequences, it’s fairly clear that she’s hoping for any piece of

scraps thrown B.C.’s way by Alberta Premier Alison Redford. This could lead to justification for Clark to allow the potential-megaeco-disaster, twin-pipeline project to make its way through countless pristine and eco-sensitive regions of B.C., not to mention through to our northern coast and its waters that are at risk by giant oil-

tankers. But hopefully Redford’s foolish, tight-fistedness will give only more reason for B.C.ers and perhaps even our government – not to mention fuel for the eco-warriors’ fight against the project – to just say, to hell with the whole thing.

BC Summer Games would not have been possible without the assistance of many people and organizations. I want to say a huge thank you firstly to the B.C. Games Society, Mayor Dianne Watts and her council, city staff and School District #36 for their invaluable assistance. Also, to the corporate and funding Bill McNamara partners and friends of the games for their generous contributions. Secondly, to my co-chair, Linda Hepner, my board of directors and their committee chairs, thank you for the time and energy you put in over the past 18 months to ensure these games were successful. Over 3,000 volunteers signed up to give their time and energy to help make these games a success. Your enthusiasm and pride of community ensured that the athletes, coaches and officials had a memorable time in our city. We could not have done it without you. Thank you all for being part of the team.

Toddler falls two floors by Kevin Diakiw

A TODDLER is fortunate to have escaped injury after falling from a third-storey window on the weekend. Police say the two-year-old girl was playing in a room on the third floor of an apartment complex in the 12100-block of 75A Avenue at about 2 p.m. on Saturday. Her mother went to check something on the stove, and the toddler climbed on some furniture to the window and leaned against the screen panel, which gave way. The girl tumbled out, landing in a bush, and was taken to hospital where it was determined she hadn’t broken any bones or suffered any other serious injury. Police are reminding the public to be extra vigilant with the warm weather,

reminding residents that screen windows are not designed to withhold any weight.

Pair struck by car while waiting for bus A man is nursing a broken arm and jaw and a woman is suffering from minor injuries after being struck by a car police believe may have been driven by a woman who was drinking. The pair of 23-yearolds from Surrey were found lying on the grass near a bus stop at 88 Avenue and 146 Street last Friday just before 6 p.m. A car struck a lamp standard, then hit the couple and a bench at the bus stop. The driver, a 46-year-old from Surrey, parked a couple of blocks away and fled on foot.

However, a woman who had witnessed the accident followed her while in contact with 911. The driver was given a breathalyzer at the scene and may face charges of impaired driving. The two people who were hit by the car were treated at hospital and released.

North Surrey blaze considered suspicious Investigators believe someone broke into a North Surrey business and set it on fire July 24. Fire crews arrived to the two-alarm blaze in the 12100 block of 86 Avenue to AAA Surplus Liquidation and found an explosion had taken place. When fire was out, it became apparent some-

one had broken into the business before it was set on fire. Surrey Mounties are asking anyone who may have seen anyone or anything suspicious in the area to call the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Delta meth lab shut down A federal drug team descended on a home in North Delta on July 20, shutting down a clandestine drug lab. Members of the RCMP’s Federal Synthetic Drug Team moved in on a residence near 118 Street and 73A Avenue. Two men and one woman were arrested as they were leaving the home. Record check trend draws privacy warnings Some info searches tap PRIME police database by Jeff Nagel B.C. PRIVACY Com-

missioner Elizabeth Denham is warning both the provincial government and private sector employers are making too much use of criminal record checks. She issued an investigation report recommending the province limit its use of checks, which are used to vet prospective employees and re-screen some existing staff. “I’m concerned about the societal trend towards increased employment-related records checks without clear evidence as to their benefit in safeguarding the workplace,” Denham said. Record checks are important tools in hiring staff who will work with vulnerable adults or children or wield great spending or dataaccess powers, she said. But in some cases, she said, government conducts ongoing or multiple criminal record checks on the same employee, adding that shouldn’t happen without a justifiable reason. Denham also wants the province to report publicly on its use of record checks. B.C. Civil Liberties Association executive director David Eby said the problem is not just criminal record checks but broader police information checks that also pull in data

recorded in the PRIMEBC police database. Most of the B.C. population is in PRIME – often as witnesses, 911 callers or other contacts in a police investigation – and some are recorded as having had “adverse contact” with police. That designation can spell rejection for a job applicant or prospective tenant who agrees to a request for a police information search, Eby said. “It’s completely at the discretion of the police and it’s incredibly overused,” Eby said of the “adverse contact” designation in the database. The box can be checked for someone who was insistent on their rights in dealing with police, he said, or even in cases where someone attempts suicide and their family or friends call police. “This database was never meant to be used to prevent people from getting apartments or job opportunities,” Eby said. “But it’s become a database for employers, landlords and schools. It’s got this creeping functionality to it that needs to be reined in.” The over-reliance on checks is also unfortunate in cases where people who do have a criminal past are now trying to change their path, he added. She recommended B.C. public agencies not use police information.

Questions you should ask about travel insurance. The summer sees more people travelling over the border, making the most of the warm weather and school vacation. It’s also the time many discover they’re under-insured when they incur steep unexpected medical expenses in a foreign country. These can, however, be easily avoided by asking a few pertinent questions before you go. Do I need travel insurance for a quick trip across the border? Accidents are just as likely to happen on a day trip as any other day at home or at work. Driving on unknown routes could potentially increase the odds. As always, it’s best to ensure you’re fully covered. Does BC Medical Services Plan cover everything? Provincial health care is unlikely to cover all of your medical expenses incurred out of province, or overseas. In fact, the Canadian government recommends that travellers purchase travel insurance when leaving the country because of the extremely high cost of medical care outside of Canada. My credit card automatically covers that, right? You may not have adequate coverage through your credit card plan. Check to ensure you have medical coverage, not

just travel accident insurance as there is a difference, and that the medical coverage meets your needs. Is my work travel insurance plan adequate for this trip? Many plans offered through employers lack certain options, like trip cancellation or interruption insurance. You can purchase these on their own to complement your company’s travel insurance. Also, some employee plans only cover the employee, so if you are travelling with your family, ask your insurance specialist about a family travel insurance plan, for both medical or trip cancellation/ interruption insurance. Do your research and ask the right questions. Visit a BCAA location and speak with an insurance specialist who will be happy to advise you, or visit bcaa.com/travelinsurance before you go and make the most of your trip.

Docs approve new deal Faction opposed to latest division of medical cash by Jeff Nagel B.C. DOCTORS have voted to

ratify a new four-year master agreement with the province. The B.C. Medical Association said the deal provides $100 million to continue and expand medical programs until 2014 as well as a “modest” lift in doctors’ fees to cover their overhead costs. The fee increase is 0.5 per cent in each of the next two years and would be renegotiated for the final two years of the agreement. It also expands various incentives for family practice doctors to develop care plans for complex care, chronic disease and mental

health patients and to increase access to family doctors. But the 92 per cent vote in favour is being contested by a faction of physicians who don’t like how the pot of medical funding is being divided. Those opposed say the outcome is illegitimate because most members didn’t vote and a further 3,000 to 4,000 non-BCMA members couldn’t vote. Dr. Zafar Essak said the agreement will expand the health care bureaucracy and muzzle doctors, who will be barred from speaking up for patients without approval of government. Also unhapppy is the B.C.

Anesthesiologists’ Society, which campaigned for higher pay for its members and went to the brink of a service withdrawal this spring to try to win the right to bargain separately from the BCMA. BCAS executive director Dr. Roland Orfaly said wait lists have grown longer despite greatly increased funding funnelled through the BCMA – now more than $3.6 billion a year. “It’s been a colossal failure at the taxpayers’ expense and simply pouring more money into a dysfunctional BCMA process is not going to make the problem go away,” he said.

De Jong said B.C.’s Medical Services Commission has indicated it will seek a court injunction to enforce compliance if the Cambie Surgery Centre and Specialist Referral Clinic don’t cease and desist extra billing within 30 days. The audit concluded extra billing happened in more than 200 cases totaling nearly $500,000. The commission independently enforces the Medicare Protection Act, which ensures B.C. clinics operate in line with the Canada Health Act and that medical care is delivered based on need and not a patient’s ability to pay. “That is the law in British Columbia and we expect every operator to operate within the law,” De Jong told reporters Wednesday. “The findings today from the medical services commission suggests that in these two instances that has not been occurring.” Former health minister Kevin Falcon ordered the audit in 2010 after a complaint that the principles of Medicare were being violated. Dr. Brian Day, medical director of the two clinics, contends the law is unconstitutional and intends to fight any attempted injunction in court. He has long argued that for-profit clinics should be able to take payments from people who are willing to pay more to avoid long waits for care in the under-funded public system, freeing up resources there.

Caught

between cultures

Raminder Sidhu’s debut novel provides an intimate look into the lives of several women wrestling to balance tradition and Western values

by Sheila Reynolds

S

he was at temple one day when she heard it. Raminder Sidhu was sitting nearby as a group of women were chatting. She couldn’t hear everything clearly, but the tone the ladies were using was definitely sullen. It sounded like they were talking about a couple who had lost a child, and how it was especially tragic because they didn’t have any other children. Then, Sidhu realized she was wrong. She had misinterpreted the conversation. The women weren’t lamenting a death, but mourning the birth of a third daughter. She was stunned. “Seriously, this is still happening?” she thought. Having grown up in a South Asian community, straddling the North American culture she was raised in the midst of in Vancouver, she’d seen and heard a lot of things she had questioned over the years. But this was the last straw. “Somebody has got to do something about this,” Sidhu thought. “Nobody’s going to change anything if no one’s going to recognize this is a problem.” She began scribbling her thoughts in a notebook and with no plan and no outline, a short story emerged. And eventually, from that short story grew her debut novel, Tears of Mendhi. Published earlier this year, the book, which explores the intertwined lives of several female characters living in Vancouver’s Little India neighbourhood, is written in first-person narrative through a series of diary entries. “The South Asian community is based on rumour and gossip and hearsay – no one ever knows the facts. I wanted to use a format that actually shows the way

the community functions.” The format allows her to explore myriad social issues – domestic abuse, gender discrimination, racism – from a variety of points of view, from a young girl anticipating her arranged marriage, to an older woman torn between the shame of divorce versus living with an unfaithful husband. The different perspectives, Sidhu says, are important. “It seems like everyone talks about the people in our community but nobody talks with them, to help them.” And the author doesn’t shy away from her opinion that though they’re often the victims, females are also a big part of the problem. “I wanted to show that women are perpetuating gender discrimination. All the violence and domestic abuse just progressed naturally. When you’re raised your whole life to be inferior to men, it’s natural progression that these tragedies are going to occur.” She has learned, however, that the issues raised in her book are not unique to the South Asian community. “It’s so cross-cultural. I’m getting so much feedback where readers are saying ‘where you say good Indian girl, I want to cross it out and put good Chinese girl, or good Italian girl’.” Sidhu, who has lived in Surrey since 1991, is a middle-school teacher in Coquitlam and did not have big dreams

“I have been well versed in the worth of a woman. There are three significant stages in my life; the rest are minor details. I am born into a family I must serve unconditionally. I am obliged to marry a man I must worship unconditionally. I will give birth to sons I promise to love unconditionally. Threads of shame and sacrifice weave my body together.” - Tears of Mehndi

of being a novelist. “I never in a million years imagined myself as a writer or ever wanted to be a writer,” she laughs. Still, the story flowed easily, she says, although the subject matter wasn’t always pleasant to deal with. “I was so compelled. You know how they say ‘the book chose me’? That was it,” she says. “I’ll admit it was disturbing at times. I would be overwhelmed.” Since the book was published, she’s heard of many more incidents of violence and heartbreak. “I know I wrote a fiction novel, but this is real for so many women,” Sidhu says, adding she initially naively thought she was writing about a minority and that attitudes toward women in her community had improved much more since the ‘60s and ‘70s than they have. For now, Sidhu’s happy her book is getting the word out and encouraging dialogue. She hopes that one day the “great” side of South Asian culture can shine through, but says it’s nearly impossible until the pervading social problems are dealt with. “I’m just the voice. I’m hoping readers will be the action.” Tears of Mehndi is available online and at all major bookstores.

the historic heart of Surrey, so it’s only fitting that the 9th annual Cloverdale Blueberry Festival is getting in touch with its roots. Presented by the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association and the Cloverdale District Chamber of Commerce and partners, the festival continues to grow and evolve, getting bigger and better every year. There’s a definite heritage theme being added to the mix in 2012, with activities such as an historic walking tour of downtown Cloverdale, actors in period costume portraying some of Surrey’s most colorful pioneer characters, an antique tractor pull, antique car zone and more. “You can see history permeating the whole event,” says festival coorganizer Paul Orazietti. The festival is also a chance for local service organizations to shine, serving up a plethora of pancake breakfasts and lunchtime barbecues at various points in the town centre. As always, paying homage to the great and mighty blueberry is front and centre, inspiring pies, pancake and fruit sales – and a parent’s greatest blackmail photo op: the blueberry pie-eating contest, where competitive eaters of all ages will chow (face) down. They’re located in the Family Zone at Clover Square Village, also host-

ing the talent showcase, BMX stunt shows, face painting, mini-golf and more. Clover Square Village also hosts the Race Car Zone, new this year. It features quarter-mile drag racers on display, including a top field nitro-burning funny car capable of traveling a quarter mile in less than four seconds. Candy-coloured classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars and motorcycles will line Cloverdale’s 176 and 176A Streets in the historic town centre for the Surrey Show ’n Shine (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Surrey Museum Plaza hosts the Surrey Art Council’s Blueberry Arts Festival, a visual and performing arts showcase, plus a juried art competition, draft sales and more. The Surrey Museum presents three, must-see events, the Fire Truck open house, Pic Knit, and blueberry festival activities, including a kids play area, craft table and historic actors reenacting Surrey history and events. At the northern-most end of the festival, there’s the Dinotown Live attraction at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, Orazietti said. The Versatiles, a golden-aged performing arts troupe, are putting on a show at noon Saturday at Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino, which is hosting the two-day Antique Tractor Pull (1-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday). Girard earns a bronze Weightlifter medals at Summer Olympic Games

by Nick Greenizan

FOUR YEARS ago at the Summer Olympics in Beijing, weightlifter Christine Girard missed the podium by three kilograms. And Tuesday in London, it looked like the 27-year-old – who moved to White Rock from Quebec four years ago – might again suffer the same oh-so-close fate. Girard, who moved to B.C. when her husband, an RCMP officer, was transferred here, sat in fourth place after the snatch portion of the women’s 63-kg. competition, but vaulted onto the podium after she lifted 133 kg. in her second attempt in the clean-and-jerk. She lifted 103 kg. in the snatch, for a total score of 236 kg. Her lift knocked Turkey’s Sibel Simsek, who lifted 130 kg. in the clean-andjerk, off the podium and into fourth spot, with a 235-kg total. “It is very hard to describe how I feel,” Girard told CTV after the competition. “Four years ago in Beijing I came fourth and since then I have spent the past four years training through injuries and various changes in my life to get to this moment… Getting this bronze medal makes sense of the last four years.” The gold medal was won by Kazakhstan’s Maiya Maneza, who lifted a total of 245 kg. and set an Olympic record in the cleanand-jerk. Silver went to Russia’s Svetlana Tsarukaeva, who was the gold-medal favourite prior to the competition. She lifted a total of 237 kg. Girard, who trains in Surrey with the Semi Weightlifting Club, was one of Canada’s top medal hopes heading into the Summer Games, which began Friday. The bronze medal is Canada’s fourth of the Olympics, and the country’s first-ever women’s weightlifting medal. And while it was a historic win for Canadian weightlifting, it is bound to have an effect on those she trains with locally, too. “It’s a very big breakthrough for Canadian lifting, but we’re just elated here, too,” Semi Weightlifting founder Dieter Stamm said

Christine Girard displays her bronze medal while on the podium Tuesday in London. Tuesday. “She’s such a role model here for the younger lifters. They really look up to her. I just had one (young club member) call me to say, ‘Did you see that?’ He was so excited, he knew all the information, knew what happened.

“We’re very proud of her. We’ve already got a big card we’re going to sign and give to her.” Stamm admits he had a few nervous moments watching Girard’s performance on television – especially after network coverage cut away from the competition briefly to focus on

other events. “After the snatch, when she was in fourth, I thought, ‘Oh no, not again,’ and then the TV station switched away to gymnastics, so I was in the dark, waiting for updates. Then I saw she’d won bronze and just thought, ‘Finally!’” Though the medal is Girard’s first at the Olympics, her weightlifting resumé includes PanAmerican Games gold and silver medals, as well as gold and bronze medals in the Commonwealth Games. She holds clean-and-jerk records at both Games. Also in London Tuesday morning, Canada’s women’s soccer team – which includes Surrey resident Maeve Glass on its management staff – came from behind to tie Sweden – No. 4 in FIFA world rankings – 2-2, thus earning a spot in Olympic quarter-finals. Canada, FIFA’s seventh-ranked nation, finished third in Group F with a 1-1-1 record. The tournament’s knockout stage begins tomorrow (Friday).

OBITUARIES

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved and cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, Robert James Preston, on July 26, 2012. Born in Winnipeg, MB on October 2, 1943. Bob is survived by his wife Pat, daughters Laura (Todd) and Sheryl, grandson Tyler (DeDe), twin brother John, and sisters Joan & Gladys. Loved and admired by many, Bob passed away peacefully with Pat & his two daughters at his side after a valiant six-year struggle with liposarcoma. Bob had a passion for numerous hobbies; namely playing guitar, singing, golfing, car restoration, camping, & vacationing in Indio, California. After his own experience with long hospital stays, Bob was inspired to entertain & share his music with others. His unique & heartfelt “Man in Black” tribute to Johnny Cash was Bob’s way of brightening other people’s lives & giving back to others during his illness. His zest for life, sense of humor and kind soul stayed with him right through to his last hours by extending his love to the people closest to him, talking, laughing, crying, singing and remembering. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Rona Cheifetz and the team at the BC Cancer Agency, as well as the Palliative Care team at VGH, especially Dr. Jyothi and RN, Annaliese. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Friday, August 3 at Valley View Memorial Gardens: 14660 72 Avenue, Surrey; viewing at 9 am & service at 10am. In lieu of flowers, donations to: sarcomahelp.org/donations are appreciated. “…and I’ll be waiting on the far side banks of Jordan…”
