The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) will be writing a letter to the Federal Electoral Boundary Commission to voice its opposition to the proposed realignment of the electoral boundaries which would affect communities in the region. Under the proposed realignment, the District of 100 Mile House and portions of the South Cariboo would become

part of the Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon Riding with the closest constituency office based in Chilliwack. “The proposed changes to include portions of the South Cariboo, including 108 Mile Ranch, and Lac la Hache and the District of 100 Mile House as part of the Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon, shows a lack of foresight and appreciation of the

Bergen wins Olympic silver medal Ken Alexander Free Press

Former 100 Mile House resident Gabe Bergen will be bringing home a silver medal from the 2012 London Olympic Summer Games. Bergen and his Men’s eight rowing team battled for second place in the finals at Eaton Dorney, but were unable to defend the gold they won at the Beijing Olympics. The powerful German crew, which hasn’t been defeated since 2009, led from start to finish and crossed the line in 5:48.75. Canada finished slightly more than a second (5:49.98) behind the Germans. They finished second in the repechage in 5:27.41, just behind Great Britain (5:26.85). Be sure to read further details and reactions in the Aug. 8 edition of the 100 Mile House Free Press.

Regulate, don’t ban teen tanning personnel to control the equipment and minimize the risks. The only thing the government is banning is not allowing teenagers under the age of 18 to tan in a salon, unless they have a medical exemption, Gilroy says, adding the association disagrees with it completely. Meanwhile anyone can purchase a tanning bed for home use, he notes, and they do not have to take any formal training to operate the equipment. “Teens will find a way to tan even if they are banned from tanning salons.” Gilroy adds the

parent’s rights should not be taken away. Parents should be educated of the risks involved with tanning naturally, in salons, and with home units. Reports generalize tanning, Gilroy says, adding the risks are way lower for professional tanning salons. He explains tanning salons use an exposure schedule designed by Health Canada to provide information and a starting level that is based on skin type. Furthermore, Gilroy

notes exposure time is gradually increased to minimize the risk of sunburn. There are six skin types, and the lower the number the higher the risk of sunburn. Tanning booths ban skin type 1 people due to their higher risks associated with tanning Gilroy says, because this skin type always burns and never tan. Indoor tanning provides a responsible and controlled alternative to sunlight, he adds.

The proposed legislation under the Public Health Act will ban the use of commercial indoor tanning beds by youth under the age of 18. “Educate, don’t ban teens use of tanning beds in salons,” says Steven Gilroy, Joint Canadian Tanning Association executive director. Moderation and the education level of the person operating the equipment is what needs to be addressed, Gilroy adds, not the banning of the service to teenagers. Victim recovered in drowning The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the body of a 12year-old girl has been recovered from Skaha Lake near Penticton. The girl has been identified as Ida Lynn Marie Holt-Scherer, a resident of 70 Mile House. Ida and her family were on vacation in the Penticton area when the fatal mishap occurred. On July 29, she and another girl were standing on a sandbar, which forms naturally where a channel meets the main part of Skaha Lake. The sandbar gave way, sweeping the two girls into the main part of the lake. The second girl was rescued by a passerby and was not physically injured. A search began

immediately for Ida, but it was not until the morning of July 31 that searchers were able to locate her and recover her body. She was found

about 200 metres from shore in water about nine metres deep, about 60 metres from where she had last been seen. The BC Coroners Service is continu-

ing to investigate this death. On behalf of family members, the BC Coroners Service requests that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.

Royal LePage 100 Mile Realty is holding its third annual garage sale in its parking lot in conjunction with the regular South Cariboo Farmers’ Market. The sale will take place Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, says realtor and key organizer Ron Kelly. He adds the funds raised will stay in 100 Mile House and will go to the 100 Mile House & District Women’s Centre Society to assist with the shelter

program. The Royal LePage national fundraising event is held in May, but due to the cooler climate locally, Kelly says they decided to hold their sale in August. Realtors contribute a lot of the sale items, but they can always use more donations. Gently used unbroken garage sale items are welcomed and may be dropped off at the Royal LePage office located next to Tim Hortons. For more information, call Royal LePage at 250-395-3424.

WEEK OF AUGUST 5 TO 11, 2012

JENNI TANNER

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: LEO, VIRGO, AND LIBRA.

Jenni says: “I love the music mix and I can listen to CaribooRadio.Com as it grows.”

ARIES

You’ll enjoy a shopping trip this week. Look for bargains and you will discover lots of little treasures that will make you very happy. TAURUS

Jenni won free lunch at “BJ’s Donuts and Eatery” in 100 Mile House B.C. CONGRATULATIONS!

After a stressful and very active period you will be ready for some relaxation. Spare some time to spoil yourself by going to a spa or treating yourself to some other gentle activity. GEMINI

You’ll be surrounded by lots of people this week. You might want to finish off your vacation by organizing a party for your family and friends. Summer isn’t over yet, and there is lots more fun in store for you. CANCER

You’ll be surprised to feel the pressure of the back-to-school season. Even if you don’t have school-age children, you will be responsible for an activity that brings these feelings forward for you. LEO

As you prepare to participate in some social activities, other obligations could dampen your enthusiasm. Responsibilities will have to take priority, though. VIRGO

Whether you’re on vacation or not, you would like to plan a mini-holiday. At the very least, you could spend the weekend driving around and discovering new places.

Bill Baerg wins the Tombstone tourney By Spence Henderson On July 25, 26 of 59 golfers stayed alive past 18 holes in the annual TIM-BR Mart Tombstone tourney at the 108 Resort Golf Course. Unfortunately for eight of them, they didn’t get beyond one shot, so didn’t finish in the prizes. Bill Baerg led the way taking two shots

on the 20th hole. Jim French and Erv Hannah got their drives off on hole 20. French had two deuces in his round as did James Clancy and Al Sidor, but the biggest deuce in many ways (over 65 feet and the first third-flight deuce in six weeks) went to Shawn Reid. Jim Laird, Bob Wieduwilt and John

Tomlinson all reached the 20th tee, while Spence Henderson, Met Boyson, James Seeley, Roger Hood, Al Smeds and John Kuharski all reached the 19th green. We won’t mention the name of the logging brother who planted his marker on the 17th green to earn the dubious honour of first out. There were double

long drives, closest to the pin (KPs) and long putts because the Tombstone is an 18-hole plus tourney plus 16 draw prizes. Jim Zailo won his match with Steve Randall and Eric Ohlund took his match against Bill Stokes. Stokes and Randall win dinners as quarterfinalists, while Zailo and Ohlund proceed

Five clubs in the bag great at the 108 Ken Alexander Free Press

On July 24, 35 golfers played a game of five clubs only low net during 108 Resort Ladies night. Ready, set, go, whoa … only five clubs allowed,” says club vice-captain Gloria Corno. “I do believe there was a random bag check — keeping the girls honest. It was all done in good fun.”

First flight Janet Roux, Joanne Garrow and Shelly Larson all tied for first place. Lorraine McCaffrey was the par pot and Roux took the birdie pot. Second flight Shirley Boyson was first, Maureen Pinkney took second place and Pauline Weigelt finished in third. Boyson and Carol Lidstone split the par pot and the birdie pot was carried over.

to the semifinals. The Psalm 23 Million Dollar Holein-One contest starts Aug. 10. The two-day club championship is on Aug. 18-19 and the Cariboo Open is on the long weekend in September.

Golf Tournament

Third flight Bonnie McColl, Carol Plautz and Wendy Foster were first second and third respectively. Plautz won the birdie pot and the par pot was carried over. Corno says she heard it on the grape vine that it has been proven by Wendy Foster that it’s possible to hit a golf ball and have it come up and hit your chin. “Shucks, a two-stroke penalty - now that hurts!”
