THANK YOU FROM BC HYDRO BC Hydro would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding while crews worked hard to safely restore power as quickly as possible following the wind storm that hit the Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie and surrounding areas on July 20th. The storm affected approximately 20,000 BC Hydro customers. The severity of the storm caused considerable damage to power lines, hydro poles and other BC Hydro infrastructure. The extent of the damage was widespread and crews continue to repair damaged infrastructure and equipment. Public and worker safety is our number one priority. BC Hydro would like to remind the public to keep at least 10 metres (33 feet) away from any power line or any object in contact with a power line. To report a downed power line or an object in contact with a power line, please call 1 888 POWERON (1 888 769 3766). BC Hydro staff and crew appreciated your patience during the storm and clean up afterwards, including all of the positive feedback we received during this event. On behalf of our team, thank you to all our customers!

ity – having a capable individual like S. Sgt. Blake MacLeod assume the position of Of¿cer-In-Charge of the Cranbrook-Kimberley RCMP detachment provides me with a level of con¿dence that the policing interests of both Kimberley and Cranbrook will be well taken care of,” said Kimberley Mayor Ron McRae. “I am particularly impressed with Insp. MacLeod’s commitment to the core values of community policing as it applies to smaller communities like Kimberley.” “The City of Cranbrook is very pleased to welcome Blake MacLeod to our community,” said Wayne Stetski, Mayor of the City of Cranbrook. Insp. MacLeod, who was born and raised in Southern Ontario, joined the RCMP in 1993 at which time he completed French language training in Montreal followed by his attending RCMP training at Depot in 1994. From Depot he was transferred to Kelowna, where he was stationed from 1995 to 2002 and assigned to a variety of duties including uniform general duties and plainclothes assignment to the General Investigation Section. In 2002 he was promoted to the rank of Cpl. and transferred to Whistler BC, where he worked in a supervisory capacity until 2008. In 2008 he was promoted to the rank of Sgt. and posted to the Pemberton Detachment until 2009, at which time he was transferred to the VernonNorth Okanagan Detachment. In 2011 Insp. MacLeod was promoted to the rank of Staff Sgt. and transferred to the Kelowna Detachment. “As RCMP of¿cers, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to serve in several communities in the span of our career. My family and I believe strongly in being a member of the communities that we live in through volunteerism and participation in the community. On a professional note my focus will include continuing to foster, and build on, the trust and strong relationships currently shared with all of our community partners and citizens. I simply would like to add in a positive way to what our of¿cers, support staff and volunteers are currently doing in providing police services to Kimberley Cranbrook,” added Inspector MacLeod.

About BC’s Position on Oil Pipelines 1.
BC understands and supports the need to build trade with Asia. BC already leads Canada in developing exports of lumber and coal and led the Canadian effort to have China designate Canada as a favoured tourism destination.
2.
BC is not opposed to transporting heavy oil from western Canada to the west coast. But BC has set 5 conditions: a full federal environmental assessment; world-leading marine oil spill prevention & management;worldleading land oil spill prevention & management; legal obligations to First Nations must be met & signiďŹ cant opportunities offered; BC must receive beneďŹ ts equal to the risk from any oil pipeline across our land to our coastline.
3.
The NDP proclaimed their categorical opposition to any oil pipeline, even before the environmental assessment started and despite the jobs it would create. BC Conservatives proclaimed their categorical support, before any environmental analysis and before any negotiations with Alberta. Premier Christy Clark’s position is balanced & smart & I stand shoulder to shoulder with her.

Lilac blooms all season? Their thick, pungent scent - a bit like sweet roses with a hint of vanilla and almond is one of the messengers of spring. The distinct smell and shape of the lilac bloom graces gardens early on in the season, their colour anywhere from the traditional purple to white, pink, red and even yellow. So why are we talking lilacs now, at the height of summer? There is a revolutionary new lilac, ďŹ ttingly called Bloomerang. It blooms in the spring and then again throughout the summer. While the plant goes through a rest period in the heat of summer, Bloomerang's fragrant owers return mid-season and continue right up until frost, turning heads and noses alike. Their blooms are abundant, making this plant ideal for cut owers. The summer and fall blooms are a bit smaller than the spring owers, but still put on a spectacular show. Every branch bears owers and as long as the plant continues to grow, it continues to ower. Pruning is not necessary to get Bloomerang to re-bloom, however, a light shearing after the initial spring owering results in a fuller plant with more branches and consequently more fragrant owers. This is a mounded variety with small leaves that reaches only about four to ďŹ ve feet in height and therefore ďŹ ts easily into smaller gardens. It is ideal as a foundation planting or as part of a mixed border. Bloomerang can even be included into perennial beds. Like other varieties of lilacs, the Bloomerang is a low maintenance shrub. Lilacs are well suited for this area - they are extremely hardy and thrive on alkaline soil. Keep in mind, however, that all varieties require at least two years from planting to producing good blossoms. Lilacs love good drainage and do well on hillsides or even slightly elevated areas. They love clay based soils and get along well in dry climates. Lilacs have fairly deep roots and do need a cold period to do well. To keep lilacs healthy, try to replenish the old wood with new shoots by pruning the spent owers after blooming and thinning old canes back to ground level every two or three years. This allows more air into the plant for better circulation and increases the amount of light the plant can absorb. Lilacs are very durable, but can be susceptible to powdery mildew. To help avoid this condition good pruning is important as well as proper fertilizing. Try avoiding late day watering as well. A good rule to follow with most plants is to water as early in the day as possible, to prevent them from going into night time wet. Today, there are many different varieties of lilacs available. They come in different colours and sizes. See all the different options to ďŹ nd the lilac that is right for you – every yard needs at least one. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Tara

Nurses launch new local breastfeeding campaign Breastfeeding is natural and best for babies, moms and the environment. However, successful breastfeeding requires more than the commitment of mom and baby. Breastfeeding requires the support and encouragement of family, friends and community to ensure success.
Public Health Nurses and various community partners are imagining and building one because although most families in Cranbrook choose to breastfeed many do not continue for as long as recommended for various reasons including a lack of public acceptance.
Public Health Nurses will be reaching out to local businesses and community in the next few weeks. The nurses will be encouraging businesses to take part in this initiative by placing a sticker in their window (or other visible area) to show that they are a breastfeeding friendly location. Then, during Breastfeeding Week we hope to publish a newspaper article that lists places in the community
that display the breastfeeding logo. Businesses will be asked to show their support and promote awareness among customers and staff that breastfeeding needs to be natural or ‘anytime, anywhere’ to meet the needs and rights of mothers and children across Canada. For more information contact public health nurses at the Cranbrook Health Unit at 250-4202207.

JUDGES CORNER
CONTESTANT CORNER THE FINAL THREE CUPCAKES WITH
Final Three – The plan was to eliminate one contestant from the competition in the last round, with only two in the ďŹ nal round. However, the competition was ďŹ erce! And after two hours at the judges table, it came up as a three way tie. The Judges Table is happy to announce that each Casey, Danika and Tanya are each making it into the Final Round. Congratulations to all three of you!
Danielle is the owner of Crumbs Cakery and Creator of Cupcake Wars. Danielle loves cupcakes! But when it comes to Cupcake Wars, Danielle won’t be taking it easy on the contestants. Danielle will be judging contestants on their technical skills and overall execution.
Sandy Smith is a realtor for Royal Lepage East Kootenay and author of Kootenay Country Kitchens Cookbook. Sandy is so sweet, always looking for the good in each cupcake. And a nice balance of sweet is exactly what she’ll be looking for in avor and texture.
Mike & Joey are the owners of The Choice Shop. They have been selling cupcakes since grade 5, and are determined to balance the judges table with their masculinity. They will be looking for overall awesomeness in each cupcake
Becky & Robyn are the owners of MJs Floral & Gifts. Don’t mistake these sweet pretty faces for weakness. When it comes to judging appearance, it’s going to take a lot more than owers to impress these ladies.
August’s Cupcake Challenge is presented by The Paw Shop: The Furry Friend Cupcake
It’s the dog days of summer! And to help celebrate, this round will encompass Cranbrook’s favorite furry friends. Contestants must incorporate two ingredients from our challenge ingredient list, and present an appearance that represents the furry friends of Cranbrook. The ingredients must not only be in the cupcakes, they must be a prominent ovor in the cupcake. Ingredients: Beef, Chicken, Rice, Beef Jerkey, Peanut Butter, Carrots, Celery, Corn.
Prizes Contestants are baking their way to over $1000 in prizes, donated by Crumbs Cakery, Sandy Smith, MJs Floral & Gifts, The Choice Shop, Pro-Fitness Gym, Dream Events, The Paw Shop, St. Eugene Golf Resort & Casino, and Northstar GM.

Danika Peltzer’s White Chocolate and Strawberry cupcakes gave the judges a perfect balance of the traditional fruit and chocolate combination. The simplicity of the cupcake made it achievable for any wedding. Danielle said “I absolutely loved the texture of the cake. You could not have chosen a more traditional, wedding style cake for this cupcake.â€? Sandy said “It was a moist cake with a uffy frosting, which I really enjoyed. The white chocolate, almonds, and strawberries were a great combination.â€? Becky & Robyn said “The piping on the icing made it look quite elegant. Though we felt the strawberry accent to be a little simple.â€? Mike & Joey said “Great cake texture. A nice blend of salty and sweet. And a steady hand on the frosting. It was very good.â€? Casey Jenson’s Lemon Almond cupcake was at the peak of wedding presentable cupcakes. Her fresh edible owers would be a welcome addition to any summer wedding. Her creativity in combining avors put her cupcakes over the top.â€? Danielle said “There was a beautiful balance between each of the avors (coconut, white chocolate, cream cheese and lemon), that left me wanting more!â€? Sandy said “The hollow strawberry ďŹ lled with champagne was a creative idea that I just loved!â€? Becky & Robyn said “Of course we love the edible fresh ower. The overall presentation was perfect.â€? Mike & Joey said “Again...Anything with booze wins us over! But really, it was very original.â€? Tanya Le Clair made it through to the ďŹ nal round of Cranbrook Cupcake Wars with her Blushing Bubbly Strawberry Champagne cupcakes. her Zabaglione frosting was a hit with the judges. The cupcakes were not only simple and elegant in presentation but very pleasing to the palate. Danielle said “I love the simplicity. The blend of the frosting, and the shortcake like texture, made for a wonderful cupcake experience.â€? Sandy said “This cupcake had a light sweetness and tangy strawberry ďŹ lling, making it the perfect avor combination.â€? Becky & Robyn said “You could really taste both the champagne and the strawberries. The apperance was clean and simpleâ€? Mike & Joey said “It was delicious! We wish we had more. We also wish we had a jar of the ďŹ lling for our toast!â€?
